The improvement of the incorporated nanoparticle content in nanocomposite coatings is a key factor in composite electrodeposition. This paper describes a modified sediment co-deposition (SCD) technique which has been developed to produce Ni–CeO2 nanocomposite coatings, with the aim of enhancing the embedded CeO2 nanoparticle content. The maximum content of CeO2 particles in the nanocomposite coatings created using this modified SCD technique is 7·09 wt-%, which is the highest reported. A maximum microhardness of 630 HV is obtained, which is significantly greater than that observed in nanocomposite coatings fabricated using the conventional electrodeposition technique. As the wear resistance of the nanocomposite coatings increases with increasing incorporated CeO2 nanoparticle content, so this nanocomposite coating with an incorporated CeO2 nanoparticle content of 7·09 wt-% exhibits maximum wear resistance.

This paper presents a new transistor self-oscillating inverter suitable for high efficiency switch mode power supplies, which can operate directly from high voltages and is free from output transformer saturation problems due to transistor characteristic mismatch. It uses a half-bridge power circuit, consisting of two transistors in one limb and two capacitors in the other. Amongst several advantages of this configuration, the switching transistors need to withstand a minimum voltage equal to the dc supply only and not higher as in conventional circuits, while using only two transistors.

The aim of this paper is to present the category of golf in a new Historical Thesaurus of Scots (HTS). A new project to create a Pilot Historical Thesaurus of Scots (PHiTS) was based at the University of Glasgow. The Historical Thesaurus of Scots is a new resource of Scots containing vocabulary from the twelfth century to the present day, which is organised according to the relationship of synonymy and by semantic category. The thesaurus is based on the semantic information found in an existing digital resource, the Dictionary of the Scots Language, and is entirely digital. The HTS is modelled on the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (HTOED), the first historical thesaurus for any language, which was compiled at the University of Glasgow and published in 2009. Ports worldwide seek for more efficient and sustainable operations, relying on critical and valuable assets as their cranes. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies enable a better understanding of critical assets’ behaviour and lifecycle based on data, and development of asset management decision support tools. The Asset Health Index (AHI) is an asset condition score, designed to characterise the state of complex assets. This paper describes the process of developing a data-driven AHI. IoT sensors and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) in real operation time, together with information systems, and other more traditional sources of data are some of the data sources for the AHI. The index captures and quantifies dimensions affecting the asset lifecycle, allowing the comparison of the condition of assets and prioritise maintenance investments. Morpho-phonological patterns and semantic density influence the processing of spoken complex words and contribute to the dissociation between regularly and irregularly inflected forms. However, it is unclear whether all listeners rely on morpho-phonological and semantic cues to the same degree. The present paper examines whether a listener’s cognitive profile, indicated by processing efficiency, affects the processing strategy employed when listening to morphologically complex words. Two auditory judgement experiments demonstrate that slower responders rely more strongly on semantic processing than faster responders, but all listeners show morpho-phonological effects regardless of processing speed and form effects. This demonstrates that morpho-phonological processing is automatic for all listeners, but processing efficiency determines whether additional semantic cues are engaged. The results highlight the importance of integrating cognitive variability into current models of complex word processing.

This paper examines new forms of study-abroad expertise on social media and their role in mediating Indian student mobility to Germany. Firstly, it explores how mutual-support Facebook and WhatsApp groups – used by prospective international students in India to support each other through the process of applying to German universities – have contributed to the emergence of new forms of education consultancy, offered by Indian students or graduates of German universities, whom I call ‘Student Guides’. In addition, it shows how some Indians studying in Germany have started ‘Study in Germany’ YouTube channels, aimed at aspirant student migrants, and have become important ‘study-abroad influencers’. The paper analyses how these new forms of study-abroad expertise offer prospective international students social and cultural capital important for successful student migration, apart from shaping their imaginative geographies of Germany, and embedding them in cultures of mobility. Furthermore, the paper highlights how these new forms of study-abroad expertise intersect with, and critique, a more ‘traditional’ study-abroad expert: the professional education consultant. The paper draws on a digital ethnography of ‘Study in Germany’ Facebook and WhatsApp groups and YouTube channels, as well as interviews with the YouTubers, Student Guides, and Indian students in Germany.

The boundary feedback control problem of a Timoshenko beam with an end mass is studied in this paper. First, under some nonlinear boundary feedback controls, the asymptotic stability for the corresponding closed-loop system is shown. Then, with the energy-perturbed approach, it is proved, under some specific linear feedback controls applied to the tip, that the vibration of the beam decays uniformly; finally, in the case when feedback controls are applied to both the beam ends, the uniform decay is also established.

