Abstract

Dichloromethane is a widely used organic solvent. Occupational exposure to dichloromethane is frequent and can result in both acute and chronic toxicity, affecting mostly the central nervous system, directly or through its metabolite, carbon monoxide. The effects of dichloromethane on the peripheral nervous system are debated. Here we report the case of a 37-year-old woman who was accidentally exposed to dichloromethane. In the days following the incident she experienced bilateral hypoacusis. Hearing loss regressed after 25 days treatment with hyperbaric oxygen. This is the first report of sudden hearing loss after acute exposure to dichloromethane, suggesting a possible toxic effect of this solvent on the auditory system.

Abstract

Hydraena Kugelann represents the largest genus within the water beetle family Hydraenidae, and in particular within Hydraeninae, with about 900 species widely distributed all over the world and several hundreds not yet described. In a recent cladistic analysis, based on morphological characters, Hydraena s. l. was split into two subgenera: Hydraenopsis Janssens (Gondwanian) and Hydraena s. str. (Laurasian). Moreover, within Hydraena s. str., some derived and well-supported monophyletic clades were recognised, and defined as "lineages". Among them, the "Haenydra" lineage, previously considered by many authors as a valid genus/subgenus, includes 89 species distributed exclusively in western Palaearctic, from Portugal to Iran, but absent in North Africa. The main aim of the present paper is to provide a revision of the whole lineage, re-examining taxonomy, ecology, and biogeography of all known species. All species were therefore redescribed, also providing information about diagnostic characters, taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships, ecology and biogeography. A faunistic dataset, including all the known published, and many unpublished, localities for each species, with a series of detailed geographic maps for each species and species complex, was herein supplied. Finally, dichotomous keys are provided for identification of males of all the "Haenydra" species.

Abstract

Summary Early atheromatous lesions were studied in femoral-popliteal and coronary arteries from a group of subjects aged 50–80 years. Macroscopic quantitation revealed a highly significant difference in the extent of such lesions; the femoral-popliteal arteries showed considerably more early lesions than did the coronaries. Four macroscopic types of early lesions were distinguished, each of them showed a characteristic histologic and histochemical pattern. The development of “preathe-romatous” lipid accumulation were more clearly revealed in the lower limb arteries, whereas coronary arteries displayed a more confused picture. Histochemically the pattern of phospholipid and cholesterol deposition in early femoral-popliteal lesions is the same as in other regions of the arterial tree. The presence of still active and evoluting atherosclerotic lesions in the arteries of old subjects supports the concept of atherosclerosis as a process that is repeatedly “re-awakening” or reactivated during life. This conclusion appears particularly relevant to the femoral-popliteal arteries.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is a dominant cause of global death, and atherosclerosis is its pre-eminent precursor, which begins with the loss of endothelium integrity, increased permeability to atherogenic lipoproteins and other pathological phenomena which result in intima-media thickness increase. We describe the case of a 48-year-old woman affected by heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis episodes, periodically treated with oral fluconazole; while she did not use to take any drug for lower total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. After 20 months of therapy with Pravastatin 40 mg daily, we noted an evident regression of diffused intima-media thickness in all vascular districts probed by ultrasound technique. We claim the importance and efficacy of Pravastatin therapy at the full dosage to normalise the lipidemic profile and to slow down the atherosclerosis progression, as has just been demonstrated by a simple and safe diagnostic image technique.

Abstract

Mutant p53 is frequently detected in endometrial and ovarian carcinoma, but it is rare in cervical cancers. Previous reports focused on cervical squamous cell carcinoma, whereas cervical adenocarcinoma was given little attention. We searched for p53 gene mutations in 74 primary cervical adenocarcinomas with known human papillomavirus (HPV) status. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of p53 mutations and to investigate their possible role as an independent prognostic factor. We found mutations in 13.5% with a high rate of G:C --> A:T transitions as observed in endometrial adenocarcinoma. As p53 mutations are more frequently detected in malignancies of high grade, high stage, and large size, this molecular event seems to play a role in the progression rather than in the induction of cervical adenocarcinoma. In our series, patients with HPV-negative tumors and patients with mutated neoplasms, irrespective of HPV infection, had a shorter survival. Yet the absence of HPV infection and presence of p53 mutations are not independent risk factors for tumor-related death after adjustment for clinicopathological confounders. The only significant and independent predictors of survival are age of patient, stage of disease, tumor grade, and presence of lymph node metastases.

Abstract

This study provides a first step toward the knowledge of the alien-dominated and co-dominated plant communities present in Italy. The first ever checklist of the alien phytocoenoses described or reported in literature for the Italian territory has been compiled, produced by data-mining in national and local thematic literature. The resulting vegetation-type draft-list has been checked in the light of the most recent syntaxonomic documentation and updated with regards to syntaxonomy and nomenclature, with special reference to the frame proposed in the Italian Vegetation Prodrome. The list includes 27 vascular and one bryophyte vegetation classes, hosting 194 low rank alien-dominated syntaxa. The different vegetation types detected for each syntaxonomic class and macro-vegetation group, defined by physiognomical and ecological attributes, are discussed.

Abstract

La Commissione Europea (CE) ha inserito ad oggi 36 taxa esotici vegetali nella lista delle specie esotiche invasive di rilevanza unionale ai sensi del Regolamento (UE) n. 1143/2014 del Parlamento Europeo e del Consiglio, recante disposizioni volte a prevenire e gestire l’introduzione e la diffusione delle specie esotiche invasive. La lista delle specie di rilevanza unionale viene periodicamente aggiornata e include quelle specie che rappresentano una grave minaccia per la biodiversità, ma anche per la salute dei cittadini e le attività economiche nei territori dell’Unione Europea e che necessitano di una gestione concertata a livello comunitario. La CE vigila sullo stato di ogni taxon grazie anche a periodiche rendicontazioni da parte dei paesi dell'Unione. In vista di tali report, tra il 2020 e il 2021 è stata definita e integrata la distribuzione di queste specie in Italia.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the association between postoperative delirium (POD) and in vivo markers of Alzheimer's disease pathology in nondemented hip fracture surgery patients. POD was assessed with the Confusion Assessment Method. Amyloid load was quantified on (18)F-Flutemetamol positron emission tomography images as standardized uptake value ratio. The aim of our research is to discover and analyse a possible relationship between two psychosocial disorders (depression and perceived mental stress) and traditional cardiovascular risk markers.We selected 106 subjects (58 males and 48 females), mean age 79.5 +/- 3.8-years old, from the Massa Lombarda Project, an epidemiological study, including 7000 north Italian adult subjects. We carried out anamnesis, clinical and blood tests. Then, we administered the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ range score 0-1) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SRDS range score 50-70 Z), as validated instruments for depression and stress evaluation, which focus on the individual's subjective perception and emotional response. Statistical descriptive and inferential analyses of data collected were performed.The multiple linear regression analysis showed a negative correlation between PSQ index score and uric acid, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, a positive and statistically significant correlation between PSQ index score and triglycerides (p0.05). We found an inverse relationship between Zung SRDS score and LDL-c, uric acid, glucose waist circumference values, this correlation was significant only for uric acid (p0.01). Besides, a positive and significant correlation between Zung SRDS and triglycerides (p0.05) was observed.We suppose that psycho-emotional stress and depression disorder, often diagnosed in elderly people, may influence different metabolic parameters (triglycerides, uric acid and BMI) that are involved in the complex process of metabolic syndrome.
