The paper reflects on methods of approaching the reconstruction of Roman funerary rituals. The analysis takes the cue from the enigmatic small ceramic pots frequently found in high imperial graves from Opitergium. To investigate their function, several aspects are weighted together: the gender and age of the deceased, the size of the containers, the frequency of double deposition, their location inside the tombs and the association with other grave goods. Then the essay moves on how material data returns a lot of useful information for a more precise definition of ritual gestures. Visible and invisible must be combined: the paper focuses at the end on the use of biochemical analysis to uncover the original organic contents and to reconstruct the food offerings and purification rites carried out at the burial.

Pulmonic stenosis is a frequent congenital heart disease in dogs, and the treatment of choice is balloon valvuloplasty which is usually safe and successful. The authors describe for the first time a severe complication after balloon valvuloplasty in a five-month-old dog. After effective treatment, with a considerable drop in right ventricular pressures, the dog developed hypoxemia and dyspnea due to pulmonary edema. The dog underwent intensive care and symptoms improved after a few hours of oxygen therapy, continuous positive airway pressure, and furosemide. Although this event is rare, it could have a large impact on patient survival and should be considered in the treatment of severe pulmonary valve stenosis in the future.

Background - In the last few years care for children with severe chronic conditions is a topic of increasing interest. Children with chronic illness often require a high complexity of care and a high level of coordination among health services. Objective - The primary aim of this study is the assessment of children with chronic disease and high complexity of care (children with medical complexity), discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Modena University-Hospital. The secondary aim is to assess the outcome of these patients. Methods - Patients with chronic diseases and high complexity of care (children with medical complexity), aged 0-6 months, and admitted to the NICU of Modena in the years 2009-2019 were recruited. Results - 59 subjects were included, of which 15 (25.4%) were born preterm, 11 (18.6%) suffered from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, 33 (56%) had genetic diseases or malformations. All patients were discharged home, except for one patient who was discharged to hospice. The average hospital length of stay was 116.0 ± 63.4 days. Follow-up visits showed that 25 cases (42.4%) remained unchanged, 18 (30.5%) improved and 16 (27.1%) died. Conclusion - This study allows an assessment of patients with early diagnosis of chronic disease with high complexity of care, showing that some of these patients could be eligible for palliative care. The management of children with medical complexity requires diagnostic-therapeutic programmes that focus on them and their families and connect hospital and territorial health services.

Introduction The ever-growing diffusion and consumption of herbal teas, due to their sensory attributes and well-known health benefits exposes them to the real risk of adulteration, especially in the case of commercial mixtures already minced for infusion. Therefore, novel and suitable tools for the control of these valuable products are increasingly required. Objectives This work provides new insights for the authenticity study of infusions. The main objective was verifying the potential of proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR) combined with partial least square (PLS) regression to build highly predictive models, useful for the determination of the real amounts of herbs in mixtures, by the simple analysis of the related infusion. Materials and methods Peppermint, fennel, lemon balm, and passiflora were chosen to set-up an experimental plan according to a central composite design (CCD). One-dimensional nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (1D-NOESY) spectra were properly pretreated and then analysed by chemometrics to extract significant information from the raw data. Results Venetian-blind cross-validation and different chemometric indicators (RMSEC, RMSECV, RMSEP, R2 CAL , R2 CV, R2 PRED ) were used to establish the best model, which include four factors explaining 88.70 and 83.77% of the total variance in X and Y, respectively. Conclusions These promising results have laid the basis for further development of the method, to extend its applicability and make it more scalable. This tool could replace expensive separative techniques and protect the rights of consumers with particular attention to safety issues and quality assurance.

