The need to reduce the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of fuels and lubricants has renewed interest in hydroisomerization processes. Here it is shown how recognizing the signature of individual alkane hydrocracking pathways enables delineating changes to the alkane hydroisomerization and hydrocracking networks as a function of catalyst pore topology. Spacious pores allow indiscriminate access to both kinetically favored alpha,alpha,gamma-trialkyl alkane hydrocracking pathways and thermodynamically favored alpha,alpha- and alpha,gamma-dialkyl alkane hydrocracking pathways. Narrower pores enhance isomerization by slowing down access to the kinetically favored hydrocracking pathways. The narrowest pores enhance isomerization further by narrowing down the remaining hydrocracking pathways: MTT-and TON-type zeolites limit hydrocracking to only a low concentration of the few isomers that are commensurate with their respective topologies. This improved understanding of how catalyst pore topologies impact hydroconversion networks is guiding the design of more carbon efficient industrial hydroisomerization processes.

Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) represent an important class of indoor pollutants. The partitioning of SVOCs between airborne particles and the adjacent air influences human exposure and uptake. Presently, little direct experimental evidence exists about the influence of indoor particle pollution on the gas-particle phase partitioning of indoor SVOCs. In this study, we present time-resolved gas- and particle-phase distribution data for indoor SVOCs in a normally occupied residence using semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography. Although SVOCs in indoor air are found mostly in the gas phase, we show that indoor particles from cooking, candle use, and outdoor particle infiltration strongly affect the gas-particle phase distribution of specific indoor SVOCs. From gas- and particle-phase measurements of SVOCs spanning a range of chemical functionalities (alkanes, alcohols, alkanoic acids, and phthalates) and volatilities (vapor pressures from 10-13 to 10-4 atm), we find that the chemical composition of the airborne particles influences the partitioning of individual SVOC species. During candle burning, the enhanced partitioning of gas-phase SVOCs to indoor particles not only affects the particle composition but also enhances surface off-gassing, thereby increasing the total airborne concentration of specific SVOCs, including diethylhexyl phthalate.

A solid phase extraction procedure (SPE) is described for the quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric particulate matter (PM), as ubiquitous environmental pollutants routinely measured in air quality monitoring. A SPE cartridge was used based on a molecular imprinted polymer (MIP-SPE) properly tailored for selective retention of PAHs with 4 and more benzene fused rings. The performance of the clean-up procedure was evaluated with the specific concern of selective purification towards saturated hydrocarbons, which are the PM components mostly interfering GC analysis of target PAHs. Under optimized operative conditions, the MIP-SPE provided analyte recovery close to 95% for heavier PAHs, from benzo(α)pyrene to benzo(ghi)perylene, and close to 90% for four benzene rings PAHs, with good reproducibility (RSDs: 2.5%-5.9%). Both concentrations and emissions of many air pollutants have been decreasing due to implement of control measures in China, in contrast to the fact that an increase in emissions of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) has been reported. This study employed seven years continuous NMHCs measurements and the related activities data of Shanghai, a megacity in China, to explore evolution of emissions and effectiveness of air pollution control measures. The mixing ratio of NMHCs showed no statistical interannual changes, of which their compositions exhibited marked changes. This resulted in a decreasing trend of ozone formation potential by 3.8%/year (p 0.05, the same below), which should be beneficial to ozone pollution mitigation as its production in Shanghai is in the NMHCs-limited regime. Observed alkanes, aromatics and acetylene changed by +3.7%/year, -5.9%/year and -7.4%/year, respectively, and alkenes showed no apparent trend. NMHCs sources were apportioned by a positive matrix factorization model. Accordingly, vehicular emissions (-5.9%/year) and petrochemical industry emissions (-7.1%/year) decreased significantly, but the decrease slowed down; significant reduction in solvent usage (-9.0%/year) appeared after 2010; however, emissions of natural gas (+12.6%/year) and fuel evaporation (with an increasing fraction) became more important. The inconsistency between observations and inventories was found in interannual trend and speciation as well as source contributions, emphasizing the need for further validation in NMHCs emission inventory. Our study confirms the effectiveness of measures targeting mobile and centralized emissions from industrial sources and reveals a need focusing on fugitive emissions, which provided new insights into future air policies in polluted region.

Pyrolysis is a leading technology to convert non-recyclable plastic waste to fuels or chemicals. As interest in the circular economy grows, the latter option has seemingly become more attractive. Once waste plastic is pyrolyzed to, for example, naphtha, however, additional steps are required to produce a polymer product. These steps consume additional energy and water and emit greenhouse gases (GHG). It is unclear whether this more circular option of non-recyclable plastics to virgin plastics offers environmental benefits, compared to their conversion to fuels. We therefore examine whether it is possible to determine the best use of pyrolyzing non-recyclable plastic - fuels or chemicals (low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as product)- from a life cycle perspective. We use recently published life cycle assessments of non-recycled plastics pyrolysis and consider two functional units: per unit mass of non-recyclable plastics and per unit product - MJ of naphtha or kg of LDPE. In the U.S., on a cradle-to-gate, per unit mass waste basis, producing fuel is lower-emitting than producing LDPE from pyrolysis. The opposite is true in the EU. But expanding the system boundary to the grave results in LDPE as the lower-emitting product in both regions. Naphtha and LDPE produced from non-recyclable plastics are less GHG-intensive than conventional routes to these products. Fossil fuel and water consumption and waste generation are all lower in the P2F case. Our results highlight that prioritization of P2P and P2F may depend on regional characteristics such as conventional waste management techniques and water scarcity.

