Canine parvovirus type II (CPV-2) infection induces canine parvoviral enteritis (CPE), which in turn promotes sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Mortality in this disease is usually registered within 48–72 h post-hospitalization, the critical period of the illness. It has been recently described that the use of an immunomodulator, whose major component is monomeric ubiquitin (mUb) without the last two glycine residues (Ub∆GG), in pediatric human patients with sepsis augments survival. It is known that CXCR4 is the cell receptor of extracellular ubiquitin in humans. This work aimed to explore the effect of one immunomodulator (human Dialyzable Leukocyte Extract-hDLE) as a therapeutic auxiliary in puppies with sepsis and SIRS induced by CPE. We studied two groups of puppies with CPV-2 infection confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. The first group received conventional treatment (CT) and vehicle (V), while the second group received CT plus the immunomodulator (I). We assessed both groups' survival, clinical condition, number of erythrocytes, neutrophils, and lymphocytes during the hospitalization period. In addition, hematocrit, hemoglobin, plasma proteins and cortisol values, as well as norepinephrine/epinephrine and serotonin concentration were determined. Puppies treated with CT + I showed 81% survival, mild clinical signs, and a significant decrease in circulating neutrophils and lymphocytes in the critical period of the treatment. In contrast, the CT + V group presented a survival of 42%, severe clinical status, and no improvement of the parameters evaluated in the critical period of the disease. We determined in silico that human Ub∆GG can bind to dog CXCR4. In conclusion, the administration of a human immunomodulator (0.5 mg/day × 5 days) to puppies with CPE under six months of age reduces the severity of clinical signs, increases survival, and modulates inflammatory cell parameters. Further studies are necessary to take full advantage of these clinical findings, which might be mediated by the human Ub∆GG to canine CXCR4 interaction.

Objetivo: Evaluar la prescripción de metformina (contraindicación, dosificación, control efectos adversos) para el tratamiento de los pacientes diabéticos tipo 2 que acuden a una institución de salud de baja complejidad de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia). Diseño: Estudio descriptivo de fármacoepidemiología dirigido específicamente a la utilización de medicamentos, basado en los datos recogidos mediante revisión de historias clínicas de pacientes diabéticos tipo 2. Emplazamiento: Realizado en una institución de salud de Atención Primaria en la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). Participantes: 331 pacientes diabéticos tipo 2 mayores de 18 años inscritos al programa de atención de diabetes durante los años 2013 y 2014 y que tuvieron un mínimo 6 meses de control. Mediciones Principales: Prescripción adecuada de metformina basada en tres condiciones: 1) no existir contraindicación para el uso del fármaco, 2) prescripción de la dosis según la estimación de la tasa de filtración glomerular (TFG) y 3) prevención de aparición de efectos adversos gastrointestinales. Resultados: El 16,4 % (IC 95 %: 12,5 % - 21,1 %) de los paciente tenían alguna contraindicación para el empleo de metformina. En un 27,4 % (IC 95 %: 22,5 % - 32,9 %) se prescribió una dosis inadecuada para la filtración glomerular. En el 54,4 % (IC 95 %: 48,6 % - 60,1 %) de sujetos se prescribió de manera inadecuada el medicamento. Conclusiones: Aunque la metformina es el medicamento considerado como terapia inicial de primera línea para el manejo de los pacientes con diabetes tipo 2, en un alto porcentaje de pacientes se prescribe de forma inadecuada, se utiliza estando contraindicado y su dosificación no considera la TFG.

15th Symposium on Aquatic Microbial Ecology (SAME15), 3-8 September 2017, Zagreb, Croatia, Bacterial luminescence in bacteria is dependent on quorum sensing and is regulated by the luxCDAB operon. The expression of this operon genes can be inhibited by exposition to toxic substances such as heavy metals. Therefore, luminous bacteria have been used in aquatic ecosystem toxicity tests. In this study we determined the abundance and identity of luminescent bacteria from coastal waters of the Gulf of Nicoya (Costa Rica). We also evaluated the preliminary effect of heavy metals on luminescence intensity. Samples were collected from four sites of the gulf, filtered and cultured in marine agar. Total culturable heterotrophic and luminescent bacteria were determined by enumerating total colonies growing in daylight and dark conditions respectively. The luminescent strains were subjected to phenotypic and phylogenetic characterization, which included biochemical tests and multilocus sequences analysis using 16S rRNA, gyrB and pyrH genes. The effect of heavy metals on growth and luminescence was determined by the disk diffusion test. Culturable luminescent bacterial ranged from 0-10% of total heterotrophic bacteria and no significant differences between sites could be observed. The isolates belonged to the genera Photobacterium and Vibrio. We identified in toxicity tests, various strains with high luminescence and defined inhibition zone that showed potential as indicators for monitoring environmental toxicity

