This article explores the place of storytelling and magic in immigration policing in the United Kingdom. ‘Immigration stories’ are important for grasping the role of narratives in migration policing. While aimed at rendering a complex social world legible, this form of knowledge reveals its limitations. Rather than producing a cognitive template to make sense of a boundless world, immigration enforcement practices show illegibility as a hallmark of the state. The work of immigration officers is dominated by hazardous and arbitrary practices and rules⸻which I call ‘immigration magic’⸻which often leave them devoid of power and control. As an exercise in southernising border criminology, I interrogate the received division of labour in theorising the state in the south and north, on the one hand, and state and society on the other. In doing so, I seek to lay this northern policing bureaucracy open to underexplored dimensions and angles, as frontline staff are tasked with re-spatialising state power.

In this special issue, we explore the limits of existing theories for understanding migration governance from a Southern perspective and what the potential for rethinking border controls and their study, such as alternative epistemological and methodological approaches, might engender. We invited contributions to imagine what a ‘Southern perspective’ on the field of border criminologies would look like. In other words, what does it entail to study and theorise border control from the South? We organised a panel at the European Society of Criminology in September 2021 and then invited further authors. We sought to engage multiple disciplinary traditions and diverse case studies that speak to the various disciplinary perspectives and geopolitical dimensions of bordering. Many of the authors in this special issue are early career researchers who, through engaging with postcolonial theory and decolonial approaches, are fostering novel perspectives within border criminologies. Collectively, the articles bring together the different geopolitical, sociocultural and economic ways in which borders in the Global South are imagined, constructed, negotiated and reconstructed. The articles offer a wide range of epistemological and methodological insights for border criminologies to engage with, shifting our understanding from Northern perspectives.

Rationale and Objectives To evaluate associations between longitudinal changes of quantitative CT parameters and spirometry in patients with fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Materials and Methods Serial CT images and spirometric data were retrospectively collected in a group of 25 fibrotic HP patients. Quantitative CT analysis included histogram parameters (median, interquartile range, skewness, and kurtosis) and a pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN)-based textural analysis, aimed at quantifying the extent of consolidation (C), fibrosis (F), ground-glass opacity (GGO), low attenuation areas (LAA) and healthy tissue (H). Results At baseline, FVC was 61(44-70) %pred. The median follow-up period was 1.4(0.8-3.2) years, with 3(2-4) visits per patient. Over the study, 8 patients (32%) showed a FVC decline of more than 5%, a significant worsening of all histogram parameters (p≤0.015) and an increased extent of fibrosis via CNN (p=0.038). On histogram analysis, decreased skewness and kurtosis were the parameters most strongly associated with worsened FVC (respectively, r2=0.63 and r2=0.54, p

Micro-computed tomography (µCT)-based imaging plays a key role in monitoring disease progression and response to candidate drugs in various animal models of human disease, but manual image processing is still highly time-consuming and prone to operator bias. Focusing on an established mouse model of bleomycin (BLM)-induced lung fibrosis we document, here, the ability of a fully automated deep-learning (DL)-based model to improve and speed-up lung segmentation and the precise measurement of morphological and functional biomarkers in both the whole lung and in individual lobes. µCT-DL whose results were overall highly consistent with those of more conventional, especially histological, analyses, allowed to cut down by approximately 45-fold the time required to analyze the entire dataset and to longitudinally follow fibrosis evolution and response to the human-use-approved drug Nintedanib, using both inspiratory and expiratory μCT. Particularly significant advantages of this µCT-DL approach, are: (i) its reduced experimental variability, due to the fact that each animal acts as its own control and the measured, operator bias-free biomarkers can be quantitatively compared across experiments; (ii) its ability to monitor longitudinally the spatial distribution of fibrotic lesions, thus eliminating potential confounding effects associated with the more severe fibrosis observed in the apical region of the left lung and the compensatory effects taking place in the right lung; (iii) the animal sparing afforded by its non-invasive nature and high reliability; and (iv) the fact that it can be integrated into different drug discovery pipelines with a substantial increase in both the speed and robustness of the evaluation of new candidate drugs. The µCT-DL approach thus lends itself as a powerful new tool for the precision preclinical monitoring of BLM-induced lung fibrosis and other disease models as well. Its ease of operation and use of standard imaging instrumentation make it easily transferable to other laboratories and to other experimental settings, including clinical diagnostic applications.