This paper will show how turbulence plays a leading role in the design of space launching systems. It presents several areas for which turbulent flows represent critical issues either for the reliability of the systems or for their operational performance. Turbulence is a leading physical phenomenon involved in both the external aerodynamics of space vehicles as well as in the operation of their propulsive systems. Physical issues concern, for instance, unsteady low-velocity and large-scale atmospheric aerodynamics, subsonic, trans-sonic and supersonic vehicle aerodynamics, re-entry aerothermodynamics, single- and multiple-phase mixing and combustion, aerodynamics and hydraulics of turbomachinery. The mastering of these complex phenomena is a critical challenge for the space industry if it is to propose, in the future, reliable and high-performance systems with ambitious low-cost objectives. Over the last few years there has been a renewed interest in questions of citizenship and in particular its relation to young people. This has been allied to an educational discourse where the emphasis has been upon questions concerned with ‘outcome’ rather than with ‘process’– with the curriculum and methods of teaching rather than questions of understanding and learning. This paper seeks to describe and illuminate the linkages within and between these related discourses. It advocates an inclusive and relational view of citizenship-as-practice within a distinctive socio-economic and political, and cultural milieu. Drawing upon some empirical insights from our research we conclude that an appropriate educational programme would respect the claim to citizenship status of everyone in society, including children and young people. This paper explores the complex temporal dynamics of innovation through a longitudinal study encompassing the dramatic ‘failure’ of South Korea’s flagship WiBro (wireless broadband) technology and services to achieve widespread uptake, following their apparently ‘successful’ development and launch. WiBro emerged in Korea by enrolling diverse actors with diverging orientations around a compelling broad vision and expected national and international markets. Launched in 2006, with buoyant expectations, WiBro failed to establish critical mass in mainstream markets in the face of growing competition from rapidly evolving mobile telephone technologies. Though players committed to WiBro managed to establish some specific niche markets, the service was finally terminated in 2018. This eventual failure was rooted in a sequence of decisions as orientations shifted over the course of WiBro’s innovation. Generic and largely untested expectations were initially productive in enrolling a wide range of players in developing WiBro. However, tensions became acute as roll-out approached when the growing investments required to install a novel telecommunications infrastructure and launch WiBro services provoked more stringent assessment of specific options. As the stakes became higher, alignments shifted in a changing sociotechnical landscape; submerged differences in orientation resurfaced and commitments unravelled.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been widely used in various fields such as sensors. In this article, we designed six novel heterocyclic Ir(III) complexes: (CFM)2Ir(acac) (named 1 in this paper), (TTIQ)2Ir(acac) (named 2), (CFM)2Ir(tmd) (named 3), (TTIQ)2Ir(tmd) (named 4), (CFM)2Ir(pic) (named 5) and (TTIQ)2Ir(pic) (named 6). The six iridium (III) complexes were calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT). We studied the bands of the lowest-lying absorptions and lowest energy emissions of complexes 1–6. In addition, we also explored their spectral properties, frontier Molecular Orbital theory(FMO) and spin-orbital coupling value(SOC). Where acac is represented as pentane-2, 4-dione; tmd as 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione; pic as pyridine-2-carboxylate; TTIQ as 1-{thieno[3,2-b]thiophen-2-yl}isoquinoline; CFM as 2-(4-fluorobrobenyl)-4-methylpyridine. A series of heteroleptic cyclometalated Ir (III) complexes, which are used for OLED application, were investigated by DFT and TD-DFT method. The frontier molecular orbital character and charge transfer character shown that they have the advantages of low efficiency roll-off properties, which is a ‘stumbling block’ in the process of OLED solid-lighting’s development. Namely, means the materials will play an important role in the journey development of OLED.

Under the Forest Rights Act 2006, the government of India has recognised the Individual Forest Rights (IFR) of forest dwellers that formalise the de jure land tenure over forest land. This is expected to incentivise owners to invest and take better care of their forest land which, in turn, is assumed to improve households’ income and financial access and thereby reduce their food insecurity. Using the primary data collected from 300 IFR beneficiary households in Bankura district of the Indian state of West Bengal and the ordinal logistic regression model, this paper identifies and analyses the determinant factors influencing household food insecurity. Results show that larger IFR land size areas, higher education levels of the household head, and higher annual income are associated with a significant reduction in food insecurity. On the contrary, larger household sizes, higher dependency ratios, and the occurrence of crop damage are associated with a highly significant increase in food insecurity. Hence, it is suggested that in order to help reduce households’ food insecurity among forest dwellers in the state, the assignment of IFR land area of sufficient size to forest dwellers’ households may further be encouraged.

