Sweden has an ambitious plan to fully decarbonise district heating by 2030 and to contribute with negative emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050. The vagaries of the energy market associated with climate, political, and social changes entail cross-sectoral integration that can fulfill these national targets. Fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) is a relatively new concept of district energy systems that features a simultaneous supply of heating and cooling using power-to-heat technologies. This paper presents best practices for developing 5GDHC systems in Sweden to reach a consensus view on these systems among all stakeholders. A mixed-method combining best practice and roadmapping workshops has been used to disseminate mixed knowledge and experience from middle agents representing industry professionals and practitioners. Four successful implementations of 5GDHC systems are demonstrated and the important learned lessons are shared. The best practices are outlined for system planning, system modeling and simulation, prevailing business models for energy communities, and system monitoring. A roadmap from the middle agents’ point of view is composed and can be utilised to establish industry standards and common regulatory frameworks.

Orthopterans are commonly encountered in rural, suburban, and urban landscapes and have charismatic songs that attract the public’s attention. These are ideal organisms for connecting the public with science and critical concepts in ecology and evolution, such as habitat conservation and climate change. In this review, we provide an overview of community science and review community science in orthopterans. Best practices for orthopteran community science are provided, with a focus on audio recordings and highlighting new ways in which scientists who study orthopterans can engage in community science. Before the modern era, scientific discovery was commonly made by people who were not scientists by profession (Brenna 2011, Miller-Rushing et al. 2012). This began to change in the middle of the nineteenth century when science became highly academic, with greater “gatekeeping” of knowledge, and data collection became increasingly expensive. As a result, much of the knowledge gained during that time has been effectively withheld from non-scientists in difficult-to-obtain scientific journals, and there were few opportunities for the public to directly engage with scientific research. In recent years, there has been a concerted effort from the scientific community to change the way we engage with the public. These “citizen” or “community” science projects are filling gaps in the modern approach to scientific inquiry (Jordan et al. 2012, Toomey and Domroese 2013, Johnson et al. 2014). Here, we provide an overview of community science and highlight the exciting and unique role that community science can play in orthopteran research. We focus on how acoustic surveys can be used to study orthopteran biodiversity, provide best practices for orthopteran community science, and suggest future avenues for research.

Multiculturalism in foreign language teaching (FLT) has been an increasingly relevant topic in the field of language education. The aim of this research is to investigate the benefits of multiculturalism in FLT and to provide practical guidelines and resources for educators on how to effectively integrate cultural aspects into language teaching and learning. This research addresses five objectives that aim to fill the gaps in research and provide practical recommendations for educators. The first objective is to review the existing literature on multiculturalism in FLT and its benefits for language proficiency, intercultural competence, and cognitive and social development. The literature review will explore the theoretical frameworks and empirical studies that support the positive impact of multiculturalism on FLT, and the benefits for learners of different ages and proficiency levels. The second objective is to identify the challenges and gaps in research on how to effectively integrate cultural aspects into language teaching and learning in different contexts and for learners of different ages and proficiency levels. This objective will provide insight into the challenges that educators face in integrating cultural aspects into FLT and identify the gaps in research that need to be addressed. The third objective is to develop practical guidelines and resources for educators on how to integrate cultural aspects into language teaching and learning, taking into accounts the specific needs and contexts of different learners. The guidelines and resources will be developed based on the findings from the literature review and the identified challenges and gaps in research. The fourth objective is to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed guidelines and resources in promoting effective intercultural education and multilingualism in FLT. The investigation will involve implementing the guidelines and resources in different FLT contexts and assessing their effectiveness in promoting intercultural education and multilingualism. The final objective is to assess the long-term effects of multiculturalism in FLT on learners’ attitudes and behaviors towards cultural diversity, and to identify best practices for promoting cultural awareness and respect in language education. The assessment will involve tracking the attitudes and behaviors of learners over an extended period to identify the long-term impact of multiculturalism in FLT. The research findings and practical recommendations will contribute to the development of effective intercultural education and multilingualism in FLT, by addressing the gaps and challenges in research on multiculturalism in language education and providing practical guidelines and resources for educators. The research outcomes will be useful to language educators, policymakers, and researchers interested in promoting cultural awareness and respect in FLT., Виховання мультикультурності паралельно з навчанням іноземним мовам у сучасному освітньому середовищі стає все більш актуальною темою у галузі мовної освіти. Метою цього дослідження є вивчення переваг виховання мультикультурності у навчанні іноземних мов, як власне дослідження явища багатокультурності, та за результатами дослідження надання практичних рекомендацій та ресурсів для сучасних педагогів-філологів щодо ефективної інтеграції культурних аспектів у процес вивчення мови. Дослідження вирішує п’ять основних завдань, які мають на меті заповнити прогалини у наявних підходах до викладання іноземних мов у середній і вищій школах, а також надати практичні рекомендації для педагогів, у який спосіб навчання іноземним мовам може стати ефективнішим і новітнішим.

Renewable energy communities, first outlined in the European Directives and recently transposed into the Italian regulatory framework, are introduced as innovative entities capable of fostering cooperation between active and passive users involved in the production, sharing, and use of locally produced energy according to innovative management schemes. Renewable energy communities empower the end-customers. Citizens and legal entities are committed to a rational and economical use of energy to achieve the community’s climate neutrality goals and pursue the ecological and energy transition objectives defined in the national recovery and resilience plan. In the future, a significant number of energy communities different actors participating from the residential, industrial, commercial, and tertiary sectors are expected to develop within city districts or in suburban settings. This paper proposes and develops a methodology capable of bridging the complexity that can characterise the prototyping, implementation, and management of an energy community within a positive energy district. The approach presented here can also be extended to other application contexts in urban or rural settings. Requirements and best practices for administrative, technical, and technological management have been identified to achieve this goal. Italy is one of the first states to embed in its regulatory framework the European Directives regarding renewable energy communities. These will have a significant impact on network management models and will provide new ways for creating social inclusion that may help achieve climate sustainability goals. A governance model has been formalised for the empowerment of energy community members, outlining a framework useful for planning the proper implementation of a renewable energy community according to current Italian regulations.

