The 2014 Mw 8.1 Iquique earthquake ruptured the boundary between the subducting Nazca Plate and the overriding South American Plate in the North Chilean subduction zone. The broken segment of the South American subduction zone had likely accumulated elastic strain since an M~9 earthquake in 1877 and what therefore considered a mature seismic gap. The moderate magnitude of the 2014 earthquake and its compact rupture area, which only broke the central part of the seismic gap, did not result in a significant tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. To investigate the seismo-tectonic segmentation of the North Chilean subduction zone in the region of the 2014 Iquique earthquake at the shallow seismic/aseismic transition, we combine two years of local aftershock seismicity observations from ocean bottom seismometers and long-offset seismic reflection data from the rupture area. Our study links short term deformation associated with a single seismic cycle to the permanent deformation history of an erosive convergent margin over millions of years. A high density of aftershocks following the 2014 Iquique earthquake occurred in the up-dip region of the coseismic rupture, where they form a trench parallel band. The events spread from the subducting oceanic plate across the plate boundary and into the overriding continental crust. The band of aftershock seismicity separates a pervasively fractured and likely fluid-filled marine forearc farther seaward from a less deformed section of the forearc farther landward. At the transition, active subduction erosion during the postseismic and possibly coseismic phases of the 2014 Iquique earthquake leads to basal abrasion of the upper plate and associated extensional faulting of the overlying marine forearc. Landward migration of the seismogenic up-dip limit, possibly at similar rates compared to the trench and the volcanic arc, leaves behind a heavily fractured and fluid-filled outermost forearc. This most seaward part of the subduction zone might be too weak to store sufficient elastic strain to nucleate a large megathrust earthquake.

On April 2014 the Iquique Mw 8.1 earthquake ruptured the interpolate contact between the oceanic Nazca and continental South American plates offshore northern Chile between 19.5◦S to 21◦S in April 2014. This earthquake did not fully release the strain accumulated since the last great megathrust (Mw 8.8) in 1877 and had left an unbroken segment in the south. From December 2014 to November 2016, we deployed an offshore network of 15 Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) that covered the rupture area and the unbroken southern segment using the Chilean Navy ship OPV Toro and R/V Sonne. That data set is supplemented by five weeks of data from 67 OBS installed for a controlled source seismic experiment during cruise MGL1610 of the R/V Marcus Langseth in late 2016. Data acquired onshore by stations from of the IPOC (Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory Chile) and CSN (Chilean Seismological Service) networks are also included. We present first results of this ongoing project, which include double-difference hypocenter relocations based on waveform cross-correlation. Most of the seismicity occurs between 19.5 and 21◦S up-dip of the patch of maximum coseismic slip during the 2014 earthquake, while the seismicity in seismogenic depths is highly concentrated forming well-defined clusters. The observed seismicity provides constraints on the structure of the marine forearc and enables us to relate the seismicity distribution to the background seismicity, seafloor morphology, and regional tectonics.

On 1 April 2014, a Mw 8.1 earthquake ruptured a portion of the subduction zone in northern Chile offshore Iquique between 19.5◦S to 21◦S. A large earthquake had been expected in the subduction zone off northern Chile, because it had not ruptured in a megathrust earthquake since a M∼8.8 event in 1877. The 2014 earthquake did only affect the northern region of the 1877 rupture and left an unbroken segment to the South. In December 2014 we deployed an offshore network of 15 ocean-bottom-seismometers (OBS) between 19◦S and 22◦S using the Chilean Navy ship OPV Toro, covering the aftershock zone of the 2014 Iquique event and the un-ruptured offshore domain in the South. The network was recovered in November 2015 with RV SONNE.

Powerful subduction zone earthquakes rupture thousands of square kilometers along continental margins but at certain locations earthquake rupture terminates. To date detailed knowledge of the parameters that govern seismic rupture and aftershocks is still incomplete. On 16 September 2015 the Mw. 8.3 Illapel earthquake ruptured a 200 km long stretch of the Central Chilean subduction zone, triggering a tsunami and causing significant damage. Here we analyze the temporal and spatial pattern of the co-seismic rupture and aftershocks in relation to the tectonic setting in the earthquake area. Aftershocks cluster around the area of maximum coseismic slip, in particular in lateral and downdip direction. During the first 24 hours after the mainshock, aftershocks migrated in both lateral directions with velocities of approximately 2.5 and 5 km/h. At the southern rupture boundary aftershocks cluster around individual subducted seamounts that are related to the downthrusting Juan Fernández Ridge. In the northern part of the rupture area aftershocks separate into an upper cluster (above 25 km depth) and a lower cluster (below 35 km depth). This dual seismic-aseismic transition in downdip direction is also observed in the interseismic period suggesting that it may represent a persistent feature for the Central Chilean subduction zone.

