For the problem of low light efficiency caused by divergent and uneven energy distribution of commercial port-able LED nail lamps, we propose an optical system composed of a Lambertian LED, a total internal reflection lens and a microlens array. According to the simulation results, the optical system can project a 130mm×70mm rectangular light pattern with a uniformity of 85.17% on a screen 70mm away. In addition, the optical utilized factor of the rectangular light pattern is 87.85%, and the optical efficiency of the entire optical system is 83.93%. &nbsp

When gel nails are UV cured, the reaction heat results in a rise in nail temperature, which causes the user to feel pain. In this study, four layers of single-color gel nails were used to measure and analyze the temperature rise of each layer of gel resin during UV curing. The measurement results show that the temperature variations of the base gel and color gel layers were 1.55°C and 1.56°C, respectively, and the temperatures of the builder and sealer rose higher, with an average of 3.96°C and 3.54°C, respectively. The results show that the temperature rise was related to the thickness of the resin applied by the nail technician and varied from time to time, which could be solved by using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Using a microprocessor and PC to analyze the temperature rise curve in the cloud is conducive to finding how the resin is cured in real-time and adjusting the intensity and duration of the UV light accordingly to keep the temperature variation within the threshold. &nbsp

This study evaluated the anti-inflammation effect of the three main short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) on Acinetobacter baumannii-induced THP-1 cells. The three main SCFAs could inhibit A. baumannii-stimulated THP-1 cell NF-κB pathway activity and the expressions of NLRP3 inflamma-some and GSDMD, and increase autophagy. The three main SCFAs, especially the sodium butyrate (NaB), had the effect of down-regulation of ROS and TLR-2 expression in THP-1 cells. NaB and sodium propionate (NaPc), but not sodium acetate (NaAc), dramatically suppressed IL-1β and IFN-γ expression. The results indicated that NaB and NaPc could significantly inhibit the inflammation of THP-1 cells induced by A. baumannii, and the inhibitory effect was in the order of NaB > NaPc > NaAC. NaB and NaPc may inhibit inflammation through TLR-2/NF-κB/ROS/NLRP3 signaling pathway.

Mesenteric vein thrombosis is extremely rare in children, with only a few case reports in the literature. Most mesenteric vein thrombosis cases involve the superior mesenteric vein. Acute mesenteric vascular occlusion is associated with a high mortality rate. Early detection and aggressive management are imperative to prevent thrombus progression, bowel infarction, and death. This report describes a 7-year-old boy who suffered from bloody stool for one week. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed no abnormalities, while a colonoscopy revealed only nodular lymphoid hyperplasia. A Meckel’s diverticulum scan revealed negative findings. Abdominal computerized tomography showed thrombi in the right portal branch, main portal vein, splenic vein, and inferior mesenteric vein. Symptoms were relieved after the patient was treated with rivaroxaban 10 mg orally once a day. This case report characterizes a rare cause of bloody stool in children. If a patient presents with hematochezia with or without abdominal pain, abdominal venous thrombosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis because of its high mortality and morbidity rate. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can save a patient’s life. &nbsp

BackgroundOwing to the lack of valid biomarkers, the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis relies solely on the behavioral phenotypes of children. Several researchers have suggested an association between ASD and inflammation; however, the complex relationship between the two is unelucidated to date. Therefore, the current study aims to comprehensively identify novel circulating ASD inflammatory biomarkers.MethodsOlink proteomics was applied to compare the plasma inflammation-related protein changes in a group of the healthy children (HC, n = 33) and another with ASD (n = 31). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) of the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were calculated. The functional analysis of the DEPs was performed using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia Genes and Genomes. Pearson correlation tests were used employed to analyze the correlation between the DEPs and clinical features.ResultsA total of 13 DEPs were significantly up-regulated in the ASD group compared with the HC group. The four proteins, namely, STAMBP, ST1A1, SIRT2, and MMP-10 demonstrated good diagnostic accuracy with the corresponding AUCs (95% confidence interval, CI) of 0.7218 (0.5946–0.8489), 0.7107 (0.5827–0.8387), 0.7016 (0.5713–0.8319), and 0.7006 (0.568–0.8332). Each panel of STAMBP and any other differential protein demonstrated a better classification performance [AUC values from 0.7147 (0.5858–0.8436, STAMBP/AXIN1) to 0.7681 (0.6496–0.8867, STAMBP/MMP-10)]. These DEP profiles were enriched in immune and inflammatory response pathways, including TNF and NOD-like receptor signaling pathways. The interaction between STAMBP and SIRT2 (R = 0.97, p = 8.52 × 10−39) was found to be the most significant. In addition, several DEPs related to clinical features in patients with ASD, particularly AXIN1 (R = 0.36, p = 0.006), SIRT2 (R = 0.34, p = 0.010) and STAMBP (R = 0.34, p = 0.010), were positively correlated with age and parity, indicating that older age and higher parity may be the inflammation-related clinical factors in ASD.ConclusionInflammation plays a crucial role in ASD, and the up-regulated inflammatory proteins may serve as potential early diagnostic biomarkers for ASD.