This paper proposes an interpretation methodology for the effect of transient process data on quality of injection molded parts. The transient process data measured in the actual processing space have been regarded as the most relevant information to manufacturing processes and product quality. However, its interpretation to pinpoint which feature in the data would affect part quality has traditionally relied on knowledge and understanding of the manufacturing process. The main objective of this method is to reduce the dependency of the transient process data analysis on process knowledge and understanding by using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). The contribution of the ‘section-wise' features in the transient process data to the quality prediction of machine learning (ML) models was investigated for the first time. The interpretation results of the effect of cavity pressure and mold surface temperature on four different quality factors represented reasonable explanations of the characteristics of the polymer materials, product geometry, and molding process. Due to the intermediate relationship of the transient process data with the user-specified process parameters and the resulting quality variables, the interpretation results can be further utilized to optimize the process and provide the optimal transient process data profile for best part quality.

In this paper, first we introduce the notion of an embedding tensor on a 3-Lie algebra, which naturally induces a 3-Leibniz algebra. Using the derived bracket, we construct a Lie 3-algebra, whose Maurer-Cartan elements are embedding tensors. Consequently, we obtain the $L_{\infty}$-algebra that governs deformations of embedding tensors. We define the cohomology theory for embedding tensors on 3-Lie algebras. As applications, we show that if two formal deformations of an embedding tensor on a 3-Lie algebra are equivalent, then their infinitesimals are in the same cohomology class in the second cohomology group. Moreover, an order n deformation of an embedding tensor is extendable if and only if the obstruction class, which is in the third cohomology group, is trivial.

While it is now widely acknowledged that child-rearing practices vary culturally, there has been little research or consideration on how cultural difference is experienced by Polish immigrant parents in Ireland. This paper reflects on how culture is experienced by migrant parents and shapes Polish migrant parenting in the Irish context. It draws on findings from a qualitative study which elicited Polish migrant parents¿ perspectives on the norms that shape parenting and their parental experiences, while residing in a culturally diverse neighbourhood in Ireland. Findings highlight that no single theoretical framework accurately captures Polish migrant parenting, which is a complex, multidimensional and dynamic phenomenon. Instead, insight is required into migration experiences, the influence of childhood, family relationships and obligations, as well as employment and parenting styles, all of which are underpinned by specific cultural norms and values, to better understand parental challenges in the adaptation to their post migration environment. Statistical analysis of multimodal imaging data is a challenging task, since the data involves high-dimensionality, strong spatial correlations and complex data structures. In this paper, we propose rigorous statistical testing procedures for making inferences on the complex dependence of multimodal imaging data. Motivated by the analysis of multi-task fMRI data in the Human Connectome Project (HCP) study, we particularly address three hypothesis testing problems: (a) testing independence among imaging modalities over brain regions, (b) testing independence between brain regions within imaging modalities, and (c) testing independence between brain regions across different modalities. Considering a general form for all the three tests, we develop a global testing procedure and a multiple testing procedure controlling the false discovery rate. We study theoretical properties of the proposed tests and develop a computationally efficient distributed algorithm. The proposed methods and theory are general and relevant for many statistical problems of testing independence structure among the components of high-dimensional random vectors with arbitrary dependence structures. We also illustrate our proposed methods via extensive simulations and analysis of five task fMRI contrast maps in the HCP study.

Organisations’ increasing adoption of lightweight automation, such as robotic process automation (RPA), raises concerns about the associated systems’ robustness and security, with data-security concerns becoming further accentuated when tools of this sort are deployed for handling of potentially sensitive data. However, literature on designing these tools in a manner mitigating risks related to organisational data security has remained scarce. This paper addresses this gap by presenting a study in which RPA was successfully designed for a process wherein the software robot handles sensitive personal data. Informed by work on the mindlessness of automation, sociotechnical envelopment, and security by design, this empirical study, employing action design research at Wärtsilä Corporation, pointed to three design principles, related to envelopment, access rights, and audit trails. By adhering to these, Wärtsilä created envelopes around the robot that afford the automation’s safe operation and processing of the sensitive data. This research advances the theory of sociotechnical envelopment’s design and deployment by introducing a novel approach in security by envelopment to elaborate on the security-oriented envelopment of mindless automation agents. The paper also discusses the practical utility of the artefact designed, in terms of both design and evaluation.

