Different auxetic structures and auxetic phenomena are continuously explored by researchers in the field of textiles with enhanced properties for broader application areas. However, developing three-dimensional (3D) auxetic structures by using weaving technology is a real challenge compared to knitting and non-weaving techniques. This research work reports a novel approach to develop 3D woven structures with in-plane auxetic behavior. A conventional 3D multilayer orthogonal through-the-thickness structure was converted into a 3D auxetic woven structure. The structure was designed with three different yarn components to incorporate auxetic geometry. One type of yarn was used in the warp direction, while the other two-yarn systems, comprised of fine elastic yarn and coarse binding yarn, were used in the weft direction. The auxetic geometry achieved resembles the reentrant hexagon by the unusual arrangement of warp yarns. For an in-depth study of the structure, nine fabric samples were fabricated by using a conventional semi-automatic weaving machine with four different influencing parameters. The developed samples were then tested on a tensile testing machine to evaluate their mechanical and auxetic behavior. The results show that the 3D fabrics have a negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) even at higher tensile strain and that the appropriate binding to the warp yarn diameter can produce a higher NPR. In addition, the repeat size of the elastic weft yarn, bending stiffness of the binding yarn, and stretch percentage of the elastic weft yarn can highly affect the NPR of the fabric. Furthermore, among all the 3D woven fabrics developed with different structural parameters, the maximum NPR achieved was –1.61.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the efficacy of absorbent textiles for incontinence (ATI) in managing post-voiding dribble (PVD) in older men. In this systematic review, a literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies using PubMed, Science Direct, and Cochrane Library databases from 2010 to 2020. The search included clinical trials and studies that evaluated the use of disposable or reusable ATI in managing PVD or urinary incontinence in older men. The quality assessment was done using Joanna Brigg's randomized controlled trial inventory method. Data was extracted from those studies meeting the quality criteria for meta-analysis. A total of 352 articles were found in the initial database search and an additional 18 articles were selected through a hand search based on the inclusion criteria. After the assessment, only two studies meeting the quality criteria were included in the data extraction. The results of the meta-analysis showed that ATI improved the psychological and physical aspects of quality of life, while urisheaths reduced the daily consumption and number of leaks of incontinence. In connection with ATI, disposable underpads can significantly lower the development of hospital acquired pressure injuries and hospital length of stay, while disposable or reusable underpads had no significant influence on the development of incontinence-associated dermatitis.

This paper reports a geometrical analysis of auxetic woven fabrics based on foldable geometry. Two fabrics having different geometrical parameters were first designed and fabricated and then subjected to tensile tests in two principal directions. Based on the experimental observations of the geometry of one fabric structural unit cell at different tensile strains, a geometrical model was first proposed and a relationship between the Poisson’s ratio and tensile strain was then established for each principal direction. Two semi-empirical equations are subsequently obtained for both principal directions by fitting the established relationships with experimental results. After validation by the experimental results of the other fabric, the obtained semi-empirical equations were finally used to predict the auxetic behavior of the fabric with a given geometrical parameter. The calculated and experimental results are found to be in excellent agreement with each other. Therefore, the semi-empirical equations obtained in this study could be useful in the design and prediction of the auxetic behavior of auxetic woven fabrics made with the same type of materials and foldable geometry but with different values of geometrical parameters.

Auxetic woven fabrics made with special geometrical structures have gained the interest of textile scientists in recent years. This paper reports a study on auxetic woven fabric based on a double-directional parallel in-phase zig-zag foldable geometrical structure. Such a fabric has been already produced and investigated for its negative Poisson's ratio effect in two principal directions (weft and warp directions). However, its negative Poisson's ratio effect in biased tensile directions as well as under repeated tensile loading conditions has not been studied yet. Therefore, in this paper, these two limitations are addressed. The auxetic woven fabric was firstly fabricated, and then subjected not only to tensile tests in different tensile directions, including two principle directions and three biased directions, but also to repeated tensile loading. It was found that both the negative Poisson's ratio effect and the resistance to tensile deformation are dependent upon the tensile direction, and the highest negative Poisson's ratio effect and higher resistance to tensile deformation are obtained in two principal directions.

