International audience; The atomic-scale characterization of surface active sites on γ-alumina still represents a great challenge for numerous catalytic applications. Here, we combine advanced density functional theory (DFT) calculations with one- and two-dimensional proton solid-state NMR experiments to identify the exact location and the spatial proximity of hydroxyl groups on γ-alumina crystallites. Our approach relies on revisited models for the (100), (111), basal (110)b, and lateral (110)l facets of γ-alumina, as well as for the edges at their intersections. Notably, we show that the ≃0 ppm AlTd-μ1-OH protons are predominantly located on edges, where these are free from the H-bond network. The proximities among the AlTd-μ1-OH as well as with μ2-OH groups are revealed by 1H–1H dipolar correlation experiments and analyzed in the light of the DFT calculations, which identify their location on the basal (110)b facet and on the (110)b/(100) and (110)b/(110)l edges. Using chlorine atoms to probe the presence of hydroxyls, we show that the chlorination occurs selectively by exchanging μ1-OH located on edges and on lateral (110)l facets. By contrast, the basal (110)b and lateral (111) facets are not probed by Cl. This exchange explains the disappearance of the ≃0 ppm peak and of the correlations involving AlTd-μ1-OH species. Moreover, after chlorination, a deshielding of the AlTd is observed on high-resolution 27Al NMR spectra. More subtle effects are visible on the proton correlation spectra, which are attributed to the disruption of the H-bond network in the course of chlorination.

Chlorine-containing disinfectants have been widely used all over the world to prevent COVID-19. However, little is known about the potential risk of chlorine-containing disinfectants in the marine environment. Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) is a typical marine economic diatom, often used as an effective biomarker in ecotoxicology research. Here, the present study has investigated the effect of different effective chlorine concentrations on photosynthesis of P. tricornutum by chlorophyll fluorescence spectroscopy. Results have demonstrated that chlorine exposure promoted the chlorophyll fluorescence intensity at initial stage (24 h), suggesting that a large amount of energy is emitted in the form of fluorescence. However, the chlorophyll fluorescence intensity could not be detected under the high effective chlorine concentrations (6.7 × 10−3, 1.0 × 10−2, 1.3 × 10−2 and 1.7 × 10−2 mg L−1) after 48 h, indicating that the chlorine had high toxicity leading to the death of microalgae. In addition, the emission spectra of P. tricornutum were determined to contain two distinct fluorescence peaks representing the core antenna of photosystem II (685 nm) and the photosystem I complexes (710 nm) in the control group. The fluorescence emission peak value at 685 nm is significantly lower than the peak value at 710 nm in the control group, whereas chlorine treatments were opposite. It can be concluded that microalgae can regulate the distribution of excitation energy between the two photosystems to ensure that algae can utilize light energy. The result also found that the peak position of fluorescence emission spectra has a blue shift in all of NaClO treatments. The fluorescence intensity of microalgae excited at 467 nm was lower than that at 439 nm in chlorine treatments, illustrating chlorophyll b antenna was more easily damaged than chlorophyll a antenna. Our findings are providing new insights into the changing mechanism of chlorophyll fluorescence on P. tricornutum under chlorine stress and valuable data for risk assessment of marine environments.

Microbial activity and regrowth in drinking water distribution systems is a major concern for water service companies. However, previous studies have focused on the microbial composition and diversity of the drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), with little discussion on microbial molecular ecological networks (MENs) in different water supply networks. MEN analysis explores the potential microbial interaction and the impact of environmental stress, to explain the characteristics of microbial community structures. In this study, the random matrix theory-based network analysis was employed to investigate the impact of seasonal variation including water source switching on the networks of three DWDSs that used different disinfection methods. The results showed that microbial interaction varied slightly with the seasons but was significantly influenced by different DWDSs. Proteobacteria, identified as key species, play an important role in the network. Combined UV-chlorine disinfection can effectively reduce the size and complexity of the network compared to chlorine disinfection alone, ignoring seasonal variations, which may affect microbial activity or control microbial regrowth in DWDSs. This study provides new insights for analyzing the dynamics of microbial interactions in DWDSs.

Misfolding and aggregation of transthyretin are implicated in the fatal systemic disease known as transthyretin amyloidosis. Here, we report the development of a naringenin derivative bearing two chlorine atoms that will be efficacious for preventing aggregation of transthyretin in the eye. The amyloid inhibitory activity of the naringenin derivative was as strong as that of tafamidis, which is the first therapeutic agent targeting transthyretin in the plasma. X-ray crystal structures of the compounds in complex with transthyretin demonstrated that the naringenin derivative with one chlorine bound to the thyroxine-binding site of transthyretin in the forward mode and that the derivative with two chlorines bound to it in the reverse mode. An ex vivo competitive binding assay showed that naringenin derivatives exhibited more potent binding than tafamidis in the plasma. Furthermore, an in vivo pharmacokinetic study demonstrated that the dichlorinated derivative was significantly delivered to the eye.

