Envisioning a global citizenship education (GCE) that critically engages with neo-liberalism could be considered as being ‘feasibly utopian’. Yet, one of the core challenges facing GCE is that the market has been given too dominant position by the hegemony of neo-liberal doctrines, which has caused a growing number of schools and universities to approach curricular matters guided by concepts of international leadership, focusing on introducing innovation to curricula to satisfy international standards, participate in the global market and enter partnerships with industry and commerce. Given the ‘dominance’ of neo-liberal doctrines, it can be complex to pose alternative positions of GCE that are more oriented towards critical pedagogy. The articles in this issue explore philosophical, ethical and pedagogical visions of GCE focused on the relationship between world politics and social justice, women’s leadership and power, reflexive dialogic praxis and critical consciousness, de-colonialism and social responsibility. In different ways, each of the articles contributes to a re-imagined vision for GCE, through the important process of rethinking GCE for the common good.

This article examines how senior educators (n = 5) located in Japan perceive global citizenship education (GCE) as a reflexive dialogic pedagogy in the university undergraduate course ‘Dialogues on Global Citizenship Education’. Reflexive dialogue is a form of guided and interactive introspection by which educators encourage learners to speak about their needs and values as viewed interactively through the prism of the topics discussed with their peers. It encompasses educators supporting learners by encouraging them to critically examine the assumptions underlying their actions and the impact of those actions (praxis). It fosters students’ ability to examine systems of inequality and the commitment to take action against these systems (critical consciousness). From this perspective, the GCE course presented the educators with an opportunity to engage learners in reflexive dialogue in relation to the most important social issues of our time (e.g. climate change, COVID-19, refugee crisis, immigration, gender inequality, civil rights, racial discrimination). Data were collected by means of questionnaires and responsive interviews with the educators co-teaching the course, then analysed with the use of grounded theory and the constant comparative method. The educators expressed the opinion that the type of reflexive dialogic GCE developed in the course (1) fostered students’ conviction in common values, (2) developed students’ intellectual humility, (3) nurtured students’ appreciation of ‘Otherness’, (4) advanced students’ multiple perspectives and (5) encouraged students’ understanding of the complex dynamics related to immigration. Based on the findings, this article concludes by making a proposal for a reflexive dialogic GCE framework informed by the values and knowledge of Freirean critical pedagogy ingrained in praxis and students’ critical consciousness development to implement principles of GCE in Japanese and international universities.

This article presents a remarkable conversation on critical global citizenship education (GCE) between Mark Olssen, emeritus professor of political theory and higher education policy in the Department of Politics at the University of Surrey, and Emiliano Bosio, guest-editor of Citizenship Teaching & Learning. In developing the concept for this dialogue, we thought it necessary to frame GCE within a critical perspective that examines the political, economic, ideological and cultural conditions of super-complex societies, particularly in relation to notions of neo-liberal globalization and global justice. Olssen’s copious work has complemented postmodern philosophy by drawing on the work of Nietzsche, Foucault, Deleuze, and it has brought him high regard in Europe, the United Kingdom and worldwide; his insights, perspectives, concerns and outlooks bring to the centre of international educational debates on critical GCE relevant thoughts through which we can better understand the complex roots and history of global citizenship and cosmopolitanism particularly in relation to notions of democracy, equity, ethics and social responsibility.

Solid Oxide Cell (SOC) technology is considered as an efficient electrolysis technology to produce hydrogen at large scale. It can also operate in fuel cell mode using different fuels (carbon-based or non-carbon based like ammonia), and in reversible mode. Though proofs-of concept have been achieved at different relevant scales for those operating modes, some R&D works still need to be performed to improve performance, durability and cost. Improved and upscaled cells and stacks need to be developed, with a methodology combining multiscale and multiphysics modelling, electrochemical characterization in relevant conditions and advanced post-test analysis. Their integration into modules made of several stacks is also a stepping stone in order to reach multi-MW electrolysers. CEA is working on the whole value chain of SOC technology, from cell development and optimisation to module design and operation through stack upscaling. Recent achievements on those aspects will be presented.

