Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to investigate the effect of prophylactic caffeine use in the treatment of apnea and other clinic outcomes in very low birth weight infants. Methods: From inception to 20 May 2022, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO, CNKI, and Cochrane databases were systematically searched. The meta-analysis was carried out using STATA and RevMan software. Results: Eleven randomized controlled trials including a total of 4375 very low birth weight infants were evaluated. The pooled demonstrated that prophylactic caffeine use was linked with a significantly lower probability of AOP (OR 0.31, 95%CI: 0.19-0.49, P<0.001), duration of mechanical ventilation, and oxygen therapy when compared to control group. It also reduced the incidence of BPD (OR 0.62, 95%CI: 0.54-0.71, P<0.001), PDA (OR 0.49, 95%CI: 0.30-0.80, P=0.005) and ROP (OR 0.76, 95%CI: 0.65-0.90, P=0.001), without raising the risk of NEC, IVH and death before hospital discharge ( P＞0.05). Conclusion: This meta-analysis confirmed the beneficial effects of prophylactic caffeine for preventing apnea of prematurity as well as for improving clinical outcomes. However, further research is needed before recommending widespread use of caffeine as a prophylactic treatment in the management of all preterm infants.

Crop breeding for durable disease resistance is challenging due to the rapid evolution of pathogen virulence. While progress in resistance (R) gene cloning and stacking has accelerated in recent years1-3, the identification of corresponding avirulence (Avr) genes in many pathogens is hampered by the lack of high-throughput screening options. To address this technology gap, we developed a platform for pooled library screening in plant protoplasts for rapid identification of interactingR/Avrpairs. We validated this platform by isolating known and novelAvrgenes from wheat stem rust (Puccinia graminisf. sp.tritici) by screening a designed library of putative effectors against individualRgenes. RapidAvrgene identification provides molecular tools to understand and track pathogen virulence evolution by genotype surveillance and optimiseRgene deployment and stacking strategies. This screening platform is broadly applicable to many crop pathogens, whilst also adaptable for screening genes involved in other protoplast-selectable traits.

Background Early neurological deterioration (END) sometimes occurs in patients with penetrating artery territory infarction (PATI) and leads to poor prognosis. In this study, we analyzed clinical and neuroimaging characteristics, especially the infarct patterns of PATI on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to investigate whether the “island sign” pattern is associated with END.Methods One hundred thirteen patients with acute PATI admitted within 48 h after onset from May 2020 to July 2022 were enrolled in this study. They were divided into two groups according to infarct location: the territories of the lenticulostriate arteries (LSA) and paramedian pontine arteries (PPA). The patients in each group were further classified into the END and non-END groups according to whether they developed END. The PATI patterns were divided into with and without the “island sign” as observed on DWI. The clinical and neuroimaging characteristics of the patients were analyzed within the LSA and PPA groups.Results END was found in 17 patients (27.9%) in the LSA group and 20 patients (38.5%) in the PPA group. In the multivariate analysis, the independent predictors were the “island sign” (OR 4.88 95% CI 1.03–23.2 P = 0.045) and high initial National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (OR 1.79 95% CI 1.08–2.98 P = 0.024) in the LSA group and lesions extending to the ventral pontine surface (OR 7.53 95% CI 1.75–32.37 P = 0.007) in the PPA group.Conclusions The predictive factors for END were different in the LSA and PPA groups. The “island sign” was particularly associated with END in the LSA group.

Although the traditional convolutional neural network is applied to image segmentation successfully, it has some limitations. That's the context information of the long-range on the image is not well captured. With the success of the introduction of self-attentional mechanisms in the field of natural language processing (NLP), people have tried to introduce the attention mechanism in the field of computer vision. It turns out that self-attention can really solve this long-range dependency problem. This paper is a summary on the application of self-attention to image segmentation in the past two years. And think about whether the self-attention module in this field can replace convolution operation in the future.

