During 1991–1992, Northwestern University conducted a special emphasis year on the topic, “The connections between topology and representation theory”. Activities over the year culminated in a conference in May 1992 which attracted over 120 participants. Most of the plenary lectures at the conference were expository and designed to introduce current trends to graduate students and nonspecialists familiar with algebraic topology. This volume contains refereed papers presented or solicited at the conference; one paper is based on a seminar given during the emphasis year.

This book consists of twenty-nine articles contributed by participants of an International Conference in Algebraic Topology held in July 1991 in Oaxtepec, Mexico. In addition to papers on current research, there are several surveys and expositions on the work of Mark Mahowald, whose sixtieth birthday was celebrated during the conference. The conference was truly international, with over 130 mathematicians from fifteen countries. It ended with a spectacular total eclipse of the sun, a photograph of which appears as the frontispiece. The papers range over much of algebraic topology and cross over into related areas, such as $K$-theory, representation theory, and Lie groups. Also included is a chart of the Adams spectral sequence and a bibliography of Mahowald's publications.

In 1989, Edward Witten discovered a deep relationship between quantum field theory and knot theory, and this beautiful discovery created a new field of research called Chern-Simons theory. This field has the remarkable feature of intertwining a large number of diverse branches of research in mathematics and physics, among them low-dimensional topology, differential geometry, quantum algebra, functional and stochastic analysis, quantum gravity, and string theory. The 20-year anniversary of Witten's discovery provided an opportunity to bring together researchers working in Chern-Simons theory for a meeting, and the resulting conference, which took place during the summer of 2009 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, included many of the leading experts in the field. This volume documents the activities of the conference and presents several original research articles, including another monumental paper by Witten that is sure to stimulate further activity in this and related fields. This collection will provide an excellent overview of the current research directions and recent progress in Chern-Simons gauge theory.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth Arolla Conference on Algebraic Topology, which took place in Arolla, Switzerland, from August 20–25, 2012. The papers in this volume cover topics such as category theory and homological algebra, functor homology, algebraic $K$-theory, cobordism categories, group theory, generalized cohomology theories and multiplicative structures, the theory of iterated loop spaces, Smith–Toda complexes, and topological modular forms.

This book, which is the proceedings of a conference held at Memorial University of Newfoundland, August 1983, contains 18 papers in algebraic topology and homological algebra by collaborators and associates of Peter Hilton. It is dedicated to Hilton on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The various topics covered are homotopy theory, $H$-spaces, group cohomology, localization, classifying spaces, and Eckmann-Hilton duality. Students and researchers in algebraic topology will gain an appreciation for Hilton's impact upon mathematics from reading this book.

This volume contains the proceedings of the CATS4 Conference on Higher Categorical Structures and their Interactions with Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Topology and Algebra, held from July 2–7, 2012, at CIRM in Luminy, France. Over the past several years, the CATS conference series has brought together top level researchers from around the world interested in relative and higher category theory and its applications to classical mathematical domains. Included in this volume is a collection of articles covering the applications of categories and stacks to geometry, topology and algebra. Techniques such as localization, model categories, simplicial objects, sheaves of categories, mapping stacks, dg structures, hereditary categories, and derived stacks, are applied to give new insight on cluster algebra, Lagrangians, trace theories, loop spaces, structured surfaces, stability, ind-coherent complexes and 1-affineness showing up in geometric Langlands, branching out to many related topics along the way.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Stanford Symposium on Algebraic Topology: Applications and New Directions, held from July 23–27, 2012, at Stanford University, Stanford, California. The symposium was held in honor of Gunnar Carlsson, Ralph Cohen and Ib Madsen, who celebrated their 60th and 70th birthdays that year. It showcased current research in Algebraic Topology reflecting the celebrants'broad interests and profound influence on the subject. The topics varied broadly from stable equivariant homotopy theory to persistent homology and application in data analysis, covering topological aspects of quantum physics such as string topology and geometric quantization, examining homology stability in algebraic and geometric contexts, including algebraic $K$-theory and the theory of operads.

The articles in this volume are based on the talks given at two special sessions at the AMS Sectional meetings held in 2004. The articles cover various topological and asymptotic aspects of group theory such as hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, asymptotic cones, Thompson's group, Nielsen fixed point theory, homology, groups acting on trees, groups generated by finite automata, iterated monodromy groups, random walks on finitely generated groups, heat kernels, and currents on free groups.

This volume presents the proceedings from the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference on Homotopy Methods in Algebraic Topology held at the University of Colorado (Boulder). The conference coincided with the sixtieth birthday of J. Peter May. An article is included reflecting his wide-ranging and influential contributions to the subject area. This book contains the proceedings of the Real Algebraic Geometry-Topology Conference, held at Michigan State University in December 1993. Presented here are recent results and discussions of new ideas pertaining to such topics as resolution theorems, algebraic structures, topology of nonsingular real algebraic sets, and the distribution of real algebraic sets in projective space.

This book will provide readers with an overview of some of the major developments in current research in algebraic topology.
