We describe the case of Jessica Barnett, an adolescent girl whose repeated episodes of syncope and near-syncope were ascribed to a seizure or anxiety disorder. The correct diagnoses (congenital long QT syndrome; arrythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy) were established by autopsy and genetic studies only after her death at age 17. The perspective of the family is presented, along with an analysis of what went right and what went wrong in Jessica’s diagnostic journey. Key lessons in this case include the value of family as engaged members of the diagnostic team, that a ‘hyperventilation test’ should not be used to exclude cardiac origins of syncope or pre-syncope, and the inherent challenges in the diagnosis of the long QT syndrome.

This paper sets out to de-mystify the effects of the Barnett Formula – the mechanism which has delivered the bulk of the funding for Scottish domestic services over the past forty years. There has always been considerable ambiguity about the effects of the formula: with some holding that it is a mechanism which would eventually deliver converging levels of per capita spending in the different countries of the UK: while others held that it protected expenditure differentials. The paper explains why, partly because of the effects of relative population change, both views were correct at different times in the period up to 2015. In particular, at times of austerity, the formula operated to protect relative per capita spending levels in Scotland. Largely by accident, the Barnett Formula delivered some of the features expected in a properly functioning monetary union. After 2015, however, with the introduction of the post referendum fiscal settlement, the position is quite different. While Barnett still plays a part, the overall effect of the new funding system is to place Scotland in a vulnerable position, where it is at much greater risk of falling into a cycle of economic decline relative to the rest of the UK.

Propagation of production- and injection-induced stresses from reservoir layers to basement faults is not well understood, especially in reservoirs with hydraulically segregated production and injection units situated across low-permeability structural or stratigraphic boundaries. This is one of the challenges in understanding the 2013–2014 Azle-Reno earthquake sequence (maximum magnitude M w 3.8) in the Fort Worth Basin of Texas, which occurred after several billion cubic meters of gas and several million cubic meters of brine were produced from the Barnett Shale and several million cubic meters of water was injected into the Ellenburger Formation below the Barnett. The effect of Barnett production on induced stress and reactivation of the synthetic-antithetic fault pair hosting the seismicity is not well understood from prior studies. The interaction among production-induced contraction, injection-induced expansion, and decrease in fault compression due to fluid diffusing from the injection layer strengthens two-way coupling among fluid flow, deformation, and fault failure processes. Using a high-resolution coupled flow-geomechanics-fault reactivation model of the Azle region and a modified corner point meshing algorithm, we integrate structural, seismic, and well data to model novel mechanisms of stress interaction and propagation. The model indicates how Barnett’s production-induced contraction interacts with Ellenburger’s injection-induced expansion in the footwall block of the antithetic fault to cause updip shear on the fault. In the hanging-wall block of the synthetic fault below Ellenburger, the model finds that the downdip shear from Ellenburger expansion colludes with the decrease in fault’s effective compression due to downdip fluid diffusion. The collusion induces normal faulting in the model. Modeling also reveals that the reorientation of the principal stresses is more severe in the Barnett compared with that in the Ellenburger. The model quantifies the impact of stress reorientation on the magnitude and location of fault reactivation events.

This article assesses the implications of the 2017 Confidence and Supply Agreement between the Conservative Party and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in the context of the Barnett Formula and intergovernmental relations post the devolution settlement and the Good Friday Agreement. In light of the parties’ shared objectives to strengthen and enhance the UK, the Confidence and Supply Agreement, sets out how the DUP would support the minority Conservative government in specific areas, including finance Bills and matters pertaining to the exit from the European Union. This article examines the nature and operation of this Agreement and assesses the extent to which it may be seen to have breached established conventions, rules and principles around devolved funding and the principle of political impartiality enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement. It is argued that the Confidence and Supply Agreement has contributed to the perceived shortcomings of the Barnett Formula as a robust, fair, financial methodology. The distribution of money to the devolved administrations should be modernised and based on need, accountability and transparency. It is also concluded that being locked into a parliamentary deal undermines the UK Government’s ability to be impartial between the competing interests in Northern Ireland.