[EN] The commonly accepted premise that collaboration among the educational community leads to school improvement and greater student achievement is not always fulfilled due to the diverse reality of schools and various initiatives to promote family participation. This work addresses the perception of teachers, school management teams and educational inspection of family-school-community relations in 23 primary schools in the Basque Autonomous Community, characterized by different criteria related to school effectiveness-ineffectiveness, aiming to identify good practice leading to school improvement. The study is descriptive-exploratory-exploratory-explanatory with mixed methodology, using questionnaires, indepth interviews and discussion groups. Results show family involvement is mediated by teaching staff´s personal factors, that all schools try to promote family collaboration, though forms of participation vary, and those which work best are proactive, stressing different collaboration dimensions. Conclusions include adopting a systemic approach, review and updating of training modalities, and assessment of teaching competences for collaboration. [ES] La premisa ampliamente aceptada de que el trabajo colaborativo entre los diferentes agentes de la comunidad educativa redunda en la mejora escolar y en mayores logros alcanzados por el alumnado no siempre se cumple debido a la realidad diversa que presentan los centros y a las diferentes iniciativas para impulsar la participación familiar. El estudio aborda la percepción que docentes, equipos directivos e inspección educativa tienen de las relaciones familia-escuela-comunidad en 23 centros de primaria de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca, caracterizados por diferentes criterios de eficacia-ineficacia escolar, con la finalidad de identificar buenas prácticas que contribuyan a la mejora escolar. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo-exploratorio-explicativo de metodología mixta, con empleo de cuestionarios, entrevistas en profundidad y grupos de discusión. Los resultados muestran que la implicación familiar está mediatizada por factores personales del profesorado, que todos los centros tratan de impulsar la colaboración familiar, aunque las formas y acciones de participación varían, y que aquellos que mejor funcionan tienen una actitud proactiva, con énfasis en dimensiones diferentes de colaboración. Entre las conclusiones cabe destacar la adopción de un enfoque sistémico, la revisión y actualización de las modalidades formativas, y la evaluación de las competencias docentes para la colaboración. Wearable devices are increasingly used to measure real-world head impacts and study brain injury mechanisms. These devices must undergo validation testing to ensure they provide reliable and accurate information for head impact sensing, and controlled laboratory testing should be the first step of validation. Past validation studies have applied varying methodologies, and some devices have been deployed for on-field use without validation. This paper presents best practices recommendations for validating wearable head kinematic devices in the laboratory, with the goal of standardizing validation test methods and data reporting. Key considerations, recommended approaches, and specific considerations were developed for four main aspects of laboratory validation, including surrogate selection, test conditions, data collection, and data analysis. Recommendations were generated by a group with expertise in head kinematic sensing and laboratory validation methods and reviewed by a larger group to achieve consensus on best practices. We recommend that these best practices are followed by manufacturers, users, and reviewers to conduct and/or review laboratory validation of wearable devices, which is a minimum initial step prior to on-field validation and deployment. We anticipate that the best practices recommendations will lead to more rigorous validation of wearable head kinematic devices and higher accuracy in head impact data, which can subsequently advance brain injury research and management.

This research study described the challenges, opportunities, innovations, and best practices of pupils, parents, and teachers in establishing learning spaces at home. The participants of the study were the seven pupils, seven parents, and seven teachers in the District of Cuartero, Schools Division of Capiz. The researcher used inclusion and exclusion criteria to identify the informants and used a phenomenological qualitative research design. Interview guide questions and a checklist were the instruments used by the researcher. The instruments were checked and validated by the advisory committee, examining committee, and language expert. All suggestions were adopted and incorporated by the researcher. Face-to-face interviews were conducted for data gathering. After this, the responses were transcribed, coded, analyzed, and thematized thru thematic analysis as a data procedure. The challenges encountered by the pupils, parents, and teachers were lack of time, lack of budget, no idea about what a home learning space is, lack of materials, and not enough time to make the learning space. Furthermore, these challenges were overcome by seeking advice from others, using only available materials, and buying materials needed, among others. Some of the opportunities identified are that the learning space motivates the learners to study. Further, it is a comfortable space for learning, regulates study habits, is a great motivator, and offers comfort to the child. It is conducive to learning, it allows parents and children to be creative, uses recycled materials, and allows parents and children to bond after studying, among others. Furthermore, among the innovations introduced by the parents and teachers include using local or indigenous materials, recycling materials, and adding educational technologies that the pupils could use for their study while giving them the comfort at home. Among the best practices identified were making the most of what the house's space provides, working together with the family to create the learning space, ensuring that it is cozy and safe, and making the most of the available resources.

Commercialised security has grown and developed in Kenya. This is attributed to citizens' many security demands on the state. Hence they turn to commercialised security to complement. Despite this development, few studies have studied the best practices of commercialised security on national security. The study took on a cross-sectional survey design. It was done in Nairobi involving adult residents. A multistage sampling technique was employed to obtain the wards to be studied. Those managing or purchasing the commercialised security services for their establishments and the managers of commercialised security firms were purposively sampled. The general public and the security guards were systematically sampled. Questionnaires and scheduled interviews were used to collect data. The SPSS version 25 was employed in data management and analysis. In the research, descriptive statistics included percentages and frequency distribution tables to summarise variables into thematic areas and convey the characteristics of critical variables. The study identified five best practices of commercialised security on national security: improvement in working conditions of the security personnel, adequate training and development, cooperation with the state security agencies, after-sale service and enforcement of regulations. The study concluded that the favourable mechanisms could only be realised through the consultation of the stakeholders: the commercial security industry, the citizens and the state. Thus the study recommended that The Private Security Regulation Authority needs to implement some of the requirements in the PSRA No. 13 of 2016.

