PHA is one of the most promising candidates in bio-polymer family which is biodegradable and environment-friendly in nature. In recent years, it has been applied as a biodegradable alternative for petroleum-based plastic across different domains. In literature, several research groups have scrutinised the biocompatibility and biodegradability of PHA in both in vivo settings as well as in in vitro conditions. Microbial yield polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are promoted at present as biodegradable plastics. On the other hand, only a limited number of products is being commercially manufactured out of PHAs (e.g., bottles). A succession of microbes (prokaryotes in addition to eukaryotes) has been identified as potential candidates that can disintegrate PHAs. These materials have been successfully employed in packaging industry, medical devices and implants, moulded goods, paper coatings, adhesives, performance additives, mulch films, non-woven fabrics, etc. The present paper reviews and focuses on the potential applications of PHA and its derivatives in different industries.

There is mounting evidence that plastic and microplastic contamination of soils can affect physico-chemical processes and soil fauna, as has been excellently summarised in many recently published meta-analyses and systematic reviews elsewhere. It has become clear that impacts are highly context dependent on, e.g. polymer type, shape, dose and the soil itself. Most published studies are based on experimental approaches using (semi-)controlled laboratory conditions. They typically focus on one or several representative animal species and their behaviour and/or physiological response — for example, earthworms, but rarely on whole communities of animals. Nevertheless, soil animals are rarely found in isolation and form part of intricate foodwebs. Soil faunal biodiversity is complex, and species diversity and interactions within the soil are very challenging to unravel, which may explain why there is still a dearth of information on this. Research needs to focus on soil animals from a holistic viewpoint, moving away from studies on animals in isolation and consider different trophic levels including their interactions. Furthermore, as evidence obtained from laboratory studies is complemented by relatively few studies done in field conditions, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms by which plastic pollution affects soil animals under realistic field conditions. However, field-based studies are typically more challenging logistically, requiring relatively large research teams, ideally of an interdisciplinary nature to maintain long-term field experiments. Lastly, with more alternative, (bio)degradable and/or compostable plastics being developed and used, their effects on soil animals will need to be further researched.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most commonly used biodegradable plastic with rapid growth in recent years. This leads to predictable increased pollution of PLA microplastics (MPs) in the environment. However, quantification methods for the PLA MPs are still lacking. In this study, a method based on alkali-assisted thermal depolymerization and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis was developed to quantify PLA MPs. After the background monomer compound was removed, PLA MPs were efficiently depolymerized to lactic acid and detected by LC-MS/MS with a limit of quantification of 18.7 ng/g. The ideal recovery of spiked PLA MPs of 93% was obtained, and the PLA MPs did not need to be separated or extracted in advance from the environmental samples. Using this method, PLA MPs were detected in all the sediment samples of a reservoir at a range of 53.5-491 ng/g dw, and the concentrations decreased with the sediment depth. In addition, after soaking in water at 95 °C for 30 min, approximately 12 μg of PLA MPs was released from a single teabag.

The motivation for the STS research came from reviewing COVID-19 data and reading the news to learn how minority communities were disproportionately affected by this pandemic. Although the pandemic struggle was mutually shared amongst the nation, some groups had access to services such as hospitals, local clinics, and pharmacies to get tested, vaccinated, and learn about the current state of the pandemic while others did not. The development of the vaccine stood as a glimpse of hope for the nation; however, only some could share this sentiment. The bias linked with the healthcare system along with structural barriers such as redlining, internet access, and residential segregation, influences factors such as healthcare and vaccine access, vaccine literacy, and even insurance affordability. This makes it more difficult for some racial and ethnic groups to interact with these services than others, namely the Black population. For the capstone project, the unsustainable nature of plastics has motivated investment in alternatives to conventional plastics produced from petrochemicals. In the face of massive amounts of plastic pollution in today's world, we sought to design a plant to repurpose a waste stream from the biodiesel industry to produce a biodegradable plastic. Essentially, we will be using crude glycerol to produce Poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) to contribute to a circular and more sustainable economy. There are two parts to the capstone design: the upstream process, where PHB is produced within C. necator cells using glycerol as a substrate, and the downstream process where PHB is isolated from C. necator and purified. The goal of the upstream process is to provide optimal conditions to grow the maximum amount of PHB. The fermentation substrate is crude glycerol (80 wt%), a byproduct of biodiesel production. First, C. necator will be grown in a seed train to provide high cell density inoculum to the large fed batch bioreactors. Then, the inoculate will be transferred to large fed-batch reactors where C. necator will be further grown to accumulate PHB. Over the growth phase, C. necator grows in the glycerol media and PHB slowly accumulates with the supply of nitrogen in the form of ammonium hydroxide. Around two-thirds of the way through the fermentation process, the nitrogen source to the reactor is replaced with potassium hydroxide (KOH), which causes the microbes to store mass amounts of substrate. Then, the microbes produce mass amounts of PHB in the nitrogen depletion phase. Once the maximum concentration of PHB is achieved at 33.5 hours, the contents of the reactor are sent downstream to separate, purify, and package the PHB to be sold to plastic manufacturers. First, the fermenter effluent is sent through two homogenizers to perform cell lysis. Then the disrupted cells are sent through a series of two disc-stack centrifuges to isolate the PHB. Then, the PHB and water mixture is sent through a spray dryer and the 99.9% pure PHB is then sent through a plastic extrusion process to produce 25 kg bags of 3 millimeter (mm) plastic pellets. The STS research explores the political ramifications of the vaccine system, a large sector of the overarching healthcare system, on the Black community. The dynamic between the vaccine system and the Black community has posed disproportionate effects on this community compared to the White majority. These health disparities were particularly exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, so it was important to explore how the vaccine system played a role in this. The premise of this paper focuses on how during COVID-19, inequality amongst the Black community rose through multiple venues surrounding the vaccine system, notably vaccine hesitancy, literacy, and rollout/access practices. As found through the analysis, there is low vaccine/health literacy, high vaccine hesitancy, and limited vaccine rollout/access amongst the Black community, which contribute to low observed vaccination rates, producing high susceptibility to COVID-19 effects and a peak in COVID-19 disparities. Working on the STS research while also completing the capstone project was rewarding and informative, even though the projects were not explicitly linked. The STS research focused on how the vaccine system aided the development COVID-19 disparities due to the precedence of structural barriers and racism. Exploring factors such as vaccine hesitancy, literacy, access/rollout practices helped me understand the depth of discrimination that has permeated the walls of the overarching healthcare industry. Furthermore, while the vaccine and healthcare system stand as a service to the community, it is important to consider the politics of the system’s function and design. Essentially, I learned to consider inclusivity in design for the capstone project in regards to safety and product pricing. With social and political implications in mind, we designed the project to address the larger issue of global warming and climate change in our nation. We followed inherently safer design by producing this sustainable material and relying on mechanical separation instead of chemical extraction methods.