Solid oxide cell technology is currently experiencing a rapid industrialization phase. To investigate operational strategy, CEA/LITEN has designed and constructed its first multi-stack reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC) module. While it is able to host four of CEA’s standard 25-cell stacks, the present work reports on preliminary validation results obtained in a 2-stack configuration. Thermal losses have been quantified and identified. While the hotbox is showing high performances, the overall losses increased twofold when taking into account pass-through piping and current connections. Module fluid distribution was verified to be homogeneous, and does not affect nominal stack operation. A durability test of more than 2 kh is presented. Over the first 1.1 kh, the stacks behavior was compared to that of a stack previously operated on a test bench. The remarkable similarities indicate adequate control of the module. Finally, a detailed analysis of the recorded efficiency was conducted.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most widespread chronic diseases in the world and, by its nature, it affects several disciplines. Patients often appear unaware and lacking an adequate lifestyle and appropriate nutritional education to prevent its aggravation. Consequently, it appears essential to promote educational initiatives aimed at helping patients diagnosed with type 2 DM to contain the disease progress. FooDia-Net is a project financed by the Ministry of Health which took place between 2017 and 2020 in 5 Italian regions, aimed at experimenting an innovative operating model of multiprofessional and cross-disciplinary management in the prevention of type 2 DM. Method: The FooDia-Net protocol was tested through a pilot project which enabled the evaluation food literacy levels and patient engagement through the administration of pre- and post-performance self-assessment questionnaires to evaluate the educational exercises proposed to the panel. Results: Out of 166 eligible patients, 38 completed the protocol (23%); results show a significant improvement in the levels of food literacy and, from the engagement point of view, despite not being significant statistically, good improvements were registered. Discussion and conclusion: Results were encouraging with regards to the multidisciplinary management of patients with type 2 diabetes. The FooDia-Net platform ensured continuity of care and emotional support for patients remotely.

Immunization of calves with Anaplasma centrale is used to prevent acute anaplasmosis caused by A. marginale. Natural and vaccine-acquired immunity is detected through serologic tests based primarily on A. marginale recombinant major surface protein 5 (MSP5m) because it has 91% identity with MSP5 from A. centrale (MSP5c). We developed a displacement, double-antigen, sandwich ELISA (ddasELISA) to detect antibodies against A. marginale or A. centrale. For ddasELISA validation, we analyzed serum samples positive for antibodies against Anaplasma spp. from cattle naturally infected with A. marginale ( n = 300) or vaccinated with A. centrale ( n = 255). Species-specific nested PCR (nPCR) assays were used to confirm infection. The optical density (OD) values obtained from antibodies directed at unique epitopes of A. marginale (ODAm) or A. centrale (ODAc) were used in the formula ODAm/ODAc. If the derived ratio was >0.38, the serum sample was considered positive for antibodies against A. marginale, with 98.9% sensitivity and 98.0% specificity. In a field evaluation, we analyzed 702 Anaplasma spp. antibody–positive serum samples from 34 herds by ddasELISA and nPCR; 571 were classified by ddasELISA as A. marginale–infected or A. centrale–vaccinated, with 84% agreement (κ = 0.70) between ddasELISA and nPCR. Our results indicate that ddasELISA could be used as a cost-effective alternative to molecular techniques to confirm infection with A. marginale in countries in which prevention is based on vaccination with A. centrale.

International audience; Deep Learning (DL) applications are gaining increasing interest in the industry and academia for their outstanding computational capabilities. Indeed, they have found successful applications in various areas and domains such as avionics, robotics, automotive, medical wearable devices, gaming; some have been labeled as safety-critical, as system failures can compromise human life. Consequently, DL reliability is becoming a growing concern, and efficient reliability assessment approaches are required to meet safety constraints. This paper presents a survey of the main DL reliability assessment methodologies, focusing mainly on Fault Injection (FI) techniques used to evaluate the DL resilience. The article describes some of the most representative state-of-the-art academic and industrial works describing FI methodologies at different levels of abstraction. Finally, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology is proposed to provide valuable guidelines for carrying out safety analyses.

