Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and its journal ranking in terms of impact factor are highly influential in research evaluation. Comparisons of impact factor are valuable only when journals are of the same subject. However, a particular JCR subject category, Information Science and Library Science (IS–LS), combines two different study fields, namely Management Information Systems (MIS) and Library and Information Science (LIS). The combination of these subjects in a single category has caused the undesirable suppression of LIS journals in annual rankings. This study used papers and citation data from 88 IS–LS journals published between 2005 and 2014 to study subfield differences between MIS and LIS and their impact factor performances over 10 years. The study further examined the subfield differences within LIS, examining the differences and performances of library science, information science, and scientometric research. The results indicate that MIS and LIS are considerably different in terms of publishing and citation characteristics, cited subjects, and author affiliations. Moreover, significant differences were observed among LIS subfields. Furthermore, the results suggested that MIS and LIS pertain to two different research communities. Stakeholders must consider this difference and allow reasonable subfield differentiation and rank adjustment when using JCR for constructive research evaluations.

The article studies thematic groups of library science and bibliographic terminology that contributes to systematization of the named terminological system. The structure of the analyzed terminological groups, their peculiarities and quantitative characteristics are outlined. There have been collected the terms that differ in their structure: single-word (simple and complex) and consisting of many words (expressed by phrases). For example: indeksuvannia (indexing), ekspres-katalogizatsia (express cataloging), vydavnytcha produktsia (printed output), etc. However, we do not aim to consider the terms of library science and bibliography in this perspective. We would consider these terms by their meaning. Such analysis has enabled us to allocate 10 groups whose meanings are encoded in the core term of the compound structure. These terms include: types of bibliographic manuals and indexes (120 terms), terms to designate editions (113 terms), names of systems and classifications (88 terms), names of types of catalogs and card files (69 terms), terms to designate information (50 terms), titles designating types and kinds of libraries (49 terms), terms for designating types of bibliography (48 terms), names of document types (36 terms), names for the types of library funds (33 terms), titles of library services units (11 terms). Thus, having considered the groups of library science and bibliographic terms in which the primary meaning is encoded in the core term, we have discovered 10 lexical-semantic groups with different numbers of scientific nominations. The largest number of terms (there are 120 units) is used to indicate the types of bibliographic manuals and indexes. The smallest number of terms, there are 11, denote the names of the units of the library services. All this data characterizes the library science and bibliographic terms as a system that has its own distinct structure, hierarchy, and verbal content.

The article is devoted to the first in the domestic history International research and practical conference “Library Science in the 21st century: content, organization, digitalization and scientometrics”, organized by the Russian State Library, the National Library of Russia and the Russian Library Association. The conference was held on October 19—20, 2021 in Moscow — in the Year of Science and Technology and in the first year of implementation of the Strategy for development of librarianship in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030, where one of the main priorities is scientific and methodological support of libraries. The aim of the conference is to update the topics and identify the factors that stimulate the study of the library sphere, discussion of issues of organization and evaluation of performance of library science, the exchange of experience in organizing scientific activities. The event was held in face-to-face and remote format; more than 180 directors and experts of federal, central regional and university libraries, cultural institutes, as well as other institutions of science, education and culture attended it from 14 regions of the Russian Federation and from foreign countries. During the online broadcast of the meetings, there were recorded over one and a half thousand connections. The program included more than 50 reports, focused on theoretical problems of science studies and practical issues of organization of scientific activity. Summing up, the conference participants noted the importance of library science and proposed a set of specific measures, the implementation of which should help strengthen the regulatory framework for scientific activities in libraries, increase personnel staff; stimulate scientific creativity and research initiative; promote the spread of new scientific knowledge. The conference has important scientific and practical value. It demonstrated the current state of library science, allowed to identify and comprehensively discuss the most acute problems of its development and to outline steps to eliminate them. The conference materials contain a rich empirical base for further study of library science itself.

Bibliometrics is the discipline where quantitative methods were employed to probe the scientific communication process by measuring and analyzing various aspects of written documents. It helps to monitor the growth of literature and patterns of research. The present paper is based on the analysis of IP Indian Journal of Library Science and Information Technology (IJLSIT) with the help of bibliometrics parameters during the period 2016 to 2020. Among the several bibliometric parameters, the study utilizes mainly the number of articles per volume or year, authorship pattern, collaborative pattern, topmost authors, state-, designation-& affiliation-wise contribution, reference per article count, cited resources type, research trends and research interests. The research data of this study collected manually, analysed with the help of an MS Excel spreadsheet and distinguished according to different types of bibliometric elements. The findings of the study suggested that in IJLSIT, the maximum number of articles published in the year 2019 (25.74%), 53.47% (54) articles contributed by a single author, and the overall collaboration rate is 0.47. Furthermore, 90% (91) of articles contributed by Indian authors and Hemantha Kumar G.H. is the most productive author. Maharastra (18.81%) being the most contributed Indian state, Benue State University & Rayalaseema University (4.95%) being the most contributed institutions and College Librarians are the most designated contributors (20.79%). The study further revealed that 0-5 pages are the most common length, 6-10 references are the most common references used per article, and periodicals are the most commonly cited reference types. The area "Digital Library" is nurtured most among researchers, whereas, the year 2018, vol. 3, issue 1 consists of the maximum views number (18.01%) and the year 2020, vol. 5, issue 1 has the most number of downloads (22.92%).