We construct a flexible dynamic linear model for the analysis and prediction of multivariate time series, assuming a two-piece normal initial distribution for the state vector. We derive a novel Kalman filter for this model, obtaining a two components mixture as predictive and filtering distributions. In order to estimate the covariance of the error sequences, we develop a Gibbs-sampling algorithm to perform Bayesian inference. The proposed approach is validated and compared with a Gaussian dynamic linear model in simulations and on a real data set.

Experimental in-vivo animal models are key tools to investigate the pathogenesis of lung disease and to discover new therapeutics. Histopathological and biochemical investigations of explanted lung tissue are currently considered the gold standard, but they provide space-localized information and are not amenable to longitudinal studies in individual animals. Here, we present an imaging procedure that uses micro-CT to extract morpho-functional indicators of lung pathology in a murine model of lung fibrosis. We quantified the decrease of lung ventilation and measured the antifibrotic effect of Nintedanib. A robust structure-function relationship was revealed by cumulative data correlating micro-CT with histomorphometric endpoints. The results highlight the potential of in-vivo micro-CT biomarkers as novel tools to monitor the progression of inflammatory and fibrotic lung disease and to shed light on the mechanism of action of candidate drugs. Our platform is also expected to streamline translation from preclinical studies to human patients.

Chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (cHP) is a heterogeneous condition, where both small airway involvement and fibrosis may simultaneously occur. Computer-aided analysis of CT lung imaging is increasingly used to improve tissue characterization in interstitial lung diseases (ILD), quantifying disease extension, and progression. We aimed to quantify via a convolutional neural network (CNN) method the extent of different pathological classes in cHP, and to determine their correlation to pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and mosaic attenuation pattern.The extension of six textural features, including consolidation (C), ground glass opacity (GGO), fibrosis (F), low attenuation areas (LAA), reticulation (R) and healthy regions (H), was quantified in 27 cHP patients (age: 56 ± 11.5 years, forced vital capacity [FVC]% = 57 ± 17) acquired at full-inspiration via HRCT. Each class extent was correlated to PFTs and to mosaic attenuation pattern.H showed a positive correlation with FVC%, FEV1% (forced expiratory volume), total lung capacity%, and diffusion of carbon monoxide (DLCO)% (r = 0.74, r = 0.78, r = 0.73, and r = 0.60, respectively, p0.001). GGO, R and C negatively correlated with FVC% and FEV1% with the highest correlations found for R (r = -0.44, and r = -0.46 respectively, p0.05); F negatively correlated with DLCO% (r = -0.42, p0.05). Patients with mosaic attenuation pattern had significantly more H (p = 0.04) and lower R (p = 0.02) and C (p = 0.0009) areas, and more preserved lung function indices (higher FVC%; p = 0.04 and DLCO%; p = 0.05), but did not show more air trapping in lung function tests.CNN quantification of pathological tissue extent in cHP improves its characterization and shows correlation with PFTs. LAA can be overestimated by visual, qualitative CT assessment and mosaic attenuation pattern areas in cHP represents patchy ILD rather than small-airways disease.

