Congenital maxillomandibular synechia is a rare malformation that is characterized by a fusion of the maxilla and mandible. The fusion is fibrous or bony and prevents mouth opening, which causes difficulties in feeding and occasionally in breathing. Although extremely rare, neonatologists must understand the disease because it can be fatal and require emergency treatment after birth. We report the case of a very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infant with congenital maxillomandibular synechia and other malformations, including cleft palate, syndactyly, and cryptorchidism. The patient presented with extremely limited mouth opening, and endotracheal intubation seemed impossible; fortunately, the patient did not have respiratory distress syndrome. The patient underwent surgical release of the fibrous bands on days 10 and 17, and good mouth opening was achieved. The patient was able to consume breast milk orally and was discharged home at a corrected gestational age of 1 month without recurrence of difficulty in mouth opening or any sequelae. This is the first reported case of a VLBW infant with congenital maxillomandibular synechia who required more complicated management of feeding, surgical intervention, and anesthesia.

After our coauthors described the first remote-access parathyroidectomy (RAP) series in 2000, several other approaches were developed. No systematic review has been performed to classify and evaluate RAP techniques. We performed a literature search using PubMed and Cochrane Library (CENTRAL). A total of 71 studies met our inclusion/exclusion criteria. RAP can be categorized into five approaches: (1) endoscopic and robotic axillary, (2) anterior chest, (3) transoral, (4) retroauricular, and (5) a combination of these approaches. The limited data in the literature suggest that the cure rates and safety of RAP are in no way inferior to those of open parathyroidectomy. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages, and the recommendations for the selection of each approach are listed. The selection of approach methods might depend on the surgeon's experience and familiarity and the patient's preference and disease status.

Nickel (Ni) is an essential micronutrient for plants although it is considered toxic when present in excess in the soil. This study investigated the transfer of Ni from the soil to rice in terraced paddy fields affected by serpentinite, which contains an anomalously higher Ni content compared with other geological materials. Soils, soil solutions, and rice plants were collected at several different growing stages from three adjacent terraced paddy fields subject to the same water and fertilizer management. Temporal changes in their elemental compositions revealed that a higher concentration of Ni was dissolved in the soil solution during flooded conditions, probably due to the co-solubilization with Mn oxides under low redox potential conditions. However, rice accumulated Ni at a higher rate during the drainage period than in the flooding period. Although the Ni concentration in the soil solution was lowest in the drainage period, the relative concentration to Fe (i.e., Ni/Fe ratio) was much higher than that in flooded conditions. These relationships suggest that a potential measure to counter the transfer of Ni from the soil to rice in serpentine-affected paddy fields is to increase Fe phytoavailability during the drainage period.

The potential mechanisms that drive the behavior of subducted oceanic plates at the 660-km discontinuity are subject to debate. Here we conduct logistic regression analysis and model selection to determine the key subduction-zone parameters in natural subduction zones that discriminate the plate behavior along the discontinuity. We select the key variables based on three information criteria: leave-one-out cross-validation score (LOO), Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Among the 17 subduction-zone parameters analyzed, only the trench velocity, convergence rate, and trench width are selected in the simplest model that minimizes BIC. The thermal parameter and several other variables are also selected to minimize AIC and LOO. Our results suggest that a stagnant slab occurs along the 660-km discontinuity when there is a narrow oceanic plate and a retreating trench in natural subduction zones, which has also been modeled in previous numerical simulations. Neither the stress nor the deformation rate of the upper-plate margin is selected in the three optimal models, which suggests that back-arc spreading in natural subduction zones does not globally characterize plate behavior at the 660-km discontinuity, although back-arc spreading and a stagnant slab coincide in some numerical simulations. The combination of subduction-zone data analysis and numerical simulations will therefore provide deep insights into the dynamics of Earth’s deep interior.

