Abstract

Agri-food waste management represent for several supply-chains a pending issue, since most of the lignocellulosic biomasses produced by the agricultural practices are often intended for energy production, due to their high disposal costs. Nanotechnology could represent a sustainable way to valorise agricultural waste by extracting highly performing nanomaterials and reusing them as nanocarriers or nanopesticides to protect crops. Cellulose and lignin, which are the main component of plant residues display antimicrobial properties when reduced to their nanosized forms, being able to act as innovative tools to counteract plant pathogens, both bacterial and fungal ones. In particularly cellulose can be extracted from different matrices to obtain cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), while lignin is often reduced in nanoparticles (LNP). In this mini review the current and most recent results in terms of antimicrobial activities against plant pathogens by waste-based lignocellulosic nanomaterial are showed.

Abstract

Purpose: to assess the use of telemedicine with phone-call visits as practical tool to follow-up with patients affected by urological benign diseases, whose clinic visits had been cancelled during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: patients were contacted via phone-call and a specific questionnaire was administered to evaluate the health status of these patients, and to identify those who needed an “in-person” ambulatory visit due to the worsening of their condition. Secondarily, the patients’ perception of a potential shift towards a "telehealth" approach to the management of their condition and to indirectly evaluate their desire to return to “in-person” clinic visits. Results: 607 were contacted by phone-call. 87.5% (531/607) of the cases showed stability of the symptoms so no clinic in-person or emergency visits were needed. 81.5% (495/607) of patients were more concerned about the risk of contagion than their urological condition. The median score for phone visit comprehensibility and ease of communication of exams was 5/5; whilst patients’ perception of phone visits’ usefulness was scored 4/5. 53% (322/607) of the interviewees didn’t own the basic supports required to be able to perform a real telemedicine consult according to the required standards. Conclusion: Telemedicine approach limits the number of unnecessary accesses to medical facilities and represent an important tool for the limitation of the risk of transmission of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. However, infrastructures, health workers and patients should reach out to a computerization process in order to allow a wider diffusion of more advanced forms of telemedicine, such as televisit.

Abstract

From January 28th to February 10th, 2008 the Italian Society of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention (GICR) conducted a national web-based survey aimed to provide specific and updated information on organization and core components of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in Italy, and to describe, both in residential and out-patient settings, indications for CR, clinical characteristics of referred patients, risk profile, performed diagnostic procedures, exercise and educational programme, treatments and arrangements for the follow-up [1, 2]. The ISYDE-2008 is a multicenter, longitudinal, prospective observation study whose design was previously described [1, 2].

Abstract

Background Secondary prevention is not adequately implemented after myocardial infarction (MI). We assessed the effect on quality of care and prognosis of a long-term, relatively intensive rehabilitation strategy after MI. Methods We conducted a multicenter, randomized controlled trial in patients following standard post-MI cardiac rehabilitation, comparing a long-term, reinforced, multifactorial educational and behavioral intervention with usual care. A total of 3241 patients with recent MI were randomized to a 3-year multifactorial continued educational and behavioral program (intervention group; n = 1620) or usual care (control group; n = 1621). The combination of cardiovascular (CV) mortality, nonfatal MI, nonfatal stroke, and hospitalization for angina pectoris, heart failure, or urgent revascularization procedure was the primary end point. Other end points were major CV events, major cardiac and cerebrovascular events, lifestyle habits, and drug prescriptions. Results End point events occurred in 556 patients (17.2%). Compared with usual care, the intensive intervention did not decrease the primary end point significantly (16.1% vs 18.2%; hazard ratio [HR], 0.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.74-1.04). However, the intensive intervention decreased several secondary end points: CV mortality plus nonfatal MI and stroke (3.2% vs 4.8%; HR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.47-0.95), cardiac death plus nonfatal myocardial infarction (2.5% vs 4.0%; HR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.43-0.94), and nonfatal MI (1.4% vs 2.7%; HR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.31-0.86). A marked improvement in lifestyle habits (ie, exercise, diet, psychosocial stress, less deterioration of body weight control) and in prescription of drugs for secondary prevention was seen in the intervention group. Conclusion The GOSPEL Study is the first trial to our knowledge to demonstrate that a multifactorial, continued reinforced intervention up to 3 years after rehabilitation following MI is effective in decreasing the risk of several important CV outcomes, particularly nonfatal MI, although the overall effect is small. Abstract

In Portugal, in 2010, after the first recorded occurrence of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) in a few kiwifruit orchards, and following subsequent records of suspected symptoms at the beginning of 2011, an extensive survey concerning Psa was carried out. One hundred and sixty-two samples (trunks, twigs, leaves, flowers, buds) presenting symptoms were collected from the main Portuguese kiwifruit areas and submitted to phyto-bacteriological analyses to verify possible relationships between the symptoms/damage observed and the presence of Psa in kiwifruit orchards. The results confirmed the widespread presence of the pathogen in the main production areas of Portugal, where different Actinidia spp. cultivars are grown. Genetic investigations revealed that all the Psa strains detected belong to the European genotype. Preliminary considerations concerning pathogen dissemination are made.

Abstract

In this communication, we present a method for detecting nonstationarities of random time series with an approximately Gaussian distribution of amplitudes. This method is suitable for real time implementation. Here we report some results obtained by applying them to a time series of spectral parameters of surface myoelectric signals, collected during voluntary isometric contractions of human muscles. Moreover, we describe the computerized system that we used to implement our detector of nonstationarity. This system is based on the TMS 320C25 DSP chip and realizes on-line estimation and display of spectral parameters, as well as detection of their nonstationarities, featuring a sampling frequency up to 20 k samples/s. A friendly user interface, fully menu driven, allows the user to select different options during the system's operation by means of hot keys. The accuracy of the system was tested by comparing its estimates with those of an off-line system, previously characterized, which we took as a reference. The estimates of spectral parameters obtained by means of the two systems were always consistent. The on-line stationarity detector was able to recognize rates of variation of the spectral parameters as small as 1%/s during contractions lasting 10-15 s. This sensitivity makes it suitable for clinical application. The set of results herein presented has been selected to highlight the main characteristics of the system.

Abstract

The occurrence of legionnaires' disease has been described previously in passengers of cruise ships, but determination of the source has been rare. A 67-year-old, male cigarette smoker with heart disease contracted legionnaires' disease during a cruise in September 1995 and died 9 days after disembarking. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 was isolated from the patient's sputum and the ship's water supply. Samples from the air-conditioning system were negative. L. pneumophila serogroup 1 isolates from the water supply matched the patient's isolate, by both monoclonal antibody subtyping and genomic fingerprinting. None of 116 crew members had significant antibody titers to L. pneumophila serogroup 1. One clinically suspected case of legionnaires' disease and one confirmed case were subsequently diagnosed among passengers cruising on the same ship in November 1995 and October 1996, respectively. This is the first documented evidence of the involvement of a water supply system in the transmission of legionella infection on ships. These cases were identified because of the presence of a unique international system of surveillance and collaboration between public health authorities.