γ-Secretase is an aspartyl intramembrane protease that cleaves the amyloid precursor protein (APP) involved in Alzheimer's disease pathology and other transmembrane proteins. Substrate-bound structures reveal a stable hybrid β-sheet immediately following the substrate scissile bond consisting of β1 and β2 from the enzyme and β3 from the substrate. Molecular dynamics simulations and enhanced sampling simulations demonstrate that the hybrid β-sheet stability is strongly correlated with the formation of a stable cleavage-compatible active geometry and it also controls water access to the active site. The hybrid β-sheet is only stable for substrates with 3 or more C-terminal residues beyond the scissile bond. The simulation model allowed us to predict the effect of Pro and Phe mutations that weaken the formation of the hybrid β-sheet which were confirmed by experimental testing. Our study provides a direct explanation why γ-secretase preferentially cleaves APP in steps of 3 residues and how the hybrid β-sheet facilitates γ-secretase proteolysis.

The Gobi Desert in East Asia experiences dust outbreaks during the spring, which are often caused by high winds associated with Mongolian cyclones. The radiative forcing that arises from dust aerosols could affect the intensity and movement of Mongolian cyclones and cold fronts. A case study on a Mongolian cyclone that occurred during 18–22 March 2010 in East Asia examines these factors using an atmosphere-dust coupled model. Our numerical results show that dust’s impact on the intensity of the cyclone and its cold front varies between day and night and depends on the relative position of the weather systems of interest to the dust plume, i.e., the edge or the main dust plume region. When the dust plume approaches the cold front, most of the dust is trapped behind the cold front at low levels, but a small amount of dust extends to the middle levels, thereby reaching the warm side of the middle-level front. As a result, dust weakens the intensity of the low-level front and intensifies the middle-level front during the daytime, modifying the cold front oppositely at night. On the other hand, dust influences the cyclone in two phases. During the first phase, the dust plume edge arrives at the center of the cyclone in the daytime and warms the region, slightly intensifying the cyclone. During the second phase, the major dust plume feeds into the cyclone center in the early morning. The net dust effect is negative, which cools the cyclone center and decreases or stops the intensification. Subsequently, the cyclone is taken over by a nearby cyclonic circulation downstream. The dust plume approaches the new cyclone center, which repeats a similar pattern of intensity change: intensifying and then leveling off. Our results show that dust has no apparent influence on the movement of the cyclone and its cold front for this case study.

Existing studies have confirmed the accuracy of arterial spin labeling (ASL) in differentiating between primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) and high-grade glioma (HGG). We aimed to consolidate the existing evidence with a meta-analysis. Six literature databases were searched for relevant papers. After assessing the quality of studies, bivariate regression was performed, and the pooled sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic score, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the area under the curve (AUC) of the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve were calculated, along with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Deeks’ test was used to determine risk of publication bias. Ten high-quality studies, comprising 151 patients with PCNSL and 455 with HGG, were included. The pooled SEN was 0.79 (95% CI: 0.72–0.85), pooled SPE was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.84–0.94), pooled PLR was 8.07 (95% CI: 5.01–13.02), pooled NLR was 0.23 (95% CI: 0.17–0.32), pooled diagnostic score was 3.56 (95% CI: 2.94–4.18), and pooled DOR was 35.10 (95% CI: 18.83–65.45). The AUC of SROC was 0.86 (95% CI: 0.83–0.89). No publication bias was found. ASL demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy in differentiating between PCNSL and HGG.

