Background: Our study aimed to describe the variation in the frequency of correct mask use among pedestrians in the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in high-flow indoor public spaces from different geographic and social settings in Peru. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional exploratory study among pedestrians in Lima (the capital city) and other coastal and highland cities in Peru. Pedestrians were directly observed by trained medical students in 2 high-flow indoor areas at different times in November 2020 (first wave) and October 2021 (second wave). Primary outcomes included the frequencies of mask use and correct use. We applied multinomial logistic models and estimated crude and adjusted relative prevalence ratios for sex, age, obesity, and location. Additionally, we used binomial generalized linear models to estimate prevalence ratios in crude and adjusted models. Results: We included 1996 participants. The frequency of mask use was similar in both years: 96.9% in 2020 and 95.5% in 2021. However, the frequency of correct mask use significantly decreased from 81.9% (95% CI, 79.4-84.3) in 2020 to 60.3% (95% CI, 57.2-67.3) in 2021. In 2020, we observed an increase in the probability of misuse in the cities of Lima (aRP: 1.42; P = .021) and Chiclayo (aPR: 1.62, P = .001), whereas, in 2021, we noted an increase in the probability of misuse in the cities of Lima (aRP: 1.72; P Conclusions: The correct mask use decreased during the second wave, although no significant overall variations were observed in mask use in pedestrians between both periods. Also, we found regional differences in correct mask use in both periods.

The vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 has been recognized as a priority strategy to safeguard public health. However, disparities in productive, acquisitive and distributional capacity have led to delays in immunization, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Consequently, global coverage is expected to achieve herd immunity against COVID-19 by 2023 or 2024, although with highly variable coverage percentages among countries. In Latin America, immunization against COVID-19 faces different challenges to achieve herd immunity. To date (February 6, 2022), the countries that had several doses needed to immunize their populations with at least two doses (number of doses between population) were Peru (520.7%), Chile (458.4%), Argentina (298.0%), Brazil (236.6%), Bolivia (206.0%) and Uruguay (unconfirmed doses). On the other hand, Uruguay (210.7%) and Chile (238.3%) have applied twice as many doses as their populations. Argentina (194.3%), Brazil (173.6%), Ecuador (170.3%), Peru (170.3%), Costa Rica (161.1%), and Panama (153.5%) are on the way to achieving this goal. In addition, Latin American countries also showed an insufficient distribution of vaccines and a storage capacity limited to only a few cities and multiple frequencies of vaccine hesitancy. Due to these scenarios, the production of more vaccine doses and equitable distribution to the rest of the population within the Latin American region should remain a public health priority to achieve collective immunity in the shortest time possible

Aedes-borne viruses (ABV) affect humans on every inhabited continent and frequently cause epidemics. Recent epidemics of chikungunya and Zika viruses (ZIKV) highlight that preparedness for future epidemics requires assessment of susceptibility, particularly among high-risk groups. We sought to determine immunity against the three major circulating ABV among pregnant women in an ABV-endemic area of Colombia.A cross-sectional seroprevalence study was performed, enrolling women presenting to Labor and Delivery. Cord blood and maternal peripheral blood samples were obtained. IgG seroprevalence to flaviviruses and chikungunya was determined by ELISA. An abbreviated neutralization test was used to estimate the frequency and magnitude of immunity to Zika and four dengue serotypes. Cluster analyses explored epidemiologic factors associated with seroprevalence.Most women exhibited high levels of neutralizing antibodies to one or more ABV; however, nearly 20% were seronegative for flaviviruses. Our research took place after the epidemic peak of the ZIKV outbreak in Colombia in 2016. However, only 20% of pregnant women had high levels of Zika-neutralizing antibodies consistent with likely protective immunity to ZIKV.Hence, a high proportion of pregnant women in Risaralda remain susceptible to one or more ABV including the teratogenic ZIKV, indicating a risk for future epidemics in this region.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global disruption of several services, including routine immunizations. This effect has been described in several countries, but there are few detailed studies in Latin America and no reports in Ecuador. Therefore, this work aims to quantify the reduction in routine immunizations for infants during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador. 2018, 2019, and 2020 data were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Ecuador. The number of doses and the extent of immunization coverage was descriptively compared for four vaccines: rotavirus (ROTA), poliovirus (PV), pneumococcal (PCV), and pentavalent (PENTA) vaccines. There was no significant difference in doses applied during the 2018 and 2019 years. However, a significant (p < 0.05) drop of 137,000 delivered doses was observed in 2020 compared to the pre-pandemic years. Reductions in the percentage of coverage were more pronounced for the PENTA vaccine (17.7%), followed by PV (16.4%), ROTA (12%), and PCV vaccines (10.7%). Spatial analysis shows a severe impact on vaccination coverage on provinces from the Coast and Highland regions of the country. The pandemic has significantly impacted the immunization programs for infants across Ecuador. This retrospective analysis shows an urgent need to protect vulnerable zones and populations during public health emergencies.