The article considers the bibliographic database “Librarianship and Bibliography”, developed by the specialists of the Russian State Library in the context of other libraries and institutions that distribute resources related to library science. The author reveals the specifics of structure and composition of databases with similar resources, created by some central regional libraries of Russia and federal libraries of other departments. The authar touches upon the issue of foreign companies’ information support of studies in library science. This database was created using many years, experience in formation of information resources on culture and art, which have no analogues in Russia. The article presents the search capabilities of this bibliographic online resource and the practice of user interaction with it in 2016—2017. The author notes that the main body of records includes articles from monographs, scientific collections, conference proceedings and other publications. The article outlines the features of working with the database. The resource interface and the structure of its search fields are described. There are given some examples of its search fragments and navigation capabilities. Using statistical data, the author analyses the resorce access dynamics, user requests and the geography of user access to the database. The access leaders among the eight regions of the Russian Federation are Ural, Northwestern and Siberian Federal Districts. There is a stable interest observed in Siberian, Volga and Central Districts. The rating of the most popular search terms is made. The results of the study confirm the demand for the online resource among users. This is especially important in the conditions of low circulation of Russian scientific publications that significantly decreases their accessibility and reduces the ability to disseminate scientific knowledge among specialists.

In previous studies, full-text analyses and mining techniques have not been combined to identify and trace changes in the knowledge trends of library science over the past 20 years (1997–2016). Thus, to grasp the knowledge trends of library science at a fine-grained level, this study analyzes full-text journal articles from six top-ranked library science journals by applying text-mining techniques such as co-word analysis, text summarization, and topic modeling. Visualization tools were used to map the knowledge structure of library science. The findings indicate that, during the past 20 years, library science has developed into an interdisciplinary knowledge structure that integrates librarianship topics with a range of other fields, generating major topics that include the academic library, the digital library, research methodology, library marketing, information retrieval, digital information, document citation, and so on. In the past ten years, the library science discipline has focused increasingly on research methodology and evaluation and become more concerned with digital information management.

This study intends to discuss the interrelationships and impacts of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan’s five laws with those enhancements and changes in the field and also their research content for further study. Latest developments of information products and services in field of LIS are considered emanated from the ongoing technological innovations and compared effectiveness and efficiency of those innovations with his basic learning of Five Laws. So the study methodology chiefly involves studying his publications and examining the contents in perspective with contemporary changing profile of library and information science.

Library and information science (LIS) research is becoming more quantitative. However, statistics is not extensively taught within LIS research methods courses, and statistics courses are uncommon within LIS programs. Previous research on statistics in LIS revealed that researchers have mainly relied on descriptive statistics in publications. This article argues that LIS’s partner disciplines, such as sociology, emphasize statistical training more so than do LIS programs at the master’s level. Sociology serves as an appropriate comparison to LIS because of its central status in the development of both qualitative and quantitative research methods and its relevance for library science. The author analyzed the curricular requirements of 109 master’s degree programs (47 sociology and 62 LIS programs) and 81 research methods syllabi (60 in sociology and 21 in LIS). The analysis of master’s in LIS (MLIS) and sociology MA curricula revealed that MLIS students took 0.6 research methods courses while sociology MA students took 2.7 methods courses. LIS programs typically required one methods course, whereas sociology MA programs required three. LIS methods courses spent on average 19% of instructional time on statistics, whereas 64% of sociology MA programs’ instruction in methods focused on statistical analysis. 86% of LIS research methods courses covered descriptive statistics and only 38% of LIS courses discussed inferential statistics. Statistical training in LIS programs remains limited. LIS departments could approach statistical training as sociology has done by teaching inferential statistics and other advanced techniques. Thereafter, information professionals can publish more widely and provide improved research support.

