It is still important and difficult for a biped robot to optimally generate the stable walking trajectory, because the mechanical limitations of the given biped robot should be also considered carefully. In this paper, we assume that different walking trajectories enable to be generated according to various set of weights of torques loaded in each partial joint (e.g., ankle, knee, and hip joint). We present a method for generating various bipedal walking trajectories corresponding to a set of weighted torques. For this purpose, Tchebychev method and sequential quadratic programming are employed to optimize single cost functions consisting in a set of weight torques. Some notations and constraints introduced in [1] are used and modified in this paper.

China is the most productive seaweed farming country in the world and her seaweed imports and exports have a significant impact on global seaweed trade commodities and food security. Nevertheless, few studies had delved into the main characteristics and development of China's seaweed farming industry. This paper aims to narrow this research gap by analyzing trade patterns in China's seaweed products and the international competitiveness of seaweed product by using the international market share index (IMS), the trade competitiveness index (TC), and revealed comparative advantage index (RCA) from 2002 to 2017. The results showed that Japan, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Chile, Peru, and the Republic of Korea are China's main trade partners, the total trade value of China's seaweed products has grown rapidly, its imports have gradually exceeded exports, the trade deficit continues to expand, and its competitiveness keeps decreasing. The reasons for this trend may include the changing seaweed trade commodity structure, product differentiation, increased government support in competing countries, and trade barriers among the trade partners. We propose actively expanding international trade markets, establishing a strong seaweed product processing industry to develop high value-added seaweed products, optimizing the trade commodity structure, and differentiating of seaweed products to improve the competitiveness of China's seaweed products.

The conventional wisdom is that American universities transfer technologies more rapidly and more effectively than their European counterparts. While this appears to be true, it is important to note that there are substantial cultural, legal, and regulatory differences between the two regions, and even within Europe. We believe that European universities can enhance their effectiveness in technology transfer if this function is given more visibility and prestige, enhanced public support, and formal procedures are implemented to facilitate benchmarking. In this paper, we examine some of the differences in university technology transfer in Europe and the U.S., and discuss these new approaches, which have recently been fully supported by the European Commission.

Background: The TAPUAKI programme aimed to improve Pacific women’s, their partners and families’ knowledge and confidence about pregnancy and parenting so they can make informed choices about their health and that of their infants. The programme consisted of six two-hour blocks of antenatal classes run over six consecutive weeks.Aim: To evaluate the TAPUAKI programme for the effectiveness and delivery of its curriculum to pregnant mothers.Methods: Both paper survey questionnaires and focus group interviews (talanoa) were used for the evaluation. Out of 32 participants who attended the TAPUAKI programme, 13 agreed to take part in the evaluation (a response rate of 41%). There were 3 sites (from 2013-2014) where the programme was piloted: Henderson, Onehunga and Otara. The 13 participants were Samoan, Cook Islands Māori or Tongan ethnicity, all aged between 17 and 40 years old. In addition, there were 2 female facilitators at each site who delivered the curriculum. All six facilitators agreed to take part in the evaluation. Findings: Participants reported that their knowledge about pregnancy and parenting had increased as a result of the programme. Specifically, these topics were nutrition, giving birth, breastfeeding and safe sleeping practices. The programme helped to change some incorrect practices and beliefs that were held by those participants who already had children.Conclusion: The TAPUAKI programme increased the women’s knowledge and confidence about pregnancy and parenting.

Aim: of this paper is to review the recent literature on the relationship between ectopic fat accumulation and cardiovascular disease. Data synthesis: Ectopic fat is an important predictor of metabolic (in particular insulin resistance) and cardiovascular disease, carrying more risk than general fat accumulation. Recent studies have shown a link between ectopic fat accumulation, as cardiac (epicardial or intra-myocardial fat) and/or visceral and/or hepatic fat, and development of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and hypertension. Due to increasing demand for donor organs, "extended criteria" donors are increasingly considered for liver transplantation, including elderly donors and donors after cardiac death. The grafts of this subgroup of donors share a major risk to develop significant features of ischemia reperfusion injury, that may eventually lead to graft failure. Ex-situ machine perfusion technology has gained much interest in liver transplantation, because represents both a useful tool for improving graft quality before transplantation and a platform for the delivery of therapeutics directly to the organ. In this review, we survey ongoing clinical evidences supporting the use of elderly and DCD donors in liver transplantation, and the underlying mechanistic aspects of liver aging and ischemia reperfusion injury that influence graft quality and transplant outcome. Finally, we highlight evidences in the field of new therapeutics to test in MP in the context of recent findings of basic and translational research.

Purpose Many nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria have initiated programmes targeted at addressing food insecurity, but without any major significant breakthrough. This necessitates the call for inclusion of social network institutional framework into the food and nutrition security policy of many developing countries. This is touted as an important social safety net needed for farming households’ economic advancement and welfare. Consequent on this, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the importance of social networks in building resilience against food insecurity among farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach Data collected from a sample of 297 smallholder farmers during 2015/2016 agricultural production season were analysed using descriptive statistics to describe farmers’ notable characteristics. However, Foster–Greer–Thorbecke indices vis-à-vis food consumption expenditure-metrics technique was used to evaluate the food security profile of the respondents. Similarly, ordinary least square and two-stage least square (2SLS) models were applied to investigate the effects and “reverse causality” in the social networks food security model. Findings The study findings indicated that about 48.15 per cent of the smallholder farmers are food insecure. Similarly, the study revealed that age (ppppppp Social implications There is an urgent need for pragmatic policies that support systematic and organized social groups and networks formation in the rural/agrarian areas across Nigeria. Originality/value A widely accepted view of economic theory posits that traditional capitals (physical, economic/financial and human) drive households’ welfare including food security status. However, this study has established the relevance of social networks as an important component of human well-being. Apparently, this study also established the exogeneity of social networks in the framework of households’ food security status.