A new type of gas chromatographic (GC) column employing a mesoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) layer as the stationary phase was developed. The gas fluidic channels were fabricated on both sides of an aluminum disk via a mechanical stamping process. The tops of the gas fluidic channels were sealed with a thick aluminum foil and a thin glass liner. The cross section of this fluidic channel is triangular in shape and consists of two aluminum surfaces and one glass surface. The diameter of the aluminum disk is 8.7 cm, and the length of the GC column is 6.0 m. The AAO layer was grown on the aluminum surface and had an average pore diameter of 50 nm and a specific surface area of 4.13 m

The level of accuracy that can be achieved by a force field is influenced by choices made in the interaction-function representation and in the relevant simulation parameters. These choices, referred to here as functional-form variants (FFVs), include for example the model resolution, the charge-derivation procedure, the van der Waals combination rules, the cutoff distance, and the treatment of the long-range interactions. Ideally, assessing the effect of a given FFV on the intrinsic accuracy of the force-field representation requires that only the specific FFV is changed and that this change is performed at an optimal level of parametrization, a requirement that may prove extremely challenging to achieve in practice. Here, we present a first attempt at such a comparison for one specific FFV, namely the choice of a united-atom (UA) versus an all-atom (AA) resolution in a force field for saturated acyclic (halo)alkanes. Two force-field versions (UA vs AA) are optimized in an automated way using the CombiFF approach against 961 experimental values for the pure-liquid densities ρliq and vaporization enthalpies ΔHvap of 591 compounds. For the AA force field, the torsional and third-neighbor Lennard–Jones parameters are also refined based on quantum-mechanical rotational-energy profiles. The comparison between the UA and AA resolutions is also extended to properties that have not been included as parameterization targets, namely the surface-tension coefficient γ, the isothermal compressibility κT, the isobaric thermal-expansion coefficient αP, the isobaric heat capacity cP, the static relative dielectric permittivity ϵ, the self-diffusion coefficient D, the shear viscosity η, the hydration free energy ΔGwat, and the free energy of solvation ΔGche in cyclohexane. For the target properties ρliq and ΔHvap, the UA and AA resolutions reach very similar levels of accuracy after optimization. For the nine other properties, the AA representation leads to more accurate results in terms of η; comparably accurate results in terms of γ, κT, αP, ϵ, D, and ΔGche; and less accurate results in terms of cP and ΔGwat. Epidermal waxes are part of the outermost hydrophobic structures of apples and play a significant role in enhancing apple resistance and improving fruit quality. The biosynthetic precursors of epidermal waxes are very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), which are made into different wax components through various wax synthesis pathways. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the AtLACS1 protein can activate the alkane synthesis pathway to produce very long-chain acyl CoAs (VLC-acyl-CoAs), which provide substrates for wax synthesis, from VLCFAs. The apple protein MdLACS1, encoded by the MdLACS1 gene, belongs to the AMP-binding superfamily and has long-chain acyl coenzyme A synthase activity, but its function in apple remains unclear. Here, we identified MdLACS1 in apple (Malus × domestica) and analyzed its function. Our results suggest that MdLACS1 promotes wax synthesis and improves biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, which were directly or indirectly dependent on wax. Our study further refines the molecular mechanism of wax biosynthesis in apples and elucidates the physiological function of wax in resistance to external stresses. These findings provide candidate genes for the synergistic enhancement of apple fruit quality and stress tolerance.

Alkanes are saturated apolar hydrocarbons that range from their simplest form, methane, to high-molecular-weight compounds. Although alkanes were once considered biologically recalcitrant under anaerobic conditions, microbiological investigations have now identified several microbial taxa that can anaerobically degrade alkanes. Here we review recent discoveries in the anaerobic oxidation of alkanes with a specific focus on archaea that use specific methyl coenzyme M reductases to activate their substrates. Our understanding of the diversity of uncultured alkane-oxidizing archaea has expanded through the use of environmental metagenomics and enrichment cultures of syntrophic methane-, ethane-, propane-, and butane-oxidizing marine archaea with sulfate-reducing bacteria. A recently cultured group of archaea directly couples long-chain alkane degradation with methane formation, expanding the range of substrates used for methanogenesis. This article summarizes the rapidly growing knowledge of the diversity, physiology, and habitat distribution of alkane-degrading archaea.

Cuticular waxes cover the aerial surfaces of land plants and protect them from various environmental stresses. Alkanes are major wax components and contribute to plant drought tolerance, but the biosynthesis and regulation of alkanes remain largely unknown in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Here, we identified and functionally characterized a key alkane biosynthesis gene ECERIFERUM1-6A (TaCER1-6A) from wheat. The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9)-mediated knockout mutation in TaCER1-6A greatly reduced the contents of C27, C29, C31, and C33 alkanes in wheat leaves, while TaCER1-6A overexpression significantly increased the contents of these alkanes in wheat leaves, suggesting that TaCER1-6A is specifically involved in the biosynthesis of C27, C29, C31, and C33 alkanes on wheat leaf surfaces. TaCER1-6A knockout lines exhibited increased cuticle permeability and reduced drought tolerance, whereas TaCER1-6A overexpression lines displayed reduced cuticle permeability and enhanced drought tolerance. TaCER1-6A was highly expressed in flag leaf blades and seedling leaf blades and could respond to abiotic stresses and abscisic acid. TaCER1-6A was located in the endoplasmic reticulum, which is the subcellular compartment responsible for wax biosynthesis. A total of three haplotypes (HapI/II/III) of TaCER1-6A were identified in 43 wheat accessions, and HapI was the dominant haplotype (95%) in these wheat varieties. Additionally, we identified two R2R3-MYB transcription factors TaMYB96-2D and TaMYB96-5D that bound directly to the conserved motif CAACCA in promoters of the cuticular wax biosynthesis genes TaCER1-6A, TaCER1-1A, and fatty acyl-CoA reductase4. Collectively, these results suggest that TaCER1-6A is required for C27, C29, C31, and C33 alkanes biosynthesis and improves drought tolerance in wheat.