CuO micro-crystals have been synthesized by a one-step, large-scale and environment-friendly hydrothermal route. The crystalline structure, morphology, valence state and elemental composition of the CuO micro-crystals were analyzed using different technologies. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were studied to probe the electrochemical glucose oxidation properties of the CuO electrode, revealing excellent electrocatalytic performance with fast response time, low detection limit and applicable linear detection range. In addition, it shows good selectivity to glucose when there are interferences coexisting in the human blood. All these results imply the potential application of the sample as electrode materials of non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

Competency is closely related to the occurrence of the behavior. Breastfeeding competence is the mastery of different breastfeeding factors which intervene in breastfeeding behavior. Breastfeeding competence could improve the breastfeeding behavior. However, few studies have paid attention to the status and the influencing factors of breastfeeding competency. The breastfeeding competency of pregnant women in third trimester pregnancy has the greatest impact on breastfeeding behavior after childbirth. Therefore, the objective of this study were to investigate the breastfeeding competency level and independent risk factors for breastfeeding competency among pregnant women in third trimester pregnancy. A cross-sectional survey method and convenience sampling method was used in the study. The general information questionnaire including age, gestational week, educational background, and so on were used to investigate the general information of pregnant women and their husbands. A breastfeeding competency scale (BCS) was used to investigate the breastfeeding competency of pregnant women. The total score of the BCS ranges from 38 to 190, with higher scores indicating greater breastfeeding competency. Lower level, medium level and higher level are 38–89, 90–140 and 141–190 respectively. Type-D Scale-14 (DS14) was used to investigate the type D personality of pregnant women. A multivariable linear regression was used to examine the independent predictors of breastfeeding competency. A total of 550 questionnaires were collected and finally 525 effective questionnaires were collected. The age of 525 pregnant women is (30.24 ± 3.954) years old. The breastfeeding competency score of pregnant women was (134 ± 19.741). This review aims to demonstrate the current core competencies of the Chinese midwifery workforce and to summarize the influencing factors of core competencies.Midwifery core competencies are crucial to providing high-quality maternal and newborn health care, but little is known about the overall status of the core competencies of the Chinese midwifery workforce.A scoping review was conducted following the latest Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scoping review methodology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist.Forty-one studies were included in this review. Regarding core competency assessment tools, the Midwife Core Competency Scale was used most frequently among 16 identified tools. Generally, the core competencies of the Chinese midwifery workforce were at a moderate or high level, but the competencies in pre-pregnancy, public health care and integrative competence were relatively inadequate. The main factors influencing the core competencies of the midwifery workforce were their working years, educational level and training experience.This review provides a comprehensive overview of the core competencies of the Chinese midwifery workforce at the national level. Future studies are encouraged to use objective instruments to reflect core competencies and explore the intervenable influencing factors of core competencies.Core competency assessment tools can be used to select the qualified midwifery workforce. Targeted core competency enhancement programmes should be formulated based on the current core competencies level and the factors influencing core competencies.

Autophagy of granulosa cells (GCs) is involved in follicular atresia, which occurs repeatedly during the ovarian development cycle. Several circadian clock genes are rhythmically expressed in both rodent ovarian tissues and GCs. Nuclear receptor subfamily 1 group D member 1 (NR1D1), an important component of the circadian clock system, is involved in the autophagy process through the regulation of autophagy-related genes. However, there are no reports illustrating the role of the circadian clock system in mouse GC autophagy. In the present study, we found that core circadian clock genes ( Bmal1, Per2, Nr1d1, and Dbp) and an autophagy-related gene ( Atg5) exhibited rhythmic expression patterns across 24 h in mouse ovaries and primary GCs. Treatment with SR9009, an agonist of NR1D1, significantly reduced the expression of Bmal1, Per2, and Dbp in mouse GCs. ATG5 expression was significantly attenuated by SR9009 treatment in mouse GCs. Conversely, Nr1d1 knockdown increased ATG5 expression in mouse GCs. Decreased NR1D1 expression at both the mRNA and protein levels was detected in the ovaries of Bmal1−/− mice, along with elevated expression of ATG5. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and electrophoretic mobility shift assay showed that NR1D1 inhibited Atg5 transcription by binding to two putative retinoic acid-related orphan receptor response elements within the promoter. In addition, rapamycin-induced autophagy and ATG5 expression were partially reversed by SR9009 treatment in mouse GCs. Taken together, our current data demonstrated that the circadian clock regulates GC autophagy through NR1D1-mediated inhibition of ATG5 expression, and thus, plays a role in maintaining autophagy homeostasis in GCs.

