Co-crystal structures of GLIC, a bacterial ligand-gated ion channel, in complex with monocarboxylate and dicarboxylate derivatives are reported. It is shown that binding occurs at two pharmacological sites in the extracellular domain, which is in agreement with the reported effect of some carboxylates as allosteric modulators of GLIC., GLIC is a bacterial homologue of the pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs) that mediate the fast chemical neurotransmission of nerve signalling in eukaryotes. Because the activation and allosteric modulation features are conserved among prokaryotic and eukaryotic pLGICs, GLIC is commonly used as a model to study the allosteric transition and structural pharmacology of pLGICs. It has previously been shown that GLIC is inhibited by some carboxylic acid derivatives. Here, experimental evidence for carboxylate binding to GLIC is provided by solving its X-ray structures with a series of monocarboxylate and dicarboxylate derivatives, and two carboxylate-binding sites are described: (i) the ‘intersubunit’ site that partially overlaps the canonical pLGIC orthosteric site and (ii) the ‘intrasubunit’ vestibular site, which is only occupied by a subset of the described derivatives. While the intersubunit site is widely conserved in all pLGICs, the intrasubunit site is only conserved in cationic eukaryotic pLGICs. This study sheds light on the importance of these two extracellular modulation sites as potential drug targets in pLGICs.

Sugarcane is the most produced agricultural commodity in tropical and subtropical regions, where it is primarily used for the production of sugar and ethanol. The latter is mostly used to produce alcoholic beverages as well as low carbon biofuel. Despite well-established production chains, their respective residues and by-products present unexploited potentials for further product portfolio diversification. These fully or partially untapped product streams are a) sugarcane trash or straw that usually remain on the fields after mechanized harvest, b) ashes derived from bagasse combustion in cogeneration plants, c) filter cake from clarification of the sugarcane juice, d) vinasse which is the liquid residue after distillation of ethanol, and e) biogenic CO2 emitted during bagasse combustion and ethanol fermentation. The development of innovative cascading processes using these residual biomass fractions could significantly reduce final disposal costs, improve the energy output, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and extend the product portfolio of sugarcane mills. This study reviews not only the state-of-the-art sugarcane biorefinery concepts, but also proposes innovative ways for further valorizing residual biomass. This study is therefore structured in four main areas, namely: i) Cascading use of organic residues for carboxylates, bioplastic, and bio-fertilizer production, ii) recovery of unexploited organic residues via anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, iii) valorization of biogenic CO2 sources, and iv) recovery of silicon from bagasse ashes.

Recognition of anionic species plays a fundamental role in many essential chemical, biological, and environmental processes. Numerous monographs and review papers on molecular recognition of anions by synthetic receptors reflect the continuing and growing interest in this area of supramolecular chemistry. However, despite the enormous progress made over the last 20 years in the design of these molecules, the design of receptors for chiral anions is much less developed. Chiral recognition is one of the most subtle types of selectivity, and it requires very precise spatial organization of the receptor framework. At the same time, this phenomenon commonly occurs in many processes present in nature, often being their fundamental step. For these reasons, research directed toward understanding the chiral anion recognition phenomenon may lead to the identification of structural patterns that enable increasingly efficient receptor design. In this review, we present the recent progress made in the area of synthetic receptors for biologically relevant chiral carboxylates.

This paper presents a method for the determination of alkylphenol, alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEO) and alkylphenol ethoxycarboxylates (APEC) in the aqueous and solid phase of wastewater samples. Quantification was by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Method detection limits for the analytes in the dissolved phase were 1.2 to 9.6 ng l -1 for alkylphenol, short chain (n = 1–3) APEO and APEC, and 0.1 – 4.1 ng l -1 for long chain alkylphenol polyethoxylates. The method detection limit for adsorbed phase samples ranged from 6 to 60 ng g -1 for AP, short chain APEO and APEC; and long chain APEO ranged from 0.5 – 20 ng g -1 . The method was utilised to evaluate the removal of these compounds over a trickling filter wastewater treatment plant. The major biotransformation products of nonylphenol polyethoxylate, nonylphenoxy acetic acid and nonylphenoxy monoethoxy acetic acid were present in the final effluent at concentrations ranging from 35 – 1797 ng l -1 . Short chain APEO were present in higher proportions in the suspended solids , due to their higher affinity to particulate matter compared to the long chain oligomers.

It also highlights the importance of these methodologies as potential tools in the study of differences between habitats and nutrient acquisition, particularly N. This study used three different species of Salvinia cultured in the absence of combined N or in the presence of either NO3 or NH+4 as N sources. The interaction between NO3 or NH+4 as N source and organic acid metabolism, and the information on diazotrophy from the organic acid measurements, were also examined. Nevertheless, the results presented may not be used per se to assign diazotrophy. Carboxylate (C-A) levels in the different Salvinia species are much lower than the norm for bryophytes and tracheophytes, consistent with previously published work on Azolla. This might be related to the aquatic life form of these plants, since they seem to have no potential to increase the availability of Fe or P by the acidification of their rooting medium (water) that a larger net synthesis of organic acids, with cation H+ exchange, could achieve.
