Background Childhood maltreatment can result in lifelong psychological and physical sequelae, including coronary artery disease (CAD). Mechanisms leading to increased risk of illness may involve emotional dysregulation and shortened leukocyte telomere length (LTL). Methods To evaluate whether (1) childhood maltreatment is associated with shorter LTL among older adults with CAD or other chronic illnesses; (2) sex and/or CAD status influence these results; and (3) symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress moderate or mediate the association between childhood maltreatment and LTL, men and women (N = 1247; aged 65 ± 7.2 years) with and without CAD completed validated questionnaires on childhood maltreatment, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress. LTL was measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Analyses included bivariate correlations, hierarchical regressions, and moderation/mediation analyses, controlling for sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. Results Childhood maltreatment was associated with significantly shorter LTL (r = −0.059, p = 0.038, b = −0.016, p = 0.005). This relation was not moderated by depression, anxiety, nor perceived stress, though there was mitigated evidence for absence of a maltreatment-LTL relation in men with CAD. Stress perception (but not anxiety or depression) partially mediated the relation between childhood maltreatment and LTL [Indirect effect, b = −0.0041, s.e. = 0.002, 95% CI (−0.0085 to −0.0002)]. Conclusions Childhood maltreatment was associated with accelerated biological aging independently of patient characteristics. Emotional dysregulation resulting in chronic stress may contribute to this process. Whether stress management or other interventions may help prevent or slow premature aging in those who have suffered maltreatment requires study.

Slow-flow vascular malformations (VMs), especially those with venous components, can be complicated by localized intravascular coagulopathy (LIC), responsible for pain and impaired quality of life. Several studies have shown the effectiveness of mTOR inhibitors (especially sirolimus) on slow-flow VMs but its effect on coagulation has been poorly studied, especially in children. Our study shows that venous and combined VMs are associated with coagulation abnormalities and provides novel evidence that sirolimus improves coagulopathy in venous malformations. However we did not clearly evidence predictive biomarkers of response to sirolimus but this is the first study attempting to highlight predictive markers of response to sirolimus.

A new planthoppers genus and species of CixiidaeOecleini, Coframalaxius bletteryigen. nov. sp. nov. newly discovered in a cave near Nice in southern France, is described. Molecular analysis confirms the morphology-based classification of Coframalaxius as sister to Trigonocranus within the Oecleni. Several morphological characters are further discussed. A double-grasping coxo-femoral and femoro-tibial system is regarded as apomorphic for the oecline taxa and would allow the nymph to firmly grab the roots and rootlets on which it feeds or use to progress in the soil. Wing vein patterns are discussed in the Cixiidae: 1) for the forewings, Oecleini belong to the trifid type of the anterior MP branch, leading to the reinterpretation of some recently described Neotropical species, 2) for the hindwing, four connection types (U-, V-, Y- and I-types) between MP and CuA are described. Oecleini belongs to I-type with a complete fusion of MP3+4 with CuA1. Although the area where the cave is located is well-studied with respect to its regularly sampled epigean fauna for many years, the taxon is new to science, highlighting its probable completely hypogean life cycle and leading to consider Coframalaxius bletteryi as an eutroglophile species.

Le Sénégal connaît une demande croissante en travail saisonnier dans le secteur agricole. Dans le cadre de l'agriculture familiale, ce phénomène résulte d'une différenciation socioéconomique au sein de l'agriculture familiale induite par des décennies de soutien de l'État à des modèles productifs agricoles particuliers. Cet article analyse le travail saisonnier à partir de l'expérience des salariés agricoles, socialement et politiquement invisibilisés, pour comprendre dans quelle mesure cette activité façonne leur trajectoire biographique, contribue à leurs moyens d'existence et à ceux de leur famille. À partir d'un matériau collecté en 2018 et 2019 dans les régions du delta du fleuve Sénégal et des Niayes, nous montrons que les conditions de travail précaires de cette main-d'oeuvre saisonnière, exclusivement masculine dans les zones étudiées, limitent les moyens d'existence et les possibilités d'accumulation ainsi que les capacités d'action collective de ces travailleurs.

This qualitative exploratory study examined the language/literacy tasks performed by elementary students from six elementary French Immersion (FI) classrooms. Various literacy tasks were performed as students rotated through different literacy centres/stations which had been pre-planned by their teachers. Specifically, researchers investigated students’ oral production and opportunities for extended oral output when working at independent learning centres/stations in order to identify key principles for creating literacy-enhancing tasks suitable for developing language literacy skills within second language (L2) contexts. Data were collected through classroom observations ( n = 23) to identify the types of literacy/language tasks proposed to L2 students, the nature of communicative functions, the targeted learning outcomes, and principles of effective L2 learning tasks. Results demonstrate the importance of adapting pedagogical practices, such as literacy centres/stations, borrowed from the first language teaching contexts to maximize L2 literacy/language learning and meet the specific needs of FI students. Results also highlighted the importance of ongoing professional learning opportunities for FI teachers specific to their L2 teaching contexts. Researchers propose principles for creating literacy/language tasks that promote oral language learning in FI contexts.