The search for a composition between plurality and unity of psychology is developed here by articulating a reflection on three points concerning: the origins of the phenomenon of compartmentalization that can be traced back to a dual configuration - plural and fragmented - of psychology; characteristics that are connected but not coincidental; the acceptability of a trans-disciplinary approach to design a composition of psychology that respects its plural articulation; the choice of the area of health as the elective phenomenical field to test the possibility of composing the plurality and unity of psychology starting from a trans-disciplinary approach.

Based on a multiscale approach, the in-home built Fortran code SIMFC allows for high-temperature fuel cell simulation from material intrinsic properties to system overall operation.

Introduction We describe a novel technique for identifying endothelial Descemet membrane (DM) tags remaining after descemetorhexis in patients undergoing Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) surgery. Methods A surgical goniolens is applied to the corneal surface after descemetorhexis in order to visualize the peripheral inner corneal layer at 360° and identify endothelial-DM tags. Results A detailed visualization of the peripheral inner corneal layer is possible using goniolens, without using any staining in the anterior chamber. Conclusion The technique may be used to screen the posterior corneal surface for any retained endothelial-DM tags. It may to lower the risk of remaining tags and indirectly lower the incidence of DMEK graft detachment.

The Cenozoic succession of the East Pisco Basin preserves the sedimentary record of several episodes of deformation of the forearc crust along the Peruvian margin. The 1:50,000 scale geological map presented here encompasses an area of about 1,000 km2 lying astride the Ica River, and contributes to our understanding of the timing and mode of basin filling and deformation. Our novel two-fold megasequence framework provides a sound basis for establishing a first-order tectono-stratigraphic setting of the mid-Eocene–upper Miocene succession exposed in the study area. We interpret that the mid-Eocene to lower Oligocene succession studied in this work (megasequence P) was deposited in a single forearc basin, which was dissected into the present-day West and East Pisco basins by a fault-bounded basement high during the late Oligocene, and subsequently overlain by the Miocene fill of the East Pisco basin (megasequence N).

Introducción: La experiencia clínica ha permitido la ventilación no invasiva fuera de unidades críticas. Describimos el perfil clínico y evolución de pacientes que recibieron ventilación no invasiva en sala general. Material y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo en pacientes con soporte ventilatorio du­rante un año en un hospital general. Resultados: Se utilizó ventilación no invasiva en 43 pacientes, 67,4% con hipercap­nia. La relación hombre/mujer fue 1:1. La edad y el IMC fueron 68,3 ± 12,4 años y 30,1 ± 12,3 kg/m2 y los diagnósticos principales, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica, enfermedad neuromuscular y obesidad-hipoventilación. Un tercio inició la ventilación no invasiva en la unidad de cuidados intensivos, y dos tercios usaban ventilación no invasiva en domicilio antes del ingreso por exacerbación de la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (39,5%) o progresión de la enfermedad (14%). La estancia hospi­talaria fue 12,1 ± 7 d (14 ± 9 en supervivientes y 5,7 ± 3 en pacientes fallecidos). La gasometría arterial al ingreso reveló PaCO2: 52,7 ± 13,7 mmHg; PaO2: 72,2 ± 16,2 mmHg y pH de 7,36 ± 0,08. Se halló pH < 7,35 en el 18,6% y PaCO2 > 45 en el 57,4%. La PaCO2 al alta fue menor (46,1 ± 4,6; p > 0,05). El modo ST se utilizó en 34 (79%) pacientes. El período de ventilación fue 12,7 ± 10,2 días con uso de 6,9 ± 3,1 h/d. Un tercio recibió cuidados paliativos (13,9% de mortalidad). Tres pacientes (7%) fueron transferidos a la unidad de cuidados intensivos por deterioro clínico y treinta y cinco egresaron con ventilación crónica (94,6%). Conclusiones: Hubo escasas transferencias a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. La mortalidad hospitalaria fue baja y los que fallecieron tenían instrucciones anticipadas.