We investigated soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and the quantitative relationship between SOC and geochemical properties in tropical surface and subsurface soils, where information on various soil geochemical properties remains limited. We used soil samples from 178 sites in Indonesia, Thailand, Cameroon, and Tanzania as tropical soils and 34 sites in Japan as a comparison. The tropical soils were acidic, formed under high precipitation. We separated the soil samples into three groups based on the degree of weathering. We applied correlation and single regression analyses between SOC and geochemical properties including oxalate extractable Al and Fe (Alo + Feo), pyrophosphate extractable Al and Fe (Alp + Fep), and clay + silt. In the subsurface soils, Alo + Feo and Alp + Fep were strongly correlated with SOC (r = 0.79–0.85 and 0.58–0.85, respectively), and the quantitative relationships of SOC with these properties were similar in all the weathering groups (4–5 and 5–8, respectively). On the other hand, no strong correlation with SOC or similar quantitative relationships among the weathering groups were found for clay + silt. In the surface soils, Alo + Feo and Alp + Fep were correlated with SOC (r = 0.48–0.56 and 0.55–0.76, respectively), but the ratio of C to active Al and Fe was higher probably because of the large C input. Our results highlight the importance of Alo + Feo and Alp + Fep in SOC storage, of which the ratios to SOC are similar in each of the surface and subsurface soils regardless of the weathering degree.

Surgical management has not been encouraged in patients with trisomy 18 (T18) and congenital heart diseases due to poor survival. This study aimed to investigate (1) the appropriateness of palliative surgeries followed by intracardiac repair (ICR) (i.e., two-stage ICR) for patients with a large ventricular septal defect (VSD) and T18, and (2) its impact on their long-term outcomes. Medical charts of patients with VSD and T18 who underwent two-stage ICR at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center between January 2005 and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data, timing, and types of palliative surgeries, information related to ICR, peri- and postoperative clinical information, postoperative survival, and cause of death were collected. The long-term prognosis of patients treated with two-stage ICR was compared with that of patients treated with primary ICR and palliative surgery without ICR. Overall, 18 (2 male, 16 female) patients underwent two-stage ICR. Pulmonary artery banding was the initial palliative surgery in all patients after a median duration of 19.5 (range 6–194) days of life. The median age and the mean body weight at the time of ICR were 18.2 (7.6–50.7) months and 6.0 ± 1.0 kg, respectively. The mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance index before ICR were 19.1 ± 7.3 mmHg and 3.4 ± 2.0 U m2, respectively. Overall, 17/18 (94%) patients were discharged after ICR. Fourteen (78%) patients were alive during data collection. None of the patients died of cardiac insufficiency, and the median duration of survival was 46.3 (14.3–186.4) months since birth. Most patients required cardiac medications rather than pulmonary vasodilators at the last follow-up. During the study period, three patients underwent primary ICR, and 46 underwent palliative surgery without ICR. Of those who underwent primary ICR, two died in the hospital on the first and 48th day following ICR, and the third died 179 days after the ICR. The Log-rank test revealed a significantly longer survival for the patients treated with two-stage ICR compared with those treated with palliative surgery without ICR (P = 0.003). Two-stage ICR improves the long-term survival of patients with VSDs and T18. This safe surgical strategy can also prevent pulmonary hypertension in such patients.

