This paper presents stress influence functions for uniformly distributed, time-harmonic rectangular loads within a three-dimensional, viscoelastic, isotropic full-space. The coupled differential equations relating displacements and stresses in the full-space are solved through double Fourier integral transforms in the wave number domain, in which they can be solved algebraically. The final stress fields are expressed in terms of double indefinite integrals arising from the Fourier transforms. The paper presents numerical schemes with which to integrate these functions accurately. The article presents numerical validation of the synthesized stress kernels and their behavior for high frequencies and large distances from the excitation source. The influence of damping ratio on the dynamic results is also investigated. This article is complementary to previous results of the authors in which the corresponding displacement solutions were derived. Stress influence functions, together with their displacement counterparts, are a fundamental part of many numerical methods of discretization such the boundary element method.

The paper is dedicated to the algebraic formulation of elastic frame equations. The obtained set of equations describe deformations of moderately thick frames made of both compressible and incompressible bars, grillages of rigid or pin-joined connections, and trusses. Plane as well as space structures are presented. The paper is an extension of the article of T. Lewiński written in 2001 related to thin bars. Algebraic equations with diagonal constitutive matrix are original and suitable for various engineering applications and for educational purposes.

In this paper, post-buckling and free nonlinear vibration of microbeams resting on nonlinear elastic foundation subjected to axial force are investigated. The equations of motion of microbeams are derived by using the modified couple stress theory. Using Galerkin’s method, the equation of motion of microbeams is reduced to the nonlinear ordinary differential equation. By using the equivalent linearization in which the averaging value is calculated in a new way called the weighted averaging value, approximate analytical expressions for the nonlinear frequency of microbeams with pinned–pinned and clamped–clamped end conditions are obtained in closed-forms. Comparisons with previous solutions are showed accuracy of the present solutions. Effects of the material length scale parameter and the axial compressive force on the frequency ratios of microbeams; and effect of the material length scale parameter on the buckling load ratios of microbeams are investigated in this paper.

This paper considers and reviews a number of known phenomenological models, used to describe hysteretic effects of various natures. Such models consider hysteresis system as a “black box” with experimentally known input and output, related via formal mathematical dependence to parameters obtained from the best fit to experimental data. In particular, we focus on the broadly used Bouc-Wen and similar phenomenological models. The current paper shows the conditions which the Bouc-Wen model must meet. An alternative mathematical model is suggested where the force and kinematic parameters are related by a first-order differential equation. In contrast to the Bouc-Wen model, the right hand side is a polynomial with two variables representing hysteresis trajectories in the process diagram. This approach ensures correct asymptotic approximation of the solution to the enclosing hysteresis cycle curves. The coefficients in the right side are also determined experimentally from the hysteresis cycle data during stable oscillations. The proposed approach allows us to describe hysteretic trajectory with an arbitrary starting point within the enclosed cycle using only one differential equation. The model is applied to the description of forced vibrations of a low-frequency pendulum damper.

This paper aims to investigate the stationary probability density functions of the Duffing oscillator with time delay subjected to combined harmonic and white noise excitation by the method of stochastic averaging and equivalent linearization. By the transformation based on the fundamental matrix of the degenerate Duffing system, the paper shows that the displacement and the velocity with time delay in the Duffing oscillator can be computed approximately in non-time delay terms. Hence, the stochastic system with time delay is transformed into the corresponding stochastic non-time delay equation in Ito sense. The approximate stationary probability density function of the original system can be found by combining the stochastic averaging method, the equivalent linearization method, and the technique of auxiliary function. The response of Duffing oscillator is investigated. The analytical results are verified by numerical simulation results.

The compound variable inverse problem which comprises boundary temperature distribution and surface convective heat conduction coefficient of two-dimensional steady heat transfer system with inner heat source is studied in this paper applying the conjugate gradient method. The introduction of complex variable to solve the gradient matrix of the objective function obtains more precise inversion results. This paper applies boundary element method to solve the temperature calculation of discrete points in forward problems. The factors of measuring error and the number of measuring points zero error which impact the measurement result are discussed and compared with L-MM method in inverse problems. Instance calculation and analysis prove that the method applied in this paper still has good effectiveness and accuracy even if measurement error exists and the boundary measurement points’ number is reduced. The comparison indicates that the influence of error on the inversion solution can be minimized effectively using this method.

