Is it really better to print everything, including software models, or is it better to view them on screen? With the ever increasing complexity of software systems, software modeling is integral to software development. Software models facilitate and automate many activities during development, such as code and test case generation. However, a core goal of software modeling is to communicate and collaborate. Software models are presented to team members on many mediums and two of the most common mediums are paper and computer screens. Reading from paper or screen is ostensibly considered to have the same effect on model comprehension. However, the literature on text reading has indicated that the reading experiences can be very different which in turn effects various metrics related to reader performance. This paper reports on an experiment that was conducted to investigate the effect of reading software models on paper in comparison with reading them on a computer screen with respect to cognitive effectiveness. Cognitive effectiveness here refers to the ease by which a model reader can read a model. The experiment used a total of 74 software engineering students as subjects. The experiment results provide strong evidence that displaying diagrams on a screen allows subjects to read them quicker. There is also evidence that indicates that on screen viewing induces fewer reading errors.

Computer vision is one of the artificial intelligence’s most challenging fields, enabling computers to interpret, analyse and derive meaningful information from the visual world. There are various utilizations of computer vision algorithms, and most of them, from simpler to more complicated, have an object and shape recognition in common. Traditional pen and paper tests are designed in a pre-established format and consist of numerous basic shapes, which designate the important parts of the test itself. With that in mind, many computer vision applications regarding pen and paper tests arise as an opportunity. Massive courses and large schooling organizations mostly conduct their exams in paper format and assess them manually, which imposes a significant burden on the teaching staff. Any kind of automatization that will facilitate the grading process is highly desirable. Hence, an automated answer recognition system in assessment was developed to mitigate the problems above. The system uses images of scanned test pages obtained from the test scanning process and performs the necessary image manipulation steps to increase target recognition accuracy. Further, it manages to identify regions of interest containing multiple-choice questions and contours. Finally, the system verifies obtained results using the knowledge of the whereabouts of the test template regions of interest.

Paper folding-and-punching tests are used to measure spatial abilities in humans. This paper presents a qualitative model for paper folding (QPF) and a computer game (Paper Folding Game) developed to apply and show the reasoning capabilities of the QPF model. This interactive game presents paper-folding activities intended to help users train and understand how to fold a paper to get a specific shape. Then, it presents paper-folding-and-punching tests to the players. The Paper Folding Game can automatically generate paper-folding-and-punching questions with varying degrees of difficulty depending on the number of folds and holes made, thus producing additional levels for training. The reasoning mechanisms in the QPF model are used by the Paper Folding Game to infer the right answer to each paper-folding-and-punching question. This reasoning capability allows the game to provide feedback to the players when they are wrong and also to create other plausible answers automatically, so that random question-answers are shown to the players in the master-mode. The Paper Folding Game has been implemented using Unity engine and it is available to download from GooglePlay and AppleStore for everyone to train their spatial reasoning skills.

In the present analysis, a new experimental pilot plant system for exploring resin-impregnated paper (RIP) bushing technology was conducted. Experimental and numerical studies were carried out on the resin infusion and impregnation processes in the paper condenser core of a RIP bushing. An innovative approach for the molding process (named molding method B) of a commercial RIP bushing was implemented. For this method, the homogeneity of the paper winding process was controlled precisely. The filling process was conducted by gravity due to the difference of heights between two vacuumed chambers and from bottom to top in the mold. The flow front position and infusion time were measured experimentally and used to obtain the axial permeability of the paper condenser core analytically and numerically. The results indicate that the molding methods have a significant effect on the RIP bushing quality, homogeneous filling, and impregnating process time. Also, it was found that homogeneity of the paper winding process and, consequently, uniform axial velocity of resin flow in the radial direction is the most effective factor to eject the air. Finally, it was recognized that the determination of axial permeability in the case of transient flow is novel in comparison with conventional procedures such as Darcy relation of steady flows. By decreasing the paper thickness from 0.3 to 0.2 mm, the permeability decreased from 8.84 × 10−10 to 4.52 × 10−10 m2. The microstructure of the core illustrates that the axial permeability of the crepe paper condenser core is considerably affected by the variation of the paper thickness.