The raphe nuclei comprise nearly all of 5-hydroxytryptaminergic (5-HTergic) neurons in the brain and are widely acknowledged to participate in the modulation of neural excitability. "Excitability-inhibition imbalance" results in a variety of brain disorders, including epilepsy. Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by hypersynchronous epileptic seizures accompanied by many psychological, social, cognitive consequences. Current antiepileptic drugs and other therapeutics are not ideal to control epilepsy and its comorbidities. Cumulative evidence suggests that the raphe nuclei and 5-HTergic system play an important role in epilepsy and epilepsy-associated comorbidities. Seizure activities propagate to the raphe nuclei and induce various alterations in different subregions of the raphe nuclei at the cellular and molecular levels. Intervention of the activity of raphe nuclei and raphe 5-HTergic system with pharmacological or genetic approaches, deep brain stimulation or optogenetics produces indeed diverse and even contradictory effects on seizure and epilepsy-associated comorbidities in different epilepsy models. Nevertheless, there are still many open questions left, especially regarding to the relationship between 5-HTergic neural circuit and epilepsy. Understanding of 5-HTergic network in a circuit- and molecule-specific way may not only be therapeutically relevant for increasing the drug specificity and precise treatment in epilepsy, but also provide critical hints for other brain disorders with abnormal neural excitability. In this review we focus on the roles of the raphe 5-HTergic system in epilepsy and epilepsy-associated comorbidities. Besides, further perspectives about the complexity and diversity of the raphe nuclei in epilepsy are also addressed.

Cephalosporin antibiotics, a group of widely prescribed antibiotics, are frequently detected in wastewater effluent and in the natural aquatic environment. Materials have been sought to effectively degrade the antibiotics. In this study, a novel high-iron clay was prepared with potassium ferrate and montmorillonite via a strong alkaline in-situ synthesis method. Degradation of cefazolin sodium (CFZ) by this novel Fe (VI)-clay was investigated. The optimal conditions for the degradation of CFZ were determined using a single factor experiment and response surface optimization method. We found that 89.84 % removal efficiency was obtained in 137 min when pH value was 5.16 and Fe (VI)-clay dosage was 0.79 g/100mL. The CFZ degradation mechanism was studied by the Density Functional Theory (DFT) in combination with spectroscopic and mass spectroscopic analysis. The spectroscopic characteristics of the products at different stages showed that the oxidation decomposition reaction occurred during the degradation of CFZ by Fe(VI) -clay. Further, DFT calculation combined with GC-MS results showed that the degradation pathways of CFZ by the Fe (VI)-clay was mainly the cleavage of β-lactam, thiadiazole, tetrazole and dihydrothiazine rings.

Attention-based models of categorization and associative learning have received considerable support from human learning phenomena in which multiple predictive cues compete for association with outcomes. Among these, several phenomena (e.g. the highlighting effect and inverse base-rate effect) lend strong support to models that propose attention is driven by the experience of prediction error, and is distributed strategically to minimize prediction error during current and future learning. Here we explore the possibility that attention is determined instead by a relatively simple combination of stimulus novelty and association strength. We apply the model to several key findings in the literature on the inverse base-rate effect and related phenomena. Overall, the model provides a surprisingly good account of complex behavioral biases.

The study of quantum state transfer has led to a variety of research efforts utilizing quantum simulators. By exploiting the tunability of the qubit frequency and qubit-qubit coupling, a superconducting qubit chain can simulate various topological band models. In our study, we demonstrate that a spin-up state can be transported along a topological qubit chain by modulating the coupling strengths and the qubit frequencies. We here propose another more straightforward approach to theoretically interpret this state transfer process. We show that the Hilebert space of the qubit chain can be restricted into the subspace of the only two edge states when investigating this process, and the Hamiltonian can degenerate to a two-state Landau-Zener (LZ) model. Therefore the state transfer process in this topological qubit chain is equivalent to the same process through the adiabatic passage of the LZ model. The non-Hermitian skin effect under open boundary conditions is widely believed to originate from the intrinsic spectral topology under periodic boundary conditions. If the eigenspectra under periodic boundary conditions have no spectral windings (e.g., piecewise arcs) or a finite area on the complex plane, there will be no non-Hermitian skin effect with open boundaries. In this article, we demonstrate another scenario beyond this perception by introducing a two-dimensional periodically driven model. The effective Floquet Hamiltonian lacks intrinsic spectral topology and is proportional to the identity matrix (representing a single point on the complex plane) under periodic boundary conditions. Yet, the Floquet Hamiltonian exhibits a second-order skin effect that is robust against perturbations and disorder under open boundary conditions. We further reveal the dynamical origin of these second-order skin modes and illustrate that they are characterized by a dynamical topological invariant of the full time-evolution operator., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