Background A higher (> 10 cmH2O) positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is commonly used in patients with moderate to severe hypoxemia due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). However, compliance more commonly decreases when PEEP is increased from 10 to 15 cmH2O, as for lung hyperinflation. In this study, we directly measured lung recruitment and hyperinflation induced by increasing PEEP from 10 to 15 cmH2O in mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19. Methods Twenty mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19 underwent a lung computed tomography (CT) at 10 and 15 cmH2O of airway pressure. Gas exchange and compliance were then measured with 10 and 15 cmH2O of PEEP. Recruitment was computed as the decrease of the non-aerated lung volume (density above − 100 HU) and hyperinflation as the increase of the over-aerated lung volume (density below − 900 HU). If recruitment was larger than hyperinflation, the net morphological response was “recruitment”; otherwise, it was “hyperinflation”. Results With 10 cmH2O of PEEP, the median (Q1-Q3) arterial tension to the inspiratory fraction of oxygen (PaO2:FiO2) was 146 (107–197) mmHg. The net morphological response to increasing PEEP was recruitment in nine (45%) patients and hyperinflation in eleven (55%). Oxygenation improved in twelve (60%) patients, but compliance in only three (15%). Compliance with 10 cmH2O of PEEP ≤ 45 cmH2O/ml predicted net recruitment in response to increasing PEEP with a positive predictive value of 0.89 (95%-confidence intervals: 0.49-1.00) and a negative predictive value of 0.91 (0.59-1.00). Conclusions The morphological response to a higher PEEP is largely variable in patients with COVID-19, ranging from net recruitment (in half of the patients) to net hyperinflation (in the other half). Baseline compliance may help to predict the individual response to increasing PEEP.

The protozoan Plasmodium falciparum is the main aetiological agent of tropical malaria. Characteristic of the phylum is the presence of a plastid-like organelle which hosts several homologs of plant proteins, including a ferredoxin (PfFd) and its NADPH-dependent reductase (PfFNR). The PfFNR/PfFd redox system is essential for the parasite, while mammals share no homologous proteins, making the enzyme an attractive target for novel and much needed antimalarial drugs. Based on previous findings, three chemically reactive residues important for PfFNR activity were identified: namely, the active-site Cys99, responsible for hydride transfer; Cys284, whose oxidation leads to an inactive dimeric form of the protein; and His286, which is involved in NADPH binding. These amino acid residues were probed by several residue-specific reagents and the two cysteines were shown to be promising targets for covalent inhibition. The quantitative and qualitative description of the reactivity of few compounds, including a repurposed drug, set the bases for the development of more potent and specific antimalarial leads. This article reassesses the relationship between state authority and violence in the context of border controls. Drawing on empirical research conducted with immigration and police officers in the UK, I show that the use of force in this context give rise to distinctively complex ethical questions which shape institutional and individual practices, and is entangled with the legally and politically fragile authority wielded by frontline staff. Faced with a morally, socially and politically controversial mandate, these officers devise a range of strategies to either minimize or conceal the use of violence. In doing so, they sometimes fall into oxymorons and euphemisms that at once evidence the shady line between coercion and consent, and shed light on the some of the profound moral dilemmas they encounter in doing border work. These dilemmas, I conclude, speak of broader challenges to the exercise of state coercive power, and the negotiated, contingent and provisional nature of state authority in a globalized, postcolonial and profoundly unequal world. I also argue for the social and intellectual urge to integrate the study of immigration enforcement in contemporary debates of state penality.

This afterword outlines the complexities that the privatisation of border controls poses in relation to state sovereignty, as richly developed throughout this book, and reflects on how studying such processes of privatisation might shed new light on our understanding of the nature of contemporary state sovereignty and governance. In charting and subjecting to critical scrutiny the many practices through which state power is outsourced, shared, and abdicated, this volume sheds as much light on the plurality of actors involved in the exercise of state power as on the state itself. The relationship between privatisation and state sovereignty is made much more complex when the question of border controls is added to the mix, because this exposes the distinct moral, political, and legal dilemmas of state power in a transnational world order. Privatisation has been interpreted as an irregularity and a deviation from a normative idea of the state as the main provider of security. Such analytical frames, this chapter suggests, have stymied theories and concepts that better reflect contemporary dynamics and flows of power, and have often served imperialist projects. Examining these practices in all their complexities and diversity, and laying them open to empirical and normative scrutiny, is essential for rethinking the place and function of the state in society.