Plastic is exceedingly abundant in soils, but little is known about its ecological consequences for soil microbiome functioning. Here we report the impacts of polyethylene and biodegradable Ecovio and BI-OPL plastic films buried in alpine soils for 5 months on the genetic potential of the soil microbiome using shotgun metagenomics. The microbiome was more affected by Ecovio and BI-OPL than by polyethylene. Fungi, α- and β-Proteobacteria dominated on the biodegradable films. Ecovio and BI-OPL showed signs of degradation after the incubation, whereas polyethylene did not. Genes involved in cellular processes and signaling (intracellular trafficking, secretion, vesicular transport), as well as metabolism (carbohydrate, lipid and secondary metabolism), were enriched in the plastisphere. Several α/β-hydrolase gene families (cutinase_like, polyesterase-lipase-cutinase, carboxylesterase), which encode enzymes essential to plastic degradation, and carbohydrate-active genes involved in lignin and murein degradation increased on Ecovio and BI-OPL films. Enriched nitrogen fixation and organic N degradation and synthesis genes and decreased nitrification genes on Ecovio altered the biogeochemical cycling, leading to higher ammonium concentrations and depletion of nitrite and nitrate in the soil. Chitin-based nanoparticles are polysaccharide materials that can be produced from a waste stream of the seafood industry: crustacean shells. These nanoparticles have received exponentially growing attention, especially in the field of medicine and agriculture owing to their renewable origin, biodegradability, facile modification, and functionality adjustment. Due to their exceptional mechanical strength and high surface area, chitin-based nanoparticles are ideal candidates for reinforcing biodegradable plastics to ultimately replace traditional plastics. This review discusses the preparation methods for chitin-based nanoparticles and their applications. Special focus is on biodegradable plastics for food packaging making use of the features that can be created by the chitin-based nanoparticles.

Due to several important limitations for packaging applications of starch film such as strength and hydrophilicity, rice starch (Oryza sativa) film was crosslinked with citric acid and modified by different contents of calcium oxide. FTIR spectra showed the evidence of crosslinking by citric acid and the presence of calcium oxide in the modified rice starch films. After the crosslinking, the decrease of degree of crystallinity and swelling including the increase of film smoothness and strain at maximum load were observed. The application of both citric acid and calcium oxide caused greater decrease of swelling, moisture uptake as well as higher stiffness and antibacterial activity than those of the use of only the citric acid. The highest stiffness and antibacterial activity were found for the crosslinked film added by 5 wt% calcium oxide. Moreover, the effect of calcium oxide contents on morphological, thermal and biodegradable properties of the crosslinked films was also investigated.

With the increasingly serious plastic pollution, people's demand for the multi-functional biodegradable plastics is becoming more and more urgent. Inspired by the crosslinked shape memory polymers, the crosslinked starch films were synthesized by inducing the decomposition of benzophenone into free radical and depriving hydrogen on starch macromolecules under UV irradiation, in order to gain a high shape memory performance. The results showed that a three-dimensional crosslinking network between starch macromolecule chains was formed. Compared with the uncrosslinked starch films, the photo-crosslinked films not only had higher mechanical property (tensile strength increased by 154%), but also had better water resistance (water contact angle from 60° to 87°) due to the reduction of free hydroxyl groups. In addition, the stable covalent bonds serving as netpoints endow photo-crosslinked films with great improvement in shape memory property, with nearly 180° bending recovery. More importantly, the maximum shape memory fixity ratio (Rf) and shape memory recovery ratio (Rr) under stretch deformation were 96.5% and 99.8%, respectively. And the Rf and Rr could reach 94.6% and 79.8% even at higher strain. In all, the excellent shape memory performance and good degradability crosslinked starch films, which have great potential application in disposable heat-shrinkable packaging materials.

Biodegradable plastics are contributing to a circular economy as enabler for organic waste recycling to close the nutrient loop. A polymer is designated as biodegradable if microbial oxidation and hydrolysis processes result in the complete transformation of polymer carbon into biomass and CO2. Still, there are concerns that the loss of structural integrity during biodegradation might produce persistent microplastic fragments. Biodegradable plastics are often blends whose components could show different abilities to degrade, e.g. due to inhomogeneity in the chemical structure, crystallinity and the microbial colonization. Specifically, the blend of polylactide (PLA, susceptible to hydrolysis) with aliphatic-aromatic ester copolymers (e.g. PBAT, suceptible to enzymatic cleavage) is relevant for food packaging, which can be collected and composted. The various product shapes can also lead to a change in fragmentation and degradation behaviour. To gain a mechanistic understanding of copolymer blend biodegradation we studied an aromatic-aliphatic copolymer blend in different shapes (cryomilled particles, films and polymer-coated paper cups) under industrial composting conditions, and compared them against the non-blended polymer matrix. During biodegradation (ISO 14855), CO2 evolution was monitored. Using a non-destructive and efficient extraction protocol, the particle number and size distribution, and the state of copolymer degradation were assessed via fluorescence microscopy and chemically selective Raman microscopy. Staining selectivity was additionally cross-checked by an independent incubation of pre-labeled films and fragments. Biodegradation of the polymer blend led first to fragmentation, but the previously formed fragments further degraded to complete biomineralization. The interim number of fragments per composted polymer ranked highest for film shape, lower for fragment shape, and two orders of magnitude lower for film-coated paper cups. Intermittently, up to 0.0012% of the mass of polymer was in fragments below 25 µm, but less than 10⁽-10) at 90% CO2. Fragment counts dissipated with 2.5 days halftime for the realistic film shape. A high-performance biodegradable plastic was made from a chitin KOH/urea solution. The solution was transferred into a hydrogel by cross-linking using epichlorohydrin and ethanol immersion, and a chitin bioplastic was finally prepared by drying in a mold at 40 °C. The solution concentration positively impacts viscosity, crystallinity, and smoothness. A 4% chitin bioplastic exhibits high barrier properties, flame retardancy, high-temperature resistance, mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 107.1 MPa), and soil degradation properties. The chitin bioplastic can be completely degraded by microorganisms in 7 weeks. In addition, biosafety tests suggest that chitin is safe for cells and crops (wheat and mung beans). The chitin bioplastic was further applied to containers, straws, cups, and photoprotection, and it was found that the water resistance and transparency were comparable to those of commercial polypropylene plastics. Due to the excellent performance, safety, and sustainability of the chitin bioplastic, it is expected to become a good substitute for conventional fossil fuel-based plastics.