Brucella spp. are facultative intracellular pathogens that invade, survive and proliferate in numerous phagocytic and non-phagocytic cell types, thereby leading to human and animal brucellosis. Outer membrane proteins (Omps) are major immunogenic and protective antigens that are implicated in Brucella virulence. A strain deleted of the omp16 gene has not been obtained which suggests that the Omp16 protein is vital for Brucella survival. Nevertheless, we previously constructed an omp16 conditional deletion strain of Brucella, ΔOmp16. Here, the virulence and immune response elicted by this strain were assessed in a mouse model of infection. Splenomegaly was significantly reduced at two weeks post-infection in ΔOmp16-infected mice compared to infection with the parental strain. The bacterial load in the spleen also was significantly decreased at this post-infection time point in ΔOmp16-infected mice. Histopathological changes in the spleen were observed via hematoxylin-eosin staining and microscopic examination which showed that infection with the ΔOmp16 strain alleviated spleen histopathological alterations compared to mice infected with the parental strain. Moreover, the levels of humoral and cellular immunity were similar in both ΔOmp16-infected mice and parental strain-infected mice. The results overall show that the virulence of ΔOmp16 is attenuated markedly, but that the immune responses mediated by the deletion and parental strains in mice are indistinguishable. The data provide important insights that illuminate the pathogenic strategies adopted by Brucella.

Trueperella pyogenes is an important bacterial pathogen of a wide range of domestic and wild animals. Autophagy plays a key role in eliminating T. pyogenes in a process that is dependent on mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response also is critical for autophagy regulation. However, the relationship between ER stress and T. pyogenes is uncharacterized and the intracellular survival mechanisms of T. pyogenes have not been investigated adequately. In this study, we show that T. pyogenes invades goat endometrial epithelial cells (gEECs). Meanwhile, we observed that GRP78 was upregulated significantly, and that unfolded protein response (UPR) also were activated after infection. Additionally, treatment with activators and inhibitors of ER stress downregulated and upregulated, respectively, intracellular survival of T. pyogenes. Blocking the three arms of the UPR pathway separately enhanced T. pyogenes survival and inflammatory reaction to different levels. We also show that LC3-labeled autophagosomes formed around the invading T. pyogenes and that autolysosome-like vesicles were visible in gEECs using transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, tunicamycin did not inhibit the intracellular survival of T. pyogenes under conditions in which autophagy was blocked. Finally, severe challenge with T. pyogenes induced host cell apoptosis which also may indicate a role for ER stress in the infection response. In summary, we demonstrate here that ER stress and UPR are novel modulators of autophagy that inhibit T. pyogenes intracellular survival in gEECs, which has the potential to be developed as an effective therapeutic target in T. pyogenes infectious disease.

