We address the problem of learning linear system models from observing multiple trajectories from different system dynamics. This framework encompasses a collaborative scenario where several systems seeking to estimate their dynamics are partitioned into clusters according to their system similarity. Thus, the systems within the same cluster can benefit from the observations made by the others. Considering this framework, we present an algorithm where each system alternately estimates its cluster identity and performs an estimation of its dynamics. This is then aggregated to update the model of each cluster. We show that under mild assumptions, our algorithm correctly estimates the cluster identities and achieves an approximate sample complexity that scales inversely with the number of systems in the cluster, thus facilitating a more efficient and personalized system identification process.

In an earlier paper we supplied an indirect proof of the existence of universal possible worlds that have the topological property of being hypercyclic, which means they can access every world in sequences of worlds that approach arbitrarily closely to every possible world. That proof states that there are universal worlds but it does not exhibit such a world explicitly. We now explicitly construct two such universal worlds. A continuous universal world constructs possible worlds with transreal co-ordinates directly. A discrete world provides a binary hypercyclic vector which can be used to create transfloating-point co-ordinates that approximate transreal co-ordinates. We also discuss the philosophical implications of universal worlds for an omniscient observer and human science.

We present results from the first 22 GHz space very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) imaging observations of M87 by RadioAstron. As a part of the Nearby AGN Key Science Program, the source was observed in Feb 2014 at 22 GHz with 21 ground stations, reaching projected $(u,v)$-spacings up to $\sim11\,$G$\lambda$. The imaging experiment was complemented by snapshot RadioAstron data of M87 obtained during 2013--2016 from the AGN Survey Key Science Program. Their longest baselines extend up to $\sim25\,$G$\lambda$. For all these measurements, fringes are detected only up to $\sim$2.8 Earth Diameter or $\sim$3 G$\lambda$ baseline lengths, resulting in a new image with angular resolution of $\sim150\,\mu$as or $\sim20$ Schwarzschild radii spatial resolution. The new image not only shows edge-brightened jet and counterjet structures down to submilliarcsecond scales but also clearly resolves the VLBI core region. While the overall size of the core is comparable to those reported in the literature, the ground-space fringe detection and slightly super-resolved RadioAstron image suggest the presence of substructures in the nucleus, whose minimum brightness temperature exceeds $T_{\rm B, min}\sim10^{12}\,$K. It is challenging to explain the origin of this record-high $T_{\rm B, min}$ value for M87 by pure Doppler boosting effect with a simple conical jet geometry and known jet speed. Therefore, this can be evidence for more extreme Doppler boosting due to a blazar-like small jet viewing angle or highly efficient particle acceleration processes occurring already at the base of the outflow., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Graph signal processing (GSP) has emerged as a powerful tool for practical network applications, including power system monitoring. By representing power system voltages as smooth graph signals, recent research has focused on developing GSP-based methods for state estimation, attack detection, and topology identification. Included, efficient methods have been developed for detecting false data injection (FDI) attacks, which until now were perceived as non-smooth with respect to the graph Laplacian matrix. Consequently, these methods may not be effective against smooth FDI attacks. In this paper, we propose a graph FDI (GFDI) attack that minimizes the Laplacian-based graph total variation (TV) under practical constraints. In addition, we develop a low-complexity algorithm that solves the non-convex GDFI attack optimization problem using ell_1-norm relaxation, the projected gradient descent (PGD) algorithm, and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We then propose a protection scheme that identifies the minimal set of measurements necessary to constrain the GFDI output to high graph TV, thereby enabling its detection by existing GSP-based detectors. Our numerical simulations on the IEEE-57 bus test case reveal the potential threat posed by well-designed GSP-based FDI attacks. Moreover, we demonstrate that integrating the proposed protection design with GSP-based detection can lead to significant hardware cost savings compared to previous designs of protection methods against FDI attacks., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. The urgent need for the decarbonization of power girds has accelerated the integration of renewable energy. Concurrently the increasing distributed energy resources (DER) and advanced metering infrastructures (AMI) have transformed the power grids into a more sophisticated cyber-physical system with numerous communication devices. While these transitions provide economic and environmental value, they also impose increased risk of cyber attacks and operational challenges. This paper investigates the vulnerability of the power grids with high renewable penetration against an intraday false data injection (FDI) attack on DER dispatch signals and proposes a kernel support vector regression (SVR) based detection model as a countermeasure. The intraday FDI attack scenario and the detection model are demonstrated in a numerical experiment using the HCE 187-bus test system.

Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollob\'{a}s showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. Thlaspi arvense (field pennycress) is being domesticated as a winter annual oilseed crop capable of improving ecosystems and intensifying agricultural productivity without increasing land use. It is a selfing diploid with a short life cycle and is amenable to genetic manipulations, making it an accessible field-based model species for genetics and epigenetics. The availability of a high-quality reference genome is vital for understanding pennycress physiology and for clarifying its evolutionary history within the Brassicaceae. Here, we present a chromosome-level genome assembly of var. MN106-Ref with improved gene annotation and use it to investigate gene structure differences between two accessions (MN108 and Spring32-10) that are highly amenable to genetic transformation. We describe non-coding RNAs, pseudogenes and transposable elements, and highlight tissue-specific expression and methylation patterns. Resequencing of forty wild accessions provided insights into genome-wide genetic variation, and QTL regions were identified for a seedling colour phenotype. BackgroundIdentifying preterm infants at risk for mortality or major morbidity traditionally relies on gestational age, birth weight, and other clinical characteristics that offer underwhelming utility. We sought to determine whether a newborn metabolic vulnerability profile at birth can be used to evaluate risk for neonatal mortality and major morbidity in preterm infants.MethodsThis was a population-based retrospective cohort study of preterm infants born between 2005 and 2011 in California. We created a newborn metabolic vulnerability profile wherein maternal/infant characteristics along with routine newborn screening metabolites were evaluated for their association with neonatal mortality or major morbidity.ResultsNine thousand six hundred and thirty-nine (9.2%) preterm infants experienced mortality or at least one complication. Six characteristics and 19 metabolites were included in the final metabolic vulnerability model. The model demonstrated exceptional performance for the composite outcome of mortality or any major morbidity (AUC 0.923 (95% CI: 0.917-0.929). Performance was maintained across mortality and morbidity subgroups (AUCs 0.893-0.979).ConclusionsMetabolites measured as part of routine newborn screening can be used to create a metabolic vulnerability profile. These findings lay the foundation for targeted clinical monitoring and further investigation of biological pathways that may increase the risk of neonatal death or major complications in infants born preterm.ImpactWe built a newborn metabolic vulnerability profile that could identify preterm infants at risk for major morbidity and mortality. Identifying high-risk infants by this method is novel to the field and outperforms models currently in use that rely primarily on infant characteristics. Utilizing the newborn metabolic vulnerability profile for precision clinical monitoring and targeted investigation of etiologic pathways could lead to reductions in the incidence and severity of major morbidities associated with preterm birth.