With dense inputs, Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) is able to render photo-realistic novel views under static conditions. Although the synthesis quality is excellent, existing NeRF-based methods fail to obtain moderate three-dimensional (3D) structures. The novel view synthesis quality drops dramatically given sparse input due to the implicitly reconstructed inaccurate 3D-scene structure. We propose SfMNeRF, a method to better synthesize novel views as well as reconstruct the 3D-scene geometry. SfMNeRF leverages the knowledge from the self-supervised depth estimation methods to constrain the 3D-scene geometry during view synthesis training. Specifically, SfMNeRF employs the epipolar, photometric consistency, depth smoothness, and position-of-matches constraints to explicitly reconstruct the 3D-scene structure. Through these explicit constraints and the implicit constraint from NeRF, our method improves the view synthesis as well as the 3D-scene geometry performance of NeRF at the same time. In addition, SfMNeRF synthesizes novel sub-pixels in which the ground truth is obtained by image interpolation. This strategy enables SfMNeRF to include more samples to improve generalization performance. Experiments on two public datasets demonstrate that SfMNeRF surpasses state-of-the-art approaches. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery and is likely to cause the second loss of vision. Pharmacological PCO prophylaxis has been proved to be effective, yet no clinical option is available due to the lack of a suitable mode of administration. In this work, we propose a unique concept of NIR dual-triggered drug release from black phosphorus (BP)-based implantable intraocular lens (IOL) for controlled drug release and chemo-photothermal combination therapy of PCO. Here, IOL is used as a “reservoir” of doxorubicin-loaded black phosphorus (BP-DOX), and BP is used as NIR activation agent for controlled drug release and photothermal therapy. This BP-DOX integrated IOL, namely BP-DOX@IOL, shows the characteristics of good transmittance, good mechanical property, NIR dual-triggered drug release behaviors, and excellent photothermal efficacy. In vivo studies reveal that there is no PCO occurrence in rabbits' model by using BP-DOX@IOL combined NIR irradiation, which exhibits distinct superiority on inhibiting PCO than the control group (100% PCO occurrence) 28 days post-surgery. This novel IOL drug delivery system would be a promising strategy for the future clinical application for PCO prophylaxis and treatment.

Group testing (or pool testing), for example, Dorfman’s method or grid method, has been validated for COVID-19 RT-PCR tests and implemented widely by most laboratories in many countries. These methods take advantages since they reduce resources, time, and overall costs required for a large number of samples. However, these methods could have more false negative cases and lower sensitivity. In order to maintain both accuracy and efficiency for different prevalence, we provide a novel pooling strategy based on the grid method with an extra pool set and an optimized rule inspired by the idea of error-correcting codes. The mathematical analysis shows that (i) the proposed method has the best sensitivity among all the methods we compared, if the false negative rate (FNR) of an individual test is in the range [1%, 20%] and the FNR of a pool test is closed to that of an individual test, and (ii) the proposed method is efficient when the prevalence is below 10%. Numerical simulations are also performed to confirm the theoretical derivations. In summary, the proposed method is shown to be felicitous under the above conditions in the epidemic.

Cancer remains a serious social health problem, and immunotherapy has become the major treatments in tumor treatment. Additionally, improving the efficiency and safety of treatment is necessary. Further, more therapy targets are warranted for future tumor treatments. In this review, in addition to examining the currently recognized role of immune regulation, we focus on the proliferative role of 15 immune checkpoints in various tumors, including PD1, PD-L1, FGL1, CD155, CD47, SIRPα, CD276, IDO1, SIGLEC-15, TIM3, Galectin-9, CD70, CD27, 4-1BBL, and HVEM. We managed to conclude that various immune checkpoints such as PD1/PD-L1, FGL1, CD155, CD47/SIRPα, CD276, and SIGLEC-15 all regulate the cell cycle, and specifically through Cyclin D1 regulation. Furthermore, a variety of signal pathways engage in proliferation regulation, such as P13K, AKT, mTOR, and NK-κB, which are also the most common pathways involved in the regulation of immune checkpoint proliferation. Currently, only PD1/PD-L1, CD47/SIRPα, TIM3/Galectin-9, and CD70/CD27 checkpoints have been shown to interact with each other to regulate tumor proliferation in pairs. However, for other immune checkpoints, the role of their receptors or ligands in tumor proliferation regulation is still unknown, and we consider the enormous potential in this area. An increasing number of studies have validated the various role of immune checkpoints in tumors, and based on this literature review, we found that most of the immune checkpoints play a dual regulatory role in immunity and proliferation. Therefore, the related pathways in proliferation regulation can served the role of therapy targets in tumor therapy. Further, great potential is displayed by IDO1, SIGLEC-15, 4-1BBL, and HVEM in tumor proliferation regulation, which may become novel therapy targets in tumor treatment.