The catalytic asymmetric construction of Csp(3)–Csp(3) bonds remains one of the foremost challenges in organic synthesis.(1) Metal-catalyzed cross-electrophile couplings (XEC) have emerged as a powerful tool for C–C bond formation.(2–5) However, coupling two distinct Csp(3)-electrophiles with high cross- and stereoselectivity continues as an unmet challenge. Here, we report a highly chemo- and enantioselective Csp(3)–Csp(3) XEC between alkyl halides and nitroalkanes catalyzed by flavin-dependent ‘ene’-reductases. Photoexcitation of the enzyme-templated charge-transfer complex between an alkyl halide and flavin cofactor enables the chemoselective reduction of alkyl halide over the thermodynamically favored nitroalkane partner. The key C–C bond-forming step occurs via the reaction of an alkyl radical with an in situ generated nitronate to form a nitro radical anion that collapses to form nitrite and an alkyl radical. An enzyme-controlled hydrogen atom transfer affords high levels of enantioselectivity. This reactivity is unknown in small molecule catalysis and highlights the potential for enzymes to use new mechanisms to address long-standing synthetic challenges.

Torsion and Lennard-Jones parameters of the OPLS all-atom force field have been refined for describing thermodynamics and dynamics of a wide range of liquid alkanes. Monte Carlo statistical mechanics (MC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out. For thermodynamics properties, MC simulations with truncated electrostatic interactions performed very closely to MD simulations with a Verlet neighbor list and the Particle Mesh Ewald algorithm. The average errors in comparison with experimental data for computed properties were improved with the modified force field (OPLS/2020), especially for long-chain alkanes. For liquid densities, heats of vaporization, and free energies of hydration, the average errors are 0.01 g/cm(3), 0.2 kcal/mol, and ca. 0.5 kcal/mol, respectively; significant gains were made for relative heats of vaporization of isomeric series. Results for self-diffusion coefficients also reproduce well experimental data for linear alkane liquids up to hexadecane. The new force field is suitable for use in improved modeling of myriad systems of importance in chemistry, biology, and materials science.

A novel and effective Brønsted acid-catalyzed chemoselective synthesis of bis(indolyl)alkanes and 3-alkyl indoles is reported. The selectivity of two significant indole derivatives is attained by allowing the same substrates to go through divergent reaction routes catalyzed by different catalysts. Furthermore, this mild approach is applicable to a wide range of substrates and has high efficacy in large-scale reactions. A plausible mechanism is provided based on the control experiments and spectroscopic studies.

Numerical computations comprising of Grand Canonical-Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Canonical Statistical Ensemble (NVT) Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations were used to study the diffusion and sorption characteristics primarily for methane, ethane, and ethene molecules and for their ternary mixtures at different temperatures in ZIF-8 porous material. Methane as pure component or in mixture proved to be the sorbed hydrocarbon with the higher molecular mobility at the temperature range of 273-373 K among alkanes and alkenes. In addtion, alkenes were the hydrocarbons with the higher self-diffusion coefficients compared to the respective alkanes. In the ternary mixtures ethane was preferentially sorbed in ZIF-8 at all temperatures studied. Direct comparisons of the self-diffusivity data obtained from the NVT-MD simulations with recently reported Magic Angle Spinning Pulsed Field Gradient Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS PFG NMR) measurements showed reasonable agreement. Furthermore, the NVT-MD self-diffusivity coefficients in conjunction with the aforementioned MAS PFG NMR experimental measurements, and sorption thermodynamic data obtained from the present GCMC simulations were utilized for the development of individual Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) predictive modeling procedures in order to provide additional quantitative and qualitative information regarding the diffusion and sorption of small alkanes, alkenes in ZIF-8. The ANNs predictions were in good agreement with the experimental measurements and with the molecular simulation data. The modeling and analysis capabilities of ANNs along with their fast computations using moderate computer resources can significantly assist the irreplaceable molecular simulation and experimental approaches to cope with complicated problems at the molecular level.

The adsorption of ions to water-hydrophobe interfaces influences a wide range of phenomena, including chemical reaction rates, ion transport across biological membranes, and electrochemical and many catalytic processes; hence, developing a detailed understanding of the behavior of ions at water-hydrophobe interfaces is of central interest. Here, we characterize the adsorption of the chaotropic thiocyanate anion (SCN − ) to two prototypical liquid hydrophobic surfaces, water-toluene and water-decane, by surface-sensitive nonlinear spectroscopy and compare the results against our previous studies of SCN − adsorption to the air-water interface. For these systems, we observe no spectral shift in the charge transfer to solvent spectrum of SCN − , and the Gibb’s free energies of adsorption for these three different interfaces all agree within error. We employed molecular dynamics simulations to develop a molecular-level understanding of the adsorption mechanism and found that the adsorption for SCN − to both water-toluene and water-decane interfaces is driven by an increase in entropy, with very little enthalpic contribution. This is a qualitatively different mechanism than reported for SCN − adsorption to the air-water and graphene-water interfaces, wherein a favorable enthalpy change was the main driving force, against an unfavorable entropy change.