In manifold learning, the aim of alignment is to derive the global coordinate of manifold from the local coordinates of manifold’s patches. At present, most of manifold learning algorithms assume that the relation between the global and local coordinates is locally linear and based on this linear relation align the local coordinates of manifold’s patches into the global coordinate of manifold. There are two contributions in this paper. First, the nonlinear relation between the manifold’s global and local coordinates is deduced by making use of the differentiation of local pullback functions defined on the differential manifold. Second, the method of local linear iterative alignment is used to align the manifold’s local coordinates into the manifold’s global coordinate. The experimental results presented in this paper show that the errors of noniterative alignment are considerably large and can be reduced to almost zero within the first two iterations. The large errors of noniterative/linear alignment verify the nonlinear nature of alignment and justify the necessity of iterative alignment.

Thresholding function is an important part of the wavelet threshold denoising method, which can influence the signal denoising effect significantly. However, some defects are present in the existing methods, such as function discontinuity, fixed bias, and parameters determined by trial and error. In order to solve these problems, a new wavelet thresholding function based on hyperbolic tangent function is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the basic properties of hyperbolic tangent function are analyzed. Then, a new thresholding function with a shape parameter is presented based on hyperbolic tangent function. The continuity, monotonicity, and high-order differentiability of the new function are theoretically proven. Finally, in order to determine the final form of the new function, a shape parameter optimization strategy based on artificial fish swarm algorithm is given in this paper. Mean square error is adopted to construct the objective function, and the optimal shape parameter is achieved by iterative search. At the end of the paper, a simulation experiment is provided to verify the effectiveness of the new function. In the experiment, two benchmark signals are used as test signals. Simulation results show that the proposed function can achieve better denoising effect than the classical hard and soft thresholding functions under different signal types and noise intensities.

Combining the correction technique proposed by Lin and Xie and the shifted inverse iteration, a multilevel correction scheme for the Steklov eigenvalue problem is proposed in this paper. The theoretical analysis and numerical experiments indicate that the scheme proposed in this paper is efficient for both simple and multiple eigenvalues of the Steklov eigenvalue problem.

The one-dimensional continuous genetic algorithm (CGA) previously developed by the principal author is extended and enhanced to deal with two-dimensional spaces in this paper. The enhanced CGA converts the partial differential equations into algebraic equations by replacing the derivatives appearing in the differential equation with their proper finite difference formula in 2D spaces. This optimization methodology is then applied for the solution of steady-state two-dimensional Stokes and nonlinear Navier Stokes problems. The main advantage of using CGA for the solution of partial differential equations is that the algorithm can be applied to linear and nonlinear equations without any modification in its structure. A comparison between the results obtained using the 2D CGA and the known Galerkin finite element method using COMSOL is presented in this paper. The results showed that CGA has an excellent accuracy as compared to other numerical solvers.

This paper discusses spectral method with the tensor-product nodal basis at the Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto points for solving the Steklov eigenvalue problem. A priori error estimates of spectral method are discussed, and based on the work of Melenk and Wohlmuth (2001), a posterior error estimator of the residual type is given and analyzed. In addition, this paper combines the shifted-inverse iterative method and spectral method to establish an efficient scheme. Finally, numerical experiments with MATLAB program are reported.

In order to increase productivity, it is important to study the performance of a hydraulically fractured well producing at constant wellbore pressure. This paper constructs a new productivity formula, which is obtained by solving a weakly singular integral equation of the first kind, for an infinite-conductivity hydraulically fractured well producing at constant pressure. And the two key components of this paper are a weakly singular integral equation of the first kind and a steady-state productivity formula. A new midrectangle algorithm and a Galerkin method are presented in order to solve the weakly singular integral equation. The numerical results of these two methods are in accordance with each other. And then the solutions of the weakly singular integral equation are utilized for the productivity formula of hydraulic fractured wells producing at constant pressure, which provide fast analytical tools to evaluate production performance of infinite-conductivity fractured wells. The paper also shows equipotential threads, which are generated from the numerical results, with different fluid potential values. These threads can be approximately taken as a family of ellipses whose focuses are the two endpoints of the fracture, which is in accordance with the regular assumption in Kuchuk and Brigham, 1979.