Liberal theory has long fetishized state law as a fortress against disorder, anarchy, and private violence. To prevent violence writ large, it advocated, the nation-state should be endowed with its monopoly, as the impartial and rational guardian of civilization and social peace. Yet, as critics suggest, the normative binary of law/violence and the legal purity of the state is empirically untenable and, as such, remains an ideological construct sustained and perpetuated through law and its fictions. In this paper, I revisit these debates to reflect on legal fictions in the context of migration policing. I draw on ethnographic research I conducted with immigration and police officers in the UK. Amid the growing economies of illegality that rely on migrant labour which these officers are in charge of suppressing, their everyday work reveals spaces of legal murkiness and ambiguity. The paper explores the paradoxes, dilemmas and contradictions that such legal ambiguity gives rise to and their implications for state sovereignty.

Morbidity is one of the key aspects for assessing populations’ well-being. In particular, chronic diseases negatively affect the quality of life in the old age and the risk that more years added to lives are years of disability and illness. Novel analysis, interventions and policies are required to understand and potentially mitigate this issue. In this article, we focus on investigating whether in Italy the compression of morbidity is in act in the recent years, parallely to an increase of life expectancy. Our analysis rely on large repeated cross-sectional data from the national surveillance system passi, providing deep insights on the evolution of morbidity together with other socio-demographical variables. In addition, we investigate differences in morbidity across subgroups, focusing on disparities by gender, level of education and economic difficulties, and assessing the evolution of these differences across the period 2013–2019.

BACKGROUND Preoperative assessment is crucial to prevent the risk of complications of surgical operations and is usually focused on functional capacity. The increasing availability of wearable devices (smartwatches, trackers, rings, etc) can provide less intrusive assessment methods, reduce costs, and improve accuracy. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to present and evaluate the possibility of using commercial smartwatch data, such as those retrieved from the Fitbit Inspire 2 device, to assess functional capacity before elective surgery and correlate such data with the current gold standard measure, the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) distance. METHODS During the hospital visit, patients were evaluated in terms of functional capacity using the 6MWT. Patients were asked to wear the Fitbit Inspire 2 for 7 days (with flexibility of –2 to +2 days) after the hospital visit, before their surgical operation. Resting heart rate and daily steps data were retrieved directly from the smartwatch. Feature engineering techniques allowed the extraction of heart rate over steps (HROS) and a modified version of Non-Exercise Testing Cardiorespiratory Fitness. All measures were correlated with 6MWT. RESULTS In total, 31 patients were enrolled in the study (n=22, 71% men; n=9, 29% women; mean age 76.06, SD 4.75 years). Data were collected between June 2021 and May 2022. The parameter that correlated best with the 6MWT was the Non-Exercise Testing Cardiorespiratory Fitness index (r=0.68; Pr=−0.39 (P=.03), even if some patients did not wear the device at night. The correlation of the 6MWT distance with the HROS evaluated at 1% quantile was significant, with Pearson coefficient of −0.39 (P=.04). Fitbit step count had a fair correlation of 0.59 with 6MWT (P CONCLUSIONS Our study is a promising starting point for the adoption of wearable technology in the evaluation of functional capacity of patients, which was strongly correlated with the gold standard. The study also identified limitations in the availability of metrics, variability of devices, accuracy and quality of data, and accessibility as crucial areas of focus for future studies.

The study of the hydraulic factories (mills, forges, trip hammers, etc.) of the Valle Sabbia, conducted by a University of Brescia research group, within the "Resilient Valleys" project (funded by the Cariplo Foundation), led to the definition of a protocol or guidelines with the ambition of identifying shared and adequate codes of practice to guarantee the correct recovery of this heritage. The object of the survey are artefacts located in functional positions for production activities, today often isolated and not very accessible. The architectural structure and construction features make them particularly vulnerable to deterioration, moreso than other types of artefacts. What remains of this building heritage is much closer to the conditions of a ruin which, if recovered or simply maintained, could very effectively convey some of the most characteristic features of local economic history. To conserve and maintain this heritage, operational indications and good practice suggestions are proposed, useful in interventions on buildings and hydraulic artefacts. There is neither a compendium with recipes to follow step by step nor even exemplary models, but rather a critical path method that starts from the direct and physical knowledge of the heritage, to arrive at the timely and most suitable conservation intervention. Method suggestions are proposed, which aim to help the owners, users or managers of these architectures, in choosing, within a scenario of traditional and innovative construction techniques available, the most suitable and correct ones to guarantee respect for the buildings’ and hydraulic works’ characteristics, their constructive, morphological, technological, material peculiarities and, therefore, to monitor and/or solve problems of decay and instability. Ample space is also dedicated to the planned conservation process, in which enhancement will contribute to respecting the material and intellectual integrity of the ruin.