Infections due to Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Dirofilaria, Mycoplasma, Babesia and Hepatozoon continue to be highly prevalent in dogs, especially in tropical and subtropical areas, where vectors of many of them are present. However, many clinical aspects of dogs have not been characterized in detail, including assessing the haematological alterations associated with them, particularly in Colombia and Latin America. A group of 100 dogs with Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Dirofilaria, Mycoplasma, Babesia and Hepatozoon infections/exposure were assessed by blood smear serology (SNAP4DX) and PCR in Pereira, Colombia. We performed blood counts to evaluate anaemia, leukopenia/leukocytosis, neutropenia, neutrophilia, lymphopenia/lymphocytosis, monocytosis, eosinophilia, and thrombocytopenia, among other alterations. Bivariate analyses were performed on Stata®14, with significant p < 0.05. From the total, 85% presented ≥1 infection (past or present), 66% with coinfections (≥2 pathogens) (Ehrlichia 75%), and 89% presented clinical alterations. A total of 100% showed anaemia, 70% thrombocytopenia, 61% monocytosis, and 47% neutropenia, among other alterations. Additionally, 11% presented pancytopenia and 59% bicytopenia. The median platelet count was lower in infected dogs (126,000 cells/μL) versus non-infected (221,000 cells/μL) (p = 0.003). Thrombocytopenia was higher among infected dogs (75%) versus non-infected (40%) (p = 0.006), with a 91% positive predictive value for infection. Median neutrophil count was lower in infected dogs (6591 cells/μL) versus non-infected (8804 cells/μL) (p = 0.013). Lymphocytosis occurred only among those infected (27%) (p = 0.022). Leukopenia was only observed among infected dogs (13%). Pancytopenia was only observed among infected dogs. Ehrlichiosis and other hematic infections have led to a significant burden of haematological alterations on infected dogs, including pancytopenia in a tenth of them, most with thrombocytopenia and all anemic.

Tick-borne diseases (TBD) and dirofilariosis are currently not under surveillance in most Latin American countries. In addition, there is a significant lack of studies describing the current situation in most endemic areas, including Colombia. Therefore, seroprevalence studies are crucial for understanding the epidemiology of these vector-borne diseases.A serosurvey for TBD and dirofilariosis among 100 dogs was carried out in the municipality of Pereira, located in the Coffee-Triangle region, Colombia. Samples were tested using a rapid assay test system (SNAP® 4Dx®); based on an enzyme immunoassay technique' screening for antibodies toGlobal seroprevalence to the selected vector-borne pathogens was 74% (95%CI 65-83%). The highest seroprevalence was found forGiven the high seroprevalence obtained in an area with documented ticks, there is a potential risk of zoonotic transmission to humans. Further seroprevalence studies in humans are needed to assess the prevalence of infections. Poverty is highly associated with these tick-borne pathogens in Pereira, as shown in the present study.