Secondary arc extinction time is an important factor, which influences system stability because it directly affects the reclosing time. However, few reports exist on a field data of the secondary arc extinction time on transmission lines. This paper describes the investigation results of secondary arc extinction characteristics by analyzing voltage wave shapes during the lightning faults on 550 kV transmission lines. Recovery voltages and secondary arc currents on each transmission line during faults were calculated to consider correlation with the secondary arc extinction time. The secondary arc extinction time is estimated by the existing formula, the secondary arc current and the recovery voltage required for one second reclosing are evaluated.

In framed buildings, the application of high strength (HS) steel in composite beams is not only beneficial in reducing the self-weight of the structure, but the increased-strength attribute of HS steel is also utilised because most of the steel section in composite beams is in tension and buckling is not an issue. Despite this, published research of HS steel–concrete composite beams is quite limited, and it is not yet considered in current national design standards. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed in this paper to investigate the bending behaviour of simply supported HS steel–concrete composite beams. Both geometric and material non-linear behaviour are taken into account. The numerical model is validated by using a number of existing experimental results, and then employed to undertake a parametric analysis. Forty beams with various steel grades and degrees of shear connection are modelled, and the results are compared with those obtained utilising current design standards. The bending strength, stiffness and slip at the interface are investigated, and the effects of the steel grade and degree of shear connection are elucidated. New design approaches are proposed in order to estimate the bending behaviour of simply supported composite beams with HS steel, providing more reliable and economical design solutions for such members.

To find a partner company is a critical element of benchmarking, partly because it requires the establishment of a win-win situation, partly because of the magnitude of resources and effort needed. In this paper we propose to use the results of an international survey as a basis for reference points and to use the questionnaire as an instrument for assessing the company’s goals, performance and practice. A benchmarking system is proposed which indicate relevant factors to benchmark. The way in which reference points are established is demonstrated by means of examples.

Background: In a previous paper, we have demonstrated that: (1) local injection of corticosteroids for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is as effective as decompressive surgery, at 1-year follow-up; and (2) surgery has an additional benefit in the 2-year follow-up. In this study, we assess the long-term outcomes of both therapies in an observational extension of the patients originally enrolled in our randomized clinical trial. Methods: Patients were included in an open, randomized clinical trial, comparing injections versus surgery in CTS. After the end of the clinical trial, patients received the treatment prescribed by their general practitioner or specialist. Therapeutic failure was defined as the need of any new therapeutic intervention on the involved wrist. Comparison between groups was made using Cox multiple regression analysis. Estimation of the accumulated incidence of new therapeutic failure was made considering the withdrawal as a competitive risk (Gooley’s test). Results: Of 163 randomized wrists at the beginning of the study, only 148 were available at the final follow-up. The mean follow-up was 6.3 and the median was 5.9 years. In the long-term follow-up, the accumulated incidence of therapeutic failure in the surgery group was 11.6% versus 41.8% in the injection group. The Cox multiple regression analysis showed a risk of failure associated with injection group of 4.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.1-9.8; P < .0001). Conclusions: In long-term follow-up, surgery seems more effective than local corticosteroid injections in primary CTS. Nonetheless, about 58% of the patients in the injection group will not need further therapeutic interventions during the follow-up.

Hierarchical clustering is one of effective methods in creating a phylogenetic tree based on the distance matrix between DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequences. One of the well-known methods to calculate the distance matrix is k-mer method. Generally, k-mer is more efficient than some distance matrix calculation techniques. The steps of k-mer method are started from creating k-mer sparse matrix, and followed by creating k-mer singular value vectors. The last step is computing the distance amongst vectors. In this paper, we analyze the sequences of MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome - Coronavirus) DNA by implementing hierarchical clustering using k-mer sparse matrix in order to perform the phylogenetic analysis. Our results show that the ancestor of our MERS-CoV is coming from Egypt. Moreover, we found that the MERS-CoV infection that occurs in one country may not necessarily come from the same country of origin. Input is considered one of the most important factors in the acquisition of lexical and grammatical skills. Input has been found to interact with other factors, such as learner cognitive skills and the circumstances where language is heard. Language learning itself has sometimes been found to enhance cognitive skills. Indeed, intensive contact with another language has been found to sometimes boost cognitive skills, even in intensive instructed settings, such as immersion programs (bilingual advantage hypothesis). In this paper, we report a cross-sectional study to assess grammar learning of 79 fourth grade German students learning L2 English in two immersion schools. Verbal teacher input was assessed using the Teacher Input Observation Scheme (TIOS, Items 14–25), and the learners’ L2 grammar comprehension was tested with the ELIAS Grammar Test II. Cognitive skills, including phonological awareness, working memory, and non-verbal intelligence, were determined using standardized assessment procedures. The results show that verbal input quantity and quality correlated significantly with the learners’ L2 grammar comprehension. None of the cognitive skills moderated the effect of input on grammar comprehension but all predicted it independently. The combination of L2 input and phonological awareness was found to be the most robust predictor of L2 grammar comprehension.