Analysis of the PSA pre-trial risk assessments algorithms for predictive bias (by race, sex, age etc) and development of open source methods to remove such biases and preserving accuracy

We report the implemented architecture for monitoring the health and the quality of the Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) spectrograph for the New Technology Telescope in La Silla at the European Southern Observatory. Briefly, we report on the innovative no-SQL database approach used for storing time-series data that best suits for automatically triggering alarm, and report high-quality graphs on the dashboard to be used by the operation support team. The system is designed to constantly and actively monitor the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) metrics, as much automatically as possible, reducing the overhead on the support and operation teams. Moreover, we will also detail about the interface designed to inject quality checks metrics from the automated SOXS Pipeline (Young et al. 2022).

SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is a single object spectrograph offering a simultaneous spectral coverage from U- to H-band, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory. It is designed to observe all kind of transients and variable sources discovered by different surveys with a highly flexible schedule maintained by the consortium, based on the Target of Opportunity concept. SOXS is going to be a fundamental spectroscopic partner for any kind of imaging survey, becoming one of the premier transient follow-up instruments in the Southern hemisphere. The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, ranging from 350 to 2000 nm. In this paper, we present the progress in the AIT phase of the Near InfraRed (NIR) arm. We describe the different AIT phases of the cryo, vacuum, opto-mechanics and detector subsystems, that finally converged at the INAF-OAB premises in Merate (Italy), where the NIR spectrograph is currently being assembled and tested, before the final assembly on SOXS., Comment: 6 pages, 8 Figures, SPIE: Astronomical Telescope + Instrumentation, Montreal 2022

SOXS is the new spectrograph for the ESO NTT telescope able to cover the optical and NIR bands thanks to two different arms: the UV-VIS (350-850 nm), and the NIR (800-2000 nm). In this article, we describe the final design of the visible camera cryostats, the test facilities for the CCD characterization, and the first results with the scientific detector. The UV-VIS detector system is based on a e2v CCD 44-82, a custom detector head coupled with the ESO Continuous Flowing Cryostat (CFC) cooling system and the New General Detector Controller (NGC) developed by ESO. The laboratory facility is based on an optical bench equipped with a Xenon lamp, filter wheels to select the wavelength, an integrating sphere, and a calibrated diode to measure the flux. This paper outlines the visible camera cryostat, the test facilities for the CCD characterization and the first results with the scientific detector in the laboratory and after the integration to the instrument.

At the end of 2021, the ESO council approved the start of the construction phase for a High Resolution Spectrograph for the ELT, formerly known as ELT-HIRES, renamed recently as ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). The current initial schedule foresees a 9-years development aimed to bring the instrument on-sky soon after the first-generation ELT instruments. ANDES combines high spectral resolution (up to 100,000), wide spectral range (0.4 mu m to 1.8 mu m with a goal from 0.35 mu m to 2.4 mu m) and extreme stability in wavelength calibration accuracy (better than 0.02 m/s rms over a 10-year period in a selected wavelength range) with massive optical collecting power of the ELT thus enabling to achieve possible breakthrough groundbreaking scientific discoveries. The main science cases cover a possible detection of life signatures in exoplanets, the study of the stability of Nature's physical constants along the universe lifetime and a first direct measurement of the cosmic acceleration. The reference design of this instrument in its extended version (with goals included) foresees 4 spectrographic modules fed by fibers, operating in seeing and diffraction limited (adaptive optics assisted) mode carried out by an international consortium composed by 24 institutes from 13 countries which poses big challenges in several areas.In this paper we will describe the approach we intend to pursue to master management and system engineering aspects of this challenging instrument focused mainly on the preliminary design phase, but looking also ahead towards its final construction.