An analytical workflow for the analysis of olefins in gasoline that combines selective bromination and comprehensive two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) with discovery-based analysis is reported. First, a standard mix containing

Candida albicans is the most prevalent fungus in humans, producing infections ranging from mucosal to systemic. C. albicans colonizes mucosal surfaces asymptomatically as commensal, but, if the host environment is disrupted, or if the host immune system is compromised, C. albicans can multiply and infect almost all places in the host. The present study was aimed to identify a promising antibiofilm agent against Candida albicans biofilm. Through the molecular docking approach, it was identified that Eicosane was the top hit among the alkanes screened. Furthermore, in vitro analysis revealed that Eicosane at 100 µg/mL was able to inhibit 60% of C. albicans biofilm without inhibiting the growth. Moreover, light microscopic investigation unveiled the significant reduction in the adhesion and colonization of yeast cells to the matrix on Eicosane-treated samples. The CLSM images showing a reduction in biomass and thickness of C. albicans biofilm in the presence of Eicosane were validated using COMSTAT. The results were well corroborated with SEM micrograph in which a pellucid gap between the cells was observed and colonization was considerably reduced. Further from qPCR analysis, the genes responsible for biofilm formation and hyphal growth were found to be downregulated in the presence of Eicosane. Similarly, Eicosane at BIC was able to significantly inhibit the adhesion and colonization of yeast cells on the chorion of the zebrafish embryos. Moreover, the binding ability of Eicosane to ALS3 was revealed through docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the changes in apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) due to differences in diffusion time reflect tissue properties in actual measurements of phantoms. Materials and methods Various n-alkane phantoms and sucrose/collagen phantoms with various collagen densities were set up with and without polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam with an average pore diameter of 300 μm. Thus, n-alkanes or sucrose/collagen represented substrate viscosity and the presence of PVA foam represented tissue structure with septum. Diffusion-weighted images with various diffusion times (7.71–60 ms) were acquired using pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) and oscillating-gradient spin-echo (OGSE) sequences. The ADCs of the phantoms with and without PVA foam were calculated. Results The ADCs of some of the phantoms without PVA decreased with diffusion times decreased. In the n-alkane phantoms, only C8H18 showed significantly different ADCs depending on the use of PVA foam in the OGSE sequence. On the other hand, sucrose/collagen phantoms showed significant differences according to diffusion time. The ADCs of the phantoms decreased as the molecular size of the n-alkanes or collagen density of the sucrose/collagen phantom increased. Compared to phantoms without PVA foam, the ADC of the phantoms with PVA foam decreased as the diffusion time increased. Conclusion Changes in ADCs due to differences in diffusion time reflect tissue properties in actual measurements of phantoms. These changes in ADCs can be used for tissue characterization in vivo.

An organophosphorus-catalyzed C–N bond-forming reductive coupling of nitroalkanes with arylboronic acids and esters is reported. The method shows excellent chemoselectivity for the nitro/boronic acid substrate pair, allowing synthesis of N-(hetero)arylamines rich in functionalization. The identification of a sterically-reduced phosphetane catalyst capable of productive coupling in the P(III)/P(V)=O redox manifold is the key enabling development. Combined experimental kinetics and computational mechanistic studies show that the sterically-reduced catalyst affects post-rate limiting steps to enable the C–N coupling event in preference to deleterious side-paths.

Microbial anaerobic oxidation of alkanes intrigues the scientific community by way of its impact on the global carbon cycle, and its biotechnological applications. Archaea are proposed to degrade short- and long-chain alkanes to CO2 by reversing methanogenesis, a theoretically reversible process. The pathway would start with alkane activation, an endergonic step catalyzed by methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR) homologues that would generate alkyl-thiols carried by coenzyme M. While the methane-generating MCR found in methanogens has been well characterized, the enzymatic activity of the putative alkane-fixing counterparts has not been validated so far. Such an absence of biochemical investigations contrasts with the current explosion of metagenomics data, which draws new potential alkane-oxidizing pathways in various archaeal phyla. Therefore, validating the physiological function of these putative alkane-fixing machines and investigating how their structures, catalytic mechanisms, and cofactors vary depending on the targeted alkane have become urgent needs. The first structural insights into the methane- and ethane-capturing MCRs highlighted unsuspected differences and proposed some explanations for their substrate specificity. This Perspective reviews the current physiological, biochemical, and structural knowledge of alkyl-CoM reductases and offers fresh ideas about the expected mechanistic and chemical differences among members of this broad family. We conclude with the challenges of the investigation of these particular enzymes, which might one day generate biofuels for our modern society.

Solid-state gas sensors composed of complex oxide electrolytes offer great potential for analyzing various atmospheres at high temperatures. While relatively simple gas mixtures (H2O+N2, O2+N2) have been successfully studied by means of ZrO2-based sensors, the precise detection of more complex compounds represents a challenging task. In this work, we present our findings regarding the analysis of lower alkanes (CH4, C2H6, and C3H8) mixed with nitrogen as an inert gas, utilizing an amperometric ZrO2-based sensor. This sensor, serving as an electrochemical cell with a diffusion barrier, was tested at 500–600 °C to measure the limiting current, which depends on the gas composition and can be further used as a basis for calibration curves. In addition, the diffusion coefficients of the specified gas mixtures were successfully found and compared with references, confirming the applicability of the fabricated sensor for studying diffusion processes in wide concentration and temperature ranges.