This Innovative Practice Work in Progress presents progress in developing exercises for high school students incorporating level-appropriate mathematics into robotics activities. We assume mathematical foundations ranging from algebra to precalculus, whereas most prior work on integrating mathematics into robotics uses only very elementary mathematical reasoning or, at the other extreme, is comprised of technical papers or books using calculus and other advanced mathematics. The exercises suggested are relevant to any differential-drive robot, which is an appropriate model for many different varieties of educational robots. They guide students towards comparing a variety of natural navigational strategies making use of typical movement primitives. The exercises align with Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

In this paper, we present SoDa, an irradiance-based synthetic Solar Data generation tool to generate realistic sub-minute solar photovoltaic (PV) output power time series, that emulate the weather pattern for a certain geographical location. Our tool relies on the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) to obtain irradiance and weather data patterns for the site. Irradiance is mapped onto a PV model estimate of a solar plant’s 30-min power output, based on the configuration of the panel. The working hypothesis to generate high-resolution (e.g. 1 second) solar data is that the conditional distribution of the time series of solar power output given the cloud density is the same for different locations. We therefore propose a stochastic model with a switching behavior due to different weather regimes as provided by the cloud type label in the NSRDB, and train our stochastic model parameters for the cloudy states on the high-resolution solar power measurements from a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU). In the paper we introduce the stochastic model, and the methodology used for the training of its parameters. The numerical results show that our tool creates synthetic solar time series at high resolutions that are statistically representative of the measured solar power and illustrate how to make use of the tool to create synthetic data for arbitrary sites in the footprint covered by the NSRDB.

In analysing big data for finite population inference, it is critical to adjust for the selection bias in the big data. In this paper, we propose two methods of reducing the selection bias associated with the big data sample. The first method uses a version of inverse sampling by incorporating auxiliary information from external sources, and the second one borrows the idea of data integration by combining the big data sample with an independent probability sample. Two simulation studies show that the proposed methods are unbiased and have better coverage rates than their alternatives. In addition, the proposed methods are easy to implement in practice.

The distribution system is demanded to be more efficient, more flexible and more intelligent due to the continued growth of the electricity loads, the high efficiency of energy utilization and the environmental protection. The traditional distribution systems are facing the challenge of evolving from passive networks to the active distribution networks (ADN) with the integration of multiple controllable resources. This paper presents an optimal operation and schedule model of the ADN, considering a variety of controllable resources such as distributed generations, battery storages and interruptible loads. To solve the optimization problem, a modified fuzzy adaptive PSO assisted by Kriging model (KMA-MFAPSO) is developed in this paper. In KMA-MFPSO, a novel constraint handling technique (CHT) based on the PSO is proposed to handle the constraints effectively. In addition, under the premise of ensuring the accuracy of the calculation, the Kriging model is used in KMA-MFAPSO to calculate the power flow the ADN approximately, which greatly speeds up the solving process. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is tested on a modified IEEE-123 system. The optimal results obtained by the proposed method are compared with the results obtained by using other solving algorithms. The simulation results indicate that KMA-MFAPSO is very robust and fast to solve the optimization problem so that it can be used in practical systems.

Simultaneous occurrences of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and thyroid storm have long been known, but only a few cases have been reported to date. Both these endocrine emergencies demand timely diagnosis and management to prevent adverse outcomes. Due to the similarities in their clinical presentation, DKA can mask the diagnosis of thyroid storm and vice versa. This case report describes a patient with Graves’ disease who presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. He was found to have severe DKA without an explicit history of diabetes mellitus. Further evaluation revealed that the patient also had a concomitant thyroid storm that was the likely cause of his DKA. Early recognition and appropriate management of both conditions resulted in a favourable outcome. This paper emphasises that a simultaneous thyroid storm diagnosis should be considered in patients with DKA, especially those with a known history of thyroid disorders.

In this paper we describe a cyberattack against 2 well-known wearable devices. The attacker presented in this paper is an “honest but curious” Internet Service Provider (ISP) sitting somewhere in the path between the device and the cloud. The ISP launches the attack when the smartbands try to synchronize their data with the permanent cloud storage. By launching its attack, this “honest but curious” ISP is able to learn much personal information about the users of the smartbands, including the frequency of measuring the users’ heart rate and weight; the number and duration of workouts; as well as whether (i) sleep or (ii) steps were recorded on a given day. We show that privacy leaks might occur even when the transferred data are fully encrypted, and the representative mobile application utilizes state-of-the-art security mechanisms: certificate pinning, and source code obfuscation.

This paper presents a collaboratively adaptive vibration monitoring system that captures high-fidelity structural vibration signals induced by pedestrians. These signals can be used for various human activities’ monitoring by inferring information about the impact sources, such as pedestrian footsteps, door opening and closing, and dragging objects. Such applications often require high-fidelity (high resolution and low distortion) signals. Traditionally, expensive high resolution and high dynamic range sensors are adopted to ensure sufficient resolution. However, for sensing systems that use low-cost sensing devices, the resolution and dynamic range are often limited; hence this type of sensing methods is not well explored ubiquitously. We propose a low-cost sensing system that utilizes (1) a heuristic model of the investigating excitations and (2) shared information through networked devices to adapt hardware configurations and obtain high-fidelity structural vibration signals. To further explain the system, we use indoor pedestrian footstep sensing through ambient structural vibration as an example to demonstrate the system performance. We evaluate the application with three metrics that measure the signal quality from different aspects: the sufficient resolution rate to present signal resolution improvement without clipping, the clipping rate to measure the distortion of the footstep signal, and the signal magnitude to quantify the detailed resolution of the detected footstep signal. In experiments conducted in a school building, our system demonstrated up to 2× increase on the sufficient resolution rate and 2× less error rate when used to locate the pedestrians as they walk along the hallway, compared to a fixed sensing setting.

Root canal treatment is achieved by chemo-mechanical debridement of the root canal system followed by filling. The filling material 'entombs' residual bacteria and acts as a barrier which prevents the entrance of oral microorganisms and reinfection of the root canal system through microleakage. However, filling with contemporary root filling materials such as gutta-percha offers limited long-term resistance to microorganisms; as a result other materials such as Resilon have been investigated as alternatives. The aim of this review was to analyse the literature to consider whether Resilon is a suitable root canal filling material. A MEDLINE and Cochrane library search including various keyword searches identified several papers which investigated or discussed Resilon or RealSeal/Epiphany. Analysis of the literature demonstrated that the bulk of the literature is in vitro in nature, based largely on leakage-type studies, and demonstrates a wide variety of methodologies with conflicting findings; as a result meaningful conclusions are difficult. Within the limit of these in vitro studies Resilon appears to perform adequately in comparison to gutta-percha, however, as a result of the questionable merit of such studies, it cannot presently be considered an evidence-based alternative to the current gold standard gutta-percha. It is imperative that before Resilon is considered as a replacement material, a better understanding of the physical properties of the resin sealer and the reality of the adhesive 'monoblock' are elucidated. The literature also demonstrates a paucity of quality long-term clinical outcome studies which will need to be addressed before firm conclusions can be reached.

