Leucine is a critical amino acid stimulating myofibrillar protein synthesis (MyoPS). The consumption of higher leucine-containing drinks stimulates MyoPS, but we know less about higher leucine solid foods. Here, we examined the effect of short-term resistance exercise training (STRT) combined with supplementation of a protein and leucine-enriched bar, compared with STRT alone, on integrated (%/day) rates of MyoPS and anabolic protein signaling. In a nonblinded, randomized crossover trial, eight young adults performed four sessions of STRT without or while consuming the study bar (STRT+Leu, 16 g of protein containing ∼3 g of leucine) for two 4-day phases, separated by 2 days nonexercise (Rest) washout. In combination with serial muscle biopsies, deuterated water permitted the measurement of MyoPS and protein signaling phosphorylation. MyoPS during STRT (1.43 ± 0.06%/day) and STRT+Leu (1.53 ± 0.06%/day) were greater than Rest (1.31 ± 0.05%/day), and MyoPS during STRT+Leu (1.53 ± 0.06%/day) was greater than STRT alone (1.43 ± 0.06%/day). STRT+Leu increased the ratio of phosphorylated to total mechanistic target of rapamycin and 4EBP1 compared to Rest. Engaging in STRT increased integrated MyoPS and protein signaling in young adults and was enhanced with increased protein intake derived from a leucine-enriched protein bar. Skeletal muscle plays a critical role in physical function and metabolic health. Muscle is a highly adaptable tissue that responds to resistance exercise (RE; loading) by hypertrophying, or during muscle disuse, RE mitigates muscle loss. Resistance exercise training (RET)-induced skeletal muscle hypertrophy is a product of external (e.g., RE programming, diet, some supplements) and internal variables (e.g., mechanotransduction, ribosomes, gene expression, satellite cells activity). RE is undeniably the most potent nonpharmacological external variable to stimulate the activation/suppression of internal variables linked to muscular hypertrophy or countering disuse-induced muscle loss. Here, we posit that despite considerable research on the impact of external variables on RET and hypertrophy, internal variables (i.e., inherent skeletal muscle biology) are dominant in regulating the extent of hypertrophy in response to external stimuli. Thus, identifying the key internal skeletal muscle-derived variables that mediate the translation of external RE variables will be pivotal to determining the most effective strategies for skeletal muscle hypertrophy in healthy persons. Such work will aid in enhancing function in clinical populations, slowing functional decline, and promoting physical mobility. We provide up-to-date, evidence-based perspectives of the mechanisms regulating RET-induced skeletal muscle hypertrophy.

Supplementation with Fortetropin® (FOR), a naturally occurring component from fertilized egg yolks, reduces circulating myostatin concentration. We hypothesized that FOR would mitigate muscle atrophy during immobilization. We examined the effect of FOR supplementation on muscle size and strength during 2-wk of single-leg immobilization and recovery. Twenty-four healthy young men (22 ± 2 yrs; BMI = 24.3 ± 2.9 kg/m2) were randomly allocated to either a Fortetropin® supplement (FOR-SUPP, n = 12) group consuming 19.8 g/d of FOR or placebo (PLA-SUPP, n = 12) group consuming energy- and macronutrient-matched cheese powder for 6-wk. The 6-wk period consisted of 2-wk run-in, 2-wk single-leg immobilization, and 2-wk recovery phase returning to habitual physical activities. Ultrasonography, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, muscle biopsies and isometric peak torque assessments were performed prior to and following each phase (days 1, 14, 28, and 42) to measure vastus lateralis and muscle fiber cross-section area (CSA), leg lean mass (LM), and muscular strength. Blood samples were taken on days 1 and 42 for measurement of plasma myostatin concentration, which increased in PLA-SUPP (4221 ± 541 pg/mL to 6721 ± 864 pg/mL, P = 0.013) but not in FOR-SUPP (5487 ± 489 pg/mL to 5383 ± 781 pg/mL, P = 0.900). After the immobilization phase, vastus lateralis CSA, LM, and isometric peak torque were decreased by 7.9 ± 1.7% (P < 0.001), -1.6 ± 0.6% (P = 0.037), and -18.7 ± 2.7% (P < 0.001) respectively, with no difference between groups. The decreased peak torque was recovered after 2-wk of normal activity (vs. day 1, P = 0.129); however, CSA and LM were not recovered (vs. day 1, P < 0.001 and P = 0.003, respectively), with no differences between groups. Supplementation with FOR prevented the rise in circulating myostatin but not disuse-induced muscle atrophy in young men after 2-wk of single-leg immobilization.

Organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskite solar cells are promising for next-generation thin-film solar cells, demonstrating power conversion efficiency exceeding 25%. In particular, single-crystal perovskite materials are estimated to possess superior optoelectronic properties that can further enhance the efficiency. However, fabricating thin single-crystal perovskite for a light-absorber layer remains challenging. In this study, a 40-µm-thick single-crystalline MAPbBr3 perovskite is fabricated by inverse temperature crystallization (ITC) with a selective seed-transfer technique. By using a separate seed growth process and a seed-transfer process, a 16.23-mm2-large single domain high-quality single-crystalline MAPbBr3 perovskite can be grown without additional nucleation. The grown single-crystal MAPbBr3 exhibits a low surface roughness of 0.51 nm and low trap density of 7.61 × 108 cm−3. We also fabricate solar cells with single-crystalline MAPbBr3 using a glass substrate coated with SnO2 and indium-tin-oxide thin films. The single-crystal MAPbBr3-based solar cells demonstrate a power conversion efficiency of 4.31%.

Summary: Skeletal muscle is the largest organ of the human body and plays a pivotal role in whole-body homeostasis through the maintenance of physical and metabolic health. Establishing strategies aimed at increasing the amount, and minimising loss, of muscle mass are of upmost importance. Muscle mass is primarily dictated by the meal-to-meal fluctuations in muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown (MPB), each of which can be quantified through the use of stable isotopically labelled tracers. Importantly, both MPS and MPB can be influenced by external factors such as nutritional manipulation, specifically protein ingestion, and changes in loading via exercise. To date, research involving stable isotopic tracers has focused on determining the optimal dose, timing surrounding bouts of exercise, distribution and composition of protein to maximally stimulate MPS and inhibit MPB, both at rest and following exercise. In this review we focus on the use of these stable isotopically-labeled tracers to unravel the intricacies of skeletal muscle protein turnover in response to specific nutritional interventions.

Purpose This is the first study to examine whether age impacts the response of single muscle fibers to high/low frequency and high/low volume electrical pulse stimulation. We performed in vitro experiments to evaluate the effect of low-frequency high-volume electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) on mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, and satellite cell activation in singles fibers of young and aged muscles. Methods Isolated single fibers from gastocnemius in 12-wk (n=21) and 72-wk (n=21) old male C57BL/6 mice were divided into four groups: 1) control (Con) received no EPS, 2) low-frequency low-volume EPS (LL), 3) low-frequency high-volume EPS (LH), and 4) high-frequency low-volume EPS (HL) were made to contract using independent EPS protocols. Satellite cell activation and anabolic pathway (mTOR and MAPK signaling) were measured before and after EPS. Results The number of quiescent (Pax7+/Ki67-) and active (Pax7+/Ki67+) satellite cells, myonuclear content and the phosphorylation of 4E-BP1 and ERK were higher in young when compared with old. However, regardless of age, LH and HL EPS significantly increased the number of activate satellite cells (142%, both) and phosphorylation of mTOR (129% and 133%, respectively), p70S6K (133% and 136%, respectively) and 4E-BP1 (140% and 129%, respectively) compared with Con. The protein expression of ERK phosphorylation only increased by LH EPS in both the young and old groups (123% and 125%, respectively). Conclusion Low-frequency high-volume EPS stimulated satellite cell activation and the mTOR signaling pathway in older similar to young muscle.