Rapport is an important component of neuropsychological test administration; however, there is a lack of psychometrically sound measures of rapport in the context of neuropsychological assessment. The purpose of this study was to explore adapting measures of the psychotherapeutic alliance specifically to neuropsychological test administration and investigate their feasibility and construct validity. College students (N = 126) were administered a brief battery of neuropsychological tests in either a high-rapport or low-rapport condition. Participants in the high-rapport condition rated rapport as being higher, suggesting that the items captured the nature of the interpersonal interaction between examiner and examinee. The results suggest the feasibility of adapting items from measures of the psychotherapeutic alliance for measuring rapport in neuropsychological testing. This article introduces the Barnett Rapport Questionnaire, a measure of rapport in the context of neuropsychological assessment.

Rapidly spinning magnetic grains can acquire large magnetic dipole moments due to the Barnett effect. Here we study the new effect of Barnett magnetic dipole-dipole interaction on grain-grain collisions and grain growth, assuming grains spun up by radiative torques. We find that the collision rate between grains having embedded iron inclusions can be significantly enhanced due to Barnett magnetic dipole-dipole interaction when grains rotate suprathermally by radiative torques. We discuss the implications of enhanced collision rate for grain growth and destruction in the circumstellar envelope of evolved stars, photodissociation regions, and protostellar environments. The Barnett effect, discovered more than a century ago, describes how an inertial body with otherwise zero net magnetic moment acquires spontaneous magnetization when mechanically spinning. Breakthrough experiments have recently shown that an ultrashort laser pulse destroys the magnetization of an ordered ferromagnet within hundreds of femtoseconds, with the spins losing angular momentum to circularly-polarized optical phonons as part of the ultrafast Einstein-de Haas effect. However, the prospect of using such high-frequency vibrations of the lattice to reciprocally switch magnetization in a nearby magnetic medium has not yet been experimentally explored. Here we show that the spontaneous magnetization temporarily gained via the ultrafast Barnett effect, through the resonant excitation of circularly-polarized optical phonons in paramagnetic substrates, can be used to permanently reverse the magnetic state of the substrate-mounted heterostructure. With the handedness of the phonons steering the direction of magnetic switching, the ultrafast Barnett effect offers a selective and potentially universal method for exercising ultrafast non-local control over magnetic order., Comment: Total of 31 pages and 17 figures (main text and supplementary information)

Copulas are increasingly widely used probabilistic tools for describing, analyzing, and modeling random variable dependencies. In this article, we offer a new copula which stands out from the others by an original definition based on the simple symmetric two-dimensional function \xyyx" multiplied with an exponential function. It can also be viewed as a special weighted version of the Gumbel-Barnett copula. We investigate its properties and relationships with other well-known copulas. Some graphical and numerical analyses of its characteristics are also provided.

The activation mechanism of Irving-Dallas events is not well understood as it is shrouded in ambiguity due to many earthquakes located relatively far (>15 km) from production and injection wells. This requires a modeling approach that can quantify spatiotemporal propagation of production- and injection-induced stresses from wells to the faults while resolving fault geometry, stratigraphy, and well activity. However, constructing one such detailed model for the entire basin is computationally prohibitive due to the millions of grid cells needed to discretize the basin at that resolution. Based on our analysis of the data on well activity and fault position, we employed a novel two-model approach that exploits the disparity in scales between the basin-scale injection analysis and the well-scale fault reactivation analysis. We construct a coarse-scale model of Ellenburger injection in the Fort Worth basin and a fine-scale flow-geomechanics model of the Dallas-Irving region containing the faults that hosted the seismicity and the production/injection wells in the region. We use the coarse model to provide time-dependent pressure boundary conditions to the fine-scale model. We analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of pressure fields at both basin and reservoir scales. Analysis of the results provides evidence for interaction between Barnett's production and Ellenburger's injection as well as pressure diffusion from Ellenburger into the basement along the through-going faults. It allows us to test the hypothesis of injection-induced reactivation as the causative mechanism for the Irving seismic events. Almost all injection-induced seismicity studies in the literature show how injection near a fault (well-to-fault distance < 10 km) can induce seismicity. We provide evidence of far-field injection-induced seismicity (well-to-fault distance > 80 km) by coupling basin-scale and reservoir-scale models and a multi-physics approach.