Ureteral stents are essential implants that are used on a daily basis. Since their invention, advances in stent design have been directed towards alleviating stent-related symptoms. It remains unclear how the material composition of the stent affects stent-related symptoms.To review the literature and define the clinical impact of ureteral stent material on stent-related symptoms.A literature search of the Embase, MEDLINE (PubMed), and Web of Science databases was conducted on December 17, 2021 to collect articles comparing stent composition materials regarding stent-related symptoms. Thirteen publications met the inclusion criteria, of which only one met the high-quality requirements of the Cochrane Collaboration tool for assessing the risk of bias in randomized trials.Most trials, including the highest quality trial, seem to support that silicone double-J (DJ) stents reduce stent-related symptoms compared to nonsilicone DJ stents. Regarding physical properties, it seems that "soft" or "flexible" DJ stents reduce stent-related symptoms. However, since there was only one high-quality study with a low risk of bias, it is impossible to draw a definitive conclusion owing to the lack of quality data.Silicone DJ stents, and by extension "soft" DJ stents, appear to reduce stent-related symptoms compared to nonsilicone polymers and "hard" DJ stents. No definitive conclusion can be drawn owing to a lack of quality evidence. Creating a standard for measuring and reporting physical stent properties should be the first step for further research.A ureteral stent is a small hollow tube placed inside the ureter to help urine drain from the kidney. We reviewed the literature on the impact of stent material on stent-related symptoms. We found that silicone may reduce stent-related symptoms, but no definitive conclusion can be drawn and further studies are needed.

Emerging and endemic mosquito-borne viruses can be difficult to detect and monitor because they often cause asymptomatic infections in human or vertebrate animals or cause nonspecific febrile illness with a short recovery waiting period. Some of these pathogens circulate into complex cryptic cycles involving several animal species as reservoir or amplifying hosts. Detection of cases in vertebrate hosts can be complemented by entomological surveillance, but this method is not adapted to low infection rates in mosquito populations that typically occur in low or nonendemic areas. We identified West Nile virus circulation in Camargue, a wetland area in South of France, using a cost-effective xenomonitoring method based on the molecular detection of virus in excreta from trapped mosquitoes. We also succeeded at identifying the mosquito species community on several sampling sites, together with the vertebrate hosts on which they fed prior to being captured using amplicon-based metabarcoding on mosquito excreta without processing any mosquitoes. Mosquito excreta-based virus surveillance can complement standard surveillance methods because it is cost-effective and does not require personnel with a strong background in entomology. This strategy can also be used to noninvasively explore the ecological network underlying arbovirus circulation.

Purpose Hemodialysis has become a standard therapy for adults with end-stage renal diseases. Adults undergoing hemodialysis have to cope with unique psychological issues that make their care journey particularly fatiguing. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to summarize and evaluate the effects of psychosocial interventions on the reduction of anxiety and depression in adults with HDs. Methods We included randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies that measure change in depression, anxiety, and quality of life. Results We identify three categories of psychosocial interventions delivered to adults undergoing hemodialysis. Based on our analysis, there was a medium effect of psychosocial intervention on depression (SMD − 0.85, 95%CI − 1.17; − 0.52, I2 = 80%, p 0.01) and anxiety (SMD − 0.99, 95%CI − 1.65; − 0.33, I2 = 88%, p 0.01) in adults undergoing hemodialysis. Conclusions Psychosocial interventions, such as psychological support or relaxation-based therapy, seems all to reduce depression and anxiety in adults undergoing HD. Preliminary evidence suggests that there may be a benefit of psychosocial interventions on the quality of life for adults undergoing HD.

