1. Expansion of the Grassland Biome in the eastern Karoo corresponds with changes in rainfall and livestock numbers

Abstract

The persistent spread of shrublands is a global phenomenon observed across semiarid grassland-shrubland boundaries. Observations in South Africa, however, have detected a contrasting trend of increasing grass cover across the transition between the Nama-Karoo and Grassland Biomes over the last few decades. A west-to-east gradient of increasing mean annual rainfall, and underlying geology, controls the natural transition of Karoo dwarf shrublands to semiarid grasslands. The availability of historical vegetation surveys and landscape photographs, weather, and livestock census records, made it possible to assess the nature, extent, and drivers of vegetation change across this biome transition. Rainfall has been generally higher over the last four decades compared to the years prior to the original surveys. This, together with a reduction in livestock numbers, is the main driver of the westward expansion by ∼100 km of perennial grasses, and a general increase in dwarf shrub and total vegetation cover. Rangeland condition, as indexed by estimates of grazing capacity, has improved significantly. Despite a structural shift towards grassland-dominance, the original species complement has persisted. The rainfall-driven increase in grass fuel loads in the region, however, places these rangelands at risk of becoming altered by increasing fire frequency.

Abstract

Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most common muscular dystrophy in adult life characterized by muscle dysfunction and cardiac conduction abnormalities. Atrial fibrillation frequently occurs in DM1 patients. It's related to the discontinuous and inhomogeneous propagation of sinus impulses and to the prolongation of atrial conduction time, caused by progressive fibrosis and fatty replacement of the myocardium. AF predisposes to a hyper-coagulable state and to an increased risk of thromboembolism. We report the first case of complete resolution of left atrial appendage thrombosis with oral dabigatran etexilate in a myotonic dystrophy type I patient with atrial fibrillation scheduled for transesophageal echocardiogram-guided direct current cardioversion.

Abstract

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from −9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. Abstract

With the Spectro-Polarimetric High- contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument at ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) we can study the linear polarisation of directly detected planets and brown dwarfs, to learn about their atmospheres and immediate environments. We summarise here the recent discovery of a low-mass companion in polarised light by Ginski et al. (2018). The object shows an extreme degree of polarisation, indicating the presence of a circumplanetary disc., Published in The Messenger vol. 172, pp. 27-31, June 2018.

Abstract

Aims Patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) who are managed without coronary revascularization represent a mixed and understudied population that seems to receive suboptimal pharmacological treatment. Methods and results We assessed patterns of antithrombotic therapies employed during the hospitalization and in-hospital clinical events of medically managed patients with ACS enrolled in the prospective, multicentre, nationwide EYESHOT (EmploYEd antithrombotic therapies in patients with acute coronary Syndromes HOspitalized in iTalian cardiac care units) registry. Among the 2585 consecutive ACS patients enrolled in EYESHOT, 783 (30.3%) did not receive any revascularization during hospital admission. Of these, 478 (61.0%) underwent coronary angiography (CA), whereas 305 (39.0%) did not. The median GRACE and CRUSADE risk scores were significantly higher among patients who did not undergo CA compared with those who did (180 vs. 145, P < 0.0001 and 50 vs. 33, P < 0.0001, respectively). Antithrombotic therapies employed during hospitalization significantly differ between patients who received CA and those who did not with unfractioned heparin and novel P2Y12 inhibitors more frequently used in the first group, and low-molecular-weight heparins and clopidogrel in the latter group. During the index hospitalization, patients who did not receive CA presented a higher incidence of ischaemic cerebrovascular events and of mortality compared with those who underwent CA (1.6 vs. 0.2%, P = 0.04 and 7.9 vs. 2.7%, P = 0.0009, respectively). Conclusion Almost one-third of ACS patients are managed without revascularization during the index hospitalization. In this population, a lower use of recommended antiplatelet therapy and worse clinical outcome were observed in those who did not undergo CA when compared with those who did. Abstract

Acquired haemophilia A (AHA) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by the development of specific autoantibodies against naturally occurring factor VIII (FVIII). Although about half of cases are idiopathic, AHA may be associated with several non-neoplastic conditions, autoimmune disorders, as well as haematological malignancies, such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and lymphoma. The long-term suppression of inhibitors is one of the mainstays of the treatment of AHA. Apart from standard immunosuppressive treatments, rituximab has been proven to be effective in AHA.