A shear flow motivated by relatively moving half-planes is theoretically studied in this paper. Either the mass influx or the mass efflux is allowed on the boundary. This flow is called the extended Stokes' problems. Traditionally, exact solutions to the Stokes' problems can be readily obtained by directly applying the integral transforms to the momentum equation and the associated boundary and initial conditions. However, it fails to solve the extended Stokes' problems by using the integral-transform method only. The reason for this difficulty is that the inverse transform cannot be reduced to a simpler form. To this end, several crucial mathematical techniques have to be involved together with the integral transforms to acquire the exact solutions. Moreover, new dimensionless parameters are defined to describe the flow phenomena more clearly. On the basis of the exact solutions derived in this paper, it is found that the mass influx on the boundary hastens the development of the flow, and the mass efflux retards the energy transferred from the plate to the far-field fluid.

This paper presents a positional FEM formulation to deal with geometrical nonlinear dynamics of shells. The main objective is to develop a new FEM methodology based on the minimum potential energy theorem written regarding nodal positions and generalized unconstrained vectors not displacements and rotations. These characteristics are the novelty of the present work and avoid the use of large rotation approximations. A nondimensional auxiliary coordinate system is created, and the change of configuration function is written following two independent mappings from which the strain energy function is derived. This methodology is called positional and, as far as the authors' knowledge goes, is a new procedure to approximated geometrical nonlinear structures. In this paper a proof for the linear and angular momentum conservation property of the Newmark algorithm is provided for total Lagrangian description. The proposed shell element is locking free for elastic stress-strain relations due to the presence of linear strain variation along the shell thickness. The curved, high-order element together with an implicit procedure to solve nonlinear equations guarantees precision in calculations. The momentum conserving, the locking free behavior, and the frame invariance of the adopted mapping are numerically confirmed by examples.

The asymptotic behavior as λ → ∞ of the function U ( x , λ ) that satisfies the reduced wave equation L λ [ U ] = ∇ ⋅ ( E ( x ) ∇ U ) + λ 2 N 2 ( x ) U = 0 on an infinite 3-dimensional region, a Dirichlet condition on ∂ V , and an outgoing radiation condition is investigated. A function U N ( x , λ ) is constructed that is a global approximate solution as λ → ∞ of the problem satisfied by U ( x , λ ) . An estimate for W N ( x , λ ) = U ( x , λ ) − U N ( x , λ ) on V is obtained, which implies that U N ( x , λ ) is a uniform asymptotic approximation of U ( x , λ ) as λ → ∞ , with an error that tends to zero as rapidly as λ − N ( N = 1 , 2 , 3 , ... ) . This is done by applying a priori estimates of the function W N ( x , λ ) in terms of its boundary values, and the L 2 norm of r L λ [ W N ( x , λ ) ] on V . The approximate solution (potential) derived in this paper is defined on and in a neighborhood of any such caustic, and can be used to connect local “geometrical optics” type approximate solutions that hold on caustic free subsets of V .The result of this paper generalizes previous work of Bloom and Kazarinoff [C. O. BLOOM and N. D. KAZARINOFF, Short Wave Radiation Problems in Inhomogeneous Media: Asymptotic Solutions, SPRINGER VERLAG, NEW YORK, NY, 1976].

In this paper a model for Nonuniform Transmission Lines for electromagnetic transient analysis that incorporates frequency dependency of electrical parameters, variation of line electrical parameters with respect to distance, and distributed excitations due to incident electromagnetic fields is presented. The model is developed using the Method of Characteristics in the actual physical domain instead of the Modal Domain; this simplifies the mathematical development and the final equations. Moreover, the equations of the resultant model are valid either for two-conductor lines or for multiconductor lines without any change; this can be an advantage when the computer programming language considers a scalar as a 1x1 matrix. The proposed numerical model is developed under the hypothesis that the dielectric surrounding the conductors is homogenous. It is shown that in this case the characteristic curves of a Nonuniform Transmission Line become straight lines. Finally, the model is validated by comparison with results obtained using the Numerical Laplace Transform method.

In this paper, the authors study the bifurcation problems of the composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate structure with three bifurcation parameters by singularity theory in the case of 1:2 internal resonance. The sign function is employed to the universal unfolding of bifurcation equations in this system. The proposed approach can ensure the nondegenerate conditions of the universal unfolding of bifurcation equations in this system to be satisfied. The study presents that the proposed system with three bifurcation parameters is a high codimensional bifurcation problem with codimension 4, and 6 forms of universal unfolding are given. Numerical results show that the whole parametric plane can be divided into several persistent regions by the transition set, and the bifurcation diagrams in different persistent regions are obtained.

