4. Assessing Leg Length and Offset in Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty: Overlay Versus AP Pelvis Intraoperative Radiographic Techniques: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Two intraoperative radiographic techniques to determine leg length and offset during anterior total hip arthroplasty (THA) are the AP pelvis and overlay techniques. The AP pelvis method measures LLDs and offset using AP fluoroscopic images, whereas the overlay method uses printed images of the native and replaced hips. The purpose of this study was to compare these techniques regarding clinical and radiographic LLD and offset discrepancies.Patients of a single surgeon at two hospitals from September 2017 to January 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinically detectable LLD was recorded. Radiographic measurements were obtained from preoperative and postoperative radiographs. LLD was determined based on the vertical distance between the lesser trochanters and the ischial tuberosities. Total offset was measured using a combination of femoral and medial offset. The Student t-test, Fisher exact test, and Wilcoxon rank sum tests were used for statistical analysis.Seventy-one procedures were done using the overlay technique and 61 used for the AP pelvis technique. No significant differences were observed in mean postoperative LLD (2.66 versus 2.88 mm, P = 0.66) and mean postoperative offset discrepancy (5.37 versus 4.21 mm, P = 0.143) between the overlay versus AP pelvis groups. The mean preoperative to postoperative absolute difference in offset was less than 5 mm in both groups. Clinically detectable LLD was noted in six of 71 patients in the overlay group and one of 61 in the AP pelvis group (P = 0.123).No notable differences were observed in intraoperative leg length and offset discrepancies during direct anterior THA between the AP pelvis and overlay techniques, suggesting they are equally effective in determining LLD and offset intraoperatively. The choice of technique to use anterior THA should be based primarily on the surgeon's preference, comfort, and available resources.

7. Effects of independent magnetic fields in the very low frequency range elf generated by selected elements of an electric traction unit on the ambient environment and electronic systems

- Abstract
The article presents research results and issues related to of magnetic component of electromagnetic field on the environment and electronic systems used in the electric traction unit. The electronic systems used and built into an electric power unit are operated in a wide variety of environmental conditions. Electrical and electronic systems with different purposes coexist on the vast railroad area, and an important operational problem, apart from environmental changes in which these technical objects are operated, is also the issue of external and internal electromagnetic compatibility. Depending on the extent of the railroad area, the intentional or unintentional emission of electromagnetic fields over a range of frequencies, the construction, technical configuration and method of ensuring electromagnetic compatibility for the electrical and electronic systems in use and electronic systems in use are different. It is necessary to skillfully and appropriately use all measures included in the electromagnetic compatibility pyramid to ensure the appropriate level of robustness, immunity and susceptibility of the above mentioned systems. Due to the impact and propagation of electromagnetic waves in the railroad environment, individual frequency bands of interfering signals should be considered separately for the whole spectrum of interfering signals. The article presents the results of research on the generated magnetic fields from the very low frequency (ELF) range by electric power units. Diagnosing the electromagnetic environment over the entire frequency range enables the realization and proper protection of the electrical and electronic systems used in an electric power train from the effects of unintended interference. Knowledge of the parameters of interfering signals - e.g. amplitude, frequency range, spectrum, etc. - will enable designers of electrical and electronic train systems systems to properly protect these facilities from adverse environmental conditions.

- Abstract
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data.

When using their foreign language, proficient Polish-English bilinguals found false news as more believable, true news as less believable, and discerned one from another less accurately. The effect cannot be attributed to greater arousal of news read in foreign vs native language nor to changes in cognitive reflection of individuals. We also found that greater cognitive reflection helps to discern true from false news because is associated with increased believability of true, but not of fake news. Consequences of our findings in the context of immigration are discussed.

11. No foreign language effect in incentivized gambles with verbal probability expressions

The Foreign Language effect is claimed to decrease risk aversion. We found no such effect. First, we asked N = 229 Polish native speakers to assign numerical values to verbal probability phrases in Polish and English. After finding very few differences, we conducted an incentivized experiment, N = 281, where Poles had to decide whether they would prefer to receive a granted amount of money or take part in a lottery task where the chance of winning was expressed by the phrases from the pre-test. Regardless of the language, the participants made the same choices.