BACKGROUND: Remote-access thyroidectomy and its cosmetic merit have been widely accepted, but remote-access parathyroidectomy has not become common. There are few reports about the risks and effectiveness of a remote-access endoscopic parathyroidectomy. Herein, we evaluated the risks and benefits of total endoscopic parathyroidectomy (TEP) for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). We retrospectively compared the surgical outcomes of TEP and open minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP). METHODS: We analyzed the cases of 28 patients with PHPT who were scheduled to undergo a MIP at Mita Hospital (Tokyo) during the period from April 2015 to March 2019, all of whom were presumed preoperatively to have a single adenoma. RESULTS: Eleven of the patients underwent a TEP (10 females, one male; mean age 54.2 years). The other 17 patients underwent an open MIP (11 females, 6 males; mean age 63.5 years). The younger patients and the females tended to select endoscopic surgery as their treatment. International audience; The Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011 generated a 3000 km2 plume of soils heavily contaminated with 137Cs. Decontamination was completed early in 2019. Typhoon Hagibis was the first extreme event that occurred in the region after decontamination. Its impact on sediment sources and sediment 137Cs contamination was investigated through the application of a sediment fingerprinting procedure using spectrocolorimetry and geochemical properties. Sediment deposits (n=24) were collected in the Mano and Niida River catchments after the 2019 typhoons, and their signature was compared to that of potential sources (e.g., cropland, forests, and subsurface; n=57). Results demonstrate the dominance of cropland as the main source of sediment (mean: 54%) followed by forests (41%) with much lower contributions of subsurface material (5%). Overall, 137Cs concentrations in sediment were on average 84%–93% lower than the levels recorded after the accident in 2011, which demonstrates the effectiveness of cropland decontamination.

Large variations in the maximum earthquake magnitude ($$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max ) have been observed among the world’s subduction zones. There is still no universal relationship between $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max and a given subduction-zone parameter, such as plate age, plate dip angle, or plate velocity, which suggests that multiple parameters control $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max . Here, we conduct exhaustive variable selections that are based on three evaluation criteria; leave-one-out cross-validation errors (LOOCVE), Akaike information criterion (AIC), and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) to determine the combination of subduction-zone parameters that best explains $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max . Multiple linear regression analyses are applied using 18 subduction-zone parameters as potential candidates for the explanatory variables of $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max . The minimum BIC is obtained when five variables (trench sediment thickness, existence of an accretionary prism, upper-plate crustal thickness, bending radius of the subducting oceanic plate, and trench depth) are selected as explanatory variables; each variable contributes positively to $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max . Minimum LOOCVE and AIC values are obtained when eight variables (the five parameters for BIC, plus the along-strike plate convergence rate, age of the subducting plate, and maximum depth of the subducting plate) are selected. Our selection of the trench sediment thickness and plate bending radius contributing to $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max is consistent with previous studies. The results show that increasing upper-plate crustal thickness results in a large $$M_{{\text{max}}}$$ M max . In addition to smoothing the subducting-plate interface via subducted sediments, along-dip extension of the crustal area along the convergent plate boundary would be important for generating a large earthquake. Remote-access total endoscopic thyroidectomy (TET) is a recently established approach that can avoid producing scars in the neck. There are no clear surgical indications for TET for benign nodules or for malignant tumors at present. We report a successful TET in a 50-year-old Japanese woman with follicular lymphoma of the thyroid gland after an open neck biopsy. She had been referred to us with a neck tumor noted 2 months earlier. Because of adhesion, we performed a combined resection of the thyroid and partial right sternohyoid muscle. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other report of a TET performed after open neck surgery. Our patient's case demonstrates that (a) the cosmetic outcome of TET is clearly superior to that of conventional open neck surgery, and (b) a TET can be suitable even for reoperation if carefully selected.

Potassium (K) and radiocaesium (RCs) were chemically extracted from soils derived from granite (G soils) and sedimentary rock (S soils) in Fukushima, Japan. The extractants employed were 1 M HNO3, concentrated HNO3, and HF + HClO4. As S soils contain a lower amount of trioctahedral 2:1 phyllosilicates than G soils, the RCs/K ratio was higher in S soils than in G soils with 1 M HNO3 extraction, indicating that the potential risk of soil-to-plant transfer of RCs is higher in S soils than in G soils. In conclusion, information about surface geology is important in predicting the spatial pattern of soil characteristics related to transferability of RCs.

