Health in the Presence of the Ancestors: African Healers between Acceptance and Denial: A Case Study from South Africa. Health and well-being for all is the ambitious aim of the third of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). The no less ambitious definition of health of the World Health Organization (WHO) defines that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. While in biomedical contexts treatment concentrates on physical healing, in the South African context the idea of healing and well-being subsumes a combination of physical, mental and social treatment and includes the ancestors and medicinal plants as an important category in the healing process. The ancestors in particular are representatives of the social past that reaches into the present. Healing as such has a multifaceted dimension even beyond the definition of health as proposed by the WHO.

This book deals with the values of medicinal plants and associated knowledge(s) in the field of bioprospecting in post-apartheid South Africa. Bioprospecting, the use of genetic or biological resources for commercial purposes, is a profit-oriented enterprise facing new challenges with the rise of human rights and biodiversity politics. This new situation has led to claims for political leverage made by indigenous communities, as well as to claims for national and local cultural identity and heritage. The picture presented here contributes to the widely discussed yet so far unresolved question of how to appropriately share benefits, and how to protect indigenous knowledge in this field.

The aim of this article is to describe what needs to be considered in implementing care practices, in this case an integrative care program consisting of anthroposophic treatments, in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a teaching hospital.We used a pediatric oncology department to implement an integrative care program. We conducted a qualitative study including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with parents, nurses, doctors, and therapists. Data analysis was based on a grounded theory approach and focused on the status quo of care in the ICU.The following factors needed to be considered: the structure of the ICU, communication and information dissemination, and time constraints. This led to the following components of the integrative care program: (1) a training plan in anthroposophic treatments for all nurses that was conducted by 2 trained anthroposophic nurses, and (2) the introduction of an integrative shift that was on top of regular care at the ICU and focused on delivery of integrative care to patients.To add new care components to an ICU, the existing context has to be considered. Time constraints and high workload are factors that need to be recognized. In this particular context, a highly flexible program was the solution.Ziel: Ziel dieses Artikels ist es zu beschreiben, welche Bedingungen für die Implementierung eines Integrativen Pflegeprogramms auf einer kinderonkologischen Intensivstation einer Universitätsklinik notwendig sind. Metho­den: Auf einer kinderonkologischen Station wurde ein Integratives Pflegeprogramm implementiert. Zur Entwicklung des Programms wurde eine qualitative Studie mit teilnehmender Beobachtung und halb-strukturierten Interviews mit Eltern, Krankenschwestern, Ärzten und Therapeuten durchgeführt. Die Datenanalyse erfolgte mit Hilfe von Grounded Theory und konzentrierte sich auf die Analyse des Status quo der Station. Ergebnisse: Die folgenden Faktoren wurden bei der Entwicklung des Programms berücksichtigt: die Struktur der Intensivstation, Kommunikation und Informationsverbreitung, sowie zeitliche Einschränkungen. Daraus resultierten die folgenden Komponenten des Integrativen Pflegeprogramms: (1) ein Trainingsplan zur Vermittlung von pflegerischen Anwendungen der anthroposophischen Medizin für alle Krankenschwestern, welcher von zwei in anthroposophischer Pflege ausgebildeten Schwestern trainiert wurde, und (2) die Einführung einer Integrativen Schicht, die zusätzlich zu dem regulären Schichtensystem eingeführt wurde, um integrative Pflege durchzuführen. Schlussfolgerung: Folgende Kontextfaktoren sollten bei der Einführung eines Integrativen Pflegeprogramms in einem Universitätsklinikum mit einbezogen werden: zeitliche Einschränkungen und starke Arbeitsbelastung des Pflegeteams. Auf der hier untersuchten kinderonkologischen Station war die Einführung eines flexiblen Programms die Lösung.

