Abstract

This chapter describes a number of time-frequency (t, f) performance quality measures specifically developed as criteria for performance enhancement for a given application. The adopted performance measures are defined using objective criteria followed by time-frequency distribution (TFD) enhancement methods to improve the (t, f) concentration, resolution, and readability of TFDs. The topic is covered in nine sections. Hyperbolic FM signals are well described by the affine Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD), a method related to time-scale analysis and the wavelet transform (Section 7.1). A general procedure for enhancing the time-frequency resolution and readability of TFDs is the reassignment principle described in Section 7.2. Techniques for measuring the concentration of TFDs and for automatic optimization of their parameters are presented based on entropy measures (Section 7.3). Another approach defines a resolution performance measure using local measurements in the (t, f) domain, such as relative amplitudes of auto-terms and cross-terms (Section 7.4). Then, a comparison of postprocessing methods in the (t, f) domain is presented (Section 7.5). The last four topics focus on time-frequency compressive sensing (Section 7.6); signal complexity estimation using (t, f) entropy measures (Section 7.7); time-frequency analysis using neural networks (Section 7.8); and attempts to unify time-frequency, time-scale, filter banks, wavelets, and the discrete-time Gabor transform using product functions and cascaded frames are presented briefly as they may assist in the selection of the best-performing method for a given application (Section 7.9).

Abstract

An experimental spectroscopic investigation of some neutron rich Mg and Al isotopes around the shell closure N=20 has been performed. The delayed neutron and $\gamma$ spectra, following the $\beta$-decay of $^{33}$Mg and $^{35}$Al have been measured using the delayed neutron detector array TONNERRE coupled with high efficiency EXOGAM clover detectors, a LEPS detector and eight low-energy neutron detectors. A detailed analysis of such spectra allows one to construct the level schemes of their daughters, $^{32,33)$Al and $^{34,35}$Si. The resulting spectroscopic information will provide stringent tests of large scale shell model calculations including np - nh excitations aimed at the understanding of the structural effects occurring in this region.

Abstract

The γ spectroscopy of 25, 27 Ne and 26, 27 Na was studied from the reaction of 26 Ne with a deuterium target in inverse kinematics at 9.7 MeV/nucleon. The selectivity of the (d,p), (d,t), and (d,n) transfer reactions provides new spectroscopic information on low-lying states. The validity of the sd shell-model space for these nuclei isdiscussed.

Abstract

The 4He+2n and t+t clustering of the 6He ground state were investigated by means of the transfer reaction 6He(p,t)4He at 25 MeV/nucleon. The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics at GANIL with the SPEG spectrometer coupled to the MUST array. Experimental data for the transfer reaction were analyzed by a DWBA calculation including the two neutrons and the triton transfer. The couplings to the 6He --> 4He + 2n breakup channels were taken into account with a polarization potential deduced from a coupled-discretized-continuum channels analysis of the 6He+1H elastic scattering measured at the same time. The influence on the calculations of the 4He+t exit potential and of the triton sequential transfer is discussed. The final calculation gives a spectroscopic factor close to one for the 4He+2n configuration as expected. The spectroscopic factor obtained for the t+t configuration is much smaller than the theoretical predictions., 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted in PRC

Abstract

A new method to determine compound nuclear lifetimes at high excitation energies is proposed and applied to the system C-12(Si-28, alpha)Ar-36 at two different bombarding energies, 190 and 277 MeV. The alpha particle spectra show a structure which directly reflects the fluctuating behavior of the first de-excitation step. Coherence widths and thus lifetimes for the nucleus Ar-36 were obtained via a correlation function analysis. The results at low excitation energies are consistent with standard statistical models while the result at high excitation energy is compatible with a theoretically predicted change of the level density parameter. Abstract

LPSC-si ;; There is currently in the nuclear physics community a strong interest in the use of beams of accelerated radioactive ions. Although a fast glance at the nuclide chart immediately shows the vast unknown territories on the neutron-rich side of the valley of beta stability, only few projects are concerned with the neutron-rich nuclides.The SPIRAL-II program aims at studying the techniques for delivering beams of neutron-rich radioactive nuclidesat energies of a few MeV per nucleon. For that purpose, some study groups have been formed to evaluate the possibility ofsuch a project inthe different components: physics case, target-ion sources, drivers, postacceleration and general infrastructure. Abstract

The energy spectra of the γ-rays emitted in the 35Cl + 92Mo reaction at incident energy E = 260 MeV were measured in coincidence with the ejectiles produced in dissipative reaction events. The cumulative energy spectrum of the γ-rays coming from the decay of the ejectiles was calculated within the statistical model and its comparison to the experimental spectrum evidences an excess in the data for Eγ = 8 to 12 MeV. Such an excess, fitted with a Lorentz curve, is attributed to the preequilibrium GDR γ-decay of the intermediate dinuclear system. The centroid energy of the Lorentz curve corresponds to a dipole oscillation along the symmetry axis of the system and its width is found to be comparable to that of the ground state GDR low energy component of the deformed dinucleus. The small quantal dispersion Δl = (10.3 ± 0.1)ħ of the entrance channel angular momentum, determined by analysing the dissipative fragment angular distribution in the framework of the Strutinsky model, is suggested to limit the broadening of the preequilibrium GDR width.

Abstract

La théorie des ondelettes est née au milieu des années quatre-vingts pour répondre aux problèmes de résolution temps-fréquence des méthodes de type Fourier. En effet, nombre de signaux non-stationnaires nécessitent une analyse dont la résolution fréquentielle (respectivement temporelle) varie avec la localisation temporelle (respectivement fréquentielle). C'est pour permettre cette flexibilité que les ondelettes, un nouveau concept d'analyse dite «multi-résolution» ou «multi-échelle», ont vu le jour. Après une présentation succincte de la transformation en ondelettes continue, nous nous focaliserons sur sa version discrète, notamment l'algorithme de Mallat, qui est à la transformation en ondelettes ce que la FFT est à la transformée de Fourier. Nous considérerons également l'important problème de la conception de filtres générateurs d'ondelettes (filtres de Daubechies, par exemple). Par ailleurs, nous étudierons de récentes généralisations ou extensions (en particulier, multi-ondelettes, paquets d'ondelettes et frames) rendues nécessaires par certaines limitations de la théorie des ondelettes. Enfin, nous détaillerons quelques applications qui font le succès actuel des ondelettes et plus généralement, des méthodes temps-échelle (compression et débruitage, mise en correspondance d'images, …). L'un des buts de ce chapitre aura ainsi été de mettre en évidence la fertilisation croisée entre des approches parfois assez théoriques, où mathématiques et sciences de l'ingénieur se marient avec bonheur.

Abstract

The emission of hard photons and pre-equilibrium protons has been investigated in exclusive experiments performed with MEDEA detector The observation of the gamma-proton anticorrelation indicates that the dominant production mechanism is the first-chance neutron-proton (np) collisions. The anisotropic angular distributions point out the presence of screening effects and are reminiscent of the free np scattering thus giving information of the space-time origin of the energetic protons. Protons, with energy more than twice the kinematical limit for nucleon-nucleon (NN) collisions, have been observed in several reactions around the Fermi energy.
