Background: The thoracic inlet of blunt trauma patients may have pathologies that can be diagnosed on cervical spine computed tomography (CT) but that are not evident on concurrent portable chest radiography (pCXR). This retrospective investigation aimed to identify the prevalence of thoracic inlet pathologies on cervical spine CT and their importance by measuring the diagnostic performance of pCXR and the predictive factors of such abnormalities. Methods: This investigation was performed at a level-1 trauma center and included CT and concurrent pCXR of 385 consecutive adult patients (280 men, mean age of 47.6 years) who presented with suspected cervical spine injury. CT and pCXR findings were independently re-reviewed, and CT was considered the reference standard. Results: Traumatic, significant nontraumatic and nonsignificant pathologies were present at 23.4%, 23.6% and 58.2%, respectively. The most common traumatic diagnoses were pneumothorax (12.7%) and pulmonary contusion (10.4%). The most common significant nontraumatic findings were pulmonary nodules (8.1%), micronodules (6.8%) and septal thickening (4.2%). The prevalence of active tuberculosis was 3.4%. The sensitivity and positive predictive value of pCXR was 56.67% and 49.51% in diagnosing traumatic and 8.89% and 50% in significant nontraumatic pathologies. No demographic or pre-admission clinical factors could predict these abnormalities. Conclusions: Several significant pathologies of the thoracic inlet were visualized on trauma cervical spine CT. Since a concurrent pCXR was not sensitive and no demographic or clinical factors could predict these abnormalities, a liberal use of chest CT is suggested, particularly among those experiencing high-energy trauma with significant injuries of the thoracic inlet. If chest CT is not available, a meticulous evaluation of the thoracic inlet in the cervical spine CT of blunt trauma patients is important.

To determine whether a pelvis is wide enough for spontaneous delivery has long been the subject of obstetric research. A number of variables have been proposed as predictors, all with limited accuracy. In this study, we use a novel three-dimensional (3D) method to measure the female pelvis and assess which pelvic features influence birth mode. We compare the 3D pelvic morphology of women who delivered vaginally, women who had cesarean sections, and nulliparous women. The aim of this study is to identify differences in pelvic morphology between these groups.This observational study included women aged 50 years and older who underwent a CT scan of the pelvis for any medical indication. We recorded biometric data including height, weight, and age, and obtained the obstetric history. The bony pelvis was extracted from the CT scans and reconstructed in three dimensions. By placing 274 landmarks on each surface model, the pelvises were measured in detail. The pelvic inlet was measured using 32 landmarks. The trial was registered at the German Clinical Trials Register DRKS (DRKS00017690).For this study, 206 women were screened. Exclusion criteria were foreign material in the bony pelvis, unknown birth mode, and exclusively preterm births. Women who had both a vaginal birth and a cesarean section were excluded from the group comparison. We compared the pelvises of 177 women between three groups divided by obstetric history: vaginal births only (n = 118), cesarean sections only (n = 21), and nulliparous women (n = 38). The inlet area was significantly smaller in the cesarean section group (mean = 126.3 cmBy placing 274 landmarks on a pelvis reconstructed in 3D, a very precise measurement of the morphology of the pelvis is possible. We identified a significant difference in pelvic inlet area between women with vaginal delivery and those with cesarean section. A unique feature of this study is the method of measurement of the bony pelvis that goes beyond linear distance measurements as used in previous pelvimetric studies.

Sumps are commonly used in urban stormwater systems, which can be considered as a simple pretreatment device for stormwater quality control. However, they may function as pollution sources due to sediment washout under high flow conditions. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the scour process of predeposited sediments from a sump and its influencing parameters. Under conditions with large inflows or high sediment deposit, the sediment particles could be resuspended, entrained and flushed out. The washout mass decreased exponentially with time if the sediment bed surface depth was larger than a threshold value; otherwise, the amount of washout would be much smaller. The same scour pattern was observed for all the testing cases, of which the largest scour depth always occurred below the outlet. The deposit below the inlet might increase under conditions with high flow rates and low levels of sediment bed. Dimension analysis was performed and principal non-dimensional parameters were found, including the Péclet number, the pipe Froude number, and the dimensionless particle diameter, which can be used to determine whether the washout would occur and its intensity in a stormwater sump under given conditions.

Wetland restoration is an important water quality and climate resilience strategy. Wetland restoration rarely considers tradeoffs at large spatial and temporal scales, which limits capacity to aid decision makers. High resolution data can reveal hundreds to thousands of possible restoration options across a landscape, but guidance for setting restoration targets at these scales is limited. This study uses structured decision making (SDM) as a process for evaluating the desirability of numerous restoration options, with a case study on the Outer Coastal Plain of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, USA. The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with federal, state, and nonprofit organizations, evaluated a decision to target large-scale wetland restoration based on two fundamental objectives: improve water quality and enhance climate resilience. A total of 964 potentially restorable alternatives were delineated across the study area. The alternatives were evaluated on seven water quality and climate resilience criteria. High-priority alternatives were mapped based on multi-criteria ranking methods and principal component analysis. Sensitivity analysis included varying nutrient load data, implementing multiple ranking methods with different assumptions, and varying criteria weights. The maps revealed seven distinct regions of restoration opportunities. Tradeoffs were evaluated to distinguish between desirable and less desirable regions. Results indicated that three regions were promising choices to initiate landowner engagement and outreach. This study highlights the advantages of SDM to structure large-scale restoration decisions. In doing so, our work offers a roadmap toward further developing SDM in future applied restoration contexts.

Biological communities in freshwater streams are often impaired by multiple stressors (e.g., flow or water quality) originating from anthropogenic activities such as urbanization, agriculture, or energy extraction. Restoration efforts in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, USA seek to improve biological conditions in 10% of freshwater tributaries and to protect the biological integrity of existing healthy watersheds. To achieve these goals, resource managers need to better understand which stressors are most likely driving biological impairment. Our study addressed this knowledge gap through two approaches: 1) reviewing and synthesizing published multi-stressor studies, and 2) examining 303(d) listed impairments linked to biological impairment as identified by jurisdiction regulatory agencies (the states within the watershed and the District of Columbia). Results identified geomorphology (i.e., physical habitat), salinity, and toxic contaminants as important for explaining variability in benthic community metrics in the literature review. Geomorphology (i.e., physical habitat and sediment), salinity, and nutrients were the most reported stressors in the jurisdictional impairment analysis. Salinity is likely a major stressor in urban and mining settings, whereas geomorphology was commonly reported in agricultural settings. Toxic contaminants, such as pesticides, were rarely measured; more research is needed to quantify the extent of their effects in the region. Flow alteration was also highlighted as an important urban stressor in the literature review but was rarely measured in the literature or reported by jurisdictions as a cause of impairment. These results can be used to prioritize stressor monitoring by managers, and to improve stressor identification methods for identifying causes of biological impairment.