On 16 September 2015 the Mw. 8.3 Illapel earthquake ruptured a 200 km long stretch of the Central Chilean subduction zone, triggering a tsunami and causing significant damage. Here we analyze the spatial pattern of coseismic rupture and the temporal and spatial pattern of local seismicity for aftershocks and foreshocks in relation to the tectonic setting in the earthquake area. Aftershock seismicity surrounds the rupture area in lateral and downdip direction. For the first 24 hours following the mainshock we observe aftershock migration to both lateral directions with velocities of approximately 2.5 and 5 km/h. At the southern earthquake boundary aftershocks cluster around individual subducted seamounts located on the prolongation of the downthrusting Juan Fernández Ridge indicating stress transfer from the main rupture area. In the northern part of the rupture area a deeper band of local seismicity is observed indicating an alternation of seismic to aseismic behavior of the plate interface in downdip direction. This aseismic region at 30 km depth that is also observed before the Illapel 2015 earthquake is likely controlled by the intersection of the continental Moho with the subducting slab. The continental shelf and slope of southern Central Chile have been subject to a number of international as well as Chilean research campaigns over the last 30 years. This work summarizes the geologic setting of the southern Central Chilean Continental shelf (33°S–43°S) using recently published geophysical, seismological, sedimentological and bio-geochemical data. Additionally, unpublished data such as reflection seismic profiles, swath bathymetry and observations on biota that allow further insights into the evolution of this continental platform are integrated. The outcome is an overview of the current knowledge about the geology of the southern Central Chilean shelf and upper slope. We observe both patches of reduced as well as high recent sedimentation on the shelf and upper slope, due to local redistribution of fluvial input, mainly governed by bottom currents and submarine canyons and highly productive upwelling zones. Shelf basins show highly variable thickness of Oligocene-Quaternary sedimentary units that are dissected by the marine continuations of upper plate faults known from land. Seismic velocity studies indicate that a paleo-accretionary complex that is sandwiched between the present, relatively small active accretionary prism and the continental crust forms the bulk of the continental margin of southern Central Chile.

Based on a compilation of published and new seismic refraction and multichannel seismic reflection data along the south central Chile margin (33°–46°S), we study the processes of sediment accretion and subduction and their implications on megathrust seismicity. In terms of the frontal accretionary prism (FAP) size, the marine south central Chile fore arc can be divided in two main segments: (1) the Maule segment (south of the Juan Fernández Ridge and north of the Mocha block) characterized by a relative large FAP (20–40 km wide) and (2) the Chiloé segment (south of the Mocha block and north of the Nazca-Antarctic-South America plates junction) characterized by a small FAP (≤10 km wide). Hydrothermal circulation and brittle faulting processes affecting the oceanic lithosphere are usually confined to the upper crust for oceanic lithosphere created at intermediate to fast spreading rates. Lower crust and mantle rocks are therefore relatively dry and undeformed. However, recent studies at subduction zones suggest that hydration of the oceanic plate is most vigorous at the trench–outer rise, where extensional bending-related faulting affects the hydrogeology of the oceanic crust and mantle. To understand the degree of hydration, we studied the seismic velocity structure of the incoming Nazca plate offshore of southern central Chile (∼43°S); here the deep-sea trench is heavily filled with up to 2 km of sediments. Seismic refraction and wide-angle data, complemented by seismic reflection imaging of sediments, are used to derive a two-dimensional velocity model using joint refraction and reflection traveltime tomography. The seismic profile runs perpendicular to the spreading ridge and trench axes. The velocity model derived from the tomography inversion consists of a ∼5.3-km-thick oceanic crust and shows P wave velocities typical for mature fast spreading crust in the seaward section of the profile, with uppermost mantle velocities as fast as ∼8.3 km/s. Approaching the Chile trench, seismic velocities are significantly reduced, however, suggesting that the structures of both the oceanic crust and uppermost mantle have been altered, possibly due to a certain degree of fracturing and hydration. The decrease of the velocities roughly starts at the outer rise, ∼120 km from the deformation front, and continues into the trench. Even though the trench is filled with sediment, basement outcrops in the outer rise frequently pierce the sedimentary blanket. Anomalously low heat flow values near outcropping basement highs indicate an efficient inflow of cold seawater into the oceanic crust. Hydration and crustal cracks activated by extensional bending-related faulting are suggested to govern the reduced velocities in the vicinity of the trench. Considering typical flow distances of 50 km, water might be redistributed over most of the trench–outer rise area. Where trapped in faults, seawater may migrate down to mantle depth, causing up to ∼9% of serpentinization in at least the uppermost ∼2 km of the mantle between the outer rise and the trench axis.

