Modelling the flow in a thin accretion disc like a dynamical system, we analyse the nature of the critical points of the steady solutions of the flow. For the simple inviscid disc there are two critical points, with the outer one being a saddle point and the inner one a centre type point. For the weakly viscous disc, there are four possible critical points, of which the outermost is a saddle point, while the next inner one is a spiral. Coupling the nature of the critical points with the outer boundary condition of the flow, gives us a complete understanding of all the important physical features of the flow solutions in the subsonic regions of the disc. In the inviscid disc, the physical realisability of the transonic solution passing through the saddle point is addressed by considering a temporal evolution of the flow, which is a very likely non-perturbative mechanism for selecting the transonic inflow solution from among a host of other possible stable solutions. For the weakly viscous disc, while a linearised time-dependent perturbation imposed on the steady mass inflow rate causes instability, the same perturbative analysis reveals that for the inviscid disc, there is a very close correspondence between the equation for the propagation of the perturbation and the metric of an acoustic black hole. Compatible with the transport of angular momentum to the outer regions of the disc, a viscosity-limited length scale is defined for the spatial extent of the inward rotational drift of matter., Comment: 14 pages, REVTeX, 3 figures

In a two species reaction diffusion system,we show that it is possible to generate a set of wavelength doubling bifuractions leading to spatially chaotic state.The wavelength doubling bifurcations are preceded by a symmetry breaking transition which acts as a precursor.

We treat the double well quantum oscillator from the standpoint of the Ehrenfest equation but in a manner different from Pattanayak and Schieve. We carry out a self consistent calculation of the structure functions in the dissipation range using Navier Stokes equation. Combining these results with the known structures in the inertial range, we actually propose crossover functions for the structure functions that takes one smoothly from the inertial to the dissipation regime. An overview of the present state of development of offshore renewable wave and wind energy is presented and future prospects are discussed. The information on some of the current wave energy systems worldwide are given as indicative of the present state of affairs. The main working principles of wave energy systems are described and the differences in terms of working principle, conversion chain, location and power take-off systems are highlighted. Some of the technology challenges are identified and the prospects of utilization of the various wave energy concepts are discussed comparing the characteristics of the devices in particular their power output. The evolution of the concepts of wind turbines with time and the main types of offshore wind turbine concepts are presented, from the shallow water fixed ones to the floating ones. The development of various numerical codes for the dynamic analysis of offshore wind turbines and the studies carried out based on the codes for hydrodynamic, aerodynamic, structural and response due to control system are presented. The present status of wind energy compared to wave energy and the role of naval architects and ocean engineers for the design and analysis of wave energy device and offshore wind turbine technology are presented and discussed.

ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) is a membrane transporter which performs cellular efflux of cholesterol and phospholipid. ABCA1's cholesterol transporting role in human placenta appears to be crucial for normal fetal development. Despite the critical importance of cholesterol in fetal development, expression of ABCA1 in the human placenta throughout gestation and its specific cellular localization have not been known yet. We therefore investigated ABCA1 expression in human placenta at first trimester and term by western blot and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis. Furthermore, its localization was investigated by immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. Expression of ABCA1 did not differ significantly between first trimester and term placenta at both protein and mRNA levels. Immunohistochemical data demonstrated that ABCA1 was widely localized in the villous and extra- villous cytotrophoblast as well as in some stromal and endothelial cells. Confocal microscopy imaging data showed that ABCA1 was localized largely at the basolateral and to some extent at the apical side of first trimester villous cytotrophoblast cell membranes. Placental expression of ABCA1 throughout the gestation and its specific cellular localization indicate that this transporter may play an important role in materno-fetal cholesterol transfer.