Acetaminophen is widely used to treat mild to moderate pain and to reduce fever. Under the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, this over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer has been drastically consumed, which makes it even more abundant than ever in municipal wastewater and drinking water sources. Chlorine is the most widely used oxidant in drinking water disinfection, and chlorination generally causes the degradation of organic compounds, including acetaminophen. In this study, a new reaction pathway in the chlorination of acetaminophen, i.e., oxidative coupling reactions via acetaminophen radicals, was investigated both experimentally and computationally. Using an ultraperformance liquid chromatograph coupled to an electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, we detected over 20 polymeric products in chlorinated acetaminophen samples, some of which have structures similar to the legacy pollutants "polychlorinated biphenyls". Both C-C and C-O bonding products were found, and the corresponding bonding processes and kinetics were revealed by quantum chemical calculations. Based on the product confirmation and intrinsic reaction coordinate computations, a pathway for the formation of the polymeric products in the chlorination of acetaminophen was proposed. This study suggests that chlorination may cause not only degradation but also upgradation of a phenolic compound or contaminant.

This study assessed the bacterial community composition of a drinking water system (DWS) serving a mid-sized city (120,000 inhabitants) in Brazil. Water samples, including raw and treated water, were collected at seven points throughout the DWS. DNA was extracted and analysed using high-throughput sequencing (Ion Torrent). Free chlorine and turbidity were measured in situ. Results showed that the highest relative abundance of 16S rRNA genes was from phyla Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria. The next most abundant phylum was Cyanobacteria, represented by Arthronema, Calothrix, and Synechococcus. An interesting observation was that the DNA-based analysis suggested a bacterial community change in the distribution network, with treated reservoir water being very different from the network samples. This suggests active microbiology within the distribution network and a tendency for bacterial diversity to decrease after chlorine disinfection but increase after pipeline distribution. In raw water, a predominance of Proteobacteria was observed with reduced Cyanobacteria, showing a negative correlation. In treated water, Proteobacteria were negatively correlated with Bacteroidetes. Finally, 16S rRNA genes from Firmicutes (especially Staphylococcus) had a high abundance in the chlorinated water, which may indicate the phylum's resistance to chlorine residuals. Opportunistic pathogens, e.g., Mycobacteria, Legionella, and Staphylococcus, were also observed.

We previously reported a novel polymeric surface coating, namely, HaloFilm™ that can immobilize and extend the antimicrobial activity of chlorine on surfaces. In this study, we demonstrated the continuous antiviral efficacy of HaloFilm when applied on stainless steel and cotton gauze as two representative models for non-porous and porous surfaces against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Forty-eight hours post HaloFilm application and chlorination and 2 h post the viral challenge, the inoculum titre was reduced by 2.25 ± 0.33 and ≥4.36 ± 0.23 log10 TCID50 on non-porous and porous surfaces, respectively. The half-life of the virus was shorter (13.86 min) on a HaloFilm-coated surface than what has been reported on copper (46.44 min).

Applicability of statistical models in predicting chlorine decay remains minimally explored. This study predicted residual chlorine using six deep learning and nine machine learning techniques. Suitability of multimodel ensembles (MMEs) including arithmetic mean of all the models (Ens1), average of the best three performing models (Ens2), and weighted mean of outputs from all the 15 models was investigated. A total of nine “goodness-of-fit” measures (such as distance correlation (rd) and Taylor skill score) were used to rank the models. The two best deep learning methods were the nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous input (NARX) ( r d = 0.51 ) and feedforward backpropagation (FFB) ( r d = 0.61 ). The two best machine learning algorithms included random forests (RF) ( r d = 0.64 ) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) ( r d = 0.59 ). Eventually, Ens2 was obtained using RF, FFB, and GPR. Ens2 performed better than Ens1 and Ens3. The amount of variance explained by individual models and MMEs was over the ranges of 13–66% and 51–74%, respectively. Ens2 explained 74% of the total variance in observed residual chlorine. Remarkably, the appropriateness of the MMEs depends on the approach for combining model outputs, and the number of models considered. This study demonstrated the acceptability of statistical MMEs in predicting chlorine residual concentration in drinking water.

The Paternò-Büchi (PB) reaction is a cycloaddition reaction between a carbon-carbon double bond (C═C) and a photochemically excited carbonyl-containing compound. The constrained ring formed between the C═C bond and the PB reagent is more susceptible to fragmentation by collision-induced dissociation, which facilitates identification of the C═C position within the fatty acyl tails of lipids. Although the original PB reaction using acetone had a low yield of derivatized lipids and therefore a low yield of diagnostic ions, a new generation of PB reagents based on halogenated acetophenones has improved the reaction yield substantially. In this study, we investigated the use of halogenated PB reagents and ion mobility to improve the identification of PB-derivatized lipids by shifting them out of the densely populated lipid region of ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) space. Several halogenated PB reagents containing fluorine, chlorine and bromine were investigated for their ability to decrease the collision cross-section (CCS) values of derivatized lipids and yield sufficient intensity for both the derivatized lipid and its diagnostic ions. We found that 4'-chloro-2',6'-difluoroacetophenone (CDFAP) displayed the best performance, with an average decrease in CCS of 4.4% and yield of derivatized lipids and diagnostic ions comparable to the trifluorinated acetophenone reagent proposed by the Xia group. The unique isotope pattern resulting from the chlorine substituent aided in identification of the derivatized lipids and their diagnostic ions, as well. We further demonstrate that derivatization with CDFAP preserves the separation of lipids classes in IM-MS space.