PURPOSE There is a lack of knowledge as to how different exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programming affects skeletal muscle adaptations in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. We first characterized the skeletal muscle from adults with CAD compared with a group of age- and sex-matched healthy adults. We then determined the effects of a traditional moderate-intensity continuous exercise program (TRAD) or a stair climbing-based high-intensity interval training program (STAIR) on skeletal muscle metabolism in CAD. METHODS Sixteen adults (n = 16, 61 ± 7 yr), who had undergone recent treatment for CAD, were randomized to perform (3 d·wk-1) either TRAD (n = 7, 30 min at 60%-80% of peak heart rate) or STAIR (n = 9, 3 × 6 flights) for 12 wk. Muscle biopsies were collected at baseline in both CAD and healthy controls (n = 9), and at 4 and 12 wk after exercise training in CAD patients undertaking TRAD or STAIR. RESULTS We found that CAD had a lower capillary-to-fiber ratio (C/Fi, 35% ± 25%, P = 0.06) and capillary-to-fiber perimeter exchange (CFPE) index (23% ± 29%, P = 0.034) in Type II fibers compared with healthy controls. However, 12 wk of cardiac rehabilitation with either TRAD or STAIR increased C/Fi (Type II, 23% ± 14%, P < 0.001) and CFPE (Type I, 10% ± 23%, P < 0.01; Type II, 18% ± 22%, P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Cardiac rehabilitation via TRAD or STAIR exercise training improved the compromised skeletal muscle microvascular phenotype observed in CAD patients.

A progressive decrement in muscle mass and muscle function, sarcopoenia, accompanies ageing. The loss of skeletal muscle mass and function is the main feature of sarcopoenia. Preventing the loss of muscle mass is relevant since sarcopoenia can have a significant impact on mobility and the quality of life of older people. Dietary protein and physical activity have an essential role in slowing muscle mass loss and helping to maintain muscle function. However, the current recommendations for daily protein ingestion for older persons appear to be too low and are in need of adjustment. In this review, we discuss the skeletal muscle response to protein ingestion, and review the data examining current dietary protein recommendations in the older subjects. Furthermore, we review the concept of protein quality and the important role that nutrient-dense protein (NDP) sources play in meeting overall nutrient requirements and improving dietary quality. Overall, the current evidence endorses an increase in the daily ingestion of protein with emphasis on the ingestion of NDP choices by older adults.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported that low-load high-repetition (LLHR) resistance exercise can induce muscle hypertrophy to a similar extent as high-load low-repetition (HLLR). Skeletal muscle plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of physical and metabolic health and, critically, mobility. Accordingly, strategies focused on increasing the quality and quantity of skeletal muscle are relevant, and resistance exercise is foundational to the process of functional hypertrophy. Much of our current understanding of skeletal muscle hypertrophy can be attributed to the development and utilization of stable isotopically labeled tracers. We know that resistance exercise and sufficient protein intake act synergistically and provide the most effective stimuli to enhance skeletal muscle mass; however, the molecular intricacies that underpin the tremendous response variability to resistance exercise-induced hypertrophy are complex. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent studies with the aim of shedding light on key regulatory mechanisms that dictate hypertrophic gains in skeletal muscle mass. We also aim to provide a brief up-to-date summary of the recent advances in our understanding of skeletal muscle hypertrophy in response to resistance training in humans.

The methods and performance of a fast reactor multigroup cross section (XS) generation code EXUS-F are described that is capable of directly processing Evaluated Nuclear Data File format nuclear data files. RECONR of NJOY is used to generate pointwise XS data, and Doppler broadening is incorporated by the Gauss–Hermite quadrature method. The self-shielding effect is incorporated in the ultrafine group XSs in the resolved and unresolved resonance ranges. Functions to generate scattering transfer matrices and fission spectrum matrices are realized. The extended transport approximation is used in zero-dimensional calculations, whereas the collision probability method and the method of characteristics are used for one-dimensional cylindrical geometry and two-dimensional hexagonal geometry problems, respectively. Verification calculations are performed first for various homogeneous mixtures and cylindrical problems. It is confirmed that the spectrum calculations and the corresponding multigroup XS generations are performed adequately in that the reactivity errors are less than 50 pcm with the McCARD Monte Carlo solutions. The nTRACER core calculations are performed with the EXUS-F–generated 47 group XSs for the two-dimensional Advanced Burner Reactor 1000 benchmark problem. The reactivity error of 160 pcm and the root mean square error of the pin powers of 0.7% indicate that EXUF-F generates properly the broad-group XSs. PURPOSE This study was performed to investigate the effect of maternal exercise on cardiac and skeletal muscle telomere length and telomere repeat binding factor 2 (TRF2) in rat offspring. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats (10 wk, N=21) were randomly assigned into control (CON), exercise during pregnancy (ExD), and exercise before and during pregnancy (ExBD) groups. Maternal training was performed on a rodent treadmill for 1 hour at 60-75% VO2max for 3 weeks (5 d/w) before and during pregnancy respectively. The offspring were sacrificed at birth and telomere length and TRF2 expression were measured with cardiac and skeletal muscle samples. RESULTS CON group had significantly longer telomere length (p=.011, p=.049) and higher TRF2 expression (p=.011, p=.002) than other two groups in skeletal muscle of offspring. In the cardiac muscle, CON group showed longer telomere length compared with ExD group in offspring (p=.001). CONCLUSIONS Intense maternal exercise before or during pregnancy may negatively affect their new offspring’s cardiac and skeletal muscle telomere length and TRF2 expression.