We present a robust Distributed and Localized Model Predictive Control (rDLMPC) framework for large-scale structured linear systems. The proposed algorithm uses the System Level Synthesis to provide a distributed closed-loop model predictive control scheme that is robust to exogenous disturbances. The resulting controllers require only local information exchange for both synthesis and implementation. We exploit the fact that for polytopic disturbance constraints, SLS- based distributed control problems have been shown to have structure amenable for distributed optimization techniques. We show that similar to the disturbance-free DLMPC algorithm, the computational complexity of rDLMPC is independent of the size of the global system. Now we seek a deeper foundation by adopting a paraconsistent transet theory, with unlimited comprehension, that totalises the whole of mathematics.A transet is partitioned into four parts: an inside, corresponding to the members of a set; an outside, corresponding to the members of the complement of a set; a border, corresponding to antinomies or gluts of the usual set theories; and a background corresponding to the gaps of the usual set theories. We construct the usual set antinomies as transets. Thus we obtain the Russell Antinomy as the transet of all transets that do not contain themselves and we obtain the greatest ordinal as the antinomous transet of all von Neumann ordinals. We discuss how the insides of these transets can be aserted as oracles in Zermelo Fraenkel set theory, without (ZF) or with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC).We observe that the Trans-Dedekind Cuts are transets, whence transreal nullity, being the unordered transordinal, is the transet with an empty inside and outside and all other transets in its background. Similarly, transordinal infinity is the transet with all non-terminal von Neumann ordinals in its inside, an empty outside and border, and all other transets in its background. Thus we obtain the set of transordinal numbers which we can assert, as an oracle, in ZF and ZFC. In theory, forensic science provides objective, dispassionate evidence in criminal justice proceedings often charged with emotion, cognitive biases, and the failings of human recollection. By being theoretically objective and independent from other actors and processes in the criminal justice process, forensic science has the potential to make the criminal process more reliable by reducing both wrongful convictions and unsolved crimes. \ud \ud But how does it work in practice? Its leading role in many wrongful convictions suggests caution. To better understand the actual role of forensic science, we collected data on the prevalence and use of forensic evidence in five jurisdictions in multiple stages of the criminal process. We also analyzed existing data on crime labs and conducted an experimental survey of prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys to measure the effect of forensic evidence on the plea-bargaining process.\ud \ud Our findings are sobering. While forensic evidence is regularly in homicide cases, it is(still) being analyzed in only a small fraction of cases in which it is available. In those few cases, its use is highly limited by resource constraints, resulting in long turnaround times for less serious offenses, which encourage police and prosecutors to rely on other types of evidence. When it is used, it is often tested late in the criminal process, sometimes to meet juror expectations. While an understandable reaction to limited forensic resources, this late timing may lead to both unsolved crimes and pressure to conform to pre existing theories of guilt.\ud \ud Despite the theoretical potential of forensic science to improve the reliability of the criminal process, the way it is actually used squanders many of its advantages. As a result, the potential of forensic evidence to improve the criminal process remains largely unrealized.

While a large number of studies have investigated seafood consumption in various markets, surprisingly little is known about the types of seafood sold in retail outlets or their product forms in the USA. This is particularly true for fresh seafood, which is generally regarded as the most valuable product form of seafood. In this article, a unique dataset on retail in-store seafood sales that includes information about three main product forms (fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable products) was analyzed. Fresh seafood is important, as it makes up 43% of sales revenue. Moreover, some species are almost exclusively sold fresh, with trout and lobster as prime examples. Fresh also includes the greatest diversity of species and, as such, is the most likely product form for new producers to succeed. National sales are dominated by a few species, with salmon and shrimp accounting for a large portion of the fresh (27%) and frozen categories (43%), respectively, and tuna dominating the shelf-stable category (75%). There are also a large number of species with mostly small market shares. There are few differences in regional sales patterns for the main species, with notable exceptions such as whitefish in New England and crawfish in Louisiana and Texas. The degree of urbanization and income level appears as the important drivers for seafood sales. Tripping is a common cause of falls across different age populations particularly in older adults. Concerns regarding the validity of simulated-fall research protocols reside in the current literature. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel treadmill-based tripping protocol that allowed researchers to deliver unanticipated tripping perturbations during walking with a high level of timing precision. The protocol utilized a side-by-side split-belt treadmill instrumented with force platforms. Treadmill belt acceleration profiles (two levels of perturbation severity: small perturbation vs large perturbation) were delivered unilaterally when the tripped leg bore 20% of the body weight during early stance. Peak trunk flexion angle during trip recovery was the primary variable used to represent the fall recovery response and likelihood of falls. Test-retest reliability of the fall responses was examined in a group of 10 young participants; validity was examined through differentiation of the fall responses between young and older adults (age 20.9 vs. 57.1 years, n=10 per group). We found that the perturbations were precisely delivered during the early stance phase (10-45 ms after initial contact). Moreover, this protocol elicited excellent reliability of recovery responses during both perturbation severities (ICC=0.944 and 0.911). Older adults exhibited significantly greater peak trunk flexion angle than young adults (p=0.035), indicating the current protocol was valid in differentiating individuals with different levels of fall risks. This novel protocol addressed some of the issues of previous simulated-fall protocols and may be useful as a tool for future fall research and clinical intervention.

