Apparue dans le champ historique avec les travaux fondateurs de Maurice Agulhon, la notion de sociabilité s’est révélée une grille d’analyse pertinente pour une histoire socio-culturelle attachée à comprendre les transformations du siècle des Lumières, les mutations de la culture politique et la genèse de l’opinion publique, le passage d’une société aristocratique à une société bourgeoise et le lien entre l’émergence d’une sphère publique et l’expansion d’un capitalisme commercial. Ces problématiques sont au cœur des sujets abordés dans ce volume, qui s’intéresse à un type spécifique de sociabilités urbaines : celles, plutôt élitaires, qui ont été regardées comme les laboratoires d’idéaux nouveaux, étrangers, sinon antagoniques avec ceux de l’univers de la cour. Les contributions rassemblées soumettent à un nouvel examen et nuancent le schéma de la formation, entre le xviie et le xviiie siècle, d’un espace public urbain défini par sa différence avec la cour ou les académies, ou par opposition à la sphère privée, domestique, à l’espace du secret initiatique ou encore au domaine clos des cabinets et des galeries scientifiques et artistiques.