Finding alternatives to diminish plastic pollution has become one of the main challenges of modern life. A few alternatives have gained potential for a shift toward a more circular and sustainable relationship with plastics. Biodegradable polymers derived from bio- and fossil-based sources have emerged as one feasible alternative to overcome inconveniences associated with the use and disposal of non-biodegradable polymers. The biodegradation process depends on the environment’s factors, microorganisms and associated enzymes, and the polymer properties, resulting in a plethora of parameters that create a complex process whereby biodegradation times and rates can vary immensely. This review aims to provide a background and a comprehensive, systematic, and critical overview of this complex process with a special focus on the mesophilic range. Activity toward depolymerization by extracellular enzymes, biofilm effect on the dynamic of the degradation process, CO2 evolution evaluating the extent of biodegradation, and metabolic pathways are discussed. Remarks and perspectives for potential future research are provided with a focus on the current knowledge gaps if the goal is to minimize the persistence of plastics across environments. Innovative approaches such as the addition of specific compounds to trigger depolymerization under particular conditions, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and the addition of natural and/or modified enzymes are state-of-the-art methods that need faster development. Furthermore, methods must be connected to standards and techniques that fully track the biodegradation process. More transdisciplinary research within areas of polymer chemistry/processing and microbiology/biochemistry is needed.

Future food packaging trends are shifting to natural and eco-friendly materials developed from biopolymers such as starch and other hydrocolloids, to reduce pollution from synthetic polymers. Arrowroot starch (AS) (3.5, 3, 2.5, and 2%) and iota-carrageenan (IC) (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2%) were blended to develop biodegradable edible films (AS/IC-BEF), which were compared against AS-BEF (4%, control). All films were characterized based on their physico-mechanical and barrier properties, functional group properties, crystallinity properties, thermal properties, and soil and seawater biodegradation. AS-BEF exhibited smooth surface, high transparency, and completed composting soil biodegradation in 7 days whereas AS/IC-BEF samples exhibited higher tensile strength, water solubility, swelling properties, and barrier properties, but completed biodegradation after 30 days. XRD analysis indicated IC fractions contributed to increase in degree of crystallinity (28.35°) and FTIR signaled strong hydrogen bond interactions between polymers. AS/IC-BEF samples demonstrated melting temperatures between 158 and 190 °C while glass transition temperatures ranged from 153 to 176 °C, which resulted in maximum weight loss around 50–55% at melting temperatures. Finally, AS/IC-BEF samples successfully inhibited weight loss of cherry tomatoes at room temperature and extended their shelf life to 10 days, which indicated that the AS/IC composite material produced a BEF with potential food and industrial applications.

In this study, the optimisation of a process for producing medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (mcl-PHA) by Pseudomonas putida KT2440 when fed with a polyethene (PE)-derived fatty acid mixture was investigated. The PE was pyrolysed to produce a hydrocarbon wax that was subsequently oxidised to produce a mixture of fatty acids, purified, and used as a PHA substrate for the growth and selection of microorganisms. Based on the shaken flask screening, a production strain, i.e., Pseudomonas putida KT2440, was selected for conducting bioreactor studies. Feeding PE-derived fatty acids in a 20-L setup resulted in high mcl-PHA yields (83.0 g L−1 CDW with 65% PHA in 25 h). Furthermore, life-cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to determine the environmental advantages of the proposed process and its impacts compared to those of other technologies for treating PE-derived waste streams. We conclude that processing waste PE into PHA, rather than incineration, produces biodegradable material while also reducing the additional emissions that arise from traditional PE waste treatment processes, such as incineration to gain energy.

In line with the recent economic growth, especially in developing countries, human concern for the environment has increased over time. This paradigm shift has influenced many developing countries to pay more attention to the issues related to the use of synthetic plastics. Both industry and consumers are intrigued to discover the: economic characteristics, environmental consequences, and social attitudes to the benefits of biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics are useful in packaging, agriculture, gastronomy, consumer electronics, and the automotive industry. This paper seeks to explain the prospects of biodegradable plastics regarding social, economic, and environmental sustainability and recognizes the latest advances in enzyme-based biodegradation of plastics in order to reduce plastics' negative effects and to make the environment safe. A multi-disciplinary strategy is a unique approach, with studies carried out across the triple bottom line (TBL) approach on three distinct sustainability concepts (economic characteristics, environmental consequences, and social attitudes). These three subjects were carefully chosen for their respective targets. This paper has used ATLAS.ti 9 software tools to thoroughly analyze the literature to save, identify, and assess this study's data. Therefore, the research showed that the environmental component was the most critical factor with the economic second and social third. We review bio-based and biodegradable polymers and highlight the value of biodegradable end-of-life management.

With the increasingly serious pollution of plastics, biodegradable plastics (BDPs) have attracted attention as a new material that can replace conventional plastics in certain applications. The global production of BDPs also gradually increases in recent years. However, unfortunately, with the application of BDPs, some potential problems are gradually exposed. The biodegradability of BDPs needs suitable conditions, which is difficult for the natural environment to reach the necessary conditions. If the degradation conditions are not met, BDPs and conventional plastics are basically the same in terms of the longevity. The biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) can also be formed by BDPs entering the environment. Up to now, the research on the degradation and application of BDPs is relatively common. The environmental and ecological effects of the BMPs, the adsorption and release of toxic substances, and the role of BMPs as vectors of microorganisms, epiphytes, and plants still need to be studied. This paper focuses on the formation mechanism and the environmental behavior of BMPs. The role of BMPs as multiple stronger vectors of microorganisms and pollutants compared to conventional microplastics is also discussed. Systematic research on environmental pollution and ecotoxicology of BMPs should be carried out as soon as possible.

Biodegradable plastics (BDPs) have been introduced to replace conventional fossil-based non-biodegradable plastics in agricultural production to reduce the accumulation of plastic debris in soils. However, the degradation performance of commercially available BDP products in real soils and the response of soil microbial communities to biodegradation remain unclear. Here, we explored the degradation characteristics of a commercial BDP product (made from starch, polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT)) in different soils in a microcosm system over a period of 360 days. Temporal dynamics of associated bacterial communities in different soil niches (control soil, plastic surface soil and bulk soil (soil without close contact with plastics)) were profiled. Weight loss reached 42.0±1.2% to 48.0±2.2% in different soils after 360 days. The degradation of BDP followed the same pattern in different soils characterized by two distinct stages. In the first stage (day 0-30), BDPs experienced major weight loss (35.8-41.9%) which coincided with a drastic increase in the soil dissolve organic carbon (1.53-2.25 times the control soil) and the forming of distinct bacterial communities in the plastic surface soil. Thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the fast depletion of starch in this stage. In addition, observations with naked eyes and scanning electron microscope confirmed intensive microbial colonization on BDP surfaces. In the second stage (day 30-360), the degradation of remaining PLA and PBAT continued at a relatively slow rate. Meanwhile bacterial communities in the plastic surface soil started to gradually recover from the disturbance caused by fast biodegradation in the first stage in a soil-dependent manner. Our findings indicate that the degradation performance of BDPs was limited by the degradation rate of relatively recalcitrant components and the temporal dynamics of associated soil bacterial communities synchronized with the degradation of BDPs.