Background: The use of a peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) is a common invasive practice in healthcare settings. It is estimated that about 70% of people with PIVCs will develop associated complications, such as infections. It is the consensus that best practices could reduce the appearance of such complications and reduce the length of stay in hospital. Methods: A project will be applied to implement the best approach in peripheral venous catheterization, provided by clinical nurses from an inland hospital in Portugal. The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology will be used on evidence implementation projects, which will be developed in three phases. First, a baseline audit will be performed. The second phase implements corrective measures, and the third phase is a follow-up audit. Conclusions: This project will improve the practice of the nursing team on peripheral venous catheterization nursing cares, positively influencing the quality of nursing care and patient safety. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has forced a sudden global implementation of telemedicine strategies, including in long-term care (LTC) facilities where many people with dementia and Parkinson disease (PD) reside. Telemedicine offers a unique set of advantages for residents in LTC facilities if effectively supported and implemented, including expanded access to specialists in rural or underserved areas or for people with dementia who cannot travel for off-site visits. Many medical and psychiatric organizations have recently issued new or updated guidelines on the use of telemedicine. On October 22, 2020, a multidisciplinary consensus panel was convened to collate a list of best practices for LTC facilities and specialists when conducting telemedicine with residents with dementia-related psychosis or PD-related psychosis (PDP). A collaborative effort between specialists, facility administrators, and facility staff is essential for the success of telemedicine in the LTC setting. Telemedicine in LTC facilities comes with increased administrative and technical challenges that fall heavily on the shoulders of the LTC facility administrators and staff. Specialists can ease this burden by maintaining flexibility and ensuring expression of empathy and thanks to the staff who are facilitating the visits. LTC staff can provide specialists with valuable information about their patients to aid in evaluation and diagnosis. Specialists can facilitate this exchange of information by speaking to staff who work closely with the resident about any signs of hallucinations or delusions they may have observed. Educational efforts can increase staff understanding of dementia and PDP and empower them to engage with, and facilitate the resident's treatment plan. Using these strategies to take advantage of the benefits of telemedicine, specialists and LTC staff can together expand and improve care for LTC facility residents with dementia-related psychosis or PDP.

Polar sciences are crucial to understand the effects of climate change. 6 out of 9 eco-tipping points identified by the IPCC are situated in the polar regions. Potential rising sea levels, altered weather patterns and changes in sea-currents are all connected to environmental change in the polar regions. Although polar science is necessary to understand climate change, like any sectoror industry, it is important to identify actions to reduce the impact of polar science on the environment. This synthesis report aims to define best practices in limiting the environmental impacts of polar research. It synthesises best practices from both polar regions on how to conduct polar research while limiting its impact.&nbsp

This document aims to utilize schema.org for the Polar data management community. The community has agreed on and plans on implementing uniform best practices for documenting data, observing assets, and other entities. Extensive work has been conducted under both the Earth Science Information Partnership Science-on-schema.org group and the Research Data Alliance to develop approaches and guidelines for interoperable metadata practices. While the current Science-on-schema.org guidelines provide a strong technical basis for harmonised use of the schema.org vocabulary, they do not make specific requirements for minimal acceptable metadata nor for specific types of metadata requirements for key polar research use cases. This document assembles data discovery use cases and requirements for polar data discovery that represent a target set of features for the POLDER federated search system. Use cases specifically elucidate and prioritise the functional uses of the federated data discovery platform, which will in turn be used to articulate a specific list of metadata requirements needed to implement a discovery system that provides those features., This document was a collaboration of international organizations working in the POLDER working group (https://polder.info/). "In diesem eintägigen Workshop fokussiert der Vormittag auf die Forschungspraxis der Teilnehmenden hinsichtlich ihres ökologischen Fußabdrucks. Die Teilnehmenden werden eingeladen, ihre Forschung- und Lehrtätigkeit anhand des Digital Humanities Climate Coalition Toolkit einer kritischen Analyse zu unterziehen. Dies erfolgt in Form eines World Cafés. Der zweite Halbtag beginnt mit einer Diskussion zu den institutionellen Spielräumen, durch die ein Paradigmenwechsel in der Praxis angestoßen werden kann. Welche Institutionen und Infrastrukturen können dazu bewogen werden, neue Impulse und Orientierungen zu geben? Diese Diskussion wird aufgenommen und anschließend als Podcast in der Reihe "Digitale Wissenschaft" veröffentlicht. In den letzten 2 Stunden gibt ein Rollenspiel den Teilnehmenden die Gelegenheit, die Perspektive der in DH-Kontexten involvierten Akteurinnen und Akteure einzunehmen. The idea of integrating Islamic values in non-religion subjects is still in the process of shaping its format. Many possibilities and flexibilities of the integration are existing and practiced by English teachers at Islamic Junior High School—knowingly as Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs). Also, in the middle of endless idea of integration, teachers have been trying to apply the integration based on their beliefs and situation. This study outlines the teachers’ best practices on integrating Islamic values in English lesson at MTs in Jawa Timur. By using descriptive qualitative method, this study portraits 6 English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ best practices. Data were taken from classroom observation, interview, and documentation which then were analysed as best practices. Best practices refer to the practice of integration which is considered as working practice from each teacher’s situation. The situation was mostly influenced by teachers’ lack of confidence to contextualize and operationalize the values into the teaching materials and activities, and the lack of model for integration. Further study on how to operationalize the integration, and on developing the model of integration will be worth exploring.