Introduction: Alphaviruses may cause arthritis, but there is a lack of studies assessing it in flaviviruses such as dengue. Through the 28 Joint Disease Activity Score (DAS-28), incorporating swollen joint counts, and through the Arthritis Index from Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC), we assessed pain, stiffness, and dimensions of arthritic function in post-DENV patients. Methods: Prospective study of a cohort of participants who were diagnosed with dengue in centres in Honduras from December 2019 to February 2020, with a follow-up period of 4 months to evaluate post-dengue rheumatological disease through the WOMAC and DAS-28 questionnaires. Results: After a four-month follow-up phase with 281 participants, the final cohort comprised 58.8% women and 41.20% men. After the follow-up, 63.02% persisted with the clinical findings. According to WOMAC, joint involvement was higher in women with (58.76%) (p < 0.0001) these symptoms or functional limitations when performing daily activities were limited to pain when walking (34.81% vs. 5.51%), climbing or descending stairs (36.46% vs. 8.66%), and at night at bedtime (28.73% vs. 7.08%). With the DAS-28, we found at least one alteration with inflammation or pain in 14.91% of the participants, primarily women (p < 0.01). Discussion: Joint involvement was high during the dengue epidemic in 2019. We observed a significant proportion of women with inflammation and joint pain, showing that dengue may lead to the development of chronic rheumatological findings, although lower than in CHIKV, still affecting everyday life and, consequently, their quality of life. Additional long-term evaluation studies after dengue are required.

Dengue fever is a serious and growing public health problem in Latin America and elsewhere, intensified by climate change and human mobility. This paper reviews the approaches to the epidemiological prediction of dengue fever using the One Health perspective, including an analysis of how Machine Learning techniques have been applied to it and focuses on the risk factors for dengue in Latin America to put the broader environmental considerations into a detailed understanding of the small-scale processes as they affect disease incidence. Determining that many factors can act as predictors for dengue outbreaks, a large-scale comparison of different predictors over larger geographic areas than those currently studied is lacking to determine which predictors are the most effective. In addition, it provides insight into techniques of Machine Learning used for future predictive models, as well as general workflow for Machine Learning projects of dengue fever.

La toxoplasmosis congénita continúa siendo un problema de salud pública. Aun cuando existen guías plenamente divulgadas y conocidas, se observa poca implementación de ellas en algunas instituciones de salud y una inadecuada interpretación de las pruebas serológicas en las gestantes. Esto puede generar falta de captación y tratamiento en embarazadas con primoinfección por Toxoplasma gondii.Se reportan dos casos de toxoplasmosis congénita, uno de ellos con desenlace fatal. En ambos no se siguieron las guías de práctica clínica, lo cual conllevó un diagnóstico tardío y, en consecuencia, un manejo en condiciones inapropiadas con daños graves.La toxoplasmosis es una infección congénita aún prevalente en algunos países, con secuelas graves, discapacidad neurológica y riesgo de daño ocular, incluso tardío. Además, existen algunas variedades de cepas de T. gondii con un comportamiento más agresivo en Latinoamérica, lo cual empeora la presentación de los casos e incluye mayor riesgo de muerte.Congenital toxoplasmosis continues to be a public health problem. Although clinical guidelines have been divulgated and are well known, they are not implemented in some health institutions, in addition of an inappropriate interpretation of the serological tests in pregnant women. This situation can lead to lack of screening and treatment in pregnant women with primary Toxoplasma gondii infection.We report two cases of congenital toxoplasmosis, one with a fatal outcome. In both cases, the clinical guidelines were not initially followed, leading to a delayed diagnosis and, consequently, an inappropriate management in conditions with severe damage.Toxoplasmosis is a congenital infection still prevalent in some countries, with severe sequelae, neurological disability, and even late risk of ocular damage. ­Additionally, some varieties of the T. gondii strains have a more aggressive pattern in Latin America, worsening the clinical presentation of cases and including a high risk of death.