Soil erosion is an emerging concern threatening sustainability of forest ecosystems. In case of Japan, one of the driving forces of accelerating soil erosion is heavy deer browsing and trampling. To investigate the effect of deer and clear-cutting on soil erosion, we set up three experimental plots at a slope (24°–27°) of a forest ecosystem with high density of deer, i.e., the fenced plot [F], the non-fenced plot [NF], and the fenced + clear-cut plot [F + C]. The amounts of eroded soil, surface runoff, and loss of nutrients were measured in each experimental plot for 1 year. The amount of eroded soils were in the order of F (1.81 t ha−1 yr−1) 93%) was derived from the loss of soil particles. In conclusion, we should conserve the forest ecosystems through preventing soil erosion because heavy deer browsing and trampling and clear-cutting of trees would lead to the accelerated soil erosion and loss of nutrients.

After our group described the first remote-access thyroidectomy series in 2000, the procedure has been further developed. Although a thoracoscopic approach with a conventional open cervical incision for thyroid goiters with mediastinal extension has been performed at many institutions, remote-access thyroidectomy for cervicomediastinal goiters has not been established. We have performed combined thoracoscopic and axillary subcutaneous endoscopic thyroidectomies (axillo-thoracic endoscopic thyroidectomies). Here, we describe a novel technique for performing a remote-access thyroidectomy for a cervicomediastinal goiter (CMG).The patients with CMGs who agreed to an axillo-thoracic endoscopic thyroidectomy at one of two hospitals in Japan underwent a remote-access thyroidectomy.We performed the axillo-thoracic endoscopic right or left hemithyroidectomy successfully, but most of the patients did not require the thoracoscopic procedure. None of the patients had complications, and none was converted to an open thyroidectomy.Most thyroid goiters with substernal extension can be removed by the axillary approach, but some cases require a thoracoscopic approach. The novel approach described herein (axillo-thoracic endoscopic thyroidectomy) enables the safe excision of a CMG with high patient satisfaction for selected patients.

Pancreatic serous neoplasms are rare tumors that are usually benign. However, histopathological differentiation between benign (serous cystadenoma) and malignant (serous cystadenocarcinoma) lesions is difficult. We present the case of a patient with pancreatic serous cystadenocarcinoma that was diagnosed with liver metastasis 7 years after the resection of the primary serous neoplastic lesion. A woman in her 60 s was diagnosed with pancreatic serous cystadenoma based on imaging and histopathological examination findings. The tumor was resected, and the patient was followed up every 6 months to monitor tumor progression. At 7 years after the resection of the primary lesion, liver tumors showing marked flare-like contrast enhancements were detected on arterial phase computed tomography findings and on dynamic magnetic resonance imaging findings acquired 60 s after the administration of a contrast agent. Laparoscopic segmental hepatectomy of S4 and S6 was performed to resect these tumors. Histopathological examination revealed that these tumors were metastatic and developed from the primary lesion. Therefore, a diagnosis of serous cystadenocarcinoma was confirmed. The flare-like contrast enhancement around the metastatic liver lesions on computed tomography and dynamic magnetic resonance images may be an indicator of serous cystadenocarcinoma with liver metastasis that could assist in diagnosis.

Radiocesium (RCs) is selectively adsorbed on interlayer sites of weathered micaceous minerals, which can reduce the mobility of RCs in soil. Therefore, soils developed from mica-deficient materials (e.g. serpentine soils) may have a higher risk of soil-to-plant transfer of RCs. Soils were collected from three serpentine soil profiles; Udepts in Oeyama, Japan, and Udepts and Udox in Kinabalu, Malaysia. Recent statistical analyses on the isotopic compositions of oceanic, arc, and continental basalts have revealed that the Earth's mantle is broadly divided into eastern and western hemispheres. The present study aimed to characterize the isotopically defined east–west geochemical hemispheres using trace-element concentrations. Basalt data with Rb, Sr, Nd, Sm, Pb, Th, and U in addition to the isotopic ratios 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd, 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb were selected mostly from the GEOROC and PetDB databases. A total of 4787 samples were used to investigate the global geochemical variations. The results show that the wide trace-element variations are broadly explained by the melting of melt-metasomatized and fluid-metasomatized mantle sources. The larger amount of the fluid component derived from subducted plates in the eastern hemisphere than that in the western hemisphere is inferred from the basalts. These characteristics support the hypothesis that focused subduction towards the supercontinent created the mantle geochemical hemispheres.