International audience; In the era of immune checkpoint inhibitors, understanding the metastatic microenvironment of proficient mismatch repair/microsatellite stable (pMMR/MSS) colorectal cancer (CRC) is of paramount importance to both prognostication and the development of more effective novel therapies. In this study, primary and paired metastasis tissue samples were collected from patients with resectable metastatic CRC treated with adjuvant FOLFOX or peri-operative chemotherapy in the MIROX phase III prospective study. In total, 74 cancer tissues were stained for CD3, CD8, Forkhead box protein 3 (FOXP3), programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1, invasive front, stromal, intra-epithelial compartments), and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1, tumor, immune cells). The immune profiling of primary CRC had a limited value to predict the immune context of paired metastases for all markers but CD3+. The expression of CD8 and PD-L1 was higher in metastases after neoadjuvant FOLFOX. In metastases, both CD3 T cells at the invasive front and PD-L1 expressions on immune cells were predictive of better disease-free survival. These results show that the effect of FOLFOX on modifying the immune microenvironment in resected CRC metastases and measurement of PD-L1 expression and tumor-infiltrating CD8 T cells in pMMR/MSS metastatic tissue samples could improve treatment strategies of metastatic CRC patients.

Macrophages are immune cells that originate from embryogenesis or from the differentiation of monocytes. They can adopt numerous phenotypes depending on their origin, tissue distribution and in response to different stimuli and tissue environment. Thus, in vivo, macrophages are endowed with a continuum of phenotypes that are rarely strictly pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory and exhibit a broad expression profile that sweeps over the whole polarization spectrum. Schematically, three main macrophage subpopulations coexist in human tissues: naïve macrophages also called M0, pro-inflammatory macrophages referred as M1 macrophages, and anti-inflammatory macrophages also known as M2 macrophages. Naïve macrophages display phagocytic functions, recognize pathogenic agents, and rapidly undergo polarization towards pro or anti-inflammatory macrophages to acquire their full panel of functions. Pro-inflammatory macrophages are widely involved in inflammatory response, during which they exert anti-microbial and anti-tumoral functions. By contrast, anti-inflammatory macrophages are implicated in the resolution of inflammation, the phagocytosis of cell debris and tissue reparation following injuries. Macrophages also play important deleterious or beneficial roles in the initiation and progression of different pathophysiological settings including solid and hematopoietic cancers. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the generation, activation and polarization of macrophages is a prerequisite for the development of new therapeutic strategies to modulate macrophages functions in pathological situations.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted human resource gaps and physician shortages in healthcare systems in New Brunswick (NB), as evidenced by multiple healthcare service interruptions. In addition, the New Brunswick Health Council gathered data from citizens on the type of primary care models (i.e. physicians in solo practice, physicians in collaborative practice, and collaborative practice with physicians and nurse practitioners) they use as their usual place of care. To add to their survey’s findings, our study aims to see how these different primary care models were associated with job satisfaction as reported by primary care providers. Methods In total, 120 primary care providers responded to an online survey about their primary care models and job satisfaction levels. We used IBM’s “SPSS Statistics” software to run Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests to compare job satisfaction levels between variable groups to determine if there were statistically significant variations. Results Overall, 77% of participants declared being satisfied at work. The reported job satisfaction levels did not appear to be influenced by the primary care model. Participants reported similar job satisfaction levels regardless of if they practiced alone or in collaboration. Although 50% of primary care providers reported having symptoms of burnout and experienced a decline in job satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic, the primary care model was not associated with these experiences. Therefore, participants who reported burnout or a decline in job satisfaction were similar in all primary care models. Our study’s results suggest that the autonomy to choose a preferred model was important, since 45.8% of participants reported choosing their primary care models, based on preference. Proximity to family and friends and balancing work and family emerged as critical factors that influence choosing a job and staying in that job. Conclusion Primary care providers’ staffing recruitment and retention strategies should include the factors reported as determinants in our study. Primary care models do not appear to influence job satisfaction levels, although having the autonomy to choose a preferred model was reported as highly important. Consequently, it may be counterproductive to impose specific primary care models if one aims to prioritize primary care providers’ job satisfaction and wellness.

OBJECTIVES The antiarrhythmic effects of dexmedetomidine (DEX) have been suggested, but there are controversial reports on the effectiveness of intraoperative use of DEX to reduce the incidence of postoperative tachyarrhythmia (POT). METHODS From a local European Congenital Heart Surgery Association database, we included patients operated for congenital heart diseases under cardiopulmonary bypass within a 5-year period (2017–2021), during which intraoperative use of high dose of DEX (1–1.4 µg/kg/h) was implemented. A doubly robust matching estimation of the causal effect of DEX on the incidence of POT was conducted. We combined a multimodal estimation model in patients not exposed to DEX (disease risk score) as well as a regression analysis in a matched cohort for patients exposured to DEX. RESULTS From a cohort of 593 surgeries (514 patients) occurring during the study period, doubly matched analysis consisted of the analysis of 426 surgeries conducted under DEX or not (213 per group). The probability of developing POT in patients exposed to DEX was 6.6% (95% confidence interval 0.032–0.099) vs 14.5% (95% confidence interval 0.098–0.193) in the group of patients not exposed to DEX. The doubly robust matched estimation method showed a mean reduction of 8.8% (95% confidence interval −0.137 to −0.023) of POT when DEX is used for intraoperative anaesthesia. CONCLUSIONS The use of high doses of DEX during anaesthesia for congenital heart surgery in neonates and infants is associated with a moderate but significant reduction of POT.