In recent years, many public health organizations have used 2 frameworks for workforce development planning and action: the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) and the Strategic Skills for the Governmental Public Health Workforce (Strategic Skills). A third framework is also available for organizations emphasizing population health: the Competencies for Population Health Professionals (Population Health Competencies). This crosswalk analysis-conducted by the Public Health Foundation with input from the Region 2 Public Health Training Center and the de Beaumont Foundation-harmonizes these 3 schemas by systematically mapping the 2014 version of the Core Competencies and the 2019 Population Health Competencies with the 2017 version of the Strategic Skills to produce a comprehensive matrix depicting their relationships. When developing training and curricula, health department personnel and academic faculty can use the results to identify competencies public health professionals may wish to master to build the Strategic Skills. Organizations can also replicate the analytic methodology to align the Core Competencies with other sets of strategic priorities.

Significance\ud \ud Communicating in ways that motivate engagement in social distancing remains a critical global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tested motivational qualities of messages about social distancing (those that promoted choice and agency vs. those that were forceful and shaming) in 25,718 people in 89 countries. The autonomy-supportive message decreased feelings of defying social distancing recommendations relative to the controlling message, and the controlling message increased controlled motivation, a less effective form of motivation, relative to no message. Message type did not impact intentions to socially distance, but people’s existing motivations were related to intentions. Findings were generalizable across a geographically diverse sample and may inform public health communication strategies in this and future global health emergencies.\ud \ud \ud \ud Abstract\ud \ud Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. On the other hand, the autonomy-supportive message lowered feelings of defiance compared with the controlling message, but the controlling message did not differ from receiving no message at all. Unexpectedly, messages did not influence autonomous motivation (a highly internalized form of motivation relying on one’s core values) or behavioral intentions. Results supported hypothesized associations between people’s existing autonomous and controlled motivations and self-reported behavioral intentions to engage in social distancing. Controlled motivation was associated with more defiance and less long-term behavioral intention to engage in social distancing, whereas autonomous motivation was associated with less defiance and more short- and long-term intentions to social distance. Overall, this work highlights the potential harm of using shaming and pressuring language in public health communication, with implications for the current and future global health challenges.

Based on the cellular composition of the sputum, patients were divided into major inflammatory phenotypes: eosinophilic, neutrophilic, paucigranulocytic or mixed granulocytic. A stepwise treatment, including inhaled corticosteroids with long-acting β2-agonist, montelukast and short-term therapy with prednisone was initiated. Good treatment response was defined as the reduction in cough severity at least 20 mm from the baseline in visual analogue scale and improvement in cough-related quality of life assessed by the Leicester cough questionnaire at least 1.3 points after any of three steps.Results: Finally, 40/45 (88.9%) patients improved after therapy. Eosinophilic asthma was found in 13/40 (32.5%) patients, neutrophilic in 6/40 (15.0%) and paucigranulocytic pattern in 21/40 (52.5%) patients. No one demonstrated a mixed granulocytic phenotype. The response to the treatment was similar in all groups. However, the reduction in cough severity was inversely related to the percentage of sputum neutrophils (r = − 0.44, P = 0.003). We showed that the percentage of neutrophils in sputum > 46% may be considered as a predictor of poor response to anti-asthmatic therapy.Conclusion: The diversity of inflammatory phenotypes with paucigranulocytic preponderance was found in subjects with CVA. The response to anti-asthmatic treatment in patients with CVA was not related to the inflammatory phenotype. High neutrophil count in sputum may predict poor response to anti-asthmatic therapy in patients with CC and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.Keywords: bronchial hyperresponsiveness, chronic cough, cough variant asthma, paucigranulocytic, neutrophils, sputum induction

The paper puts forward a new interpretation of the problematic word btol that is sparsely attested in Old Tibetan sources. The philological analysis is supported by a lexicological survey of potential cognates; taken together these allow us to sketch the word family of btol, and thus to better understand the underlying semantics of the word. It is argued that the term denoted a rite within a funeral ceremony; to be specific, the rite of exposure of the deceased’s body before it was interred. In order to contextualise the rite and to assess its cultural significance, this paper also discusses certain funeral customs of later periods.