Background: In palliative care, symptoms are multiple and combined, evolving and changing, with a multidimensional character and multifactorial causes, and a high prevalence, negatively influencing the patient’s and family’s quality of life. Nurses who provide palliative care need to recognize and respond effectively to their patients’ symptoms. Methods: A project will be applied to implement the best practice in monitoring and managing palliative care patients’ symptoms. The Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System (JBI PACES) and Getting Research into Practice (GRiP) audit and feedback tool will be used. The JBI PACES and GRiP framework for promoting evidence-based healthcare involves three phases of activity. First, a baseline audit. In a second phase, feedback will be given to the project team after the conclusion of the baseline audit report. Then, a third phase will be conducted as a follow-up audit. Conclusions: This project will improve the practice of the nursing team in monitoring and managing the symptoms of palliative care patients, positively influencing the quality of life of the patient and his family. The aim of this study is to identify the best practices in hotel green supply chain management strategy by analyzing the practices of hotels from several regions. To this end, a comprehensive framework was developed to plug the gap in the literature. This framework was examined by studying a convenient and purposive sample of 47 hotels. Only top rated 4- and 5-star hotels were targeted. Data were collected from the GRI database by retrieving annual sustainability reports over the period 2017–2019. The best practices reported by this study were related to internal green process design, green quality management and internal commitment, green procurement of water/energy, and green customers’ relationship management. This is one of the rare studies that reports best practices at a global level by using a comprehensive framework developed for the purpose. Since its development in 2005, MTurk has proven great utility within psychological research. It has numerous benefits to researchers such as providing 24-7 access to a large and diverse global participant pool at a low cost. While previous studies have determined MTurk to be a valid recruitment method, recent trends have left researchers questioning the validity of its use. Furthermore, given the popularity of short-form delay discounting measures, there is a significant gap in the literature investigating best practices for conducting delay discounting research using Kirby et al.'s (1999) survey task, the Monetary Choice Questionnaire (MCQ)–specifically, with crowdsourced samples from MTurk’s general population. In an effort to bridge these gaps, this study seeks to investigate four main topics: 1) how delay discounting data from a general sample of MTurk’s basic workers compares to random dummy data; 2) how different methods of data quality control and validity checks influence this comparison; 3) the impact these different methods may have on various delay discounting metrics (i.e., k score summary statistics, data distribution, % LDR selected, consistency, degree of correspondence between discounting magnitudes); and 4) how the application of these criteria may affect the expected relationships of delay discounting and established covariates (i.e., age, income, education, and drug, alcohol, and nicotine use) often found in the literature (e.g., Jarmolowicz et al., 2012; ( ). The current study will use archival data from nonclinical samples crowdsourced using MTurk and previously collected for two unrelated and unpublished studies. The random dummy data used will be generated using the computer software, Research Randomizer (Urbaniak & Plous, 2023). Sample one presented questions and choice options on the MCQ to participants in the order found on the original measure (Kirby et al., 1999). Sample two randomize all MCQ questions and choice options when presented to the participants. Also, sample two incorporated the use of a single-item attention check question embedded into the MCQ procedure asking participants to choose between $0 now or $0 in 100 days (see also, Craft et al., 2022 for similar procedures). This study serves to be a significant contribution to the discounting literature as studies examining delay discounting data quality and validity on MTurk in nonclinical or non-addiction samples have been largely overlooked, or are outdated. Furthermore, this study serves to contribute to developing best practices for a priori data quality control and post-hoc data validity methods specific to short form delay discounting procedures, both of which have not been established in the literature. This study serves to be a significant contribution to the literature as studies examining data quality on mTurk in nonclinical or non-addiction samples have been largely overlooked, or are outdated. Furthermore, to the author’s knowledge, our study is the first to examine poor-quality or invalid delay discounting data collected using the MCQ compared to randomly generated responses. Our secondary aim is to examine the use of several types of data quality control methods used independently and in combination to compare the impact on various delay discounting indices (overall k, overall consistency scores, magnitude correlations, impact on established relationships with covariates, etc.). Our third objective is to investigate how these different quality-control methods affect the outcome scores on three widely used and extensively validated self-report measures of alcohol, drug, and nicotine use and abuse. Many of our methods used for objectives two and three are loosely drawn from Agley et al. (2021). Finally, we include an additional secondary data analysis to test these same questions and their replicability only with minor alterations discussed in later sections.

Payment for Environmental Services (PES) is an economic instrument that aims to reconcile the conservation of ecosystem services (ES) with the economic interests of the actors involved. In order to guide decision-makers in the process of structuring and planning PES schemes, this article analyzed Brazilian schemes against the best practices recommended in the scientific literature. As a result, monitoring the ES provision or its proxies and spatial segmentation were practices observed in Brazilian schemes in line with literature recommendations. The same did not happen with practices: flexible and/or adaptable contracts and payments greater than provision costs. These results are useful to reinforce strengths and point out possible vulnerabilities in the design of PES schemes, contributing to the improvement of both new and ongoing initiatives. Resumen El Pago por Servicios Ambientales (PSA) es un instrumento económico con el propósito de conciliar la conservación de los servicios ecosistémicos (SE) con los intereses económicos de los actores involucrados. Con el fin de orientar a los tomadores de decisiones en el proceso de estructuración y planificación de los esquemas de PSA, este artículo analizó esquemas brasileños a la luz de las mejores prácticas recomendadas en la literatura científica. Como resultado, el monitoreo de la provisión de los SE directa o indirectamente y la segmentación espacial fueron prácticas observadas en los esquemas brasileños de acuerdo con las recomendaciones de la literatura. No sucedió lo mismo con las prácticas: contratos flexibles y/o adaptables y pagos superiores a los costos de provisión. Resumo O Pagamento por Serviços Ambientais (PSA) é um instrumento econômico que busca conciliar a conservação dos serviços ecossistêmicos (SE) com os interesses econômicos dos atores envolvidos. Com o intuito de orientar os tomadores de decisão no processo de estruturação e planejamento de esquemas de PSA, este artigo analisou esquemas brasileiros frente às boas práticas recomendadas na literatura científica. Como resultado, monitoramento da prestação do SE ou de seus proxies e segmentação espacial foram práticas observadas nos esquemas brasileiros alinhadas com as recomendações da literatura. O mesmo não aconteceu com as práticas: contratos flexíveis e/ou adaptáveis e pagamentos maiores que os custos de provisão. Esses resultados são úteis para reforçar os pontos fortes e apontar possíveis vulnerabilidades no desenho de esquemas de PSA, contribuindo para o aprimoramento tanto de iniciativas novas quanto daquelas em andamento.

In order to advance the ability of nutrition research to determine effects of diet-microbiome interactions on human health outcomes, best practices and considerations for study design and conduct need to be identified, consolidated and discussed. The aim of this umbrella review is to identify current recommended “best practices”, define existing gaps where best practices have not been identified, and collate considerations for the design of studies aiming to determine effects of diet-gut microbiome interactions on human health-related outcomes. This umbrella review will target nutrition researchers to inform the community on current best practices and considerations for incorporating microbiome research elements into their projects. The overarching aim is to improve study design and reporting to advance understanding of the causal effects of diet-microbiome interactions on human health and facilitate synthesis and comparison of results across studies. Broad review objectives: - Identify perspectives, reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses exploring best practices and considerations in diet-microbiome research. - Consolidate and summarize best practices, discuss study design considerations, and identify gaps where best practices have not been established.