El control territorial es un fenómeno que forma parte del cotidiano de las personas y es de interés para diferentes áreas del saber. No obstante, en esta oportunidad se le estudia desde la perspectiva de la Geografía, la Ciencia Política y el Derecho, como un recurso de dominación política.Su abordaje es fundamentalmente teórico. Se discute la importancia del territorio para la sociedad, tanto como producto y factor de poder, como ámbito y recurso de las relaciones sociales; la naturaleza y esencia del control territorial en tanto que recurso de dominación; sus mecanismos de implementación, desde la perspectiva de sus características y alcances, y finalmente, las limitaciones al poder del Estado como único actor con la potestad legítima de ejercerlo. Lo anterior permite proponer una aproximación a su ‘deber ser’ teórico-principista como recurso de dominación política, que servirá como referencia para futuros análisis empíricos del fenómeno. The territorial control is part of people’s daily lives and a case of study around different sciences. Here it is studied from the Geography, Political Science and Law perspective, as a resource of political domination. In this article, the territorial control is studied from a theoretical perspective. First, the territory is analyzed, as a product and a factor of power, and as a field and a resource of social relations; then, the territorial control is described from the perspective of its nature and essence as a resource of domination. Next, the territorial control mechanisms and their scope are described, and finally, the limitations to the power of the State as the only actor with the legitimate power to exercise it are analyzed. Summary Background Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia can have increased inflammation and elevated cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, which might be deleterious. Thus, sarilumab, a high-affinity anti-IL-6 receptor antibody, might improve the outcome of patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Methods We did a multicentric, open-label, Bayesian randomised, adaptive, phase 2/3 clinical trial, nested within the CORIMUNO-19 cohort, to test a superiority hypothesis. Patients 18 years or older hospitalised with COVID-19 in six French centres, requiring at least 3L/min of oxygen but without ventilation assistance and a WHO Clinical Progression Scale [CPS] score of 5 were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) via a web-based system, according to a randomisation list stratified on centre and with blocks randomly selected among 2 and 4, to receive usual care plus 400 mg of sarilumab intravenously on day 1 and on day 3 if clinically indicated (sarilumab group) or usual care alone (usual care group). Primary outcomes were the proportion of patients with WHO-CPS scores greater than 5 on the 10-point scale on day 4 and survival without invasive or non-invasive ventilation at day 14. This completed trial is closed to new participants and is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , NCT04324073 . Findings 165 patients were recruited from March 27 to April 6, 2020, and 148 patients were randomised (68 patients to the sarilumab group and 80 to the usual care group) and followed up for 90 days. Median age was 61·7 years [IQR 53·0–71·1] in the sarilumab group and 62·8 years [56·0–71·7] in the usual care group. In the sarilumab group 49 (72%) of 68 were men and in the usual care group 59 (78%) of 76 were men. Four patients in the usual care group withdrew consent and were not analysed. 18 (26%) of 68 patients in the sarilumab group had a WHO-CPS score greater than 5 at day 4 versus 20 (26%) of 76 in the usual care group (median posterior absolute risk difference 0·2%; 90% credible interval [CrI] −11·7 to 12·2), with a posterior probability of absolute risk difference greater than 0 of 48·9%. At day 14, 25 (37%) patients in the sarilumab and 26 (34%) patients in the usual care group needed ventilation or died, (median posterior hazard ratio [HR] 1·10; 90% CrI 0·69–1·74) with a posterior probability HR greater than 1 of 37·4%. Serious adverse events occurred in 27 (40%) patients in the sarilumab group and 28 (37%) patients in the usual care group (p=0·73). Interpretation Sarilumab treatment did not improve early outcomes in patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 pneumonia. A new monospecific genus of flatid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Flatidae), Makaya gen. nov., is described for Makaya volontany sp. nov. (type species) from the island of Madagascar. Habitus, male and female external and internal genital structures of the new species are illustrated and compared with related taxa. Makaya volontany is endemic to Madagascar where it is currently known from different types of dry forests in the western part of the island.