We investigate the Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGIs) for a boson system whose observables are given by deforming the Pegg-Barnett phase operators. We consider two observables and show that the quantum Fourier transform is useful in the realization of the required measurements. Deriving explicit forms for the LGIs using the coherent state $|\alpha\rangle$ as the initial state, we explore the regimes where they are violated when the time difference between observations of the phase operators is varied. Combining the technologies of quantum optics and magnonics, we find that the circularly polarized laser can dynamically realize the quasiequilibrium magnon Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). The Zeeman coupling between the laser and spins generates the optical Barnett field, and its direction is controllable by switching the laser chirality. We show that the optical Barnett field develops the total magnetization in insulating ferrimagnets with reversing the local magnetization, which leads to the quasiequilibrium magnon BEC. This laser-induced magnon BEC transition through optical Barnett effect, dubbed the optomagnonic Barnett effect, provides an access to coherent magnons in the high frequency regime of the order of terahertz. We also propose a realistic experimental setup to observe the optomagnonic Barnett effect using current device and measurement technologies as well as the laser chirping. We welcome the comments of van Hinsbergen et al. [2017] on the recent efforts of Barnett-Moore et al. [2016]. Specifically, van Hinsbergen et al. [2017] raise concerns about two of the major conclusions made by Barnett-Moore et al. [2016]. Firstly, Barnett-Moore et al. [2016] choose to negate the Cretaceous Iberian paleomagnetic database as a viable plate kinematic constraint on the plate motions of Mesozoic Iberia. This conclusion, criticized by van Hinsbergen et al. [2017], was based on citing the previous efforts of Neres et al. [2012; 2013], which exposed several shortcomings, elaborated on below, within this dataset. Secondly, van Hinsbergen et al. [2017] criticize Barnett-Moore et al. [2016] for dismissing mantle tomographic interpretations in support of a preserved Cretaceous Pyrenean ‘subducted slab’ beneath northern Africa. Below, we have addressed each of these major criticisms from van Hinsbergen et al. [2017] in a two-section layout, similar to their comment above.

Barnett’s 2017 paper ‘No free lunch’, the answer is ‘yes’: even tiny contributions can make a morally relevant difference. To defend this answer, Barnett raises an objection against the rival view that tiny contributions never make any difference. I argue that we should reject both Barnett’s and the rival view. I propose an alternative account that reflects the vagueness at play in the outcome of tiny contributions and entails that, in a range of cases, it is indeterminate whether these contributions make any difference.

Essential Cases: Tort Law provides a bridge between course textbooks and key case judgments. This case document summarizes the facts and decision in Barnett v Chelsea and Kensington Hospital Management Committee [1969] 1 QB 428. The document also included supporting commentary from author Craig Purshouse.

