Search

The Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT) will be the first focusing X-ray telescope based on a "Lobster-Eye" optical design to be flown on Sino-French mission SVOM. SVOM will be dedicated to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts and more generally time-domain astrophysics. The MXT telescope is a compact (focal length ~ 1.15 m) and light (< 42 kg) instrument, sensitive in the 0.2--10 keV energy range. It is composed of an optical system, based on micro-pore optics (MPOs) of 40 micron pore size, coupled to a low-noise pnCDD X-ray detector. In this paper we describe the expected scientific performance of the MXT telescope, based on the End-to-End calibration campaign performed in fall 2021, before the integration of the SVOM payload on the satellite., 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

In this report we summarize the activities of the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC) and the work done since the last in-person meeting in Japan (Shonan Village Center), May 2019, through two virtual meetings that were held in November 2020 and May 2021. The on-line only meetings divided the contents of the usual in-person workshop between mission updates and working group updates. The November meeting was dedicated to mission calibration updates and the current status of the cross-calibration between NuSTAR, Swift, and NICER, which frequently join together in observations of bright transients, and a review of the XMM-Newton and Chandra cross-calibration. Results between \nustar\ and \swift\ overall show good agreement, but issues persist in the overlap region 3--5 keV for bright source with large dust scattering halos. The NICER cross-calibration is still progressing and evolving, while for the XMM-Newton and Chandra cross-calibration systematic differences both in the absolute flux and spectral shape determination still exists on different classes of sources. Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is an optimized stellarator with a 3-dimensional five-fold modular geometry. The plasma-wall-interaction (PWI) investigations in the complex 3D geometry of W7-X were carried out by in situ spectroscopic observations, exhaust gas analysis and post-mortem measurements on a large number of plasma-facing components extracted after campaigns. The investigations showed that the divertor strike line areas on the divertor targets appeared to be the major source of carbon impurities. After multistep erosion and deposition events, carbon was found to be deposited largely at the first wall components, with thick deposits of >1 μm on some baffle tiles, moderate deposits on toroidal closure tiles and thin deposits at the heat shield tiles and the outer wall panels. Some amount of the eroded carbon was pumped out via the vacuum pumps as volatile hydrocarbons and carbon oxides (CO, CO2) formed due to the chemical processes. Boron was introduced by three boronizations and one boron powder injection experiment. Thin boron-dominated layers were found on the inner heat shield and the outer wall panels, some boron was also found at the test divertor unit and in redeposited layers together with carbon. Local erosion/deposition and global migration processes were studied using field-line transport simulations, analytical estimations, 3D-WallDYN and ERO2.0 modeling in standard magnetic field configuration.

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for a -> gamma conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the x-ray refractive mass m_gamma to the axion search mass m_a. After the vacuum phase (2003-2004), which is optimal for m_a less than or similar to 0.02 eV, we used He-4 in 2005-2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02-0.39 eV and He-3 in 2009-2011 to scan from 0.39 to 1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to He-4 in 2012 to investigate a narrow m_a range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39-0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with He-4, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to g_a_gamma < 1.47 x 10^(-10) GeV^(-1) (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings. Since 2013, we have returned to the vacuum and aim for a significant increase in sensitivity.