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) have been used to replace conventional plastics owing to their environmental harmless and ease of degradation. However, the aging processes of BPs in different environments remain unclear. In this study, we used poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) films as model BPs and investigated the 30-d aging behavior of PLA/PBAT films under four conditions (i.e., air without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, water without UV irradiation, air with UV irradiation, and water with UV irradiation). Our results showed that the aging of PLA/PBAT films was insignificant in all groups except the water with UV irradiation group. In the physical characterization, the PLA/PBAT films exhibited layered structures in water with UV irradiation condition, and the submicron- and nano-sized particles adhered to the bigger-sized fragments. In the chemical characterization, the carbonyl index (CI) of PLA/PBAT films in water with UV irradiation condition decreased from 3.84 to 1.36, and the oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio reached a maximum of 1.78 at 20 d and declined to 0.49 at 30 d, indicating that the oxygen-containing functional groups underwent bond breaking and showed a rapid aging process. This is mainly attributed to the combined effect of hydrolysis and photolysis increases the contact area of PLA/PBAT films and accelerates the aging process. Furthermore, based on two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis, we suggest that free radicals generated in water with UV irradiation conditions also accelerate the aging process of PLA/PBAT films. This study explored the aging processes of PLA/PBAT films under different conditions, which could aid in clarifying the environmental behavior and provide further information to assess the potential risks of BPs.

Biodegradable plastics have been proposed as a potential solution to plastic pollution, as they can be biodegraded into their elemental components by microbial action. However, the degradation rate of biodegradable plastics is highly variable across environments, leading to the potential for accumulation of plastic particles, chemical co-contaminants and/or degradation products. This paper reviews the toxicological effects of biodegradable plastics on species and ecosystems, and contextualises these impacts with those previously reported for conventional polymers. While the impacts of biodegradable plastics and their co-contaminants across levels of biological organisation are poorly researched compared with conventional plastics, evidence suggests that individual-level effects could be broadly similar. Where differences in the associated toxicity may arise is due to the chemical structure of biodegradable polymers which should facilitate enzymatic depolymerisation and the utilisation of the polymer carbon by the microbial community. The input of carbon can alter microbial composition, causing an enrichment of carbon-degrading bacteria and fungi, which can have wider implications for carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Furthermore, there is the potential for toxic degradation products to form during biodegradation, however understanding the environmental concentration and effects of degradation products are lacking. As global production of biodegradable polymers continues to increase, further evaluation of their ecotoxicological effects on organisms and ecosystem function are required.

Currently, microplastic pollution is more serious and complicates the toxic effects of other co-existing pollutants in the environment. However, the effect and mechanism of biodegradable plastics on the growth and metabolism of probiotic remain unclear. This work selected Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as model bacterium for a three-day exposure experiment to probe the issues. The results showed that 100 mg/L polylactic acid microplastics (PLA MPs) (3-4 mm, flake shape) caused oxidative damage to cell membranes, disrupted cell wall composition and inhibited cell growth by 21.2-27.5 %. The toxicity was not simply additive or synergistic effects when PLA MPs (100 mg/L) and copper ions (10 mg/L) coexisted. PLA MPs did not significantly increase the toxicity of copper to bacteria, instead triggered some mechanisms to resist the toxicity of copper. The bacteria formed spores to resist PLA MPs, while the copper ions toxicity was weaken by chelation and efflux. It is worth noting that copper ions instead increased the expression of genes related fengycin and iturin then improving the bacteriostatic activity of the probiotic. This paper deeply analyzes the toxicity mechanism of combined pollution on Bacillus amyloliquefacien, and also provides new perspective for helping to inhibit pathogenic bacteria under biodegradable microplastics and metal stress.

Microplastics (MPs) have been widely distributed on Earth and have drawn global concern for freshwater and marine ecosystems. Biodegradable plastics have risen in popularity to replace nonbiodegradable plastics all over the world. The effects of biodegradable plastics on denitrifying and anammox bacteria in freshwater sediment remain largely unknown. In this study, water column reactors containing polylactic acid (PLA) or polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) MPs in sediment were established to simulate lake ecosystems and analyze the effects of biodegradable MPs on sedimentary nitrogen transformation microorganisms. The total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations in the PLA and PBAT groups were slightly higher than those in the control group, which might be related to the slow degradation of these two plastics. Denitrifying and anammox bacterial diversities decreased after adding MPs to sediments for 30 days, and the dominant OTUs of these two bacteria were differentiated from the control. The abundance levels of nirS denitrifying and anammox bacteria on the PLA MP surface were significantly higher than those in the other groups (P 0.05), but they were lower in the PBAT groups than in the other groups. As an excellent electron donor for the denitrification process, lactic acid release from PLA degradation resulted in the enrichment of denitrifying and anammox bacteria on the MP surfaces. However, PBAT led to various responses of bacteria in an anaerobic environment. In addition, the redundancy analysis results indicated that total phosphorus, TOC and nitrate were strongly negatively correlated with the abundance levels of denitrifying and anammox bacteria. Our findings provided insight into the effects of MPs, especially the biodegradable ones, on sedimentary nitrogen-transformation bacteria.

The inhomogeneity of plastisphere and soil may result in different microbial communities, thus potentially affecting soil functions. Biodegradable plastics offer an alternative to conventional plastics, nevertheless, the inadequate end-of-life treatment of biodegradable plastics may release more microplastics. Herein, we collected PE and PBAT/PLA microplastics in plastic-mulching farmland in Hebei, China. The bacterial communities of soil, PE and PBAT/PLA plastisphere were investigated using 16 S high-throughput sequencing. We found that the structure of bacterial communities in PBAT/PLA plastisphere were significantly distinct from PE plastisphere and soil. The alpha diversities in PBAT/PLA plastisphere were significantly lower than PE plastisphere and soil. Statistical analysis of differentially ASVs suggested that PBAT/PLA microplastics act as a filter, enriching taxa with the capability to degrade plastic polymers such as Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Compared to PE plastisphere, PBAT/PLA plastisphere has networks of less complexity, lower modularity, and more competitive interactions. Predicted metabolic pathways involved in human diseases, carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism were promoted in PBAT/PLA plastisphere, along with the facilitation in abundance of genes associated with carbon and nitrogen cycling. Our results highlighted the uniqueness of plastisphere of biodegradable microplastics from conventional microplastics and their potential impact on soil functions.