Abstract

Aims In the last decades, several new therapies have emerged for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). We sought to describe real-world patterns of use of antithrombotic treatments in the catheterization laboratory for ACS patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Methods EmploYEd antithrombotic therapies in patients with acute coronary Syndromes HOspitalized in iTalian cardiac care units was a nationwide, prospective registry aimed to evaluate antithrombotic strategies employed in ACS patients in Italy. Results Over a 3-week period, a total of 2585 consecutive ACS patients have been enrolled in 203 cardiac care units across Italy. Among these patients, 1755 underwent PCI (923 with ST-elevation myocardial infarction and 832 with non-ST-elevation ACS). In the catheterization laboratory, unfractioned heparin was the most used antithrombotic drug in both ST-elevation myocardial infarction (64.7%) and non-ST-elevation ACS (77.5%) undergoing PCI and, as aspirin, bivalirudin and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPIs) more frequently employed before or during PCI compared with the postprocedural period. Any crossover of heparin therapy occurred in 36.0% of cases, whereas switching from one P2Y12 inhibitor to another occurred in 3.7% of patients. Multivariable analysis yielded several independent predictors of GPIs and of bivalirudin use in the catheterization laboratory, mainly related to clinical presentation, PCI complexity and presence of complications during the procedure. Conclusion In our contemporary, nationwide, all-comers cohort of ACS patients undergoing PCI, antithrombotic therapies were commonly initiated before the catheterization laboratory. In the periprocedural period, the most frequently employed drugs were unfractioned heparin, leading to a high rate of crossover, followed by GPIs and bivalirudin, mainly used during complex PCI. Abstract

Background. P53, a crucial suppressor of tumor formation, generates multiple isoforms, whose role in disease is still being defined. Methods. By immunohistochemistry, we studied the expression of P53 protein and relative isoforms in benign papillomas (PA, n=9), inverted papilloma (IPA, n=10) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC, n=21). Results. In all lesions, P53 isoforms were significantly more expressed than P53. Immunoexpression of P53 matched with P53 isoforms in IPA as well as in SCC. Simultaneous immunoexpression of P53 and related isoforms was double in SCC compared to IPA (10% vs 24%), while expression of P53 isoforms was strongly reduced (70% vs 43%). IPA showed the highest percentage of both reactive cases and immunostained cells expressing P53 isoforms. Conclusions. We found the higher expression of P53 isoforms in IPA and SCC compared to PA, suggesting their role in local aggressiveness and malignant proliferation in head-neck lesions.

Abstract

In ischaemic stroke, thrombolytic drugs speed the recanalisation of intracerebral arteries. The effects of aspirin are not known. A trial was conducted to determine whether, separately or together, streptokinase and aspirin have clinical benefits in acute ischaemic stroke similar to those in acute myocardial infarction. 622 patients with acute ischaemic stroke within 6 hours of symptom onset were randomised with a 2x2 factorial design to (i) a 1-hour intravenous infusion of 1 . 5 MU streptokinase, (ii) 300 mg/day buffered aspirin for 10 days, (iii) both active treatments, or (iv) neither. Early results raised a question whether the trial should be continued. Abstract