The article considers the contradiction in concepts connected with key content of the library activity. Some fundamental documents use the term “library service”, others use “information and library service”, “library and information service” terms. The different content is also given to these concepts. The inconsistency is increased by the fact that since Soviet times the library services have often been understood as library activity in general. There is given the brief review of primarily positions on the conceptual framework of library service: library activity, work with readers, guidance of reading, library service, library and information service, information and library service. In violation of the Federal Law № 78-FZ “On Librarianship”, the term “library and information service” is enshrined in the names of textbooks, GOST R 7.0.103—2018 “Library and information service. Terms and definitions” and GOST R 7.0.104—2019 “Library and information services of scientific library. Types, forms and modes of delivery”. While library science is striving hard to integrate itself into information science, information science itself is far from recognising library and bibliographic science as an integral part of it. “Library service” is considered both as specific and general library science concept. The definition of “work” in relation to library science is given: it is the function of library staff to create values, provide benefits or meet the informational, cultural, educational needs of readers. The author proposes to intensify the concept of “library readers study”, to develop thoroughly its theory and methodology. The paper provides additional arguments in favour of the concept of “library readers study” in addition to the well-known ones. It is argued that in addition to revealing the links between the readers’ contingent and the library staff, it is necessary to reveal the links of the “readers’ contingent” subsystem with other subsystems of the first and second circuits of the library as a system.

Through the Order of the RF Ministry of Science and Higher Education of February 24, 2021, on the Nomenclature of Scientific Professions to be awarded academic degrees, the speciality 05.25.03 «Library science, bibliography, and bibliology» was excluded from this nomenclature. The concerns arouse that this speciality might be excluded from the educational programs. The post-graduate programs is to become the third level of higher education. One more attempt should be made to stand for our profession by referring to global precedents, i. e. to the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCE), adopted by the UNESCOGeneral Assembly in 2011, and to FOS (Revised field of science and technology, classification in the Frascati manual). The latter is the international classification of science and technology adopted and approved by 75% world countries to represent scientific disciplines and to unify world statistical data. In both classifications, library science is specified as an independent discipline within the social sciences unit.

The article examines the influence of an individual on the development of library science, on the example of Demyan Romanovich Novikov , the director of the library of the Belarusian Agricultural Academy in Gorki from 1920 to 1975. His biography is described, his contribution to the development and formation of the library during 55 years of his work as the director is traced. The article contains the memoirs of eyewitnesses, as well as historical facts testifying to the importance and significance of D. R. Novikov’s work. Special attention is paid to the activities of subsequent generations of librarians of the library of the Belarusian Agricultural Academy, which have been aimed at promoting the contribution of D.R. Novikov for the development of the library and the academy as a whole, for the bibliographic study of his publication heritage, for the preservation and memorialization of memory of him. It is proposed to use his activities as an example for training specialists in library science.

Actualization of the task of successful realization of the important social mission in the conditions of aggravation of a competition and digitalization motivates domestic libraries to establishment and strengthening of interaction in general. The purpose of the article is to represent interaction as a defining category of effective transformations and dynamic changes in modern domestic library science and practice. The methodology research consists in the application of general scientific and special methods, namely: analysis, synthesis and generalization, as well as comparative-historical, retrospective, problem-chronological methods. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the expansion of ideas about the importance of interaction for the development of the library and information sphere of the state. The analysis carried out in the article allows to state: multifunctional library interaction as a defining category of effective transformations and dynamic changes in modern domestic library science and practice is: 1) is an integral part of information and communication activities and is carried out on the principles of independence, equality and mutual benefit; 2) the optimal way to form a dialogic communicative paradigm for the development of world cultures and civilization in general for the sake of political stability and economic progress; 3) the key to the competitiveness of the library business of Ukraine, as a center of access to a much larger universe of knowledge in a global information environment; 4) an effective and promising tool for the implementation of the strategic task of integration into the world scientific, educational and cultural space of national culture and science; 5) the tested mechanism of mutual enrichment with social experience and affirmation of universal values.

Competition in the Global Era, which is currently getting tighter, demands every institution, especially Higher Education Institutions, to be able to produce alumni in accordance with the demands of the times. The orientation of learning outcomes in tertiary institutions is not seen from the scores obtained, but more than that it is expected that alumni who have graduated in tertiary institutions have the ability based on the internalization of knowledge, attitudes, skills, competencies and accumulated work experience. To find out and measure the quality of higher education institutions, one of which is tracing the tracks of alumni (Tracer Study). So that the evaluation of the competencies produced by higher education becomes an important thing to do so that the world of higher education is not separated and too far from the real world of work in society. To answer these challenges and needs, a library science study program based on KKNI was designed, 75% of which leads to practical work in the library to produce professional librarians. Based on the results of surveys and research, data shows that the waiting period for alumni is more than 50% under 6 months, even 27% of them have got a job before graduating. While the level of relevance / suitability of the course with the work of the alumni respondents, 81% answered very well.