To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with the intention to be vaccinated (ITV) against COVID-19 in Peru.Analytical cross-sectional study using the survey conducted by the University of Maryland, USA, on Facebook. The dependent variable is the ITV. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated, with their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using generalized linear models of the Poisson family, in order to evaluate the association of sociodemographic variables, compliance with community mitigation strategies, symptoms of COVID-19, mental health and acceptance of vaccination before the recommendation (AVR) by various actors and health authorities, with the ITV.Data from 17,162 adults were analyzed. The overall prevalence of the ITV was 74.9%. A lower prevalence of the ITV was associated with the female sex (PR=0.95; 95% CI: 0.94-0.97), living in a town (PR=0.95; 95% CI: 0.91-0.99) or village or other rural area (PR=0.90; 95% CI: 0.86-0.93) and the AVR of politicians (PR=0.89; 95% CI: 0.87-0.92). Conversely, having COVID-19 symptoms (PR=1.06; 95% CI: 1.03-1.09), economic insecurity (PR=1.04; 95% CI: 1.01-1.06), fears of becoming seriously ill or that a family member becomes seriously ill from COVID-19 (PR=1.49; 95% CI: 1.36-1.64) and the AVR of family and friends (PR=1.10; 95% CI: 1.08-1.12), healthcare workers (PR=1.29; 95% CI: 1.26-1.32), World Health Organization (PR=1.34; 95% CI: 1.29-1.40) and government officials (PR=1.18; 95% CI: 1.15-1.22) was associated with a higher prevalence of the ITV.Three-quarters of the respondents had the ITV. There are potentially modifiable factors that could improve vaccine acceptance.Estimar la prevalencia y los factores asociados a la intención de vacunación (IDV) contra la COVID-19 en el Perú.Estudio transversal analítico utilizando una encuesta realizada por la Universidad de Maryland, EUA, en Facebook. La variable dependiente fue la IDV. Se calcularon razones de prevalencia (RP) crudas y ajustadas, con sus intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC95%), mediante modelos lineales generalizados de la familia Poisson para evaluar la asociación de variables sociodemográficas, el cumplimiento de estrategias comunitarias de mitigación, los síntomas de la COVID-19, la salud mental y la aceptación de la vacunación ante la recomendación (AVR) por diversos actores y autoridades sanitarias.Se analizaron los datos de 17 162 adultos. La prevalencia general de la IDV fue del 74,9%. Se asociaron a una menor prevalencia de la IDV ser de sexo femenino (RP = 0,95; IC95%: 0,94-0,97), vivir en un pueblo (RP = 0,95; IC95%: 0,91-0,99) o en una aldea u otra área rural (RP = 0,90; IC95%: 0,86-0,93) y la AVR de políticos (RP = 0,89; IC95%: 0,87-0,92). A rapidly emerging global outbreak of monkeypox virus infection (MPXV) in over 50 non-endemic countries was identified in May 2022. We report the case and images of a patient with MPXV presenting with genital lesions later complicated by superimposed cellulitis in Colorado, USA. MPXV lesions are susceptible to bacterial superinfection, and with the advent of new cases, the early identification of skin lesions and their evolution during MPXV are imperative for treating clinicians. Clinicians should consider MPXV in differential diagnoses of sexually transmitted diseases presenting with genital lesions.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) produces the most frequent sexually transmitted viral infection in the world. A strategy to reduce infection rates for this virus is vaccination to young women between 9 and 13 years, so it is imperative to ensure the highest degree of acceptability to the vaccine.To determine the level of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs associated with the acceptability of the HPV vaccine in the parents of a rural and urban area of ​​the Huanuco.Analytical cross-sectional study in 168 parents. The χ2 test was used to assess associations, with 95% confidence, p significant0.05.The mean age was 35.08 years, 67% had secondary education and 27.3% of parents did not accept the vaccine. A statistically significant relationship was found between the level of medium-high knowledge (p = 0.017), positive attitudes towards vaccines (p0.001), absence of beliefs (p0.001), Catholic religion (p = 0.002) and presence of studies in the degree of education (p = 0.016) with the acceptability towards the vaccine. Those parents whose beliefs were evidenced were 6.56 times more likely not to accept the human papillomavirus vaccine.The factors associated with the acceptability of the human papillomavirus vaccine are the level of knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, religion and the degree of instruction.