A new co-processing mode of waste liquid from anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes and municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) dechlorination is reported in this paper. Taking acetic acid, the most common organic acid in anaerobic fermentation systems, as the representative of anaerobic fermentation organic acids, the improvement of the dechlorination effect and the mechanism of washing MSWI-FA with low concentrations of organic acid lotion were explored. The chlorine content of MSWI-FA was reduced to 0.82% after the optimal process washing pretreatment. Three anaerobic fermentation waste liquids (AFWLs) were used to verify that the chlorine content of MSWI-FA could be reduced to less than 1%, and the dechlorination effect of brewery wastewater, which reduced the chlorine content of MSWI-FA to 0.91%, was the best at this. A new method using microstrip patch sensor is designed, simulated, and measured to detect the dosage of added chlorine to the drinking water using the relation between permittivity and matching impedance. The simulation is done using computer simulation technology-microwave studio software. The proposed sensor is designed on a single FR-4 layer with a low profile, 0.499 GHz bandwidth, center frequency of 2.94 GHz, gain of 6.55 dBi, and a good front to back ratio of 17.84 dB. In this work, the antenna design is started from a conventional patch antenna equation. Then, an optimization process is performed to achieve good parameter values for obtaining the desired objective. The objective is to utilize the microwave frequency to measure the chlorine dosage in water. The measurement results proved that the matching impedance can be used to find out the dosage of chlorine in drinkable water. The proposed method overcomes the open-ended coaxial probe method in terms of experimental time and contactless testing and shows high matching with the latter actual data. Moreover, the proposed method overcomes the conventional methods in terms of continuity and large scale of testing, non-contacting with the samples of water, and no additive chemical materials, which make the water samples not drinkable.

This study synthesized and characterized ZIF-8 nanoparticles encapsulated with trans-cinnamaldehyde oil (TC) and evaluated their antimicrobial effectiveness against Escherichia coli O157:H7 on fresh spinach leaves. This study aimed to evaluate an alternative to reduce trihalomethane (THM) formation in brewing water. THM affects the organoleptic properties of water and, consequently, the produced beer. Water treatment based on common chemicals such as alum and free chlorine could potentially form THM. Therefore, we studied the replacement of chemicals used in water treatment: aluminum sulfate by a tannin-based coagulant and sodium hypochlorite by chlorine dioxide. Experimentally, jar tests were conducted, and the role of coagulants and oxidizing agents was evaluated for: the removal of apparent color, turbidity, natural organic matter (NOM) and microorganisms; the formation of trihalomethanes (THM); and the sensory quality of the water. Using tannin-based coagulant with chlorine dioxide was associated with the lowest THM in treated water (1.7 µg/L) and higher satisfaction in the sensory analysis. However, using these chemicals make the water treatment more expensive than the current strategy. Overall, using the tannin-based coagulant and chlorine dioxide treatment is an alternative to produce water with a lower THM concentration, better physical-chemical, and sensory quality. These findings motivate further brewing experiments and a deeper economics evaluation considering the process's sustainability.

Dioxins are a kind of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with extremely toxic. Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) process has become one of the most dominant discharge sources of dioxins. A comprehensive discussion about dioxin formation mechanisms was reviewed in this paper, and the mechanisms of high-temperature gas-phase reaction and "de novo" synthesis were systematically illustrated in the form of diagrams. What's more, the effects of various influencing factors on the formation of PCDD/Fs were briefly analyzed in the form of a table. We believed that temperature, catalyst, chlorine source, carbon source, oxygen concentration and moisture were necessary factors for PCDD/Fs formation. Control technologies of dioxins in MSWI process were summarized subsequently from three stages: pre-combustion, in-combustion and post-combustion, and a device for synergistic removal of dioxins based on multi-field force coupling and technical routes for controlling dioxin emissions were proposed, so as to provide mechanisms and methods for effectively reducing the emission concentration of dioxins. An introduction was also conducted of dioxin control technologies in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) in this paper, and their mechanisms, advantages, disadvantages and technical maturity were illustrated in the form of diagrams, which can provide theory and reference for in-depth research of follow-up scholars and industrial application of dioxin control technologies. Finally, current research hotspots, challenges and future research directions were proposed.

Outbreaks of enteric pathogens linked to wheat flour have led the wheat milling industry to seek solutions addressing this food safety concern. Chlorinated water at 400 to 700 ppm has been used in the flour milling industry as a tempering aid to control growth of yeast and mold in tempering bins. However, the effectiveness of chlorinated water for inactivating enteric pathogens on wheat kernels was unknown. Five strains of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and two strains of Salmonella were inoculated onto hard red spring wheat at 7 log CFU/g and stored at room temperature for 1 month. Inoculated wheat was tempered with four concentrations (0, 400, 800, and 1,200 ppm) of chlorinated water (pH 6.5). The reduction due to chlorine was determined by calculating change in microbial loads at each chlorine level by using the response at 0 ppm as a reference. Uninoculated wheat tempered with chlorinated water was used to measure flour quality parameters. Changes in pathogen population over 18 h ranged from -2.35 to -0.30 log CFU/g with 800 ppm of chlorinated water and were not significantly different from changes at 400 and 1,200 ppm. Significant (P0.05) differences in the extent of reduction were observed among strains. However, the effect of chlorinated water at reducing native microbes on wheat kernels was minimal, with an average reduction of 0.39 log CFU/g for all concentrations. No significant (P0.05) changes occurred in flour quality and gluten functionality or during bread making for grains tempered at 400 and 800 ppm of chlorinated water. There were small but significant (P0.05) changes in flour protein content, final viscosity, and water absorption when tempered with 1,200 ppm of chlorinated water. The data showed that the level of chlorinated water currently used in industry for tempering could reduce enteric pathogen numbers by 1.22 log CFU/g for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and 2.29 log CFU/g for Salmonella, with no significant effects on flour quality and gluten functionality.