This paper provides a regulatory perspective from the viewpoint of the potential licensee, the US Department of Energy (DOE), on the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report on Yucca Mountain standards published in August 1995. The DOE agrees with some aspects of the NAS report; however, the DOE has serious concerns with the ability to implement some of the recommendations in a reasonable manner.

This paper presents an analysis of carbon credit earning by the Solar Energy Park (SEP) at I.I.T. Delhi, New Delhi, India. The solar energy park consists of a mud house, various hybrid photovoltaic thermal (PV/T) systems with stand alone photovoltaic (SAPV) power supply. The analysis is based on experimental and theoretical annual performance of each system. The life cycle cost analysis is based on the annual performance and carbon credit earning of the Solar En- ergy Park. The computation of the carbon credit earned by the Solar Energy Park as per the norms of the Kyoto Protocol under New Delhi climate condition has also been carried out. Estimation of carbon credits, which will accrue to the nation if one such Solar Energy Park is built in each district/ block/Village in the country, has also been evaluated. 'Return on the investment' analysis on the basis of the life cycle cost analysis has also been made. It is seen that the cost of power gener- ated by the SAPV system (USD 0.14/kWh, USD 0.125, USD 0.116 for life cycle of 30, 40 and 50 years respectively) will be cheaper than the cost of power generated by conventional systems. It may be due to the improved technology and the economy of scale.

The functional model is one of the key development foundations to understand, anticipate and reflect products and technical systems, since the interplay of functions directly reflect the intended and their expected behaviors. Furthermore, with the help of functions, it is possible to implicitly describe a significant portion of the characteristics of the product under development. The development of a functional structure requires significant knowledge and experience; often engineers have a difficult task to describe the functionality of a product in a solution neutral form. During such development phases, questions arise about the possibility of exchanging functions between products, which is a nontrivial task. To explore the nature of exchanging functions, the authors conducted research about functional flows of two complex mechatronic products. Functional flows have shown the ability to establish relationships between functions of two products. The analysis reveals aspects of functional modeling in terms of the hierarchy of functions and their interrelationships. The paper considers an approach to build a common functional model, determining the structure of functional decomposition and determining the functional flow of a product. A clear decomposition and structure of product functions show the possibility of establishing links between products, in order to exchange functions. The constructed concept of the common functional model demonstrates its theoretical and practical use as a framework for building the individual functionality of a new product. This paper concludes with an outlook to future steps and directions to explore the potential for function exchanging.

In this article, we intend to draw attention on the new Similarity measure for Fuzzy sets based on the extended definition of complementation. The old existing measures are based on traditional Zadehian Theory of Fuzzy sets where it is believed that there is no difference between Fuzzy membership function and Fuzzy membership value for the complement of a Fuzzy set which is already proved to be wrong. As a result, the previous Similarity measures have been proved illogical from the standpoints of new defi nition of complementation of Fuzzy set based on the fact that Fuzzy membership function and Fuzzy membership value for the complement of a Fuzzy set are two different things. Accordingly, we have already established a new Similarity measure with the help of exte nded definition of complementation using reference function. In this paper, an effort has been put forward to show the validity of the results obtained from our proposed measure with the help of traditional Hamming distance and Euclidean distance measures.

Magnetic circuit components have long been the largest and most difficult components to miniaturize. Printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication methods cannot achieve small diameter, high aspect-ratio vias for high winding turn numbers to achieve high inductance, and microelectronics methods cannot achieve the high-quality and thick ferrite core materials. In this paper, we present an alternative breakthrough method of printed circuit fabrication to significantly reduce the effective via diameter for embedded magnetic devices, boosting the inductance per unit area. To reduce the effective via diameter, high-density via plugs are ex-situ fabricated and shaped, and then embedded into PCB substrate in the same process as standard magnetic core embedding. The structure of the plug is such that precise placement within the substrate, or alignment to the plug with the winding pattern, is not necessary. Devices presented in this paper use via plugs with an effective diameter of 40 μm and a theoretically unlimited aspect ratio, though refinements in the plug fabrication process are expected to reduce the via diameter down to 10μm. The process is experimentally demonstrated with a 14-turn racetrack shaped transformer; novel diagnostic methods using magneto-optic garnet films to image current paths are also demonstrated.

In this paper, we propose to tackle egocentric action recognition by suppressing background distractors and enhancing action-relevant interactions. The existing approaches usually utilize two independent branches to recognize egocentric actions, i.e., a verb branch and a noun branch. However, the mechanism to suppress distracting objects and exploit local human-object correlations is missing. To this end, we introduce two extra sources of information, i.e., the candidate objects' spatial location and their discriminative features, to enable concentration on the occurring interactions. We design a Symbiotic Attention withObject-centric featureAlignmentframework (SAOA) to provide meticulous reasoning between the actor and the environment. First, we introduce an object-centric feature alignment method to inject the local object features to the verb branch and noun branch. Second, we propose a symbiotic attention mechanism to encourage the mutual interaction between the two branches and select the most action-relevant candidates for classification. The framework benefits from the communication among the verb branch, the noun branch, and the local object information. Experiments based on different backbones and modalities demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Notably, our framework achieves the state-of-the-art on the largest egocentric video dataset.