[ES] Introducción: la apnea obstructiva del sueño (AOS) es un trastorno respiratorio relacionado con el sueño, que determina graves secuelas en la salud de las personas afectadas. El estándar de oro para diagnosticar la AOS es la polisomnografía, que sin embargo es cara, requiere mucho tiempo, es difícil de realizar y no siempre está disponible. Por tanto, la AOS está infradiagnosticada y, dada la gravedad de sus consecuencias, representa una carga importante para el sistema sanitario. Para resolver este problema se necesitan métodos de cribado fáciles de realizar para identificar a los sujetos con alto riesgo de padecer AOS. Los dentistas se encuentran en una posición especialmente favorable para llevar a cabo estas pruebas iniciales. Objetivo: Revisar los datos bibliográficos disponibles para identificar los mejores métodos de cribado para detectar posibles pacientes con AOS durante la práctica clínica dental, tanto en adultos como en niños. Métodos: Se buscaron estudios relevantes publicados hasta abril de 2021 en las bases de datos PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane y LILACS. Resultados: Se seleccionaron 93 estudios, 52 para adultos y 41 para niños. Los métodos de cribado disponibles para el dentista incluían cuestionarios, oximetría de pulso, análisis de las vías respiratorias superiores y factores anatómicos. Algunos de ellos resultaron ser herramientas adecuadas para determinados fines específicos, pero ninguno de ellos presentaba todas las características necesarias para ser considerado un buen método de cribado de la AOS por sí solo. Por lo tanto, es necesario combinar varios de ellos para lograr una precisión suficiente en la detección de la AOS. Esto está respaldado por algunos de los estudios revisados, pero se necesitan más investigaciones. Los odontólogos tienen un papel fundamental en la detección precoz de posibles pacientes con AOS, ya que pueden utilizar los métodos descritos en esta revisión para realizar un cribado inicial de la población y dirigir a los sujetos identificados a los médicos del sueño.

Aphanizomenon flos-Aquae (AFA) cyanobacteria from Klamath Lake (Oregon) are considered a "superfood" due to their broad nutritional profile that has proved to have health-enhancing properties. The AFA metabolome is quite complex. Here, we present a study that, combining multinuclear 1H, 31P, and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry, led to the detection of uncommon phosphorylated metabolites in AFA. We focused our attention on 31P NMR signals at 20 ppm, a chemical shift that usually points to the presence of phosphonates. The molecules contributing to 20 ppm 31P NMR signals revealed, instead, to be nucleoside 2′,3′-cyclic monophosphates. These metabolites were fully characterized by multinuclear 1H, 31P, and 13C NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Essential oils (EOs) are valuable products commonly employed in the food industry and intensively studied as biopreservatives for the extension of food shelf-life. Unfortunately, EOs might be counterfeit to increase industrial profits. Among the possible adulterants, vegetable oils (VOs) must be considered for their characteristics and low costs. We aimed to apply nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for the detection and identification of VOs in mixtures with EOs. This innovative strategy is based on comparing the peak area ratio matrices of characteristic VO 13C NMR fatty acid signals with those of adulterated EOs. The identification of the VOs was achieved by calculating the matrix similarity at different confidence levels. The strategy demonstrated the capacity to efficiently recognize the presence of adulteration and the type of VO adulterant in mixtures. Thus, the method was applied to 20 commercial EOs, and VOs were detected and then identified in four samples.

To review the available bibliographic data to identify the best screening methods to detect potential obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients during dental clinical practice.Relevant studies published up to April 2020 were sourced from PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and LILACS databases.Thirty studies were selected. For adults, the screening methods available to the dentist included questionnaires, scales, indexes, pulse oximetry, and anatomical factors. A combination of questionnaires is potentially the most reliable method to detect OSA risk. For children, only information on questionnaires and anatomical factors was found; two questionnaires accurately identified potential OSA risk cases. Understanding patient choice is vital in assessing the closeness of competition between hospitals. The standard technique used in the UK is to estimate substitution patterns based on historical general practitioner (GP) referrals. In this paper we compare the results of the ‘GP referral’ methodology to a demand estimation approach. Using patient-level data over a 3-year period (2012/13–2014/15) we apply both methodologies to every hypothetical merger between hospitals in England, for three specialties. We find a high degree of consistency between the two approaches, suggesting that GP referral analysis is a useful and reliable filter in merger cases. There are a small number of cases, however, in which the GP referral approach filters out potentially problematic mergers. This is particularly true for ‘borderline’ cases. Filtering should therefore be done with caution and in conjunction with additional evidence.