Cook Inlet beluga whales (CIBs) Delphinapterus leucas are Critically Endangered and genetically distinct from other beluga populations in Alaska. CIBs are exposed to numerous natural and anthropogenic sources of mortality and morbidity. This study describes congenital defects observed in 2 CIB calves. The first case, an aborted fetus, was characterized by lack of a peduncle and flukes, anorectal and genitourinary dysgenesis, and probable biliary dysplasia. The second case, a male calf, had a perineal groove defect and suspected secondary peritonitis; it also had a systemic herpesvirus infection. Further studies are needed to determine if such defects are due to genetic mutation, infectious diseases, nutritional imbalances, or contaminant exposure.

In March and April 2018, we carried out a survey of myxosporean parasites in coastal fishes collected from Nha Trang Bay in Vietnam's East Sea. Of the 159 fish specimens, 18 fish species were represented, belonging to 10 families. In 8 host species, 7 myxosporean species were found, representing the genera Kudoa and Unicapsula. Two of these species were new to science: Kudoa igori n. sp. from the gallbladder of Longarm mullet Osteomugil cunnesius (Valenciennes, 1836) (prevalence 10%) and Kudoa borimiri n. sp. from skeletal muscles of Longarm mullet and Longfinned mullet Osteomugil perusii (Valenciennes, 1836) (prevalence 30% and 60%, respectively). Vegetative stages were not found. Spores of K. igori n. sp. were small, orbicular to quadrate in apical view, and with four equal valves. In lateral view, spores were shallowly ovoid with a slightly protruding anterior pole. The 4 polar capsules were slightly unequal sizes and were oriented toward the apex of the spore. Dimensions were as follows: spore length 4.56 ± 0.22 (4.18-4.56), thickness 4.42 ± 0.39 (3.55-5.13), width 5.74 ± 0.46 (4.66-6.50), length of biggest polar capsule 1.38 ± 0.14 (1.1-1.65), middle 1.28 ± 0.12 (1.03-1.53), smallest 1.13 ± 0.11 (0.94-1.30), width of biggest polar capsule 1.03 ± 0.14 (0.83-1.4), middle 0.92 ± 0.12 (0.76-1.08), smallest 0.74 ± 0.12 (0.55-0.94). Spores of K. borimiri n. sp. had four equal valves with slightly rounded ends and were quadrate in apical view. In lateral view, spores were broadly deltoid. Four equal-sized polar capsules opened at the apex of the spore. In O. cunnesius, spore dimensions were as follows: length 3.51 ± 0.15 (3.34-3.92), thickness 3.65 ± 0.38 (2.79-4.21), width 4.97 ± 0.37 (4.13-5.97), length of the polar capsules 1.23 ± 0.18 (0.99-1.57), width 0.88 ± 0.07 (0.70-1.00). Overlapping dimensions for K. borimiri n. sp. spores were also found in O. perusii. Other known myxozoan species we encountered were Kudoa thyrsites and Kudoa whippsi, which had not previously been reported from the East Sea and Vietnam. We also encountered Kudoa monodactyli, which had not previously been reported from Nha Trang Bay. In addition, we report 2 additional species, a Kudoa sp. and a Unicapsula sp., that were not attributable to previously described myxozoans and need further investigation to completely characterize.

A new species of free-living marine nematode Chromaspirina aliapapillata sp. nov. from the Donuzlav Bay (Black Sea) is described. Chromaspirina aliapapillata sp. nov. is characterized by a slender body, buccal cavity with two dorsal teeth, spiral amphids, tail conico-cylindrical and presence of precloacal supplements. The new species differs from other known species of the genus by having two dorsal teeth and presence of 17 to 21 precloacal supplements of which one or two are cup-shaped and rest curved tubes.

Background: Ultrasonography is often used in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, we were unable to find normative data regarding the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve in the Singapore population as measured by ultrasound. The aims of this study were to establish normative values of the CSA of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel inlet in a healthy population, 5 cm proximal to the carpal tunnel inlet, and to determine if the CSA correlated with side, age, gender or race. Methods: Sixty-nine wrists of 36 healthy subjects with no history of wrist injury or any signs and symptoms of CTS were examined. The CSA of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel inlet and 5 cm proximal to the carpal tunnel inlet was determined using ultrasound by a trained operator. Results: The mean CSA of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel inlet was 6.41 mm2 (SD 2.18 mm2). These were not significantly different from the values for mean CSA obtained 5 cm proximal to the carpal tunnel inlet. We did not find any correlation between the CSA of the median nerve and age, gender or race. Conclusions: The mean CSA of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel inlet in normal subjects in Singapore was found to be lower than other Asian populations. Wide variations of the median nerve CSA at the carpal tunnel inlet exists in the literature, and this is probably due to the heterogeneity of the study methodology and population. The largest known reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) population in Africa has been monitored for more than 20 years at several locations on the coast of the Inhambane Province in southern Mozambique. Nonetheless, before this study, little had been reported on the population dynamics of M. alfredi from Závora, a remote bay in the region. Photographic mark-recapture was used to investigate the size and structure of M. alfredi that aggregate at "Red Sands," a reef cleaning station in Závora Bay. An 11 year photographic data set was used to identify 583 M. alfredi individuals between 2010 and 2021. More than half of M. alfredi individuals were resighted at least once, with most encounters (up to 18 for one individual) occurring during the peak sighting period in July-November each year. An even sex ratio was observed, 44% females and 50% males, with no significant difference in resightings between the sexes. Pollock's robust design population models were used to estimate annual abundance, emigration, annual apparent survival and capture probability at Red Sands from July to November over a 6 year period (2016-2021). Abundance estimates varied year to year, ranging from 35 (95% c.i. [30, 45]) up to 233 (95% c.i. [224, 249]) M. alfredi individuals. Given the seasonal affinity of M. alfredi observed at Red Sands, this study highlights the importance of understanding fine-scale site use within the larger home range of this population to develop local management strategies.

Species-specific hematological reference values are essential for diagnosis and treatment of disease and maintaining overall health of animals. This information is lacking for many species of elasmobranchs maintained in zoos and aquaria, thus reducing the effectiveness of care for these animals. Descriptive statistics and reference intervals were calculated for hematocrit and complete blood cell counts, biochemistry and protein electrophoresis parameters, trace minerals, vitamins, heavy metals, reproductive hormones, and fatty acids in the blood of 153 wild Sand Tigers Carcharias taurus of both sexes and a range of sizes caught in Delaware Bay (Delaware, USA). Mean hematocrit, total white blood cell counts, lymphocyte differentials, glucose, phosphorus, amylase, and aspartate aminotransferase levels were significantly higher in juveniles than in adults. Levels of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and differences in selenium and eicosapentaenoic acid (a polyunsaturated fatty acid) between males and females suggest that they are important parameters for improving Sand Tiger breeding success in managed care. Finally, blood metal levels for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury suggest low levels of contaminant exposure for Sand Tigers during their summer residence in Delaware Bay. The results of this study provide baseline health parameters for wild Sand Tigers that will aid in effective maintenance of aquarium animals and contribute to a greater understanding of the biology of these sharks and efforts to accomplish sustainable management of their populations.