Environmental flows are generally characterized by complex bed morphology and high current speeds. Such configurations favor the formation of vortex structures that strongly affect hydrody-namics and sediment transport. Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) enables investigation of the dynam-ics of the largest turbulence scales and, thanks to enhanced calculation resources, has now become applicable for simulating environmental flows. In this paper, a LES approach is developed in a CFD code (TELEMAC-3D), which was originally developed to simulate free surface flows using RANS methods. The present developments involve implementing subgrid models, boundary con-ditions and numerical schemes suitable for LES. The LES version of TELEMAC-3D was validated by comparing results on the model with experimental data for flow past a cylinder. Then, the model was applied to a test case representing flow over dunes. After validating the hydrodynamics, the model was used to assess the bottom shear stress, using both a RANS and a LES approach. Com-parison highlighted the potential contribution of LES to investigating the hydrodynamic forces acting on the bottom.

Resume Objet L’objectif de cette etude etait d’evaluer la morbidite des arthrodeses lombaires par voie anterieure (ALIF) utilisant un implant intervertebral en tantale. Ce materiau metallique extremement poreux possede une osteointegration, une osteoinduction, une osteoconduction et une stabilite primaire superieure aux autres materiaux utilises plus habituellement (polyetherethercetone PEEK, titane). La morbidite perioperatoire, les resultats fonctionnels a court terme (2 ans) et l’impaction radiographique des implants ont egalement ete analyses. Methodes Cette etude retrospective monocentrique a porte sur 94 patients operes, entre 2014 et 2017, pour une discopathie degenerative (75 %), un spondylolisthesis degeneratif (3 %) ou un spondylolisthesis par lyse isthmique (22 %). Soixante-cinq patients (69 %) ont ete operes par ALIF isolee (« stand-alone »), 24 (26 %) avec association d’une osteosynthese anterieure et 5 (5 %) avec une osteosynthese posterieure associee. Une courbe de survie a ete etablie selon Kaplan–Meier avec, comme critere principal d’echec, la reprise chirurgicale. Les complications perioperatoires ont ete recensees. L’evaluation clinique au dernier recul utilisait une echelle visuelle analogique radiculaire (EVA-R), lombaire (EVA-L) et le score d’Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Les impactions, evaluees sur les radiographies, ont ete reparties en 2 groupes en fonction de la severite afin d’etablir des facteurs de risques (FDR). Resultats L’objectif principal montre un taux de survie a 2 ans de 94 % (IC 95 % [0,88 ; 0,99]). Deux patients ont ete repris precocement pour une impaction et 4 patients tardivement pour une pseudarthrodese. Le taux de complications perioperatoire etait de 8,5 %, de cause essentiellement vasculaire. Au recul moyen de 33 mois (24–59), les resultats cliniques etaient significativement ameliores et le taux d’impaction etait de 36 % en postoperatoire immediat (POI) et de 47 % a un an. Conclusion L’ALIF utilisant un implant intervertebral en tantale est une technique fiable, reproductible et a faible morbidite. Elle s’accompagne, neanmoins, d’un taux important d’impactions immediates et secondaires, mais sans retentissement sur les resultats cliniques a court terme. Niveau de preuve IV.

Objectives Our aim was to provide an overview of the practices of French general dentists (GDs) and specialists (SDs) concerning the management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), rheumatic inflammatory diseases (IRDs), and vasculitis on biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), conventional DMARDs, or immunosuppressants (ISs). Materials and Methods We asked the members of French scientific societies and colleges of dentistry teachers to distribute an online survey over three months. Result In total, 105 practitioners fully completed the survey. SDs more frequently performed invasive surgical procedures and were more aware of the recommendations of learned societies than GDs. They encountered more post-operative complications for patients on bDMARDs. For both SDs and GDs, most patients were managed without stopping treatment and pre- and postoperative antibiotics were prescribed to more than 75% of patients. When medical treatment was stopped, the decision was made by the prescribing physician. Conclusion Complications were reported more frequently by SDs when highly invasive procedures were performed on patients under active drug therapy. Certain common procedures, such as scaling and root planing, appear to be safe, regardless of treatment management. However, adapted guidelines for the practice of dentistry are needed to standardize the management of patients on bDMARDS, conventional DMARDs, or ISs. Clinical Relevance: French dentists perform a wide range of oral procedures on patients on bDMARDS, conventional DMARDs, or ISs under antibiotic coverage and antiseptic mouthwashes. SDs reported more postoperative complications after extensive invasive procedures for patients under active drug therapy, despite their greater knowledge of recommendations on how to manage such patients.

Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will observe gravitational waves from galactic binaries (GBs) of white dwarfs or neutron stars. Some of these objects are among the most magnetic astrophysical objects in the Universe. Magnetism, by secularly disrupting the orbit, can eventually affect the gravitational waves emission and could then be potentially detected and characterized after several years of observations by LISA. Currently, the data processing pipeline of the LISA Data Challenge (LDC) for GBs does not consider either magnetism or eccentricity. Recently, it was shown [Bourgoin et al. PRD 105, 124042 (2022)] that magnetism induces a shift on the gravitational wave frequencies. Additionally, it was argued that, if the binary's orbit is eccentric, the presence of magnetism could be detected by LISA. In this work, we explore the consequences of a future data analysis conducted on quasi-circular and magnetic GB systems using the current LDC tools. We first show that a single eccentric GB can be interpreted as several GBs and this can eventually bias population studies deduced from LISA's future catalog. Then, we confirm that for quasi-circular orbits, the secular magnetic energy of the system can be inferred if the signal-to-noise ratio of the second harmonic is high enough to be detected by traditional quasi-monochromatic source searching algorithms. Background Advanced radiological stage of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is predictive of poor response to viscosupplementation (VS). To date, the impact of x-ray features on the duration of effectiveness (DE) of VS has not been investigated. Objectives To investigate the radiological features associated with DE of VS in patients with knee OA. Methods Cross-sectional study in patients with knee OA treated with 1 injection of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA). The primary outcome was DE, self-assessed by the patients in weeks of effectiveness. Radiological features (joint space narrowing—JSN topography and Kellgren-Lawrence [K-L] grade) associated with DE were studied. Results Fifty-one patients—33 females (76 knees)—were analyzed. The average DE was 52.0 (24.7) weeks (range, 13-155 weeks). In the bivariate analysis, DE was 14 weeks longer in those with K-L grades 1 and 2 (62.6 ± 36.4 weeks) than in those with K-L 3 and 4 (48.9 ± 18.6) ( P = 0.03). DE was not significantly different according to the involved compartment(s). It was significantly longer in men than in women (60 ± 31.4 vs. 47 ± 16 weeks; P = 0.035). In multivariate analysis, K-L grade (1-2 vs. 3-4) ( P = 0.007), male gender (0.02), and older age (0.04) were independently associated with a longer DE. Conclusion DE of a single injection of extended-release HA is longer in K-L 1-2 than in K-L 3-4 OA knees, regardless of the JSN topography. However, even the patients with more advanced OA benefited from HANOX-M-XL injection for an average duration barely less than 1 year.

International audience; Human-mediated species dispersal across the Mediterranean stretches back at least 10,000 years and has left an indelible stamp on present-day biodiversity. Believed to be a descendant of the Asiatic mouflon (Ovis gmelini gmelinii), the Corsican mouflon (O. g. musimon) was translocated during the Neolithic as ancestral livestock by humans migrating from the Fertile Crescent to the Western Mediterranean. Today, two geographically limited and disconnected populations can be found in Corsica. Whether they originated from distinct founders or one ancestral population that later split remains unknown, although such information is pivotal for the species' management on the island. We genotyped 109 and 176 individuals at the Cytochrome-b gene and 16 loci of the microsatellite DNA, respectively, to gain insights into the natural history of the Corsican mouflon. We found evidence confirming that the Asiatic was the ancestor of the Corsican mouflon, which should thus be unvaryingly referred to as O. g. musimon, i.e. as a subspecies of the Asiatic mouflon. Haplotype divergence dating and the investigation of genetic structure highlighted a strong and ancient genetic differentiation between the two Corsican populations. Approximate Bayesian Computation pointed to the introduction of a single group of founders as the most reliable scenario for the origin of the entire Corsican population. Later, this ancestral stock would have decreased in number, facing genetic bottlenecks and eventually resulting in two divergent demes. Splitting most likely occurred several hundred years ago. Their shared past notwithstanding, we discuss whether the two relic Corsican mouflon populations should be now considered as distinct management units.

Background: In France, from 30% to 35% of children suffer from multiple food allergies (MFA). The gold standard to diagnosis a food allergy is the oral food challenge (OFC) which is conducted in a hospital setting due to risk of anaphylaxis. The aim of this study was to evaluate an algorithm to predict OFCs at low risk of anaphylaxis that could safely be performed in an office-based setting. Methods: Children with MFA and at least one open OFC reactive or non-reactive to other allergens were included. The algorithm was based on multiple clinical and biological parameters related to food allergens, and designed mainly to predict “low-risk” OFCs i.e., practicable in an office-based setting. The algorithm was secondarily tested in a validation cohort. Results: Ninety-one children (median age 9 years) were included; 94% had at least one allergic comorbidity with an average of three OFCs per child. Of the 261 OFCs analyzed, most (192/261, 74%) were non-reactive. The algorithm failed to correctly predict 32 OFCs with a potentially detrimental consequence but among these only three children had severe symptoms. One hundred eighty-four of the 212 “low-risk” OFCs, (88%) were correctly predicted with a high positive predictive value (87%) and low negative predictive value (44%). These results were confirmed with a validation cohort giving a specificity of 98% and negative predictive value of 100%. Conclusion: This study suggests that the algorithm we present here can predict “low-risk” OFCs in children with MFA which could be safely conducted in an office-based setting. Our results must be confirmed with an algorithm-based machine-learning approach.

