Introduction: Improvements in treatment of myeloma have led to a significant increase in the median duration of survival Management of the disease often requires onerous and complex regimens involving multi-disciplinary support and treatment from a number of different modalities. This requires significant input of effort from both health care professionals and from patients and their carers. Methods: Ten patients, with myeloma and attending one of three hospitals, were recruited together with a lay carer. Participants were interviewed on three occasions over 14 months. A total of 47 interviews were generated. These data have been analysed using the constant comparative method of Grounded Theory. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were managed using NVIVO software. Results: Living with myeloma requires effort, planning and organisation and thus, is work. Participants also put effort into managing complications and side effects of myeloma and its treatment and into integrating them into how they live with myeloma. Living with myeloma requires organisational skills, physical and emotional effort and is undertaken by both patients and significant others. Conclusion: The constellation of activities that require toil and effort by those living with myeloma have been conceptualised as work as it takes effort to live day to day with myeloma. Understanding this notion is important for healthcare professionals in working with people with myeloma and other cancers. Understanding commonalities and differences between the kinds of work patients and healthcare professionals undertake may assist with working together with patients in their own work and thus enhancing supportive care.

Objective To review published literature on the equity of participation in colorectal cancer screening amongst different population subgroups, in addition to identifying factors identified as barriers and facilitators to equitable screening. Studies were included in the review if they included FOBT as at least one of the screening tests. Method Relevant published articles were identified through systematic electronic searches of selected databases and the examination of the bibliographies of retrieved articles. Studies of the association with colorectal cancer screening test participation, barriers to equitable participation in screening, and studies examining interventional actions to facilitate screening test participation were included. Data extraction and analysis was undertaken using an approach to the synthesis of qualitative and quantitative studies called Realist Review. Results Sixty-three articles were identified that met the inclusion criteria. SES status, ethnicity, age and gender have been found as predictors of colorectal cancer screening test participation. This review also found that the potential for equitable cancer screening test participation may be hindered by access barriers which vary amongst population sub-groups. Conclusion This review provides evidence of horizontal inequity in colorectal cancer screening test participation, but limited understanding of the mechanism by which it is sustained, and few evidence-based solutions.

Schools across the United States of America experience shortages of special education teachers and teachers’ aides. This shortage limits the number of children with disabilities who can receive empirically supported educational services, and increases the number of special education positions filled by personnel with limited or no formal training in pedagogy. A logical solution to reduce this shortage is to train more teachers. However, it is not always economically feasible to travel to or from rural areas for teacher training. Technological advancements can eliminate or decrease barriers for teachers to access training from instructors with relevant content expertise from a distance. Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of empirical research in the educational sciences specific to training teachers, aides, or staff using advanced telemedicine technology through the worldwide web. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of using behavioral skills training via telemedicine or in-vivo to teach undergraduate pre-service teachers to implement empirically supported components commonly used in special education and early intervention instructional contexts. In the current study, seven undergraduate students were trained to implement procedures commonly used with discrete trial teaching: (1) a multiple stimulus without replacement preference assessment, (2) setting up the instructional context, (3) antecedent instructional prompts, and (4) consequences for accurate and inaccurate responding. Results suggested that telemedicine training was as efficacious and efficient as in-vivo training. Five of the six participants who completed the maintenance phase of the study showed high levels of maintenance of the skills taught, and the skills generalized to a more complex teaching task regardless of the modality of instruction. Finally, participants reported high acceptability ratings across training modalities, but three out of the six participants who completed a post-completion questionnaire reported a preference for in-vivo instruction, while the other three participants did not have a preference.

This study was designed to examine the effects of pairing the empirically based intervention of self-management of attention with a physical activity (i.e., walking) component to improve on-task behavior. Participants were three secondary students receiving special education services for a behavioral disorder (e.g., Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and currently receiving counseling as a related service. The self-management program included two components: a behavior rating scale and a self-monitoring form. Physical activity was integrated at different levels; including no physical activity, physical activity alone, and physical activity combined with cognitive behavioral aimed counseling to teach the self-management program and instill self-regulations skills. The participant students’ on-task behavior was evaluated with a multiple-baseline design across participants. The research findings indicated that when engaged in physical activity alone, the participant students exhibited medium to large effect sizes in the increasing of their percentage of observed time on-task. Results also yielded large effect sizes in the increasing of their percentage of observed time on-task when physical activity was paired with the self-management program. Findings suggest that physical activity and self-management are effective interventions for increasing adolescent students diagnosed with ADHD’s observed time on task. However, results show that the most effective phase for all three students was pairing the physical activity intervention with the self-management program. These findings shed light on the importance of building self-regulation skills in students with behavioral disorders and the need to incorporate physical activity within students’ daily educational routine.

Currently, many universities require students to enroll in at least one multicultural class as part of their bachelor’s degree requirement. The purpose of the study is to understand students’ multicultural attitude, knowledge, and skills. In the study, the researcher developed and validated the Multicultural Student Competency Questionnaire (MSCQ). The instrument is based on Sue’s and colleagues (1992) Multiple Dimension of Cultural Competence model. 3-form planned missing design was employed in the data collection of the validation study. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate the MSCQ and evaluate the relationship between the three main constructs: attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Results from the study revealed students’ awareness and knowledge of their own culture exceed their awareness and knowledge of biases and others’ cultures. In the skills dimension, students scored relatively higher on the verbal and nonverbal helping styles compared to advocacy skills. The MSCQ provided a good measure for measuring undergraduate students’ multicultural competency. Future research direction includes using moral education lens in the teaching of multicultural core classes and understanding various factors that effect students’ multicultural skills.