This study summarizes the results obtained from a systematic and long-term project aimed at the development of tools to assess the provenance of food in the oenological sector. In particular, 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios were measured on statistically representative set of soils, vine branches and wines sampled in the production district of Modena, worldwide known for the Lambrusco wines production. The obtained data were used to build strontium isotopic maps able to objectively support the Lambrusco PDO wines origin as well as other products of the Modena district. Finally, a strong relationship was found between the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of soils and vine branches on a large scale, highlighting and confirming once more the idea that plants can also represent an optimal sampling device to support geographical traceability.

Using the framework of Community Benefit Tourism Initiatives, this study investigates the local actors’ and the foreign organizations’ perspective on responsible tourism, the processes of planning and developing tourism initiatives, their implementation and the effects on the local communities. The empirical part concerns a case study about an initiative originated from a cultural development project by an Italian D-NGO and developed through the collaboration with an Italian tour operator. The findings suggest that, even in the case where such initiatives aren’t strategically planned and start with a limited participation of local actors, they can lead to important benefits for the local communities. The findings also suggest that these types of initiatives can constitute a solid basis for future developments with an increasing active participation by the local actors.

The role of noncovalent interactions in the adsorption of biological molecules on graphene is a subject of fundamental interest regarding the use of graphene as a material for sensing and drug delivery. The adsorption of dopamine on regular graphene and graphene with monovacancies (GV) is theoretically studied within the framework of density functional theory. Several adsorption modes are considered, and notably those in which the dopamine molecule is oriented parallel or quasi-parallel to the surface are the more stable. The adsorption of dopamine on graphene implies an attractive interaction of a dispersive nature that competes with Pauli repulsion between the occupied π orbitals of the dopamine ring and the π orbitals of graphene. If dopamine adsorbs at the monovacancy in the A–B stacking mode, a hydrogen bond is produced between one of the dopamine hydroxy groups and one carbon atom around the vacancy. Tamara Kamenszain (b. 1947, Buenos Aires) is one of Argentina’s leading poets and essayists. This article concentrates on two poetry collections, Solos y solas (2005) and El eco de mi madre (2010) and traces the thematic ‘spirals’ which develop in and across the poems, building a ‘story-telling nucleus’. It explores Kamenszain’s interest in stretching and stripping words until they touch upon and capture ‘the real’, beyond metaphorical readings and implications. This leads to a close study of Kamenszain’s use of language, in particular, her use of colloquialisms and rhythms encoded in Argentine speech, especially porteño (from Buenos Aires). In the final section I turn to the process of translating her poetry by drawing a parallel with truco, the most typically Argentine card game, where (as reader/ player/ translator) one is aware of the ‘tricks’ involved – from word game/ play, pun, allusion, to dialogues with other poets and even tango steps – but chooses to conceal, rather than reveal so as not to ‘give the game away’. Through this process the translator remains true to the particular neobarroque nature of Kamenszain’s poetry, where ‘neobarroque’ is characterized by its suggestiveness, allusive power and tendency towards elision.

Peri-implantitis is a steadily rising disease and is caused by oral bacterial pathogens able to form biofilm on implant surfaces and peri-implant tissues, making antibiotics treatment less effective. The use of commercial probiotics against oral pathogens could serve as an alternative to prevent biofilm formation. Streptococcus intermedius is one of the early colonizers of biofilm formation in dental implants. The aim of this study was to model the interaction between S. intermedius and Streptococcus salivarius strain K12, a probiotic bacterium producing bacteriocins. S. intermedius was co-cultured with S. salivarius K12 in an in vitro model simulating the biofilm formation in a dental implant composed by a titanium cylinder system. Biofilm formation rate was assessed by Real-Time PCR quantification of bacterial count and expression levels of luxS gene, used in response to cell density in the biofilm. Biofilm formation, bacteriocin production, luxS expression patterns were found to be already expressed within the first 12 h. More importantly, S. salivarius K12 was able to counter the biofilm formation in a titanium cylinder under the tested condition. In conclusion, our dental implant model may be useful for exploring probiotic-pathogen interaction to find an alternative to antibiotics for peri-implantitis treatment.