Lower-load (LL), higher-repetition resistance exercise training (RET) can increase muscle mass in a similar degree as higher-load (HL), lower-repetition RET. However, little is known about how LL and HL RET modulate other aspects of the RET phenotype such as satellite cells, myonuclei, and mitochondrial proteins. We aimed to investigate changes in muscle mass, muscle strength, satellite cell activity, myonuclear addition, and mitochondrial protein content after prolonged RET with LL and HL RET.We recruited 21 young men and randomly assigned them to perform 10 wk RET (leg press, leg extension, and leg curl) three times per week with the following conditions: 80FAIL (80% one-repetition maximum [1RM] performed to volitional fatigue), 30WM (30%1RM with volume matched to 80FAIL), and 30FAIL (30%1RM to volitional fatigue). Skeletal muscle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis pre- and post-RET intervention.After 10 wk of RET, only 30FAIL and 80FAIL showed an increase in peak torque and type I fiber cross-sectional area (P0.05). Moreover, only 30FAIL resulted in a significant decrease in the myonuclear domain of type II muscle fibers and an increase in mitochondrial proteins related to autophagy, fission, and fusion (all P0.05).We discovered that LL RET was effective at increasing the content of several mitochondrial proteins. Similar to previous research, we found that changes in muscle mass and strength were independent of load when repetitions were performed to volitional fatigue.

Globally, many researchers have been trying to improve the fuel economy of a vehicle for satisfying future CO 2 regulation and minimizing air pollution problem. For the same background, diesel engine and vehicle system optimization using simulation models have been key technologies for the improvement of vehicle system efficiency. Therefore, in this study, calibration method for the air breathing system of a WGT diesel engine using mean value model has been composed for efficient engine and vehicle optimization simulation researches. And virtual WGT performances have been calculated for a 2 cylinder downsized diesel engine system. From these researches, the calibration method for the boost pressure and EGR rate of a virtual diesel engine related with WGT performances could be composed and some of technical issue related with downsized diesel engine could be investigated. Exercise training causes epigenetic changes in skeletal muscle, although it is unclear how resistance exercise (RE) affects histone modifications. The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of acute RE and RE training on gene expression profiles and histone modifications in human skeletal muscle. Healthy male adults were assigned to acute RE (n = 9, age = 20.5±4.3yr, BMI = 28.0±6.8kg/m2) or RE training (n = 21, age = 23.7±2.5yr, BMI = 24.2±2.7kg/m2) groups. Biopsy samples were obtained from the vastus lateralis muscle before and three hours after a single bout of acute RE, or 3-days after 10 weeks of RE training. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that 153 genes with GO terms including muscle development, stress response, metabolism, cell death, and transcription factor were significantly up-regulated (+291% vs. pre-acute RE) upon acute RE. Objective Environmental and maternal exercise experienced even during the very earliest stages of life has the potential to cause developmental changes.The growing evidence demonstrated that diverse environmental stressors affect offspring in variousaspects in early stage of lifeand can be transmitted directly or indirectly by both parental lines.The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of across generations maternal exercise training under the hypoxic environment on mitochondrial biogenesis and angiogenesis related protein expressions of skeletal muscle in offspring ofmultiple generations. Methods The experimental groups were divided into four groups as NCON (control in normoxia), NEXE (exercise in normoxia), HCON (control under hypoxia), HEXE (exercise under hypoxia), and studied for three generations. Exercise groups were run on animal treadmill at 60%-75% VO2maxfor one hour per day, five times per week for 10 weeks (seven weeks before conception and during conception for three weeks). Animals were sacrificed at a given time table and assayed mitochondrial biogenesis and angiogenesis related protein expressions using western blotting. Results The major findings from the present study were firstly, maternal exercise training before and during conception under hypoxic environment increase in mitochondrial biogenesis and angiogenesis related proteins expressions in both maternal and offspring skeletal muscles, secondly, long term of exposure to hypoxic environment without exercise training increase in mitochondrial biogenesis and angiogenesis related proteins expressions in offspring skeletal muscles, and further increased when exercise training performed at hypoxic environment, lastly, there was no cumulative benefit by consecutively exposure for three generations under hypoxic environment, which is indicating world winning runners from high altitude dwellers may not relay on the duration of sojourn under hypoxic environment, but rather selection and training related factors. Conclusions In summary, maternal exercise training before and during conception under hypoxic environment increase in mitochondrial biogenesis(PGC-1α, COX-Ⅳ, NRF-1, mtTFA) and angiogenesis(HIF-1α, VEGFtotal) related proteins expressions in both maternal and offspring skeletal muscles, especially exercise training stimulated the protein expressions under hypoxic environment than normoxic condition. Therefore, exercise capacity may be endowed by both hypoxic environment and exercise training at hypoxic environment.