What is lacking from the literature and practice of library print collection assessment is a mathematical function that can integrate variables and quantify the overall measurement of the collection as a final score for the library science practitioners and administrators. The study uses the information entropy to explain a mathematical procedure on how to define variables from the regular circulation statistics. Based on the assessment concepts of circulation statistics and user behavior, the study explores to develop mathematical functions and proposes a Collection-User Suitability index to quantify the suitability measurement of the overall collection and the user intention. The study then considers the extreme conditions to validate the functions and verifies the application of the function via empirical and simulated data. Finally, the authors developed a computing tool and uploaded it to GitHub for free access based on the study's results. It is hoped that library science practitioners and administrators can utilize the mathematical function.

The paper presents the review of the problematics and characteristics of the participants of the Interuniversity scientific and practical conference held at the Moscow State Institute of Culture and devoted to the 90th birth anniversary of N.S. Kartashov. Nikolay S. Kartashov (1928—2011) is an outstanding figure in the library science and practice, a well-known scientist and librarian, major organizer of librarianship in the USSR, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Culture of the USSR. For the first time he substantiated the principle of systematic approach to the study and organization of librarianship and developed the concepts of regional and comparative library science. In different years, he was in charge of the Department of library science at the East Siberian State Institute of Culture, he stood at the origins and headed the State Public Scientific and Technical Library of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, was the Director of the V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR. He was engaged in pedagogical activity at the Department of Library Science of the Moscow State Institute of Culture. The significance of the personality of N.S.Kartashov and the value of his scientific ideas in the context of the modern library science were objectified at the Conference. The emphasis was made on characterization of N.S. Kartashov as a scientist, manager and educator, on consideration of the topical issues of development of two main directions of his scientific heritage — regional and comparative library science. The problem-discussion reports, keynote presentations and practice-oriented papers presented at the Conference considered the theoretical, theory-methodological and methodological aspects of the declared subject. Of particular interest was the comprehension in the modern context of the proposed and substantiated by N.S. Kartashov the term “Regional Library Science”, as well as the described application capabilities of the actual use of this relevant concept in sectoral education and library practical activities. Along with the representative full-time participation at the conference, there was positioned an extensive block of poster presentations, which revealed the contribution of N.S. Kartashov in librarianship and library science, including methodological approaches and theoretical instruments of regional library science, the concept of library management on the basis of functional modelling, modernization of the system of territorial library services, etc.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to visualize the collaboration network among regions in library science (LS) in China. Using various methods and tools of social network analysis and geographical visualization, results were obtained, showing the structure and patterns of research collaborations in topological and geographical views, as well as the geographical distributions of contribution. Design/methodology/approach The sample includes all studies published in the top journal in library science in China from 2006 to 2015. First, co-occurrence data representing collaborations among regions was extracted from author affiliations. Second, the topological network of collaboration was generated by applying social network analysis tools and descriptive statistics, network indicators of the collaboration network and research communities were calculated. Third, the topological network was projected into a geographical map with corresponding coordinates and distances using geographical tools. Finally, the topological network maps and the geographical maps were produced for visualization. Findings The levels of contribution are very unbalanced between regions, and overall research collaboration is low. Beijing, Hubei and several other areas are central and significant regions in China; other regions are mostly connected with central ones through direct collaborations. Research collaborations in LS research in China are mostly distributed in the east and south of China, being centralized in the “Beijing–Hubei–Shanghai” triangle zone, as well as within the triangle’s extending zones. Finally, there are three distinct research communities that connect closely within themselves and loosely between them. The Beijing community is relatively centralized in geography, while other communities are scattered. Originality/value This study applied various methods and tools of social network analysis and geographical mapping analysis to reveal the collaboration structure and patterns among regions in LS research in China. Visualized maps in topological and geographical views help shed new light on research efforts.

Many individuals working in library and information organizations do not hold a master of library science (MLS) degree or other specialized library science credential. Recognizing that this professional gap could be addressed by diversified educational opportunities, the W. Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights developed an online bachelor's degree in library informatics and a series of professional development workshops. These initiatives dovetailed with programs being promoted across the university's entire academic curriculum. However, placing these degree and professional development programs within the library, rather than in a separate teaching department, was an uncommon arrangement. This arrangement has proved an efficient, sustainable structure for curriculum appropriate to undergraduate degrees and continuing education. This article will address the appropriateness of undergraduate and professional development levels of library science education, the sustainability of operating these programs within an academic library, and the vitality that this educational role has brought to Steely Library and its library faculty.