The eclipsing supersoft X-ray binary CAL 87 has been observed with Chandra on August 13/14, 2001 for nearly 100 ksec, covering two full orbital cycles and three eclipses. The shape of the eclipse light curve derived from the zeroth-order photons indicates that the size of the X-ray emission region is about 1.5 solar radii. The ACIS/LETG spectrum is completely dominated by emission lines without any noticeable continuum. The brightest emission lines are significantly redshifted and double-peaked, suggestive of emanating in a 2000 km/s wind. We model the X-ray spectrum by a mixture of recombination and resonant scattering. This allows us to deduce the temperature and luminosity of the ionizing source to be kT = 50-100 eV and L_X = 5E37 erg/s., Comment: To appear in Proceedings of IAU Coll. 194 "Compact binaries in the Galaxy and beyond" (Rev. eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the core instrument on the Russian Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission which is scheduled for launch in late 2012. eROSITA is fully approved and funded by the German Space Agency DLR and the Max-Planck-Society. The design driving science is the detection of 50 - 100 thousands Clusters of Galaxies up to redshift z ~ 1.3 in order to study the large scale structure in the Universe and test cosmological models, especially Dark Energy. This will be accomplished by an all-sky survey lasting for four years plus a phase of pointed observations. eROSITA consists of seven Wolter-I telescope modules, each equipped with 54 Wolter-I shells having an outer diameter of 360 mm. This would provide and effective area at 1.5 keV of ~ 1500 cm2 and an on axis PSF HEW of 15" which would provide an effective angular resolution of 25"-30". In the focus of each mirror module, a fast frame-store pn-CCD will provide a field of view of 1 deg in diameter for an active FOV of ~ 0.83 deg^2. We report first results of a multifrequency campaign from radio to hard X-ray energies of the prominent gamma-ray blazar 3C 279, which was organised around an INTEGRAL ToO observation in January 2006, and triggered on its optical state. The variable blazar was observed at an intermediate optical state, and a well-covered multifrequency spectrum from radio to hard X-ray energies could be derived. The SED shows the typical two-hump shape, the signature of non-thermal synchrotron and inverse-Compton (IC) emission from a relativistic jet. By the significant exposure times of INTEGRAL and Chandra, the IC spectrum (0.3 - 100 keV) was most accurately measured, showing - for the first time - a possible bending. A comparison of this 2006 SED to the one observed in 2003, also centered on an INTEGRAL observation, during an optical low-state, reveals the surprising fact that - despite a significant change at the high-energy synchrotron emission (near-IR/optical/UV) - the rest of the SED remains unchanged. In particular, the low-energy IC emission (X- and hard X-ray energies) remains the same as in 2003, proving that the two emission components do not vary simultaneously, and provides strong constraints on the modelling of the overall emission of 3C 279., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; to be published in the Proc. of the 6th INTEGRAL workshop "The Obscured Universe" (Moscow, July 2-8, 2006), eds. We present phase resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the accreting millisecond pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Our R-band light curves exhibit a sinusoidal modulation, at close to the orbital period, which we initially attributed to X-ray heating of the irradiated face of the secondary star. However, further analysis reveals that the source of the modulation is more likely due to superhumps caused by a precessing accretion disc. Doppler tomography of a broad Halpha emission line reveals an emission ring, consistent with that expected from an accretion disc. Using the velocity of the emission ring as an estimate for the projected outer disc velocity, we constrain the maximum projected velocity of the secondary to be 200 km/s, placing a lower limit of 0.05 Msun on the secondary mass. For a 1.4 Msun primary, this implies that the orbital inclination is low, < 20 degrees. Utilizing the observed relationship between the secondary mass and orbital period in short period cataclysmic variables, we estimate the secondary mass to be ~0.085 Msun, which implies an upper limit of ~2.4 Msun for the primary mass., 8 pages, 6 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We report the results of two Chandra ACIS-S observations from February and August 2003 of the highly X-ray variable Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy RX J2217.9--5941. Observations spanning the time from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) through an ASCA observation in 1998 indicate apparently monotonically decreasing flux by a factor of 30. The Chandra observations reveal increased emission over that seen in ASCA, supporting a persistent variability rather than an X-ray outburst event. However, the cause of the strong X-ray variability remains unclear. Our Chandra observations confirm the steep soft X-ray spectrum in the 0.2-2.0 keV band found during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey observation (\ax=2.7). The spectral shape of the source appears to be variable with the spectrum becoming softer when the source becomes fainter. Best fitting models to the data include an absorbed broken power law, a blackbody plus power law, and a power law with partial covering absorption. The latter model suggests a variable partial-covering absorber in the line of sight which can explain in part the variability seen in RX J2217.9--5941. We suggest that there might be a population of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies which are at least at times highly absorbed., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, revised version