This study uses a coupled atmosphere-ocean model with different numerical settings to investigate the mean and eddy momentum transfer processes responsible for Typhoon Muifa's (2011) early rapid intensification (RI). Three experiments are conducted. Two use the coupled model with a horizontal resolution of either 1 km (HRL) or 3 km (LRL). The third (NoTCFB) is the same as LRL but excludes tropical cyclone (TC)-induced sea-surface temperature (SST) cooling. HRL reasonably reproduces Muifa's intensity during its rapid intensification and weakening periods. The azimuthal mean tangential and radial momentum budgets are analysed before the RI rates diverge between HRL and LRL. Results show that the dominant processes responsible for Muifa's intensification are different in HRL and LRL. For HRL, the net eddy effect intensifies the storm's circulation and contracts the eyewall during early RI, and it dominates the net mean-flow effect inside the radius of maximum wind (RMW), except near the surface and between 2 and 5km close to the RMW. In contrast, the mean and eddy effects in LRL almost cancel inside the RMW, while the mean-flow effects dominate and intensify tangential winds outside. Without TC-induced SST cooling, Muifa in NoTCFB reaches a similar storm intensity as in HRL but its rapid weakening rate is substantially underestimated. The dominant mechanisms for tangential wind intensification in NoTCFB are similar to those in LRL, but their magnitudes are larger, implying a misrepresentation of the dominant momentum transfer processes in NoTCFB during RI. For the radial momentum budget analysis, the dominant processes are similar among the three experiments except for some differences in their locations and strengths.

ObjectiveThe effect of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in acute ischemic stroke patients with prestroke disability (modified Rankin Scale score, mRS) ≥2) has not been well-studied. This study aimed to assess the safety and benefit of EVT in patients with prestroke disability.MethodsAccording to PRISMA guidelines, literature searching was performed using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases, for a series of acute ischemic stroke patients with prestroke mRS ≥2 treated by EVT. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool the rate of return to prestroke mRS and mortality at 3-month follow-up.ResultsIn total, 13 observational studies, with 2,625 patients, were analyzed. The rates of return to prestroke mRS in patients with prestroke mRS of 2–4 were 20% (120/588), 27% (218/827), and 31% (34/108), respectively. Patients with prestroke disability treated by EVT had a higher likelihood of return to prestroke mRS (relative risk, RR, 1.86; 95% CI 1.28–2.70) and a lower likelihood of mortality (RR 0.75; 95%CI 0.58–0.97) compared with patients with standard medical treatment. Successful recanalization (Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction grade 2b-3) after EVT gave a higher likelihood of return to prestroke mRS (RR 2.04; 95% CI 1.17–3.55) and lower mortality (RR 0.72; 95% CI 0.62–0.84) compared with unsuccessful reperfusion.ConclusionsAcute ischemic stroke patients with prestroke disability may benefit from EVT. Withholding EVT on the sole ground of prestroke disabilities may not be justified.Systematic Review Registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/.

Ultra-low wear or non-wear of moving parts is highly desirable because wear limits the service life and reliability of components, particularly under high temperatures. In this study, VN/Ag composites were prepared using vacuum hot-pressing sintering, and their microstructure and high-temperature tribological behaviour were studied. The results demonstrated that the tribological properties of VN ceramics remarkably improved because of metallic Ag. In particular, negative wear was detected in the VN/Ag composites at 700 °C. During the high-temperature tribology process, the evolution of Ag, V2O5, Ag3VO4, and AgVO3 caused by Ag and VN on the worn surface played a significant role in lubrication. In addition, the cell volumes of AgVO3 and Ag3VO4, which were produced via the expansive tribochemical reaction, were 75% and 103% larger than the sum of the cell volumes of VN and Ag. The cell volume expansion compensated for the mechanical damage caused by the wear, possessed an excellent role in wear reduction, and thus contributed to the improvement of high-temperature lubricating materials with high reliability and long service lives.