Purpose Early prognostication of neurologic outcome in neonates and children supported with extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is challenging. Amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) offers the advantages of continuous monitoring and 24-hours availability at the bedside for intensive care unit providers. The objective of this study was to describe the early electrophysiological background patterns of neonates and children undergoing ECMO and their association with neurologic outcomes. Methods This was a retrospective review of neonates and children undergoing ECMO and monitored with aEEG. Amplitude-integrated EEG was summarized as an aEEG background score determined within the first 24 hours of ECMO and divided in 3-hour periods. Screening for electrical seizures was performed throughout the full ECMO duration. Neurologic outcome was defined by the Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category score at hospital discharge. Results Seventy-three patients (median age 79 days [8-660], median weight 4.78 kg [3.24-10.02]) were included in the analysis. Thirty-two patients had a favorable neurologic outcome and 41 had an unfavorable neurologic outcome group at hospital discharge. A 24-hour aEEG background score >17 was associated with an unfavorable outcome with a sensitivity of 44%, a specificity of 97%, a positive predictive value of 95%, and a negative predictive value of 57%. In multivariate analysis, 24-hour aEEG background score was associated with unfavorable outcome (hazard ratio, 6.1; p = 0.001; 95% confidence interval, 2.31-16.24). The presence of seizures was not associated with neurologic outcome at hospital discharge. Conclusions Continuous aEEG provides accurate neurologic prognostication in neonates and children supported with ECMO. Early aEEG monitoring may help intensive care unit providers to guide clinical care and family counseling.

In this article, we study numerically the dispersion of colloids in a two-dimensional cellular flow in the presence of an imposed mean salt gradient. Owing to the additional scalar, the colloids do not follow exactly the Eulerian flow field, but have a (small) extra-velocity proportional to the salt gradient, $\boldsymbol {v}_{dp}=\alpha \boldsymbol {\nabla } S$ , where $\alpha$ is the phoretic constant and $S$ the salt concentration. We study the demixing of an homogenous distribution of colloids and how their long-term mean velocity $\boldsymbol {V_m}$ and effective diffusivity $D_{eff}$ are influenced by the phoretic drift. We observe two regimes of colloids dynamics depending on a blockage criterion $R=\alpha G L/\sqrt {4 D_cD_s}$ , where $G$ is the mean salt gradient amplitude, $L$ the length scale of the flow and $D_c$ and $D_s$ the molecular diffusivities of colloids and salt. When $R , the mean velocity is strongly enhanced with $V_m \propto \alpha G \sqrt {Pe_s}$ , ${Pe}_s$ being the salt Péclet number. When $R > 1$ , the compressibility effect due to the phoretic drift is so strong that a depletion of colloids occurs along the separatrices inhibiting cell-to-cell transport.

This paper investigates the referential information structure (IS) of full and reduced specificational it-clefts, which interacts as a distinct layer with their relational IS. Drawing on spontaneous spoken data from the London-Lund Corpus, this study examines how discourse-new and discourse-given information, i.e., referential IS, is distributed over the clefted noun phrase (NP) and cleft-relative clause. To assess the discourse-familiarity of nominal referents and open propositions, I develop an analytical model hinging on the predictability of information in accordance with the prospective dynamic of spoken language. The findings show that the distribution of given and new information is more diverse than described in existing typologies. In particular, it is revealed that the hitherto overlooked pattern in which both value and variable are discourse-given and in which the specification relation may be new or given is in fact the most common one. The findings also show that the choice between full and reduced it-clefts as two basic options is only partly motivated by the discourse-familiarity of the variable. The analysis of the prosodically coded relational IS reveals that multiple prosodic patterns can be mapped onto each category of clefts, thus demonstrating that the conflation of the referential and relational IS of it-clefts is untenable.