Purpose For some years now, a programme for the use of integrative care in paediatric oncology has been established in a German university hospital and offers patients and parents complementary treatment options. According to their medical condition and wishes. A variety of external applications such as medical wraps, warm oil compresses and rhythmic embrocations are offered. This article analyses how patients and parents perceived and experienced the integrative care program. Methods In this qualitative study, data consists of field notes conducted through participant observation, informal conversations and interviews with parents (n = 25) during the implementation phase of the program. Data was analysed on basis of thematic analysis and organized with the analysis software MAXQDA. Results Parents and families intuitively developed strategies for dealing with crisis situations such as childhood cancer. In addition, many of the families brought with them a wealth of experience in complementary medicine. Parents perceived the integrative care treatments as soothing, relaxing and pain-relieving for their child. Patients could relax and side effects of chemotherapy were alleviated. However, children, who undergoing chemotherapy were not always open for physical touch and thus sometimes also rejected the treatments sometimes. Conclusion The analysed integrative care programme is perceived as a strong patient and family-centred approach of support during the oncological paediatric treatment. From a salutogenetic viewpoint, this program aims to strengthen the dimension of manageability within the concept of sense of coherence. Parents are given supportive means to manage side effects and ease their child’s suffering, through touch and attention that can be very beneficial.

Fieldwork comprises of moments when researchers’ institutional, social, and political ascriptions shift, and their social identities and subjectivities conflict, collide, or conflate. These conditions often point to the needs for, or result from, oscillating identifications that compel both researchers and interlocutors to negotiate existing or emerging power relations. A sustained self-reflection of one’s changing and conflicting roles as field researcher can assist ethnographers in coping with different expectations and ascribed responsibilities, and contributes to nuanced analysis, interpretation, and representation of the studied phenomena.

Purpose Purpose of this paper is to describe the project design for the development of a context-specific and patient-focused integrative care programme for an intensive care unit for paediatric oncology to ease the strain of the treatments for patients and their families. Integrative care interventions based on anthroposophical medicine such as wraps, compresses and rhythmic body oiling can be used to ease typical side effects such as nausea, pain and agitation. Methods Conduct of a literature research on existing integrative care programmes in medical hospitals and biomedical settings and the identification of appropriate methods to achieve the research aim. Results A project design was developed which can be used as a basis for developing, introducing and evaluating an integrative care programme for a paediatric oncological intensive care unit in a German university hospital. A qualitative study design was chosen to develop this programme. This included participant observations and interviews with all stakeholders at the respective oncology ward as well as in existing oncology wards that work with an integrative care programme. The primary emphasis was on the criteria appropriateness for the specific setting, sustainability and financial viability as well as on the development of an appropriate evaluation model. Conclusions When developing an integrative care programme for use in the specific setting of a paediatric oncology ward and selecting the appropriate interventions for inclusion in the programme, particular attention should be paid to the needs of the patients as well as to the practicability for the nursing staff, particularly with regard to resources such as time and personnel. Both the nursing team and nursing management should be actively involved in the project design from the outset. In the evaluation particular importance is attached to feasibility. The challenge for the economic evaluation is to create a robust database for negotiation of financing possibilities.