V4743 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2002 No. 3) was discovered on 20 September 2002. We obtained a 5ks ACIS-S spectrum in November 2002 and found that the nova was faint in X-rays. We then obtained a 25ks CHANDRA LETGS observation on 19 March 2003. By this time, it had evolved into the Super Soft X-ray phase exhibiting a continuous spectrum with deep absorption features. The light curve from the observation showed large amplitude oscillations with a period of 1325s (22min) followed by a decline in total count rate after ~13ks of observations. The count rate dropped from ~40cts/s to practically zero within ~6ks and stayed low for the rest of the observation (~6ks). The spectral hardness ratio changed from maxima to minima in correlation with the oscillations, and then became significantly softer during the decay. Strong H-like and He-like lines of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon were found in absorption during the bright phase, indicating temperatures between 1-2MK, but they were shifted in wavelength corresponding to a Doppler velocity of -2400km/s. The spectrum obtained after the decline in count rate showed emission lines of CVI, NVI, and NVII suggesting that we were seeing expanding gas ejected during the outburst, probably originating from CNO-cycled material. An XMM-Newton ToO observation, obtained on 4 April 2003 and a later LETGS observation from 18 July 2003 also showed oscillations, but with smaller amplitudes., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJL

On January 10 and 13, 2001, Venus was observed for the first time with an X-ray astronomy satellite. The observation, performed with the ACIS-I and LETG/ACIS-S instruments on Chandra, yielded data of high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution. Venus is clearly detected as a half-lit crescent, with considerable brightening on the sunward limb. The morphology agrees well with that expected from fluorescent scattering of solar X-rays in the planetary atmosphere. The radiation is observed at discrete energies, mainly at the O-K_alpha energy of 0.53 keV. Fluorescence radiation is also detected from C-K_alpha at 0.28 keV and, marginally, from N-K_alpha at 0.40 keV. An additional emission line is indicated at 0.29 keV, which might be the signature of the C 1s --> pi* transition in CO2 and CO. Evidence for temporal variability of the X-ray flux was found at the 2.6 sigma level, with fluctuations by factors of a few times indicated on time scales of minutes. All these findings are fully consistent with fluorescent scattering of solar X-rays. No other source of X-ray emission was detected, in particular none from charge exchange interactions between highly charged heavy solar wind ions and atmospheric neutrals, the dominant process for the X-ray emission of comets. In November 2001 we undertook a coordinated observing campaign to study the connection between X-ray and optical variability in the weak-line T Tauri star V410Tau. The observing plan included three 15 ksec observations with Chandra using the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer for Spectroscopy scheduled for different phases of the known 1.87 d starspot cycle. We present an analysis of ten cool stars (Algol, Capella, Procyon, Eps Eri, Alpha Cen A&B, UX Ari, AD Leo, YY Gem, and HR1099) observed with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This sample contains all cools stars observed with the LETGS presently available to us with integration times sufficiently long to warrant a meaningful spectral analysis. Our sample comprises inactive, moderately active, and hyperactive stars and samples the bulk part of activity levels encountered in coronal X-ray sources. We use the LETGS spectra to carry out density and temperature diagnostics with an emphasis on the H-like and the He-like ions. We find a correlation between line flux ratios of the Lyman-Alpha and He-like resonance lines with the mean X-ray surface flux. We determine densities using the He-like triplets. For active stars we find no significant deviations from the low-density limit for the ions of Ne, Mg, and Si, while the measured line ratios for the ions of C, N, and O do show evidence for departures from the low-density limit in the active stars, but not in the inactive stars. Best measurements can be made for the OVII triplet where we find significant deviations from the low-density limit for the stars Algol, Procyon, YY Gem, Eps Eri, and HR1099. We discuss the influence of radiation fields on the interpretation of the He-like triplet line ratios in the low-Z ions, which is relevant for Algol, and the influence of dielectronic satellite lines, which is relevant for Procyon. For the active stars YY Gem, Eps Eri, and HR1099 the low f/i ratios can unambiguously be attributed to high densties in the range 1--3 10^10 cm^-3 at OVII temperatures. We find our LETGS spectra to be an extremely useful tool for plasma diagnostics of stellar coronae., 17 pages, Latex2e, 12 figures. accepted for A&A under MS2627