Utilising cavitation for enhancing oxidative desulphurization has been investigated for nearly-two decades with recent investigations shifting focus from low-capacity acoustic cavitation (AC) to scalable hydrodynamic cavitation (HC). This work focuses on developing a viable means for removing thiophene’s from fuels. In the first phase of this work, use of vortex based HC devices for removal of single and dual ring thiophenes from dodecane was investigated. HC was shown to be able to remove single ring thiophene from dodecane without using any external catalyst or additives. However, in absence of catalyst or additives, it was not possible to remove dual ring thiophenes such as dibenzothiophene using HC. Therefore, in the second phase of this work, various strategies based on use of catalyst or additives to augment cavitation based process were investigated. AC based experiments were opted for shortlisting suitable catalysts and additives for intensifying cavitation based processes. The influence of using oxidant (H2O2) and carboxylic acid catalysts on efficacy of removal of dual ring thiophenes is presented. Several conditions were tested, and the optimal volumetric ratios of 0.95 v/v % H2O2 and 6.25 v/v % HCOOH was identified and utilised throughout the remainder of the study. Regeneration of extractant which accumulates oxidised sulphur species from dodecane was also investigated using AC. The additives and process conditions reported in this work are useful for enhancing desulphurization performance.

Although long-chain aliphatic hydrocarbons are documented in meteorites, their origin is poorly understood. A key question is whether they are pristine or a byproduct of terrestrial alteration? To understand if these long-chain hydrocarbons are indigenous, it will be important to explore their thermodynamic and mechanical stability at conditions experienced by extraterrestrial objects during atmospheric entry and passage. Extreme pressures and temperatures experienced by meteorites are likely to alter the molecular organization of these long-chain hydrocarbons. These structural changes associated with extreme conditions are often documented via laboratory-based Raman spectroscopic measurements. So far, Raman spectroscopic measurements have investigated the effect of static compression on the aliphatic hydrocarbons. The effect of temperature on the structural changes remains poorly explored. To bridge this gap, in this study, we have explored the behavior of two aliphatic hydrocarbons at simultaneously high pressures and temperatures. We have used a resistively heated diamond anvil cell. On compression to moderate pressures, the appearance of new vibrational modes in the low-energy region confirms prior studies and is related to the bending of the linear chains. Upon heating to ∼220 °C, we note that the new low-energy mode undergoes softening. The mode softening is likely due to the combination of unbending of the alkane chain and mode anharmonicity.

Here, we report a nickel-catalyzed enantioconvergent hydroalkylation of olefins with trifluoromethyl-containing α-alkyl halides for the synthesis of enantioenriched trifluoromethylated alkanes. This reaction employs readily available and bench-stable alkenes as alkyl coupling partners, featuring mild conditions, a broad substrate scope, and high functional group tolerance. The synthetic utility of this method is further demonstrated in the late-stage functionalization of a range of drug molecules and natural products.

Hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria typically metabolize a broad range of alkane substrates, but global metabolic characteristics of strains growing on alkane substrates in different chain lengths remain unclear. In this study, we analysed the transcriptional profiles of a hydrocarbon degrading bacterium, Dietzia sp. DQ12-45-1b, during growth on octacosane (C28), hexadecane (C16) and glucose as the sole carbon sources. Our results highlight that C16 and C28 induced common genes of core alkane degradation pathways in DQ12-45-1b, whereas transcriptional patterns of genes related to lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, biomass synthesis, and metal ion transportation were distinct. In addition, the transcriptional differences of genes related to glyoxylate shunt (GS) as well as growth phenotypes of mutant strain with defects in GS demonstrated that GS is essential for C16 degradation, though it is dispensable for C28 degradation in DQ12-45-1b. These results demonstrate that DQ12-45-1b cells exhibited considerable metabolic flexibility by using various mechanisms during growth on alkane substrates in different chain lengths. This study advances our knowledge of microbial hydrocarbon degradation and provides valuable information for the application of alkane-degrading bacteria in bioremediation and microbial enhanced oil recovery.

The lipids with a rich diversity of isomers face a formidable challenge in comprehensive structural analysis. The commonly used mass spectrometry-based techniques usually require a considerable number of molecules with sophisticated chemical derivatization or ion mobility separation, but the co-existing of structurally similar isomers often makes the distinction impossible. Here, we develop an alternative powerful liquid/liquid interfacial surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) strategy at normal temperature and pressure without any sources of ionization or radiation. This strategy generates high-resolution fingerprints in molecular chain length, C═C position, saturation, and regio- and stereoisomers of both glycerides and fatty acids and requires only trace amounts of molecules down to 1 ppb to achieve discrimination and exhibits great potentials to push the identification capability to trace levels or even the single-molecule level. According to experimental data and theoretical simulations, these targets have the amphiphilic and emulsifying properties, exhibit ordered molecular orientation and adsorption patterns, promote the co-assembly with plasmonic nanoarrays at the immiscible liquid/liquid interface, and consequently amplify the detection sensitivity. As a contrast, the typical SERS based on solid/air interfacial plasmonic nanoarrays faces the intrinsic bottleneck of extremely weak intensity and indistinguishable spectral fingerprints of lipid molecules. The vibrational fingerprints exhibit a rich range of well-resolved absorption features that are clearly diagnostic for fine structural changes and pave a new way for straightforward measurement without laborsome sample purification, enrichment, or complex derivatization. Although challenging, its unprecedented resolving power expands the potentials of SERS, serving as an ultimate analytical method to provide insights into the detailed structural features of other lipids under facile conditions in the future.