Giardia duodenalis is responsible for several waterborne gastrointestinal outbreaks worldwide. In addition to limitations presented by the main disinfection methods, assessing the inactivation efficiency of cysts after the treatment also poses challenges. Thus, this study aimed to use the 5-carboxyfluorescein diacetate acetoxymethyl ester (CFDA-AM) staining protocol to evaluate the viability of G. duodenalis cysts inactivated by different UV and chlorination doses and boiling times. Under epifluorescent microscopy, metabolically active cysts that presented green fluorescence were considered viable. In contrast, when no green fluorescence could be observed, organisms were considered non-viable. Although statistical analysis revealed that increasing the UV dose did not significantly decrease the percentage of viable cysts, the fluorescence signal intensity decreased considerably when the cysts were irradiated with a dose equal to or greater than 80 mJ cm−2. Regarding chlorination and boiling treatments, this study demonstrated that no cyst showed fluorescence at the lowest NaClO concentration (0.5 mg/L) and in the shortest boiling time (2 min). Despite some limitations regarding the use of metabolic activity as a viability marker, this methodology is rapid, easy to run and cost-effective. Thus, we conclude that the CFDA-AM staining protocol has the potential to be used to assess Giardia cyst inactivation, although further research is required.

Chlorine has important roles in the Earth's systems. In different forms, it helps balance the charge and osmotic potential of cells, provides energy for microorganisms, mobilizes metals in geologic fluids, alters the salinity of waters, and degrades atmospheric ozone. Despite this importance, there has not been a comprehensive summary of chlorine's geobiology. Here, we unite different areas of recent research to describe a biogeochemical cycle for chlorine. Chlorine enters the biosphere through volcanism and weathering of rocks and is sequestered by subduction and the formation of evaporite sediments from inland seas. In the biosphere, chlorine is converted between solid, dissolved, and gaseous states and in oxidation states ranging from -1 to +7, with the soluble, reduced chloride ion as its most common form. Living organisms and chemical reactions change chlorine's form through oxidation and reduction and the addition and removal of chlorine from organic molecules. Chlorine can be transported through the atmosphere, and the highest oxidation states of chlorine are produced by reactions between sunlight and trace chlorine gases. Partial oxidation of chlorine occurs across the biosphere and creates reactive chlorine species that contribute to the oxidative stress experienced by living cells. A unified view of this chlorine cycle demonstrates connections between chlorine biology, chemistry, and geology that affect life on the Earth.

Though chlorine is a cost-effective disinfectant for water and wastewaters, the bacteria surviving after chlorination pose serious public health and environmental problems. This review critically assesses the mechanism of chlorine disinfection as described by various researchers; factors affecting chlorination efficacy; and the re-growth potential of microbial contaminations in treated wastewater post chlorination to arrive at meaningful doses for ensuring health safety. Literature analysis shows procedural inconsistencies in the assessment of chlorine tolerant bacteria, making it extremely difficult to compare the tolerance characteristics of different reported tolerant bacteria. A comparison of logarithmic reduction after chlorination and the concentration-time values for prominent pathogens led to the generation of a standard protocol for the assessment of chlorine tolerance. The factors that need to be critically monitored include applied chlorine doses, contact time, determination of chlorine demands of the medium, and the consideration of bacterial counts immediately after chlorination and in post chlorinated samples (regrowth). The protocol devised here appropriately assesses the chlorine-tolerant bacteria and urges the scientific community to report the regrowth characteristics as well. This would increase the confidence in data interpretation that can provide a better understanding of chlorine tolerance in bacteria and aid in formulating strategies for effective chlorination.

While efficacy of chlorine against Phi6, a widely-used surrogate for pathogenic enveloped viruses, is well-documented, surfaces common to low-resource contexts are under-researched. Disinfectants are added to swimming pools to kill harmful pathogens. Although liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is the most commonly used disinfectant, alternative disinfection techniques like electrochemically generated mixed oxidants or electrochemically generated chlorine, often referred to as salt water pools, are growing in popularity. However, these disinfectants react with natural organic matter and anthropogenic contaminants introduced to the pool water by swimmers to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs). DBPs have been linked to several adverse health effects, such as bladder cancer, adverse birth outcomes, and asthma. In this study, we quantified 60 DBPs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and assessed the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of an indoor community swimming pool before and after switching to a salt water pool with electrochemically generated chlorine. Interestingly, the total DBPs increased by 15% upon implementation of the salt water pool, but the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity decreased by 45% and 15%, respectively. Predominant DBP classes formed were haloacetic acids, with trichloroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid contributing 57% of the average total DBPs formed. Haloacetonitriles, haloacetic acids, and haloacetaldehydes were the primary drivers of calculated cytotoxicity, and haloacetic acids were the primary driver of calculated genotoxicity. Diiodoacetic acid, a highly toxic iodinated DBP, is reported for the first time in swimming pool water. Bromide impurities in sodium chloride used to electrochemically generate chlorine led to a 73% increase in brominated DBPs, primarily driven by bromochloroacetic acid. This study presents the most extensive DBP study to-date for salt water pools.