Objective: Group B streptococcus (GBS) early-onset sepsis (EOS) has declined after widespread intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. However, strategies for preventing EOS may differ across countries. The analysis of their strategies allows to compare the effectiveness of prevention in different countries and suggests opportunities for improvement. Methods: We compared six western countries. Prevention strategies, incidence rates of EOS and approaches for managing neonates at-risk were analysed. Countries were selected because of availability of recommendations for prevention and sufficient epidemiological data for comparison. Results: Five of six countries recommend antenatal vagino-rectal screening. The decline of GBS cases is relevant in most countries, particularly in those with a screening-based strategy, which have reached incidence rates from 0.1 to 0.3/1000 live births and zero or close to zero mortality in full-term newborns. The recommendation for managing asymptomatic neonates at risk for EOS varies according to gestational age and ranges from observation only to laboratory testing plus empirical antibiotics. Chorioamnionitis (suspected or confirmed) is the main indication for carry out laboratory testing and for administering empirical antibiotics. Conclusions: Wide variations exists in preventing EOS. They depend on national epidemiology of GBS infections, compliance, cost, and feasibility of the strategy. The extreme variability of approaches for managing neonates at risk for EOS reflects the even greater uncertainty regarding this issue, and may explain the persisting, great use of resources to prevent a disease that has become very rare nowadays.

The interaction between a single atom and graphene is an example in which the density functional theory (DFT) presents serious difficulties in giving an appropriate description of the adsorbate-substrate interaction, giving also different predictions according to the chosen approximation. The present calculations sustain that the inclusion of dispersion interactions in the framework of DFT for the Al/graphene system lead to potential energy curves of different nature according to the theoretical approach employed. The adsorption of an Al atom on the graphene surface was studied using both cluster and slab models. Cluster DFT-PBE calculations show the presence of a minimum at hollow site at an Al-graphene distance of about 2.1-2.3 Å corresponding to an exothermic state. Conversely, under B3LYP the same adsorption mode is endothermic. In comparison, our MP2 reference calculations predict the formation of two minima, both of exothermic nature, separated by an important energy barrier (about 0.2-0.4eV). The incorporation of empirical van der Walls (vdW) corrections to B3LYP changes the original behavior, giving an exothermic adsorption; furthermore, it produces a second, more external minimum. Slab calculations with PBE, and specially using the vdW-DF2 functional, predict also the formation of a minimum of very low depth at about 3.1 Å. The analysis of results obtained with cluster and slab models sustains that the bonding of the inner minima is of ionic character while that of the external ones is of dispersion character. Background In our Center, the cell viability, the integrity of the bag, and the clonogenic assay were evaluated before the reinfusion of hematopoietic progenitor cells–apheresis (HPC-A). This quality control (QC) should be made 14 days before the reinfusion to the patient to have the result of the functional test on the proliferative capacity of hematopoietic progenitors. Study Design and Methods This study was designed to assess the potential of an automatic cell counting system (NucleoCounter NC-3000, ChemoMetec) in our clinical routine as a support of the clonogenic assay and the cytofluorimetric analysis for the QC of the cryopreserved HPC-A. The cell viability was evaluated by flow cytometry using the modified International Society of Hematotherapy and Graft Engineering protocol. The proliferative potential was assessed by specific clonogenic tests using a commercial medium. Furthermore, we evaluated the cellular functionality with NucleoCounter NC-3000, by using two protocols: “vitality assay” and “mitochondrial potential assay.” Results The evaluation of the total nucleated cells in preapoptosis measured by 5,5,6,6-tetrachloro-1,1,3,3-tetraethylbenzimidazol-carbocyanine iodide (JC-1) assay showed a negative correlation (r = −0.43) with the total number of colonies (colony-forming unit [CFU]–granulocyte-macrophage progenitors plus burst-forming unit–erythroid progenitors plus CFU–granulocyte, erythroid, macrophage, megakaryocyte progenitors) obtained after seeding of 50 × 106/L viable total nucleated cells. INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of maternal group-B-streptococcus (GBS) colonization and risk factors (RFs) for neonatal early-onset disease (EOD) in Europe are poorly defined. Large-scale information concerning adherence to recommendations for preventing GBS-EOD are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a 3-month retrospective area-based study including all regional deliveries ≥35 weeks' gestation (in 2012). The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, odds ratio and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) among full-term and preterm deliveries and prolonged membrane rupture (PROM) were calculated. RESULTS: Among 7133 women, 259 (3.6%) were preterm (35-36 weeks' gestation). Full-term women were 6874, and 876 (12.7%) had at least 1 RF. Most women (6495) had prenatal screening and 21.4% (1390) were GBS positive. IAP was given to 2369 (33.2%) women (preterm, n = 166; full term, n = 2203). Background Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the deadliest malignant primary brain tumor in adults. GBM develops primarily in the cerebral hemispheres but can develop in other parts of the central nervous system. Its congenital variant is a very rare disease with few cases described in literature. Case presentation We describe the case of a patient with congenital GBM who developed eruptive disseminated Spitz nevi (EDSN) after chemotherapy. Few cases of EDSN have been described in literature and this rare clinical variant, which occurs predominantly in adults, is characterized by multiple Spitz nevi in the trunk, buttocks, elbows and knees. There is no satisfactory treatment for EDSN and the best therapeutic choice is considered the clinical observation of melanocytic lesions. Conclusion We recommend a close follow-up of these patients with clinical observation, dermoscopy and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM). However, we suggest a surgical excision of the lesions suspected of being malignant.