Coastal rivers contributed the majority of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loads to coastal waters, often resulting in eutrophication and hypoxia zones. Accurate N source identification is critical for optimizing coastal river N pollution control strategies. Based on a 2-year seasonal record of dual stable isotopes (δ15N-NO– 3 and δ18O-NO– 3) and water quality parameters, this study combined the dual nitrate (NO– 3) stable isotope method and the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model to elucidate N dynamics and sources in two coastal rivers of Hangzhou Bay. Water quality/trophic level indices indicated light-to-moderate eutrophication status for the studied rivers. Spatio-temporal variability of water quality was associated with seasonal agricultural, aquaculture and domestic activities, as well as the seasonal precipitation pattern. The APCS-MLR model identified soil + domestic wastewater (69.5%) and aquaculture tailwater (22.2%) as the major nitrogen pollution sources. Further, the dual stable isotope method identified soil N, aquaculture tailwater, domestic wastewater and atmospheric deposition N contributions of 35.3 ±21.1%, 29.7 ±17.2%, 27.9 ±14.5%, and 7.2 ±11.4% to riverine NO– 3 in the Cao’e River (CER) and 34.4 ±21.3%, 29.5 ±17.2%, 27.4 ±14.7%, and 8.7 ±12.8% in the Jiantang River (JTR), respectively. The APCS-MLR model and dual stable isotope method showed consistent results for riverine N source identification. Combining these two methods for riverine N source identifications effectively distinguished the mix-source components from the APCS-MLR method and alleviated the high cost of stable isotope analysis, thereby providing reliable N source apportionment results with low requirements for water quality sampling and isotope analysis costs. Moreover, this study highlights the importance of soil N management and aquaculture tailwater treatment in coastal river N pollution control.

The occurrence, spatial distribution, and source analysis of antibiotics in global coastal waters and estuaries are not well documented or understood. Therefore, the distribution of 14 antibiotics in inflowing river and bay water of Taizhou Bay, East China Sea, was studied. Thirteen antibiotics, excluding roxithromycin (ROM), were all detected in inflowing river and bay water. The total antibiotic concentrations in bay water ranged from 3126.62 to 26,531.48 ng/L, which were significantly higher than those in the inflowing river (17.20-25,090.25 ng/L). Macrolides (MAs) and sulfonamides (SAs) were dominant in inflowing river (accounting for 24.40% and 74.9% of the total antibiotic concentrations, respectively), while SAs in bay water (93.6% of the total concentrations). Among them, clindamycin (CLI) (concentration range: ND-8414 ng/L, mean 1437.59 ng/L) and sulfadimidine (SMX) (ND-25,184.00 ng/L, mean concentrations: 9107.88 ng/L) were the highest in those surface water samples. Source analysis showed that MAs and SAs in the inflowing river mainly came from the wastewater discharge of the surrounding residents and pharmaceutical companies, while SAs in the bay water mainly came from surrounding industrial activities and mariculture. However, the contribution of the inflowing river to the bay water cannot be ignored. The risk assessment showed that SMX and ofloxacin (OFX) have potential ecological risks. These data will support the various sectors of the environment in developing management strategies and to prevent antibiotic pollution.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a tumor disease that affects all sea turtle species but is mainly seen in green turtles Chelonia mydas. The pathology of FP has been described extensively, but its dynamics in populations over time have been less studied. We analyzed the dynamics of FP in a population of green turtles in Akumal Bay on the central coast of the Mexican Caribbean. A total of 475 green turtles were captured over 15 yr (2004-2018). The highest prevalence of FP was found in the largest turtles, and there was a positive relationship between FP prevalence and size of turtles. FP was first detected in 2008 at a prevalence of 1.6%, and annual prevalence increased markedly from 17.9% in 2015 to 54% by 2018. Likewise, severity of FP increased over time, with most turtles falling into moderately to severely diseased categories (tumor score 2). The average size of turtles with FP was significantly larger than the size of individuals without FP. Regression of tumors was seen in 21% of turtles, tumor score was higher in smaller individuals, and only tumor score 2 was present in the largest sea turtles. An increase in the prevalence and tumor score of FP coincided with the massive arrival of Sargassum in 2015, suggesting that altered environmental conditions may have played a role. The increased prevalence of FP in Akumal Bay prompts the need to explain what might be driving this phenomenon and how widespread it is in the Caribbean.

Mechanical heart valves (MHV) and its fluid dynamics inside a pulsatile pediatric ventricular assist device (PVAD) can be associated with blood degradation. In this article, flow structures are analyzed and compared by an experimental investigation on the effect of bileaflet MHV positioned at varying angles in the inlet port orifice of a PVAD.Time-resolved particle image velocimetry was applied to characterize the internal flow of the device. St Jude Medical bileaftlet valves were used on the inlet orifice and positioned at 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° in relation to the centerline of the device. Three planes with bidimensional velocity magnitude fields were considered in the analysis with visualization of diastolic jets, device wall washing patterns and flow circulation during emptying or systole of the pump. Also, the washing vortex area, and vertical velocity probabilities of regurgitant flows in the inlet valve were evaluated.The results show that a variation in the angle of the MHV at the inlet port produced distinct velocities, fluid structures, and regurgitant flow probabilities within the device. MHV positioned at an angle of 0° generated the strongest inlet jet, larger vortex area during filling, more prominent outgoing flow, and less regurgitation compared to the angles studied. The presence of unfavorable fluid structures, such as small vortices, and/or sudden flow structure interruption, and/or regurgitation, were identified at 45° and 90° angles.The 0° inlet angle had better outcomes than other angles due to its consistency in the multiple parameters analyzed.

Phytoplankton growth in estuaries is regulated by a complex combination of physical factors with freshwater discharge usually playing a dominating role controlling nutrient and light availability. The role of other factors, including upwelling-generating winds, is still unclear because most estuaries are too small for upwelling to emerge. In this study, we used remotely sensed proxies of phytoplankton biomass and concentration of suspended mineral particles to compare the effect of river discharge with the effect of upwelling events associated with persistent along-channel southerly winds in the Chesapeake Bay, a large estuary where upwelling and its effects on biogeochemical dynamics have been previously reported. The surface chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a) were estimated from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite data using the Generalized Stacked-Constraints Model (GSCM) corrected for seasonal effects by comparing remotely sensed and field-measured data. Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are a cosmopolitan species but are only found in ice-free regions of the ocean. It is unknown how their distribution might change in regions undergoing rapid loss of sea ice and ocean warming like Baffin Bay in the eastern Canadian Arctic. In 2014 and 2018, sperm whales were sighted near Eclipse Sound, Baffin Bay: the first recorded uses of this region by sperm whales. In this study, we investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of sperm whales near Eclipse Sound using visual and acoustic data. We combine several published open-source, data sets to create a map of historical sperm whale presence in the region. We use passive acoustic data from two recording sites between 2015 and 2019 to investigate more recent presence in the region. We also analyze regional trends in sea ice concentration (SIC) dating back to 1901 and relate acoustic presence of sperm whales to the mean SIC near the recording sites. We found no records of sperm whale sightings near Eclipse Sound outside of the 2014/2018 observations. Our acoustic data told a different story, with sperm whales recorded yearly from 2015 to 2019 with presence in the late summer and fall months. Sperm whale acoustic presence increased over the 5-year study duration and was closely related to the minimum SIC each year. Sperm whales, like other cetaceans, are ecosystem sentinels, or indicators of ecosystem change. Increasing number of days with sperm whale presence in the Eclipse Sound region could indicate range expansion of sperm whales as a result of changes in sea ice. Monitoring climate change-induced range expansion in this region is important to understand how increasing presence of a top-predator might impact the Arctic food web.