Chlorine disinfection of saline wastewater effluents rich in bromide and iodide forms relatively toxic brominated and iodinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Ultrasonication is a relatively new water treatment technology, and it is less sensitive to suspended solids in wastewaters. In this study, we examined the effects of ultrasonication (in terms of reactor type and combination mode with chlorination) on the DBP formation and toxicity in chlorinated primary and secondary saline wastewater effluents. Compared with the chlorinated wastewater effluent samples without ultrasonication, ultrasonic horn pretreatment of the wastewater effluent samples reduced the total organic halogen (TOX) levels in chlorination by ∼30%, but ultrasonic bath pretreatment of the wastewater samples did not significantly change the TOX levels in chlorination, which might be attributed to the higher energy utilization and decomposition extent of organic DBP precursors in the ultrasonic horn reactor. Moreover, the TOX levels in the chlorinated samples with ultrasonic horn pretreatment (USH-chlorination), simultaneous treatment (chlorination+USH) and subsequent treatment (chlorination-USH) were also significantly reduced, with the maximum TOX reductions occurring in the samples with ultrasonic horn pretreatment. A toxicity index was calculated by weighting and summing the levels of total organic chlorine, total organic bromine and total organic iodine in each treated sample. The calculated toxicity index values of the chlorinated wastewater effluent samples followed a descending rank order of "chlorination""chlorination+USH""chlorination-USH""USH-chlorination", with the lowest toxicity occurring in the samples with ultrasonic horn pretreatment. Then, a developmental toxicity bioassay was conducted for each treated sample. The measured toxicity index values of the chlorinated wastewater samples followed the same descending rank order.

Although the health benefits of swimming are well-documented, health effects such as asthma and bladder cancer are linked to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in pool water. DBPs are formed from the reaction of disinfectants such as chlorine (Cl) or bromine (Br) with organics in the water. Our previous study (Daiber et al., Environ. Sci. Technol. 50, 6652; 2016) found correlations between the concentrations of classes of DBPs and the mutagenic potencies of waters from chlorinated or brominated swimming pools and spas. We extended this study by identifying significantly different concentrations of 21 individual DBPs in brominated or chlorinated pool and spa waters as well as identifying which DBPs and additional DBP classes were most associated with the mutagenicity of these waters. Using data from our previous study, we found that among 21 DBPs analyzed in 21 pool and spa waters, the concentration of bromoacetic acid was significantly higher in Br-waters versus Cl-waters, whereas the concentration of trichloroacetic acid was significantly higher in Cl-waters. Five Br-DBPs (tribromomethane, dibromochloroacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, bromoacetic acid, and tribromoacetic acid) had significantly higher concentrations in Br-spa versus Cl-spa waters. Cl-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Cl-DBPs (trichloroacetaldehyde, trichloromethane, dichloroacetic acid, and chloroacetic acid), whereas Br-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Br-DBPs (tribromomethane, dibromoacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, and tribromoacetic acid). The concentrations of the sum of all 4 trihalomethanes, all 11 Br-DBPs, and all 5 nitrogen-containing DBPs were each significantly higher in brominated than in chlorinated pools and spas. The 8 Br-DBPs were the only DBPs whose individual concentrations were significantly correlated with the mutagenic potencies of the pool and spa waters. These results, along with those from our earlier study, highlight the importance of Br-DBPs in the mutagenicity of these recreational waters.

In this study, the formation of iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) was systematically evaluated and compared for three treatment processes - (i) chlorination, (ii) monochloramine, and (iii) dichloramination - under different pH conditions. The results demonstrated that I-THM formation decreased in the order of monochloraminationdichloraminationchlorination in acidic and neutral pH. However, the generation of I-THMs increased in the dichloraminationchlorinationmonochloramination order in alkaline condition. Specifically, the formation of I-THMs increased as pH increased from 5 to 9 during chlorination and monochloramination processes, while the maximum I-THM formation occurred at pH 7 during dichloramination. Swimming pools adopt chlorination to ensure microbial safety. Giardia has attracted attention in swimming pool water because of its occurrence, pathogenicity, and chlorine resistance. To control Giardia concentrations in pool water and reduce the microbial risk, higher chlorine doses are required during disinfection. Unfortunately, this process produces carcinogenic disinfection byproducts that increase the risk of chemical exposure. Therefore, quantitatively evaluating the comparative microbial vs. chemical exposure risks that stem from chlorination inactivation of Giardia in swimming pool water is an issue that demands attention. We simulated an indoor swimming pool disinfection scenario that followed common real-world disinfection practices. A quantitative microbial risk assessment coupled with a chemical exposure risk assessment was employed to compare the Giardia microbial exposure risk (MER) and the trihalomethane chemical exposure risk (CER) to humans. The results demonstrated a 22% decrease in MER- and CER-induced health exposure risk, from 8.45E-5 at 8:00 to 6.60E-5 at 19:00. Both the MER and CER decreased gradually, dropping to 3.26E-5 and 3.35E-5 at 19:00, respectively. However, the CER exceeded the MER after 18:30 and became the dominant factor affecting the total exposure risk. Past the 18 hr mark, the contribution of trihalomethane CER far exceeded the risk aversion from microbial inactivation, leading to a net increase in total exposure risk despite the declining MER. Swimmers may consider swimming after 19:00, when the total exposure risk is the lowest. Lowering water temperature and/or pH were identified as the most sensitive factors to minimize the overall health exposure risk.