Serpentine soils contain high levels of geogenic Cr and Ni, which may pose potential risks to the environment due to the increase of bioavailability of the metals during soil weathering. This study determined the lability of Cr and Ni by sequential selective extraction (SSE) and illustrated its relationships to mineral composition and physicochemical properties of serpentine soils for eight pedons along a climate gradient including temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions in Austria, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia. Although the mineral origin of Cr was different from that of Ni, Cr significantly accompanied Ni in various climates. Geochemical Cr and Ni fractions (by SSE) followed the order: residual (F4) > Fe/Mn oxide (F2) > organic matter (F3) > acid soluble (F1). Soil properties associated with changes in climate/weathering state, including pH, organic carbon, exchangeable Ca/Mg, and dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate extractable Fe, correlated with all fractions of Cr and Ni. Individual and the sum of all labile pools (∑F1–F3) of Ni were much higher than those of Cr in all pedons. Cr and Ni associated with Fe/Mn oxides (F2) was higher in the tropical soils than in the temperate soils, while Cr and Ni associated with organic matter (F3) was higher in the temperate soils than in the tropical soils along this gradient. Our results demonstrate that Cr and Ni are gradually transformed into labile pools in the soils as chemical weathering progresses from temperate to tropical climate.

The shape of a subducting slab varies as a function of trench motion. Two end-members of subduction modes are geodynamically possible: roll-back mode underneath neighboring plates and roll-over mode underneath the plate itself. Whereas most of major slabs seem to roll back while the Pacific plate shows a slab piling behavior down to ∼1,000 km depth under the Mariana trench, no clear evidence of slab roll-over in nature has been reported so far. Here we show a possible roll-over slab beneath the Caroline microplate, revealed from its three-dimensional seismic velocity structure derived by analyzing teleseismic reverberating SS phases. We suggest that slab roll-over is driven by at least two factors: 1) the overall buoyancy and fragility of the Caroline microplate at the surface, induced by a thin hot mantle plume that rises from depths ≥800 km; and 2) the pushing force of the Pacific plate acting on the trailing edge of the Caroline plate.

Artificial radionuclides including radiocesium (134Cs and 137Cs) and radiosilver (110mAg) were released into the environment following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident in March 2011. These particle-bound substances deposited on soils of north-eastern Japan, located predominantly within a ∼3000 km2 radioactive fallout plume and drained by several coastal rivers to the Pacific Ocean. The current dataset (Evrard et al., 2021), which can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.928594, compiles gamma-emitting artificial radionuclide activities measured in 782 sediment samples collected from 27 to 71 locations across catchments draining ∼6450 km2 during 16 fieldwork campaigns. These campaigns were conducted in Japan between November 2011 and November 2020 in river catchments draining the main radioactive plume. This database may be useful to evaluate and anticipate the post-accidental redistribution of radionuclides in the environment and for the spatial validation of models simulating the transfer of radiocesium across continental landscapes.

Phytoavailable K in soil is a key to control the transfer factor of radiocesium from soil to brown rice. The transfer factors were determined for paddy fields cultivated in 2017 and 2018 under different K fertilization regimes in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Two phytoavailable forms of K, the exchangeable and nonexchangeable K contents were investigated for the surface soil sampled after the transplanting and fertilization as well as after harvest of rice in the same paddy fields. The exchangeable K content largely decreased from after transplanting and fertilization to after harvest, and the exchangeable K of the soil after harvest was negatively correlated with the transfer factor (rs = −0.70, p 50 mg K2O 100 g−1 indicated a considerably low transfer factor, even if exchangeable K deficient. Thus, via our field-scale experiments, we concluded that the criterion nonexchangeable K > 50 mg K2O 100 g−1 can be used as another threshold for use along with that of exchangeable K to differentiate soil with a low radiocesium transfer rate from exchangeable K deficient soil.