Shipping is increasing in Arctic regions, exposing marine mammals to increased underwater noise. Noise analyses often use unweighted broadband sound pressure levels (SPL) to assess noise impacts, but this does not account for the animals' hearing abilities at different frequencies. In 2018 and 2019, noise levels were recorded at five and three sites, respectively, along a shipping route in an inlet of Northern Baffin Island, Canada. Gravid Anopheles malaria vectors depend on both chemical and physical (including microbial) cues for selection of preferred habitats for oviposition. This study focused on assessing the effects of bacterial composition and habitat metabolites on malaria vector larval availability in irrigated and non-irrigated potential larval sources. Water samples were collected from larval positive and negative habitats in the irrigated and non- irrigated areas of Homa Bay county. Bacteria cultured from the water samples were subjected to Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for species identification. DNA was extracted from the colonies and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing done. Finally, the metabolite composition of larval positive and negative habitats was determined. MALDI-TOF MS results revealed that Bacillus was the only genera identified from larval sources in the non-irrigated zone. In the irrigated area, Shigella was the dominant genera (47%) while Escherichia coli was the abundant species (13/51). Of the sequenced isolates, 65% were Bacillus. Larvicidal isolates Brevibacillus brevis, Bacillus subtilis, and Exiguobacterium profundum were isolated and grouped with Bacillus mojavensis, Bacillus tequilensis, Bacillus stercoris, and Brevibacillus agri. Irrigated areas with larvae had reduced crude fat (0.01%) and protein content (0.13%) in comparison to those without larvae. In irrigated and non- irrigated areas, larval presence was evident in habitats with high total chlorophyll content (1.12 μg/g vs 0.81μg/g and 3.37 μg/g vs 0.82). Aquatic habitats with larvae in both irrigated and non-irrigated areas exhibited higher sugar concentration than habitats without larvae; however, when compared, non-irrigated areas with larvae had higher sugar concentration than similar habitats in irrigated areas. In addition, substantial concentrations of Manganese, Calcium, and Copper were found in aquatic habitats containing larvae in both irrigated and non-irrigated areas. These results allow for prospective examination as potential larvicidal or adulticidal agents and could be considered when designing potential vector control interventions.

The number, size and severity of aquatic low-oxygen dead zones are increasing worldwide. Microbial processes in low-oxygen environments have important ecosystem-level consequences, such as denitrification, greenhouse gas production and acidification. To identify key microbial processes occurring in low-oxygen bottom waters of the Chesapeake Bay, we sequenced both 16S rRNA genes and shotgun metagenomic libraries to determine the identity, functional potential and spatiotemporal distribution of microbial populations in the water column. Unsupervised clustering algorithms grouped samples into three clusters using water chemistry or microbial communities, with extensive overlap of cluster composition between methods. Clusters were strongly differentiated by temperature, salinity and oxygen. Sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms were found to be enriched in the low-oxygen bottom water and predictive of hypoxic conditions. Metagenome-assembled genomes demonstrate that some of these sulfur-oxidizing populations are capable of partial denitrification and transcriptionally active in a prior study. These results suggest that microorganisms capable of oxidizing reduced sulfur compounds are a previously unidentified microbial indicator of low oxygen in the Chesapeake Bay and reveal ties between the sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen cycles that could be important to capture when predicting the ecosystem response to remediation efforts or climate change.

The solitary entoproct species, Loxosomella diopatricola is recorded from the Bay of Bengal, southeastern coast of India. The species was found on the eunicid polychaete Diopatra sp. collected from depth of 15 m. Loxosomella diopatricola is a medium-sized species with average body length up to 396 µm, eight tentacles and oval in calyx shape. The Loxosomella diopatricola was first time recorded in India. A list of all Loxosomella species associated with polychaetes is given.

Human males are larger than females in body size; females are larger than males in pelvic size. Percentage pelvic sexual size dimorphism (sex with larger mean/sex with lower mean*100%) is used to infer selection for obstetric adaptation. As pelvic size is associated with body size, interpretation of percentage sexual size dimorphism necessitates control of body size. This study uses a larger sample of 221 females and 204 males to identify a subsample of females and males matched for femoral length, femoral head diameter, and clavicular length (25 females, 46 males). For five measures of the pelvic inlet, the human sample with control of body size is compared with three primate species that are sexually monomorphic in body size and give birth to newborns with higher relative body masses than those of humans: Aotus azarae (15 females, 19 males), Hylobates lar (29 females, 29 males), and Saguinus geoffroyi (28 females, 30 males). Results show that humans (112.0%) have the highest percentage sexual size dimorphism of pelvic inlet circumference: A. azarae (108.2%), H. lar (105.4%), and S. geoffroyi (103.3%). Humans have higher sexual size dimorphism of inlet circumference despite lower relative newborn body mass compared to the other species because human newborns are of larger body mass than predicted for an anthropoid with our adult female body mass. In humans, birthing of bigger babies than predicted for our body mass increases selection pressure on females for enlargement of the pelvic inlet.

In chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) homed to the Sanriku region, Japan, most of the fish are matured in bays and spawn near river mouths in coastal short rivers; therefore, their upriver migration is extremely short, but their behavioural characteristics have remained unknown. Upriver migration in the Otsuchi River, a typical coastal river, was evaluated from behavioural and physiological aspects. Homing salmon tracked in Otsuchi Bay held in the inner bay for less than 1 day to more than 10 days before river entry. The varied holding duration was negatively correlated with plasma 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) concentration, an indicator of maturation. After river entry, however, most fish were captured in weirs near the river mouths within 2 days regardless of the DHP concentration. Of the 34 fish released in the river, on the contrary, eighteen and five fish were seen next day in the main spawning sites located at c. 1.5 km upstream and in the branch creek, respectively, and 85% of the fish held position there until their death. The mean survival time of released fish was 5.8 days. Plasma DHP level suggested that preparations for spawning were already completed at the timing of the release. Taken together, homing salmon completed spawning preparation in the bay, and then they moved to their spawning sites immediately after river entry and spawned there during their short remaining life. This upriver migration contrasts with those of other populations, such as early migrants and long river migrants, whose maturation is completed during upriver migration.

