Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide in women. Many anticancer drugs are currently used clinically have been isolated from plant species or are based on such substances. Thymol (5-methyl-2-isopropylphenol) and carvacrol are oxygenated aromatic compounds from the monoterpene group. They are the main constituents of thyme essential oil and show antiproliferative, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties. the aim of this study is to compare the antiproliferative and apoptotic effects of thymol and carvacrol on SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cell line. the cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of thymol and carvacrol (100, 200, 400, 600 mu M) at 24 h and 48 h durations. the cell viability was investigated by MTT assay and analysis of apoptosis with annexin V assay was determined. the study show that thymol and carvacrol significantly induced apoptosis in all groups as dose and time-dependent (p < .05). the data in the present study demonstrated that thymol and carvacrol have apoptotic and antiproliferative properties in a concentration-dependent manner toward ovarian cancer cells. SKOV-3 cancer cell line was much more sensitive to the toxic effect of thymol than carvacrol., Mugla Sitki Kocman University Research Projects Coordination OfficeMugla Sitki Kocman University [17/062], This study has been granted by the Mugla Sitki Kocman University Research Projects Coordination Office through Project Grant Number: (17/062). the funders had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript

Microstructural and elemental characterization of the synthesized and commercial chitosan powders were performed using fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Thermal analysis were done using thermogravimetric analysis. Antioxidant and antimicrobial analysis were done using by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay and agar well diffusion assay, respectively. The yield of the synthesized chitosan was calculated as 7.47% with moisture and ash contents of 0.151 +/- 0.0025% and 0.19 +/- 0.01%, respectively. Synthesized chitosan demonstrated the values of degree of deacetylation (71%), water (620.029 +/- 52.59%) and fat (437.93 +/- 15.92%) binding capacities, solubility (94.15 +/- 2.84%), viscosity (463.25 +/- 13.10 cPs) and whiteness (90.23 +/- 0.27%). Antioxidant activity of synthesized chitosan was found to be moderate (55.30 +/- 5.05%) when compared to ascorbic acid standard (87.61 +/- 1.34). Chitosan obtained from blue crab shell also showed moderate antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The findings of the study indicated that blue crab shell waste might be a potentially effective biopolymer source for commercial applications especially in food industry.

Background/aim: Bacterial adherence to a suture material is one of the main causes of surgical site infections. An antibacterial suture material with enhanced wound healing function may protect the surgical site from infections. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect of propolis and biogenic metallic nanoparticles when combined with silk sutures for biomedical use.Materials and methods: Silver nanoparticle AgNP synthesis was carried out via a microbial-mediated biological route and impregnated on propolis-loaded silk sutures using an in situ process. Silk sutures fabricated with propolis and biosynthesized AgNPs bioAgNP-propolis-coated sutures were intensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy SEM , energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy EDS , thermogravimetric analysis TGA , and differential scanning calorimetry DSC . The antibacterial characteristics of the bioAgNP-propolis-coated sutures were evaluated using the agar plate method. The biocompatibility of the bioAgNP-propolis-coated sutures was evaluated using 3T3 fibroblast cells, and their wound-healing potential was also investigated. Results: BioAgNP-propolis-coated sutures displayed potent antibacterial activity against pathogenic gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. BioAgNP-propolis-coated silk sutures were found to be biocompatible with 3T3 fibroblast cell culture. In vitro wound healing scratch assay also demonstrated that the extract of bioAgNP-propolis-coated sutures stimulated the 3T3 fibroblasts' cell proliferation. Conclusion: Coating the silk sutures with propolis and biogenic AgNPs gave an effective antibacterial capacity to surgical sutures besides providing biocompatibility and wound healing activity.

The effects of gelatin films enriched with laurel leaf essential oil on the quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during refrigerated storage at (4±1) °C were examined over a period of 26 days. Fish fillets were wrapped with 8 % gelatin films containing 0, 0.1 and 1 % (by volume per mass) of laurel essential oil and vacuum packaged. Sensory (raw and cooked fish), microbiological (total viable counts, psychrotrophic bacteria counts, Enterobacteriaceae and lactic acid bacteria) and chemical (proximate composition, pH, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), free fatty acid (FFA) and peroxide value (PV)) analysis, and colour measurement were carried out during the storage period and shelf-life was determined periodically. The obtained results showed that the gelatin film enriched with laurel essential oil was suitable for the preservation of rainbow trout fillet and the ability of laurel essential oil to preserve the film depended on its ratio. Combined effects of gelatin film and laurel essential oil (1 % by volume per mass) was efficient in maintaining the quality characteristics at an acceptable level up to 22 days of storage, while the control and gelatin film without the essential oil reached an unacceptable level at 15 and 20 days, respectively.