Currently, research on oily sludge treatment mainly focuses on optimizing the deoiling effect and research on the deoiling mechanism, and the influence of petroleum components on the properties and treatment of oily sludge is rarely considered. Therefore, in this study, petroleum substances in three types of oil sludge were eluted using the biosurfactant cleaning technology, and the influence of petroleum components on the cleaning process was explored. The results showed that the biosurfactants rhamnolipid and sophorolipid had a synergistic effect, and the oil-removal rate was as high as 92.2% when the SL mass fraction was 0.4 in the compound biosurfactant. Three types of oily sludge, wellsite-landing sludge, pipeline-landing sludge, and tank-bottom sludge, were cleaned by the compound biosurfactant; the results showed that the residual petroleum substance in liquid and solid phases, the turbidity value, and the zeta-potential value of the supernatant of oil sludge samples after cleaning increased with the increase in the heavy components of the oily sludge, and the oil-removal rate decreased gradually. After cleaning, the average relative molecular weight of the three oil phases increased with the heavy components, which was increased by 1.83, 4.83, and 10.72%, respectively, and the increase in molecular weight increased the difficulty of cleaning. After cleaning, the retention time and peak intensity of the oil sample changed significantly, and it had a stronger elution effect on low-molecular-weight alkanes. It was found that the compound biosurfactant had a good elution effect on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but the increase in the content of heavy components and the increase in aromatic rings increased the difficulty of cleaning. Moreover, it was found that the compound biosurfactant could not completely elute the petroleum substances on the surface of solid particles, and the asphaltene components in the oil phase were more difficult to elute than other components.

Honey bees (Apis) are important pollinators for food crops and wild plants, but are facing great threats from pathogens and parasites, especially an obligate ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor. Cell invasion is a key step for V. destructor to reproduce, and the parasite displays remarkable host preference in this process. Varroa destructor made its host-shift from its original host, the Asian honey bee Apis cerana, to the new host, the European honey bee Apis mellifera several decades ago. However, it remains largely unstudied whether V. destructor shows a cell invasion preference between the two host species. Using cell invasion bioassays on a modified four-well arena, we showed that V. destructor significantly preferred to invade the worker and drone larvae of A. mellifera rather than A. cerana, suggesting that the new host is much more attractive to the parasite than the original one. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), we revealed significant differences between the cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles of worker and drone larvae of the two bee hosts. The amounts of methyl-branched alkanes and alkenes (unsaturated CHCs), but not n-alkanes, were significantly different, and A. mellifera worker and drone larvae were found to express significantly higher amounts of methyl-alkanes, while A. cerana larvae produced higher amounts of alkenes. Cell invasion bioassays with glass dummies showed that the mites preferred the glass dummies coated with the CHCs of A. mellifera worker or drone larvae, which indicates a role of larval CHCs in mediating the preferential cell invasion of Varroa. The findings from this study extend our understanding of the host preference of V. destructor, and can potentially contribute to the development of effective strategies for mite control.

Primary alkyl halides have broad utility as fine chemicals in organic synthesis. The direct halogenation of alkenes is one of the most efficient approaches for the synthesis of these halides. Internal alkenes, in particular mixtures of isomers from refineries, constitute readily available and inexpensive feedstock and are the most attractive starting materials for this synthesis. However, the hydrohalogenation of alkenes generally affords branched alkyl halides; there are no catalytic methods to prepare linear alkyl halides directly from internal alkenes, let alone from a mixture of alkene isomers. Here we report the remote oxidative halogenation of alkenes under palladium catalysis via which both terminal and internal alkenes yield primary alkyl halides efficiently. Engineering pyridine-oxazoline ligands by introducing a hydroxyl group is essential for achieving excellent chemo- and regioselectivity. The catalytic system is also good for the mixture of alkene isomers generated from dehydrogenation of alkanes, providing a window to investigate the high-value utilization of inexpensive alkanes.

Paraffin wax deposition has long been a vexing problem in industry. Especially, in offshore oil production, paraffin wax deposits and clogs pipes and containers because of low temperature, causing severe economic loss. It has been known that the crystallization of n-alkanes mainly causes the deposition of paraffin wax, which is necessary to understand the mechanism of the crystallization behavior of paraffin wax. We solve the challenge of describing the crystallization behavior of the alkane mixture system and evaluate the contributions of every carbon atom to crystallization based on the occupied volume, structure entropy, and order parameter. These results demonstrate that the middle atoms are the main contributor to crystallization, and the end atoms of n-alkanes are unfavorable for the crystallization of n-alkanes, showing that increasing the number of end atoms, for example, adding branched alkanes, will hinder the crystallization of paraffin wax. Furthermore, perhydrosqualene is chosen to study the inhibition of crystallization by adding branched alkanes. As there are different properties between the end and the middle atoms, based on the principle of dissolution with similar properties, a small number of branched alkanes will promote crystallization. Also, an inhibitory effect of the end atoms is observed when the proportion of branched alkanes increases to a certain percentage. Our simulation work describes the crystallization behavior of paraffin wax in detail, providing theoretical assistance for preventing and controlling paraffin deposition.