In this study, prometryne and prometon were extracted and preconcentrated from aqueous media using an online solid-phase extraction–thermal desorption method coupled with gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC-FID), equipped with two different inlets: split and programmable temperature vaporizer (PTV). For this purpose, the applicability of Tenax and a metal–organic framework were investigated as solid-phase sorbents. Several effective parameters on the extraction efficiency, such as the amount of sorbent, sample volume, sample pH and thermal desorption procedure were optimized. The analytical performance of the proposed methods showed an excellent linear dynamic range for prometon and prometryne (0.25–100 μg/L) and relative standard deviation less than 4.01%. Moreover, the detection limits below 0.20 and 0.35 μg/L were determined for prometon and prometryne, respectively. Additionally, molecular docking was applied to clarify the adsorption nature and binding energy of MIL-101(Cr) toward the studied analytes, which indicated an appropriate correlation between computational and experimental results. Finally, the proposed method was developed and validated for prometon and prometryne and successfully applied for their extraction from agricultural water, spiked with prometon and prometryne through its direct introduction into the GC inlet.

In Chesapeake Bay in the United States, decades of management efforts have resulted in modest reductions of nutrient loads from the watershed, but the corresponding improvements in estuarine water quality have not consistently followed. Generalized additive models were used to directly link river flows and nutrient loads from the watershed to nutrient trends in the estuary on a station-by-station basis, which allowed for identification of exactly when and where responses are happening. Results show that Chesapeake Bay's total nitrogen and total phosphorus conditions are mostly improving after accounting for variation in freshwater flow. Almost all of these improving nutrient concentrations in the estuary can be explained by reductions in watershed loads entering through 16 rivers and 145 nearby point sources, with the nearby point source reductions being slightly more effective at explaining estuarine nutrient trends. Overall, these two major types of loads from multiple locations across the watershed are together necessary and responsible for the improving estuarine nutrient conditions, a finding that is highly relevant to managing valuable estuarine resources worldwide.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) accumulation in the bile is a reliable biomarker of recent exposure to environmental PAH and elevated concentrations have been identified as significant risk factors for hepatic disease in some fish species. Recent surveys (spring 2019) revealed a high incidence of hepatic lesions in white perch Morone americana from Chesapeake Bay, but this initial survey did not detect an association between PAH metabolites and lesions. Seasonal sampling of fish was extended through the winter 2020 to increase the metabolite and hepatic lesion database and better understand annual PAH exposures to white perch. Naphthalenes, phenanthrenes, and benzo[a]pyrenes (equivalents) were analyzed in bile specimens (n = 400) using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Mean concentrations of metabolites were highest in fish collected from the urbanized Severn River in summer and were lowest in fish from the more rural Choptank River in winter. Variance in metabolite concentrations were primarily due to location and season. Seasonal fluctuations in water temperature, river discharge, or feeding status had little influence on the pattern of metabolite concentrations observed. The results suggest higher exposures of fish to environmental PAH in the more developed Severn River with significant increases during summer, which could correspond to a spike in seasonal recreational motor boat use or other human activities. A better understanding of the factors that contribute to variability in PAH metabolism and the enterohepatic biliary circulation in white perch will improve the usefulness of biliary metabolites as a biomarker of PAH exposure in Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere.

Contaminant substances consist of chemical elements that present the potential to adversely impact the ecology of the environment, thus representing a threat to local fauna and flora. In this context, heavy metals are critical agents that, depending on the nature and level, are potentially toxic to living organisms. In order to evaluate the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the Santos estuary and to determine the potential influence of salinity gradient on the heavy metal bioconcentration, the present study measured the concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn in two bivalve species (Crassostrea rhizophorae and Perna Perna) sampled at different sites of Santos Bay, in the southeastern region of Brazil. Throughout the study, the "sentinel species" used were effective in bioaccumulating contaminants. In oysters, based on the Brazilian legislation, critical limits were exceeded for As, Zn, Cu, and Cr. In the case of mussels, on the other hand, only for As, Zn, and Cr, the critical limits were overcome. In the present study, obtained data suggested salinity as a determinant parameter in As incorporation processes of bivalve mollusks. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The present study presents important results for the development of environmental management policies in estuarine environments. The present study points out differences between different organisms as biomonitors, providing subsidies for the decision of an effective biomonitoring program. The present study discusses values of contaminants as a danger to public health in Santos Bay, which can be extrapolated to other similar environments around the world.

Background Young people need equitable access to high-quality sexual and reproductive health care to enjoy good sexual health. Methods This online survey of people aged 15–24 years in a defined region of New Zealand asked about unmet need for sexual health care and sought views on improving access to sexual health care. Results Five hundred participants took part in the study between August and October 2020, of whom 60% were female, 25% were of Māori (indigenous) ethnicity, and 21.4% were gender and/or sexuality diverse. Sixty percent had ever received sexual health care (300/500), and 74.3% received it from a general practice clinic (223/300). Overall, 41% (204/500) reported they needed, but had not received sexual health care in the past (‘unmet need’). Reasons for unmet need included being shy, embarrassed or ashamed (74.5%, 152/204), fear of judgment by clinic staff (42.6%, 87/204), cost (32.8%, 67/204), concerns about confidentiality (28.9%, 59/204), and not knowing where to go (24%, 49/204). Māori participants were more likely to report not knowing where to go (32.1% vs 20%, P = 0.04). Participants identified the need to reduce stigma, normalise sexual health care, improve convenience, affordability and awareness of services as key to improving access. Reassurance about confidentiality and being treated with kindness, empathy and respect were deemed critical to service acceptability. Conclusions Action is urgently needed at policy, funding and practice levels to improve access to services by: reducing societal stigma, normalising discussions around sexual health, improving affordability and raising awareness of services. Quality improvement is also needed in general practice to ensure young people can routinely access youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health care.

An investigative biomonitoring study was conducted along the coastal area of Laizhou Bay (China) to evaluate the impact of organic pollution on the clam Ruditapes philippinarum using bioaccumulation and multi-biomarker measurements. In addition, the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and nonylphenol (NP) content in surface sediment at the study sites were also analyzed. Concentrations of PCBs, TPHs and NP in the sediments of the study area were 1.90 ± 0.10 μg kg−1, 39.55 ± 2.42 mg kg−1, 9.23 ± 0.41 μg kg−1 dry weight, respectively, while the organic contaminants in the soft tissues of R. philippinarum were 14.81 ± 0.96 μg kg−1 for PCBs, 165.87 ± 5.03 mg kg−1 for TPHs and 86.16 ± 5.29 μg kg−1 for NP. Linear regression analysis on the levels of organic pollutants accumulated in R. philippinarum and in sediments showed no significant correlation. Multi-biomarkers including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, total glutathione and lipid peroxidation were assayed in gills and digestive glands of R. philippinarum. Finally, the biomarkers in gills were selected to calculate the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) index and to evaluate the impact of the three organic contaminants on R. philippinarum collected from different sites. According to IBR results, the western coast and eastern coast exhibited higher environmental stress than the sampling sites along the southern coast of Laizhou Bay. Significant correlation was found between the level of organic contaminants in the sediments and IBR whereas no dependence was found between pollutants’ concentrations in sediments and separate biomarker responses. The results showed that PCBs and NP were the main organic pollutants among the three studied which have caused pollution pressure on R. philippinarum in Laizhou Bay coastal area.

