Starting from enantiomeric pure 1-[(3S,5R)- and 1-[(3R,5S)-3-(hydroxymethyl)- 2-methylisoxazolidin-5-yl]-5-methylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones (-)7a and (+)7b, obtained by lipase-catalyzed resolution, pure diethyl{[(3S,5R)-2-methyl-5-(5-methyl-2,4-dioxo-3,4- dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl)isoxazolidin-3-yl]methyl}phosphonate (-)12a and diethyl{[(3R,5S)- 2-methyl-5-(5-methyl-2,4-dioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl)isoxazolidin-3-yl]methyl} phosphonate (+)12b have been synthesized. The obtained compounds showed no cytotoxic activity versus the U937 cell line in comparison with AZT, and were poorly able to inhibit HIV infection in vitro.

Mediterranean Diet (Med Diet) is one of the healthiest dietary patterns. We aimed to verify the effects of weaning (i.e., the introduction of solid foods in infants previously fed only with milk) using adult foods typical of Med Diet on children eating habits, and on the microbiota composition. A randomized controlled clinical trial on 394 healthy infants randomized in a 1:1 ratio in a Med Diet group weaned with fresh; seasonal and tasty foods of Med Diet and control group predominantly weaned with industrial baby foods. The primary end point was the percentage of children showing a good adherence to Med Diet at 36 months. Secondary end points were mother’s changes in adherence to Med Diet and differences in children gut microbiota. At 36 months, children showing a good adherence to Med Diet were 59.3% in the Med Diet group and 34.3% in the control group (p < 0.001). An increase in adherence to the Med Diet was observed in the mothers of the Med Diet group children (p < 0.001). At 4 years of age children in the Med Diet group had a higher gut microbial diversity and a higher abundance of beneficial taxa. A Mediterranean weaning with adult food may become a strategy for early nutritional education, to develop a healthy microbiota, to prevent inflammatory chronic diseases and to ameliorate eating habits in children and their families.

The ene-type reaction between (dithio)carboxylic acids and alkenes has been studied computationally by DFT and topological (analysis of the electron localization function, ELF) methods. The reaction proceeds under kinetic control and the observed differences in regioselectivity are well-explained by the relative stability of the different transition structures. In agreement with experimental observations, electron-rich alkenes lead to Markownikoff adducts while electron-poor alkenes lead to Michael adducts. In all cases the reaction proceeds through an only transition structure (one kinetic step) although a different synchronicity was observed depending on the alkene electronics. The ELF analysis of the reactions corroborates the existence of a transient carbocation (hidden intermediate) in the reactions with electron-rich alkenes. On the other hand, electron-poor alkenes proceed through a more synchronous concerted mechanism.
