Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú; Perú Resumen: El escrito analiza aspectos de la dinámica, evolución y desafíos de las religiosas en América Latina. Analiza la evolución numérica las religiosas entre 1970-2017 y las compara tanto con otras regiones como con los sacerdotes. Se identifican tres patrones, todos ellos concluyen con cifras decrecientes a principios del presente milenio. El análisis se basa en una base de datos construida a partir del Anuario Estadístico de la Iglesia. Se analiza así mismo el espacio social que han ocupado las religiosas en los países latinoamericanos a lo largo del tiempo; y la construcción de su identidad social y eclesial. Finalmente, se abordan tres aspectos que ayudan a comprender su actual crisis: primero, la persistente cultura clerical que permea la dinámica de la Iglesia; segundo, las disputas suscitadas en torno a las decisiones sobre sus obras, expresiones del pasado pero no de su presente; y, tercero, la construcción de su identidad actual a través del complejo proceso de encontrar inspiración en la confrontación de sus fuentes fundacionales con los enfoques teológicos pastorales actuales, como los enmarcados en las teologías feministas. El eje que atraviesa el escrito es encontrar claves analíticas que permitan comprender la crisis que están atravesando actualmente las religiosas. Abstract: The writing analyzes trends in the life and ministry of women in Latin America. It provides a quantitative sketch identifying religious sisters’trends from 1970 to 2017and compares them both with other regions and with Latin American priests.It exams three patterns, all of them concluding with declining numbers at the beginning of the 2000s.The analysis is grounded on a database that was built using the Statistical Yearbook of the Church. The article also examines the social space women religious have occupied in the Latin American countries over time; the construction of their social and ecclesial identity, and their relationship with Catholic consecrated men. Finally,itaddressestheir current challenges deepeningin threeissuesthat account for their crisis:first, the persistent clerical culture that permeates the Church ́s dynamics;second, the disputes stirreduparound decisions on their works, expressions of thepast but not of their present; and,third, the building of their present identity through the complex process of finding inspiration in the confrontation of their foundational sources with present pastoral theological approaches, as those framed within feminist theologies. Unearthing clues to better understanding the Latin American sisters’ crisis is a thread that runs throughout theanalysis.

espanolEl escrito aporta una caracterizacion global de las congregaciones religiosas femeninas y masculinas presentes actualmente en Argentina. Sobre la base de un modelo historico y otro organizacional, analiza la evolucion del numero de congregaciones, de religiosos/as, y de su peso en comparacion con otros especialistas celibes del campo catolico. Se adentra asimismo en aspectos vinculados a su origen, a sus estructuras, a su presencia institucional y al espacio social que han ido ocupando. El texto propone hipotesis para comprender la situacion actual del colectivo en estudio en Argentina. EnglishThe article provides a global characterization of female and male religious congregations/orders currently present in Argentina. Based on historical and organizational models, it analyses the growth in the number of congregations, its members and their weight compared to other celibate specialists in the Argentinean Catholic field. The article also focuses on issues related to their origin, their structures, their type of presence, and the social space they have been occupying. The text proposes hypotheses to understand the current situation of religious orders in Argentina.

This chapter examines how the capability approach is being integrated into the policies and priorities of the local government of the federal city of Buenos Aires in Argentina. It first considers three specific insights of the capability approach that are particularly relevant for urban integration policies: multidimensional and multisectoral perspective on policy; an institutionally integrated vision of wellbeing; and agency focus. It then explores each of these insights in the context of urban inequality reduction policies in Buenos Aires. In particular, it analyses the dynamic interaction between youth employment and education in informal settlements, and territorial characteristics; the role of civil society organisations in the dynamics of capability expansion in informal settlements; and the role of culture and religion in promoting agency and capability expansion. The chapter concludes with a summary of some of the features of ‘capability-promoting policy’ in the fragmented and unequal context of the Latin American city.

Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina Resumen: El trabajo analiza algunas expresiones de la fe de creyentes en sectores marginados, evidenciando aspectos que expresan dimensiones de una religión vivida. Se indaga una de las prácticas religiosas ampliamente difundidas en estos sectores, la de efectuar una “promesa” a una figura religiosa; se la vincula con otras tres expresiones de fe: la de “sacralizar” el espacio doméstico a través de la presencia de altares, las devociones a figuras religiosas y la “experiencia” del milagro. Los datos que sustentan el análisis provienen de dos fuentes: 1. una encuesta efectuada en el 2014 a una muestra representativa de residentes en villas de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires; 2. entrevistas en profundidad realizadas en el 2011-12 a mujeres residentes en un barrio carenciado, que permitieron ahondar en narrativas de “milagros” de mujeres pobres, en las expresiones cotidianas de su fe y en el sentido de sus devociones y promesas. Estas entrevistas sustentan el análisis de tipo fenomenológico que se hace de la espiritualidad subyacente alimentada por esas prácticas. El trabajo argumenta que la religiosidad popular es un espacio privilegiado para captar dimensiones “extra-religiosas- que remiten a una categoría transversal a “lo religioso”: la espiritualidad y que se apoya en las dimensiones cosmológicas y holísticas presentes en la matriz de sentidos. Abstract: The aim of this article is to asses some of the expressions of faith of slums believers that account for a ‘lived religion’. It asses a widely widespread religious practice in marginal settlements: making a ‘promise’ to a religious figure. A practice linked to three other expressions of religious faith also analyzed: 1.To consecrate home through shrines, 2. The devotion of religious figures, and 3.The miracle experience. The data that supports the analysis comes from two sources: 1. A questionnaire applied in 2014 to a representative sample of 400 inhabitants of Buenos Aires slums; 2. In-depth interviews applied in 2011-12 to women living in poor settlements. These interviews enable us to delve into the poor women´s ‘miracles’ storytelling, in their daily expressions of faith, and the meaning of their devotions and promises. These interviews support the phenomenological analysis made of the underlying spirituality fed by such practices. The article discusses a theoretical framework to the spirituality category, by linking it to the cosmological and holistic dimensions present in popular religiosity expressions.

The book presents a meticulous study of the intricate process by which some Catholics in the United States were “officially” recognized as saints of the country. It presents the historical and socio-religious contexts that accompanied the complex canonization process of Elizabeth Seton, Frances Cabrini, Katharine Drexel and John Neumann; as well as those of Kateri Tekakwitha, Rose Philippine Duchesne, Junípero Serra, among others. The questions that guide the book are: What motivated Catholics in the United States to seek to have the Vatican recognize some of its faithful as "holy"? What fueled the need for those figures? How did that need change over time and why? How and why did the attributes highlighted in the figures proposed for the arduous process challenge North American religious culture? Why did some postulations succeed and others not? El libro presenta los resultados de un minucioso estudio sobre el intrincado proceso por el cual algunos católicos de Estados Unidos pasaron a ser “oficialmente” reconocidos como santos del país. Presenta los contextos históricos y socio-religiosos que acompañaron el complejo proceso de canonización de Elizabeth Seton, Frances Cabrini, Katharine Drexel y John Neumann; así como los de Kateri Tekakwitha, Rose Philippine Duchesne, Junípero Serra, entre otros. Las preguntas que guían el libro son: ¿Qué motivó a los católicos de Estados Unidos a buscar que el Vaticano reconociera como “santo” a algunos de sus fieles? ¿Qué alimentó la necesidad de tener esas figuras? ¿Cómo esa necesidad fue cambiando de sentido con el tiempo y por qué? ¿Cómo y por qué los atributos destacados en las figuras propuestas para el arduo proceso que implica buscar la canonización, interpelaban la cultura religiosa norteamericana? ¿Por qué algunas postulaciones prosperaron y otras no? Instituto de Investigaciones; Argentina Resumen: Se presentan los resultados de un estudio de caso en dos escuelas parroquiales de barrios precarios de Buenos Aires cuyo objetivo fue analizar la interrelación entre segregación residencial, segmentación educativa e inclusión socioeducativa. Los datos se relevaron a través de un cuestionario sobre el perfil sociodemográfico y otro sobre el axiológico de los alumnos; se recurrió asimismo a entrevistas a directivos y a los proyectos educativos de ambas escuelas. El análisis de los datos evidenció vulnerabilidad socioeconómica de los alumnos agravada por habitar en espacios segregados de la ciudad y la participación en circuitos escolares de baja calidad. Se muestra asimismo que las visiones, motivaciones y propuestas educativas de ambas escuelas constituyen un capital cultural muy relevante para los estudiantes quienes, según los datos del cuestionario axiológico, manifiestan dos dimensiones descendidas: reconocimiento social y liderazgo. Se concluye en la necesidad de un ajuste curricular situado y focalizado en los alumnos. Abstract: The article presents result of a case study conducted in two parochial schools of Buenos Aires poor neighborhoods. The aim was to analyze the relationship between residential segregation, educational fragmentation, and socio-educational inclusion Two questionnaires and several interviews provided data for the study. From the sociodemographic profile of students there is evidence of social and economic vulnerability, worsened by living in segregated spaces, and the participation in low quality school segments. The axiological profile evidences two-dimensional very low: recognition and social leadership. Visions, motivations and educational proposals are important spiritual and cultural capital of both schools. From this case study we conclude on the need of a redesigned curriculum situated and focused on the territory.

Social research has recently demonstrated renewed interest in the study of residential segregation in Latin America. In large part, this is the result of the increase in the adverse social effects of spatial segregation during the 1990s. There is a certain consensus regarding the role of the region’s neoliberal policies in influencing this trend. Furthermore, although it is controversial, some studies have indicated that levels of segregation are on the rise (Arriagada and Rodriguez, 2003).