Nearly half of very preterm (VP) and extremely preterm (EP) infants suffers from minor disabilities. The paper overviews the literature dealing with motor problems other than cerebral palsy (CP) during infancy and preschool age. The term "minor motor problems" indicates a wide spectrum of motor disorders other than CP; "minor" does not mean "minimal", as a relevant proportion of the preterm infants will develop academic and behavioural problems at school age. Early onset disorders consist of abnormal general movements (GMs), transient dystonia and postural instability; these conditions usually fade during the first months. They were underestimated in the past; recently, qualitative assessment of GMs using Prechtl's method has become a major item of the neurological examination. Late onset disorders include developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and/or minor neurological dysfunction (MND): both terms cover partly overlapping problems. Simple MND (MND-1) and complex MND (MND-2) can be identified and MND-2 gives a higher risk for learning and behavioural disorders. A relationship between the quality of GMs and MND in childhood has been recently described. The Touwen infant neurological examination (TINE) can reliably detect neurological signs of MND even in infancy. However, the prognostic value of these disorders requires further investigations.

γ/δ T cells represent a subset of T cells expressing a T cell receptor (TCR) variant composed of gamma and delta chains. The γ/δ TCR is expressed by 2-10% of all T cells in human peripheral blood, whereas the majority of T cells express α/β TCRsγ/δ T cells display a range of innate effector functions including rapid secretion of chemokines and cytokines, as well as target cell lysis. Recent interest has focused on the function of γ/δ T lymphocytes in allogeneic transplantation in the onco-hematology field. Several studies, in vitro and in vivo, suggest that γ/δ T lymphocytes are potential beneficial effector cells in the context of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In addition, in this review, we discuss the depletion of α/β T lymphocytes in the graft for allogeneic transplantation. In fact, an efficient TCR α/β cell depletion potentially reduces the risk of GvHD. Furthermore, TCR α/β T cell depletion, especially with immunomagnetic negative selection, retains other potential beneficial effector cells in the graft, such as γ/δ T cells, NK cells, and stem cells. These " facilitating" cells might facilitate engraftment, exert GvL effects, and reduce the risk for infections. © 2011 Elsevier GmbH.