The circadian clock system plays an important role in regulating testosterone synthesis in mammals. Male Bmal1-/- mice are infertile with low serum testosterone levels and decreased expression of testicular steroidogenic genes, suggesting that circadian clock genes regulate testosterone biosynthesis by activating steroidogenic gene transcription. However, whether the circadian clock regulates testosterone production via other genes remains unknown. Using Bmal1-/- mice and their wild-type (WT) siblings, we aimed to identify additional genes by which the circadian clock regulates testosterone synthesis. WT and Bmal1-/- mouse testes sections had similar normal morphologies, although there was a decrease in testicular spermatozoa in the Bmal1-/- mice. Low serum testosterone levels were detected in the Bmal1-/- mice. RNA sequencing identified 37 and 48 genes that were differentially expressed between WT and Bmal1-/- mouse testes at circadian time (CT2 and CT14), respectively. The cholesterol metabolism pathway was significantly enriched in the KEGG pathway analysis, and there was lower expression of three apolipoprotein genes (Apoa1, Apoa2, and Apoc3) at CT2 in the testes of Bmal1-/- mice than in those of WT mice. These decreases in Apoa1, Apoa2, and Apoc3 expression were verified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis, which also revealed downregulation of the expression of the circadian clock (Per2, Dbp, and Nr1d1) and steroidogenic (StAR, Cyp11a1, and Hsd17b3) genes. The expression of circadian clock genes was relatively stable in WT mice over a 20-h period, whereas there was clear circadian rhythmic expression of Apoa1, Apoa2, Apoc3, StAR, Cyp11a1, Hsd3b2, and Hsd17b3. Bmal1-/- mice showed severely reduced expression of testicular circadian clock genes at three time points (CT4, CT12, and CT20), and a reduction in mRNA expression levels of Apo (Apoa1, Apoa2, and Apoc3) and steroidogenic (StAR, Cyp11a1, Hsd3b2, and Hsd17b3) genes. Oil Red O staining showed decreased lipid aggregation in the Leydig cells of Bmal1-/- mouse testes. Considering the vital role of Apo genes in high-density lipoprotein formation and cholesterol transport, the present data suggest that the circadian clock system regulates testosterone production by orchestrating the rhythmic expression of Apo genes. These data extend our understanding of the role of the circadian clock in regulating testosterone production in mammals.

Background: To elucidate clinical applications of detecting serum levels of H19 and CRP in predicting the severity of ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods: Two hundred UC patients were recruited, and classified to mild/moderate group and severe group according to the Truelove-Witts grading system. Serum levels of H19 and CRP in UC patients were detected by turbidimetric inhibition immuno assay and qRT-PCR. Differences in serum levels of H19 and CRP between mild/moderate group and severe group were analyzed. By plotting ROC curves, the diagnostic potentials of H19 and CRP in UC were evaluated. Kappa conformance test was conducted to validate the conformance of detecting serum levels of H19 and CRP to clinical diagnosis of UC. Results: Serum levels of H19 and CRP were higher in UC patients of severe group than those of mild/moderate group. Their levels were both positively correlated to the severity of UC. High sensitivity (83.3%) and specificity (80.0%), as well as the maximum Youden index (0.633) were obtained at the cut-off value for H19 level of 2.755, and AUC was 0.8835. Meanwhile, Kappa coefficient (κ) was 0.760 at the cut-off value for H19 level of 2.755, showing a high conformance to clinical diagnosis of UC. In addition, acceptable sensitivity (68.49%) and high specificity (85.83%), as well as the maximum Youden index (0.543) were obtained at the cut-off value for CRP level of 6.390 mg/L, and AUC was 0.8018. κ was 0.435, showing an acceptable conformance to clinical diagnosis of UC based on serum level of CRP. Conclusion: Serum levels of H19 and CRP increase with the deterioration of UC. Detecting their serum levels has a consistent result to clinical diagnosis of UC, with a superior performance of H19 than that of CRP.

The mosquito family Culicidae is divided into two subfamilies named the Culicinae and Anophelinae.Nix, the dominant male-determining factor, has only been found in the culicinesAedes aegyptiandAe. albopictus, two important arboviral vectors that belong to the subgenus Stegomyia. Here we performed sex-specific whole-genome sequencing and RNAseq of divergent mosquito species and explored additional male-inclusive datasets to investigate the distribution ofNix. Except for the Culex genus,Nixhomologs were found in all species surveyed from the Culicinae subfamily, including 12 additional species from three highly divergent tribes comprising 4 genera, suggestingNixoriginated at least 133-165 MYA. Heterologous expression of one of three divergentNixORFs inAe. aegyptiresulted in partial masculinization of genetic females as evidenced by morphology anddoublesexsplicing. It is not clear whether insufficient transgene expression or sequence divergence or both are responsible for the lack of phenotype for the other two. Phylogenetic analysis suggestsNixis related tofemaleless(fle), a recently described intermediate sex-determining factor found exclusively in anopheline mosquitoes.Nixfrom all species has a conserved structure, including three RNA-recognition motifs (RRMs), as doesfle. However,Nixhas evolved at a much faster rate thanfle. The RRM3 of bothNixandfleare related to the single RRM of a widely distributed and conserved splicing factortransformer-2(tra2). RRM3-based phylogenetic analysis suggests this domain inNixandflemay have evolved fromtra2in a common ancestor of mosquitoes. Our results provide insights into the evolution of sex-determination and sex chromosomes in mosquitoes, and will inform broad applications of mosquito-control strategies based on manipulating sex ratios towards the non-biting males.

Progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus (PERM) is a rare neurological disease of unknown etiology, and most patients with PERM are positive for anti-glycine receptor (GlyR) antibody. In this case study, we report a clinical case of a varicella-zoster virus-infected patient who developed anti-GlyR antibody-positive PERM. He initially suffered from herpes zoster and gradually developed symptoms of impaired brainstem functions including hoarse voice and dysphagia, accompanied by paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity. The patient also suffered from severe spasms, which were easily triggered by external stimuli. Glycine receptor antibodies were then found to be positive in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, and the diagnosis of PERM was confirmed. Methylprednisolone and gamma globulin treatments were given, and spasms were improved after treatment. Unfortunately, the patient's family insisted on automatic discharge and the patient passed away several days later.

Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses that cause dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika. Although recent success in reverse genetics has facilitated rapid progress in basic and applied research, integration of forward genetics with modern technologies remains challenging in this important species, as up to 47% of its chromosome is refractory to genetic mapping due to extremely low rate of recombination. Here, we report the development of a marker-assisted mapping strategy to readily screen for and genotype only the rare but informative recombinants, drastically increasing both the resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. Using marker-assisted mapping, we mapped a transgene that was inserted in a >100-Mb recombination desert and a sex-linked spontaneous red-eye (re) mutation just outside the region. We subsequently determined, by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout, that cardinal is the causal gene of re, which is the first forward genetic identification of a causal gene in Ae. aegypti. The identification of the causal gene of the sex-linked re mutation provides the molecular foundation for using gene editing to develop versatile and stable genetic sexing methods. To facilitate genome-wide forward genetics in Ae. aegypti, we generated and compiled a number of lines with markers throughout the genome. Thus, by overcoming the challenges presented by the vast recombination deserts and the scarcity of markers, we have shown that effective forward genetic analysis is increasingly feasible in this important arboviral vector species.

The article aims to outline a contrast between three priorities for nursing management proposed a decade ago and key features of the following 10 years of developments on artificial intelligence for health care and nursing management. This analysis intends to contribute to update the international debate on bridging the essence of health care and nursing management priorities and the focus of artificial intelligence developers.Artificial intelligence research promises innovative approaches to supporting nurses' clinical decision-making and to conduct tasks not related to patient interaction, including administrative activities and patient records. Yet, even though there has been an increase in international research and development of artificial intelligence applications for nursing care during the past 10 years, it is unclear to what extent the priorities of nursing management have been embedded in the devised artificial intelligence solutions.Starting from three priorities for nursing management identified in 2011 in a special issue of the Journal Nursing Management, we went on to identify recent evidence concerning 10 years of artificial intelligence applications developed to support health care management and nursing activities since then.The article discusses to what extent priorities in health care and nursing management may have to be revised while adopting artificial intelligence applications or, alternatively, to what extent the direction of artificial intelligence developments may need to be revised to contribute to long acknowledged priorities of nursing management.We have identified a conceptual gap between both sets of ideas and provide a discussion on the need to bridge that gap, while admitting that there may have been recent field developments still unreported in scientific literature.Artificial intelligence developers and health care nursing managers need to be more engaged in coordinating the future development of artificial intelligence applications with a renewed set of nursing management priorities.