The success of many clinical, association, or population genetics studies critically relies on properly performed variant calling step. The variety of modern genomics protocols, techniques, and platforms makes our choices of methods and algorithms difficult and there is no "one size fits all" solution for study design and data analysis. In this review, we discuss considerations that need to be taken into account while designing the study and preparing for the experiments. We outline the variety of variant types that can be detected using sequencing approaches and highlight some specific requirements and basic principles of their detection. Finally, we cover interesting developments that enable variant calling for a broad range of applications in the genomics field. We conclude by discussing technological and algorithmic advances that have the potential to change the ways of calling DNA variants in the nearest future.

This document states recommendations and best practices divided to several chapters such as project preparation, project management and financial management using the body of evidence established via the two on-job trainings of administrative staff which took place at two partner universities - Technical University in Munich (TUM) and University of Zurich (UZH).

Background Nursing education often employs simulation-based education to prepare for clinical practice. However, despite its perceived importance, there is no common practice for its integration into different nursing curricula. This study aimed to describe and compare the levels of implementation of simulation-based education in nursing curricula across different countries. Methods A quantitative and qualitative exploratory study was conducted in 2019 using a questionnaire developed using the Delphi technique. Eight European member institutions participated in this exploratory study. Qualitative data were hand-coded and analyzed using descriptive analysis. Results Differences were found regarding (a) simulation in nursing programs, (b) the simulation environment, and (c) expert opinions. There exists a wide range of simulation-based education accreditation systems, and the absence of regulatory standards to replace clinical hours in the curriculum is a challenge for international exchange programs. Conclusions Universities should invest in and guarantee high-quality research to evaluate national and international initiatives and contribute to simulation-based education.

Brainhack is an innovative meeting format that promotes scientific collaboration and education in an open and inclusive environment. Departing from the formats of typical scientific workshops, these events are based on grassroots projects and training, and foster open and reproducible scientific practices. We describe here the multifaceted, lasting benefits of Brainhacks for individual participants, particularly early career researchers. We further highlight the unique contributions that Brainhacks can make to the research community, contributing to scientific progress by complementing opportunities available in conventional formats.

Item does not contain fulltext Rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and specifically in deep learning (DL) techniques, have enabled broad application of these methods in health care. The promise of the DL approach has spurred further interest in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) development and applications using both "traditional" machine learning methods and newer DL-based methods. We use the term CAD-AI to refer to this expanded clinical decision support environment that uses traditional and DL-based AI methods. Numerous studies have been published to date on the development of machine learning tools for computer-aided, or AI-assisted, clinical tasks. However, most of these machine learning models are not ready for clinical deployment. It is of paramount importance to ensure that a clinical decision support tool undergoes proper training and rigorous validation of its generalizability and robustness before adoption for patient care in the clinic. To address these important issues, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Computer-Aided Image Analysis Subcommittee (CADSC) is charged, in part, to develop recommendations on practices and standards for the development and performance assessment of computer-aided decision support systems. The committee has previously published two opinion papers on the evaluation of CAD systems and issues associated with user training and quality assurance of these systems in the clinic. With machine learning techniques continuing to evolve and CAD applications expanding to new stages of the patient care process, the current task group report considers the broader issues common to the development of most, if not all, CAD-AI applications and their translation from the bench to the clinic. The goal is to bring attention to the proper training and validation of machine learning algorithms that may improve their generalizability and reliability and accelerate the adoption of CAD-AI systems for clinical decision support. 01 februari 2023

The Atom portal [1], udel.edu/atom, provides the scientific community with easily accessible high-quality atomic data, including energies, transition matrix elements, transition rates, radiative lifetimes, branching ratios, polarizabilities, and hyperfine constants for atoms and ions. The data are calculated using a high-precision state-of-the-art linearized coupled-cluster method. All values include estimated uncertainties. Where available, experimental results are provided with references. This paper describes some of the software engineering approaches applied in the development of the portal.

Universities in India are globally famous for providing quality education with low cost. The privatization has further developed formal education with advance technology, infrastructure and learning environment. It has become a matter of pride to show case the innovations they do in providing the best education. Sustainability can be attained only by detecting the defects in teaching, learning and evaluation system of education and finding proper solutions in this regard. The prime stakeholders in education comprises of the students, faculties, staffs, parents, employers, collaborative institutions, regulating bodies, banks, sponsoring bodies etc. The expectation from each set of stakeholder differs in magnitude. Educational Institutions shall establish and adopt Feedback Management System (FMS) to detect the best practices and defects existing in the educational system. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) mandates the Feedback from the Stakeholders especially the students. This paper describes the regulatory norms, processes, opportunities, challenges of Feedback Management System in the Higher Education Institutions in India.