This paper describes the development of a package for the salvage and transport of dangerous goods within the radioactive materials classification LSA-II/SCO-II and the preparation of the safety submission such that the package is suitable for licensing as an Industrial Type (IP-2) Package. The package developed is a stainless steel 307 litre drum comprising upper and lower drum sections, clamped together using a two piece clamping band secured by four M12 socket head cap screws. Sealing of the drum is provided by an ‘O’ ring positioned between the two drum sections. The overall dimensions of the packaging are 1002 mm × 710 mm (diameter), its mass is 50 kg and it is tested for payloads of up to a maximum of 400 kg. Extensive testing was carried out on the package by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research on behalf of the manufacturer, and the package proved to be suitable for carrying a variety of payloads. In this paper, the kinetic study of the reaction between substituted 1,4-benzoquinones (RBQs) and Na2SO3 (S(IV)) is presented in aqueous solutions at different pH values and reagent concentrations. The stoichiometry of the reaction is 1:2 RBQs:S(IV) and one equivalent of chloride ion was also detected as a product when using mono- (2-CBQ) or dichloro-benzoquinones (2,5-DCBQ; 2,6-DCBQ) as reactants. This shows that reductive dehalogenation occurs instead of simple reduction to the corresponding substituted 1,4-hydroquinones (RBQHs) and quinone bisulfites are formed, analogously to the addition of bisulfite ion to carbonyl compounds. Various sulfonated quinones have been identified as products by electrospray mass spectrometry. Kinetic traces at different wavelengths were obtained by the stopped-flow technique with spectrophotometric detection, a kinetic fitting program (ZiTa) was used to fit a multi-step model to the data. A detailed mathematical evaluation of the reaction scheme was carried out under non-pseudo-first order conditions showing that our model can be fitted with a double exponential function even when none of the reagents are in large excess.

The design and safety assessment of nuclear reactors rely on a combination of calculations performed by several simulation packages, each dedicated to modeling a specific ensemble of phenomena. To treat the complexity of the physical problem, appropriate software architectures and methodologies to trace and implement user needs are of paramount importance to fulfill the needs of all the possible stakeholders. This work proposes a systematic approach to break the complexity of constructing a lattice neutronics platform that is one of the simulation packages needed in nuclear reactor analysis. After reviewing the state of the art of current methods applied in reactor physics engineering, the work concentrates on identifying the applicable software architecture strategies and on discussing advantages and drawbacks. While the specific target is the neutronics code APOLLO3®, the subsequent categorization and analysis of user needs written in the form of formal requirements allow for defining a unified approach to design an effective, industrial-grade, and future-proof calculation platform. Subsequent presentation of typical use cases involved in developing deterministic lattice calculation schemes allows linking the formal definition of use cases and software architecture with the actual application to a specific calculation setting. This work aims, therefore, at proposing an innovative viewpoint to tackle large software developments applicable in the nuclear industry. The research presented in this paper has been developed at Framatome in the context of the lattice neutronics work package of the H2020 CAMIVVER project.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are important regulators of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and are involved in many stages of cellular growth and development. An imbalance of MMP expression is also the basis of many diseases, including eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, dry eye, corneal ulcer, keratoconus. This paper describes the role of MMPs in the glaucoma and their role in the glaucomatous trabecular meshwork (TM), aqueous outflow channel, retina, and optic nerve (ON). This review also summarizes several treatments for glaucoma that target MMPs imbalance and suggests that MMPs may represent a viable therapeutic target for glaucoma.

Water loss due to persistent leakages in water distribution networks remains a substantive problem around the world, all the more so given noticeable trends of increasing global water scarcities. In this paper, we present a data-driven leak localization approach leveraging a connected Geographical Information System together with an autoencoder to perform anomaly detection on time-variable sensor data. Data-driven approaches are able to circumvent many of the uncertainty issues associated with model-based approaches, but they usually require significant amounts of high-quality data, reflecting many different leak scenarios, to perform well. Our approach obviates this requirement by relying only on leakless data during model training. We examine the efficacy of this approach on 19 realistic leak experiments conducted in the field. Based on these evaluations, we were able to achieve average search costs as low as 2.2 kilometers, for a total network length of 215 kilometers.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have ample space for composition design, so finding an ideal hydrogen storage material is a great challenge. This work used the atomic radius difference, valence electron concentration, entropy, enthalpy, and new design parameters to develop a new-type alloy with a BCC structure. The V35Ti25Cr20Fe10Mn10 alloy was selected by semi-empirical formula calculation, subsequently, the alloy was successfully synthesized by mechanical alloying, and hydrogen storage properties were evaluated. The activated sample shows an excellent kinetic performance of hydrogen absorption, but its maximum hydrogen storage capacity is only about 0.34 wt.%. The results of the PCI test show that the hydrogen absorption way may be composed of the H-solid solution in the alloy and the formation of a few hydrides, which determines the hydrogen storage capacity. Significantly, the design method reported in this paper can meet the composition design of most HEAs, which has a broad application prospect.