The roughness and uncertainty are important parameters of surface morphology. The least square middle line method is often used to estimate the roughness and its uncertainty. However, the roughness and its uncertainty obtained by the least square middle line method are inaccurate. This paper proposes a method to calculate exactly the roughness and its uncertainty by piecewise fitting the smooth B-spline filter assessment middle lines. A B-spline smoothing filter is selected to determine the assessment middle line of roughness. The B-spline filter can not only give the accurate roughness, but also obtain the smooth assessment middle line. The model of roughness uncertainty is proposed by piecewise fitting B-spline filter middle lines as the quadratic curves. The S-shaped test part is used to verify the model of roughness uncertainty.

The formulation of a family of advanced one-dimensional finite elements for the geometrically nonlinear static analysis of beam-like structures is presented in this paper. The kinematic field is axiomatically assumed along the thickness direction via a Unified Formulation (UF). The approximation order of the displacement field along the thickness is a free parameter that leads to several higher-order beam elements accounting for shear deformation and local cross-sectional warping. The number of nodes per element is also a free parameter. The tangent stiffness matrix of the elements is obtained via the Principle of Virtual Displacements. A total Lagrangian approach is used and Newton-Raphson method is employed in order to solve the nonlinear governing equations. Locking phenomena are tackled by means of a Mixed Interpolation of Tensorial Components (MITC), which can also significantly enhance the convergence performance of the proposed elements. Numerical investigations for large displacements, large rotations, and small strains analysis of beam-like structures for different boundary conditions and slenderness ratios are carried out, showing that UF-based higher-order beam theories can lead to a more efficient prediction of the displacement and stress fields, when compared to two-dimensional finite element solutions.

This paper presents a parametric level set-based method (PLSM) for multimaterial topology optimization of heat conduction structures with volume constraints. A parametric level set-based optimization model of heat conduction structures is built with multimaterial level set (MM-LS) model, which describes the boundaries of different materials by the combination of all level set functions. The heat dissipation efficiency which means the quadratic temperature gradient is conducted as the objective function. The adjoint method is utilized to calculate the sensitivities of the objective function with respect to expansion coefficients of the compactly supported radial basis functions (CSRBFs). The optimal configuration is achieved by updating the expansion coefficients gradually with the method of moving asymptotes (MMA). Several numerical examples are discussed to demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed method for multimaterial topology optimization of heat conduction structures.

The two-component μ-Hunter-Saxton system is considered in the spatially periodic setting. Firstly, a wave-breaking criterion is derived by employing the localization analysis of the transport equation theory. Secondly, several sufficient conditions of the blow-up solutions are established by using the classic method. The results obtained in this paper are new and different from those in previous works.

This paper is concerned with the vibration-driven system which can move due to the periodic motion of the internal mass and the dry friction; the system can be modeled as Filippov system and has the property of stick-slip motion. Different periodic solutions of stick-slip motion can be analyzed through sliding bifurcation, two-parameter numerical continuation for sliding bifurcation is carried out to get the different bifurcation curves, and the bifurcation curves divide the parameters plane into different regions which stand for different stick-slip motion of the periodic solution. Furthermore, continuations with additional condition v=0 are carried out for the directional control of the vibration-driven system in one period; the curves divide the parameter plane into different progressions.

Stochastic response of a plate on the generalized foundation driven by random excitation is solved in this paper. Governing differential equation is obtained by employing the Galerkin method. The generalized harmonic function technique is applied to the governing equation of motion. Using the stochastic averaging method (SAM), the system is approximated by the time homogeneous diffusive Markov process. Corresponding approximate stationary probability function is achieved by solving associated Fokker-Plank-Kolmogorov (FPK). An analytical solution is presented for the stationary probability of the amplitude and velocity. Validity of the stationary probability is verified by Monte-Carlo simulation. Parametric study is carried out to investigate effects of foundation parameters and excitation intensity on the stationary probability function. It is found that the fractional properties act similar to the foundation stiffness and damping and can be employed as a new control parameter for the support design.

In this paper, the analytical solution is presented for axially functionally graded (AFG) angle-ply flat panels subjected to arbitrary boundary condition. Material properties of AFG panels are assumed to vary linearly along x-direction. Reissner-type variation principle is used to derive the governing equations in mixed form. By employing extended Kantorovich method (EKM), a set of nonhomogeneous ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are obtained along the in-plane (x) and thickness (z) direction. The system of ODEs along the z-direction has constant coefficients, solved analytically. However, the system of ODEs along x-direction has variable coefficients, solved using modified power series method. The influence of property variation on the deflection and stresses is studied and discussed comprehensively for different sets of boundary conditions. Numerical results are validated through comparison with 3D FE. The presented analytical solution can serve as a benchmark for assessing the accuracy of the two-dimensional solution or 3D numerical solutions.