El Virus Zika (ZIKV) es un arbovirus del género de los Flavivirus en la familia Flaviviridae. A este grupo pertenecen otros de importancia clínica como son el virus del dengue (DENV), virus de la fiebre amarilla (YFV) y el virus del Nilo occidental (WNV). El ZIKV fue identificado por primera vez en monos Rhesus del bosque Zika, en Uganda, del cual recibió su nombre (1947) y posteriormente fue aislado en seres humanos en Nigeria (1954). La presentación clásica de la enfermedad consiste en síndrome febril leve, poliartralgias levas a moderadas, rash maculopapular, con o sin mialgias, y con o sin cefalea. Se ha asociado al desarrollo de alteraciones neurológicas y posiblemente malformaciones congénitas en la gestación. Los mosquitos Aedes aegypti son el vector principal pero otras especies y géneros podrían estar involucrados. El ZIKV fue una enfermedad desatendida por su limitado número de casos y bajo impacto clínico en comparación con otros arbovirus. Para 2016, la Organización Mundial de la Salud declaró al ZIKV como una emergencia de salud pública de importancia internacional. Su trasmisión autóctona ha sido reportada en muchos países.

Objetivo: Determinar la proporción de pacientes que desarrollan manifestaciones y/o complicaciones neurológicas de la infección por chikungunya (NeuroCHIK) Métodos: Se llevó a cabo una revisión sistemática de la literatura en tres bases de datos (PubMed, SCI y Scopus) con el fin de identificar estudios que evaluaran la proporción de pacientes que presentan NeuroCHIK. Se realizó un modelo de meta-análisis de efectos aleatorios para calcular la prevalencia combinada y su IC95%. Se estimaron y reportaron medidas de heterogeneidad, incluyendo el estadístico Q de Cochrane, el índice I2 y la prueba de tau cuadrado. Se hicieron análisis de subgrupos por tipos de estudios, países, estudios con ≥200 pacientes, estudios evaluando dificultades de atención, encefalitis y convulsiones. El sesgo de publicación se evaluó usando un funnel-plot. Conclusión: De acuerdo a los resultados, en el escenario más conservador, cerca de 33% de casos cHiK Desarrollarían neurocHiK (36% si consideramos solo los estudios prospectivos), 10% en cefalitis y 3% convulsiones.

Bloodstream infections are an increasing problem and currently represent a threat to public health, overcoming diseases such as HIV. Bacteremia accounts for approximately 15% of all nosocomial infections and affects 1% of all hospitalized patients.To describe the clinical, epidemiological and microbiological characteristic of episodes of nosocomial bacteremia occurring in a Colombian hospital.Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study including adult patients, hospitalized in the internal medicine unit at the University Hospital of Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia, during years 2014 to 2016, who met the criteria of the CDC for bloodstream infection. The protocol was approved by the Hospital Ethics Committee and by the Research Ethics Committee of the Industrial University of Santander.We reviewed 450 clinical records with 148 patients and 182 microbiological isolates. 53% were male. The most frequent comorbidities were: high blood pressure (46.6%), HIV infection (29.7%). The vascular and urinary systems were the most frequent anatomical sites as the source of the infection (respectively 37.3% and 38.3%). Case fatality rate was 29%. The pathogens most frequently isolated were: Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (globally: 49.8%) and Staphylococcus aureus 12.1%. The multivariate analysis showed a relationship between anemia and in-hospital mortality (OR = 17.3, 95%CI 2.95-102.0).Bacteremia is a frequent infection during hospital care that presents high mortality. It is noteworthy the predominance of Enterobacteriaceae isolates with broad profiles of resistance. The history of HIV infection is one of the most frequent which deserves to be evaluated as a risk group.

Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis includes three clinical entities: tuberculous meningitis, intracranial tuberculoma, and spinal tuberculous arachnoiditis. All three categories are encountered frequently in regions of the world where the incidence of TB is high. Meningeal tuberculosis is a medical emergency: it is the most severe, lethal and disabling form of tuberculosis. Early diagnosis and treatment can be lifesaving. Even, in developed countries the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is difficult, frequently delayed or missed, and is often not microbiologically confirmed. Here I report a case of miliary tuberculosis, in a patient with diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, but without HIV infection. Although the patient had regular contact with healthcare staff (hemodialysis), miliary tuberculosis diagnosis was considerably delayed. This patient, subsequently evolved into tuberculous meningitis. In spite of quadruple anti-tuberculosis treatment, corticosteroids, and general supportive care, this case resulted in death.

There are no meta-analyses specifically describing the prevalence of zoonotic and non-zoonotic genotypes of Giardia intestinalis in cats, which would be useful in defining the importance of cats as a source of zoonotic transmission. We performed a systematic review of the literature in three databases (PubMed, Scopus and SciELO) to assess the proportion of cats that were infected with specific G. intestinalis genotypes. A meta-analysis using a random effects model was performed to calculate the pooled prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). A 2-tailed alpha level of 5% was used for hypothesis testing. Measures of heterogeneity, including Cochran's Q statistic, the I2 index, and the tau-squared test, were estimated and reported. Subgroup analyses were conducted by geographic area and animal origin, as well as coinfection. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel-plot. Up to November 1, 2015, the literature search yielded 780 articles, of which 29 studies were valid for analysis. The pooled prevalence rate was higher for genotype F (19 studies, n=368 cats) with 55.8% [95%CI (42.8%-68.7%), τ2=0.0463]. For genotype A (21 n=409) it was 38.7% [95%CI (29.0%-48.4%), τ2=0.0527], for genotype D (7, n=276) 8.9% [95%CI (2.1%-15.8%), τ2=0.0024], for genotype C (2, n=212) 3.1% [95%CI (2.5%-3.5%), τ2=0.0001], for genotype E (3, n=187) 2.9% [95%CI (0.0%-8.1%), τ2=0.0009], and for genotype B (4, n=230) it was 2.8% [95%CI (0.0%-5.7%), τ2=0.0002]. Genotypes A and B of G. intestinalis are present in a wide range of hosts, including humans and cats, whilst genotype E has been reported in bovines, ovines, caprine and porcine animals, as well as in dogs and cats; and genotype F is almost exclusive to cats. Thus genotypes A and B are the most important for zoonotic transmission. In this study, after genotype F (55.5%), genotype A yielded more than 38% in cats (95%CI 29-48). This has interesting possible implications in zoonotic transmission of giardiasis between cats and humans.

Los arbovirus se definen como un grupo de virus que existen principalmente gracias a la transmisión biológica entre huéspedes vertebrados susceptibles por artrópodos hematófagos. Se consolidan como un grupo taxonómicamente diverso, conformado por más de 500 virus de los cuales 150 infectan al hombre. Gracias a la amplia distribución de los vectores y a la vigilancia y control que requieren estos artrópodos es que se hace casi imposible evitar la expansión de estas enfermedades a casi cualquier país tropical o subtropical del mundo, e incluso algunas regiones templadas, permitiendo que en la actualidad se encuentren globalmente dispersas y que se consoliden como infecciones endémicas de muchas regiones, entre ellas América Latina

Bacterial meningitis is an important cause of infectious neurological morbidity and mortality. Its incidence has decreased with the introduction of vaccination programmes against preventable agents. However, low-income and middle-income countries with poor access to health care still have a significant burden of the disease. Thus, the relationship between the Gini coefficient and H. influenzae and M. tuberculosis meningitis incidence in Colombia, during 2008-2011, was assessed. In this ecological study, the Gini coefficient was obtained from the Colombian Department of Statistics, incidence rates were calculated (cases/1,000,000 pop) and linear regressions were performed using the Gini coefficient, to assess the relationship between the latter and the incidence of meningitis. It was observed that when inequality increases in the Colombian departments, the incidence of meningitis also increases, with a significant association in the models (p0.01) for both M. tuberculosis (r²=0.2382; p0.001) and H. influenzae (r²=0.2509; p0.001). This research suggests that high Gini coefficient values influence the incidence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, showing that social inequality is critical to disease occurrence. Early detection, supervised treatment, vaccination coverage, access to health care are efficient control strategies.