Biodegradable plastic mulch film (BDM) is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional polyethylene mulch, and has been growingly used in agriculture. However, practical degradation performance of BDM, especially the widely used type of blended polylactic acid (PLA)/polybutylene adipate (PBAT) in different ratios, and microbial alteration in soil environments, remain largely unrevealed. In this study, four types of BDM blended with 40-80% PLA and 20-60% PBAT were comparatively investigated through microcosm soil incubation experiments for 105 days, and combined with conditions of different soil moisture or pH. Microbiome within film-surrounding soil were assayed using 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Results showed a trend of increasing degradation efficiency with the increase of PLA proportion, and 70% PLA and 30% PBAT group presented the highest weight loss rate, i.e., 60.16 ± 5.86%. In addition, degradation and aging of PLA/PBAT varied among different soil moisture and pH values. A moderate moisture, i.e., 60% and a neutral pH7.0 caused significantly high degradation efficiency compared to other moisture or pH conditions. Moreover, bacterial abundance and community structure in the surrounding soil were related to soil moisture and pH. PLA/PBAT incubation treatment induced a remarkable increase in abundance of degradation-related species Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas. Bacterial richness and diversity in soil correspondingly respond to ratio-different PLA/PBAT's degradation under moisture/pH-different conditions through a redundancy analysis. Altogether, these findings indicate that practical degradation of PLA/PBAT film is closely related to soil environments and bacterial community. It is significant for the application of biodegradable plastics in agriculture on the perspective of soil sustainability.

Biodegradable plastics, if they are not properly managed at their end-of-life, can have the same hazardous environmental consequences as conventional plastics. This study investigates the treatment of the main biodegradable plastics under mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion using biochemical methane potential test and the microorganisms involved in the process using amplicon sequencing of the 16 S rRNA. Here we showed that, only PHB and TPS undergone important and rapid biodegradation under mesophilic condition (38 °C). By contrast, PCL and PLA exhibited very low biodegradation rate as 500 days were required to reach the ultimate methane yield. Little or no degradation occurred for PBAT and PBS at 38 °C. Under thermophilic conditions (58 °C), TPS, PHB, and PLA reached high levels of biodegradation in a relatively short period (lt; 100 d). While PBS, PBAT, and PCL could not be converted into methane at 58 °C. PHB degraders (Enterobacter and Cupriavidus) and lactate-utilizing bacteria (Moorella and Tepidimicrobium) appeared to play an important role in the PHB and PLA degradation, respectively. This work not only provides crucial data on the anaerobic digestion of the main biodegradable plastics but also enriches the understanding of the microorganisms involved in this process, which are of great importance for future development of the treatment of biodegradable plastics in anaerobic digestion systems.

Crop safety Biodegradable mulches (BDM) are increasingly valued and used for substituting non-biodegradable plastic mulches polluting agricultural soils. They are tilled into soil, where they fragment and release compounds throughout their bio- degradation. The consequences of BDM use on the plant-soil environment have been partially studied with pristine and with artificially-weathered BDM fragments. However, to guarantee safety use of BDM, studies on the BDM debris ef- fects are required. For this, to determine potential effects of the field-weathering BDM on plants, a mesocosm experi- ment was performed by sowing seeds from two major plant species commonly cultivated with BDM, tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa), in plant pots containing pristine and field-weathered pieces from seven different BDM formulations, one paper mulch, a polyethylene (PE) mulch, and no-mulch control pots. Germination of both plant species was unaffected by any of the mulch treatments; however, PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate)-based BDM fragments severely inhibited tomato and lettuce plant growth, 90 and 95 %, respec- tively. Moreover, all pristine and field-weathered BDM significantly delayed lettuce plant development. Tomato plant growth progressed better, but growth retardation was also evidenced with most field-weathered BDM treatments. Overall, field-weathered fragments caused stronger effects on plants than the pristine unused ones. No effects were found for PE mulch, either pristine or field-weathered. The obtained results highlight that BDM debris may alter plant development depending on their nature and on their weathering, rather than on their physical presence, and ev- idence the need to conduct further experiments on the impact of field-weathered BDM on the plant-soil environment. Bioplastics (biodegradable plastics) potentially offer an encouraging alternative to conventional (petroleum-based) plastics. In practice, bioplastics inevitably generate a large number of bio-microplastics (bio-MPs, diameter5 mm) during the degradation progress. However, the impact of bio-MPs on plant and soil health within agroecosystems remains incomplete. Here, a field study was conducted to investigate the effect of two shapes (fiber and powder) of pure polylactic acid (PLA) bio-MPs on oat (Avena sativa L.) and soybean (Glycinemax (L.) Merr.) growth and soil health. Our results showed that PLA application at a representative soil loading rate of 0.2% (w/w) had no significant effect on soil enzyme activities, soil physicochemical properties (soil water content, pH, etc.), root characteristics, plant biomass, and crop yield. Thus, we conclude that soil quality, plant health, and ecosystem multifunctionality were not affected by PLA over one growing season (5 months) in the presence of either bio-MP shape (fiber and powder) for either crop species (oat and soybean). Overall, PLA based bio-MPs may not pose a significant threat to agroecosystem functions in the short term (days to months) in the field, thus may provide a viable environmentally benign solution to replace traditional non-biodegradable plastics in agroecosystems.

Biodegradable plastics have emerged as an ecological alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. Despite the recent advances in the effects of conventional microplastic on soil ecosystems, the ecological impact of biodegradable microplastics in soil environments remains poorly understood. Here, we performed soil microcosms with conventional (polyethylene and polystyrene) and biodegradable (polybutylene succinate and polylactic acid) microplastics to estimate their effects on the success patterns, co-occurrence networks, and the assembly mechanisms of soil bacterial communities. Biodegradable microplastics significantly altered the soil bacterial community composition with steeper temporal turnovers (rate: 0.317 - 0.514) compared to the conventional microplastic treatments (rate: 0.211 - 0.220). Network under biodegradable microplastics showed greater network complexity, including network size, connectivity, average clustering coefficient, and the number of keystone species, as compared with the conventional microplastic treatments. Additionally, the biodegradable microplastic network had higher robustness, which may be potentially due to the enhanced dissolved organic carbon contents in the soil treated with biodegradable microplastics. The bacterial community assembly was initially governed by deterministic homogeneous selection (93 - 100 %) under the stress of microplastics, but was progressively structured by increasing stochastic homogeneous dispersal (17.8 - 73.3 %) over time. The normalized stochasticity ratio also revealed that the application of microplastics increased the importance of stochastic processes following incubation. These findings greatly enhanced our understanding of the ecological mechanisms and interactions of soil bacterial communities in response to microplastic stress.

