Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most common chronic inflammatory disease, affecting an estimated 100 million Europeans (1). Despite a substantial burden on individuals, society and health economies (2), AR remains under-diagnosed, under-estimated (in terms of severity), and under-treated (3). Although effective and safe treatments exist, patients wait too long to seek medical advice, often preferring to self-manage at drug stores and at the pharmacy (4).

Dans un article intitule « La photoarcheologie et les musees de demain», paru dans un numero recent de Museum (n° 145, vol. XXXVII, n° 1, 1985, p. 5–12), le Harvard Semitic Museum (HSM) avait attire l'attention des museologues sur le fait que les archives photographiques constituent une source d'information culturelle et scientifique quasiment inexploitee et sur l'extreme fragilite des messages transmis grâce a la lumiere, lesquels sont, a moins d'etre correctement proteges, condamnes a disparaitre a jamais. Le HSM se propose, dans le present article, de montrer comment les responsables des Archives du Roi Fahd (King Fahd Archives, designees ci-apres par le sigle KFA) ont entrepris d'unir les efforts de scientifiques, de techniciens et d'artistes du monde entier pour rechercher, sauvegarder des enregistrements sonores tres anciens, faire connaitre et apprecier des documents ainsi mis au jour.

Le Harvard Semitic Museum, fonde en 1889 « pour promouvoir une solide connaissance des langues et de l'histoire semitiques », a lance en 1983 un vaste projet s'etendant sur trois ans en vue de la sauvegarde des archives visuelles disperses concernant les monuments et la vie au Moyen-Orient. Place sous le patronage de S.M. Fahd Ibn-Aziz al-Saud, roi d'Arabie saoudite, le projet a pour but la sauvegarde des collections de photographies en danger, leur regroupement et leur reproduction comme documents d'archives mis a la disposition de la communaute internationale. Parmi les publications deja realisees se trouve une serie de douze affiches faites, a partir de photographies du XIXe siecle, sur l'initiative du Fonds international pour la promotion de la culture de l'Unesco. Dans le present article, le directeur du Harvard Semitic Museum explore ce monde fascinant que l'on redecouvre actuellement.

In Museum, No. 145 (Vol. XXXVII, No. 1, 1985, pp. 2–12), the Harvard Semitic Museum (HSM) focused attention on ‘photo-archaeology and tomorrow's museums,’ particularly in regard to the virtually untapped cultural and scientific usefulness of photo-documentation as well as to the dangerously vulnerable delicacy of these ‘messages-in-light’, which will vanish for ever if not properly preserved. In this article, the author describes how, through the King Fahd Archives (KFA), ‘phono-archaeological’ preservation efforts have now begun to link scholars, technicians and artists around the world, in an effort to find, preserve, share and appreciate freshly recovered sounds from long ago.

In 1983 the Harvard Semitic Museum (founded in 1889‘to promote sound knowledge of Semitic languages and history’) launched an extensive three-year project to save scattered visual records of the monuments and life of the Middle East. Placed under the patronage of His Majesty Fahd Ibn Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud, King of Saudi Arabia, the project is aimed at the safeguard of endangered photograph collections and their assemblage and copying as an archival record to be shared internationally. Among the publications already made is a collection of twelve posters based on nineteenth-century photographs sponsored by Unesco's International Fund for the Promotion of Culture. In this article the Harvard Semitic Museum's director explores this fascinating rediscovered world.
