The combination of a long coastline and a warm and dry climate makes Spain an ideal destination for sun and beach tourism. Beaches are the habitat of many animal species (both permanent and migratory) and they represent an enclave for both recreational and sporting use. Furthermore, they protect the coast from the action of waves and wind caused by sea storms. If this last and key role is adversely affected, for whatever reason, beaches can lose their recreational appeal. Consequently, the financial contribution of sun and beach tourism can be reduced significantly. In this work, it is intended to understand as best as possible the relationship between marine environment and Laredo’s beach, with the goal of reducing the damage that sea floods produce to the city of Laredo. For that purpose, initially, state-of-the-art beach engineering bibliography must be analysed. Once the reading on that matter is done, a methodology proposal needs to be suggested and the required data compilation should be completed. Then, the temporal variability of the morphodynamical state of the beach must be analysed. As the analysis concludes that the beach has a bidimensional behaviour, the next step consists in studying the stability of the beach relying on a predictive equilibrium beach profile model. Subsequently, the results of the second analysis are meant to be used in a flood forecasting system. The second analysis which is based on the equilibrium beach profile model, produces relationships between the dimensionless fall velocity (parameter which encompasses the most important characteristics defining a marine climate and the grain size) and four equilibrium profile shape coefficients (A, B, C and D). These relationships define the Laredo’s beach profile according to the dimensionless fall velocity of the previous month. The expressions generated thanks to the second analysis mean an advance in the process to prepare a flood forecasting system for the city of Laredo, because they will allow to apply numerical model or empirical formulations to get the run-up in a profile which is variable over time (not in a static one as it has been done until now).