Directed evolution has become an important method to unleash the latent potential of enzymes to make them uniquely suited for human purposes. However, the need for a large reagent volume and sophisticated instrumentation hampers its broad implementation. In an attempt to address this problem, here we report a paper-based high-throughput screening approach that should find broad application in generating desired enzymes. As an example case, the dehalogenation reaction of the halohydrin dehalogenase was adopted for assay development. In addition to visual detection, quantitative measurements were performed by measuring the color intensity of an image that was photographed by a smartphone and processed using ImageJ free software. The proposed method was first validated using a gold standard method and then applied to mutagenesis library screening with reduced consumption of reagents (i.e., ≤ 10 μl per assay) and a shorter assay time. We identified two active mutants (P135A and G137A) with improved activities toward four tested substrates. The assay not only consumes less reagents but also eliminates the need for expensive instrumentation. The proposed method demonstrates the potential of paper-based whole-cell screening coupled with digital image colorimetry as a promising approach for the discovery of industrially important enzymes.Key Points• A frugal method was developed for directed enzyme evolution.• Mutagenesis libraries were successfully screened on a paper platform.• Smartphone imaging was efficiently used to measure enzyme activities.

In this paper, we compared the author’s perception of a manuscript’s quality with the manuscript’s actual impact. In addition, we analyzed the uncertainty of the author’s perception of the manuscript’s quality. From there,we defined ‘partition’ as the author’s ability to perceive the actual quality. We did this by launching a website for the use of the scientific community. This webpage provided a tool to help improve an investigator’s skill in understanding and recognizing the quality of a manuscript so as to help researchers improve and maximize their works’ potential impact. We carried out the experiment with 106 experienced users who tested our webpage. We found that the Abstract, the Title, and the Keywords were enough to perform a substantially decent evaluation of a manuscript. Performance/security trade-off is widely noticed in CFI research, however, we observe that not every CFI scheme is subject to the trade-off. Motivated by the key observation, we ask three questions: ➊ does trade-off really exist in different CFI schemes? ➋ if trade-off do exist, how do previous works comply with it? ➌ how can it inspire future research? Although the three questions probably cannot be directly answered, they are inspiring. We find that a deeper understanding of the nature of the trade-off will help answer the three questions. Accordingly, we proposed theGPTconjecture to pinpoint the trade-off in designing CFI schemes, which says that at most two out of three properties (fine granularity, acceptable performance, and preventive protection) could be achieved.

The color gamut of imaging media is significant for the reproduction of color images because its magnitude directly affects the degree to which colors change during the printing process. Over the last few years, digital impression technology has started to play a substantial role in the printing industry due to the quest for short runs and variable information printing. The color gamut of electrophotographic digital printing depends on various parameters including the printer and toner, but especially the properties (whiteness, roughness, and gloss) of the paper, which influence the final printed color gamut and replication quality. Artificial intelligence approaches are applied herein for the first time to choose and predict the performance of a paper with appropriate properties to achieve the maximum color gamut. A genetic algorithm-based computer code is developed to optimize the architecture of an artificial neural network, thereby yielding an accurate model to predict the color gamut achievable in electrophotographic color printing. The gamut volume was generated using an Eye-One spectrophotometer, ProfileMaker, and ColorThink software. The properties of 11 dissimilar types of paper were assessed by atomic force microscopy, spectrophotometer, and goniophotometer. The results indicate that the reproducibility depended considerably on the features of the paper. Although high whiteness and gloss increased the color gamut volume, and high roughness decreased the reproducibility of the printing machine, the artificial intelligence approach provided the opportunity to achieve a high gamut volume with low gloss and high roughness.

Headline generation is a challenging subtask of abstractive text summarization, which its output should be a summary, shorter than one sentence. It would be precious to develop a dataset for the evaluation of abstractive summarization methods on this task in the Persian language. There are several datasets for headline generation in Persian, most of which are not large enough to be used by more sophisticated methods of text summarization, such as deep learning models. Moreover, all of these datasets are focused on daily news and there is no dataset for summarizing scientific Persian papers. In this article, we present “ElmNet,” a headline generation dataset of about 400,000 abstract/headline pairs of scientific papers, gathered from six major publishers for scientific articles in Persian. We, moreover, evaluate the performance of the most important deep learning-based headline generation methods, on the proposed dataset. The results prove the comparability of the performance of the state-of-the-art methods on this task, to their results on the existing English datasets.