The starch-based film development has been extensively studied since, in general, it is possible to obtain transparent, non-toxic, odorless, good gas barrier, biodegradable, and tasteless samples. However, world hunger-related problems are a reality and the use of starches, a recognized carbohydrate source, in the packaging industry should be avoided. Thus, the use of different residual starchy can minimize the costs of production, promoting the development of innovative biomaterials, eliminating the competition with the food chain. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the impact of the cassava starch (CS) substitution by gelatinized starch (GS), a residue generated in the sieving step of starch processing, verifying possible changes in the final material characteristics. The raw materials characterization includes determination of amylose and moisture contents, centesimal composition, particle size distribution, and thermal analysis. After casting solution and drying processes, the samples were evaluated regarding the visual macroscopic and microscopic aspects showing continuous and homogeneous structure. The results were related to the physicochemical and mechanical properties. The GS addition promoted a decrease in the tensile strength (3.3 ± 0.1 MPa to 1.2 ± 0.3 MPa) and elastic modulus (52 ± 13 MPa to 10 ± 3 MPa) values, while the elongation percentage (160 ± 30% to 212 ± 14%) values seem to have not been so affected. It can be seen a high potential for the use of agro-industrial residues containing starch in bioplastic production.

In this study, biodegradable polymeric films (BPFs) based on chitosan and acrylic acid cross-linked with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) were developed for water retention and soil-conditioning applications in areas sufferings from water scarcity. A series of BPFs were prepared by varying the amount of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) (0.67% to 2.6%) and a correlation of the optimum amount of SiNPs with thermal stability, morphology, swellability (at various pH), degradability, and anti-microbial activity were deduced. The obtained results showed that the NP 8 (containing 2.51% of SiNPs) exhibited the maximum absorption capacity (1815%) in distilled water, whereas NP6 (including 1.88% of SiNPs) expressed the maximum thermal stability (T50% at 375.61 °C). The microscopic images further strengthen this observation because the maximum number of micro-porous cavities was shown on the surface of NP8. The time-dependent swelling response in distilled water accomplished that hydrophilicity (percentage swelling) of films was enhanced with an increase in the concentration of SiNPs. All BPFs samples exhibited inhibitory response against both gram-positive (for Staphylococcus aureus was 2.9 cm for NP6) and gram-negative (for Escherichia coli was 0.9 cm for NP8) bacteria. The biodegradation test inferred that the degradation of BPFs in soil did not affect the soil fertility as nano-silica is proven as growth-promoting miniatures. It can be concluded that these BPFs may be efficiently employed in the agriculture sector for water retention and as a soil conditioner.

In this content, a green approach for the ultrasound promoted in situ immobilization of Pd NPs over biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified ferrite NP (Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd) is developed. The structural and physicochemical features of the material were estimated using advanced analytical techniques like FT-IR, ICP-OES, FESEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and VSM. The magnetic material was catalytically explored in the oxidation of alcohols under ultrasonic waves. Sonication had a significant role in enhancing the catalytic performance in the alcohol's oxidation as compared to conventional heating. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst was efficiently recycled up to 10 times with nominal loss in catalytic activity. Towards the biological applications, the Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd nanocomposite showed high antioxidant activities against DPPH free radicals, comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In addition, it exhibited excellent cytotoxicity in terms of % cell viability against breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7), breast carcinoma (Hs 578Bst), infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma (Hs 319.T), and metastatic carcinoma (MDA-MB-453) cell lines. The best anti-breast cancer potential of the nanocomposite was observed in Hs 319.T cell line.

With the continuously increasing demands of plastic products in the current society, the challenge of disposing plastic waste is constantly increasing, leading to the urgent need of mitigating plastic pollution. As a consequence, much attention has been paid to biodegradable plastics due to their degradability in a bio-active environment under certain conditions. Biodegradable plastics herald vast development potentials and considerable market prospects. The degradation of numerous types of biodegradable plastics will be affected by many factors. A thorough understanding of degradation mechanisms as well as functional microbial strains and enzymes is the key to comprehensive utilization and efficient treatment and disposal of biodegradable plastics. The article summarized the types, properties, advantages and disadvantages, and main applications of common biodegradable plastics. The degradation mechanisms, functional microbial strains and enzymes, as well as the degradation degree and duration under different environmental conditions, were also summarized. This review may help better understand the degradation of biodegradable plastics wastes.

The degradable plastic poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered a potential replacement for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as the main component of mulch film. However, it is not clear whether PBAT is harmful to the plant-soil system. Thus, we determined the effects of LDPE microplastics (LDPE-MPs) and PBAT microplastics (PBAT-MPs) on the growth of Arabidopsis. The inhibitory effect of PBAT-MPs was greater than that of LDPE-MPs on the growth of Arabidopsis. Transcriptome analysis showed that PBAT-MPs severely disrupted the photosynthetic system of Arabidopsis and increased the expression levels of genes in drug transport-related pathways. PBAT-MPs increased the relative abundances of Bradyrhizobium, Hydrogenophaga, and Arthrobacter in the bulk soil and rhizosphere soil. The abundances of Variovorax, Flavobacterium, and Microbacterium increased in the plant root zone only under PBAT-MPs. Functional prediction analysis suggested that microorganisms in the soil and plant root zone could degrade xenobiotics. Furthermore, the degradation products from PBAT comprising adipic acid, terephthalic acid, and butanediol were more toxic than PBAT-MPs. Our findings demonstrate that PBAT-MPs may be degraded by microorganisms to produce chemicals that are highly toxic to plants. Thus, biodegradable plastics may pose a great risk to the environment.

We present an approach to fabricate biological matrix composites made entirely from cultured plant cells. We utilize the cell’s innate ability to synthesize nanofibrillar cell walls, which serve as the composite’s fundamental building blocks. Following a controlled compression/dehydration process, the cells arrange into lamellar structures with hierarchical features. We demonstrate that the native cell wall nanofibrils tether adjacent cells together through fibrillar interlocking and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. These interactions facilitate intercellular adhesion and eliminate the need for other binders. Our fabrication process utilizes the entire plant cell, grown in an in vitro culture; requires no harsh chemical treatments or waste-generating extraction or selection processes; and leads to bulk biocomposites that can be produced in situ and biodegrade in soil. The final mechanical properties are comparable to commodity plastics and can be further modulated by introducing filler particles.