The anthropogenic discharges of inorganic nutrients impact water quality, affecting the macroinvertebrate assemblage and food safety. The main objective of this study was to examine the seawater quality and macroinvertebrate dynamics in muddy habitats of Buenaventura Bay, Colombian Pacific. Macroinvertebrates were captured using artisanal trawl nets during different seasons and along four sampling sites. Multivariate analyses (canonical correspondence analysis and generalized additive model) were used to assess the effects of variations in nitrite, nitrates, phosphate concentrations, and physicochemical variables (salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen [DO], temperature, and total dissolved solids [TDS]) of water on the macroinvertebrate assemblage. Richness was the highest at sites with high salinity and temperature and low concentrations of nitrites and TDS. The densities of the commercial shrimp species Xiphopenaeus riveti and Rimapenaeus byrdi were the highest at sites with higher DO and alkalinity, and lower nitrate concentrations. The swimming crab Callinectes arcuatus was dominant at sites with low water quality. In summary, in the transitional season and at the inner sites of Buenaventura Bay, it was observed the lowest water quality due to high nitrate concentration. High nitrate concentration was highlighted as the main anthropogenic factor that could decrease the capture of target macroinvertebrate species for food and livelihoods of artisanal fishermen and their families. Thus, macroinvertebrate communities may be vulnerable to increased inorganic nutrient inputs, which could affect estuarine water quality and ecosystems services. In efforts to combat eutrophication, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has established aggressive nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment reduction goals for states and regulated dischargers within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Chesapeake Bay jurisdictions are struggling to meet the nutrient (N, P) reduction goals. This paper evaluates the efficacy of removing legacy N from groundwater as a compliance strategy for three potential classes of "buyers" of N reductions in the Chesapeake Bay watershed: permitted point sources, permitted municipal stormwater systems (called MS4s), and state nonpoint source (NPS) managers. We compare denitrifying spring bioreactors with conventional agricultural and urban NPS removal technologies using evaluative criteria important to each of these buyers. Results indicate that spring bioreactors compare favorably to other N removal technologies based on cost effectiveness, administrative costs, and certainty of N removal performance. Most conventional NPS technologies provide greater ancillary benefits. On balance, denitrifying spring bioreactors add a valuable compliance option to those tasked with achieving Bay N reduction goals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in vessel activity and associated noise have been reported globally. Sarasota Bay is home to a large and increasing number of recreational vessels as well as a long-term resident community of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus. Data were analyzed from two hydrophones to compare the soundscape during the COVID-19 pandemic to previous years (March–May 2020 and 2018/2019). Hourly metrics were calculated: vessel passes, 95th percentile sound levels [125 Hz and 16 kHz third octave bands (TOBs), and two broader bands: 88–1122 Hz and 1781–17 959 Hz], and dolphin whistle detection to understand changes in vessel activity and the effect on wildlife. Vessel activity increased during COVID-19 restrictions by almost 80% at one site and remained the same at the other site. Of the four sound level measures, only the 125 Hz TOB and 88–1122 Hz band increased with vessel activity at both sites, suggesting that these may be appropriate measures of noise from rapid pass-bys of small vessels in very shallow (

The diversity and distribution of culturable fouling bacteria in shellfish, fish and non-mariculture zones in Daya Bay were investigated by using a traditional culture-dependent approach combined with an analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences. A total of 129 isolates of fouling bacteria belonging to 37 species in 25 genera were collected and identified, which indicated that the three different mariculture zones harbored abundant and diverse fouling bacterial community. At the genus level, Pseudomonas, Arcobacter and Curtobacterium dominated the fouling bacterial community. Moreover, approximately 46% of the 37 representative isolates could form biofilms. After comparing the diversity and distribution of the biofilm-forming bacteria in three different mariculture zones, it was concluded that the ratios of biofilm-forming bacteria in shellfish (68.4%) and fish (63.4%) in mariculture zones were much greater than those in non-mariculture (42.0%) zone. These results provide important information, for the first time, regarding the fouling bacterial community in typical mariculture zones in South China, which will establish a foundation to develop strategies for biofilm control and disease defense.

Noncholera vibriosis is a rare, opportunistic bacterial infection caused by Vibrio spp. other than V. cholerae O1/O139 and diagnosed mainly during the hot summer months in patients after seaside activities. Detailed knowledge of circulating pathogenic strains and heterogeneities in infection outcomes and disease dynamics may help in patient management. We conducted a multicenter case-series study documenting Vibrio infections in 67 patients from 8 hospitals in the Bay of Biscay, France, over a 19-year period. Infections were mainly caused by V. alginolyticus (34%), V. parahaemolyticus (30%), non-O1/O139 V. cholerae (15%), and V. vulnificus (10%). Drug-susceptibility testing revealed intermediate and resistant strains to penicillins and first-generation cephalosporins. The acute infections (e.g., those involving digestive disorder, cellulitis, osteitis, pneumonia, and endocarditis) led to a life-threatening event (septic shock), amputation, or death in 36% of patients. Physicians may need to add vibriosis to their list of infections to assess in patients with associated risk factors.

To explore temporal and spatial effects on the planktonic prokaryotic community composition (PCC) in the coastal region of the Bohai Sea, surface water samples were collected from 12 to 28 regularly distributed sites in Bohai Bay across 3 months from different seasons to characterize the PCC using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 region. Prokaryotic α- and β-diversity showed significant temporal variation during the three sampling months. VPA analysis based on both weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances exhibited a shift of environmental and spatial effects on PCC variation with temporal variation. Quantification analysis of assembly processes on community turn over showed that “heterogeneous selection” dominated for PCC temporal variation, with basic abiotic parameters such as temperature, pH, ammonia nitrogen as the driving factors. Analysis of seasonal features showed that seasonal specific OTUs (ssOTUs) exhibited different seasonal attributions under the same phylum; meanwhile, the ssOTUs showed significant correlations with the driving environmental factors, which suggested that finer-level analysis was needed to more strictly reflect the temporal variation. Moreover, predicted nitrogen and sulfur metabolism were significantly shifted during the temporal variation. Our results clearly showed that seasonally varied environmental factors drive the “heterogeneous selection” process for PCC assembly in seawaters of Bohai Bay during different sampling seasons.