A survey was conducted at eight U.S. drinking water plants, that spanned a wide range of water qualities and treatment/disinfection practices. Plants that treated heavily-wastewater-impacted source waters had lower trihalomethane to dihaloacetonitrile ratios due to the presence of more organic nitrogen and HAN precursors. As the bromide to total organic carbon ratio increased, there was more bromine incorporation into DBPs. This has been shown in other studies for THMs and selected emerging DBPs (HANs), whereas this study examined bromine incorporation for a wider group of emerging DBPs (haloacetaldehydes, halonitromethanes). Moreover, bromine incorporation into the emerging DBPs was, in general, similar to that of the THMs. Epidemiology studies that show an association between adverse health effects and brominated THMs may be due to the formation of brominated emerging DBPs of heath concern. Plants with higher free chlorine contact times before ammonia addition to form chloramines had less iodinated DBP formation in chloraminated distribution systems, where there was more oxidation of the iodide to iodate (a sink for the iodide) by the chlorine. This has been shown in many bench-scale studies (primarily for iodinated THMs), but seldom in full-scale studies (where this study also showed the impact on total organic iodine. Collectively, the THMs, haloacetic acids, and emerging DBPs accounted for a significant portion of the TOCl, TOBr, and TOI; however, ∼50% of the TOCl and TOBr is still unknown. The correlation of the sum of detected DBPs with the TOCl and TOBr suggests that they can be used as reliable surrogates.

Use of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in pesticides may lead to residual levels in food crops, thus raising food safety and environmental concerns. Because little is known about Ag NP behavior in wash water during typical commercial washing of fresh produce, this study assessed the temporal changes in Ag NP behavior when exposed to 2 to 100 mg/L free chlorine (Cl2) in simulated lettuce wash water for up to 10 days. Aggregate size and zeta potential of Ag NPs (5 mg/L) were evaluated in the presence and absence of dissolved lettuce extract (DLE, 0.1%), with Ag NPs in deionized water serving as the control treatment. In the presence of chlorine, greater aggregation of Ag NPs occurred over time (49 to 431 nm) compared with the control treatment (P0.05). Lower zeta potentials (-39 to -95 mV) were observed in the chlorine-only treatments, likely due to the formation of AgCl particles. Larger aggregates and lower zeta potentials were also observed in DLE (84 to 273 nm and -28 to -32 mV, respectively), as compared with the control treatment. After 7 to 10 days, larger aggregates were seen in the chlorine-only treatments as compared with the DLE treatments, despite lower zeta potentials, probably facilitated by nucleation and crystal growth of AgCl. Transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy confirmed the formation of AgCl-Ag NP composite particles with chlorine and the embedding of AgCl and Ag NPs in the DLE matrix. Thus, DLE might stabilize and protect Ag NPs from chlorine. These findings indicate that chlorine and plant-released organic material can substantially change the behavior of Ag NPs, which may, in turn, impact both removal from fresh-cut produce during washing and their environmental fate.

UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) advanced oxidation process has attracted significant attention for removal of micropollutants in water. However, during practical water treatment applications, the PMS treatment must be performed before the UV treatment to achieve full contact. In this study, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was selected as the target micropollutant. Four different operational approaches, including UV alone, PMS alone, simultaneous UV/PMS and sequential PMS-UV, were compared for their differences in SMX removal and disinfection by-product (DBP) formation potentials during chlorine-driven disinfection. Among the four approaches, UV/PMS and PMS-UV achieved over 90% removal efficiencies for SMX without substantial differences. For raw water, the trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation potential after treatment with PMS-UV was lower than that after UV/PMS treatment. The time interval over which the PMS-UV process was conducted had little effect on the final removal efficiency for SMX. However, a brief (5 min) pre-PMS treatment significantly reduced the TCNM formation potential and the genotoxicity from DBPs. The formation risk for TCNM during chlorination increased markedly with increasing PMS dosages, and the appropriate dosage under these experimental conditions was suggested to be 0.5-1.0 mmol/L. Under alkaline conditions, PMS-UV treatment can enhance SMX degradation as well as dramatically reduced the formation potentials for haloketones, haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes. This study suggests that proper optimization of UV/PMS processes can remove SMX and reduce its DBP formation.