The contact angle (CA) of a water droplet on the polished aluminum surfaces is usually between 60° and 90°. This paper discusses a tuned bulk micro-manufacturing approach for transforming the surface topology of aluminum simultaneously at the micro- and nano-length scales, thereby significantly influencing its wetting characteristics. The approach is cheap, easy to implement, and scalable. The treated aluminum surfaces appeared like roughly polished surfaces at the macroscale and were found to be robust and non-toxic. They exhibited a paper towel effect by showing extreme surface wettability (CA of zero) to many industrial liquids, i.e., wetting on these surfaces is only a function of the surface roughness but not the fluid type. This extreme wetting ability to multiple liquids (or ultra-omniphilicity) was generated by sequentially creating a sub-surface micro- and nano-cavity architecture with nano-cavities within the embryos of micro-cavities interconnected by a network of micro-grooves.

Proportional–Integral–Derivative controller technique continues to provide the easiest and effective solutions to most of the industrial applications in recent years. However PID controller is poorly tuned in practice compared to most other tuning methods and is complicated with poor performance. This research presents a multi objective optimization approach involving Genetic Algorithm, Evolutionary Programming, Particle Swarm Optimization and Bacterial foraging optimization. The proposed multi objective optimization algorithm is used to tune the PID controller parameters and their performances have been compared with the conventional methodologies like Ziegler Nichols method. The results proved that the use of multi objective optimization approach based controller tuning improves the performance of process in terms of time domain specifications and performance index, set point tracking and regulatory changes and also provides stability. This paper describes the various multi objective optimization algorithms and its implementation to tune the PID Controller used in paper machine DCS as real time processing of a Pulp and paper industry processes.

Purpose: Some universal accessibility practitioners have voiced that they experience a mismatch in the research focus and the need for knowledge within specialized problem domains. This study thus set out to identify the balance of research into the main areas of accessibility, the impact of this research, and how the research profile varies over time and across geographical regions. Method: All UAIS papers indexed in Scopus were analysed using bibliometric methods. The WCAG taxonomy of accessibility was used for the analysis, namely perceivable, operable, and understandable. Results: The results confirm the expectation that research into visual impairment has received more attention than papers addressing operable and understandable. Although papers focussing on understandable made up the smallest group, papers in this group attracted more citations. Funded research attracted fewer citations than research without funding. The breakdown of research efforts appears consistent over time and across different geographical regions. Researchers in Europe and North America have been active throughout the last two decades, while Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Middle East became active in during the last five years. There is also seemingly a growing trend of out-of-scope papers. Conclusions: Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed to the UAIS editorial board.

We present a mixed reality-based assistive system for shading paper sketches. Given a paper sketch made by an artist, our interface helps inexperienced users to shade it appropriately. Initially, using a simple Delaunay-triangulation based inflation algorithm, an approximate depth map is computed. The system then highlights areas (to assist shading) based on a rendering of the 2.5-dimensional inflated model of the input contour. With the help of a mixed reality system, we project the highlighted areas back to aid users. The hints given by the system are used for shading and are smudged appropriately to apply an artistic shading to the sketch. The user is given flexibility at various levels to simulate conditions such as height and light position. Experiments show that the proposed system aids novice users in creating sketches with impressive shading.

Cognitive deficits are a core feature of mental and behavioral disorders, leading to poor treatment adherence and functionality. Virtual reality (VR) methodologies are promising solutions for cognitive interventions in psychiatry once they provide greater ecological validity. This study assessed and compared two content-equivalent cognitive training (CT) interventions, delivered in desktop VR (Reh@City v2.0) and paper-and-pencil (Task Generator (TG)) formats, in patients with mental and behavioral disorders. 30 patients were randomly assigned to the Reh@City v2.0 group and the TG group. Both groups of patients underwent a time-matched 24-sessions intervention. Neuropsychological assessments were performed at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up. A within-groups analysis revealed significant improvements in visual memory and depressive symptomatology after the Reh@City intervention. The TG group improved in processing speed, verbal memory, and quality of life (social relationships and environmental domains). Between groups, Reh@City led to a greater reduction in depressive symptomatology, whereas the TG group showed higher improvements in social relationships aspects of quality of life. At follow-up, previous gains were maintained and new improvements found in the Reh@City (global cognitive function, language, visuospatial and executive functions) and the TG groups (attention). The Reh@City significantly reduced depressive symptomatology, and the TG led to greater improvements in processing speed, abstraction, and social relationships domain of quality of life at follow-up. Both interventions were associated with important cognitive, emotional, and quality of life benefits, which were maintained after two months. Reh@City and TG should be considered as complementary CT methods for patients with mental and behavioral disorders. Cystinuria, is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder involving increasingly high levels of poorly soluble cysteine in urine leading to formation of stones. Developing a facile, low-cost, point-of-care and selective sensor for diagnosis of cysteine is imperative. Accordingly, for the detection of cysteine, the present study demonstrates an inexpensive colorimetric, paper-based vertical flow plasmonic micro-well device with a two-minute turn-around time. The method encompasses the use of microbially-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) that change from light brown / yellow to dark brown upon binding with Sulphur present in cysteine. This technique allows for visual detection up to 1 × 10−5 mM cysteine and can be easily offered as a rapid diagnostic test even at setups with minimal resources.