The video production for learning has been evident over the last few years especially when it involves aspects of the application of hardware and software for automation spaces. In Librarianship Undergraduate Degrees the need for practical learning focused on the knowledge of the requirements for library automation demand on teacher to develop an educational content to enable the student to learn through videos in order to increase the knowledge about information technology. Thus, discusses the possibilities of learning through mobile devices in education reporting an experience that took place with students who entered in March, 2015 (2015.1) Bachelor Degree in Library Science from the Universidade Federal do Cariri (Federal University of Cariri) in state of Ceará, Brazil. The literature review includes articles publicated in scientific journals and conference proceedings and books in English, Portuguese and Spanish on the subject. The methodology with quantitative and qualitative approach includes an exploratory study, where the data collection was used online survey to find out the experience of the elaboration of library automation videos by students who studied in that course. The learning experience using mobile devices for recording of technological environments of libraries allowed them to be produced 25 videos that contemplated aspects of library automation having these actively participated in production of the video and its publication on the Internet. A produção de vídeos para aprendizagem tem se evidenciado ao longo dos últimos anos, principalmente quando o assunto envolve aspectos relacionados à aplicação de hardware e software para automação de espaços. Nos Cursos de Biblioteconomia, a necessidade de aprendizagem prática voltada para o conhecimento dos requisitos para automação de bibliotecas exige do docente que ele desenvolva conteúdos educacionais que permitam ao discente aprender por meio de vídeos, com o intuito de incrementar o conhecimento sobre tecnologia da informação. Dessa forma, este artigo discute as possibilidades da aprendizagem por meio dos dispositivos móveis na educação, relatando uma experiência ocorrida com discentes que ingressaram no semestre 2015.1 do Curso de Biblioteconomia da Universidade Federal do Cariri, no estado do Ceará. O levantamento bibliográfico observou artigos de periódicos científicos, anais de eventos e livros em inglês, português e espanhol sobre o assunto. A metodologia com abordagem quanti e qualitativa abrange um estudo exploratório, cuja coleta de dados utilizou-se de questionário online para conhecer a experiência de elaboração de vídeos sobre automação de bibliotecas, pelos discentes que estudavam no referido curso. Estes participaram ativamente da produção do vídeo e de sua publicação na Internet. A experiência de aprendizagem usando dispositivos móveis para gravação dos ambientes tecnológicos das bibliotecas permitiu que fossem elaborados 25 vídeos que contemplavam aspectos relativos à automação de bibliotecas.&nbsp

The paper presents a bibliometric study on the fit of Lotka’s law on Information Science & Library Science journals indexed in Social Science Citation Index of Journal Citation Report from the period 1956 to 2014. The parameters of the Lotka's law model, C and α, were found using the linear least squares method and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied to estimate the kindness of adjustment of the results to the Lotka’s distribution. It was found that the pattern of publication of the LIS category articles fits to Lotka’s law.

Library science is one of the fastest-growing fields of knowledge, especially in Southeast Asian countries. This study aims to determine library science publications in Southeast Asia with approaches, namely bibliometrics, social network analysis, almetrics, and linear regression test. This study's data were taken from the Scopus web to obtain bibliographic data from library science publications in ten countries published in 1960-2019. Bibliometrics analysis uses Microsoft Excel calculations, mapping/scientometrics uses Vos viewer and Gephi, while altmetrics analysis uses altmetric.com. Based on the bibliometric analysis, the results showed that the most productive country is Malaysia, with 287 articles. The most sponsored publication’s country is Malaysia, with 57 articles. International journals that are popular as destinations for publication of library science articles in Southeast Asia are the Malaysian Journal of Library and Information Science (MJLIS). The country that has the most impact factor for citation is Singapore, with 4.922 citations. The country with the highest level of collaboration is Malaysia, with a total collaboration of 243 articles. The research results are based on social network analysis that the country that has the highest influence is Malaysia with a degree centrality (DC) of 301, closeness centrality (CC) of 0.61, and between centrality (BC) 0.66. The results of the study are based on altmetrics analysis. The country with the most shares/mentions on social media is Singapore, with 5.223 shares/mentions, the second is Malaysia 1467 shares/mentions. Meanwhile, based on the linear regression test that there is an influence between social media and citation, it is indicated by the Sig value of 0.001. Meanwhile, the large correlation between social media and citations was 97.8%.