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are diverse in insects, and include variable classes of cuticular lipids, contributing to waterproofing for insects under desiccation environments. However, this waterproofing function of CHCs is still not well characterized in aphids. In this study, we compared CHC profiles for desiccation-resistant and nonresistant genotypes of the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), in responses to desiccation. Our result showed that a total of 27 CHCs were detected in S. avenae, and linear alkanes (e.g., n-C29) were found to be the predominant components. Long-chain monomethyl alkanes were found to associate closely with water loss rates in S. avenae in most cases. Resistant genotypes of both wing morphs had higher contents of short-chain n-alkanes under control than nonresistant genotypes, showing the importance of short-chain n-alkanes in constitutive desiccation resistance. Among these, n-C25 might provide a CHC signature to distinguish between desiccation-resistant and nonresistant individuals. Compared with linear alkanes, methyl-branched CHCs appeared to display higher plasticity in rapid responses to desiccation, especially for 2-MeC26, implying that methyl-branched CHCs could be more sensitive to desiccation, and play more important roles in induced desiccation-resistance. Thus, both constitutive and induced CHCs (linear or methyl-branched) can contribute to adaptive responses of S. avenae populations under desiccation environments. Our results provide substantial evidence for adaptive changes of desiccation resistance and associated CHCs in S. avenae, and have significant implications for aphid evolution and management in the context of global climate change.

In the present study, we demonstrate the regulatory effects and mechanism of broussonin A and B, diphenylpropane derivatives isolated from Broussonetia kazinoki, on vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A)-stimulated endothelial cell responses in vitro and microvessel sprouting ex vivo. Treatment with broussonin A or B suppressed VEGF-A-stimulated endothelial cell proliferation by regulating the expression of cell cycle-related proteins and the phosphorylation status of retinoblastoma protein. In addition, treatment with broussonin A or B abrogated VEGF-A-stimulated angiogenic responses including endothelial cell migration, invasion, tube formation and microvessel formation from rat aortic rings. These anti-angiogenic activities of broussonin A and B were mediated through inactivation of VEGF-A-stimulated downstream signalling pathways, localization of vascular endothelial-cadherin at cell-cell contacts, and down-regulation of integrin β1 and integrin-liked kinase. Furthermore, treatment with broussonin A or B inhibited proliferation and invasion of non-small cell lung cancer and ovarian cancer cells. Taken together, our findings suggest the pharmacological potential of broussonin A and B in the regulation of angiogenesis, cancer cell growth and progression.

This review focuses on gold-catalyzed hydroarylation, which produces aromatic alkenes, diaryl-alkanes, heterocycles, carbocycles, and arylbutadienes by directly functionalizing C-H bonds. Without the need for prefunctionalization, direct functionalization of aromatic C-H bonds with unsaturated moieties (alkyne, alkene, allene) provides an efficient synthetic strategy with fewer reaction steps. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential of ambient air in Guangzhou, China was investigated using a field-deployed oxidation flow reactor (OFR). The OFR was used to mimic hours to weeks of atmospheric exposure to hydroxyl (OH) radicals within the 2-3 min residence time. A comprehensive investigation on the variation of VOCs and OVOCs as a function of OH exposure is shown. Substantial formation of organic acids and nitrogen-containing OVOC species were observed. Maximum SOA formation in the OFR was observed following 1-4 equiv days' OH exposure. Alkanes are ubiquitous in marine ecosystems and originate from diverse sources ranging from natural oil seeps to anthropogenic inputs and biogenic production by cyanobacteria. Enzymes that degrade cyanobacterial alkanes (typically C15-C17 compounds) such as the alkane monooxygenase (AlkB) are widespread, but it remains unclear whether or not AlkB variants exist that specialize in degradation of crude oil from natural or accidental spills, a much more complex mixture of long-chain hydrocarbons. In the present study, large-scale analysis of available metagenomic and genomic data from the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) oil spill revealed a novel, divergent AlkB clade recovered from genomes with no cultured representatives that was dramatically increased in abundance in crude-oil impacted ecosystems. In contrast, the AlkB clades associated with biotransformation of cyanobacterial alkanes belonged to 'canonical' or hydrocarbonoclastic clades, and based on metatranscriptomics data and compared to the novel clade, were much more weakly expressed during crude oil biodegradation in laboratory mesocosms. The absence of this divergent AlkB clade in metagenomes of uncontaminated samples from the global ocean survey but not from the GoM as well as its frequent horizontal gene transfer indicated a priming effect of the Gulf for crude oil biodegradation likely driven by natural oil seeps.

Nitroalkanes such as nitromethane, nitroethane, 1-nitropropane (1NP), and 2-nitropropane (2NP), derived from anthropogenic activities, are hazardous environmental pollutants due to their toxicity and carcinogenic activity. In nature, 3-nitropropionate (3NPA) and its derivatives are produced as a defense mechanism by many groups of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, insects, and plants. 3NPA is highly toxic as its conjugate base, propionate-3-nitronate (P3N), is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase, essential to the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and can inhibit isocitrate lyase, a critical enzyme of the glyoxylate cycle. In response to these toxic compounds, several organisms on the phylogenetic scale express genes that code for enzymes involved in the catabolism of nitroalkanes: nitroalkane oxidases (NAOs) and nitronate monooxygenases (NMOs) (previously classified as nitropropane dioxygenases, NPDs). Two types of NMOs have been identified: class I and class II, which differ in structure, catalytic efficiency, and preferred substrates. This review focuses on the biochemical properties, structure, classification, and physiological functions of NMOs, and offers perspectives for their in vivo and in vitro applications. • Nitronate monooxygenases (NMOs) are key enzymes in nitroalkane catabolism. • NMO enzymes are involved in defense mechanisms in different organisms. • NMO applications include organic synthesis, biocatalysts, and bioremediation.

