Este trabajo presenta los resultados del proyecto de investigación relacionado con la integración energética llevado a cabo en la fábrica de azúcar del Ingenio Risaralda S.A. Se muestra el desarrollo para cada una de las etapas de mejoramiento ejecutadas para reducir el vapor demandado para la elaboración de azúcar. Para alcanzar el objetivo propuesto fueron intervenidas las operaciones unitarias de calentamiento de jugo crudo, evaporación de jugo clarificado, cristalización de sacarosa y secado de azúcar húmeda. Los resultados del proyecto generaron una reducción del 19.2% en el consumo específico de vapor, pasando de 1,450 a 1,172 lbmvapor/TCM [657.6 a 531.5 kgvapor/TCM]. Igualmente, como producto de la implementación del proyecto de integración energética entre los años 2017 y 2020, se muestran los beneficios relacionados con el incremento de la venta de energía eléctrica en 3.3 GWh entregados a la red nacional.

The presence or not of collisions between objects is usually required to study the interaction between them, increasing the realism in virtual environments. Collision detection between polygonal objects has been widely studied, and more recently some studies have been made concerning collisions between volume objects. Collision detection between volume datasets and polygonal objects is introduced in this work. This kind of mixed scenes appears naturally in many applications such as surgery simulation and volume edition. To detect the collision, first the volume dataset is represented by a single 3D texture. Then, a mapping from eye space to volume space is established, such as each mesh fragment has a 3D texture coordinate. The collision is verified by fragment during the rasterization stage. We use OpenGL R occlusion query extension to count the number of mesh fragments colliding with the volume. Se describe Praemachiloides insularis sp. n. Microcoryphia de las Islas Baleares, especie próxima a P. janetscheki Bach de Roca, 1979 descrita del SE de la Península Ibérica. Se señalan las características que distinguen la nueva especie de las otras dos conocidas del género.

These advances herald a new era of predictive preventive personalized medicine (PPPM), although incorporation into clinical practice has proved to be challenging [1]. “NAGEN 1000” is a Spanish regional pilot study to implement recent advances of cutting edge genomic research technology into real clinical practice. The Navarra Government (Departamento de Desarrollo Económico - Dirección General de Industria, Energía e Innovación) supported this study through the GEMA challenge for the Strategic R&D Projects cal l 2017–2019, under the Regional Smart Specialization Strategy S3.

Hypopituitarism after moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually underdiagnosed and therefore undertreated. Its course can be divided in an acute phase during the first 14 days after TBI with 50 to 80% risk of hypopituitarism, and a chronic phase, beginning three months after the event, with a prevalence of hypopituitarism that ranges from 2 to 70%. Its pathophysiology has been addressed in several studies, suggesting that a vascular injury to the pituitary tissue is the most important mechanism during the acute phase, and an autoimmune one during chronic stages. In the acute phase, there are difficulties to correctly interpret pituitary axes. Hence, we propose a simple and cost-effective algorithm to detect and treat a potential hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis impairment and alterations of sodium homeostasis, both of which can be life-threatening. In the chronic phase, post-concussion syndrome is the most important differential diagnosis. Given the high prevalence of hypopituitarism, we suggest that all pituitary axes should be assessed in all patients with moderate to severe TBI, between 3 to 6 months after the event, and then repeated at 12 months after trauma by a specialized team in pituitary disease.

Adult progenitor cells reside in specialized microenvironments which maintain their undifferentiated cell state and trigger regenerative responses following injury. Although these environments are well described in several tissues, the cellular components that comprise the cardiac environment where progenitor cells are located remain unknown. Here we use Bmi1CreERT and Bmi1GFP mice as genetic tools to trace cardiac damage-responsive cells throughout the mouse lifespan. In adolescent mice, Bmi1+ damage-responsive cells are broadly distributed throughout the myocardium. In adult mice, however, Bmi1+ cells are confined predominately in perivascular areas with low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their number decline in an age-dependent manner. In vitro co-culture experiments with endothelial cells supported a regulatory role of the endothelium in damage-responsive cell behavior. Accordingly, in vivo genetic decrease of ROS levels in adult heart disengaged Bmi1+ cells from the cardiovascular network, recapitulating an adolescent-like Bmi1 expression profile. Thus, we identify cardiac perivascular regions as low-stress microenvironments that favor the maintenance of adult damage-responsive cells., Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Background: There is a gap between the number of patients requiring a renal allograft and the number of potential deceased donors (DD). One alternative is using allografts from non-related living donors (NRLD). Aim: To compare survival and complication of renal allograft recipients from DD and NRLD. Material and methods: Observational study of a cohort of renal allograft recipients. Of 253 transplants performed in a Chilean region between 1981 and 2003, 20 patients received and allograft from a NRLD. Graft and patient survival of these patients were compared with those of 93 patients receiving an allograft from a related living donor and 140 receiving it from a DD. Patients were followed for 10 years or until death or dialysis requirement. Results: No significant differences between groups in graft and patient survival, deaths with a functioning graft or return to dialysis were observed. Receptors of DD had more hospital admissions during the first years after receiving the graft, usually due to infections. Also a delayed graft function was more common among them. Glomerular filtration rate ten years after the graft was similar among the three groups. Conclusions: No differences in graft or patient survival was observed between patients receiving a renal allograft from NRLD, RLD or DD.

Es un estudio preliminar de una .serie de cerámicas de la época medieval andalusí encontradas en la Cueva de los Mármoles (Priego, Córdoba). Han sido atribuidas cronológicamente a la .segunda mitad del s. X y primera del s. XI. Son cerámicas utilizadas para el almacenaje y preparación de alimentos. Dichas pie zas han sido realizadas a mano y a tomo, y decoradas. Se ha determinado me diante lámina delgada la microestructura de las piezas cerámicas.

The effects of chronic excessive alcohol ingestion on the central nervous system were studied in neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) in the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). In this nucleus, neuron density and other morphometric parameters such as the somatic volume of the cells have been investigated both under normal conditions and under alcohol intoxication. Special attention was given to the possibility that positive somatic heteropycnosis may be a sign of imminent cell death. In addition, the percentage volumes occupied by normal neuronal soma and by affected cells were determined. Continuous alcohol treatment for 6 months reduced the size of certain types of neurons, the alteration being specially intense in areas with an abundance of larger neurons. In these areas more intense signs of somatic heteropycnosis also appeared. We discuss the relationship between the condition of the inhibitory neurons (GABAergic interneurons), the distribution of these in the lower zone of the nucleus, and their greater resistance to the influence of alcohol. This type of stereological analysis is intended to provide a better interpretation of the different degrees of the effects of alcohol, and to give more detailed information about changes at cellular level, both for comparative purposes with other situations and to shed light on the alterations caused by alcoholism.