Curriculum is an essential ingredient of any higher education system regardless of what the education level is. All other aspects whether teaching, learning and evaluation or research and development, infrastructure and learning resources, student activities and support system revolve around it. Therefore, curricular aspects and the best practices connected to curriculum design and development play a very significant dimension of the quality of higher education since the curriculum has a decisive role in steering the other elements of quality. Reviewing and updating of the curriculum is the essential ingredient of any vibrant academic system. There ought to be a dynamic curriculum with necessary additions and changes introduced in it from time to time by the respective university with a prime objective to maintain updated curriculum and also providing their inputs to take care of fast paced development in the knowledge of the subject concerned. Designing of the curriculum to suit the clientele is important. Revising the curriculum should be a continuous process to provide an updated education to the students at large. Leaving a few, there have been many universities where this exercise has not been done for years together and it is not uncommon to find universities maintaining, practicing and teaching still on the curriculum as old as few years or even more than a decade. In order to overcome these lacunae NAAC has made efforts to compile the best practices in each of the criterion of quality and disseminate the same through publications, seminars, workshops and conferences across the country. Over the last decade, plankton research has experienced extensive developments in automatic image acquisition for identifying and quantifying plankton species. This information is useful for the reporting of plankton occurrences and ecological data. Imagery instruments can vary in the way they sample (benchtop or in situ imagers) and the particle’s size range they target (see Lombard et al. (2019) for an extensive comparison of instruments and specifications). However, due to the wide variety of instruments and their (automatic) output data and formats, it is challenging to integrate datasets that originate from different sources. For this reason, we developed recommendations for plankton imagery data management, which can promote the ability to make these datasets as FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable principles), as possible. The workflow presented here could inspire other Biodiversity Information Standards TDWG communities working with (automated) imagery data (e.g., camera traps) such as the Audubon Core and Machine Observations Interest Group. The recommended data format follows the OBIS-ENV-DATA format (De Pooter et al. 2017), a Darwin Core-based approach to standardise biodiversity data (Wieczorek et al. 2012) used in EurOBIS, the European node of the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) and EMODnet Biology, the European Marine Biodiversity Data Network. However, this format does not include sufficient information for imagery data, therefore we propose the use of additional Darwin Core terms. For example, by including the terms identifiedBy, identificationVerificationStatus and identificationReferences in the Occurrence table, more clarity is reported regarding the uncertainty of the classification made by an algorithm. Thus, data providers can publish manually validated datasets or datasets produced by fully automated plankton identification workflows; and users can choose to use validated or not validated data. See in Suppl. material 1 a practical example on how to report an imagery dataset following the best practices. Moreover, the OBIS-ENV-DATA format allows the ingestion of additional information thanks to the use of the Darwin Core (DwC) Extended Measurement Or Facts or eMoF extension in the DwC Event core. The eMoF stores biotic, abiotic and sampling measurements and facts that are related to the Event and Occurrence table. An important aspect of this extension is that it includes standardised terms and controlled vocabularies, such as the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) vocabularies, to standardise parameters that are not covered by DwC. The advantages of these is to unambiguously report information and to include those measurements that cannot be reported in the Event and Occurrence table (e.g., reporting abundance or biomass of plankton), and that are crucial to investigate ecosystem functioning questions. As a consequence, biodiversity data aggregators can extend their scope beyond species occurrence data. Fig. 1 summarises a typical dataflow that goes from imagery data acquisition to publication in several steps: Images are cropped and classified with software. Additionally a (semi) automated dataflow is presented where data providers can classify images in EcoTaxa and export the data in the required formats using an API before submission to EurOBIS. The next steps are to disseminate these best practices, encouraging plankton imagery data generators to implement these workflows to share their data easily, enriching these data portals and encouraging cross collaborations to create data products covering broader geographic scales and plankton species.

Organizations are currently using the potential of IT to achieve their strategic objectives. IT governance ensures that decisions related to information technologies are aligned with business needs and strategies. One of the best practices to introduce a culture of IT governance is the implementation of the IT project portfolio. However, there is a lack of studies that support this claim. We developed a rubric to evaluate the portfolio of IT projects of a university to determine its strategic nature and its alignment with the principles of IT governance. After a phase of qualitative research, we designed a survey to collect quantitative data in a real scenario. We contrasted these data with the estimated scenario through the results obtained in the previous phase. The objective of this research is to validate and improve the starting proposal as a result of qualitative research. This survey has been answered by Spanish public universities that have implemented a portfolio of IT projects and whose IT managers are aware of the ISO/IEC 38500 standard and its principles. The results have allowed us to design a rubric that can be used by universities to evaluate the relationship between the elements and the advantages of the IT project portfolio and its alignment with IT governance.

PurposeContinuous understanding of the best practices associated with new product development is a constant research opportunity to advance knowledge in the field, as far as changes in the business environment and the increasing turbulence level in different market segments create and reposition the importance of practices over time.Design/methodology/approachBased on a systematic review, the study aimed to analyze the 100 most relevant articles published in international journals on new product development (NDP), identifying new patterns on the best practices for new product development and the types of relationship involved in NPD.FindingsAmong the several practices observed in the literature, the analysis point to a larger group of studies that converge on the identification of a positive and significant relationship in integration – simultaneously – between supplier, company, customers and strategic alliances and the performance of NPD.Research limitations/implicationsThese results support integration as a cross-cutting and structural best practice for NPD, as long as it is constituted as a capacity, mainly applied in highly turbulent environments. This approach supported the proposition of a new framework.Practical implicationsOrganizations will be able to implement the proposed framework to NPD strategy in order to prioritize resources in best practices, aiming to increase the performance of new product development.Social implicationsThe adoption of integration and co-creation practices for the development of new products expands the possibilities of economic and social development, based on the involvement of the actors in this network.Originality/valueThis model had not yet been proposed in the literature, filling a gap in the agenda for future studies.

There are situations when you need to accelerate the software development lifecycle. When the state of Kerala in India was devastated by severe flooding in 2018, we faced such a situation while we were building applications for managing rescue and relief operations during floods. We present a variant of DevOps called Rapid-DevOps to meet the need for accelerated release cycles while maintaining the required quality and stability. We describe the cost-benefit analysis to justify its use and the factors in our development process that enabled its successful adoption.