To face the recent pandemic and comply with international legislation, new plastic objects (surgical masks, nitrile gloves, compostable plastics) have been produced, with a significant increase of their input into the marine environment, together with other common plastics. Given that floating plastic provides a suitable surface for settlement of micro-organism, biofilm accretion was studied in laboratory experiments. The characteristics of biofilm in terms of organic matter production and recycling were evaluated under natural and forced conditions, some of them resembling anthropogenic-affected states (eutrophication) and others environmental variability (darkness and oligotrophy). Under natural conditions, the different plastics, due to their structure and composition, hosted different biofilms. Thicker biofilm was observed on surgical mask and compostable plastic (organic carbon maxima of 35.0 ± 4.7 μg cm

As plastic consumption has increased, environmental problems associated with the accumulation of plastic wastes have started to emerge. These include the non-degradability of plastic and its disintegration into sub-micron particles. Although some biodegradable plastic products have been developed to relieve the landfill and leakage burden, a significant portion of discarded plastics are inevitably still incinerated. The concern here is that incinerating plastics may result in the emission of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Moreover, lack of policy and the limited market share contributes to the indiscriminate discarding of biodegradable plastics, whereby it is mixed and subsequently incinerated with non-degradable plastics. The aim of this study was therefore to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the VOCs emitted from both non-degradable and biodegradable plastics during combustion employing gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Here, non-degradable poly(vinyl chloride) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) emitted 10-115 and 6-22 ppmv of VOCs, respectively. These emission levels were more than 100 times higher than the VOC concentrations of 0.1-0.5 and 0.1-1.8 ppmv obtained for biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate and polylactic acid, respectively. Notably, due to the presence of a repeating butylene group in both non-degradable and biodegradable plastics, 1,3-butadiene accounted for the highest concentration among the VOCs identified, with concentrations of 6-116 ppmv and 0.5-558 ppmv obtained, respectively. During the evaluation of gas barrier films employed for food packaging purposes, non-degradable aluminum-coated multilayered films emitted 9-515 ppmv of VOCs, compared to the 2-41 ppmv VOCs emitted by biodegradable nanocellulose/nanochitin-coated films. Despite the significantly lower levels of VOCs emitted during the incineration of biodegradable plastics, this does not represent suitable waste treatment solution because VOCs are still emitted during incomplete combustion. This study aims to encourage further research into diverse combustion conditions for plastics and stimulate discussions on the fate of discarded plastics.

To adopt carbohydrate polymers as biodegradable plastic is a promising strategy to eliminate the pollution evoked by oil-based plastics. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) with different glycerol and tartaric acid (TA) contents were prepared by twin-screw extrusion, then extruded with poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) to obtain PBAT/TPS. A "Lever Principle" was adopted for adjusting the hydrogen bond strength of TPS by varying TA and glycerol contents which influenced the blocking force, mechanical properties and migration quantity of PBAT/TPS (PT) films manufactured by film blowing. Noteworthy, as the glycerol content decreased from 27.5 to 15 %, with 25 times "Lever Principle" for increasing TA content, the migration weight and blocking force decreased from 5.8 % and 58.4 × 10

The influence of the inoculum-substrate ratio (ISR) on the mesophilic and thermophilic biochemical methane potential test of two biodegradable plastics was evaluated. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) were selected for this study, the first for being recalcitrant to mesophilic anaerobic digestion (AD) and the second, by contrast, for being readily biodegradable. Background This work evaluated the performances of protein-based bioplastics obtained from black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) prepupae. Protein films were synthesized by film casting, using both the whole proteins and their soluble fraction at pH = 10. The effects of glycerol as a plasticizer and of citric acid as a mild crosslinker on film properties were also evaluated. Results Films obtained using the soluble protein fraction were the strongest, as well as the most homogeneous and transparent ones. Protein mild crosslinking improved film tensile properties, especially in films obtained with the whole protein fraction. Non-crosslinked samples had a high affinity with water while crosslinking almost eliminated the ability of films to absorb water. All protein-based films proved to be effective barriers to red light (transmittance less than 2%). Conclusions Bioplastics derived from black soldier fly prepupae may find applications in the agricultural sector (biodegradable pots, mulching films, utensils) and deserve to be tested for food and non-food packaging. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Petrochemical plastics have become a cause of pollution for decades and finding alternative plastics that are environmental friendly. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a biopolyester produced by microbial cells, has characteristics (biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic) that make it appropriate as a biodegradable plastic substance. The different forms of PHA make it suitable to a wide choice of products, from packaging materials to biomedical applications. The major challenge in commercialization of PHA is the cost of manufacturing. There are a lot of factors that could affect the efficiency of a development method. The development of new strategic parameters for better synthesis, including consumption of low cost carbon substrates, genetic modification of PHA-producing strains, and fermentational strategies are discussed. Recently, many efforts have been made to develop a method for the cost-effective production of PHAs. The isolation, analysis as well as characterization of PHAs are significant factors for any developmental process. Due to the biodegradable and biocompatible properties of PHAs, they are majorly used in biomedical applications such as vascular grafting, heart tissue engineering, skin tissue repairing, liver tissue engineering, nerve tissue engineering, bone tissue engineering, cartilage tissue engineering and therapeutic carrier. The emerging and interesting area of research is the development of self-healing biopolymer that could significantly broaden the operational life and protection of the polymeric materials for a broad range of uses. Biodegradable and biocompatible polymers are considered as the green materials in place of petroleum-based plastics in the future.

Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC Na) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the films and exhibited good interaction with the polymer matrix. The addition of pectin led to significantly higher mechanical and optical properties of the composite film, compared with SDF/CMC-Na composite film. The tensile strength reached 21.419 ± 2.22 MPa, and the minimum transparency reduced to 88.9% ± 0.42%, with increasing pectin. Notably, the water resistance and oil resistance were enhanced. The composite films also possessed satisfactory antioxidant activity, with a DPPH-free radical scavenging rate of 46.33% ± 0.72%, while antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was not obvious. Antioxidant and antibacterial SDF/pectin/CMC-Na composite films with enhanced mechanical, optical and barrier properties are excellent candidates for active edible packaging.

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a compostable polymer, filled with different weight percentage of unbleached nano chitin (NC; 10%, 30% and 50%), a biodegradable filler from crustacean waste, were prepared from the extruded blends by injection moulding and 3D printing. The nanochitin required was prepared from chitin isolated from prawn shells (Fenneropenaeus indicus). The nanochitin crystals were observed to contain carboxylic acid surface functional groups as assessed by FT-IR, 13C solid state NMR (SS NMR) spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements and the extent of the same was estimated by potentiometric titration. The PBAT-NC nanocomposites were characterized SS NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction, dynamic mechanical analysis, DSC and TGA. Thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined. The moulded nanocomposites changed more and more rigid with increasing weight percentage of NC without significant change in the tensile strength. The TGA indicated that the thermal stability of PBAT could be improved but not significantly by the addition of NC. Wound healing was enhanced in the presence of the nanocomposite while in vivo toxicity was significant at high concentration. The PBAT-NC nanocomposites could be moulded in to useful articles such as laptop charger cover, rat cover for washing machine, planters and key holders under conditions similar to that used in the processing of LDPE.