To evaluate factors affecting the outcomes of preloaded Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (pl-DMEK) with endothelium-inward.Retrospective clinical case series and a comparative tissue preparation study.Participants: Fifty-five donor tissues for ex vivo study and 147 eyes of 147 patients indicated with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy or pseudophakic bullous keratopathy with or without cataract.Standardized DMEK peeling was performed with 9.5-mm-diameter trephination followed by second trephination for loading the graft (8.0-9.5 mm diameter). The tissues were manually preloaded with endothelium-inward and preserved for 4 days or shipped for transplantation. Live and dead assay and immunostaining was performed on ex vivo tissues. For the clinical study, the tissues were delivered using bimanual pull-through technique followed by air tamponade at all the centers.Tissue characteristics, donor and recipient factors, rebubbling rate, endothelial cell loss (ECL), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) at 3, 6, and 12 months.At day 4, significant cell loss (P = .04) was observed in pl-DMEK with loss of biomarker expression seen in prestripped and pl-DMEK tissues. Rebubbling was observed in 40.24% cases. Average ECL at 3, 6, and 12 months was 45.87%, 40.98%, and 47.54%, respectively. CDVA improved significantly at 3 months postoperation (0.23 ± 0.37 logMAR) (P.01) compared to the baseline (0.79 ± 0.61 logMAR). A significant association (P.05) between graft diameter, preservation time, recipient gender, gender mismatch, and recipient age to rebubbling rate was observed.Graft loading to delivery time of pl-DMEK tissues in endothelium-inward fashion must be limited to 4 days after processing. Rebubbling rate and overall surgical outcomes following preloaded DMEK can be multifactorial and center-specific.

Objective: To evaluate the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) anti-spike (S) IgG antibody production after vaccination with BNT162b2 and the protection from symptomatic breakthrough infections in health care workers. Methods: This prospective observational study (RENAISSANCE) had as a primary end point the evaluation of serologic response to BNT162b2 14 days after a second dose. SARS-CoV-2 anti-S IgG antibodies were evaluated with LIAISON SARS-CoV-2 TrimericS IgG assay (DiaSorin S.p.A.), which is able to detect the presence of both binding and neutralizing antibodies for trimeric spike glycoprotein. Participants were recruited from February 1, 2021, to February 22, 2021. Occurrence of vaccine breakthrough infections was assessed by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction on symptomatic and contact cases up to June 6, 2021. Results: Of 2569 staff evaluated, only 4 were nonresponders (0.16%; 95% CI, 0.04% to 0.41%). All 4 nonresponders were severely immunosuppressed and receiving treatment with mycophenolate mofetil or mycophenolic acid. At 14 days after the second dose, 67.5% (1733) of staff had anti-S IgG titers of 2000 BAU/mL or higher; 19.2% (494), between 1500 and 2000 BAU/mL; 9.8% (251), between 1000 and 1500 BAU/mL; and 3.4% (87), 1000 BAU/mL or lower. Women had a higher probability of having higher titers than men (64.5% [1044/1618] vs 58.3% [410/703]; P=.005). This was confirmed after adjustment for age group (odds ratio, 1.275; 95% CI, 1.062 to 1.531; P=.009). Four months after the end of the vaccination program, only 13 participants (0.26%) had experienced a breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection, including 1 nonresponder. This was the only participant requiring hospitalization for severe COVID-19. Conclusion: The vaccination campaign among health care workers at the ASST GOM Niguarda has resulted in a marked serologic response and reduction of incident COVID-19 cases. Yet, the lack of protection should not be overlooked in immunocompromised individuals.