Background The local distribution of helminths in dogs and cats and the evaluation of risk of contamination represent an important challenge for veterinarians due to their effects on animal health and their potential zoonotic risk. The overall goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of the digestive and respiratory helminths infecting client-owned dogs and cats in France. Methods Faecal samples were collected from 414 pet dogs and 425 pet cats at 20 study sites during 2017–2018 and analysed by coproscopy. The samples included specimens collected from animals of both genders and various breeds and ages from a variety of living environments, and with different lifestyles and feeding regimes. Associations between parasitic infection and qualitative factors were explored. Results Overall, 125 (14.9%) samples (15.2% in dogs and 14.6% in cats) were positive for at least one of the species of helminths identified. Infection rates were highest for Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati (8.5% and 11.3%, respectively), while Toxascaris leonina was found only in one cat (0.2%). The apparent prevalence of Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala in dogs was 1.7% and 4.3%, respectively. No hookworms were found in cats. Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) were identified in 2.7% of the dogs. Tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum and Taeniidae) were rarely found (Angiostrongylus vasorum Crenosoma vulpis, and Strongyloides stercoralis in dogs, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in cats and Eucoleus spp. / Capillaria spp. in both dogs and cats was < 1%. Significantly higher fecal parasite emission rates were identified in young individuals, in animals with outdoor access, in animals living in the countryside and in intact animals (especially in cats). In addition, cats not fed exclusively with commercial diets and living with other animals (dogs and/or cats) were at higher risk for parasites. For dogs, hunting/herding and walking off-leash were found to be additional risk factors. Furthermore, pets with no reported history of deworming or dewormed > 1 year before the study were positive for parasites significantly more often than pets dewormed < 1 year before study participation. Conclusions The overall prevalence of helminths (some of which are zoonotic), the risk factors and the reportedly low deworming frequencies identified in this study (20.5% animals having never been dewormed and only 26.4% dewormed ≥ 3 times/year) illustrate the need for improving pet owners’ adherence to anthelmintic guidelines in France. Head with compound eyes narrower than pronotum (Fig. 6A–B). Disc of vertex, pronotum and mesonotum in one plane (Fig. 7A). Vertex (Fig. 6A–D): ratio A/B = 1.0–1.1, with margins slightly elevated, carinate; anterior margin of vertex triangularly produced, apex of vertex obtusely angled; posterolateral margins of vertex slightly diverging posteriad; posterior margin distinctly triangularly incised, to the level of anterior margins of compound eyes; disc of vertex flat, without median carina, with incomplete furrow spreading from posterior margin to anterior ¼ of vertex length in mid line. Frons (Fig. 7C–D): ratio C/E = 0.41–0.49; D/E = 1.58–1.67; frons longer than wide, widest below level of antennal bases; anterior margin prolonged, lateral margins carinately elevate; disc of frons with three carinae, median carina reaching frontoclypeal suture, lateral carinae not exceeding level of lower margins of compound eyes, median and lateral carinae connected at base. Rostrum reaching between metacoxae; apical segment shorter than subapical one. Compound eyes ellipsoidal, posteriorly with narrow callus. Ocelli distinct. Antennal fovea emarginate, posteriorly elevated, shifted to posterior margin of gena. Scape short, cylindrical. Pedicel bulbous, slightly longer than wide, arista about 3 times as long as pedicel; antennal plate organs evenly distributed on pedicel, organized in rows, reaching base of pedicel. Plate organs of crenelated plate type in the merged-tip type group, with ear-like lobes paired organized on the external circle of them, isolated in the internal area (Fig. 8). THORAX. Pronotum (Figs 6, 7E–F): ratio F/B = 0.44–0.54; disc of pronotum arcuate, with median carina and lateral impressions, lateral carinae not reaching posterior margin, anterior angle incised between compound eyes, exceeding anteriorly half of compound eyes length; posterior margin of pronotum widely triangularly incised, incision reaching level of posterior margins of compound eyes; lateral lobes with curved anteriad; distinctly elevated postocular carinae, not reaching posterior margin of pronotum; lateral carina and horizontal carina of side of pronotum absent. Mesonotum (Figs 6A–B, E–F, 7E–F): ratio G/F = 5.3–6.13, G/B+F = 1.80–2.08, G/H = 0.99–1.03; in mid line about as long as wide, diamond-shaped, with disc flat and lateral portions declivous, with five parallel carinae; median carina reaching almost to scutellum, lateral carinae reaching posterior margins, anterolateral carinae pronounced at base than obsolescent posteriad; mesoscutellar groove arcuate posteriad. Costal margin curved at base, arcuate to anteroapical angle; anteroapical angle widely arcuate, posterior margin arcuate, posteroapical angle widely obtuse; tornus straight; apex of clavus reaching &frac23; of tegmen length. Membranous, costal margin slightly curved at base, then almost straight, slightly concave at level of wing coupling apparatus, anteroapical angle widely rounded, apical margin distinctly curved, posteroapical angle widely rounded, anal lobe widely rounded. Basal cell slightly longer than wide, stems ScP+R and M leaving basal cell with a short common stalk. Stem ScP+R forked at level of wing coupling apparatus, ScP+RA 1 reaching margin distinctly basad of anteroapical angle, with 3 terminals; single rarp veinlet present. RP forked apicad of transverse veinlet rp-mp, about at the level of ending RA vein; RP with 4–6 terminals reaching margin basad of and at anteroapical angle. Transverse veinlets rp-mp 3–4. Stem MP forked usually about level of first