This study aimed to explore the psychological mechanisms through which psychological safety and self-efficacy mediate the relationship between leader-expressed humility and employee voice. Moreover, attribution theory was applied to examine the possible detrimental effects of leader-expressed humility when employees perceive manipulative intentions in their humble leader. The current study proposed the leader’s manipulative intention as a moderator to weaken the indirect relationships between leader-expressed humility and employee voice through psychological safety and self-efficacy. Time-lagged supervisor–subordinate matched data were used to test the model. Our findings reveal leader’s manipulative intention weakens the positive effect that leader-expressed humility impacts on employee voice through psychological safety and self-efficacy. The implications of the findings were discussed from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

Purpose. To analyze the coupling effect between composite slope geometrical parameters. Methods. The slope angle and excavation depth are coupled with load which is waste dump in this case. Several models were created and analyzed to capture their coupling effect and interactions using FLAC/Slope. Findings. When the slope angle and excavation depth are coupled with a load such as that of a waste dump, the factor of safety decreases. But a suitable dumping position can prove vital to enhancing stability. The primary cause of this phenomenon is that the stresses induced by the waste dump decrease as the dump is moved away from the crest of the slope and the stress induced within the zone of active wedge beneath the dump reduces on the reference slip plane. Hence, it can be said that the position of the waste dump in the formation of a composite slope plays a key role in enhancing stability. Factor of safety have the same influence pattern for all parameters induced by stress as that of influence rule. The results obtained from the finite element stress analysis are the same with those obtained for the slope stability analysis. Originality. The current research presents for the first time the coupling effect of the composite slope geometrical parameters and the results of finite element stress analysis, which are similar to those of slope stability analysis. Practical implications. The current research results can be used to effectively analyze and design the composite slopes in soft rocks specially in surface mines.

Rice planthoppers, including brown planthopper (BPH) and white-backed planthopper (WBPH), are the most destructive pests in Asian rice cultivation regions. Planthopper resistance genes that have been mapped and characterized advance our understanding of underlying resistance mechanisms and facilitate the breeding of resistant varieties, thereby contributing to an efficient pest management strategy. In this study, a novel resistance gene Bph38 derived from the wild rice species Oryza rufipogon Griff. was found to confer high resistance to BPH and WBPH. Conventional mapping was performed to identify regions associated with BPH and WBPH resistance, and two mapping efforts led to the same region on chromosome 4 flanked by markers RM16563 and RM16763. Bulked-segregant analysis and next-generation sequencing were performed using the same population to detect the resistance gene. Conventional mapping narrowed the region to a 12.3-Mb segment, and fine mapping using BC1F2 recombinants identified a 79-kb segment flanked by markers YM112 and YM190. Near-isogenic lines (NILs) carrying Bph38 in the 9311 (indica) and BR54 (japonica) genetic backgrounds were developed by crossing and backcrossing with marker-assisted selection. The agronomic traits and BPH and WBPH resistance of the NILs were similar to those of the recurrent parents. Mandatory feeding and host-choice tests revealed that Bph38 showed both antibiotic and antixenotic effects in both insects, with stronger effects in indica-background lines. Further fine mapping and characterization of the major gene may result in map-based cloning of the gene and allow its application in breeding insect-resistant rice varieties.

There is a high mortality rate for infants with visceral perforations. Clinical imaging of this condition includes free air in the abdomen with abdominal plain radiography or lateral decubitus radiographs. An important disease that is easily ignored in the perinatal period is meconium plug syndrome, which causes functional obstruction in the colon that leads to dilated bowel loops in abdominal plain radiography. We report a female newborn who had a suspected bowel obstruction during prenatal examination because of polyhydramnios. The initial plain abdominal film showed a large volume of air accumulation in the peritoneum. An emergent exploratory laparotomy was performed and it revealed that there was no free a3 ir nor ascites in the peritoneal cavity. The proximal small bowel was severely dilated and a meconium plug at the splenic flexure was found. The image of air in the patient’s small bowel and peritoneal cavity in the anterior–posterior view and image of the left decubitus view of the abdomen were similar in this case to the degree that the clinicians could not differentiate them, leading to an unnecessary exploration laparotomy. &nbsp