Sea ice surrounding the Antarctic continent varies in extent from 4 x 106 km2 in summer to 20 x 106 km2 in winter, representing one of the largest and most dynamic ecosystems on Earth. Annual primary production in the Antarctic sea ice has been estimated between 30 and 70 tg C; up to 400 mg Chla m-2 and 1g C m-2 d-1 of sea-ice autotrophic biomass and primary production, respectively, have been recorded similar to the values reported in ice-free waters of the most productive oceanic regions. Several forcing factors such as temperature, precipitation, wind and local circulation play a synergic role on the formation of different types of sea ice e.g.: annual, multiannual, platelet-ice. In turn, different structures and physical-chemical features of the sea ice strongly influence the ecology of organisms trapped by or colonising the sea ice. We investigated differences in structural and functional properties of the pack- and platelet-ice sympagic communities in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) that occurred in spring-summer of 1997, 1999 and 2004. We analysed the variability in nutrient dynamics and physiological parameters of sympagic algae, phytoplankton biomass, photosynthetic pigment spectra, sea-ice meiofauna, micro- and mesozooplankton biodiversity as well as the quantity, composition and degradation rates of particulate organic matter (POM) and bacterial secondary production. Temporal changes in inorganic nutrients and DOM concentrations in the bottom ice increased contemporarily with a sharp increase in autotrophic biomass. The bottom sympagic flora was mainly represented by cryobenthic species, whilst the cryopelagic population was confined to the pack-platelet ice interface; diatoms dominated the sympagic communities. Bacterial production in the platelet layer was much higher than in the bottom layer. In addition, when the autotrophic biomass of the bottom ice reached its maximum, a dramatic drop of the bacterial production was observed, a phenomenon which did not occur in the platelet ice. The zooplankton community in the intact sea ice was largely dominated by copepods, Stephos longipes and Harpacticus furcifer, that accounted for more than 90% of the sympagic fauna. Interannual changes in POM composition and bacterial variables were limited, whereas the largest differences occurred between the two types of investigated sea ice. In contrast, notable differences in sea-ice autotrophic biomass and biodiversity occurred from one year to the other and pronounced spatial and temporal variability was observed for the zooplankton populations.

We anticipate potential order of magnitude improvements in fuel cell performance can be achieved through concerted design efforts focussed on the exploitation of micro-scale phenomena for fuel cell systems design.

Abstract

Human embryonal carcinoma Ntera2/D1 (NT2) cells treated with retinoic acid (RA) differentiate into several cell types including post-mitotic neurons. In this study we asked if RA-induced differentiation alters the expression of RA and retinol (ROL) binding proteins. The regulation of the intracellular carrier proteins for ROL and RA, cellular retinol binding protein I (CRBP-I), and cellular retinoic acid binding protein I and II (CRABP-I, CRABP-II) were studied along with the nuclear RA receptors RARalpha, RARbeta and RARgamma2. PCR analysis of total mRNA from RA-treated cells showed a biphasic early induction of CRBP-I, CRABP-II, and RARgamma2 genes. The immediate early gene Krox-24, a zinc finger transcription factor which is up-regulated during neuronal differentiation, was also induced, but after 1 week of treatment. The induction of CRBP-I protein synthesis in differentiating NT2 cells was confirmed by western blotting and immunofluorescence experiments. Conversely, the synthetic retinoid N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide, which induces cell death, but not differentiation in different tumour cell types, did not produce the same modulation on gene expression in NT2 cells. These data suggest that the RA-specific induction of CRBP-I and CRABP-II could be an early event in the process leading to neuronal differentiation of NT2 cells.

Abstract

Residue analyses are very important in the quality control of citrus essential oils. Organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides, phosphorated plasticizers and chloroparaffins contamination were investigated by HRGC with FPD and ECD detectors in 120 citrus essential oils produced in Italy and in 70 from other countries in the crop year 2006-2007. Results showed that the largest pesticide quantities were found in oils from Brazil and Spain. The presence of such residues might be the result of an improper use of pesticide in citrus growing or of previous contamination of the extractors. However, the pesticide levels showed a measurable decrease in relation to past production years. The absence of phosporated plasticizers and chloroparaffins can be the result of either improvement of the procedures used during the production cycle or in the storage of the essential oils compared with previous years.