Simple, low-cost and portable microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) for determination of creatinine in urine samples were developed. The methodology was based on Jaffé reaction between the creatinine and picric acid in alkaline conditions, generating a colorimetric creatinine-alkaline picrate complex. The product exhibits an orange color that is clearly visible on the μPADs. The color intensity of the complex, which is indicative of the concentration of creatinine, is then quantitatively determined using ImageJ software. Various experimental parameters were optimized to achieve the best performance of the μPADs. Under the optimum conditions, a wide linear range was obtained in the range of 0.2 - 1 mM with a limit of detection and limit of quantitation of 0.08 and 0.26 mM, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method was in good agreement with the standard Jaffé method. Finally, the developed devices were successfully applied for the determination of creatinine in urine samples.

Since English is probably the most popular second language, helping students learn English through technology is a critical issue in non-English-speaking countries. With the growth of digital pen technologies, developing an interactive learning environment that combines printed textbooks and a digital pen to support English-language classroom learning has become feasible. This work presents an attention-based diagnosing and review mechanism (ADRM) based on brainwave detection to help learners identify the passages with low attention level in a lesson as review targets in order to perform efficiently and accurately review processes while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support in autonomous learning environments. Based on the true experimental design, this work aims to confirm whether the ADRM improves the review performance and sustained attention of learners while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support. The research participants were a total of 108 students at an industrial vocational high school in Taipei City, Taiwan. All research participants were male and aged from 17 to 18 years. The experimental group used the ADRM while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support, whereas the control group used the autonomous review while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support. Experimental results reveal that the review performance of the experimental group was significantly better than that of the control group, proving that the ADRM improved review performance. The results also show that the field-dependent learners in the experimental group exhibited a great improvement in review performance in comparison with the field-independent learners. Additionally, the low-ability learners in the experimental group exhibited better review performance compared to those in the control group. Furthermore, learners with high attention level in the experimental group have exhibited better review performance and sustained attention than the learners in the control group. This work confirms that developing an ADRM based on brainwave detection to assist learners’ review processes is practicable. However, the usability and acceptability of using ADRM instead of human autonomous review should be further considered in the information society.

Augmented reality technology is attracting increased attention, given the popularity of the smartphone. The utilisation of the smartphone with AR technology is also enabling mobile augmented reality (MAR) to become accessible. Stereoscopic vision offers users the benefit of depth perception, which can help improve user memory. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect on knowledge retention using MAR with stereoscopic vision. An experiment to compare a stereoscopic-based MAR application and a paper-based manual was designed to test the participants’ knowledge retention on a product part and disassembly process. The developed MAR adopted a smartphone and headset case to provide a stereoscopic view to the user. The experiment consisted of both pre-test and post-test phases where the pre-test phase examined the participant’s knowledge about the product, and the post-test phase focused on how much information the participants could recall. The post-test phase was conducted after 48 h following the pre-test phase since long-term memory required several hours in which to stabilise. The results showed that the MAR group had an advantage over the paper-based manual group for both information retentions having a mean score of 8.89 from the MAR group, compared with 6.33 for the paper-based manual group. Moreover, the MAR group was observed to have fewer errors in the post-test with a mean score of 0.53, whereas the paper-based achieved a score of 2.2. This result indicated that the MAR group and the paper-based manual group had equivalent performance in the completion time without the assistance tool. In addition, MAR had a better mean score for the subjective feedback (usefulness = 4.47, ease of use 4.18 and satisfaction = 4.07).