Insulin was precipitated from solution in dimethylsulfoxide using supercritical carbon dioxide as an antisolvent. Solution enhanced dispersion by supercritical fluids (SEDS) process was applied to produce nano‐size insulin particles. We used dimethylsulfoxide to help the supercritical carbon dioxide to extract water from the aqueous protein solution. Various sizes of insulin nano‐particles were successfully prepared with a narrow particle size distribution from aqueous dimethylsulfoxide solution without using any additive. The theoretical particle sizes were deduced from the calculated droplet sizes based on a modified Jasuja's equation. The calculated mean particle sizes and the experimentally obtained ones were compared and the results showed an excellent correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9738.

The use of supercritical fluids for the analytical extraction of the nonvolatile, higher molecular weight compound, microcystin LR, from cyanobacteria was investigated. The microcystin LR included in this study was sparingly soluble in neat supercritical fluid CO2. However, the microcystin LR was successfully extracted with a ternary mixture (90% CO2, 9.5% acetonitrile, 0.5% water) at 40°C and 250 atm. The polar carbon dioxide‐aqueous acetonitrile fluid system gave a high extraction efficiency for the extraction of the polar microcystin LR from cyanobacteria. In our laboratory, in the past, aqueous acetic acid‐modified CO2 was used for the extraction of microcystins from cyanobacteria and aqueous methanol was also used as a modifier. In this study, we tried a new organic solvent, aqueous acetonitrile as a co‐solvent, so that we could obtain a higher extraction efficiency of the microcystin LR from cyanobacteria than in earlier experiments.

New monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against microcystin (MC), a cyclic peptide toxin of the freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa, were prepared from cloned hybridoma cell lines. Using these mAbs, an immunochromatographic assay system was designed for the detection of cyanobacterial hepatotoxins, MCs in water. The immunochromatographic assay system is composed of anti‐MCs‐mAb, fluorescence conjugates in detection solution, an immunochromatographic assay strip, and a laser fluorescence scanner. The performance of the immunochromatographic assay system was compared with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) detection. As the detection limit of HPLC is several orders of magnitude higher than with immunochromatographic assay systems, attention was also given to preconcentration of samples with solid phase extraction cartridges.