We consider the problem of how to deploy a controller to a (networked) cyber-physical system (CPS). Controlling a CPS is an involved task, and synthesizing a controller to respect sensing, actuation, and communication constraints is only part of the challenge. In addition to controller synthesis, one should also consider how the controller will be incorporated within the CPS. Put another way, the cyber layer and its interaction with the physical layer need to be taken into account. In this work, we aim to bridge the gap between theoretical controller synthesis and practical CPS deployment. We adopt the system level synthesis (SLS) framework to synthesize a controller, either state-feedback or output-feedback, and provide deployment architectures for the standard SLS controllers. Furthermore, we derive new controller realizations for open-loop stable systems and introduce different state-feedback and output-feedback architectures for deployment, ranging from fully centralized to fully distributed. Distributed linear control design is crucial for large-scale cyber-physical systems. It is generally desirable to both impose information exchange (communication) constraints on the distributed controller, and to limit the propagation of disturbances to a local region without cascading to the global network (localization). Recently proposed System Level Synthesis (SLS) theory provides a framework where such communication and localization requirements can be tractably incorporated in controller design and implementation. In this work, we derive a solution to the localized and distributed H2 state feedback control problem without resorting to Finite Impulse Response (FIR) approximation. Our proposed synthesis algorithm allows a column-wise decomposition of the resulting convex program, and is therefore scalable to arbitrary large-scale networks. Transformative technologies are enabling the construction of three-dimensional maps of tissues with unprecedented spatial and molecular resolution. Over the next seven years, the NIH Common Fund Human Biomolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) intends to develop a widely accessible framework for comprehensively mapping the human body at single-cell resolution by supporting technology development, data acquisition, and detailed spatial mapping. HuBMAP will integrate its efforts with other funding agencies, programs, consortia, and the biomedical research community at large towards the shared vision of a comprehensive, accessible three-dimensional molecular and cellular atlas of the human body, in health and under various disease conditions.

Key messageA high-resolution genetic map combined with haplotype analyses identified a wheat ortholog of rice gene APO1 as the best candidate gene for a 7AL locus affecting spikelet number per spike. A better understanding of the genes controlling differences in wheat grain yield components can accelerate the improvements required to satisfy future food demands. In this study, we identified a promising candidate gene underlying a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on wheat chromosome arm 7AL regulating spikelet number per spike (SNS). We used large heterogeneous inbred families ( > 10,000 plants) from two crosses to map the 7AL QTL to an 87-kb region (674,019,191-674,106,327bp, RefSeq v1.0) containing two complete and two partial genes. In this region, we found three major haplotypes that were designated as H1, H2 and H3. The H2 haplotype contributed the high-SNS allele in both H1 × H2 and H2 × H3 segregating populations. The ancestral H3 haplotype is frequent in wild emmer (48%) but rare (~ 1%) in cultivated wheats. By contrast, the H1 and H2 haplotypes became predominant in modern cultivated durum and common wheat, respectively. Among the four candidate genes, only TraesCS7A02G481600 showed a non-synonymous polymorphism that differentiated H2 from the other two haplotypes. This gene, designated here as WHEAT ORTHOLOG OF APO1 (WAPO1), is an ortholog of the rice gene ABERRANT PANICLE ORGANIZATION 1 (APO1), which affects spikelet number. Taken together, the high-resolution genetic map, the association between polymorphisms in the different mapping populations with differences in SNS, and the known role of orthologous genes in other grass species suggest that WAPO-A1 is the most likely candidate gene for the 7AL SNS QTL among the four genes identified in the candidate gene region.

High concentration oxygen therapy in patients with hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with increased mortality. In COPD patients at risk of hypercapnia, guidelines recommend oxygen therapy titrated to achieve oxygen saturation 88-92%. We investigated the association between adherence to guidelines and in-hospital adverse events.The study population comprised 117 patients (56% male, mean age 75 years) who experienced 161 admissions. Adverse events occurred in 39 (25%) of 157 admissions with data, comprising 12 deaths (6 had new acidosis), 16 new-onset acidosis episodes and 11 respiratory-related MET responses. Over-oxygenation occurred in 86% of admissions. The oxygen target was specified for 82% of admissions. Without oxygen target specification, 11/29 (38%) had adverse outcomes compared to 22% when specified. Duration of exposure to over-oxygenation was associated with adverse outcomes (p=0.001).