Social Work Field Instruction in the Shadow of COVID-19: a scoping review Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to synthesize the state, nature, extent, and emerging best practices and principles in the current empirical literature on field instruction in social work. Building upon the previous work of Bogo et al. (2020), the aim is to answer the following research questions: 1) What is the state of the empirical literature (i.e., range and extent) on social work field instruction published amid COVID-19? 2) What is the nature (i.e., topics, design, and methods, theoretical frameworks, outcomes measured, and incorporation of culture and diversity) of the social work field instruction empirical literature published during this period? and 3) How have practices and principles in social work field instruction adjusted, adapted, and innovated during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic? Inclusion criteria: Our inclusion criteria derive from the work of Bogo et al. (2020). The concept of interest is Social Work Field Instruction during COVID-19. We will include literature focused on 1) field instruction; 2) social work disciplinary orientation; 3) undergraduate or graduate-level field education; 4) student or field instructor participants (i.e., field instructors, field educators, practice educators, practice assessors, internal or external supervisors, field supervisors); and 5) COVID-19. Articles will be excluded if they: 1) focus on integrated field seminars or the faculty field liaison role only; 2) include only field coordinators or directors as participants. In terms of context, we will include all empirical literature (inclusive of all study designs), without geographic restriction, published in English between March 01 2020 and December 31 2021 (22 months). Methods: To identify relevant studies, we will search the peer-reviewed empirical literature published between March 01 2020 and December 31 2021 in three steps. For the first phase we will search databases relevant to social work: Scholars Portal, ProQuest—ASSIA & Social Work abstracts, EBSCO Social Science Abstracts, and OVID Social Work Abstracts. Second, we will hand search of table of contents of relevant journals focusing on social work, field education, and practice learning. Finally, we will search the reference lists of articles included in the sample. Using a piloted screening tool, two members of the team will independently screen all titles and abstracts, followed by full article screening. Data will be extracted using a piloted form. We will synthesize (i.e., collate, summarize, and report) extracted data, presenting in narrative and table formats. Review questions: Building upon the previous work of Bogo et al. Methods:We will conduct the proposed scoping review following the steps of Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework (2005), methodologically informed by Joanna Brigg’s Institute recommendations and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines (Peters et al., 2020; Tricco et al., 2018). Search strategy: The initial search strategy was constructed using the three-step framework developed by Bogo et al. (2020). Using search terms deriving from Bogo et al. (2020), using the search terms “‘field instruct*’ OR ‘field educat*’ OR ‘supervis*’ OR ‘practicum’ OR ‘practice teach*’ OR ‘practice learn*’ AND ‘social work’ AND ‘student’” (Bogo et al., 2020), we will search databases relevant to social work. These keywords and index terms will be adapted for each of the following databases relevant to social work: Scholars Portal, ProQuest—ASSIA & Social Work abstracts, EBSCO Social Science Abstracts, and OVID Social Work Abstracts. Next, we will hand search of the table of contents of relevant journals focusing on social work, field education, and practice learning including: Social Work Education, Journal of Social Work Education, The Field Educator, The Clinical Supervisor, Journal of Teaching in Social Work, Journal of Practice Teaching and Learning, Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work, Social Work Education: The international journal, The European Journal of Social Work, The British Journal of Social Work, The International Journal of Social Welfare. Finally, we will search the reference lists of articles included in the sample, and reference lists in excluded literature flagged as relevant conceptual, editorial, and theses/dissertations. Study/Source of Evidence selection: All records identified through the search will be uploaded into Covidence software for conducting scoping and systematic reviews, and deduplicated. Using a modified version of Bogo et al.’s (2020) previously developed title and abstract screening form, we will pilot a subsample of articles with two members of the team independently screening records against the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on results of the pilot, we will determine if additional rounds of piloting will be required to finalize our inclusion criteria and screening form. Two members of the team will independently screen all records by title and abstract using the revised screening form. A third member of the team will resolve any disagreements between screeners. We will then screen full texts for inclusion, recording the reasons for excluding records. Data Extraction: We will use a modified version of Bogo et al. (2020)’s previously developed extraction form, which will include all relevant data (e.g., date, journal, study location, type of study, design/methods, participants/population, topic category, theoretical framework, models of field instruction, culture and diversity indication, key findings, field outcome measures, best practices and principles). The team will iteratively refine the tool through the pilot process, with modifications reported in the scoping review. Members of the team will independently extract data from all included papers, consulting with the team to clarify and address any questions related to extraction. Data Analysis and Presentation: We will synthesize (i.e., collate, summarize, and report) extracted data. This will involve presenting frequencies of the quantitative data, and describing the qualitative data (Peters et al., 2020). We will use a table to present the included articles and key characteristics, with additional tables summarizing the outcomes and impacts identified, and measures used across the articles. The aim of this project is to create a web resource for digital library (DL) practitioners to reference when creating user personas for development and maintenance of digital libraries. First, the UX Working Group plans to to reach out to libraries, museums, and archives and gather examples of personas designed for DLs. After gathering these resources, the group will evaluate to identify commonalities, differences, and gaps. A summary of work will then be used to support the creation of a best practice guide that is informed by user personas research internal and external to DL practitioners. The final output of this project will be a web resource that includes best practices and highlighted DL user personas from libraries, museums, and archives. This online resource will be made available through the Digital Library Federation.

The proposed scoping review follows the steps of Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) scoping review framework and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines (Peters et al., 2020; Tricco et al., 2018). According to Arksey and O’Malley, a scoping review includes the following stages: 1) identify the research question, 2) identify the relevant studies, 3) study selection, 4) charting the data, and 5) collating, summarizing and reporting the results. This scoping review protocol will outline those stages to provide a comprehensive overview of the study. Stage 1: Identify the Research Question. The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the best practices in working with immigrant, newcomer, and migrant populations involved in the child welfare system. The research questions are: 1. What are the identified best practices in working with immigrant, newcomer, and migrant populations involved in the child welfare system? 2. What are the outcomes of the best practices in working with immigrant, newcomer, and migrant populations involved in the child welfare system? The scoping review will also examine the theory and methodology used to inform the development, as well as, the evaluation of the best practices. Stage 2: Identify Relevant Studies. The scoping review includes the following sources: 1) electronic databases, 2) hand-search of relevant journals, and 3) reference lists. The grey literature was not included because the purpose of the scoping review is to discover and document the available peer reviewed best practice literature for working with immigrant, newcomer, and migrant populations involved in the child welfare system. The findings obtained through a grey literature search may not meet eligibility and thus excepted. The concept block method was used to identify research studies in the following seven electronic databases: CINAHL, ERIC (via EBSCO), Medline (via EBSCO), PsycInfo, Social Service Abstract, and Social Work Abstracts. A standardized list of terms related to each concept (immigrant/newcomer/migrant, best practices, and child welfare/child protection) were used to search the titles, abstracts, and keywords for each database. The thesaurus or index terms was used to explore related terms pertaining to the key concepts and applied to the subject search field for each database. Relevant journals that are not included in electronic databases were hand-searched using the standardized list of concept terms. The reference list of the articles in the final stage of screening were manually reviewed, with the relevant articles identified and screened for inclusion. The scoping review span a 20-year period from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020 to focus on contemporary literature. Inclusion criteria included original peer-reviewed empirical research in English language with abstract and full-text available. Exclusion criteria included systematic reviews, literature reviews, conceptual articles, and book reviews. Stage 3: Study Selection. Covidence, an online software for conducting systematic review, was used to assist with the screening process. All research articles were uploaded into Covidence and duplications removed. The screening processed involves two steps: 1) title and abstract screening, and 2) full-text review. In the title and abstract screening step, two researchers will independently review the title and abstracts of each research article to determine its relevancy and inclusion for the next step. The lead author in consultation with another researcher will resolve any discrepancies. In the full-text review step, four researchers will independently review the full-text articles to determine eligibility. Stage 4: Charting the Data. The lead author developed a data extraction form to document the following information: year of publication, study location, type of study, research design, theory, study participants, sample size, ethno-racial group, best practice, measurement, and outcomes. The data extraction form was piloted and refined in consultation with the co-authors. The research team will independently review each of the eligible full-text articles and chart the data. Stage 5: Collating, Summarizing and Reporting the Results. Once the data is charted, the research team will meet to review the findings and conduct content analysis. What are the challenges and best practices for doing data-intensive research in teams, labs, and other groups? This paper reports from a discussion in which researchers from many different disciplines and departments shared their experiences on doing data science in their domains. The issues we discuss range from the technical to the social, including issues with getting on the same computational stack, workflow and pipeline management, handoffs, composing a well-balanced team, dealing with fluid membership, fostering coordination and communication, and not abandoning best practices when deadlines loom. We conclude by reflecting about the extent to which there are universal best practices for all teams, as well as how these kinds of informal discussions around the challenges of doing research can help combat impostor syndrome.