The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) IRAS 13224-3809 has been observed with the CHANDRA High Resolution Camera (HRC-I) for 12 ksec on February, 2, 2000. The source was proposed for CHANDRA observations to precisely determine the X-ray centroid position and to investigate the timing properties of the most X-ray variable Seyfert galaxy. The position derived from CHANDRA confirms that the X-ray emission is associated with IRAS 13224-3809. The CHANDRA HRC-I light curve shows indications for a possible presence of a quasi-periodic oscillation. The strongest signal is found at 2500 sec. We report the results of the spectral and timing analysis of observations of the Vela pulsar with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum shows no statistically significant spectral lines in the observed 0.25--8.0 keV band. It consists of two distinct continuum components. The softer component can be modeled as either a magnetic hydrogen atmosphere spectrum with kT = 59 +- 3 eV, R = 15.5 +- 1.5 km, or a standard blackbody with kT = 129 +- 4 eV, R = 2.1 +- 0.2 km (the radii are for a distance of 250 pc). The harder component, modeled as a power-law spectrum, gives photon indices depending on the model adopted for the soft component: gamma = 1.5 +- 0.3 for the magnetic atmosphere soft component, and gamma = 2.7 +- 0.4 for the blackbody soft component. Timing analysis shows three peaks in the pulse profile, separated by about 0.3 in phase. Energy-resolved timing provides evidence for pulse profile variation with energy. We have observed the flare star YY Gem simultaneously with XMM-Newton and Chandra as part of a multi-wavelength campaign aiming at a study of variability related to magnetic activity in this short-period eclipsing binary. Here we report on the first results from the analysis of the X-ray spectrum. The vicinity of the star provides high enough S/N in the CCD cameras onboard XMM-Newton to allow for time-resolved spectroscopy. We report here optical observations during the September/October 1998 outburst of the black hole candidate XTE J1550-564. CCD photometry was obtained for the optical counterpart with the 0.9m Dutch telescope at La Silla since the onset of this event. We analysed 211 U, V and i frames, from Sep 10 to Oct 23. Stochastic flaring activity was observed on Sep 11-16, but no evidence for a superhump period, as seen in other soft X-ray transients, was found. An optical flare nearly simultaneous to an X-ray flare that occurred on Sep 21 was observed in the V-band. A reddened optical spectrum showed the typical emission lines corresponding to X-ray transients in outburst. From the interstellar absorption lines, we derive E(B-V) = 0.70 +/- 0.10 and suggest a distance of about 2.5 kpc. In such case, M_{B} = +7 mag. for the progenitor, which is consistent with the spectral type of a low-mass K0-K5 main-sequence companion., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters (4 pages, 4 figures)

We report first results of a multifrequency campaign from radio to hard X-ray energies of the prominent gamma-ray blazar 3C 279 during the first year of the INTEGRAL mission. The variable blazar was found at a low activity level, but was detected by all participating instruments. Subsequently a multifrequency spectrum could be compiled. The individual measurements as well as the compiled multifrequency spectrum are presented. We present the results of the first multi-scale N-body+hydrodynamical simulations of merging galaxies containing central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and having a spatial resolution of only a few parsecs. Strong gas inflows associated with equal-mass mergers produce non-axisymmetric nuclear disks with masses of order 109 M⊙, resolved by about 106 SPH particles. Such disks have sizes of several hundred parsecs but most of their mass is concentrated within less than 50 pc. We find that a close pair of supermassive black holes forms after the merger, and their relative distance then shrinks further owing to dynamical friction against the predominantly gaseous background. The orbits of the two black holes decay down to the minimum resolvable scale in a few million years after the merger for an ambient gas temperature and density typical of a region undergoing a starburst. The conditions necessary for the eventual coalescence of the two holes as a result of gravitational radiation emission appear to arise naturally from the merging of two equal-mass galaxies whose structure and orbits are consistent with the predictions of the LCDM model. Our findings have important implications for planned gravitational wave detection experiments such as LISA. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