Aeolian dust coming from arid regions of inland China supplies mineral resources to Japanese Islands. While annual deposition rate is as small as 5~10 g m-2 yr-1, total amount of deposition since the last glacial period can form soil layers with several meters depths. We focused on the mineral fertilization effect of aeolian dust on terrestrial ecosystems in Japan. The deposition and incorporation of dust-derived micaceous mineral into soil through time is our special interest because this mineral has an exceptionally higher ability to retain radiocesium than the others, thereby contributing to reduce soil-to-plant transfer of radiocesium after the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power Plant accident. However, little study has focused on aeolian dust as a controlling factor of radiocesium dynamics in soils. In this study, peat-core samples collected from the Kamiyoshi (KMY) basin in Kyoto, Japan was used to obtain the aeolian dust that had been deposited on land during the last glacial period. The KMY core with depth from 9.40 to 8.20 m (corresponding to 75 ka to 68 ka) was horizontally divided into 21 portions. The subdivided samples were treated with H2O2 to decompose organic matters and then size-fractionated to obtain 18O value. We found that the 18O values of 16.8±0.3‰, quite similar to those of loess or aeolian dust previously reported. All these properties strongly indicate the origin of the -2 yr-1 to 15.7 g m-2 yr-1 and highly associated with paleoclimate estimated by the pollen record. Namely, the higher aeolian dust flux was observed at colder and drier paleoclimate as indicated by the higher proportion of pinaceous conifer pollen. We conclude that associative analysis of mineral and pollen record in the peat-core can be a promising method to trace the long term deposition pattern of aeolian dust in terrestrial ecosystems in Japan.

Summary:. Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC) in the scalp is a rare congenital malformation. The treatment for ACC with large defects involving the scalp, bone, and the dura is challenging. Local debridement of necrotic tissue is important to prevent lethal complications such as infection and meningitis. However, debridement has the risk of damaging the sagittal sinus or the dura. Recent developments in ultra-high-frequency ultrasound(US) systems provide frequencies of 70 MHz and capability resolution as fine as 30 μm, which could allow precise imaging of small and thin anatomical structures. The study aimed to describe the methods of precise evaluation of the defect in the scalp and safe debridement using ultra-high-frequency US. This is the first report on direct observation of a newborn’s brain using ultra-high-frequency US. The boy was delivered spontaneously with a large defect of the scalp and bone. After 14 days, due to signs of infection, local debridement was performed carefully under ultra-high-frequency US-based evaluation. The dura, the sagittal sinus, and the small anatomical structures such as arachnoid granulations could be observed. Because the brain herniation gradually aggravated, dural reconstruction using fascia lata and scalp reconstruction using transposition flap was performed. Finally, good skin coverage over the defects was obtained. This method minimizes the risk of damaging the sagittal sinus and the brain parenchyma, which may cause fatal complications. Although further clinical investigations will be required to confirm its efficacy, ultra-high-frequency US has the potential to be a useful device for ACC treatment.

Secondary mineral distributions in soils from Kalimantan, Indonesia, were investigated to examine the effects of the parent materials and climate at different elevations on the distributions. B horizon soils were sampled at 60 sites on gentle slopes at different elevations (20–1700 m altitude). Each major parent material (sedimentary, felsic, and intermediate to mafic) was represented at different elevations. The soil samples were classified from their total elemental compositions using cluster analysis. Secondary minerals were measured by X-ray diffraction and selective extractions. The samples were divided into ferric (high Fe contents), K&Mg (high K, Mg, and Si), and silicic (high Si) groups. The ferric soils were derived from mafic parent materials, whereas the others were derived from felsic or sedimentary parent materials. The K&Mg soils had higher total base contents (suggesting primary minerals) and were less weathered than the silicic soils. Secondary minerals in the ferric soils were characterized by high contents of Fe oxides and gibbsite. The K&Mg and silicic soils had similar secondary mineral (kaolinite and vermiculite) contents, but more mica was found in the former. Only the silicic group soils had secondary mineral contents that changed as the elevation changed (the kaolinite content increased and the vermiculite and poorly crystalline Al and Fe contents decreased as the elevation decreased). Higher temperatures at lower elevations may cause minerals to be altered more. Secondary mineral distributions were primarily controlled by the parent material (mafic or felsic/sedimentary) and, secondarily by the climate, which varied with elevation.