To determine factors influencing intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) failure in the prevention of group B streptococcus (GBS) early-onset disease (EOD).GBS EOD case is defined as isolation of GBS from a normally sterile body site (e.g. blood or cerebrospinal fluid) in infants aged ≤7 days. During a consecutive 93-month period, GBS EOD cases and care data were reviewed.Seventy-nine GBS EOD cases were registered; 67 infants were born to women who received no i.v. antibiotics during labor. The 12 EOD cases exposed to IAP were more likely to be associated with emergency caesarean section (p = 0.0015), maternal obstetric risk factors (ORFs) (p = 0.0061), particularly intrapartum fever (p = 0.0002), and to present with signs of illness at birth (p = 0.0015). Correct dosages, agents, and timing were registered in three cases only; of which two were associated with intrapartum fever.ORFs, emergency caesarean section, and signs of illness at birth are significantly associated with GBS EOD in infants exposed to IAP. This study also suggests that recommended IAP agents, dosages, and timing are infrequently associated with EOD. Strict protocol adherence is recommended in all cases.

Current guidelines for prevention of group B streptococcus (GBS) early-onset infection recommend to administer antibiotic during labor at least 4 h prior to delivery (adequate prophylaxis). We aimed to determine if neonatal GBS colonization may be significantly decreased in case of inadequate (4 h) duration of ampicillin prophylaxis.In prospective, cohort study, 167 infants born to 167 GBS culture-positive mothers without additional risk factors were enrolled. Cultures were collected both, at 10-24 h after birth (admission) and at discharge.Among 137 infants born to mothers who received inadequate prophylaxis, 5 (3.6%, C.I. = 0.5-6.8) were colonized (≥1 sites) at admission, at discharge, or both, at admission and discharge. Eighty-two women received prophylaxis 2 h before delivery and two infants (2.4%) were colonized at discharge. Eighteen (60.0%, C.I. = 42.5-77.5) of 30 infants who were not exposed to prophylaxis were colonized at admission or both, at admission and discharge. Colonization was significantly more frequent among infants born to untreated mothers with respect to infants born to women who received inadequate prophylaxis (either 2 or 4 h).In this selected group, inadequate prophylaxis significantly interrupted vertical colonization. This effect was evident even if prophylaxis started 2 h before delivery.

Summary Propolis has various biological activities closely related to the composition which varies according to environmental factors and also to the method of production. This study was aimed at determining whether or not HR-NMR and multivariate statistical analysis were able to classify propolis according to the method used to harvest it. Sixty propolis samples were analysed in all. The ethanolic propolis extracts were initially analysed for quantification of the main bioactive substances, balsams and waxes. The 1H NMR and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation spectra were then acquired. Spectral data were analysed by the application of multivariate statistical techniques (Factor Analysis and General Discriminant Analysis). The best results were obtained using the 1H NMR which furnishes a sufficiently effective model by analysing the spectral region between 4.50 and 13.00 ppm (predictive capacity: 96.7%).

The NMR study on the interaction of Pt(II) with Amadori compounds is performed. The Amadori compounds are derived from the reaction of β- d -glucose with l -cystine leading to N,N′-di-(1-deoxy-β-fructos-1-yl)- l -cystine [FruCyscys], and with l -methionine leading to N-(1-deoxy-β-fructos-1-yl)- l -methionine [FruMet]. The great instability of 2-(1,2,3,4,5-pentahydroxypentyl)-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid [GlcCys], formed by the condensation reaction of β- d -glucose and l -cysteine, prevents the formation of its Pt(II) complexes. Differently, FruMet well reacts with K2PtCl4 in 1:1 M/L molar ratio leading to the formation of [Pt(FruMet-N,S)Cl2], in which the Amadori compound coordinates the metal ion through nitrogen and sulphur atoms. FruMet originates also a solid trans complex [Pt(FruMet-N,S)2]Cl2. Its NMR solution study allowed to identify two isomers with respect to nitrogen and sulphur atoms: R,R and S,S. In [Pt2FruCyscysCl4] species, FruCyscys molecule links two Pt(II) ions giving rise to two pentaatomic N,S-chelate rings.