Electrocatalytic oxidation is an effective technology for treatment of refractory organic pollutants, and its performance strongly depends on anode materials. Among all anode materials, graphene (GN) owns the advantages of high stability and lack of secondary pollution. The catalytic performance of GN can be further improved through heteroatom doping. Here, P/N-codoped graphene (PN-GN) materials were optimized and used as an anode material for 4-acetamidophenol (APAP) electrocatalytic degradation. Result indicated that PN-GN had lower internal resistance, larger specific surface area, and higher electrochemical activity than single-doped graphene materials. The catalytic activity of GN was greatly improved by P/N codoping. When PN-GN (P8.4%-N7.6%-500 °C) was used as catalyst (current of 20 mA, initial pH of 7, reaction time of 60 min), the degradation efficiency of APAP reached 98.2% ± 1.8%, which was 17.9% ± 3.6% higher than P-codoped graphene (P-GN), 14.7% ± 4.6% higher than N-codoped graphene (N-GN), and 54.0% ± 5.2% higher than GN. After 180 min of reaction, the degradation efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was 78.5%. The formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during UV/chlorine treatment, especially nitrogenous DBPs, is not well understood. This study investigated the formation mechanisms for dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) from typical amino compounds during UV/chlorine treatment. Compared to chlorination, the yields of DCAN increase by 88-240% during UV/chlorine treatment from real waters, while the yields of DCAN from amino compounds increase by 3.3-5724 times. The world is not on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6.1 to provide universal access to safely managed drinking water by 2030. Removal of priority microbial contaminants by disinfection is one aspect of ensuring water is safely managed. Passive chlorination (also called in-line chlorination) represents one approach to disinfecting drinking water before or at the point of collection (POC), without requiring daily user input or electricity. In contrast to manual household chlorination methods typically implemented at the point of use (POU), passive chlorinators can reduce the user burden for chlorine dosing and enable treatment at scales ranging from communities to small municipalities. In this review, we synthesized evidence from 27 evaluations of passive chlorinators (in 19 articles, 3 NGO reports, and 5 theses) conducted across 16 countries in communities, schools, health care facilities, and refugee camps. Of the 27 passive chlorinators we identified, the majority (22/27) were solid tablet or granular chlorine dosers, and the remaining devices were liquid chlorine dosers. We identified the following research priorities to address existing barriers to scaled deployment of passive chlorinators: (i) strengthening local chlorine supply chains through decentralized liquid chlorine production, (ii) validating context-specific business models and financial sustainability, (iii) leveraging remote monitoring and sensing tools to monitor real-time chlorine levels and potential system failures, and (iv) designing handpump-compatible passive chlorinators to serve the many communities reliant on handpumps as a primary drinking water source. We also propose a set of reporting indicators for future studies to facilitate standardized evaluations of the technical performance and financial sustainability of passive chlorinators. In addition, we discuss the limitations of chlorine-based disinfection and recognize the importance of addressing chemical contamination in drinking water supplies. Passive chlorinators deployed and managed at-scale have the potential to elevate the quality of existing accessible and available water services to meet "safely managed" requirements.

Recent discovery of vesicle-cloaked virus clusters (i.e., viral vesicles) has greatly challenged the central paradigm of viral transmission and infection as a single virion. To understand the environmental transmission of viral vesicles, we used an in vivo model to investigate their environmental persistence and engineering control by disinfection. Murine rotavirus vesicles maintained both their integrity and infectivity after incubation in filtered freshwater and wastewater for at least 7 days, with 24.5-27.5% of the vesicles still intact at 16 weeks after exposure to both waters. Free chlorine disinfection at a dosage of 13.3 mg min L(−1) did not decompose murine rotavirus vesicles, and it was much less effective in inactivating rotaviruses inside vesicles than free rotaviruses, based on the quantification of rotavirus shedding in mouse stool and rotavirus replication in small intestines. Rotavirus vesicles may be more environmentally transmissible than free rotaviruses regardless of disinfection. Vesicle-mediated en bloc transmission could be responsible for vesicles’ resistance to disinfection, due to an increased multiplicity of infection and/or genetic recombination or reassortment to promote infection. Our work highlights the environmental, biological, and public health significance of viral vesicles, and the findings call for urgent action in advancing disinfection for pathogen control.

Objectives: Hospital-associated infections with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) have increased dramatically in Denmark. A cornerstone in infection control is effective cleaning and disinfection. This study investigated the survival and resuscitation/growth of clinical isolates of E. faecium exposed to the chlorine-releasing disinfectant, sodium dichloroisocyanurate plus detergent (NaDCC Plus). Methods: To assess biocide efficacy, we modified a method developed to characterise the dose-time-response of bacteria to antibiotics. E. faecium isolates (n = 59) were screened in 96-well plates containing 50–1400 ppm free available chlorine. Bacteria were exposed for 10 min, after which the biocide was inactivated with a neutralizer. Cells were collected by centrifugation, new broth added, and after 20–22 h, viability was recorded as growth/no growth. For a subset of strains the impact of shorter biocide exposure times were examined, as was the influence of longer incubation times. Results: E. faecium survived exposure to relatively high concentrations of NaDCC Plus, average 415 ppm of free available chlorine (SD ± 78 ppm), compared to recommended in-use concentration (1000 ppm). “Outbreak” clones did not prove more tolerant to NaDCC Plus compared to other VREfm clones, hospital-associated vancomycin-susceptible E. faecium (VSEfm) or community-associated VSEfm. Shorter exposure time and extended incubation time in broth both significantly increased the concentration needed to eradicate E. faecium, with some isolates surviving higher concentrations than the recommended in-use concentration. Conclusion: Our results indicate that if an exposure time of 10 min is not achieved, the efficacy of the disinfectant will not be sufficient.

Klorin adalah salah satu bahan kimia yang digunakan sebagai agen pemutih pada beras. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi kandungan klorin pada beras yang dijual di pasar Kota Salatiga. Metode yang digunakan dengan purposive sampling, analisis organoleptik, dan analisis iodmetri. Hasil penelitian, terdapat 14 sampel yang terdiri dari 3 variaetas beras yang semuanya negatif mengandung klorin. Dapat disimpulkan beras-beras yang di jual di Pasar Salatiga aman untuk tidak mengandung cemaran klorin. Rice is the staple food of the Indonesian people. To improve the quality of rice, people wash the rice with bleach to increase its selling value. Chlorine is one of the chemicals used as a bleaching agent in rice. The purpose of this study was to identify the chlorine content of rice in the Salatiga City market. The method used is purposive sampling, organoleptic analysis, and iodmetric analysis. The results of the study, there were 14 samples consisting of 3 varieties of rice, all of which were negative for chlorine. Can be concluded that the rice sold at the Salatiga Market is safe and does not contain chlorine pollution.