First, I study the analogy between the magnetization of a material and the spin polarization of particles in a fluid. Using the relativistic version of the Barnett effect, i.e. the magnetization of a material induced by mechanical rotation, the spin polarization induced by thermal vorticity is obtained within a purely classical model, where spin is treated as an intrinsic magnetic moment and rotation is included as a non-inertial effect. I argue that since spin polarization induced by thermal vorticity can be obtained in a classical theory, it can not be dominated by quantum anomalies. Second, the spin polarization induced by magnetic field is obtained for a fluid at local thermal equilibrium using statistical quantum field theory. The obtained formula is valid beyond the weak field approximation and when contributions from the non-homogeneity of the magnetic field are small. The exact form of spin polarization is studied for a free Dirac field at global equilibrium, and, like magnetic susceptibility, it oscillates according to the de Haas - van Alphen effect. The purpose of this paper is to derive the Green's function of an anisotropic elastic medium and validate it with the effective stiffness tensor of Barnett Shale. We have derived the frequency‐dependent Green's function by using the spectral theorem for matrices, thus simplifying the process of computing Green's function and obtaining analytical solutions. Evaluating the inverse of the Green–Christoffel tensor is an essential part of computing the Green's function. Based on the degeneracy of the eigenvalues of the Green–Christoffel tensor, the inverse of the Green–Christoffel tensor is expressed in the form of partial fractions. Consequently, the stiffness tensors from the measurement of core samples of Barnett Shale are used to validate the Green's function. We use the generalized singular approximation method of effective medium theory to model the effective stiffness of the core samples from microstructural properties. The generalized singular approximation method also allows us to compute the theoretical stiffness tensor of the Barnett Shale for porosity variations. The behaviour of the Green's function, which reflects the behaviour of the media, is studied in the static, low‐ and high‐frequency domains and under different physical parameters. It is observed that the variations of crack‐induced porosity produce different trends in Green's function for vertically transverse isotropic and horizontally transverse isotropic media. Thus, the variation of porosity is observed to be influential in differentiating between transverse isotropic media that have inclusions. The Green's function results presented in this paper have direct applications in the construction of synthetic seismograms for unbounded transversely isotropic media.

In May 1949, Herman A. Barnett III, a 23-year-old Black veteran, applied to The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. His application occurred in the wake of Black student protests against the segregationist policies of The University of Texas and of judicial victories by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to eradicate racial inequalities in state-financed graduate and professional education. Barnett’s application prompted the state to fund a medical school at the Texas State University for Negroes, the only time a state ever attempted to thwart desegregation by financing a separate Black medical school. Barnett was clearly qualified for admission to UTMB, and if the school rejected him, he had agreed to be a plaintiff in an NAACP lawsuit. Legal action was not necessary, however. In August 1949 Barnett was accepted into UTMB, thereby becoming the second African American person to desegregate a Southern medical school. Barnett was technically admitted on a contract basis as a student at the Texas State University for Negroes in Houston and was to have transferred there later. The Black medical school was never built and Barnett graduated from UTMB in 1953. This review analyzes the role that Barnett and Black civil rights activists played in the history of medical education in the US and the dismantlement of racially exclusionary policies in medical schools.

Forecasting production from unconventional reservoirs is challenging because of the uncertainty that arises from intricate fracture networks, complex transport mechanisms, and convoluted flow configurations. The accuracy of decline curve analysis for such reservoirs has been questioned due to the limited amount of long-term production data available. That being so, some unconventional reservoirs, such as the Bakken and the Barnett, have produced for 15-20 years, providing an adequate amount of data to validate the accuracy of the hyperbolic decline curve method, shed light on proper parameters – b and Di, and determine the amount of production history necessary to trust regression techniques. To test this, an extensive and versatile regression analysis model was built in Python using least squares optimization to match specific durations of production data – first 6 months, first year, first two years, etc. The model outputs the optimal parameters – b and Di –to match the specific duration. Additionally, fixed b values from 0.5 to 1.5 are tested where only Di is optimized through the model. To understand how accurately the models predict production, they are validated against the most recent 5 years of data, which was not included in the matching period. For a statistically significant sample size, around 700 wells in the Bakken and 1800 wells in the Barnett with start dates between 2005 and 2010 were used. The results show that in order to have confidence in the model's ability to predict production, more than 3 years of production data must be available. If 3 years of data is not available, the hyperbolic exponent, b, should be set close to 1.0 for Bakken wells (and likely other unconventional liquid rich wells) and between 1.0 and 1.2 for Barnett wells (and likely other unconventional gas wells). Additionally, the initial nominal decline rate, Di, should be chosen in accordance with the hyperbolic exponent. Not only do these guidelines result in satisfactory, long-term predictions, but they mitigate any significant error influenced by the underlying relationships between b and Di. These curve-altering relationships induce both positive and negative impacts on the predictions. If b is improperly chosen, overestimation in late-life production profiles may ensue. Alternatively, if Di is improperly chosen, early-life production may be too high. Since production forecasting is a necessity for a company to determine its present value, this paper provides knowledge and guidance regarding forecasting procedures and parameter settings for North American unconventional operators. Using decline curve analysis to accurately predict oil and gas rates is pertinent to the longevity of these unconventional reservoirs.