Few studies focus on the neuropsychological and behavioural outcomes of preterm children at preschool age. This article reviews the most recent and relevant contributions on cognitive, neuropsychological and behavioural outcomes, and the neuroradiological findings in extremely and very preterm infants. In the first 2 years of life, cognitive impairment is common: it has an incidence of 30-40% and a higher prevalence than neuromotor and neurosensorial impairments. Recent studies report that even preterm infants with no major disabilities at preschool age perform more poorly than term peers in multiple neuropsychological domains, such as language, attention, memory, visuomotor and visuospatial processing and executive functions. The incidence and severity of problems increase with decreasing gestational age. A delayed acquisition of neuropsychological functions and/or the occurrence of behavioural problems at preschool age are likely to be predictive of the high rate of cognitive deficits at school age and in adolescence. Neuropsychological functions across multiple developmental domains should be assessed longitudinally during routine follow-up checks.

This paper reports the use of liquid chromatography for the separation and determination of the major cannabinoids extracted from hashish samples. The direct coupling to the mass spectrometer enables the selective identification both of neutral and acidic cannabinoids. The developed method does not require any preliminary derivatization and should, therefore, be of interest in forensic analysis for simple and unequivocal determination of hashish constituents.

Thirty-four @2-R1C2R2)Co2(C0)6 complexes (14 new) were prepared and characterized by their IR v(C0) and lH- and 13C-NMR spectra. The 13C-NMR chemical shifts of the coordinated sp carbon atoms were correlated with those of the corresponding free acetylenes. This indicated that the interaction between the R1 and R2 groups and the c2co2(co)6 moiety is very sensitive not only to the donor/acceptor character of R1 and R2 but also to the orbital symmetry of the atoms attached directly to the C(sp) atoms. The changes of the W3C) values of the C(sp) atoms upon coordination were also analyzed in these terms. It is concluded that although the dinuclear p2-coordination of the acetylene results in a high degree of excitation the stability of the c2co2(co)6 moiety diminished the reactivity of the organic ligand. Differences in the reactivity of the @2-R1C2R2)Co2(CO)6 complexes in carbonylation are also discussed. The crystal and molecular structure of (PhC2SiPhs)Coz(CO)a was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pbca space group with a = 28.790(2) A, b = 11.577(1) A, c = 17.833(2) A, 2 = 8. The structure was determined with R = 0.039, R, = 0.036.

Background Immunomagnetic cell selection (ICS) cells is increasingly used in allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation in order to reduce the T cells quantity. The aim of this study was to evaluate an protocol based on Ficoll method before ICS. Study design and methods The automated procedure was compared with the standard method. In the group 1 the cell processing involves the extraction of the buffy-coat by Ficoll before incubation with antibodies. This procedure was performed with the Sepax S-100 device. The efficacy of this automated procedure was compared with the group 2. In this group, the cell washing and the incubation were performed through the standard method. The CD34+ cells collected by apheresis (HPC-A) were selected with ICS. Results The results obtained after Ficoll procedure, showed a total nucleated cells (TNCs) and CD34+ cells recovery of 85.73% (75.90–90.63; SD 4.25) and 79.31% (51.77–112.31; SD 18.40), respectively. The TNC and CD34+ cells recovery after the pre-incubation washing performed through the standard method, was 75.54% (38.36–97.76; SD 22.5) and 61.51% (30.87–81.79; SD 19.3), respectively. The CD34+ cells recovery after ICS was 79% (51.77–100; SD 18.40) and 44% (15.57–88.24; SD 25.91) in the group 1 and the group 2, respectively. This difference was statistically significant ( p =0.001). Conclusion The efficacy of the ICS which resulted to be higher in the group 1 compared to the group 2. Overall, our data suggest that the Ficoll procedure before incubation is suitable for the clinical routine in the ICS for haploidentical transplantation in patients affected by thalassemia.