In this paper, we propose a novel paper currency defect detection algorithm using quaternion uniform strength. We first build paper currency image preprocessing integration framework which includes intensity balancing, paper currency location, and geometric correction. We then propose a global–local paper currency image registration algorithm by moving key areas within certain range which can eliminate the false difference effectively. Finally, the quaternion uniform strength is calculated by using quaternion convolution edge detector. The defect degree of paper currency is determined by using the quaternion uniform color difference. The proposed algorithm is tested using different datasets from five countries: CNY, USD, EUR, VND, and RUB. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm yields better results than the existing state-of-the-art paper currency defect detection techniques. The demo of the proposed paper currency defect detection algorithm will be publicly available.

We introduce a comprehensive benchmark for local features and robust estimation algorithms, focusing on the downstream task -- the accuracy of the reconstructed camera pose -- as our primary metric. Our pipeline's modular structure allows easy integration, configuration, and combination of different methods and heuristics. This is demonstrated by embedding dozens of popular algorithms and evaluating them, from seminal works to the cutting edge of machine learning research. We show that with proper settings, classical solutions may still outperform the perceived state of the art. Besides establishing the actual state of the art, the conducted experiments reveal unexpected properties of Structure from Motion (SfM) pipelines that can help improve their performance, for both algorithmic and learned methods. Physical paper, in its various forms (e.g. books, leaflets, catalogues), is extensively used in everyday activities, despite any advancements in digital technology and ICT. Inspired by the popularity of this medium, several research efforts have envisioned and pursued a new era of interactive paper, however several challenges still remain to be addressed. On the other hand, recent advancements towards Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and Smart environments, bear the promise of seamless integration of the physical and digital worlds in an intuitive and user-friendly manner. This paper presents InPrinted, a systematic and generic framework supporting physical paper augmentation and user interaction in Ambient intelligence environments. InPrinted enables natural multimodal user interaction with any kind of printed matter in smart environments, providing context aware and anticipation mechanisms, as well as tools and interaction techniques that support the development of applications incorporating printed matter augmentation. InPrinted has been put to practice in the development of various systems, including the Interactive Maps system, facilitating interaction with printed maps as well as their augmentation with digital information. The results of an in-situ observation experiment of the Interactive Maps system are reported, highlighting that interacting with augmented paper is quite easy and natural, while the overall User Experience is positive.

In this paper, we aim to implement augmented reality (AR) on distant text documents or books. For this purpose, we propose a new paper-based AR system that can detect text documents in real scenes, markerize and identify them, estimate their relative 3D poses to the camera, and augment them with virtual contents. Unlike the previous paper-based AR systems (applicable to only close documents), the proposed system not only requires no detection of words or characters, but allows partial occlusions like the previous systems. In our experiments, the proposed system worked at 24 fps and could consistently achieve high identification rates for both occluded and unoccluded pages.

Millions of new research papers are published each year, making it extremely difficult for researchers to find out what they really want. Existing paper recommendation algorithms cannot effectively address the recommendation of newly published papers due to lack of historical information(e.g., citation information; view log), the so-called cold start problem. Furthermore, in most of these studies, papers are considered in homogeneous or bipartite networks. However, in a real bibliographic network, there are multiple types of objects (e.g., researchers, papers, venues, topics) and multiple types of links among these objects. In this paper, we study the problem of new paper recommendation in the heterogeneous bibliographic network, and a new method called HIPRec, i.e., meta-graph based recommendation model, is proposed to solve this problem. First, the top-K most interesting meta-paths are selected based on the training data. Secondly, a greedy method is proposed to select the most significant meta-graphs generated by merging the meta-paths, which can describe more sophisticated semantics between researchers and papers than simple meta-paths. In the meantime, meta-path and meta-graph based topological features are systematically extracted from the network. Lastly, a supervised model is used to learn the best weights associated with different topological features in deciding the researcher-new paper recommendations. We present experiments on a real bibliographic network, the DBLP network, which show the effectiveness of our approach compared to state-of-the-art new paper recommendation methods.