Stretch woven fabrics are known for their elastic and recovery properties. To date, they found many interesting applications from simple jeans to complex fabric structures with functional properties for example bi-stretch auxetic woven fabrics, compressions garments and stretchable textile carriers for healthcare applications. Many studies have been carried out on the physical, mechanical and comfort properties of stretchable knitted and woven fabrics. However, to identify combination of yarns with different stretch properties and other design parameters required to meet multiple objectives in the production and usage of bi-stretch woven fabrics is an area that has been taken up by fabric scientists recently. This study compared the effect of using elastic yarns and alternate elastic and non-elastic yarns in warp on the properties of bi-stretch woven fabrics while using elastic yarns in weft direction. It was found that shrinkage of the fabrics made of elastic yarns was higher along the warp direction as compared to that in weft direction due to shrinkage balancing effect; however, in case of fabrics made of alternate elastic and non-elastic yarns in warp the shrinkage behavior was exact opposite. The comparison of shrinkage for different weave patterns revealed that satin had the highest shrinkage followed by twill and plain, due to least number of interlacements in satin among these three patterns.

Auxetic woven fabrics made of non-auxetic yarns have gained the interest of textile scientists in recent times. Such fabrics have already been produced and investigated for their negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect in two principle directions. However, the NPR effect of these fabrics in different biased tensile directions has not been studied. In particular, the influence of repeated tensile loading on the NPR effect retention ability of fabric has not been explored yet. Therefore, this paper aims to report the NPR effect of auxetic woven fabric in different tensile directions and the influence of repeating tensile cycle tests on its NPR effect retention ability. The auxetic woven fabric is firstly fabricated based on a re-entrant hexagonal geometrical structure by using elastic and non-elastic yarns, and then subjected to single and repeating tensile tests in five different tensile directions, which include two principle directions and three biased directions. It is found that the NPR effect is largely dependent upon the tensile direction and the number of repeating tensile cycles.

Then, the fabric was subjected to tensile tests, and changes in the geometry of the fabric structural unit cell at different tensile strains were observed when stretched either in the warp or weft direction. Based on the observations, a geometrical model was proposed for each stretch direction and used to establish the relationship between Poisson’s ratio and tensile strain. The semi-empirical equations for both stretch directions were finally obtained by fitting geometrical parameters with experimental results. It is expected that the semi-empirical equations obtained in this study could be used in the design and prediction of the auxetic behavior of bi-stretch auxetic woven fabrics made with the same type of materials and geometry, but with different values of geometrical parameters.

Fabrics with zero or negative Poisson’s ratio are referred as auxetic fabrics, which have the unusual property of lateral expansion or zero expansion upon stretch. The use of conventional materials and machinery to produce auxetic fabrics has gained the interest of researchers in recent years. However, this approach is limited to knitted fabrics only. The development of auxetic fabric using conventional yarns and weaving technology is a research area that is still unaddressed. This paper reports a study on the development of a novel class of stretchable auxetic woven fabrics by using conventional yarns and weaving machinery. The phenomenon of differential shrinkage was successfully employed to realize auxetic geometries capable of inducing auxetic behavior in woven fabrics, and a series of auxetic woven fabrics were fabricated with elastic and non-elastic yarns and a dobby machine. The uni-axial tensile tests showed that auxetic woven fabrics developed exhibited zero or negative Poisson’s ratio over a wide range of longitudinal strain.

Textile structures have become quite popular as reinforcement materials in composite laminates due to their high impact-damage tolerance and energy absorption ability. The impact performance of textile composites is not only affected by the type of fiber/ matrix but also by the fabric structure used as reinforcement. The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical and ballistic performance of composite laminates reinforced with single-layer and double-layer interlocked woven fabrics. Kevlar V R 229 multifilament yarn was used for preparation of all the fabric structures and epoxy resin was used as the matrix system. The composites were produced using a hand lay-up method, followed by compression molding. The mechanical and ballistic performance of composites reinforced with single-layer and double-layer interlocked woven fabrics was investigated in this study. The energy absorption and mechanical failure behavior of composites during the impact event were found to be strongly affected by the weave design of the reinforcement. The composites reinforced with doublelayer interlocked woven fabrics were found to perform better than those comprising single-layer fabrics in terms of impact energy absorption and mechanical failure. Auxetic textiles are materials which possess negative Poisson’s ratio, this implies that in contrast to conventional textile materials if they are stretched in longitudinal direction, a marginal expansion will results in transversal direction. Auxetic textile materials have become a point of focus for many researchers in recent past years. This paper reviews the achievements in the area of auxetic textile materials including fibres, yarns, fabrics and textile reinforcements for composite applications. It is aimed that this review will be helpful for future advancement in the area of auxetic textile materials.