However, progress is limited due to the complexity of expressway engineering and application limitations of information technology. Design and delivery are still dominated by paper files, and the management of test and inspection data is still relatively extensive. Research to date into digital expressway construction has been piecemeal and fragmented with a lack of research related to the whole construction process and a data-centric information management system yet to be realized. In response, through literature research and semi-structured interviews, the framework of a data-driven digital whole-process highway construction management platform was determined. A whole process management platform was established according to the framework, and the functional application of the proposed platform was explained through a case. The framework is proposed from the perspective of the whole process of collaborative sharing., which provides a new way of thinking to solve the problems existing in the current field of expressway construction whole-process management. Herein a semi-aliphatic diamine 4,4′-(cyclohexylmethylene)bis(2-methylaniline) (CHMBMA) with a pendant cyclohexyl and two ortho-substituted methyl groups is synthesized from o-toluidine and cyclohexanecarbaldehyde by Mannich and rearrangement reactions. Then CHMBMA is polycondensed with five commercial aromatic dianhydrides by the high-temperature one-step method with the thermal imidization to produce a series of polyimides (PIs, PI-H(1–5)). The weight-averaged molecular weights ( M ws) of PI-H(1–5) are in the range from 9.08 × 104 to 27.48 × 104 g mol−1 with the polydispersity indices (PDI) from 3.29 to 6.13 by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurement. They are soluble in common organic solvents (such as THF, CHCl3 etc.) and can form transparent, tough films with light-color (Thickness: 20–26 μm) by the solution-casting method. The light transmittance of them is above 80% in the visible range from 400 to 760 nm. They exhibit excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength from 72.2 to 97.06 MPa and tensile modulus from 0.9 to 1.9 GPa. Furthermore, they also display low water absorption rates (5%) in the range from 466 to 480°C under N2 atmosphere and high glass transition temperatures ( T gs ≥ 319°C). As comparison, we also synthesize these PIs (PI-L(1–5)) by the low-temperature two-step method with the chemical imidization. The M ws of PI-L(1–5) are lower than those of PI-H(1–5), but the film color of PI-L(1–5) is relatively lighter than the corresponding one of PI-H(1–5). In summary, the introduction of cyclohexyl and ortho-substituted methyl groups into the backbone can improve the solubility of PIs and the transparency of their corresponding films without reducing their T gs.

Background:Protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO, EC 1.3.3.4) is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of chlorophyll and heme, also the target of different types of herbicides. Thiazole compounds shown excellent biological activity, can be designed by using active groups docking for new PPO inhibitors.Objective:The objective of this study was to synthsize a series of aryl thiazole compounds as PPO inhibitors.Methods:In this study, a series of aryl thiazole compounds derivatives 11a-l were obtained from 2- chloro-5-nitrobenzoic acid as the starting material via esterification, Iron powder reduction, diazotization, Hantzsch reaction and final acylation. All synthesized compounds have been tested for their herbicidal activities as a PPO inhibitors.Results:The Petri dish test indicated that all compounds exhibited good herbicidal activities at 200 mg/L using culture dish. And the post-emergence tests showed that at 150g.ai/ha on weed stem leaf spray treatment, some of the title compounds exhibited 80% inhibition rate against the dicotyledonou weeds Amaranthus retroflexus and Eclipta prostrate.Conclusion:Good activity was noted for some compounds that compounds 11a, 11b, 11c, 11g, 11h had 80% inhibition on stems and leaves of Amaranthus retroflexus at 150g.ai/ha.

The effective removal of heavy metals and soluble microbial products from wastewater is crucial for ensuring a safe environment and good quality human health. The present work investigated the potential of eggshell (ES) waste as an adsorbent for removing heavy metals and soluble microbial products. ES was firstly used to capture heavy metal ions, and the eggshell–metal (ES-M) complex was then applied to remove soluble microbial products (e.g., proteins) from aqueous solution. In this study, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was selected as a model protein-based contaminant. The equilibrium and kinetic characteristics of soluble protein removed by ES were evaluated in batch mode involving parameters such as metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+), operating temperatures (277–323 K), and particle size of ES (100–700 µm). The isotherm curves were well-fitted by Langmuir–Freundlich model. As the temperature increased from 277 to 323 K, the maximum binding capacity for BSA increased from 25.22 to 34.28 (mg BSA/g ES-Zn). The negative values of ΔG° indicated the spontaneous nature of the protein adsorption, while the kinetic of protein adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model. ES functionalized with heavy metal ions acted as an effective pseudo-chelating adsorbent for the removal of soluble protein from wastewater. Chelates of Zn–BSA found on the ES complexes were found to be highly stable, indicating a minimal possibility of secondary pollution caused by these Zn- and BSA-containing ES complexes. The ES-Zn complex can be potentially used as an adsorbent for removing soluble microbial products in wastewater prior to the membrane filtration.

Calcium phosphate based biomaterials have been widely studied in biomedical areas. Herein, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) nanospheres and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods were separately prepared and used for coating tantalum (Ta) scaffolds with a polymer of polylactide (PLA). We have found that different crystal phases of calcium phosphate coated on Ta scaffolds displayed different effects on the surface morphologies, mineralization and bovine serum albumin (BSA) release. The ACP-PLA and HA-PLA coated on Ta scaffold were more favorable for in vitro mineralization than bare and PLA coated Ta scaffolds, and resulted in a highly hydrophilic surfaces. Meanwhile, the osteoblast-like cells (MG63) showed favorable properties of adhesion and spreading on both ACP-PLA and HA-PLA coated Ta scaffolds. The ACP-PLA and HA-PLA coated Ta scaffolds showed a high biocompatibility and potential applications for in vivo bone defect repair.