This paper presents a learning- and scenario-based model predictive control (MPC) design approach for systems modeled in linear parameter-varying (LPV) framework. Using input-output data collected from the system, a state-space LPV model with uncertainty quantification is first learned through the variational Bayesian inference Neural Network (BNN) approach. The learned probabilistic model is assumed to contain the true dynamics of the system with a high probability and used to generate scenarios which ensure safety for a scenario-based MPC. Moreover, to guarantee stability and enhance performance of the closed-loop system, a parameter-dependent terminal cost and controller, as well as a terminal robust positive invariant set are designed. This paper presents interval estimation for the population mean and coefficient of variation in a two-parameter exponential distribution. The new generalized pivot, profile likelihood function and likelihood ratio statistic are derived and used to construct the confidence intervals. A highlight of this paper is that the generalized and likelihood ratio confidence intervals for the mean and coefficient of variation perform well in terms of coverage probability in many cases. Finally, two real-data applications on the air pollution of particulate matter (PM2.5) and the renewable energy through wind power of Thailand are used for illustration purposes.

After the discovery of aerial embryonic incubation in mudskippers, it was found that the male induces larval hatching by removing the air from the egg-chamber so that the eggs immerse in water. Do the adults provide additional support to the newly hatched larvae to help them leave the life-endangering hypoxic water inside the burrow? This paper compares 18 hatching events of 3 species: dusky gilled mudskipper, Pearse´s mudskipper and slender mudskipper. After air removal 3 different burrow-shape dependent strategies of paternal help for larval burrow leaving were observed: (1) very frequent diving toward the burrow shaft or into the egg-chamber to generate turbulences that can help to propel the larvae toward the water surface; (2) tail-undulation to create a water current out of the burrow that would take along the hatched larvae; and (3) intake of larvae into the paternal mouth, subsequently spitting them out to expel them from the burrow.

This paper examines how students’ employability develops during undergraduate studies at a Dutch liberal arts college compared to a conventional bachelor’s programme in law at the same university. Drawing on the graduate capital model, the study focuses on six skills that enhance employability: creativity, lifelong learning, career decidedness, self-efficacy, resilience, and personal initiative. To measure employability growth, a cross-sectional pseudo-cohort research design is adopted, comparing first-, second-, and third-year student cohorts. The results show that liberal arts students make significant progress in five out of the six examined employability-related skills. Compared to the conventional programme, the gains in creativity and personal initiative particularly stand out, reflecting the differences between interdisciplinary and monodisciplinary learning, and self-tailored and fixed curriculum structures. This refutes the stereotype that a liberal arts degree does not prepare students for the labour market and points to the relevance of programme-specific features for employability development in higher education.

Dominant risk factors are to do with relationships, work load, the university environment and approaches to learning and teaching. Over recent decades higher education has been increasingly influenced by rules of commodification, however less commercially driven foci relating to wellbeing and mental health are increasingly being prioritised in higher education. This paper describes the development of a multifaceted logic model that can be adapted to university contexts to support wellbeing and creative approaches to learning. A socioecological approach refers to considering the group as a microsystem representative of larger systems and integrating emotionally focused and creative learning experiences that enhance subject relevant content. We implemented and evaluated a series of workshops to improve psychological safety and learning experience. We used a logic model design as an evaluation framework to map the inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. The pre and post outcome measure of psychological safety demonstrated significant change, where students could be more open and explorative in their learning experience. We also used a survey evaluation that demonstrated students found the project acceptable, delivered to a high standard, and that the content was relevant to their subject area. Given that the changing culture and ethos of a University can have a major influence on the wellbeing of the students, a flexible programme design as mapped through a logic model, provided us with a framework for introducing and evaluating a complex model for improving learning and wellbeing

