Abstract

Solid residue from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of nutrient rich feedstock presents a promising source to recover valuable nutrients, such as phosphorus, in the solid form. The present work shows for the first time the potential of utilizing the waste residue remaining after nutrients extraction from HTL of sewage sludge, as renewable adsorbents. A parametric study was undertaken to investigate the influence of chemical activation conditions (temperature, residence time, activation agent loading, washing after activation) on raw and partially demineralized HTL solids. Kinetic and equilibrium adsorption investigation was undertaken for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. For comparison purposes, a commercial activated charcoal (AC) was used. Demineralization was found to have a significant influence in the adsorption capacity of the resultant adsorbents. Three adsorbents were found to follow the Langmuir adsorption model, while the acid washed demineralized adsorbent had higher adsorption capacity than AC and was found to follow the Freundlich adsorption model. The superior performance of the acid washed demineralized adsorbent was verified from the kinetic study where all adsorbents were found to best fit the pseudo-second order model. Adsorption capacities for MB at equilibrium were 367.1, 332.3, 297.4 and 87.6 mg/g, for acid washed demineralized adsorbent, AC, demineralized adsorbent, and raw adsorbent, respectively. Finally, the most promising adsorbents were assessed for their adsorption capacity to remove pharmaceuticals present in a real wastewater treatment effluent. Results indicated ultimate concentration for all targeted compounds below the detection limits for acid washed demineralized adsorbent, AC and demineralized adsorbent. Future implementation of HTL technology in wastewater treatment facilities, will not only provide an efficient way to valorize sewage sludge into bio-crude and nutrients, but can also enhance technology integration by providing the precursors for renewable adsorbents needed in tertiary treatment of wastewater.

Abstract

In October 2019 the central 28m telescope of the H.E.S.S. experiment has been upgraded with a new camera. The camera is based on the FlashCam design which has been developed in view of a possible future implementation in the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We report here on the results of the science verification program that has been performed after commissioning of the new camera, to show that the camera and software pipelines are working up to expectations., Comment: Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract

The clinical value of imaging is well established for the follow-up of many lymphoid malignancies but not for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). A meta-analysis was performed with the dataset of 3 German CLL Study Group phase 3 trials (CLL4, CLL5, and CLL8) that included 1372 patients receiving first-line therapy for CLL. Response as well as progression during follow-up was reassessed according to the National Cancer Institute Working Group1996 criteria. A total of 481 events were counted as progressive disease during treatment or follow-up. Of these, 372 progressions (77%) were detected by clinical symptoms or blood counts. Computed tomography (CT) scans or ultrasound were relevant in 44 and 29 cases (9% and 6%), respectively. The decision for relapse treatment was determined by CT scan or ultrasound results in only 2 of 176 patients (1%). CT scan results had an impact on the prognosis of patients in complete remission only after the administration of conventional chemotherapy but not after chemoimmunotherapy. In conclusion, physical examination and blood count remain the methods of choice for staging and clinical follow-up of patients with CLL as recommended by the International Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia 2008 guidelines. Abstract

The acute tumour lysis syndrome is a well recognised complication of chemotherapy for lymphoid malignancies. There are few reports, however, of this complication after corticosteroid therapy alone. We report a case of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who developed the biochemical picture of tumour lysis after two doses of hydrocortisone given prior to platelet transfusion. Prophylactic corticosteroids prior to blood product infusion should be reserved for patients who have experienced febrile or allergic reactions in the past and it is suggested that they should only be administered to patients with active lymphoid malignancies with due caution.

Abstract

Total body irradiation (TBI) is a highly emetogenic component of the majority of conditioning regimens in use for bone marrow transplantation. Conventional antiemetic therapy fails to control nausea and vomiting induced by single fraction TBI in as many as 50% of patients. In a double blind study of 20 patients undergoing marrow transplantation, a single 8 mg ondansetron dose was compared with placebo given immediately prior to TBI. Our routine premedication of phenobarbitone and corticosteroid was also administered to all patients. All patients had received high dose melphalan the previous evening. Only 1 of the 10 patients in the ondansetron group experienced an emetic event compared with 5 of the 10 in the comparison group (p = 0.029). No significant adverse events were observed. Ondansetron appears to have extremely useful antiemetic activity during single fraction low dose rate TBI.

