The forty papers collected here honor one of the great scientists of our time--John Archibald Wheeler. In this volume are gathered the six issues of the journal Foundations of Physics (February through July 1986) that celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday. Enlivened by Professor Wheeler's celebrated drawings, the book captures and illuminates his many contributions to physics, including his discovery of the scattering matrix and his elucidation, with Niels Bohr, of the mechanism of nuclear fission, his many contributions to Einstein's theory of gravity (for instance, the black hole), his deep insights into quantum theory and measurement (the elementary quantum phenomenon), and his efforts to explain the origins of the quantum postulate and quantum gravity (the meaning circuit and the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation). The majority of the papers reflect and build on Professor Wheeler's revolutionary ideas. Many scientists are convinced that his insights into the foundation of modern-day physics will induce a profound change in our perception of the universe. This book will appeal to scientists and philosophers who wish to look at one man's rendering of the "big picture" through the eyes of his colleagues. A study is made of the dominant terms of an earlier model-based formula describing the dispersion energy of axially symmetric interacting molecules. The existence of mixed-pole eighth-order terms is noted.

The ground-state dispersion energy of a pair of axially symmetric molecules is calculated, to arbitrary order in the inverse intermolecular separation, on the basis of London's anisotropic oscillator model.

With the aid of a model representing each molecule as a set of semi‐isotropic dipole oscillators, the London‐van der Waals interaction energy of a pair of unexcited axially symmetric molecules is calculated, in the second order of perturbation theory, as an infinite series in negative powers of the intermolecular separation.

In order to attempt a global description of gravitation, one has to consider the entire cosmos, rather than infinitesimal space—time regions. Unfortunately, our experience from nongravitational physics is in the first instance of no use in this approach, as the physics in question has a local, field-theoretical, character. We are left with only one possibility : Start with a global formulation of gravitational law, and afterwards attempt to relate it to local, gravitational as well as nongravitational, physics.