25. Using a foreign language does not make you think more: Null effects of using a foreign language on cognitive reflection and numeracy

- Abstract
Using a foreign language is suggested to affect how we think and decide, even reducing bias in our judgment. However, the exact mechanisms of its influence are still unknown. In this project, we tested two of the potential mechanisms driving the foreign language: increased cognitive reflection and greater task engagement. We analyzed previously collected data from 5 experiments employing the Cognitive Reflection Test and/or the Berlin Numeracy Test. The results show anecdotal to strong evidence supporting null effects. We believe that our results undermine the claim that using a foreign language promotes more cognitive reflection or engagement

26. Variations in FVC and FEV1 Biologic Quality Control Measures in a Global Multi-Center Clinical Trial

BACKGROUND Although quality control standards are recommended to ensure accurate test results, the coefficient of variation for the FVC and FEV1 biologic quality control (BioQC) is not specified. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate variations in spirometry BioQCs in a large and diverse cohort of individuals to determine an acceptable standard for the coefficient of variation. METHODS The FVC and FEV1 biologic control data were secondary analyses from an inhaled medication trial that was conducted over 3 y ending in 2018 that included 114 laboratories. Results were sent to a central repository for expert review. The FVC and FEV1 coefficients of variation were based upon a minimum of 10 spirometry values annually separated by at least 5 d. A second method of computing the coefficient of variation used 10 values within 28 d. Descriptive statistics were computed. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were conducted to compare whether the median coefficient of variation values between the 2 methods differed, tested at α = 0.05 using SPSS. RESULTS Of 249 biologic control participants, 170 met the first year's inclusion criteria. The coefficient of variation for the 5-d separated method was < 5% for 94.1% of FVC and 93.5% of FEV1 values in the first year. By year 3, 90% of FVC and FEV1 coefficient of variation values were < 4%. The medians for the 5-d separated and the 28-d measure showed no difference for either FVC coefficient of variation or FEV1 coefficient of variation, Z = -1.764, P = .78, and Z = -0.980, P = .33, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Interlab biologic control variation values of < 4% for FVC and FEV1 are achievable; however, individual labs should strive to attain lower values. Acceptable coefficients of variation can be achieved within 28 d.

Strict environmental regulation may deter foreign direct investment (FDI). The paper develops the hypothesis that regulation predominantly discourages FDI that is conducted as Greenfield investment rather than mergers and acquisitions (M&A). The hypothesis is tested with German firm-level FDI data. Empirically, stricter regulation reduces new Greenfield projects in polluting industries, but indeed has a much smaller impact on the number of M&As. This significant difference is compatible with the fact that existing operations often benefit from grandfathering rules, which provide softer regulation for pre-exisiting plants, and with the expectation that for M&As part of the regulation is capitalized in the purchase price. The heterogeneous effects help explaining mixed results in previous studies that have neglected the mode of entry.

Electroencephalographic neurofeedback (EEG NF) can improve quality of life (QoL) and reduce distress by modifying the amplitude of selected brain frequencies. This study aims to investigate the effects of NF therapy on QoL and self-efficacy in cancer patients and to explore age-related reactions. In a waitlist control paradigm, psychometric data (EORTC QLQ-C30, General Self-Efficacy Scale) of 20 patients were collected at three different time points, each five weeks apart. An outpatient 10-session NF intervention (mobile) was conducted between the second and third measurement point. QoL and self-efficacy changed significantly over time (QoL: F(2,36) = 5.294, p η2 = .227; Self-efficacy: F(2,26) = 8.178, p η2 = .386). While QoL increased in younger patients, older patients initially showed a decrease in QoL, which then increased during intervention. Younger patients did not differ from older patients in QoL in both waitlist control (T0-T1) and intervention phase (T1–T2). QoL in older patients significantly differed between waitlist control and intervention phase (Z = − 2.023, p d = 1.085). Self-efficacy increased in both age categories. Younger and older patients did not differ in self-efficacy in waitlist control, but in intervention phase (F(1,16) = 7.014, p η2 = .319). The current findings suggest that NF therapy is a promising treatment modality for improving QoL in cancer patients. Our study reveals NF being a tool to influence self-efficacy, which should receive more appreciation in clinical care. However, the effect of NF in different age groups as well as the influence on further cancer-related symptoms should be investigated in future research.

