F-type ATP synthases play a key role in oxidative and photophosphorylation processes producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for most biochemical reactions in living organisms. In contrast to the mitochondrial FOF1-ATP synthases those of chloroplasts are known to be mostly monomers with approx. 15% fraction of oligomers interacting presumably non-specifically in a thylakoid membrane. To shed light to the nature of this difference we studied interactions of the chloroplast ATP synthases using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method. Here, we report evidence of I-shaped dimerization of solubilized FOF1-ATP synthases from spinach chloroplasts at different salinity. The structural data were obtained by SAXS and showed dimerization in response to changes in ionic strength. The best model describing SAXS data was two ATP-synthases connected through F1/F1’ parts, presumably via their δ-subunits, forming dimers with the “I” shape. Such I-shaped dimers might possibly connect the neighboring lamellae in thylakoid stacks assuming that the FOF1 monomers comprising such dimers are embedded in different thylakoid membranes. If this type of dimerization exists in nature, it might be one of the pathways of inhibition of chloroplast FOF1-ATP synthase for preventing of ATP hydrolysis in dark, when salinity in plant chloroplasts is rising. Together with a redox switch inserted into a γ-subunit of chloroplast FOF1 and lateral oligomerization, an I-shaped dimerization might comprise a subtle regulatory process of ATP synthesis and stabilize the structure of thylakoid stacks in chloroplasts.

Proteorhodopsins (PRs), bacterial light-driven outward proton pumps comprise the first discovered and largest family of rhodopsins, they play a significant role in life on the Earth. A big remaining mystery was that up-to-date there was no described bacterial rhodopsins pumping protons at acidic pH despite the fact that bacteria live in different pH environment. Here we describe conceptually new bacterial rhodopsins which are operating as outward proton pumps at acidic pH. A comprehensive function-structure study of a representative of a new clade of proton pumping rhodopsins which we name “mirror proteorhodopsins”, from Sphingomonas paucimobilis (SpaR) shows cavity/gate architecture of the proton translocation pathway rather resembling channelrhodopsins than the known rhodopsin proton pumps. Another unique property of mirror proteorhodopsins is that proton pumping is inhibited by a millimolar concentration of zinc. We also show that mirror proteorhodopsins are extensively represented in opportunistic multidrug resistant human pathogens, plant growth-promoting and zinc solubilizing bacteria. They may be of optogenetic interest.

Ferritin is a vital protein complex responsible for storing iron in almost all living organisms. It plays a crucial role in various metabolic pathways, inflammation processes, stress response, and pathogenesis of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In this review we discuss the role of ferritin in diseases, cellular iron regulation, its structural features, and its role in biotechnology. We also show that molecular mechanisms of ferritin self-assembly are key for a number of biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications. The assembly pathways strongly depend on the interface context of ferritin monomers and the stability of its different intermediate oligomers. To date, several schemes of self-assembly kinetics have been proposed. Here, we compare different self-assembly mechanisms and discuss the possibility of self-assembly control by switching between deadlock intermediate states.

The article is devoted to the analysis of methodological and source-related difficulties faced by researchers of everyday life of employees of the Soviet military administration in Germany. The main attention is paid to the historiographical prerequisites for addressing this topic, the object of study, the features of various sources and the problem of «searching» for everyday life in them.

Despite remarkable progress, mainly due to the development of LCP and 'bicelle' crystallization, lack of structural information remains a bottleneck in membrane protein (MP) research. A major reason is the absence of complete understanding of the mechanism of crystallization. Here we present small-angle scattering studies of the evolution of the "bicelle" crystallization matrix in the course of MP crystal growth. Initially, the matrix corresponds to liquid-like bicelle state. However, after adding the precipitant, the crystallization matrix transforms to jelly-like state. The data suggest that this final phase is composed of interconnected ribbon-like bilayers, where crystals grow. A small amount of multilamellar phase appears, and its volume increases concomitantly with the volume of growing crystals. We suggest that the lamellar phase surrounds the crystals and is critical for crystal growth, which is also common for LCP crystallization. The study discloses mechanisms of "bicelle" MP crystallization and will support rational design of crystallization.

The article examines how during the occupation of Germany after World War II, employees of the Soviet military administration interacted with former allies in the anti-Hitler coalition. Based on memories of the employees, various images of allies were identified. The author comes to the inference that the practices of interaction between Soviet employees and representatives of the allied administrations depended on the logic of the Cold war development.

The formation of two metastable complexes (M/L = 1/2 and 1/1) is shown for low temperature co-condensates of europium and samarium vapors with mesogenic ligand 4-penthyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB). The DFT-calculations based on hybrid B3LYP potential have been carried out to study the equilibrium structures of complexes. The model structures including one and two metal atoms with antiparallel disposition of ligand molecules are considered. The spectral shifts for ligand CN-group stretching vibrations and the relative thermal stability of the complexes are discussed.

The IR-spectroscopic study of samarium - mesogenic 4-pentyl-4'-cyanophenylpiridine (5Py) low temperatures solid co-condensates was made in temperature range 90-300 K. The formation of two metastable complexes has been found. The kinetics of transformation of one complex to another is discussed.

The complexes Ln·2L are formed from metal atoms at 4–30 K, whereas an increase in the metal concentration (M/Ar > 10−4) and temperature (80–210 K) results in the complexes 2Ln·2L (Ln = Sm, Eu; L = 4-pentyl-4’-cyanobiphenyl).