Microplastics widely exist in various environmental media and have become a global environmental problem. To investigate the pollution characteristics, deposition patterns, and influencing factors of microplastics in the sediments of bay beach, five typical beaches were selected in Xiamen Bay. According to the tidal variation, 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-30 cm sediment column samples were collected in layers at the high tide line, middle tide line, and low tide line at the same time, and the characteristics of the horizontal and vertical distribution of microplastics in the beach sediments were studied. Characterizing water quality in coastal waters through spatial observations is challenging, due to spatial and temporal variations in water composition. Nitrate, an important compound for water quality assessment, has received little attention in estimates made from satellite measurements, even though it can be estimated using models generated from multispectral images. Since nitrate is a non-optically active parameter that can be correlated with optically active parameters, it was related to bands of the visible and infrared spectrum, captured in Landsat-8 images, and used to generate empirical models to estimate the spatio-temporal variation of nitrate concentration in the Playa Colorada Bay, in the state of Sinaloa Northwest Mexico. Background Proximal junctional kyphosis is a common complication after posterior fusion in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and is correlated with postoperative changes of thoracic kyphosis. In lenke 5c patients, higher postoperative LL and spontaneous change of TK may produce an effect on final PJK. However, no studies has been performed to evaluate the correlation of PJK with thoracocervical parameters in patients with AIS. Methods Data from 98 patients who underwent posterior fusion for Lenke 5C AIS with 2 years of follow-up were retrospectively reviewed. Patients in the extended fusion group underwent fusion at levels higher than upper-end vertebra + 2 (n = 38), and those in the thoracolumbar/lumbar (TL/L) fusion group underwent fusion at UEV + 2 or lower (n = 60). Results During an average follow-up of 38.1 months, 23 of 98 patients developed PJK. The extended fusion group had a higher incidence of PJK than the TL/L fusion group (14/38 vs. 9/60, respectively; P = 0.01) and a significantly greater decrease in thoracic kyphosis than the TL/L group (P P Conclusions The preoperative TIA could be a predictor of PJK. Among patients with Lenke 5C AIS, those with a TIA of > 71° are more likely to develop PJK. Additionally, extended fusion in patients with Lenke 5C may increase the risk of PJK.

Objective The aim of this study to describe the presentation of double inlet left ventricle (DILV) very early in prenatal life, to assess its prevalence and to portray the associated anomalies. Methods This was a retrospective study which included all the women who attended our clinic for early fetal screening sonography, between 2006 and 2020. Most of the screening was done at 14-16 weeks of gestation (except one high risk pregnancy, which was performed at nine gestational weeks), and included an anatomic fetal scan and Doppler imaging. The diagnosis of DILV was done based on sonographic features of abnormal four-chamber view. Complete fetal echocardiography was carried out to rule out additional heart malformations. Results Out of 26,805 early prenatal transvaginal ultrasound screening examinations, 14 cases of DILV were diagnosed. The gestational age range of our DILV diagnosis was 9-16 gestational weeks. All pregnancies were terminated as per parental request. In five fetuses, a chromosomal analysis was performed, one had trisomy 21, and the rest fetuses had a normal karyotype. In two fetuses, an autopsy was performed and the diagnosis of DILV was confirmed in both. Conclusions Very early prenatal detection of DILV is possible and may have an implication in parent decision regarding their pregnancy future.

To evaluate the species diversity and strengthen the taxonomic identification of elasmobranchs in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, a study was conducted in the southeast coastal region between January 2016 and March 2018. Using morphological and genetic identification techniques, this study presents 22 species from the region. Thirteen of these are new records. The new records consist of eight species from the family Dasyatidae, and one each from Mobulidae, Rhinobatidae, Narcinidae, Hemiscylliidae and Triakidae. Furthermore, four occurrences are first verified reports, and five are potential new records requiring further taxonomic investigation.

Background Heart failure (HF) is a common disease globally. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are widely used to treat HF. In contrast to the natural heart, different VADs generate different blood flow waves in the aorta. Objective To explore whether the different inflow rate waveforms from the ascending aorta generate far-reaching hemodynamic influences on the human aortic arch. Methods An aortic geometric model was reconstructed based on computed tomography data of a patient with HF. A total of five numerical simulations were conducted, including a case with the inflow rate waveforms from the ascending aorta with normal physiological conditions, two HF, and two with typical VAD support. The hemodynamic parameters, wall shear stress (WSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), relative residence time (RRT), and the strength of the helical flow, were calculated. Results In contrast to the natural heart, numerical simulation showed HF decreasing WSS and inducing higher OSI and RRT. Moreover, HF weakened helical flow strength. Pulsatile flow VADs will elevated the WSS, inducing some helical flow, while continuous flow VAD could not produce any helical flow. Conclusions HF leads to an adverse hemodynamic environment by decreasing WSS and reducing the helical flow strength. Pulsatile flow VADs are more advantageous than the continuous flow VADs on hemodynamic effects. Thus, pulsatile flow VADs may be a better option for patients with HF.

Background: Biofortified staples have been promoted widely in sub-Saharan Africa to combat micronutrient deficiencies. Contemporary projects are increasingly using elementary schools to target households with these foods. Objective: This study assessed the effects of integrated nutrition education approaches, targeting preschoolers and their caregivers, on retention of orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) on farms in the second season after lapse of free vine dissemination initiatives. Methods: Rural farming households, with preschoolers and no prior engagement with OFSP, were targeted. A multistage sample of 431 preschooler–caregiver pairs was recruited for a cluster-randomized controlled trial. After issuing routine OFSP promotion activities, 15 village-level clusters of the pairs were randomized into 1 control group (3 villages) and 3 treatment arms (4 villages each) for the interventions. Baseline and follow-up household-level survey data were collected from the caregivers. The interventions included: (1) OFSP-branded exercise books, posters, and a poem to preschoolers only; (2) OFSP-oriented mobile phone mediated text messages to caregivers only; and (3) both 1 and 2 provided to individual households concurrently. Interventions 1 and 2 were single-channeled, while 3 was multichanneled. We estimated the intention-to-treat (ITT) and treatment-on-the-treated (TOT) effects using a binary logit model and a special regressor method, respectively. Results: Only the multi-channeled nutrition education approach had significant effects (ITT = 0.167, P = .001; TOT = .243, P = .007) on the caregivers’ likelihood to retain OFSP on their farms. Conclusions: The finding implies that multi-channeled agriculture nutrition education interventions through Early Childhood Development institutions can be effective in ensuring sustainable adoption of OFSP.