Objective: Obesity and depression are major, inter-related health concerns for men, yet many do not receive support to manage these conditions. This study investigated whether a self-guided, eHealth program (SHED-IT: Recharge) could reduce weight and depressive symptoms in men with overweight or obesity and low mood. Method: Overall, 125 men [Body Mass Index (BMI) 25-42 kg/m2] with depressive symptoms [Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score ≥5] were recruited for a 6-month RCT. Men were randomized to (a) the SHED-IT: Recharge group (n = 62) or (b) a wait-list control group (n = 63). The 3-month program included printed and online resources (e.g., website, interactive modules). It was adapted from an evidence-based weight loss program for men to include an additional focus on "mental fitness". The primary outcomes were weight (kg) and depressive symptoms (PHQ-9) at 3 months. Men were assessed at baseline, 3 months (post-intervention), and 6 months. Intention-to-treat linear mixed models examined program outcomes. Results: At 3 months, medium-sized treatment effects were detected for both weight, adjusted mean difference -3.1 kg, 95% CI [-4.3, -1.9], d = 0.9, and depressive symptoms, adjusted mean difference -2.4 units, 95% CI [-4.0, -0.9], d = 0.6. These effects were maintained at 6 months and supported by sustained improvements in other health outcomes. Conclusions: A self-guided, eHealth program that combined behavioral weight loss advice with mental health support decreased weight and depressive symptoms in men. Integrated interventions targeting physical and mental health may be an effective strategy to engage and support men with overweight or obesity and low mood. Purpose: The aim of the article is to develop an algorithm for classifying cracks in the analyzed images using modern methods of deep machine learning and transfer learning based on pretrained convolutional neural network - Inception-ResNet-v2. Design/Methodology/Approach: Transfer learning based on the pretrained convolutional neural network was used to categorize the images. The fully conected layer of the Inception-ResNet-v2 network has been modified. The last layer was trained using a two-class (binary) linear SVM (Support Vector Machine). In total, 20,000 training cases (images) were used to train the fully connected layer within transfer learning process. The research analyzed the possibility of using the deep neural networks for quick and fully automatic identification of cracks / defects on the surface of analyzed parts. Findings: The results indicate that pretrained convolutional neural network using SVM to train a fully connected layer is a very effective solution for visual crack / fault detection. In the analyzed model, a positive classification was obtained at the level of 99.89%. Practical Implications: The model presented in the article can be used in quality control carried out by process monitoring. An effective model for identifying defective parts can be used in both logistics and production processes. Originality/Value: A novelty is the use of a freely available, deep neural network trained to classify 1000 categories of various images for binary categorization of faults (cracks). The algorithm was adjusted by replacing the primary, 1000-output fully connected layer in the Inception-ResNet-v2 network with a binary layer (2 categories). The fully connected layer has been trained using the classification version of the popular SVM learner, but thanks to the combination of this layer with the sophisticated fearure extraction ability of the pre-trained Inception-ResNet-v2 deep network, the resulting predictive model enables the classification of defects with a very high level of accuracy.

We will use standard sacrificial “trolley” moral dilemmas (the footbridge case and switch case) to replicate past findings of increased pro-sacrificial (i.e. “utilitarian”) responding under the influence of alcohol, and two additional measurement instruments (OUS, CNI) to investigate the potential mechanisms behind the effect. We also aim to distinguish the effects of alcohol from subjective beliefs about being intoxicated using a placebo condition.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most important issue facing the world today. The effects of this pandemic are health-related, economic, social, and cultural. This study is part of an international project to collect measures related to social & moral psychology and examine the relationship with attitudes and behavioural intentions related to COVID19. The measures include beliefs in conspiracy theories, cooperation, risk perception, social belonging, intellectual humility, national identification, collective narcissism, moral identity, political ideology, self-esteem, and cognitive reflection. The goal is to generate a massive multi-national sample of representative samples that can serve as a public good for the scientific community. This registration concerns the Canadian sample and additional research questions posed by those involved with collecting the Canadian sample.