Orientador: Ennio Peres da Silva Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Mecânica Resumo: A busca por meios de geração de energia para atender às necessidades humanas com menores impactos sociais e ambientais é constante. A geração de energia elétrica por meio de fontes renováveis na forma distribuída, ou não centralizada, é um meio ou método de minimizar tais impactos. O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a viabilidade econômica, frente a tarifa de energia elétrica das concessionárias locais, da utilização de sistemas de geração solar em residências brasileiras situadas nas capitais dos estados, na capital federal, Brasília e na cidade de Campinas (SP). Diferentes situações de dimensionamento foram utilizadas para dois tipos de sistemas: um sistema fotovoltaico puro, para atender toda a necessidade energética da residência, incluindo o chuveiro elétrico, e um sistema solar híbrido, composto por aquecimento solar para atender a demanda por água quente no banho em conjunto com geração fotovoltaica para atender as necessidades em equipamentos elétricos. As situações de dimensionamento utilizadas foram três, onde em cada uma o sistema fotovoltaico foi projetado para uma determinada produção de energia. Os sistemas fotovoltaico e de aquecimento solar foram dimensionados com o auxílio dos softwares PVSyst e Dimensol, respectivamente. O custo total dos sistemas foi estimado a partir de pesquisa em lojas com endereço eletrônico na rede de computadores e de orçamentos fornecidos por empresas do ramo. Determinou-se o preço final da energia elétrica convencional para todas as cidades a partir da tarifa definida pela ANEEL, do valor médio do PIS efetivo cobrado pelas concessionárias e da alíquota de ICMS que os governos estaduais recolhem. Após realizados os cálculos, chegou-se ao resultado de que somente nas cidades de Macapá (AP) e Boa Vista (RR), devido principalmente ao baixo custo das tarifas de energia elétrica, o usuário não economizaria com a instalação dos sistemas. Porém, em cidades de elevada tarifa, como Belém (PA) e Belo Horizonte (MG), o usuário pagaria cerca de R$ 0,30 por quilowatt hora consumido a menos Abstract: The search for power generation means to meet human needs with lower social and environmental impacts is constant. The distributed generation of electricity by renewable energies is a method to minimize those impacts. The research aimed to analyze the economic viability against local electricity tariff of the use of solar power generation systems in Brazilian households located in the capitals of the states, in the federal capital, Brasilia, and in the city of Campinas (SP) Different sizing situations were used for two types of systems: a pure PV system to meet all the energy needs of the residence, including electric shower, and a hybrid solar system, consisting of solar heating to meet the demand for hot water in the bath together with photovoltaic generation to meet the needs in electrical equipment. Sizing situations used were three, where in each one the PV system is designed for a certain production of energy. The photovoltaic systems and solar heating were sized with the help of the softwares PVSyst and Dimensol, respectively. The total cost of the systems was estimated by a research in webstores and budgets provided by companies in the field. Was determined the final price of conventional electricity to all cities from the tariff set by ANEEL, the average value of the effective PIS charged by concessionaires and ICMS aliquot that state governments collect. After performing the calculations, came to the result that only the cities of Macapa (AP) and Boa Vista (RR), mainly due to the low cost of electricity tariffs, the user does not save due to the installation of the systems. In this paper I derive an equation relating the gravitational acceleration with the gravitational wavelength corresponding to the "gravitational energy" density at a point in space and with the speed of light, without using the gravitational constant of Newton (G), derive an equation of the Energy-Momentum of Einstein suppressing this constant, and further I set the foundations for new theory of gravity "Energy-Wave".