Bursicon is a heterodimeric neuropeptide composed of Burs-α and Burs-β subunits that plays an important role in cuticle tanning and wing expansion in insects. In this study, full-length cDNAs of Burs-α (LdBurs-α) and Burs-β (LdBurs-β) genes were identified in gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) and cloned. The 480 bp and 420 bp open reading frames (ORFs) encode 159 and 129 amino acid polypeptides, respectively. LdBurs-α and LdBurs-β have 11 conserved cysteine residues, and LdBurs-α and LdBurs-β genes were expressed during all developmental stages according to quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), with highest expression in the egg stage. High expression levels were also detected in the haemolymph, cuticle and head. To explore the physiological functions of LdBurs-α and LdBurs-β, the genes were knocked down in larvae and pupae using RNA interference (RNAi), and expression levels of LdBurs-α and LdBurs-β were decreased by 42.26-80.09%. Wing defects were observed in L. dispar pupae following Ldbursion silencing, with a phenotypic percentage ranging from 10.17% to 15.00%. RNAi-mediated knockdown of Ldbursicon prevented the expansion of male and female L. dispar adult wings, with malformation rates ranging from 6.38% and 30.00% to 57.69% and 69.23%, but no cuticle tanning defects were observed in pupae or adults. The results indicate that bursicon plays a key role in wing expansion in L. dispar adults, making it a potentially novel molecular target for insecticide-based control of this pest species.

Quantum simulation enables study of many-body systems in non-equilibrium by mapping to a controllable quantum system, providing a new tool for computational intractable problems. Here, using a programmable quantum processor with a chain of 10 superconducting qubits interacted through tunable couplers, we simulate the one-dimensional generalized Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper model for three different phases, i.e., extended, localized and critical phases. The properties of phase transitions and many-body dynamics are studied in the presence of quasi-periodic modulations for both off-diagonal hopping coefficients and on-site potentials of the model controlled respectively by adjusting strength of couplings and qubit frequencies. We observe the spin transport for initial single- and multi-excitation states in different phases, and characterize phase transitions by experimentally measuring dynamics of participation entropies. Our experimental results demonstrate that the newly developed tunable coupling architecture of superconducting processor extends greatly the simulation realms for a wide variety of Hamiltonians, and may trigger further investigations on various quantum and topological phenomena., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, with Supplementary Materials

The research topic of sketch-to-portrait generation has witnessed a boost of progress with deep learning techniques. The recently proposed StyleGAN architectures achieve state-of-the-art generation ability but the original StyleGAN is not friendly for sketch-based creation due to its unconditional generation nature. To address this issue, we propose a direct conditioning strategy to better preserve the spatial information under the StyleGAN framework. Specifically, we introduce Spatially Conditioned StyleGAN (SC-StyleGAN for short), which explicitly injects spatial constraints to the original StyleGAN generation process. We explore two input modalities, sketches and semantic maps, which together allow users to express desired generation results more precisely and easily. Based on SC-StyleGAN, we present DrawingInStyles, a novel drawing interface for non-professional users to easily produce high-quality, photo-realistic face images with precise control, either from scratch or editing existing ones. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations show the superior generation ability of our method to existing and alternative solutions. Regional Climate Models (RCM) describe the meso scale global atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and serve as dynamical downscaling models. In other words, RCMs use atmospheric and oceanic climate output from General Circulation Models (GCM) to develop a higher resolution climate output. They are computationally demanding and, depending on the application, require several orders of magnitude of computer time more than statistical climate downscaling. In this paper we describe how to use a spatio-temporal statistical model with varying coefficients (VC), as a downscaling emulator for a RCM using varying coefficients. In order to estimate the proposed model, two options are compared: INLA, and varycoef. We set up a simulation to compare the performance of both methods for building a statistical downscaling emulator for RCM, and then show that the emulator works properly for NARCCAP data. The results show that the model is able to estimate non-stationary marginal effects, which means that the downscaling output can vary over space. Furthermore, the model has flexibility to estimate the mean of any variable in space and time, and has good prediction results. INLA was the fastest method for all the cases, and the approximation with best accuracy to estimate the different parameters from the model and the posterior distribution of the response variable.
