The present-day envelope of gaseous planets is a relic of how these giant planets originated and evolved. Measuring their elemental composition therefore presents a powerful opportunity to answer long-standing questions regarding planet formation. Obtaining precise observational constraints on the elemental inventory of giant exoplanets has, however, remained challenging due to the limited simultaneous wavelength coverage of current space-based instruments. Here, we present thermal emission observations of the non-transiting hot Jupiter $��$ Boo b using the new wide wavelength coverage (0.95$-$2.50$\,��$m) and high spectral resolution ($R=70\,000$) SPIRou spectrograph. By combining a total of 20 hours of SPIRou data obtained over five nights in a full atmospheric retrieval framework designed for high-resolution data, we constrain the abundances of all the major oxygen- and carbon-bearing molecules and recover a non-inverted temperature structure using a new free-shape, nonparametric TP profile retrieval approach. We find a volume mixing ratio of log(CO)$\,\,=-2.46_{-0.29}^{+0.25}$ and a highly depleted water abundance of less than $0.0072$ times the value expected for a solar composition envelope. Combined with upper limits on the abundances of CH$_4$, CO$_2$, HCN, TiO, and C$_2$H$_2$, this results in a gas-phase C/H ratio of 5.85$_{-2.82}^{+4.44}\times\,$solar, consistent with the value of Jupiter, and an envelope C/O ratio robustly greater than 0.60, even when taking into account the oxygen that may be sequestered out of the gas-phase. Combined, the inferred super-solar C/H, O/H, and C/O ratios on $��$ Boo b support a formation scenario beyond the water snowline in a disk enriched in CO due to pebble drift., 27 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Multi-wavelength time-resolved observations of rotationally modulated variability from brown dwarfs and giant exoplanets are the most effective method for constraining their heterogeneous atmospheric structures. In a companion paper (Bowler et al. 2020), we reported the discovery of strong near-infrared variability in HST/WFC3/G141 light curves of the very red L-dwarf companion VHS J1256-1257b. In this paper, we present a follow-up 36-hr Spitzer/IRAC Channel 2 light curve together with an in-depth analysis of the HST and the Spitzer data. The combined dataset provides time-resolved light curves of VHS1256b sampling 1.1 to 4.5 $��$m. The Spitzer light curve is best-fit with a single sine wave with a period of $22.04\pm0.05$ hr and a peak-to-peak amplitude of $5.76\pm0.04$%. Combining the period with a previously measured projected rotational velocity ($v\sin i$), we find that VHS1256b is most consistent with equatorial viewing geometry. The HST/G141+Spitzer spectral energy distribution favors a $T_{\rm eff}$ of 1000~K, low surface gravity model with disequilibrium chemistry. The spectral variability of VHS1256b is consistent with predictions from partly cloudy models, suggesting heterogeneous clouds are the dominant source of the observed modulations. We find evidence at the $3.3��$ level for amplitude variations within the 1.67$��$m CH$_{4}$ band, which is the first such detection for a variable L-dwarf. We compare the HST/G141 time-resolved spectra of three red L-dwarfs with high-amplitude near-infrared rotational modulations and find that although their time-averaged spectra are similar, their spectroscopic variabilities exhibit notable differences. Clouds in the atmospheres of exoplanets confound characterization efforts by reducing, eliminating, and distorting spectral signatures of molecular abundances. As such, interpretations of exoplanet spectra strongly depend on the choice of cloud model, many of which are highly simplified and lack predictive power. In this work, we use a cloud model that treat microphysical processes to simulate potassium chloride (KCl) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) clouds in the atmosphere of the super Earth GJ 1214b and how they vary as a function of the strength of vertical mixing and the atmospheric metallicity. Microphysical processes control the size and spatial distribution of cloud particles, allowing for the computation of more physical cloud distributions than simpler models. We find that the mass and opacity of KCl clouds increase with mixing strength and metallicity, with the particle size and spatial distribution defined by nucleation, condensation, evaporation, and transport timescales. ZnS clouds cannot form without the presence of condensation nuclei, while heterogeneous nucleation of ZnS on KCl reduces particle sizes compared to pure KCl cases. In order to explain the flat transmission spectrum of GJ 1214b with homogeneously nucleated KCl clouds, the atmospheric metallicity must be at least 1000 $\times$ solar, and the eddy diffusivity must be at least 10$^{10}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$. We predict that JWST observations of GJ 1214b may reveal the presence of methane, carbon monoxide, and water, allowing for constraints to be placed on atmospheric metallicity and C/O ratio., 30 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables, 4 years, 1 PhD thesis. The elemental compositions of hot Jupiters are informative relics of planet formation that can help us answer long-standing questions regarding the origin and formation of giant planets. Here, I present the main conclusions from a comprehensive atmospheric retrieval survey of eight hot Jupiters with detectable molecular absorption in their near-infrared transmission spectra. I analyze the eight transmission spectra using the newly-developed, self-consistent atmospheric retrieval framework, SCARLET. Unlike previous methods, SCARLET combines the physical and chemical consistency of complex atmospheric models with the statistical treatment of observational uncertainties known from atmospheric retrieval techniques. I find that all eight hot Jupiters consistently require carbon-to-oxygen ratios (C/O) below 0.9. One of the most profound questions about the newly discovered class of low-density super-Earths is whether these exoplanets are predominately H2-dominated mini-Neptunes or volatile-rich worlds with gas envelopes dominated by H2O, CO2, CO, CH4, or N2. Transit observations of the super-Earth GJ 1214b rule out a cloud-free H2-dominated atmosphere, but are not able to determine whether the lack of deep spectral features is due to high-altitude clouds or the presence of a high mean molecular mass atmosphere. Here, we demonstrate that one can unambiguously distinguish between cloudy mini-Neptunes and volatile-dominated worlds based on the differences in the wing steepness and relative depths of water absorption features in moderate-resolution NIR transmission spectra (R~100). In a numerical retrieval study, we show for GJ 1214b that an unambiguous distinction between a cloudy H2-dominated atmosphere and cloud-free H2 atmosphere will be possible if the uncertainties in the spectral transit depth measurements can be reduced by a factor of ~3 compared to the published HST WFC3 and VLT transit observations. We argue that the required precision for the distinction may be achievable with currently available instrumentation by stacking 10-15 transit observations. We provide a scaling law that scales our quantitative results to other transiting super-Earths and Neptunes such as HD 97658b, 55 Cnc e, and GJ 436b. The analysis is performed using an improved version of our Bayesian atmospheric retrieval framework. The new framework not only constrains the gas composition and cloud/haze parameters, but also determines our confidence in having detected molecules and cloud/haze species through Bayesian model comparison. Using the Bayesian tool, we demonstrate quantitatively that the subtle transit depth variation in the Berta et al.