In this research, mono- and dual-species biofilms of Escherichia coli (O45:H2 and O121:H19) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium formed on stainless-steel coupons were treated with 100 mg/L NaClO for 1 min. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was applied to investigate the spatial structural dynamics of mono- and dual-species biofilms, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was employed to further investigate their metabolic responses toward chlorine. CLSM results indicated that mixed-species biofilms (total biovolume, 148,000 to 167,000 μm(3)) stimulated the growth of biomass 2 to 6 times that of single-species biofilms. Upon chlorine treatment, E. coli O45 and S. Typhimurium achieved less reduction (P < 0.05) when coexisting in mixed biofilms (0.70 and 1.17 log CFU/coupon reductions, respectively) compared with their corresponding single-species biofilms (1.97 and 2.01 log CFU/coupon reductions, respectively), while for E. coli O121, more reduction (P < 0.05) was achieved in a mixed biofilm (1.37 log CFU/coupon reductions) compared with its single-species biofilm (0.59 log CFU/coupon reductions). Moreover, NMR results suggested that the increase of putrescine (antioxidation regulator) and the decrease of glucose (enhanced glycolysis for energy replenishment) might contribute to the improved chlorine tolerance in mixed biofilms. Overall, dual-species biofilms promoted biofilm growth and their chlorine tolerance. This study improved our knowledge of the metabolic difference of single- and mixed-species biofilms of E. coli and Salmonella to chlorine sanitization and raised an urgency to investigate the effectiveness of common disinfectants against multispecies consortia. IMPORTANCE Outbreaks of Escherichia coli and Salmonella in food might be associated with the cross-contamination of biofilms on food-contact surfaces. The knowledge of the sanitization of mono-species biofilm on the food-contact surface is well established, while mixed-species biofilm occurs more naturally, which could profoundly affect the efficacy of sanitizer. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the efficacy of using chlorine against single- and dual-species biofilms of E. coli and Salmonella along with the underlying bacterial metabolic responses. The responses of a mixed biofilm of E. coli and Salmonella to chlorine sanitization were clarified, providing insights to develop a targeted and green sanitization strategy against specific pathogens by perturbing their most susceptible metabolism pathway without sanitizer residue.

In this study, we report the formation and cancer risk estimation of trihalomethanes (THMs) emanating from ‘ex-situ’ chlorination of shallow hand-dug well water obtained from a peri-urban area of Mufulira District, Zambia. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential cancer risks for people in this area where chlorine water disinfection at the household level is commonly practiced. Water samples from 13 randomly selected hand-dug wells (4–8 m deep) were collected and analyzed for pH, turbidity, and dissolved organic carbon before chlorination. Then another set of water samples from the same 13 wells was chlorinated using the methods commonly practiced in this area, consistent with WHO recommended doses. The chlorination degradation products, THMs, trichloromethane, bromodichloromethane (CHCl2Br), dibromochloromethane (CHClBr2), and tribromomethane, were determined at three different times of 60, 180, and 300 min after chlorination, while residual chlorine was determined immediately after chlorination and at 60 and 1,440 min after chlorination. THMs were determined using gas chromatography (GC), while residual chlorine was determined colorimetrically. Then cancer risk estimation from ingestion, inhalation, and dermal routes was carried out. All water samples from the 13 wells showed elevated amounts of THMs, which also increased with increasing contact time. For instance, the concentrations of THMs at 60 min after chlorination ranged from 24.3 ± 2.0 to 61.3 ± 1.0 μg/L, while at 180 and 300 min, ranged between 85.6 ± 4.3–146.9 ± 2.5 μg/L and 188.1 ± 7.1–250.1 ± 7.1 μg/L, respectively. It was observed that tribromomethane was not detected at all in all samples, while CHCl2Br and CHClBr2 were only detected at 180 and 300 min post chlorination. The lifetime cancer risk estimation results showed negligible risk at 60 min post chlorination. However, at 180 and 300 min post chlorination, the results were far above negligible, but within the regulatory US EPA limits. The overall risk, however, could not be ignored, given a multiplicity of exposure to various other contaminants, raising concerns over additivity and synergistic interactive effects, particularly for non-cancer hazard indices.

Among these abiotic stresses, salinity is the main damaging factor as it reduces the yield of wheat plant with moderate salt tolerance. For its survival, plant undergoes through some genetic, biochemical and physiological changes to tackle the stress. This review mainly describes the conditions where various ions present in the soil, especially sodium and chlorine, enter into the plant and the genes or proteins involved with survival mechanism against the damage in plants. Salt stress causes alteration in enzymatic activity and Photosynthesis, oxidative stress, damage of cellular structure and components and ionic imbalance. Ion toxicity stress occur due to accumulation of excessive sodium ion and chloride ion. Transcriptional factors TaPIMP, TaSRG and TaMYBsdu 1 play key role in gene expression mechanism to overcome the stress. High affinity potassium transporter gene family is responsible for salt tolerance in wheat plant. HKT1;4 and HKT1;5 genes are responsible for Na exclusion in Triticum monococcum. Forty QTLs were found with the marker assisted selection in bread wheat for salinity tolerance and some morphological traits, 5 QTLs were related to sodium ion exclusion.