Resumen: Elegir una carrera universitaria es una decisión compleja que impacta el desarrollo profesional, personal y el futuro de todo individuo. Como apoyo a este proceso, las universidades ayudan a estudiantes que están terminando la secundaria y que se encuentran en una transición hacia la educación superior, mediante la organización de ferias vocacionales; por lo anterior, el presente artículo narra la experiencia de divulgación de las carreras ofrecidas por la Escuela de Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información (EBCI) de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) en el marco de la Feria Vocacional 2019, donde se explica cómo se diseñaron e implementaron las estrategias de divulgación a través de la creación de diferentes actividades experienciales sobre labores cotidianas de la persona profesional en Bibliotecología, la generación de material gráfico y audiovisual sobre la carrera y la confección de recursos para apoyar el discurso expuesto. Así mismo, se evalúan las estrategias y los recursos utilizados tanto con el personal colaborador como con la comunidad estudiantil que visitó el evento. Se concluye que las actividades experienciales son recibidas por los participantes con mayor anuencia y que les permite tener una visión más real de la carrera, además, se recomienda utilizar este tipo de recursos para futuras ferias vocacionales. Abstract: Choosing a university career is a complex decision that impacts the professional, personal and future development of every individual. To support this process, universities offer grants to students who are finishing their secondary studies and who are in a transition to higher education, by organizing vocational fairs. This article narrates the experience of dissemination of the careers offered by the School of Library and Information Sciences of the University of Costa Rica within the framework of the 2019 Vocational Fair. It explains how the dissemination strategies were designed and implemented by creating of different experiential activities on the daily tasks of the professional person in library science, the generation of graphic and audiovisual material on the career and the preparation of resources to support the exposed discourse. Likewise, the strategies and resources used are evaluated both with the collaborating staff and with the student community that visited the event. Finally, it is concluded that the experiential activities are received by the participants with greater consent and that it allows them to have a more real vision of the career, in addition, it is recommended to use this type of resources for future vocational fairs.

The article discusses the results of studying a document flow of English-speaking dissertations in the field of library science, bibliography and bibliology, as well as information management for a centenary period. To solve the research tasks, a scientometric approach has been applied including sources, bibliometric, historical methods, as well as elements of the content analysis. The author has carried out a thematic selection of English-language dissertations from several foreign sources, in particular, databases by UMIProQuest Co and some others. The paper reveals development trends of library information science abroad for hundred years. The author compiled and published an annotated list of English-language theses on this topic with the translation into Russian.

Die Bibliothek als Wissensmaschine und das Lesen als ihr Motor ist eine überkommene Vorstellung des Industriezeitalters. Auch das Informationsparadigma, das Information als Ding und IT-Strukturen als neutral betrachtete, entspricht nicht mehr den Erfordernissen unserer Zielgruppen im digitalen Datenzeitalter. Nicht Informationsressourcen, Medien, Technik und Gebäude sind der „Bestand“ einer Bibliothek, sondern die kreativen, Wissen schaffenden Mitglieder ihrer Communities mit all ihren Geschichten und sehr diversen Ansichten. Es ist Zeit, nicht mehr auf Daten und Information, sondern auf die Fragen der Produktion und des Verständnisses von Wissen als Kern einer Bibliothekswissenschaft zu setzen. A Library is not just an information distributing machine and reading not its steam as the paradigm of the industrial age has seen it. Even the conception of the Library as Information Agency established in the 20th century does not meet any more the needs of our communities. In the age of data’ism the Library is not about Information as a thing and neutral IT infrastructures. It needs a more critical world view. Instead of data and information a new library science should focus on knowledge and knowing. The communities library serve are the true collections; librarians the weavers of community narratives and understandings.

Given that many frontiers and hotspots of science and technology are emerging from interdisciplines, the accurate identification and forecasting of interdisciplinary topics has become increasingly significant. Existing methods of interdisciplinary topic identification have their respective application fields, and each identification result can help researchers acquire partial characteristics of interdisciplinary topics. This paper offers an integrated method for identifying and predicting interdisciplinary topics from scientific literature. It integrates various methods, including co-occurrence networks analysis, high-TI terms analysis and burst detection, and offers an overall perspective into interdisciplinary topic identification. The results of the different methods are mutually confirmed and complemented, further overviewing the characteristics of the interdisciplinary field and highlighting the importance or potential of interdisciplinary topics. In this study, Information Science and Library Science is selected as a case study. The research has clearly shown that more accurate and comprehensive results can be achieved for interdisciplinary topic identification and prediction by employing this integrated method. Further, the integration of different methods has promising potential for application in knowledge discovery and scientific measurement in the future.