Land use intensity in the Cameroon plateaus, where Ferralsols and the associated highly weathered soils are dominant, has been steadily increasing, so that soil fertility status and its controlling factors on these plateaus should be elucidated to establish long-term land management strategies. Although it is known that Ferralsols have small, but variable CEC values, it has not been fully determined which clay components are the main source of CEC clay in Ferralsols. Here, soils in three Cameroon plateau regions of different altitude (the lower South Cameroon (SC) Plateau with an altitude of 300–600 m, SC L ; the upper SC Plateau with an altitude of 600–900 m, SC H ; and the Adamawa Plateau with an altitude above 900 m, ADM) were collected, and their physicochemical and mineralogical properties were investigated. The relative abundance of illitic minerals, which are a minor but the most promising source of CEC clay in Ferralsols, was determined by using three indicators: the relative abundances of 1.0 nm-thick structures as represented by XRD peak intensity (XRD 1.0 nm ), structural K in illitic minerals as represented by clay-K content, and the quantity of intermediate interlayer sites between illite and vermiculite structures (i.e., frayed edge sites) as represented by the radiocesium interception potential (RIP). The relative abundances of two low-activity clay components, kaolinite and gibbsite, were determined by differential thermal analysis, and the degree of Al-substitution in goethite was determined by differential x-ray diffraction analysis. All three quantitative indicators for illitic minerals decreased along the altitude gradient, SC L > SC H > ADM, and were positively correlated with CEC clay . While kaolinite also showed a decreasing trend at higher altitude, it did not show any significant correlation with CEC clay . In contrast to the decrease in these Si-bearing minerals, gibbsite and Al-substituted goethite increased along the same altitude gradient. These associative changes strongly indicate that illitic minerals were the clay component largely controlling CEC clay and that de-silication or aluminization may proceed at higher altitude or on stable surfaces with older formation ages in the Cameroon plateau regions. Thus, mineralogical properties well explained the distribution of Ferralsols; they were marginal in the SC L region, while those with relatively high CEC clay were dominant in the SC H region and those with lower CEC clay were dominant in the ADM region.

The effects of water on subduction dynamics, e.g., plate migration rate, slab geometry, stress field, and back-arc spreading, are investigated by using a 2-D self-consistent model for lithosphere subduction and whole mantle convection. We solve water transportation coupled with hydrous mineral phase changes. Mantle flows and water transportation are interactive through constitutive and state equations for hydrous rocks. Our model has successfully reproduced the water distribution in a mantle wedge and along the slab with sufficient resolution comparable to that of previous models that focus on the mantle wedge structure. As a result, low density owing to hydration reduces subduction rates, back-arc spreading, and slab stagnation on the phase boundary at 660-km depth, whereas low viscosity owing to hydration enhances rapid subduction, trench migration, and slab stagnation. We attribute these results to mechanisms that cause the hydrous buoyancy of subducting plates to reduce the slab pull force and the accompanying tensile stress on overlying lithosphere. In addition, hydrous weakening diminishes the mechanical coupling of the subducted slab with the wedge mantle and overriding lithosphere. Thus, water is capable of generating two opposite situations in the stress field of the overlying lithosphere and the subduction rate. Water is therefore expected to be an important mechanism for generating broad styles of the subduction structure and kinematics, as observed in actual subduction zones such as Tonga and Mariana. Such observed variation in the subduction mode can be caused by variation in buoyancy corresponding to the water content from relatively dry to several thousands of parts per million for the wedge mantle and slab surface, whereas the extremely buoyant case does not appear to occur in nature. Water in the mantle is thus key to better understand the whole-mantle-scale slab dynamics as well as island arc volcanic processes.