Systems designed with persuasive software features can influence users to adopt attitudes and/or behaviours that contribute to better health outcomes. Studies on Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) interventions have shown how they can be used to support lifestyle changes. Meta-analytic reviews of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to appraise, summarise, and show their effects on health. To this end, we investigated the effectiveness of digital health interventions (DHI) designed for CHD and examined the impact of persuasive features in the DHIs. We performed a systematic search using three academic databases for scientific papers on CHD and digital interventions from 2010 to 2020, yielding 1556 papers. The systematic review and meta-analysis included 12 RCTs after screening. Our findings show that digital health interventions had an impact on diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, glycated haemoglobin, glucose, triglyceride, heart rate, and depression but not body mass index. We present effective interventions and insights into persuasive software features that were associated with effective DHIs. More research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of persuasive features in other contexts and other factors that can impact the effectiveness of DHIs.

Considering growing participatory turns in regulatory scientific risk analysis, this paper compares how social scientists use participatory and analytical methods to understand risk perceptions and meet competing demands for representativeness and inclusiveness. Drawing on case studies of how three European risk agencies use participatory and analytic methods in the context of biotechnology, it confirms difficulties of analytic methods to shed light on perceptions when applied to unfamiliar topics. It also shows the potential of participatory in particular deliberative formats to engage affected populations in the risk analysis process, despite challenges in promoting inclusiveness. The cases call for the integration of methods, while remaining aware of the need to understand the mutual interplay in the constructions of risks and structural inequalities.

This paper responds to the tendency of past scholarship to reduce European Union (EU) attitudes of regionalist parties to one general position. It undertakes a comprehensive analysis of regionalist parties’ EU attitudes from sub-state parliamentary debates. Drawing on three different cases from three territorial contexts – Plaid Cymru, Femu a Corsica and Süd-Tiroler Freiheit, it systematically captures the content and nature of regionalist parties’ EU positioning from EU-related interventions in regional parliaments over a recent five-year period (2016–21). The paper finds that regionalist parties simultaneously adopt a distinct position on multiple EU-related issues (with varying salience and clarity). Importantly, each party constructs its EU attitudes around diametrically different issues, closely intertwined with its regional empowerment strategy and reflecting the unique regional context. Moreover, each party displays contradictory tendencies in its EU support, adopting Europhile positions on some issues, while Eurosceptic on others. This contribution is significant in two ways. First, the thematic variability identified within and across the cases provides an original insight into the full scope and scale of regionalist parties’ engagement with the EU at a given moment. Second, this in-depth qualitative analysis based on novel data advances past methodologies while challenging their conclusiveness about the regionalist parties’ actual EU support.

The author gratefully acknowledges the support of both parties and of all the partners in the Citizen Power in Peterborough project The capacity for resistance is an essential component of the principles and practice of liberal democracy. Critical policy scholars agree that unwelcome interventions in local communities by the state meet resistance, but disagree on whether such efforts can be successful in any meaningful sense. This paper identifies an optimistic turn in the literature, and derives from this a workable definition of successful resistance, which it then applies to an original piece of research into the ‘Save The Green Backyard’ campaign in Peterborough in the UK. Theory driven, it takes two basic concepts from the new institutionalism, embeddedness and agency, and demonstrates how a conceptual framework developed from these can expose the underlying mechanisms driving the successful resistance observed in the case study. The final section of the paper considers how forms of embeddedness worked together to provide a context for successful resistance; the nature of the agency in the case study; and how popular and invited spaces impacted differentially on the community organization in terms of embeddedness and agency. It also draws out some implications for institutionalist theory and methodologies, and for community organizations seeking to protect themselves against unwelcome state interference.

Manufactured housing (MH) communities have emerged as a high-profile and lucrative asset class. Despite this, it is costly or impossible to get loans to buy homes in most mobile home parks. This paper explores this ostensible contradiction – that while MH parks are desirable and liquid assets, the individual homes that compose them are not. We explore the implications of this contradiction for housing justice as well as financial and environmental vulnerability. We argue that the marginality of MH in US housing markets is rooted in the privileging of real property above personal property. We describe the origins and impacts of this “real property supremacy” in two parts. In the first, we outline the macro-historical context of real property supremacy using a variety of sources, including interviews with federal officials and industry experts as well as document analysis. In the second, we connect this macro context to its micro consequences, drawing on interviews with MH residents, non-profit and social-service practitioners, and park managers and owners in Tucson, Arizona. We conclude that state-supported property hierarchies create conditions where constrained housing options, semi-formal financial practices, and unique tenure forms combine to (re)produce unique and intersecting forms of vulnerability in MH communities.