Green biocomposites based on corn starch plasticized with isosorbide and glycerol and filled with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were processed. The structural interactions, dynamomechanical properties, water absorption, and soil biodegradability were investigated by different techniques considering the effect of the type and amount of plasticizer and the MCC addition. The changes along the time of the structural interactions and the dynamomechanical properties of these materials and the influence of the retrogradation phenomenon were also studied. The use of isosorbide as plasticizer instead of glycerol improved the stiffness, the water absorption and the biodegradation rate of thermoplastic starch (TPS). Moreover, no evidence of retrogradation for isosorbide was observed. An isosorbide content of 35% and the addition of MCC filler enhanced in a greater extent these properties with a complete biodegradability in 7 month. These green biocomposites can be an alternative for food packaging applications.

In this paper, the degradation behavior of two kinds of polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradable material products (pure PLA cup cover and modified PLA straw) was studied. It was found that under the composting environment specified in the International Standard, in the first 35 days, the degradation rate of the straw (with 50%-60% poly butylenes succinate (PBS)) was faster than that of the pure PLA cup cover, but in the later stage, the PLA cup cover exceeded the straw and disintegrated preferentially, and both could be degraded in about 70 days. After further analyzing the far-infrared (FIR, can also be called THz) and mid infrared (MIR) spectra of cup cover and straw, we observed that the material structure had not changed until disintegration, only the ester bond was hydrolyzed, the polymers became oligomers, which could be reflected in the change of the effective area of the characteristic peak at 7.15 THz (cup cover, labeled 1921) and 6.99 THz (straw, labeled 4386) in the THz spectrum. With the degradation, the effective area decreased continuously. Due to the strong absorption of the material in MIR band, most characteristic peaks were flattened and lost analytical value. The bivariate correlation of degradation time, biodegradation rate, total carbon dioxide release and the effective area of the characteristic peak at 7.15 THz (1921) and 6.99 THz (4386) in THz spectrum was analyzed by SPSS software. We discovered that the degradation time was significantly positively correlated with biodegradation rate and carbon dioxide release at the level of 0.01 and negatively correlated with the effective area of characteristic peak at the level of 0.05. The biodegradation rate was significantly negatively correlated with the effective area of characteristic peak at the level of 0.01. Taking the degradation time as the independent variable and the biodegradation rate, carbon dioxide release and effective area of characteristic peak as the dependent variables, we got that the THz spectrum could be used to describe the degradation behavior of PLA products as long as appropriate coefficient correction was made. In this way, we could separate from the laboratory environment, study the impact of environmental diversification on material degradation performance, and reduce the cost of material degradation performance identification. Using density functional theory (DFT), reduced density gradient (RDG) method and visualization software, the changes of weak interaction position and intensity in the molecule during the polymerization of lactic acid into PLA were further analyzed. We found that the vibration of ester bond corresponded to the characteristic peak with weak intensity in the spectrum, and the peak with large intensity mainly originated from the out-of-plane swing of O-H bond in the molecule.

The search for alternatives to conventional oil-based polymers gave rise to novel materials commercialized under different “green” labels based on compostability. However, current international standards are not effective in predicting actual biodegradability of plastic objects in natural scenarios, and degradation of these novel bioplastics in marine conditions is unwarranted. We present a simple and rapid standard protocol based on their biological oxygen demand, intended to support policy-makers and plastic industry in the search for truly marine-biodegradable plastics. Improvements include: development of an environmentally relevant nutrient formulation following Redfield ratio (106C:16 N:1P); use of a natural inoculum representative of marine habitats (sediment pore water); standardization of the test material by grinding to particles below 250 μm to shorten the incubation period, and selection of a truly biodegradable biopolymer (PHB), used as positive control. Biodegradable plastics can reach full degradation when disposed of appropriately and thus alleviate plastic pollution caused by conventional plastics. Conventional plastics are being slowly replaced by biodegradable ones to prevent plastic pollution. However, in the natural environment, the biodegradation of plastics is usually slow or incomplete due to unfavorable conditions and leads to faster micro-bioplastic formation. Many analytical methods were developed to determine microplastics, but micro-bioplastics are still overlooked. This work presents a simple method for determining poly-3-hydroxybutyrate and polylactic acid micro-bioplastics in soil based on the thermogravimetry–mass spectrometry analysis of low molecular gases evolved during pyrolysis. For the method development, model soils containing different soil organic carbon contents were spiked with micro-bioplastics. Specific gaseous pyrolysis products of the analytes were identified, while the ratio of their amounts appeared to be constant above the level of detection of the suggested method. The constant ratio was explained as a lower soil influence on the evolution of the gaseous product, and it was suggested as an additional identification parameter. The advantages of the presented method are no sample pretreatment, presumably no need for an internal standard, low temperature needed for the transfer of gaseous products and the possibility of using its principles with other, cheaper detectors. The method can find application in the verification of biodegradation tests and in the monitoring of soils after the application of biodegradable products.

We discovered a biological mechanism supporting microbial degradation of bio-based poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) plastic in soils under ambient and future climates.

Biobased and biodegradable plastic mulch films (aka, mulch biofilm) have emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic mulch films in agriculture, promising to reduce soil contamination with plastic residues through in situ biodegradation. However, current standards certifying biodegradable plastics cannot predict biodegradability in natural settings. The scarce studies considering the possible biodegradation and ecotoxicity of mulch biofilms in soil systems question the environmental friendliness of these alternative options. This study assessed the biodegradation of a commercially available mulch biofilm by the soil-dwelling fungus Penicillium brevicompactum (in solid culture media and soil for 15 and 28 days, respectively), and the ecotoxicological effects of mulch biofilm microplastics on the earthworm Eisenia andrei (pristine or UV-weathered, at 0.125-0.250-0.500 g/kg). Results (from microplastics' mass loss, microscopy, and FTIR spectroscopy) suggest that the presence of P. brevicompactum promotes mulch biofilm's biodegradation. Exposure to environmental concentrations of pristine biofilm microplastics (and its ingestion) increased earthworms' sensitivity to touch, induced physiological alterations, decreased energy reserves, and decreased their reproduction (30%). Conversely, exposure to weathered biofilm microplastics slightly increased earthworms' sensitivity, as well as carbohydrate reserves,without affecting their reproduction. The tested mulch biofilm seems to be, at first sight, an environmentally friendly alternative as it presented susceptibility for biodegradation by a widespread fungus, and the absence of ecotoxicological chronic effects on a key macroinvertebrate species in soil ecosystems when considering environmental relevant concentrations and plastics weathered conditions. Notwithstanding, the obtained results highlight the need to revise current standards, as they often neglect the role of, and their chronic effects on, naturally occurring organisms.