Recent years have witnessed a tremendous increasing of first-person videos captured by wearable devices. Such videos record information from different perspectives than the traditional third-person view, and thus show a wide range of potential usages. However, techniques for analyzing videos from different views can be fundamentally different, not to mention co-analyzing on both views to explore the shared information. In this paper, we take the challenge of cross-view video co-analysis and deliver a novel learning-based method. At the core of our method is the notion of "joint attention", indicating the shared attention regions that link the corresponding views, and eventually guide the shared representation learning across views. To this end, we propose a multi-branch deep network, which extracts cross-view joint attention and shared representation from static frames with spatial constraints, in a self-supervised and simultaneous manner. In addition, by incorporating the temporal transition model of the joint attention, we obtain spatial-temporal joint attention that can robustly capture the essential information extending through time. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on the standard cross-view video matching tasks on public datasets. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the learnt joint information can benefit various applications through a set of qualitative and quantitative experiments.

The popularity of egocentric cameras and their always-on nature has lead to the abundance of day long first-person videos. The highly redundant nature of these videos and extreme camera-shakes make them difficult to watch from beginning to end. These videos require efficient summarization tools for consumption. However, traditional summarization techniques developed for static surveillance videos or highly curated sports videos and movies are either not suitable or simply do not scale for such hours long videos in the wild. On the other hand, specialized summarization techniques developed for egocentric videos limit their focus to important objects and people. This paper presents a novel unsupervised reinforcement learning framework to summarize egocentric videos both in terms of length and the content. The proposed framework facilitates incorporating various prior preferences such as faces, places, or scene diversity and interactive user choice in terms of including or excluding the particular type of content. This approach can also be adapted to generate summaries of various lengths, making it possible to view even 1-minute summaries of one's entire day. When using the facial saliency-based reward, we show that our approach generates summaries focusing on social interactions, similar to the current state-of-the-art (SOTA). The quantitative comparisons on the benchmark Disney dataset show that our method achieves significant improvement in Relaxed F-Score (RFS) (29.60 compared to 19.21 from SOTA), BLEU score (0.68 compared to 0.67 from SOTA), Average Human Ranking (AHR), and unique events covered. Finally, we show that our technique can be applied to summarize traditional, short, hand-held videos as well, where we improve the SOTA F-score on benchmark SumMe and TVSum datasets from 41.4 to 46.40 and 57.6 to 58.3 respectively. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) traffic emulators have been designed for demonstrating the performance of various protocols and services in ATM networks under user-defined traffic conditions. Analytical tools and traffic measurements show that specific traffic conditions can be emulated by using the superposition of various stochastic processes. This paper presents a generic method for implementing stochastic processes using dedicated hardware and describes how this method has been used for implementing a real-time traffic emulator of ATM virtual channels.

To assess the publication rate of full papers presented as abstracts at the 1995 meeting of the European Society of Anaesthesiologists, and to assess factors that might predict subsequent full publication.All abstracts presented at the meeting and published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia (Suppl 1, 1995) were included. To verify subsequent full publication, a MEDLINE search was performed and validated. We studied the average time from the meeting to publication, the first author's country, the subspeciality, the publishing journal of the full report, the type of presentation (oral or poster), the object of investigation, and the quality of research design and of statistical reporting in the abstract.Of 472 meeting abstracts, 199 (42.2%) were eventually published. The average (+/- SD) delay between meeting and publication was 16.8 (15.6) months (range 24-60 months). Most papers (79.4%) had been published within 3 yr of the meeting. Circulation, pharmacology and intensive care papers had the highest rates of publication. Sixty-three journals attracted papers, with the British Journal of Anaesthesia publishing most (n = 29). No difference in subsequent publication was found between oral and poster presentations. Randomized trials and animal research were more likely to be published. The number of authors or their positions differed between the abstract and the full publication in 145 cases (72.9%); the first author was changed in 43 cases.Less than half of the abstracts accepted at the 1995 European Society of Anesthesiologists' meeting were subsequently published in journals indexed by MEDLINE in the 3 yr following the meeting. Many changes in authorship occurred between the abstract and the full publication. The study architecture and the object of investigation predicted full publication.

The next-generation mechanically-cooled germanium spectrometer has been developed. GeMini (MINIature GErmanium spectrometer) has been designed to bring high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy to a range of demanding field environments. Intended applications include short-notice inspections, border patrol, port monitoring and emergency response, where positive nuclide identification of radioactive materials is required but power and liquid cryogen are not easily available. GeMini weighs 2.75 kg for the basic instrument and 4.5 kg for the full instrument including user interface and ruggedized hermetic packaging. It is very low power allowing it to operate for 10 hours on a single set of rechargeable batteries. This instrument employs technology adapted from the gamma-ray spectrometer currently flying on NASA’s Mercury MESSENGER spacecraft. Specifically, infrared shielding techniques allow for a vast reduction of thermal load. This in turn allows for a smaller, lighter-weight design, well-suited for a hand-held instrument. Three working prototypes have been built and tested in the lab. The measured energy resolution is 3 keV fwhm at 662 keV gamma-rays. This paper will focus on the design and performance of the instrument.

The parameters estimation of cubic-phase signal based on local polynomial Wigner distribution (LPWD) was proposed in the author’s previous paper, and it outperforms the traditional algorithms in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of maneuvering target. The contribution of this paper is that the asymptotic statistical performance of LPWD for the parameters estimation of cubic-phase signal is analyzed theoretically, and the asymptotic statistical results are derived for all the estimated parameters via the first-order perturbation principle. Then, the LPWD is used in ISAR imaging of ship target with complex motion, and the high-quality instantaneous ISAR images can be obtained.