Alfalfa sprouts are among the most nutritionally rich foods, and light exposure is a critical factor in determining their biomass and quality. However, detailed metabolic and molecular differences between yellow and green alfalfa sprouts remain unclear. In this study, comprehensive metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses were integrated to evaluate the nutrient composition of alfalfa sprouts during germination with or without light exposure. Differentially expressed genes and differentially accumulated metabolites in green and yellow alfalfa sprouts were significantly enriched in secondary metabolic pathways, such as the isoflavonoid biosynthesis pathway. Green alfalfa sprouts contained a wide variety of lipids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, among which the top three upregulated were calycosin, methyl gallate, and epicatechin 3-gallate, whereas yellow alfalfa sprouts contained relatively more isoquercitrin. These results provide new insights into the nutritional value and composition of alfalfa sprouts under different germination regimes.

Objectives. To compare the differences of epidemiology analysis in population birth defects (BDs) between the rural and urban areas of Hunan Province in China. Methods. The data of population-based BDs in Liuyang county (rural) and Shifeng district (urban) in Hunan Province for 2014–2018 were analyzed. BD prevalence rates, percentage change, and annual percentage change (APC) by sex and age were calculated to evaluate time trends. Risk factors associated with BDs were assessed using simple and multiple logistic regression analyses. Results. The BD prevalence rate per 10,000 perinatal infants (PIs) was 220.54 (95% CI: 211.26-230.13) in Liuyang and 181.14 (95% CI: 161.18-202.87) in Shifeng. Significant decreasing trends in BD prevalence rates were noted in the female PIs ( APC = − 9.31 , P = 0.044 ) and the total BD prevalence rate in Shifeng ( APC = − 14.14 , P = 0.039 ). Risk factors for BDs were as follows: rural area, male PIs, PIs with gestational age < 37 weeks, PIs with birth weight < 2500 g , and migrant pregnancies. Conclusions. We should focus on rural areas, reduce the prevalence of premature and low birth weight infants, and provide maternal healthcare services for migrant pregnancies for BD prevention from the perspective of population-based BD surveillance.

Prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 (PTGS2) is a rate-limiting enzyme in prostaglandin synthesis. The present study assessed the role of the uterine circadian clock on Ptgs2 transcription in response to steroid hormones during early pregnancy. We demonstrated that the core clock genes (Bmal1, Per2, Nr1d1, and Dbp), Vegf, and Ptgs2, and their encoded proteins, have rhythmic expression in the mouse uterus from days 3.5 to 4.5 (D3.5-4.5) of pregnancy. Progesterone (P4) treatment of cultured uterus endometrial stromal cells (UESCs) isolated from mPer2Luciferase reporter gene knock-in mice on D4 induced a phase shift in PER2::LUCIFERASE oscillations. This P4-induced phase shift of PER2::LUCIFERASE oscillations was significantly attenuated by the P4 antagonist RU486. Additionally, the amplitude of PER2::LUCIFERASE oscillations was increased by estradiol (E2) treatment in the presence of P4. Consistently, the mRNA levels of clock genes (Bmal1 and Per2), Vegf, and Ptgs2 were markedly increased by E2 treatment of UESCs in the presence of P4. Treatment with E2 also promoted prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis by UESCs. Depletion of Bmal1 in UESCs by small-interfering RNA (siRNA) decreased the transcript levels of clock genes (Nr1d1 and Dbp), Vegf, and Ptgs2 compared with nonsilencing siRNA treatment. Bmal1 knockdown also inhibited PGE2 synthesis. Moreover, the mRNA expression levels of clock genes (Nr1d1 and Dbp), Vegf, and Ptgs2, and their respective proteins were significantly decreased in the uterus of Bmal1-/- mice. Thus, these data suggest that Bmal1 in mice promotes PGE2 synthesis by upregulating Ptgs2 in response to increases in E2 on D4 of pregnancy.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Rhythmic expression of Bmal1 and Ptgs2 was observed in the uterus isolated from D3.5-4.5 of pregnant mice. E2 increased the expression of Bmal1 and Ptg2 in UESCs isolated from mice on D4. The expression of Ptgs2 was significantly decreased in Bmal1-siRNA treated UESCs. Bmal1 knockdown also inhibited PGE2 synthesis. Thus, these data suggest that Bmal1 in mice promotes PGE2 synthesis by upregulating Ptgs2 in response to increases in E2 on D4 of pregnancy.