The influence of tectonic processes in evolution of magmatic suitesevaluated through their geochemical signature has always been a subject of debate.Late Paleocene arc volcanism in the Southern Central Andes, particularly in North Patagonia, can be used to infer a direct relationship between magmatic episodes and tectonic changes along the Andean margin. Eocene arc-related volcanism 11 (*44 Ma) in the North Patagonian Andes shows evidence for limited influence of 12 the subducting slab on the composition of arc magmas and they exhibit an alkaline tendency. By Oligocene times (*29 Ma), arc volcanic sequences in the Auca Pan 14 depocenter show predominantly arc-like geochemical signatures and have been 15 derived from a calc-alkaline source. After a Late Cretaceous to Paleocene stage of mountain building, the North Patagonian Andes were extensionally reactivated leading to a period of crustal attenuation. The result was the marine Traiguén Basin characterized by submarine volcanism and deep-marine sedimentation over a quasi-oceanic basement floor that spread between 27 and 22 Ma and closed by 20 Ma, age of syndeformational granitoids that cut the basin infill. As a result of basin closure, accretion of the Upper Triassic metamorphic Chonos Archipelago took place against the Chilean margin, overthrusting a stripe of high-density (mafic) rocks on the upper crust, traced by gravity data through the Chonos Archipiélago. After this, contractional deformation had a rapid propagation between 19 and 14.8 Ma rebuilding the Patagonian Andes and producing a wide broken foreland zone. This rapid advance of the deformational front, registered in synorogenic sedimentation, was accompanied at the latitudes of the North Patagonian Andes by an expansion of the arc magmatism between 19 and 14 Ma, suggesting a change in the subduction geometry at that time. Then a sudden retraction of the contractional activity took place around 13.5?11.3 Ma, accompanied by a retraction of magmatism and an extensional reactivation of the Andean zone that controlled retroarc volcanism up to 7.3?(4.6?) Ma. This particular evolution is explained by a shallow subduction regime in the northernmost Patagonian Andes, probably facilitated by the presence of the North Patagonian massif lithospheric anchor that would have blocked drag basal forces creating low-pressure conditions for slab shallowing. Contrastingly, to the south, the accretion of the Chonos Archipelago explains rapid propagation of the deformation across the retroarc zone. These processes occurred at the time of rather orthogonal to the margin convergence between Nazca and South American plates after a long period of high oblique convergence. This review synthesizes the tectonomagmatic evolution of the southern Central andNorthern Patagonian Andes between 35°30?S to 48°S with the aim to spotlight earlycontractional phases on Andean orogenic building and to analyze their potential drivingprocesses. We examine early tectonic stages of the different fold and thrust belts that composethis Andean segment. Additionally, we study the magmatic arc behavior from a regionalperspective as an indicator of potential past subduction configurations during critical tectonicstages of orogenic construction. This revision proposes the existence of a continuous large-scaleflat subduction with a similar size to the present-largest flat-slab setting on earth. This particularprocess would have initiated diachronically in late Early Cretaceous times and achieved fulldevelopment in Late Cretaceous to earliest Paleocene, constructing a series of fold - thrust beltson the retro-arc zone from 35°30?S to 48°S. Furthermore, dynamic subsidence focused at theedges of the slab flattening before re-steepening beneath the foreland zone may explain suddenpaleogeographic changes in Maastrichtian-Danian times previously linked to continental tiltingand orogenic loading during a high sea level global stage. Breakup and dispersion stages of Gondwana were ruled by crustal extension. In Patagonia, this regime was associated with the opening of extensional basins from the Jurassic onwards, a process that was interrupted by the Andean orogeny. New data generated from the hydrocarbon exploration allowed identifying Jurassic to Eocene contractional deformations, previously not registered in central Patagonia. We summarize in this chapter evidence for five compressional events intercalated with the extensional regime that affected central Patagonia from the Early Jurassic to the Paleogene. These events, denominated ?C1?, ?C2?, ?C3?, ?C4? and ?C5? acted diachronicronously producing tectonic inversion of the Jurassic-Cretaceous depocenters. The first three contractional pulses occurred during the Jurassic while the two remaining were late Lower Cretaceous and early Paleogene. The origin of this compressive activity would be linked to different processes that comprehend from thermal weakening of the crust produced by expansion of the thermal anomaly of Karoo in Mid to Late Jurassic times; the southwards continental drift since the Early Jurassic; the ridge-push generated by the opening of Wedell Sea since Mid Jurassic times; and two mid ocean ridge collisions during the Cretaceous.