The purpose of this paper is threefold: first to look at all the classifications of capacity, second to define and analyze subjectively a particular type of capacity to be called "psychometric capacity" and third, to quantify this new concept of capacity in order that it can be measured and analyzed objectively. Capacity is classified in a matrix form, first by its micro and macro aspects and then by type; statutory, optimum and psychometric. Psychometric capacity is that amount of risk to be measured in terms of premium dollars written which an underwriter is willing to take in exchange for the return which he expects to earn from the premium. To measure psychometric capacity, an equation, the hyperbolic tangent function, is used. This function has characteristics which are similar to the utility curve of an individual who is averse to risk. The inputs for this function are obtained from three simple questions rather than a series of complicated questions as in the case of a utility index. The primary use of psychometric capacity is to devise a supply curve for an insurance company so that its operation can be simulated for planning and decision making purposes. In recent years many people associated with the insurance industry have become increasingly concerned with the "capacity problem." Now that profits for the industry are up, this problem has been downgraded in importance. However, several important aspects of this situation remain unsolved. This includes the availability of convenient workable definitions and standard measures for all types of capacity. The purpose of this paper is threefold: first to look at all the classifications of capacity, second to define and analyze subjectively a particular type of capacity to be called "psychometric capacity" and third, to quantify this new concept of capacity in order that it can be measured and analyzed objectively. An exploratory research investigation into the creation of ‘privately owned publicly accessible spaces’ (POPS) in Toronto, Ontario and a critical review of the process used to secure these spaces and the subsequent agreements made. This paper seeks to answer if land use planners are able to better mediate the use of POPS as a means of providing open space to communities in high-density areas. This report includes the timeline illustrating the development of Toronto’s POPS program followed by a discussion on Toronto’s increase growth and development and the suitability of POPS as a contributing strategy for diminishing new park and open space assets and a high level breakdown of the legal mechanisms currently in place to help facilitate new POP spaces. Interviews with individuals from both the public and private sectors were conducted, which produced a generalized model outlining how POPS in Toronto are secured.

This paper investigates the control and safety of a series of maglev trains moving on multi-span simply supported bridges with the foundation settlements. To control the dynamic response of the maglev trains, a PI (proportional-integral) controller with constant tuning gains is applied. The finite element results indicate that the influences of the rail irregularities are obvious. However, the allowable vertical settlement and the Y-deflection of the bridge, which is caused by the X-rotation can be significantly improved when the lateral electromagnetic force is enlarged. This paper presents an experimental investigation of comparisons in attitudes towards risk between risk managers and non-risk managers. The two groups of managers responded to a number of hypothetical business decisions and their risk-taking attitude in each decision was measured by expressing the degree to which their actual choice differed from the expected monetary value as a fraction of the absolute value of the expected monetary value. Fifty per cent of the decisions involved a prospect of profit or break even, while the remainder held out only the prospect of a loss or no loss. A significant difference was detected in the attitudes of managers in each group. There was a great similarity in attitude over all subjects in those decisions involving profit but in potential loss-producing problems the risk managers were considerably more risk averse. Rather than resulting in a contempt for loss the risk managers' familiarity with loss-producing events would seem to have led them to a far higher degree of caution. The adaptability of non-risk managers to the loss situation together with the methods of management education are both called into question by these findings.

Variants of the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) gene are the most common cause of monogenic obesity. In this situation; while obesity cannot be controlled with diet and exercise, it was shown that Glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) provide weight loss in short term. In this paper, we present our experience with Liraglutide treatment in an adolescent patient carrying MC4R gene variant. A female patient had admitted first at the age of 12.5 years with a complaint of progressive weight gain. She had a marked excess of appetite since infancy. In the physical examination of the pubertal female patient with a body mass index (BMI) of 36.1kg/m2 (3.48 SDS), there was no pathological finding except diffuse acanthosis nigricans. Laboratory examinations revealed only insulin resistance. Weight loss couldn't be achieved with lifestyle changes, metformin and orlistat treatments In genetic examination, a sporadic heterozygous c.206T>G(p.I69R) variant (reported previously) was found in the MC4R gene. GLP-1 RA Liraglutide treatment was initiated and a loss of 19.2% reduction was achieved in the patient's body weight and BMI at the end of 32 weeks. However, the patient, whose treatment compliance was disrupted due to significant gastrointestinal complaints, returned to her former weight within a few months after treatment was stopped. In our case carrying a pathogenic variant in the MC4R gene, decrease of appetite and weight loss were achieved with Liraglutide treatment, but this situation could not be maintained. In such cases, there is a need for effective and tolerable treatment options.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the death of cardiomyocytes caused by a lack of energy due to ischemia. Nutrients supplied by the blood are the main source of cellular energy for cardiomyocytes. Sodium butyrate (NaB), a gastrointestinal nutrient, is a short-chain fatty acid (butyric acid) that may act as an energy source in AMI therapy. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) microspheres loaded with NaB (PP-N) are synthesized to prolong the release of NaB and are injected into ischemic zones in a Sprague-Dawley rat AMI model. Here, this study shows that PP-N can significantly ameliorate cardiac dysfunction in AMI, and NaB can specially bind to Sirt3 structure, activating its deacetylation ability and inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species, autophagy, and angiogenesis promotion. The results indicate that NaB, acting as a nutrient, can protect cardiomyocytes in AMI. These results suggest that the gastrointestinal nutrient NaB may be a new therapy for AMI treatment, and PP-N may be the ideal therapeutic regimen.