Over the past few years, ANTS has been a premier forum onnetworking and telecommunication related topics in India. It is the only conference in India financially sponsored by IEEE Communications Society. A key feature of the IEEE ANTS is that it is aimed at promoting intense dialogue between academia and industry to bridge the gap between academic research, industry initiatives, and governmental policies. Besides the technical paper and poster presentations, this is fostered through panel discussions, keynotes, invited talks, and industry exhibits. IEEE ANTS 2014 was a four day event organized by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), New Delhi, India. IEEEANTS2014was co-sponsored byC-DOT, Tata Consultancy Services, Infinera, Cisco, IP Junction, and Avaya. We received 135 long paper submissions and 17 short paper submissions from over 15 countries. Each paper was reviewed by at least 2 (and often 3 or 4 or even 5) members of the technical program committee, and we accepted 42 long papers and 6 short papers for oral presentation. Free-falling paper shapes exhibit rich, complex and varied behaviours that are extremely challenging to model analytically. Physical experimentation aids in system understanding, but is time-consuming, sensitive to initial conditions and reliant on subjective visual behavioural classification. In this study, robotics, computer vision and machine learning are used to autonomously fabricate, drop, analyse and classify the behaviours of hundreds of shapes. The system is validated by reproducing results for falling discs, which exhibit four falling styles: tumbling, chaotic, steady and periodic. A previously determined mapping from a non-dimensional parameter space to behaviour groups is shown to be consistent with these new experiments for tumbling and chaotic behaviours. However, steady or periodic behaviours are observed in previously unseen areas of the parameter space. More complex hexagon, square and cross shapes are investigated, showing that the non-dimensional parameter space generalizes to these shapes. The system highlights the potential of robotics for the investigation of complex physical systems, of which falling paper is one example, and provides a template for future investigation of such systems. The dynamics of paper shapes in free fall are still not fully understood, despite being discussed for more than 150 years. Collecting large amounts of data has the potential to give us new insights and a robotics system could generate and analyse data in large quantities.

Scientific retrieval systems need to be given domain search terms for searching publications, however, as natural language, search terms provided by users are often fuzzy and limited and some relevant terms are always overlooked in searching. Meanwhile, users always desire to be given domain related keywords to enlighten themselves what other terms can be used for their searching. This paper presents a concepts recommendation model in scientific paper retrieval, in which concepts are extracted from keyword in scientific papers, and some data mining algorithms are used to calculate the similarity between search terms and concepts and do recommendation for users. This model is simple and can be used with small dataset, in which all training data used is from meta data of papers that is easy to acquired. Experimental result hold good precision, which shows that this research not only simplifies searching step and improves the searching quality for users, but also lays the foundation for semantic search.

In this work is presented and described an optical system specifically designed and implemented to be applied for the study of the ink---paper interaction at the paper surface, considering the two main directions of the paper sheet (machine and cross directions). This work is particularly concerned with the system description, complete characterization, test, and its usage under real conditions. Concerning the system characterization, the main parameters were addressed and set having in mind its optimization. Relatively to the test of the system, several measurements using specific object samples with known dimensions were carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the obtained results. In terms of its usage under real conditions, an experiment was carried out using a commercial ink and common copy paper to dynamically collect data of its interaction. The collected data, after processing, enabled the determination of the main results of the analyzed ink---paper interaction, which allowed to reach the following conclusions; (1) the implemented system offers two different analysis approaches (qualitative and quantitative), both showing to be in agreement; and (2) the system also shows to be important to identify variations of the ink---paper interaction, manifested in the machine and cross directions of the paper.

This Special Issue presents extended versions of the best papers presented at the International Conference on Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA) which is the flagship Australian Conference on computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and related areas. DICTA was established in 1991 as the premier conference of the Australian Pattern Recognition Society (APRS). However, DICTA accepts submissions from researchers all over the world and attracts a significant number of international delegates each year. DICTA is technically cosponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Australian Pattern Recognition Society (APRS). DICTA 2019 was held in Perth, Western Australia, from 2 to 4 December 2019. All papers accepted and presented at DICTA 2019 are included in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Each paper submitted to DICTA 2019 was reviewed by three experts in a double-blind review process. Based on comments from the three reviewers and assessments of the Program Chairs of the conference as well as the Guest Editors, authors of 17 papers were invited to submit extended versions of their work to this Special Issue of Neural Computing and Applications (NCAA). Each submitted paper went through a peer review process again, and 10 papers were finally accepted for publication in NCAA.

As mobile devices, such as e-book readers and tablet computers, have emerged as alternatives to traditional printed media, they are also being increasingly employed as survey administration equipment. However, the question arises as to whether mobile devices are actually more effective than paper for survey administration. To address this question, the current study conducted a between-subjects experiment (N = 60) in which participants were asked to complete a survey questionnaire either on paper or an iPad. The results showed that the mobile device-based survey was more effective than the paper-based survey in encouraging participants to disclose information. In addition, self-disclosure was found to mediate the effects of the survey medium type on perceived security of information, usefulness of the medium, and intention to use the medium in the future.
