The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph offering simultaneous spectral coverage in UV-VIS (350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) wavelength regimes with an average of R close to 4500 for a 1 slit. SOXS also has imaging capabilities in the visible wavelength regime. It is designed and optimized to observe all kinds of transients and variable sources. The final destination of SOXS is the Nasmyth platform of the ESO NTT at La Silla, Chile. The SOXS consortium has a relatively large geographic spread, and therefore the Assembly Integration and Verification (AIV) of this medium-class instrument follows a modular approach. Each of the five main sub-systems of SOXS, namely the Common Path, the Calibration Unit, the Acquisition Camera, the UV-VIS Spectrograph, and the NIR Spectrograph, are undergoing (or undergone) internal alignment and testing in the respective consortium institutes. INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova delivers the Common Path sub-system, the backbone of the entire instrument. We present the progresses of the simulation tools, the Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) and End-to-End simulator (E2E), for the Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) instrument at the ESO-NTT 3.58-meter telescope. The SOXS will be a single object spectroscopic facility, made by a two-arms high-efficiency spectrograph, able to cover the spectral range 350-2000 nanometer with a mean resolving power R$\approx$4500. While the purpose of the ETC is the estimate, to the best possible accuracy, of the Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR), the E2E model allows us to simulate the propagation of photons, starting from the scientific target of interest, up to the detectors. We detail the ETC and E2E architectures, computational models and functionalities. The interface of the E2E with external simulation modules and with the pipeline are described, too. Son of X-Shooter (SOXS) will be a high-efficiency spectrograph with a mean Resolution-Slit product of $\sim 4500$ over the entire band capable of simultaneously observing the complete spectral range 350-2000 nm. It consists of three scientific arms (the UV-VIS Spectrograph, the NIR Spectrograph, and the Acquisition Camera) connected by the Common Path system to the NTT, and the Calibration Unit. The Common Path is the backbone of the instrument and the interface to the NTT Nasmyth focus flange. The instrument project went through the Final Design Review in 2018 and is currently in Assembly Integration and test (AIT) Phase. This paper presents an adaptive control strategy for a boost rectifier supplying a varying resistive load. The interconnecting boost rectifier is supplied to a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) machine connected to a diesel engine. An online load estimation technique has been proposed to determine changes in the DC terminal's loading conditions. Simultaneously, a feed-forward controller is formulated to enhance the performance of the DC link voltage and converter currents by modifying the conventional voltage-oriented control technique. The proposed analysis has been validated in the MATLAB Simulink environment. The designed technique provides better converter control and voltage stability under dynamic conditions.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a fatty acid present in high amount in fish, modulates immune response and stimulates myelin gene expression. In the present paper, we investigated the effects of EPA in an established animal model for multiple sclerosis (MS): experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced in dark agouti rats. Diets supplemented either with 0.2% or 0.4% of EPA were administrated daily from the day of induction until the end of experiment. One group of rats received diet supplemented with 0.2% of EPA 10 days before induction. The control group (immunized rats) was fed with chow diet. The animals were analyzed at two different stages of the disease: during the acute phase (14 d.p.i.) and during the recovery phase (32 d.p.i.). We showed a delayed onset of clinical severity of disease in all groups of rats fed EPA-supplemented diets. This effect was associated to an increased expression of myelin proteins and an improved integrity of the myelin sheath as well as an up-regulation of FoxP3 expression in the central nervous system during the acute phase of EAE. No significant changes in T cell subsets were noted at the periphery. On the contrary, during the recovery phase of EAE, in animals assuming EPA-supplemented diet, an increase of CD4(+)CD25(+) and CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) in peripheral lymphocytes was noted. Our results indicate that EPA-supplemented diets may provide benefits to MS patients.

Objective: Cognitive impairment, more often involving memory and/or executive functions, has been reported in obsessive–compulsive (OC) patients. The present study aimed at: i) replicating, in an independent sample, previous findings by our group showing neurocognitive slowness limited to executive tasks; ii) assessing the influence of deficit in general cognitive abilities on executive dysfunction. Method: A comprehensive neuropsychological battery was administered to 30 drug-free OC patients and 30 healthy controls. Results: Obsessive–compulsive patients performed worse on visuospatial tests, were slower on executive tasks, and performed worse on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. After covarying for Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised performance Intellectual Quotient, a lesser degree of executive dysfunction was observed. Conclusion: Obsessive–compulsive patients exhibit an impairment of executive functions, especially when tasks also require visuospatial abilities. The impairment might reflect a hyperactivity of the executive control.

Summary Purpose: To investigate the neurochemical pattern in patients with benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy (BAFME/FAME), an inherited form of myoclonic epilepsy, by proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Methods: Eleven BAFME patients from three families showing linkage to 2p11.1-q12.2 were compared with 11 age-matched healthy control subjects. Results: MR imaging of all the patients and healthy subjects exhibited no structural abnormalities on detailed visual assessment. However, compared with healthy subjects, patients with BAFME displayed elevated choline/creatine ratio in the cerebellar cortex (p = 0.01), whereas there was no significant difference for the other ratios. No 1H-MRS values in the frontal and occipital cortex differed significantly in the patients compared with the healthy controls. No correlation was detected between 1H-MRS values and disease duration (p = −0.35) as well as myoclonus severity (p = −0.48). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the cerebellum is a prominent site of dysfunction in BAFME. The abnormal choline concentrations could reflect changes in the chemical and functional nature of cell membranes. 1H-MRS was able to detect brain changes also in patients with recent disease onset and may be a useful tool supporting the diagnosis based on familial and electrophysiologic data. The relationship between cortical tremor and the cerebellum is also discussed.