Background aims. Immunomagnetic cell selection (ICS) of CD34 � cells is being used increasingly in allogeneic transplantation in order to reduce T-cell quantity. The aim of this study was to evaluate an automated washing protocol before immunomagnetic selection. Methods . The automated method was compared with a conventional washing procedure. In the study group the cell processing using the automated procedure, both before and after antibody incubation, was performed with a Sepax S-100 device. The effi cacy of the automated procedure was compared with the control group, where washing were performed using a standard method. Results . The results obtained after pre-incubation washing performed using the automated system showed a total nucleated cell (NC) and CD34 � cell recovery of 84.87% (71.80 – 105, SD 8.62; range, standard deviation) and 83.45% (47 – 109, SD 16.12), respectively. The NC and CD34 � cell recovery after the pre-incubation washing cycle was performed using the standard method was 75.54% (38.36 – 97.76, SD 22.5) and 61.51% (30.87 – 81.79, SD 19.3), respectively. The CD34 � cell recovery after ICS was 51.27% (13.77 – 98.82, SD 24.97) and 48.89% (15.57 – 88.24, SD 25.91) for group 1 and group 2, respectively. The average purity in group 1 was 86.46% (67.4 – 96.10, SD 13.07) and in group 2 84.97% (58.1 – 97.8, SD 15.58). Conclusions. The effi cacy of the ICS led to an optimal purity without affecting cell recovery, which was higher in group 1. Overall, our data suggest that the automated method is suitable for washing hematopoietic progenitor cell apheresis (HPC-A) concentrates before immunomagnetic cell selection in daily clinical routines.

In this study the investigation of the aroma compounds of dried fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth. and E. rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth. var. officinalis (Dode) Huang (i.e. E. officinalis Dode) (Rutaceae family) was carried out to identify the odorous target components responsible for the characteristic aroma of these valuable natural products. To avoid the traditional and more time-consuming hydrodistillation, the analyses were carried out by means of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The SPME headspace volatiles were collected using a divinylbenzene-carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane (DVB-CAR-PDMS) fiber. The extraction conditions were optimized using a response surface experimental design to analyze the effect of three factors: extraction temperature, equilibrium time and extraction time. The best response was obtained when the extraction temperature was around 80 degrees C, equilibrium time near 25 min and extraction time close to 18 min. Analyses were performed by GC-MS with a 5% diphenyl-95% dimethyl polysiloxane (30 m x 0.25 mm I.D., film thickness 0.25 microm) capillary column using He as the carrier gas and a programmed temperature run. The main components of the HS-SPME samples of E. rutaecarpa (concentration >3.0%) were limonene (33.79%), beta-elemene (10.78%), linalool (8.15%), myrcene (5.83%), valencene (4.73%), beta-caryophyllene (4.62%), linalyl acetate (4.13%) and alpha-terpineol (3.99%). As for E. officinalis, the major compounds were myrcene (32.79%), limonene (18.36%), beta-caryophyllene (9.92%), trans-beta-ocimene (6.04%), linalool (5.88%), beta-elemene (7.85%) and valencene (4.62%).

The terms "multicystic encephalomalacia" and "subcortical leucomalacia" (SCL) are used to describe the presence of areas of necrosis that develop into cystic lesions inside the brain. These lesions are generally due to severe asphyxia and/or hypotension. The designation SCL can also be used to describe the extent and the seat of the lesion in the brain or to distinguish subcortical lesions from periventricular and/or combined ones. In this study we give an account of our experience with eight newborns admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit, who presented clinical-neurological alterations and encephalomalacic lesions whose presence was documented by ultrasonography.

The present study was aimed at identifying the molecular profile characteristic of the healthy human gastric mucosa. Ex vivo HR-MAS magnetic resonance spectroscopy performed at 9.4 Tesla (400.13 MHz for (1)H) on gastric specimens collected during endoscopy, permits the identification of more than forty species giving a detailed picture of the biochemical pattern of the gastric tissues. These preliminary data will be used for a comparison with gastric preneoplastic and neoplastic situations. Moreover, the full knowledge of the biochemical pattern of the healthy gastric tissues is the necessary presupposition for the application of magnetic resonance spectroscopy directly in vivo.