The aim of this paper is to extend the conversation about the correlation between collaboration and citation impact in articles in Information Science & Library Science journals by analyzing this correlation’s behavior using a power scaling law approach. 28,131 articles that received 215,693 citations were analyzed. The number of these articles that were published through collaboration accounts for 69%. In general, the scaling exponent of multi-authored articles, both international and domestic, increases over time while the exponent of single-authored papers decreases. The citation impact and collaboration patterns exhibit a power law correlation with a scaling exponent of 1.34 ± 0.02. Citations to multi-authored articles increased $$2^{1.34}$$ or 2.53 times each time the number of multi-authored papers doubled. The Matthew Effect is stronger for multi-authored papers than for single-authored. The scaling exponent for the power law relationship of domestic multi-authored papers was 1.35 ± 0.02. The citations to domestic multi-authored articles increased $$2^{1.35}$$ or 2.55 times each time the number of domestic multi-authored articles doubled. Contrary to previous studies we found that the Matthew Effect is stronger for domestic multi-authored papers than for international multi-authored ones.

The study describes general issues in regional encyclopedia publishing. Some problems of making of the regional encyclopedias by library science were analyzed in connection with the development of a library policy in Ukrainian regions; the current state of development the encyclopedia publishing and making of the library encyclopedias in Ukraine is highlighted.

Continuity of knowledge is the objective regularity of library science development. Library science is characterized by non- cumulated model of cognitive potential growth. The processes of new knowledge generation, actualization and complementation go on continuously, although unevenly, with varying degrees of intensity at different historical stages. The goal of the article is rationale for continuity and dynamics as the main instruments of library science knowledge development. The article is based on data analyses (including content-analyses) in the framework of methodology of inductive approach. Traditions and innovations are the main categories that provide continuality and dynamics in library knowledge growth and its further enhancement. The author considers the ideological impact on library science development, shows the influence of political changes on library science and the professional community. The article gives examples of Marxist ideology blocking the creation of new scientific ideas, determining the nature and content of research programs and the methodological tools chosen by scientists. Continuity in science can be strengthen by organization and fulfilling microhistorical researches. Portraits can creates a good basis for biographical and prosopographic research. Portraits of researchers presented in scientific, popular science, memoirs and other texts give an idea not only about their lives, but also about the features of the historical era. The role of creating portraits, as well as biographical and prosopographical research, is very important for understanding the processes of dynamics and continuity in the development of library science knowledge. Studying the professional career of practitioners and researchers allows getting answers to questions related to the origins of ideas, concepts, and theories, and helps tracing the complex path of transition from practical activities to library science. These types of research help to identify the social background of researchers, understand their beliefs and motivation to improve practice based on the use of scientific knowledge. Biographical and prosopographical research contributes to the removal of many misconceptions on the development of library science at different historical stages. Local history research is also important for studying and understanding the development of library science and the features of professional and personal life of researchers who have contributed to its cognitive enrichment. The integration of the results of local history, biographical and prosopographical research allows the creation a more complete picture of the development of library science in the historical perspective.

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of content of scientific-practical and theoretical collection "Libraries of National Academies of Sciences: problems of functioning, tendencies of development". Revised topics of publications, the author's composition, the purpose and readership of the publication for the entire existence of the publication on topical issues of bibliography, library science, bibliography and social communications are considered. The priority directions of development of modern academic library are determined on the example of rubrics of the collection as a complexly structured system of scientific knowledge: general, special, partial, which cover all directions of information and library support of modern science. The meaningful coverage of published research is a qualitative indicator of the cultural and informational life of scientific libraries, which have significant intellectual potential and valuable historical and cultural funds. The issues of the collection of scientific works cover the set of topical issues of development of the information sphere of society and achievements of scientific libraries in the context of the evolution of information exchange due to the introduction of advanced information and telecommunication technologies. Thus, with the development of librarianship and the growing social role of libraries, library science is a multidisciplinary interdisciplinary science with extensive interdisciplinary connections. It is concluded that the modern organization of library science requires the formation of innovative strategies for the development of scientific libraries based on the integration of all information and communication potential of each country. The articles published in the collection are of high scientific level and novelty, their topics reveal the priority areas of academic library, they are a significant contribution to the development of modern theory and practice of academic library.

The article considers the project activities and socio-humanitarian work of the Department of Library Science and Information Science at Grinchenko University for five years. The aim of the article is to highlight the activities and achievements of both teachers and students of the department during the implementation of the new educational strategy. To achieve this goal, the following research methods are used: analysis of the source base, monitoring of the site of the department, description of the educational and project activities of the department. Attention is paid to the renewal of educational programmes, the introduction of a new specialty, the results of students’ work in the Competence Centers and projects that develop flexible skills of students. The results are an analysis of practice-oriented learning, a description of the implemented plans and active socio-humanitarian activities of the staff of the department and students, interaction with partners. Significant projects aimed at popularising the activities of the Department of Library Science and Information Science, the Institute of Journalism and Grinchenko University are highlighted.