Background Methylxanthine, including caffeine citrate and aminophylline, is the most common pharmacologic treatment for apnea of prematurity. However, due to the lack of high-quality evidence, there are no clear recommendations or guidelines on how to choose between caffeine and aminophylline. Objective This meta-analysis aimed to assess the comparative efficacy and safety of caffeine and aminophylline for apnea of prematurity, and provide reliable evidence for clinical medication in the treatment for apnea of prematurity. Methods PubMed, Scopus, Embase, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were systematically searched from May 1975 to June 2022. Results Ten studies including a total of 923 preterm infants were evaluated. Our results showed that there was no significant difference in the effective rate of 1-3days between caffeine and aminophylline (OR 1.05, 95%CI: 0.40–2.74, P = 0.914). However, for side effects such as tachycardia (OR 0.22, 95%CI: 0.13–0.37, P<0.001) and feeding intolerance (OR 0.40, 95%CI: 0.23–0.70, P = 0.001), the incidence rate was lower in the caffeine group compared with the aminophylline group. No significant difference was found in hyperglycemia (OR 0.45, 95%CI: 0.19–1.05, P = 0.064). Conclusion This meta-analysis reveals that caffeine citrate and aminophylline have similar therapeutic effectiveness on respiratory function, but caffeine has fewer side effects and should be considered first for treatment.

Many sediment attributes have been proposed as proxies for determining salinity conditions under which sediment is deposited, and six attributes (Sr/Ba-HAc, Sr/Ba-NH4Ac, δ13Corg, C/N, and the relative abundances and concentrations of dinoflagellate cysts) are compared here. In this paper, sediment attributes from the Fraser River Delta, Canada and surrounding coastal areas are compared by depositional position along the fluvial-to-marine transition, by sea-surface salinity, and by sedimentological characteristics. Along the fluvial-to-marine transition, most attributes exhibit distinct trends between parts of the river that experience sustained marine water (saltwater) influence over seasonal and tidal timeframes, and parts that experience only freshwater or periodic saltwater influence. No attributes are reliable indicators of depositional position where saltwater incursion is short lived or where water is fresh. Where marine influence is sustained, Sr/Ba-HAc and Sr/Ba-NH4Ac are the most reliable positional indicators along the fluvial-to-marine transition. When compared strictly to salinity, Sr/Ba-HAc, Sr/Ba-NH4Ac, and δ13Corg all correlate predictably except in delta front and prodelta settings. Our data show that all six sediment attributes are heavily impacted by river-derived sedimentation, and it is not appropriate to compare values from strongly river-influenced settings (e.g., deltas) with those from weakly river-influenced settings (e.g., bays and estuaries).

Infertility, abortion, and stillbirth caused by endometritis are the main factors affecting fertility in ruminants. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammation is the main cause of endometritis. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway and pyroptosis play an important role in the inflammation, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Previous studies have reported that UFMylation, a ubiquitin-like post-translational modifier, plays an important regulatory role in inflammation via the TLR4 pathway; however, its relationship with pyroptosis is still unclear. Our result showed that LPS induced inflammation by activating the TLR4 pathway and pyroptosis in goat endometrial epithelial cells (gEECs). We also found that TAK-242,a specific inhibitor of the TLR4 pathway, inhibited the pyroptosis pathway. In addition, with an increased LPS treatment time, ubiquitin-folding modifier factor 1 (UFM1) conjugated proteins were highly expressed in gEECs. Moreover, overexpression of UFM1 inhibited LPS-induced activation of the TLR4 pathway and pyroptosis, whereas si-UFM1 produced contrasting results. After inhibiting the TLR4 pathway, si-UFM1 could not upregulate the expression of nod-like receptor family protein 3 (NLRP3), cleavage caspase-1, or cleavage gasdermin D (GSDMD). In conclusion, these results suggest that UFM1 inhibits pyroptosis activation in LPS-induced gEECs through the TLR4 pathway.
