1. An updated census of the young stellar population in Corona-Australis

Abstract

Corona-Australis is one of the nearest regions to the Sun with active star formation, but despite the close proximity (d~150 pc) our current picture of this starburst is not yet complete. Our team has recently revised the census of Corona-Australis stars using Gaia- DR2 data and discovered a distributed population of young stars located in the Galactic north of the dark clouds that is twice as numerous as the historically known stellar population concentrated around the densest cores of the region. Here, we build on the current census of stars in this region by combining the Gaia-EDR3 catalogue with astrometric and photometric ground-based data delivered by the Cosmic-DANCe project. We use our new sample of members and high-resolution spectroscopy to revisit the structure and kinematics of the Corona-Australis star-forming region., {"references":["Blanco-Cuaresma et al. 2. Discovery of a rich population of free-floating planets in the Upper Scorpius association

Abstract

The first free-floating planets were discovered at the turn of the century, but the lack of large samples prevents us from better understanding their origin and properties. I will present the discovery of around a hundred free-floating planets, members of the Upper Scorpius OB association and the Ophiuchus star-forming region. These objects were identified using proper motions and photometry. We have carried out a spectroscopic campaign to confirm their youth and ultra-cool nature. This constitutes the largest homogeneous sample of free-floating planets to date, which enables many follow-up studies, such as their origin and composition.

Abstract

This report is the result of a joint discussion between the Rubin and Euclid scientific communities. The work presented in this report was focused on designing and recommending an initial set of Derived Data products (DDPs) that could realize the science goals enabled by joint processing. All interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders were invited to contribute via an online discussion forum and a series of virtual meetings. 4. Protoplanetary disk lifetimes and implications for the population of giant planets

Abstract

The lifetime of protoplanetary disks sets a limit to the time available for planet formation, and thus plays a crucial role in the observed populations of exoplanets. This lifetime is measured by examining the percentage of disk-bearing systems in star-forming regions with different ages, but most studies have focused on individual regions and could suffer from biases or contamination issues. We have performed the largest and most homogeneous compilation of Spectral Energy Distributions of young stars in nearby associations, including over 2300 sources in 22 associations. The unprecedented size of our sample, together with a careful treatment of the different sensitivities and biases, allowed us to derive the most precise estimate of disk lifetimes up to date. Moreover, we are also able to investigate the impact of stellar mass on the dispersal of protoplanetary disks, finding that disks around massive stars disappear significantly faster. Such a difference may have important consequences for the population of giant planets and, in particular, for the occurrence of hot-Jupiters around high-mass stars.

Abstract

We report on Submillimeter Array observations of the 870 micron continuum and CO(3-2), 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) line emission of a faint object, SMM2E, near the driving source of the HH797 outflow in the IC348 cluster. The continuum emission shows an unresolved source for which we estimate a mass of gas and dust of 30 Mjup, and the CO(3-2) line reveals a compact bipolar outflow centred on SMM2E, and barely seen also in 13CO(2-1). In addition, C18O(2-1) emission reveals hints of a possible rotating envelope/disk perpendicular to the outflow, for which we infer a dynamical mass of ~16 Mjup. In order to further constrain the accreted mass of the object, we gathered data from Spitzer, Herschel, and new and archive submillimetre observations, and built the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). The SED can be fitted with one single modified black-body from 70 micron down to 2.1 cm, using a dust temperature of ~24 K, a dust emissivity index of 0.8, and an envelope mass of ~35 Mjup. The bolometric luminosity is 0.10 Lsun, and the bolometric temperature is 35 K. Thus, SMM2E is comparable to the known Class 0 objects in the stellar domain. An estimate of the final mass indicates that SMM2E will most likely remain substellar, and the SMM2E outflow force matches the trend with luminosity known for young stellar objects. Thus, SMM2E constitutes an excellent example of a Class 0 proto-brown dwarf candidate which forms as a scaled-down version of low-mass stars. Abstract

In the context of the ESA M5 (medium mission) call we proposed a new satellite mission, Theia, based on relative astrometry and extreme precision to study the motion of very faint objects in the Universe. Theia is primarily designed to study the local dark matter properties, the existence of Earth-like exoplanets in our nearest star systems and the physics of compact objects. Furthermore, about 15 $\%$ of the mission time was dedicated to an open observatory for the wider community to propose complementary science cases. With its unique metrology system and "point and stare" strategy, Theia's precision would have reached the sub micro-arcsecond level. This is about 1000 times better than ESA/Gaia's accuracy for the brightest objects and represents a factor 10-30 improvement for the faintest stars (depending on the exact observational program). In the version submitted to ESA, we proposed an optical (350-1000nm) on-axis TMA telescope. Due to ESA Technology readiness level, the camera's focal plane would have been made of CCD detectors but we anticipated an upgrade with CMOS detectors.
