Abstract

We report on a search for the rare decay K_L -> pi^0 nu nubar in the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. We searched for two-photon events whose kinematics were consistent with an isolated pi^0 coming from the decay K_L -> pi^0 nu nubar. One candidate event was observed, which was consistent with the expected level of background. An upper limit on the branching ratio was determined to be B(K_L -> pi^0 nu nubar) < 1.6E-6 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The KTeV Project includes two new fixed-target kaon experiments at Fermilab, E-832 and E-799 Phase II, which will use almost the same apparatus. E-832 will perform a new measurement of ϵ′ϵ, with a goal of 10−4 accuracy, while E-799 Phase II will search for rare KL decays of the form KL → π0ll, which have important direct-CP-violating contributions in the Standard Model. The KTeV apparatus is described, and the status of the project is presented. Some initial indications of data quality are given.

Abstract

This report documents the accomplishments of a Phase I project whose purpose was to demonstrate feasibility of developing inexpensive and fast data storage using multi-host Fibre Channel disk clusters. In Phase I, a working file system called ZFS was developed and tested. The ZFS approach was designed to be suited for high energy physics applications, but is general and flexible enough to be useful for other high-volume applications. The ZFS approach, which borrows from the networking concept of cut-through routing, uses Linux boxes and disk clusters in a Fibre Channel--Arbitrated Loop architecture. In ZFS, file locking and other meta-data level operations are carried out over the primary data network, after which all data are sent directly over a Fibre Channel between the workstation and the disk cluster. No intermediate server is required. Substantially higher throughputs than in traditional networked disk architectures have been demonstrated. The ZFS architecture is described and tests of the first implementation of ZFS at Fermilab are discussed. The current system is implemented for Linux and is being optimized for Fermilab's needs, but extensions to other operating systems and other data-intensive applications are clearly foreseen.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of clinical mastitis on reproductive performance of high producing Jersey cows. Cows (n = 102) with clinical mastitis during the first 150 d of lactation were evaluated. Groups were balanced according to lactation number and days of lactation and sub-divided as follows: group 1, clinical mastitis before first artificial insemination (AI) (n = 48); group 2, clinical mastitis between first AI and pregnancy (n = 14); group 3, clinical mastitis after confirmed pregnancy (n = 40); and group 4, control cows (n = 103) with no clinical mastitis. No differences in reproductive performance were detected because of milk production or mastitis caused by Gram-positive or Gram-negative pathogens. The number of days to first AI was significantly greater for cows with clinical mastitis before first AI (93.6 d) than for all other groups (71.0 d). Artificial inseminations per conception were significantly greater for cows with clinical mastitis after first AI (2.9) than for cows with clinical mastitis before first AI (1.6), cows with no clinical mastitis, or cows with clinical mastitis after confirmed pregnancy (1.7). The number of days to conception for cows with clinical mastitis after first AI (136.6 d) was significantly greater than that for control cows and that for cows that developed clinical mastitis after confirmed pregnancy (92.1 d). Clinical mastitis during early lactation markedly influenced reproductive performance of Jersey cows.

Abstract

We compare the particle flow in the event plane of three-jet qq-barg (quark-antiquark-gluon) events with the particle flow in radiative annihilation events qq-bar..gamma.. (quark-antiquark-photon) for similar kinematic configurations. In the angular region between quark and antiquark jet, we find a significant decrease in particle density for qq-barg as compared to qq-bar..gamma... This effect is predicted in QCD as a result of destructive interference between soft-gluon radiation from quark, antiquark, and hard gluon.

Abstract

We have used data from the Time Projection Chamber at the SLAC storage ring PEP to study the inclusive production of charged hadrons in e/sup /+//e/sup /-// annihilation at a center of mass energy of 29 GeV. Charged particles were identified by simultaneous dEdx and momentum measurements. We present cross sections and particle fractions for ..pi../sup/plus minus//, k/sup + -/, and p(/ovr/p//) as a function of energy, momentum, rapidity, and transverse momentum. We compare the predictions of various hadronization models to the data and note discrepancies at high momentum.