The use of biologically produced alkanes has attracted considerable attention as an alternative energy source to petroleum. In 2010, the alkane synthesis pathway in cyanobacteria was found to include two small globular proteins, acyl-(acyl carrier protein [ACP]) reductase (AAR) and aldehyde deformylating oxygenase (ADO). AAR produces fatty aldehydes from acyl-ACPs/CoAs, which are then converted by ADO to alkanes/alkenes equivalent to diesel oil. This discovery has paved the way for alkane production by genetically modified organisms. Since then, many studies have investigated the reactions catalyzed by AAR and ADO. In this review, we first summarize recent findings on structures and catalytic mechanisms of AAR and ADO. We then outline the mechanism by which AAR and ADO form a complex and efficiently transfer the insoluble aldehyde produced by AAR to ADO. Furthermore, we describe recent advances in protein engineering studies on AAR and ADO to improve the efficiency of alkane production in genetically engineered microorganisms such as Escherichia coli and cyanobacteria. Finally, the role of alkanes in cyanobacteria and future perspectives for bioalkane production using AAR and ADO are discussed. This review provides strategies for improving the production of bioalkanes using AAR and ADO in cyanobacteria for enabling the production of carbon–neutral fuels.

Alternation in various properties of

Steam reforming is one of the most important industrial chemical processes. However, it is usually performed in large-scale reactors and has high energy demand. Catalytic partial oxidation of methane, on the other hand, can be carried out in compact and low capital-cost reactors to produce syngas. Rh is generally considered the best metal catalyst for partial oxidation. Effusive molecular beam experiments were used to measure CH4 and C2H6 dissociative sticking coefficients, S(Tg, Ts ; θ) on a Rh(111) crystal, for which the impinging gas temperature, Tg, and surface temperature, Ts, could be independently varied, along with the angle of incidence, θ, of the impinging gas. The 500 – 900 K temperature range explored is relevant to heterogeneous catalytic processes such as methane partial oxidation. A dynamically biased precursor mediated microcanonical trapping (PMMT) model of dissociative chemisorption was used to analyze the experimental results. Modelling indicates that unlike on the Pt (111) surface where (111) terrace site reactivity dominates, methane reactivity on Rh (111) indicates that Rh step sites are not easily poisoned by C accumulation and can contribute substantially to the overall methane reactivity, especially at lower temperatures. Threshold energies for dissociative chemisorption on the terraces and steps sites were optimally modeled as 74.3 kJ/mol and 36.7 kJ/mol. Translations parallel to the surface and rotations were treated as spectator degrees of freedoms. The efficacy of vibrational energy to promote reactivity relative to normal translational energy was ηv=0.55 and one surface oscillator participated in energy exchange within the collisionally formed precursor complexes. A two-channel Arrhenius model restricted to only the thermal dissociative sticking coefficient measured along the direction of surface normal, Sn(T=Tg=Ts), yielded apparent activation energies of 70.6 and 25.5 kJ/mol which could be attributed to terrace and step sites, respectively. Such multidimensional reactivity studies allow for relatively facile designation of the terrace and step activity which allows us to reconcile single crystal and Rh foil reactivity studies. PMMT modeling of the step site reactivity on Rh(111) could be extrapolated to replicate the thermal dissociative sticking coefficient of the “defect dominated” Rh film surfaces measured by Ehrlich at temperatures in the 250 -350 K range where much of the elevated kinetic isotope effect (9 to 15) could be attributed to quantum mechanical tunneling through the reactive barrier. In ethane dosing experiments, it is discovered that carbon migration happens at a significant rate at 900 K and carbon segregation in each direct would interfere with sticking coefficient measurements. C2 species might favor the formation of polymeric C or graphene on the surface which was not observed for methane, which may further complicate carbon behavior on Rh(111) surface.

Due to the barrier effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, transporters are required for hydrophobic alkane uptake. However, there are few reports on long-chain alkane transporters. In this study, a potential long-chain alkane transporter (AltL) was screened in Acinetobacter venetianus RAG-1 by comparative transcriptome analysis. Growth and degradation experiments showed that altL deletion led to the loss of n-octacosane utilization capacity of RAG-1. To identify the function of AltL, we measured the existence and accumulation of alkanes in cells through the constructed alkane detection system and isotope transport experiment, which proved its long-chain alkane transport function. Growth experiments using different chain-length n-alkanes and fatty acids as substrates showed that AltL was responsible for the transport of (very) long-chain n-alkanes (C(20) to C(38)) and fatty acids (C(18A) to C(28A)) and was also involved in the uptake of medium-chain n-alkanes (C(16) to C(18)). Subsequently, we analyzed the distribution of AltL in bacteria, and found that AltL homologs are widespread in Gamma-, Beta-, and Deltaproteobacteria. An AltL homolog in Pseudomonas aeruginosa was also identified to participate in long-chain alkane transport by a gene deletion and growth assay. We also found that overexpression of altL in Pseudomonas aeruginosa enhanced the degradation of C(16) to C(32) n-alkanes. In addition, structure analysis showed that AltL has longer extracellular loops than other FadL family members, which may be involved in the binding of alkanes. These results showed that AltL is a novel transporter and that it is mainly responsible for the transport of long-chain n-alkanes and (very) long-chain fatty acids and has broad application potential. Many Gram-negative bacteria can use alkanes as carbon and energy sources, which is an important strategy for oil pollution remediation. Alkane uptake is the first step for its utilization. Hence, the characterization of transport proteins is of great significance for the recovery of oil pollution and other potential applications in industrial engineering bacteria. At present, some short- and medium-chain alkane transporters have been identified, but stronger hydrophobic long-chain alkane transporters have received little attention. In this study, the broad-spectrum transporter AltL, identified in RAG-1, makes up for the lack of research on the transport of long-chain alkanes and (very) long-chain fatty acids.