The Congress will take place in association with a number of national and international organizations from North America and other continents. Consequently, the congress will provide the most comprehensive global forum and perspective in the field of Complementary and Integrative Medicine in 2017. The congress goal is reflected in its tag line: The Future of Comprehensive Patient Care - Strengthening the Alliance of Researchers, Educators and Providers. We believe that by bringing together researchers, educators and providers, who are addressing various aspects of Integrative Medicine and health, we can build on the evidence obtained through research to inform clinical education and practice and thereby create a better platform for comprehensive patient care. The main themes of the Congress are: Clinical care: The practice of Integrative Medicine should be based on distinct definitions, should be informed by evidence and evolve from guidelines that are developed by experts from conventional and complementary medicine. Education: Academic leaders and health officials have called for future clinicians to possess the knowledge and skills to understand how Integrative Medicine can be incorporated into conventional care to improve the health of the public. Therefore, it is essential to share best practices in how to create robust curricular opportunities for medical students to experience systematic teaching of the principles, strengths and limitations of Integrative Medicine. Research: Within this Congress scientists will showcase the highest quality research worldwide in this field and will provide the state-of-the-science evidence base through plenary lectures, symposia and abstract presentations. Traditional healing systems (THS): Traditional healing practices and practitioners are an important and often underestimated part of health care. THS is found in almost every country in the world and the demand for its services is increasing. Research contributing to evidence informed decision making is imperative to develop a cohesive and integrative approach to health care that allows governments, health care practitioners and, most importantly, those who use health care services, to access THS in a safe, respectful, cost-efficient and effective manner. Arts and medicine: For the first time at a research congress, this theme will explore the important contributions of the arts (music, visual arts, dancing, etc,) for integrative therapeutic interventions to achieve optimal health and healing. Given the ambitious scope of this worldwide international congress, the four authors of the present editorial serve as co-presidents and they are guided by the International Organizing Committee consisting of many experts from around the world including Myeong S. Lee, Jianping Liu, Kenji Watanabe (from Far East Asia), Renee Street (Africa), Amie. Steel (Australia), Paulo Arturo Caceres Guido, Chin An Lin (South America), Heather Boon, Josephine Briggs, John Weeks (North America) and Abdullah Al-Bedah, Mohamed Khalil, Elad Schiff (Middle East and Israel). The programming for each of the five themes is directed by WCIMH 2017 theme subcommittees involving some of the most highly regarded clinicians, educators and researchers in the world in this field (in alphabetic order): Linda Balneaves, Lesley Braun, Eva Bojner Horwitz, Gustav Dobos, Jeffery Dusik, David Eisenberg, Iva Fattorini, Eckhart G. We are also pleased to announce that the opening welcome will include the Director General for the World Health Organization, Dr Margaret Chan (on video). All plenary speakers are internationally recognized experts in the field of Complementary and Integrative Medicine such as Josephine B Briggs (US) and Merlin Willcox (UK) as keynote speakers for the theme traditional healing systems; Klaus Linde (Ger) and Michael Moore (UK) for the research theme; Lisa M Wong (US) and Tores Theorell (Sweden) will address the theme of arts and medicine; Darong Wu (China) and Jeffery A Dusek (US) are presenting on the theme of clinical care; and Aviad Haramati and David Eisenberg (both US) will close the Congress with presentations on education. In addition, more than 100 oral presentations in over 40 parallel sessions will be in the program to provide newly emerging data from recent research projects, experiences from new treatment aspects in clinical care, descriptions of new models of education in medicine, information about integration of traditional healing systems in health care systems and new aspects on the integration of arts in medicine. In addition, more than 400 posters will be presented in guided poster sessions during the three days of the Congress. To translate the congress goals and objectives into a tangible action for the field, a Berlin Agreement is being developed. With the title ‘Social and Self-responsibility in practicing and fostering Integrate Health and Medicine Globally,’ this document is meant to help shape the future of comprehensive patient care in Integrative Medicine, and addresses the responsibilities of all participants, including patients and citizens, physicians and all colleagues working in the healthcare system. The Berlin Agreement has been developed by the WCIMH 2017 congress presidents and the International Organizing Committee to create a document for further distribution to the scientific and clinical community and to health care stakeholders, decision makers, and politicians. We anticipate having the final version of the Berlin Agreement endorsed by a number of organizations prior to the Congress and also soliciting the support of congress at the WCIMH 2017 in Berlin. Our hope is that this document will provide an important impetus for further engagement world-wide after the Congress has concluded. Immediately before the start of WCIMH 2017 on Wednesday May 3rd 2017 there will be several high-quality pre-conference workshops covering all congress topics. Reflecting the political situation in recent years, especially in Europe, we have arranged for a unique half-day workshop on the topic: “Refugees with Chronic Diseases between the Middle-East and Europe: The Role of Traditional and Integrative Medicine in Bridging Gaps”, The speakers are all from the Middle East and Europe and will address how Integrative Medicine may serve as an important element to overcome the problematic health situation of refugees around the world. We are convinced that the field of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, including traditional healing systems and medicine and the arts, will benefit from The 2017 World Congress on Integrative Medicine & Health—a preeminent scientific international forum that is focused on highlighting advances in these thematic areas. We invite all practitioners, educators and researchers in the field of Integrative Medicine to come together, participate and engage together to make this Congress an exciting meeting for the successful advancement of Integrative Medicine across the globe.