Purpose This paper aims to review changes related to library and information science (LIS) education over the past 20 years. Design/methodology/approach The literature reviewed for this paper is obtained by internet and database searches and personal communication and is conducted to look for similarities and differences in LIS program changes. A time period for the review is set from 1997 to 2017, and is completed between January and October of 2017. The majority of the searches are conducted in English. Findings Numerous similarities in changes were evidenced in areas of LIS education, such as curriculum, identification of new training and skills, instructional methods, follow-up on graduates, research on the current job market and post-graduate training support. Differences were identified in areas of capability of program change due to country regulation and course change flexibility. Originality/value A review of global program changes is relevant for LIS programs to realize and maintain their value in today’s workforce. It is significant for LIS programs all over the globe to realize that their shifts in curricular and program changes are similar to other LIS programs or where differences can be equally important.

PurposeThis research paper aims to present a specific outline of the library decision makers’ perceptions and the hiring patterns and acceptability of online library science degree holders in academic libraries across the Arab world. It also investigates whether such degrees compare favorably with traditional degrees or not.Design/methodology/approachThis study data were collected using an online questionnaire, which was sent out to 74 library managers in academic libraries across the Arab world. The libraries were selected from theQS stars Worldwide University Ranking for the Arab Region 2015, which ranks the Arab world’s top 100 universities.FindingsThe findings reveal no significant relationship between the hiring decision of library managers and the degree type, whether earned through traditional education or online. The analysis notes different factors influencing the hiring practices and acceptability of online library science degree holders, the most influential factors being candidate skills, accreditation of programs and candidate experiences.Originality/valueTo date, no study has investigated whether employers in academic libraries across the Arab world perceive online library science graduate degrees “less than” or “equal to” those obtained through traditional education. This study will contribute to the literature on the acceptance of online degrees in general and in the library science field in particular. The study is a significant contribution to knowledge for students, job seekers and employers alike.

Information workers are not born information fluent. Like other students, incoming library science students enter graduate programs with a broad range of information and technology skills. The aim of this study was to determine if systematically designed online tutorials would be effective in preparing university students with information literacy skills. A needs assessment was conducted to identify what information and technology skills faculty expected of entering library students. A series of 46 online tutorials were used to address the required competencies. Pre-tests were designed to determine whether a particular student needed to complete a given tutorial. Post-tests and proficiency projects were used to determine whether students reached mastery. The results of the study indicated that this type of individualized instruction was effective in preparing library science students with information literacy skills. While the study focused on the library science program, the results may have applications for other types of information literacy instruction. There is a need to expand this individualized, self-paced tutorial approach to other information literacy courses in other disciplines.

The findings of the scientometric analysis of national journals in library science and bibliography are presented. Based on Science Index data, the rating of the journals under the subject headings “Culture” and “Information Studies” of the Russian Science Citation Index by citations number, number of citations excluding self-citation, two-year impact-factor, and two-year impact factor excluding self-citation is drawn up. The authors argue that these results can be extrapolated on the national library science. The article is based on the paper presented at the Second World Professional Forum “The Book. Culture. Education. Innovations” - “Crimea-2016”.

The article examines the main milestones in the development of international activities of the Department of Library Science and Informmology of the Institute of Journalism at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University in 2016–2021. The participation of teachers and students of the department in international academic mobility programmes, as well as in international research projects is analysed. Indicators for the development and submission of grant applications are demonstrated, in particular with regard to the winning applications. The scientific publications of the teachers of the department, which were published in the publications indexed in the scientometric databases “Scopus” and “Web of Science”, are analysed. Generalised data on the participation of teachers and students of the department in Ukrainian and international scientific conferences are presented.

Library science is an interdisciplinary field which combines the principles and practices of library administration. The disciplines that are allied with library science are education, management, and Information technology. The main objective of any library is to amass, organize, preserve and disseminate information assets. The information society development demands to re-define the position and objectives of all the institutions which work with information, knowledge, and culture. Of these, media and education have been discussed in the India actively. Libraries have been a marginal idea. First, the general development of the information society is pushing to re-evaluation of all the institutions which work with information, data, and knowledge - indirectly also with culture. In this connection the roles of education and media have been discussed already quite largely also in the India. But libraries - as well as other memory institutions like archives and museums - have not been considered. Still, there is a clear need in the information society to maintain an institution which is concentrating in collecting and organizing information and offering general admittance to it. Until now, this work has been underestimated, but I argue the situation will change. Libraries are especially important now when the whole thought of education is stressing more and more independent knowledge and acting. All citizens must be able to find and use information. It is the key raw material - but it is a zero resource, if there are no access points to it and if documents are in chaotic order.