The process of georeferencing is fundamentally a matter of spatial relationships: where is the point of interest in relation to the Prime Meridian, the Equator, the nearest landmark, etc. The process of adding geographic coordinates and uncertainty measurements to data coming from the work of others is often complicated by interpretation and subjectivity. Take for instance the description, “found near the city of Springfield", which might be assigned a coordinate pair based on the centroid of the city’s footprint. If the implication is that the subject was found around Springfield, then how close? Could this description refer to a point within the city? Is this description referring to the city limits, the farthest reaches of city mailing addresses, or the original author’s interpretation of the territory of Springfield? At present, best practices for adding coordinate uncertainty to such data records is to expand arbitrarily the boundaries of the feature (e.g., the city limits of Springfield), and use the distance from this new shape’s center to its farthest point (Zermoglio et al. 2020). In this talk, I propose a way to objectively quantify the area that can be considered “near” a given reference point. Voronoi diagrams are collections of points (or “cells”) that correspond to a single region. Any coordinate location within a given region is closer to that region’s cell than to any other cell in the diagram (Dobrin 2005). I describe possible applications of Voronoi diagrams in georeferencing sites described as “near” named places, which take into account the uneven distribution of named places across a region. I demonstrate the straightforward process of generating these diagrams using readily available open-source GIS (Geographic Information System) data and programs, and discuss both shortcomings and possible deeper-level applications of these approaches.

BACKGROUND: The world has entered the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Utilisation of technology is inevitable. For the past years, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has halted normal operations, including in the physical classroom for nursing students. Students and facilitators had to move to a remote way of teaching and learning, utilising online teaching and learning. However, students and facilitators were not ready to use online teaching and learning. This not only resulted in numerous challenges, but also became an eye-opener for best practices and intervening strategies. OBJECTIVES: To explore and describe experiences of students in a nursing college with regard to online teaching and learning during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design was adopted. A purposive, nonprobability sampling approach was used to select participants from second year, third year and fourth year. First-year student nurses were excluded because they did not commence with classrooms at that time RESULTS: Seven themes emerged, namely knowledge, confidence, training, equipment, clinical exposure, course extension and flexibility, and all themes had subthemes. CONCLUSION: It is evident that students had more negative experiences during online teaching and learning than positive experiences. CONTRIBUTION: The study contributed enormously to teaching and learning of student nurses in nursing colleges as its results can be used to improve nursing colleges with regard to online teaching and learning.

Many scientific projects are intended to inform public policy, however there are often difficulties transferring or translating research from scientists to policy makers. This paper reviews the existing literature on the quality of communication between scientists or field experts and policy makers and the challenges they face in conveying their research. A majority of best practice recommendations related to effective communication are rooted in anecdotal evidence and have not yet been subjected to systematic scientific study. This is, in part, because the nature of public policy makes data collection, randomization, or correcting for confounding factors extremely challenging. Studies that do put these recommendations to the test are most commonly fielded as national surveys of field experts and policy makers in comparative contexts. Few studies examine this subject in the United States, however, and most find mixed results as to the efficacy of well-accepted scientific communication strategies. Further, existing work often fails to account for the impact of reputation on the willingness of scientists to engage in policymaking and the willingness of political actors to seek and accept expert input in the policymaking process, unless it confirms pre-existing biases. The authors explain how this gap in the literature has important consequences for the quality of policies produced and suggest future avenues of research in the pursuit of sincere evidence-based policymaking.View the NCST Project Webpage

Many European countries addresses a great problem related to the loss of knowledge and experience when teachers retire or move to different institutions. This loss occurs because many educational institutions do not possess the mechanisms or systems necessary for the retention and sharing of knowledge. In this chapter, the results of the Learning Schools Project, an Erasmus+ innovation Project developed by educational institutions in Bulgaria, Italy, Turkey and Spain, will be presented. The aim of this study is to analyze, reflecting on Senge’s systems’ perspective, how change, innovation and leadership is promoted within schools and thus to identify ways to enhance individual, team and organizational learning, in each country participating in this project. Muchos países europeos abordan un gran problema relacionado con la pérdida de conocimientos y experiencia cuando los docentes se jubilan o se trasladan a diferentes instituciones. Esta pérdida ocurre porque muchas instituciones educativas no cuentan con los mecanismos o sistemas necesarios para la retención y el intercambio de conocimientos. En este capítulo se presentarán los resultados del Learning Schools Project, un proyecto de innovación Erasmus+ desarrollado por instituciones educativas de Bulgaria, Italia, Turquía y España. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar, reflexionando desde la perspectiva de los sistemas de Senge, cómo se promueve el cambio, la innovación y el liderazgo dentro de las escuelas y así identificar formas de potenciar el aprendizaje individual, de equipo y organizacional, en cada país que participa en este proyecto.

Community engagement is a widespread requirement in current archaeological work. However, heritage management still lacks public participation in many regions. This paper aims to offer an example of community engagement as applied research in the context of an international conference. In order to do so, the strategy, the actions for the targeted communities and the outcomes of those actions will be presented, with a special focus on the context of World Heritage and the outcomes of the three conferences.