Many traditional economic marine fishery resources have been declining in the coastal waters of China.随着我国近海多种传统经济渔业资源的衰退,六丝钝尾虾虎鱼已成为海州湾等海域的优势鱼种之一,并在海洋食物网中发挥着重要作用。本研究根据2011年和2013—2016年春季和秋季在海州湾及其邻近海域进行的渔业资源底拖网调查,基于线性混合模型研究了海州湾六丝钝尾虾虎鱼的摄食习性以及影响其摄食的主要因素,并对其摄食策略进行分析。结果表明: 海州湾六丝钝尾虾虎鱼以虾类、双壳类、端足类等14个饵料生物类群为食,其中端足类、虾类、双壳类、蛇尾类是其主要的饵料类群。从饵料生物种类来看,六丝钝尾虾虎鱼摄食的饵料种类有37种,优势饵料生物有钩虾、细螯虾、独眼钩虾、彩虹明樱蛤和鲜明鼓虾等。线性混合模型分析表明,海州湾六丝钝尾虾虎鱼的摄食强度受体长、水深、季节、底层盐度的显著影响,其中,摄食强度与水深和底层盐度呈显著负相关关系,而与体长呈显著正相关关系,且春季的摄食强度显著高于秋季。聚类分析表明,以体长70 mm为界,可将六丝钝尾虾虎鱼划分为食性差异较大的两个体长组,其摄食随体长的变化主要与自身摄食能力与饵料生物丰度的变化有关。摄食策略分析表明,六丝钝尾虾虎鱼的营养生态位具有较高的表型间成分,对食物的种内竞争较低。本研究将有助于揭示六丝钝尾虾虎鱼的生活史特征,并为其资源的可持续利用和科学管理提供参考依据。.

Although organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in aquatic environments have received increasing concern, little information is available on their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in marine food webs. Consequently, the risks of OPFRs to marine ecosystems are unknown. In this study, seven OPFR compounds in marine biological samples collected from Liaodong Bay, Bohai Sea, were analyzed to evaluate their level and biological amplification effect in the marine food web. The total OPFRs of marine organisms in Liaodong Bay ranged from 2.60 to 776 ng/g ww, and lipids were critical factors affecting the concentration of OPFRs in marine species. Tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were the OPFRs most frequently detected in marine species. Still, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) was dominant in most marine species (16/24), and the content of chlorinated OPFRs was highest. At the same time, alkyl OPFRs and aryl OPFRs accounted for the same proportion. No correlation between OPFR concentration and the trophic level was observed in marine organisms from Liaodong Bay. It was shown in the results of the species sensitivity distribution that TCIPP in Chinese seawater does not pose a potential ecological risk to marine species. However, much work remains to be done on accumulating information and the ecological risks of OPFRs in different marine food webs.

In the last century, many Mediterranean coastal areas have been subjected to anthropogenic disturbances from industrial activities, uncontrolled landfills, shipyards, and high maritime traffic. The Augusta Bay (eastern Sicily, Italy) represents an example of a strongly impacted coastal environment with an elevated level of sediments contamination due to the presence of one of the largest European petrochemical plants, combined with an extensive commercial and military harbor. The most significant contaminants were represented by mercury (Hg) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), derived from a former chlor-alkali plant, and other organic compounds like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs). Since the 1970s, Augusta Bay has become internationally recognized as a contaminated marine environment, although very little information is available regarding the temporal trend of contaminants bioavailability and biological impacts on aquatic organisms. In this study, the Hg and HCB concentrations were investigated over 10 years (from 2003 to 2013) in sediments and invertebrate and vertebrate organisms; these two contaminants' ecotoxicity was further evaluated at a biochemical and cellular level by analyzing the induction of organic biotransformation processes and DNA damages. The results showed high concentrations of Hg and HCB in sediments and their strong bioaccumulation in different species with significantly higher values than those measured in reference sites. This trend was paralleled by increased micronuclei frequency (DNA damage biomarker) and activity of the biotransformation system. While levels of chemicals in sediments remained elevated during the time course, their bioavailability and biological effects showed a gradual decrease after 2003, when the chlor-alkali plant was closed. Environmental persistence of Hg and HCB availability facilitates their bioaccumulation and affects the health status of marine organisms, with possible implications for environmental risk, pollutants transfer, and human health.

The ghost shrimp genus Callianassa Leach, 1814 is currently represented by six taxa, of which five are known from the eastern Atlantic and only C. persica Sakai, 2005 from the Persian Gulf. In this study, a new species of Callianassa is described and illustrated on the basis of material from the subtidal soft sediments (at 26–28 m depth) in Wakasa Bay, western Japanese coast of the Sea of Japan. Callianassa ogurai n. sp. is the first species of the genus from the Pacific region. This study discusses characters differentiating the new species and other five congeneric species. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene supports the close relationship between the new species and C. subterranea (Montagu, 1808), warranting the generic assignment of the new species to Callianassa sensu stricto. We also explore the contentious taxonomic status of C. timiris (Sakai, Türkay, Beck & Freiwald, 2015).

Anoxygenic photoautotrophic metabolism of green sulfur bacteria of the family Chlorobiaceae played a significant role in establishing the Earth's biosphere. Two known major ecological forms of these phototrophs differ in their pigment composition and, therefore, in color: the green and brown forms. The latter form often occurs in low-light environments and is specialized to harvest blue light, which can penetrate to the greatest depth in the water column. In the present work, metagenomic sequencing was used to investigate the natural population of brown Chl. phaeovibrioides ZM in a marine stratified Zeleny Mys lagoon in the Kandalaksha Bay (the White Sea) to supplement the previously obtained genomes of brown Chlorobiaceae. The genomes of brown and green Chlorobiaceae were investigated using comparative genome analysis and phylogenetic and reconciliation analysis to reconstruct the evolution of these ecological forms. Our results support the suggestion that the last common ancestor of Chlorobiaceae belonged to the brown form, i.e. it was adapted to the conditions of low illumination. However, despite the vertical inheritance of these characteristics, among modern Chlorobiaceae populations, the genes responsible for synthesizing the pigments of the brown form are subject to active horizontal transfer.

It remains unclear how the suspended non-fed bivalve mariculture will alter the coastal transfer and cleaning process of trace elements, the non-degradable contaminants, which have been reported to accumulate in sediment from bivalve mariculture areas. Herein, we set up a field in situ comparative test in the suspended oyster (Crassostrea plicatula) farming area (OF) and reference area (RA) of Xiangshan Bay to verify our hypothesis that the biodepositon of suspended oysters would consolidate trace elements from the water column and transport them to the sediment. Distribution of trace elements in multiple media of biodeposits (BDs), settling particles (SPs), sediments (SEs), and seawater demonstrate that the accelerated deposition of BDs which enriched trace elements from the water column by oysters filtering suspended particles led to trace elements accumulation in SEs from OF. Additionally, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn were strongly regulated by this process with significant (p 0.05) higher concentrations in SEs from OF (10.96, 0.20, 13.98, 82.40, 38.47, 38.22, 108.57, and 111.20 μg/g, repectively) than those from RA (9.43, 0.13, 11.76, 63.30, 30.34, 29.55, 86.59, and 100.24 μg/g, repectively), but the extent was different for Mn, Mo, Pb, and W with concentrations in SEs from OF (737.37, 0.81, 30.98, and 3.96 μg/g, repectively) and RA (765.25, 0.69, 31.27, and 3.34 μg/g, repectively), especially for Rb and Sr with concentrations in SEs from OF (131.13 and 96.24 μg/g, repectively) and RA (142.21 and 161.10 μg/g, repectively), due to their geochemical and geophysical properties. Moreover, the harvest of hyper-accumulated oysters as a sink for removing trace elements from water column cannot hide the impact of this process.