Environmental awareness consists in the way human beings understand the environment. We observe that relation between humans and the natural environment is a concern related to the currently environmental and social. Thus, this paper aims to identify what we call as environmental perception in students from a 6th grade elementary state school in Sorriso, Mato Grosso. For this case study, we used a semi structured questionnaire with open and closed questions for a group of 63 students. After the answer’s analysis phase, for some previously selected questions, were created categories and tabulated, for other questions, data’s were analyzed and demonstrated in charts. As results, as quoted by several authors, we observed that the environmental and sight perception of the students are coherent for schoolchildren in this age, however, the authors reinforce that the development of projects concerning environmental education are still needed., A percepção ambiental consiste na forma como o ser humano compreende o meio ambiente. Observando a relação do homem com o ambiente natural é uma preocupação pertinente ao quadro ambiental e social, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo identificar aquilo que chamamos de percepção ambiental de alunos de 6° ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola estadual de Sorriso, Mato Grosso. Para este estudo de caso, foi utilizado um questionário semiestruturado com perguntas fechadas e abertas, para um grupo de 63 estudantes. Após a análise do conteúdo das respostas, para algumas questões previamente selecionadas, foram criadas categorias e tabeladas, para outras, os dados foram analisados e demonstrados em tabelas. Foi possível observar que a percepção ambiental dos alunos e a visão de meio ambiente é coerente com o citado por diversos autores para estudantes dessa idade, no entanto, reforçam que ainda há uma necessidade de desenvolvimento de projetos voltados à educação ambiental.

Purpose Proximal hamstring tendinopathy (PHT) presents as localised lower buttock pain with tasks such as squatting and sitting. It is a condition that occurs at all ages and levels of sporting participation and can cause disability with sport, work, and activities of daily living. This paper details a pilot trial protocol for investigating the effectiveness of individualised physiotherapy compared to extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on pain and strength in people with PHT. Methods The study is an assessor-blinded, pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT). One hundred participants with PHT will be recruited from the local community and sporting clubs. Participants will be randomised to receive six sessions of either individualised physiotherapy or ESWT, with both groups also receiving standardised education and advice. Primary outcomes will be global rating of change on a 7-point Likert scale, and the Victorian Institute of Sport—Hamstring (VISA-H) scale, measured at 0, 4, 12, 26 and 52 weeks. Secondary outcomes will include sitting tolerance, the modified Physical Activity Level Scale, eccentric hamstring strength, modified Tampa scale for kinesiophobia, the Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Screening Questionnaire Short Form (ÖMPSQ-SF), Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) for average and worst pain, participant adherence, the Pain Catastrophizing scale, satisfaction scores, and quality of life. Data will be analysed on an intention to treat basis, with between-group effects estimated using linear mixed models for continuous data and Mann Whitney U tests for ordinal data. Conclusions This pilot RCT will compare individualised physiotherapy versus ESWT for PHT. The trial will determine feasibility and estimated treatment effects to inform a definitive trial in the future. Women who were previously treated for breast cancer (BC) are an important particular subgroup of women at intermediate BC risk. Their breast follow-up should be planned taking in consideration a 1.0-1.5 % annual rate of loco-regional recurrences and new ipsilateral or contralateral BCs during 15-20 years, and be based on a regional/district invitation system. This activity should be carried out by a Department of Radiology integrating screening and diagnostics in the context of a Breast Unit. We recommend the adoption of protocols dedicated to women previously treated for BC, with a clear definition of responsibilities, methods for invitation, site(s) of visits, methods for clinical and radiological evaluation, follow-up duration, role and function of family doctors and specialists. These women will be invited to get a mammogram in dedicated sessions starting from the year after the end of treatment. The planned follow-up duration will be at least 10 years and will be defined on the basis of patient's age and preferences, taking into consideration organizational matters. Special agreements can be defined in the case of women who have their follow-up planned at other qualified centers. Dedicated screening sessions should include: evaluation of familial/personal history (if previously not done) for identifying high-risk conditions which could indicate a different screening strategy; immediate evaluation of mammograms by one or, when possible, two breast radiologists with possible addition of supplemental mammographic views, digital breast tomosynthesis, clinical breast examination, breast ultrasound; and prompt planning of possible further workup. Results of these screening sessions should be set apart from those of general female population screening and presented in dedicated reports. The following research issues are suggested: further risk stratification and effectiveness of follow-up protocols differentiated also for BC pathologic subtype and molecular classification, and evaluation of different models of survivorship care, also in terms of cost-effectiveness.

Localization of sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is very important since it associates spatial context with the data collected by sensor nodes and used in applications. Rapid development of wireless sensor technologies and wide applications of wireless sensor networks have also made security in sensor localization a primary concern as well as a great challenge. Without adequate security measures, the performance of sensor localization, e.g., the accuracy of localization results, cannot be ensured in hostile environments. In this paper, we propose a trust-based secure sensor localization scheme (TSLS) for WSNs following the theory of neural network (NN). The proposed TSLS scheme can ensure that unknown sensor nodes will get credible information to perform localization through the evaluation of beacon nodes in a WSN. The evaluation model is comprised of the evaluation of both the identity and the behavior of beacon nodes as well as a filtering mechanism to deal with the slander behaviors between beacon nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed TSLS scheme can improve the accuracy of sensor localization in hostile environments for both static and dynamic WSNs.

This paper presents a general and systematic approach for geometric error modeling of machine tools due to the geometric errors arising from manufacturing and assembly. The approach can be implemented in three steps: (1) development of a linear map between the pose error twist and source errors within machine tool kinematic chains using homogeneous transformation matrix method; (2) formulation of a linear map between the pose error twist and the error intensities of a machine tool; (3) combination of these two models for error separation. The merit of this approach lies in that it enables the source errors affecting the compensatable and uncompensatable pose accuracy of the machine tool to be explicitly separated, thereby providing designers and/or field engineers with an informative guideline for the accuracy improvement by suitable measures, i.e. component tolerancing in design, manufacturing and assembly processes, and error compensation. Two typical multi-axis machine tools are taken as examples to illustrate the generality and effectiveness of this approach.

This paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding the consequences of the widespread adoption of race-neutral alternatives' to conventional racial affirmative action policies in college admissions. A simple model of applicant competition with endogenous effort is utilized to show that, in comparison to color-conscious affirmative action, these color-blind alternatives can significantly lower the efficiency of the student selection process in equilibrium. We examine data on matriculates at several selective colleges and universities to estimate the magnitudes involved. It is shown that the short-run efficiency losses of implementing color-blind affirmative action (in our sample) are four to five times as high as color-conscious affirmative action.

In 2020, Berlin introduced a rigorous rent-control policy responding to soaring prices by capping rents: the Mietendeckel (rent freeze). The German Constitutional Court revoked the policy only one year later. Although successful in lowering rents during its duration, the consequences for Berlin’s rental market and close-by markets are per se not clear. This article evaluates the short-term causal supply-side effects in terms of prices, quantities, and landlords’ strategic behavior. We develop a theoretical framework capturing the key features of first-generation rent control policies and Berlin-specific aspects. Using a rich pool of detailed rent advertisements, predictions are tested, and further empirical causal inference techniques are applied for comparing price trajectories of dwellings inside and outside the policy’s scope. Mechanically, advertised rents drop significantly upon the policy’s enactment. A substantial rent gap along Berlin’s administrative border emerges, and rapidly growing rents in Berlin’s (unregulated) adjacent municipalities are observed. Landlords started adopting a hedging strategy insuring themselves against the risk of contractually long-term fixed low rents following a potentially unconstitutional law. Whereas this hedge was beneficial for landlords, the risk was completely borne by tenants. Moreover, the number of available properties for rent dropped significantly, a share of which appears to be permanently lost for the rental sector. This hampers a successful housing search for first-time renters and people moving within the city. Overall, negative consequences for renters appear to outweigh positive ones. Hybrid networks are networks capable of switching data at multiple levels (optical and IP packet level) by means of multi-service optical switches. As a result of that, huge flows at the IP-level may be moved to the optical-level, which is faster than the packet-level. Such move could be beneficial since congested IP networks could be off-loaded, leaving more resources for other IP flows. At the same time, the flows switched at the optical-level would get better Quality of Service (QoS). In order to achieve this beneficial move, huge IP flows have to be properly detected at the packet-level and lambda-connections are to be established for them at the optical-level. Two approaches are currently used for that purpose: the first is based on conventional management techniques and the second is based on GMPLS signaling. Both approaches mostly depend on human intervention, which can be error prone and slow. The idea proposed in this paper to overcome this problem consists of adding self-management capabilities to the multi-service optical switches. The optical switches would then be responsible for automatically identifying IP flows, and establishing and releasing lambda-connections for such flows. The main goal of this paper is therefore to propose an architecture for the self-management of lambda-connections in hybrid networks.

Single chip processor performance has improved dramatically since the inception of the four-bit microprocessor in 1971. This is due in part to technological advances, (i.e., faster devices and greater device density), but also because of the adoption of architectural approaches well suited to the opportunities and limitations of VLSI. The most appropriate are those that effectively reduce off-chip memory accesses and admit to a regular pipelined implementation. The over-riding goal of pipelining is to achieve “single cycle execution”, i.e., instructions appear to execute in a single processor cycle. Today’s RISC processors are close to realizing this goal, and the next generation will reduce the cycles per instruction even further. In this paper, we will review the design issues and the proposed architectures for high performance VLSI processors.

An investigation into an aerodynamic optimization benchmark case that exhibits multimodality is presented using a global optimization approach. The recently suggested case 6 of the AIAA Aerodynamic Design Optimization Discussion Group involves the drag minimization of a rectangular NACA0012 wing subject to lift and root bending moment, as well as other geometric constraints. In this paper, optimization of that case using a state-of-the-art constrained population-based global optimization framework is presented. Shape control is achieved via a hierarchical application of the radial basis function domainelement approach. Three different fidelity of optimization cases are performed to investigate the multimodality of various aspects of the full problem, with four independent runs of each case being performed. When considering chord optimization, the optimizer converges to two independently identifiable minima with very similar performance. When adding dihedral and sweep variation, further multimodality is introduced, though this multimodality is reasonably well defined, with minima including forward and rearward sweep, and an upward and downward winglet. Introducing thickness variables leads to a highly multimodal problem due to the coupling between the chord and thickness variables. Thetheoretical minimum drag for this case is 24.7 counts, which a number of the runs get close to achieving.

This paper reports on current initiation and prevalence rates, in Western Australia, differentiating 'any' breastfeeding with 'exclusive' breastfeeding whilst exploring patterns and reasons for stopping breastfeeding. The results presented are part of a larger study examining women's perceptions of care and wellbeing in the early postnatal period. A cross sectional survey was used to examine infant feeding practices during the hospital stay and at 9 weeks post birth from Western Australian women with a registered live birth between February and June 2006. Data obtained from 2,669 women revealed a 93% (n = 2,472) initiation rate of any breastfeeding. More multiparous women (73.5%) were exclusively breastfeeding in hospital compared to primiparous women (65.2%), which decreased to 57.1 and 49.2%, respectively at 9 weeks. Of those who had ceased by 9 weeks, more multiparous women (71.1%) ceased before 3 weeks. Reasons cited for ceasing in order of frequency were insufficient milk supply, infant related reasons, pain and discomfort and emotional reasons. Younger maternal age, primiparous women, lower maternal education levels, offering a combination of breast milk and formula in hospital and caesarean birth were significant independent predictors of early cessation. Although initiation rates including "any" breast milk are meeting NHMRC dietary guidelines of 90%, the 60% target of exclusive breastfeeding is not being achieved for 3 months or in fact at 9 weeks. Targeted support for at risk groups such as younger, less well-educated, primiparous women must continue. Evidence based policies to protect breastfeeding must address the practice of offering formula to breastfed infants in hospital and the impact of increasing interventions such as caesarean births.