fork of RP, with 4–5 terminals, single imp vein present between MP 1+2 and MP 3+4. Stem CuA forked distinctly basad of stem ScP+R forking, before half of wing, multifurcation with 11–16 terminals and with 10–12 icu veins. Stem CuP single, stem Pcu subparallel to CuP in basal portion, apically curved towards CuP. Veins with short scarce setae on ventral surface. LEGS (Figs 10E–F, 11). Profemur slightly flattened, with rows of short setae along margins, subquadrate in cross section, with rows of short setae along margin; basiprotarsomere as long as midprotarsomere, apical protarsomere slightly longer than cumulative length of basi-and midprotarsomeres; tarsal claws distinct, arolium bilobate, wide. Mesofemur (Fig. 10E) slightly longer than profemur, subquadrate in cross section, with rows of short setae along margins, basimesotarsomere (Figs 10E, 11A) as long as midmesotarsomere, apical mesotarsomere slightly longer than cumulative length of basi-and midmesotarsomeres; tarsal claws distinct, arolium bilobate, wide. Metafemur (Fig. 11B) shorter than metatibia, metatibia with 5–7 lateral spines, subquadrate in cross sections, with margins covered with rows of short setae, with asymmetrical 8 apical teeth (Fig. 11B–D). Basimetatarsomere (Fig. 11C–D) long, about as long as cumulative length of mid- and apical metatarsomeres, apical margin incised, with 12 apical teeth, with subapical setae, except the external ones; midmetatarsomere long, lateral teeth distinct, ventromedian margin arcuately convex, with bunch of setae; apical metatarsomere with rows of longitudinal setae; tarsal claws distinct, arolium bilobate. MALE TERMINALIA (Figs 12–13). Anal tube (Figs 12A–C, 13A) tubular, slightly longer than wide with posterior margin concave in dorsal view, produced ventrally in lateral view. Pygofer (Figs 12A–B, 13C) with upper part distinctly wider than ventral, posterior margin strongly sinuated, without any processes. Corpus connectivi (Fig. 13D) short and robust; alae connectivi large, bearing well developed crista. Periandrium (Fig. 13D–F) covering half of aedeagus, slightly asymmetrical, with two pairs of broad spine-like processes; dorsal processes bigger than ventral ones; ventral basal spine-like process on right side and a short membranous bulb, covered with minute teeth. Aedeagus (Fig. 13G–H) distinctly longer than periandrium, long and narrow, apically, with a pair of dorsal sclerotized strong spines, surrounding a pair of hook-like longer processes. FEMALE TERMINALIA. Pregenital sternite (Figs 14A–D, 16A–B) well developed with posterior margin with huge submedian protruding lobes with margin between them weakly arcuate. Anal tube (Figs 14A, 15A–D, 16C–E) round, short: shorter than wide in dorsal view. Paraproct small, apical margin widely rounded, reaching posterior margin of anal tube. Epiproct slightly shorter than paraproctal lobe. Gonoplac (Figs 14A–B, 15E–F, 16F) quadrangular, slightly sclerotized. Gonospiculum bridge short and robust (Fig. 16I–K). Gonocoxa VIII (Fig. 16G–H) trapezoidal, with a deep concave incision on its anterior margin. Endogocoxal lobe (Fig. 16G–H) bearing a membranous endogonocoxal process with minute apical teeth, slightly shorter than the anterior connective lamina. Anterior connective lamina with some strong 5 subterminal and 3 apical well sclerotized teeth (Fig. 16G–H). Fibula anterior slightly curved. Gonapophysis IX elongated, membranous with median lobes united medially, straight, densely covered dorsally with minute, scale-like denticulations, almost as long as lateral lobes, which bear the posterior fibulae; lateral margin with a long, developed finger-like lobe, covered dorsally with minute, scale-like denticulations. COLORATION (Figs 3A–C, 4A–F, 5). General coloration green. In dry and older specimens, general coloration reddish-brown or brown. Hind wing membranous, transparent, with one dark, round spot on anal area. Abdomen in ʻfreshʼ specimens with orange tergites and sternites yellowish, yellowish-brown to brown in oldest specimens. Distribution (Fig 17A) Madagascar (East): Alaotra-Mangoro Region: Moramanga District: Andasibe commune; Analamanga Region: Manjakandriana District, Mantasoa commune; Haute Matsiatra Region: Ambohimahasoa District, Morafeno commune; Vatovavy Fitovinany Region: Ifanadiana District, Ranomafana commune. Note The genus Laberia was described by Stål (1866), based on single female specimen labelled as originating from Mauritius (Fig. 3D), as a new genus belonging to Ricaniidae. This seems to be a case of mislabelling, as since the original description it was never reported on Mauritius, and all specimens available came from Madagascar. Melichar (1898: 296) moved this genus to Nogodinidae, and Fennah (1978: 118) placed it in the tribe Bladinini Kirkaldy, 1907, subtribe Gaetulina Fennah, 1978. The subsequent changes in placement of Laberia in Tropiduchidae resulted from taxonomic views and opinions concerning Gaetuliini (see above). However, the type material of Laberia has never been re-examined since its description and its characters and taxonomic status needed to be reconciled with the taxonomic changes that took place around the families Nogodinidae-Tropiduchidae and their respective delimitation. A few additional specimens of the species were found dispersed in various collections enabling this revisionary study that led to our separation of the genus into a new tropiduchid Elicinae tribe, Laberiini trib. nov. Additionally, during this study, we also discovered that another ‘mythical’ taxon from Madagascar, Perinetia reticulata Lallemand & Synave, 1954, originally described as a species of a monotypic genus of the family Acanaloniidae Amyot & Serville, 1834, was conspecific with Laberia palliata Stål, 1866. The generic name Perinetia was proposed by various authors several times for various species of animals. Currently, all these usages have been replaced by new names. Hence, the generic name Perinetia becomes again available for the purposes of taxonomy. However, the oldest usage of this name for a genus is now believed to be a junior objective synonym. All subsequent proposals with Perinetia as generic name have already been replaced.
