- Abstract
Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the decays B0 → D(*)+D(*)-. We observe one candidate signal event for the decay B0 → D*+D*- with an expected background of 0.022 ±0.011 events. This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of B(B0 → D*+D*-) = [5.3-3.7 +7.1(stat) ± 1.0(syst)] × 10-4 and an upper limit of B(B0 → D*+D*-) < 2.2 × 10-3 at the 90% C.L. We see no significant excess of signal above the expected background level in the other modes, and we calculate the 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fractions to be B(B0 → D*±D*∓) < 1.8 × 10-3 and B(B0 → D+ D-) < 1.2 × 10-3.

Events with a large rapidity gap in deep inelastic scattering with Q2 greater-than-or-equal-to 10 GeV2 have been studied in the ZEUS detector. The properties of these events with W > 140 GeV are consistent with a leading twist diffractive production mechanism. In the laboratory frame, with E(T)jet greater-than-or-equal-to 4 GeV, 15% of the events are of the 1-jet type with negligible 2-jet production. The single jet is back-to-back in azimuth with the scattered electron. No energy flow is observed between the jet and the proton direction. With a lower jet transverse energy cut 2-jet production is observed both in the laboratory and the gamma*p centre-of-mass systems, demonstrating the presence of hard scattering in the virtual photon proton interactions that give rise to large rapidity gap events.

Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively. A measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelastic ep scattering for gamma*p centre-of-mass energies 75 < W < 175 GeV and momentum transfer squared 10 < Q(2) < 160 GeV2 from the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The differential charged particle rates in the gamma*p centre-of-mass system as a function of the scaled longitudinal momentum, x(F), and of the transverse momentum, p(t)* and [p(t)(*2)], as a function of x(F), W and Q(2) are given, Separate distributions are shown for events with (LRG) and without (NRG) a rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction. The data are compared with results from experiments at lower beam energies, with the naive quark parton model and with parton models including perturbative QCD corrections, The comparison shows the importance of the higher order QCD processes. Significant differences of the inclusive charged particle rates between NRG and LRG events at the same W are observed, The value of [p(t)(*2)] for LRG events with a hadronic mass M(X), which excludes the forward produced baryonic system, is similar to the [p(t)(*2)] value observed in fixed target experiments at W approximate to M(X).

- Abstract
We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F-2 in the range 3.5 x 10(-5) less than or equal to x less than or equal to 4 x 10(-3) and 1.5 GeV2 less than or equal to Q(2) less than or equal to 15 GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 300 GeV. The rise of F-2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q(2) range. The Q(2) evolution of F-2, even at the lowest Q(2) and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD.

We describe a measurement of B^0-B^0bar mixing parameters exploiting a method of partial reconstruction of the decay chains B0 -> D^{*-}��^+ and B0 -> D^{*-}��^+. Using 9.6 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we find ��_d = 0.198 +- 0.013 +- 0.014, |y_d, 11 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Using a sample of 3.3 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we measure the branching fraction for B -> rho l nu, |V_ub|, and the partial rate (Delta Gamma) in three bins of q^2 = (p_B-p_rho)^2. We find B(B^0 -> rho^- l^+ nu)=(2.69 +- 0.41^+0.35_-0.40 +- 0.50) 10^-4, |V_ub|=(3.23 +- 0.24^+0.23_-0.26 +- 0.58) 10^-3, Delta Gamma (0 < q^2 < 7 GeV^2/c^4) =(7.6 +- 3.0 ^+0.9_-1.2 +- 3.0) 10^-2 ns^-1, Delta Gamma (7 < q^2 < 14 GeV^2/c^4) =(4.8 +- 2.9 ^+0.7_-0.8 +- 0.7) 10^-2 ns^-1, and Delta Gamma (14 < q^2 < 21 GeV^2/c^4) = (7.1 +- 2.1^+0.9_-1.1 +- 0.6)10^-2 ns^-1. The quoted errors are statistical, systematic, and theoretical. The method is sensitive primarily to B -> rho l nu decays with leptons in the energy range above 2.3 GeV. Averaging with the previously published CLEO results, we obtain B(B^0 -> rho^- l^+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29^+0.33_-0.46 +- 0.41) 10^-4 and |V_{ub}| = (3.25 +- 0.14 ^+0.21_-0.29 +- 0.55) 10^-3., 35 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Deep inelastic e-p scattering has been studied in both the charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) reactions at momentum transfers squared Q2 above 400 GeV2 using the ZEUS detector at the HERA ep collider. The CC and NC total cross sections, the NC to CC cross section ratio, and the differential cross sections d/dQ2 are presented. From the Q2 dependence of the CC cross section, the mass term in the CC propagator is determined to be MW=76 16 13 GeV. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

A collaborative study was conducted using a modified AOAC method (sugars in chocolate) for the determination of fructose, glucose, sucrose, and maltose in presweetened cereals by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Eight samples consisting of 6 products were analyzed in duplicate by the HPLC method and the AOAC Lane-Eynon method. The AOAC method was modified to use water-alcohol (1 + 1) and Sep-Pak C18 cartridges for sample cleanup. The HPLC results indicate precision comparable to the Lane-Eynon method and the chocolate method. The modified HPLC method has been adopted official first action.

- Abstract
Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the decays B0 → D(*)+D(*)-. We observe one candidate signal event for the decay B0 → D*+D*- with an expected background of 0.022 ±0.011 events. This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of B(B0 → D*+D*-) = [5.3-3.7 +7.1(stat) ± 1.0(syst)] × 10-4 and an upper limit of B(B0 → D*+D*-) < 2.2 × 10-3 at the 90% C.L. We see no significant excess of signal above the expected background level in the other modes, and we calculate the 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fractions to be B(B0 → D*±D*∓) < 1.8 × 10-3 and B(B0 → D+ D-) < 1.2 × 10-3.

- Abstract
The total photoproduction cross section is determined from a measurement of electroproduction with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The Q2 values of the virtual photons are in the range 10-7 < Q2 < 2 × 10-2 GeV2. The γp total cross section in the γp centre of mass energy range 186-233 GeV is 154 ± 16 (stat.) ± 32 (syst.) μb.

- Abstract
We have studied charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states with kaons and pions and observe three new processes with the following branching fractions: ℬ(B → π+π-) = (4.3-1.4+1.6 ± 0.5) × 10-6, ℬ(B → K0π0) = (14.6-5.1-3.3+5.9+2.4) × 10-6, and ℬ(B → K±π0) = (11.6-2.7-1.3+3.0+1.4) × 10-6. We also update our previous measurements for the decays B → K±π∓ and B± → K0π±. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio Rchrg for the mean charged multiplicity observed in Y(1S)→ggγ events, 〈n±gluon〉, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e+e-→qq̄γ events, 〈n±quark〉. We find Rchrg≡〈n±gluon〉/〈n±quark〉=1.04 ±0.02(stat)±0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV.

Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (ETJ). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with ETJ > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with ETJ > 11 GeV. Calculated cross sections for resolved photon processes with 6 GeV < ETJ < 11 GeV lie below the data., 30 pages including 5 figures. Includes a reference mistakenly omitted in previous version

Physics letters / B 338(4), 483-496 (1994). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(94)90804-4, Energy flows in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are investigated at a centre-of-mass energy of 269 GeV for the range $Q^2 ≥ 10 \text{ GeV}^2$ using the ZEUS detector. A comparison is made between events with and without a large rapidity gap between the hadronic system and the proton direction. The energy flows, corrected for detector acceptance and resolution, are shown for these two classes of events in both the HERA laboratory frame and the Breit frame.