International tourism is increasing. Preventive Medicine remains important, especially the Pre-Travel Consultation (PTC).To determinate, the characteristics of tourists associated with PTC in tourists at Cuzco, Peru.A cross-sectional, analytical study, a secondary analysis of data from a database generated by survey of foreign tourists who visited Cuzco, in the waiting room of the airport was performed. The main variable was to have had a PTC at the tourist's country of residence, the area of residence was categorized according to health/risk of acquiring infectious diseases as traveler's diarrhea during their stay. These and other variables were analyzed and statistical association with generalized linear models were done.Of the 1827 tourists, 875 (48%) were men, with a median age of 33 years (range 18-88 years); 42% had a PTC. In the multivariate analysis, it was found that a PTC lower frequency was associated with male gender (aPR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.75-0.94), and a higher frequency was associated with have born (aPR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.39-2.27) and reside in an area of low risk of acquiring infectious diseases (aPR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.26-3.00), adjusted for the history of a disease.Sex, region of birth and residence of tourists (as risk of acquiring infectious diseases) are associated with having a PTC. These findings may serve the health and government attending tourists who come to our country.

El manejo de un paciente infectado por el virus de inmunodefi ciencia humana (VIH) implica un enfoque multidisciplinario que incluya diversas esferas de la salud de la persona1 . Sin embargo, en muchas oportunidades la evaluación se centra en marcadores meramente biológicos descuidando aspectos de índole psicológico y social que tendrían importante repercusión en la calidad de vida de estos pacientes. Dentro de ellos, las alteraciones del sueño (AS), son un factor a considerar, más aún cuando han demostrado tener un impacto negativo en la calidad de vida de las personas2 , asimismo, un incremento de la probabilidad de desarrollo de diabetes mellitus, enfermedad cardiovascular y dolencias respiratorias3 .&nbsp

La identificación de eventos adversos es un componente de alta relevancia en salud. En América Latina y el Caribe, tal medición no siempre es tenida en cuenta pese a la considerable frecuencia con que tales eventos son reportados — esto sin contar la proporción de casos que no se consignan en los registros. Se estima que 10 de cada 100 pacientes hospitalizados han presentado efectos adversos alguna vez durante la hospitalización y se espera que la tasa aumente a 20 si se duplica el número de días hospitalizados. En el Estudio Iberoamericano de Efectos Adversos (IBEAS), el primer trabajo a gran escala en la región sobre incidentes que causan daño en la asistencia sanitaria, realizado en 58 hospitales de cinco países, la prevalencia estimada de efectos adversos fue de 10%, hallándose además que más de 28% de los efectos adversos desencadenaron discapacidad y 6%, muerte (1, 2).

To determine the percentage of patients who would develop chronic inflammatory rheumatism (CIR) following chikungunya (CHIK) virus disease.We conducted a systematic review of the literature in 3 databases (PubMed, Science Citation Index, and Scopus) to identify studies assessing the proportion of patients who progress to CHIK-CIR. We performed a random-effects model meta-analysis to calculate the pooled prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). A 2-tailed alpha level of 5% was used for hypothesis testing. Measures of heterogeneity, including Cochran's Q statistic, the IUp to June 15, 2015, our literature search yielded 578 citations. The pooled prevalence of CHIK-CIR in 18 selected studies among 5,702 patients was 40.22% (95% CI 31.11-49.34; τAccording to our results in the most conservative scenario, approximately 25% of CHIK cases would develop CHIK-CIR (34% if we just consider the most representative studies), and 14% would develop chronic arthritis.