Elevated nocturnal blood pressure (BP) is closely associated with increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events. Circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been proposed as a potential CV risk biomarker and shown to correlate with BP. The present study aimed to assess whether a reduction in BP is paralleled by respective changes in EVs.Fifty-five hypertensive patients (age: 57.7 ± 14.1 years) were included in the study. EVs and BP were assessed at baseline and at 12 weeks follow-up. Interventions to lower BP included advice on life-style modification only or life-style advice combined with additional pharmacotherapy. EVs were evaluated by flow cytometry (CD41+/Annexin V+) and BP by unobserved automated office BP and ambulatory BP monitoring.Nocturnal systolic BP correlated with EV levels at baseline ( P = 0.01). Multivariable regression models showed that changes in nocturnal systolic BP (adjusted R2 = 0.23; P = 0.01) and diastolic BP (adjusted R2 = 0.18; P = 0.02) were associated with respective changes in EV levels. Furthermore, intervention-induced improvement of systolic dipping was associated with a reduction in EVs in the univariate analysis (adjusted R2 = 0.06; P = 0.03). In contrast, systolic office, 24 h- and daytime-BP did not show significant associations with EVs. Patients whose medication was up-titrated at baseline showed a trend towards lower EV levels at follow-up (absolute change of -1.7 ± 1.3 EV/μl; P = 0.057).Circulating platelet-derived EVs were positively associated with nocturnal BP and therapy-induced changes over a 12-week treatment period. EVs may provide an integrated measure of BP changes achieved with pharmacotherapy.

McLaren’s copious work as a distinguished professor in critical studies at the Donna Ford Attallah College of Educational Studies (Chapman University), as co-director and international ambassador for Global Ethics and Social Justice (Paulo Freire Democratic Project), as co-founder of the Instituto McLaren de Pedagogía Crítica, Ensenada, and as Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) offers insights, perspectives, concerns and outlooks that bring to the centre of international educational debates relevant thoughts through which we can better understand the complex roots and history of global and local citizenship particularly in relation to notions of critical theory, critical pedagogy, Paulo Freire’s pedagogy, Marxist humanist philosophy, ethics of solidarity, social justice and liberation theology.

Allostery is a constitutive, albeit often elusive, feature of biomolecular systems, which heavily determines their functioning. Its mechanical, entropic, long-range, ligand, and environment-dependent nature creates far from trivial interplays between residues and, in general, the secondary structure of proteins. This intricate scenario is mirrored in computational terms as different notions of “correlation” among residues and pockets can lead to different conclusions and outcomes. In this article, we put on a common ground and challenge three computational approaches for the correlation estimation task and apply them to three diverse targets of pharmaceutical interest: the androgen A2A receptor, the androgen receptor, and the EGFR kinase domain. Results show that partial results consensus can be attained, yet different notions lead to pointing the attention to different pockets and communications.

Background Reconstruction of mandibular bone defects is a surgical challenge, and microvascular reconstruction is the current gold standard. The field of tissue bioengineering has been providing an increasing number of alternative strategies for bone reconstruction.Methods In this preclinical study, the performance of two bioengineered scaffolds, an hydrogel made of polyethylene glycol-chitosan (HyCh) and an hybrid core-shell combination of poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(\(\epsilon\)-caprolactone) and HyCh (PLA-PCL-HyCh), seeded with different concentrations of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) (i.e. 1000, 2000, and 3000 cells/mm3), has been explored in non-critical size mandibular defects in a rabbit model. The bone regenerative properties of the bioengineered scaffolds were analyzed by in vivo radiological examinations and ex vivo radiological, histomorphological, and immunohistochemical analyses.Results The relative density increase (RDI) was significantly more pronounced in defects where a scaffold was placed, particularly if seeded with hMSCs (2000 and 3000 cells/mm3). The immunohistochemical profile showed significantly higher expression of both VEGF-A, in defects reconstructed with a PLA-PCL-HyCh, and osteopontin, in defects reconstructed with both scaffolds. Native microarchitectural characteristics were not demonstrated in any experimental group.Conclusions Herein, we demonstrate that bone regeneration can be boosted by scaffold- and seeded scaffold-reconstruction, achieving, respectively, 50% and 70% restoration of presurgical bone density in 120 days, compared to 40% restoration seen in spontaneous regeneration. Although optimization of the regenerative performance is needed, these results will help to establish a baseline reference for future experiments.