Abstract

Hyflon-Ion® H is a short-side-chain perfluorosulphonic acid ionomer (PFSI) membrane that can be used as electrolyte in Proton Exchange Membranes Fuel Cells (PEM-FCs). This material consists of a hydrophobic poly(tetrafluoroethylene) backbone with perfluorovinyl ether short side chains terminated by sulphonic acid (-SO3H) groups and has a rather low equivalent weight (800 g(pol)/mol(-SO3H)). The water sorption isotherm at 35°C and up to 50% relative humidity, was measured for an extruded membrane through the use of a FTIR-ATR technique that has been already applied to the study of water transport in Nafion® 117. The technique can provide a deeper insight into the mechanism of water diffusion and absorption into PFSI membranes since it allows to differentiate among different classes of water molecules, based on the extent of their hydrogen bond interactions with the sulphonic groups, and also to monitor simultaneously the time evolution of the concentration of the different populations of water molecules. The calibration was performed by comparing sorption isotherm of water, collected in Hyflon-Ion® H at 35°C in a pressure decay apparatus, with the FTIR-ATR results obtained by measuring the change in time of the integrated absorbance of the peak, usually related to stretching of -OH groups, in the range from 3000 to 3800 cm-1. The water solubility isotherm was decomposed into the contributions of the different water populations based on the polymer spectra, taken at different relative humidities, by considering the large –OH stretching band as the sum of several Gaussian peaks. In particular, four different peaks, and thus four types of water molecules, were identified in the portion of IR spectrum of the polymer considered and their concentration was monitored as a function of time and activity. The experiments show that the first two species, at the lower wavenumbers, quickly reach their equilibrium value with increasing water content, while the species at the highest wavenumber appears only at high hydration levels and its concentration increases monotonously with activity. The results suggest that the water populations detected are characterized by a different degree of interaction with the acid –SO3H group. One observes water populations characterized by sorption isotherms with an early saturation, which show a behavior similar to an adsorption isotherm: the sorption of these molecules appears limited by the finite ability of sulphonic groups to coordinate water molecules, and therefore these families are clearly related to these hydrophilic sites. That supports the idea that the first water molecules entering the system react with sulphonic groups to produce hydronium ions, while the following ones substantially solvate with successive layers the SO3--H3O+ complexes and, consequently, have lower interaction energy with sulphonic groups and, consistently, appear in the FTIR spectra as peaks centred at higher wavenumbers. The FTIR-ATR technique allows to detect, also, the water molecules weakly bonded that show a more linear isotherm, likely associated to "free" water in the sample. In view of these experimental findings, a simulation diffusion/reaction model was proposed that considers the first three water populations as directly interacting with the sulphonic groups, through Langmuir type adsorption mechanism, and the fourth as physically absorbed, with parameters taken from Nafion® literature. The final agreement with the experimental data is indeed satisfactory and further supports the physical picture obtained from the FTIR-ATR experimental results.

Because of its excellent sky conditions, Namibia is home to ground-based observatories like the High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.), in operation since 2002. Located near the Gamsberg mountain, H.E.S.S. performs groundbreaking science by detecting very-high-energy gamma rays from astronomical objects. The fascinating stories behind many of them are featured regularly in the ���Source of the Month���, a blog-like format intended for the general public with more than 170 features to date. In addition to other online communication via social media, H.E.S.S. outreach activities have been covered locally, e.g. through ���open days��� and guided tours on the site itself. An overview of the H.E.S.S. outreach activities are presented in this contribution, along with discussions relating to the current landscape of astronomy outreach and education in Namibia. There has also been significant activity in the country in recent months, whereby astronomy is being used to further sustainable development via human capacity-building. Finally, as we take into account the future prospects of radio astronomy in the country, momentum for a wider range of astrophysics research is clearly building ��� this presents a great opportunity for the astronomy community to come together to capitalise on this movement and support astronomy outreach, with the overarching aim to advance sustainable development in Namibia., Published by SISSA, Trieste

Abstract

This work is aimed at investigating the capability of a fully predictive Computational Fluid Dynamics approach to reliably calculate the fluid dynamic and the separation performances of a lab-scale module based on inorganic membranes, for hydrogen purification. The simulations are based on the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a gas phase mixture on the three dimensional domain representing quite closely the module geometry. The tubular membrane is modelled as a selective layer, which allows the permeation of different components as a function of the transport mechanism and the driving force. The computational strategy is strictly evaluated by comparing the results with experimental data obtained through permeation experiments. The simulation predictions show fairly good agreement with the experiments and allow to recognize the critical local fluid dynamic features of the separation module.

Abstract

The permeation of helium, oxygen and nitrogen in perfluorosulphonic acid ionomeric (PFSI) membranes with short and long side chains, namely Aquivion® and Nafion® 117, was studied in the relative humidity range between 0 and 90%, and at temperatures between 35°C and 65°C. The presence of humidity enhances, up to a factor of 100, the gas permeability in the membranes, due to the permeation of gas molecules in the hydrophilic domains: the enhancement is rather pronounced for O2 and N2, and less marked for He permeability. The relative permeability increase, Pgas/Pgas,0, shows a complex dependence on the relative humidity, as the water content in the membrane is itself a non linear function of this parameter. The water volume fraction in the membrane at each activity was accurately estimated from measurements of vapor-induced swelling, which indicate that the partial molar volume of water is smaller than its pure liquid value, in both membranes at 35°C. When plotted against water volume fraction, the gas permeability increases exponentially in the range between 2% and 20%; the slope of the curve is higher for Nafion than for Aquivion, as it is reasonable due to their different microstructures. The ideal selectivity of the two membranes for He over N2, O2 over N2 and He over O2, decreases exponentially with increasing water content in the membrane, as is often observed in swollen polymeric membranes.