The use of compressed (dense) gases and supercritical fluids as chromatographic mobile phases in conjunction with liquid chromatographic (LC)-type packed columns was first reported by Klesper et al. in 1962. During its relatively short history, supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has become an attractive alternative to GC and LC in certain industrially important applications. SFC gives the advantage of high efficiency and allows the analysis of nonvolatile or thermally labile mixtures. The density of the mobile phase in SFC is about 200-500 times that in gas chromatography. The effect of shorter intermolecular distances and the resulting increase in molecular interactions is an enhanced solubilizing capability of the solvent towards various solutes. Compounds with much higher molecular weights than gas chromatography normally allows can therefore be chromatographed. However, the most commonly used mobile phases in SFC are all relatively non-polar fluids. Carbon dioxide, the most widely used fluid, is no more polar than hexane, even at high densities. Solute polarity should be between that of the stationary phase and the mobile phase in order to have a well behaved separation. Few real samples contain only nonpolar solutes, so a major objective of research in SFC has been directed toward increasing the range of solute polarity that can be handled by the technique. To bring the SFC technique into routine use, mobile phases that are more polar than the commonly used carbon dioxide are necessary. The solvent strength of supercritical CO2, even at high density, is not sufficient for the elution of polar solutes. Polar mobile phase such as NH3 exhibit useful properties, but a more practical way to extend the range of compounds separable by SFC is to use a mixed mobile phase. The solubility of the solute in the supercritical phase can be influenced considerably by adding modifiers to the mobile phase. The use of modifiers has been reported by Jentoft and Gouw and by Novotny et al. The latter group showed that adding 0.1% 2-propanol to pentane as the mobile phase decreases the observed partition coefficient (K) values for many polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons by 20-35%. Thus, the addition of modifiers (generally organic solvents) to a supercritical mobile phase changes the polarity of the mobile phase and also leads to deactivation of the column packing material. In capillary SFC, most separations are made with pure CO2 because of its compatibility with an flame ionization detection (FID); except for formic acid and water, the addition of any common modifier precludes the use of FID. Modifiers are essential in packed-column SFC for the elution of polar compounds and are extensively used. Several workers have reported the influence of modifiers on peak shape, selectivity and retention time in capillary and packed-column SFC. A simple and effective way to add modifiers to a supercritical fluid mobile phase is to use a saturator column, which is usually a silica column saturated with polar alcohols. In this work, water was used as a polar modifier and a μporasil column as a saturator column. The μ-porasil column was inserted between the pump outlet and the injection valve. During the passage of the supercritical fluid mobile phase through the silica column, a polar modifier (water) can be dissolved in the pressurized supercritical fluid. Dimethylpolysiloxane polymer has been known as more polar polymer than polystyrene polymer. Dimethylpolysiloxane polymer has never been separated using water modified mobile phase. In this paper, using a μ-porasil column as a saturator column, excellent supercritical fluid chromatograms of dimethylpolysiloxane oligomers were obtained.

Background Limited data are available examining dietary interventions for optimizing protein and leucine intake to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (MPS) in older humans. Objectives We aimed to investigate the aminoacidemia and appetite responses of older adults after consuming breakfast, a meal frequently consumed with high-carbohydrate and below-par amounts of protein and leucine for stimulating MPS. Methods Five men and 3 women (means ± SD; age: 74 ± 7 y, BMI: 25.7 ± 4.9 kg/m2, fat- and bone-free mass: 63 ± 7 kg) took part in this experiment in which they consumed breakfasts with low-protein (LP = 13 ± 2 g), high-protein (HP = 32 ± 5 g), and LP followed by a protein- and leucine-enriched bar formulation 2 h later (LP + Bar = 29 ± 2 g). The LP, HP, and LP + Bar breakfast conditions contained 519 ± 86 kcal, 535 ± 83 kcal, and 739 ± 86 kcal, respectively. Blood samples were drawn for 6 h and analyzed for amino acid, insulin, and glucose concentrations. Visual analog scales were assessed for hunger, fullness, and desire to eat. Results The net AUC for essential amino acid (EAA) exposure was similar between the LP + Bar and HP conditions but greater in the HP condition compared with the LP condition. Peak leucinemia was higher in the LP + Bar condition compared with the HP, and both were greater than the LP condition. Net leucine exposure was similar between HP and LP + Bar, and both were greater than LP. Hunger was similarly reduced in LP + Bar and HP, and LP + Bar resulted in a greater hunger reduction than LP. Both LP + Bar and HP resulted in greater net fullness scores than LP. Conclusions Consuming our bar formulation increased blood leucine availability and net exposure to EAAs to a similar degree as consuming a high-protein meal. High-protein at breakfast results in a greater net exposure to EAAs and leucine, which could support MPS in older persons. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03712761., There are practical limitations for older persons to sufficiently increase daily protein intake. Dietary recommendations aimed to prevent or minimize sarcopenia may benefit from inclusion of supplementing with unique formulations containing milk proteins with free leucine.