Management perspectives of the concept of «public dialogue» are revealed in the article on the basis of secondary data of the project of Сupertino (Сalifornia, USA), carried out in the 90s of the twentieth century by a research group led by W.B. Рeirce and V.E. Кronen. The view of the theory of coordinated control of meaning as the conceptual basis of this project allowed the authors to focus on the co-evolution of its methodological foundations and empirical potential, which was expressed in the development of criteria for evaluating any practical theory and improving its conceptual apparatus. The six key principles identified by the authors as SMM Grammar: coordination, forms of communication, event (case), forces of logic, position of the intermediary personality, and contextual reconstruction allow us to take a broader look at the possibilities of the modern field of scientific discourse and the communicative process as a whole. A long-term social dialogue allows us to harmonize the interests of different social groups not by unilateral managerial influence, but by allowing all stakeholders to engage in a constructive dialogue. The main empirical method here is contextual reconstruction of events (focus groups, group discussions, etc.) with the involvement of an рerson-рosition of the facilitator (moderator).

We demonstrate that the angular momentum compensation temperature $T_A$, at which the net angular momentum in the sample disappears, can be controlled in Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ by partially substituting Dy for Ho. The $T_A$ can be detected using the Barnett effect, by which mechanical rotation magnetizes an object due to spin-rotation coupling. We found that $T_A$ increases with the Dy content and clarified that the $T_A$ of Ho$_{1.5}$Dy$_{1.5}$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ coincides with room temperature. We have made the first observation of the nuclear Barnett effect. In the electronic Barnett effect, which was first observed in 1915 by Samuel Barnett, a ferromagnetic rod was spun about its long axis and a magnetization developed in the rod along the axis of rotation. This effect is caused by the coupling between the angular momentum of the electronic spins in the sample and the rotational motion of the rod. In our experiment, we measured the nuclear Barnett effect by rotating a sample of water at rotational speeds up to 13.5 kHz in a weak magnetic field and observed a change in the polarization of the protons in the sample that is proportional to the frequency of rotation. We measured this polarization by observing the change in the size of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal. No NMR frequency shift was observed due to rotation, meaning that this magnetization was not produced by a real magnetic field.

Background: This study explores sociodemographic disparities in residential proximity to unconventional gas development (UGD) among pregnant women. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis using data from a retrospective birth cohort of 164,658 women with a live birth or fetal death from November 2010 to 2012 in the 24-county area comprising the Barnett Shale play, in North Texas. We considered both individual- and census tract-level indicators of sociodemographic status and computed Indexes of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE) to quantify relative neighborhood-level privilege/disadvantage. We used negative binomial regression to investigate the relation between these variables and the count of active UGD wells within 0.8 km of the home during gestation. We calculated count ratios (CR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to describe associations. Results: There were fewer wells located near homes of women of color living in low-income areas compared to non-Hispanic white women living in more privileged neighborhoods (ICE race/ethnicity + income: CR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.48&ndash, 0.55). Conclusions: While these results highlight a potential disparity in residential proximity to UGD in the Barnett Shale, they do not provide evidence of an environmental justice (EJ) issue nor negate findings of environmental injustice in other regions.

Barnett Continent Ileal Reservoir is rarely performed in patients with ulcerative colitis who require colectomy. Prepouch ileitis occasionally occurs in patients with ileal pouches. The role of oral mesalamine in the treatment of prepouch ileitis has not been established. We describe a case in which prepouch ileitis in Barnett Continent Ileal Reservoir was successfully treated with oral mesalamine. This is the first case in the literature showing that mesalamine is safe and effective in the treatment of prepouch ileitis in a patient with a continent ileostomy.