This paper presents fully discrete stabilized finite element methods for two-dimensional Bingham fluid flow based on the method of regularization. Motivated by the Brezzi-Pitkäranta stabilized finite element method, the equal-order piecewise linear finite element approximation is used for both the velocity and the pressure. Based on Euler semi-implicit scheme, a fully discrete scheme is introduced. It is shown that the proposed fully discrete stabilized finite element scheme results in the h1/2 error order for the velocity in the discrete norms corresponding to L2(0,T;H1(Ω)2)∩L∞(0,T;L2(Ω)2).

This paper adopted the strip element method to research the displacement response of functionally graded material structure with variable gradient parameters under mechanical loading. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equation of the system, strip element method theory was established through the principle of virtual work to get the control equations of functionally graded materials plane problem, using the modal superposition method to complete the solution of the equation and obtain the displacement distribution of the FGM plates with variable gradient parameters. The accuracy of the calculation method was verified by comparison with the result of finite element method. The results show that the displacement response of the strip element method is consistent with the finite element method. With the increase of the gradient coefficient, the ceramic content is increased and the material stiffness is also increased; then the displacement response caused by external loading is decreased. With the increase of the gradient coefficient, the influence of the gradient coefficient on the displacement response is decreased gradually.

In this paper, we study the dynamics of an abstract evolution equation with fading memory with a critical growing nonlinearity. By use of some new methods and asymptotic estimate techniques, we first verify the asymptotic compact of solution semigroup and then prove the existence of global attractors in weak topological space and strong topological space, while the forcing term only belongs to H-1(Ω) or L2(Ω), respectively. The results are new and appear to be optimal.

The continuous model is introduced, and the nonlinear partial differential equations of taut-slack mooring line system are transferred to nonlinear algebraic equations through tanh method, and four solitary solutions are obtained further. At the same time, to express the results clearly, the curve surfaces of strains, displacements, and tension are plotted. The results show that there are four different solutions in the system. With the pretension increasing, the tension changes from one solitary solution to snap tension, and when the pretension is increased further, the curve converts to continuous line, until straight line, which is corresponding to the taut mooring line. In the process of increasing of pretension, the mooring line transfers from slack to taut, accompanied with tension skipping, which is reduced by the system parameters, and different combination of parameters may introduce different tension in line, and the uncertainty may cause the breakage of mooring system. The results have an agreement with experiment, which shows that the calculating method in this paper may be believable and feasible. This work may provide reference for design of mooring system.

In this paper, we deal with the existence and uniqueness of the solutions of two-point boundary value problem of fourth-order ordinary differential equation: u4(t)=f(t,u(t),u′(t)), t∈[0,1], u(0)=u′(0)=u′′(1)=u′′′(1)=0, where f:[0,1]×R2→R is a continuous function. The problem describes the static deformation of an elastic beam whose left end-point is fixed and right is freed, which is called slanted cantilever beam. Under some weaker assumptions, we establish a new maximum principle by the perturbation of positive operator and construct the monotone iterative sequence of the lower and upper solutions, and, based on this, we obtain the existence and uniqueness results for the slanted cantilever beam.

In this paper, we study a class of second-order neutral impulsive functional differential equations. Under certain conditions, we establish the existence of multiple periodic solutions by means of critical point theory and variational methods. We propose an example to illustrate the applicability of our result.

In this paper, the correlation degree between driver’s reaction time and the physiological signal is analyzed. For this purpose, a large number of road experiments are performed using the biopac and the reaction time test systems to collect data. First, the electroencephalograph (EEG) signal is processed by using the fast Fourier and the inverse Fourier transforms. Then, the power spectrum densities (PSD) ofα,β,δ, and EEG wave are calculated by Welch procedure. The average power of the power spectrum ofα,β, andθis calculated by the biopac software and two ratio formulas,(α+θ)/βandα/β, are selected to be the impact factors. After that the heart rate and the standard deviation of RR interval are calculated from the electrocardiograph (ECG) signal. Lastly, the correlation degree between the eight impact factors and the reaction time are analyzed based on the grey correlation analysis. The results demonstrate thatα/βhas the greatest correlation to the reaction time except EEG-PSD. Furthermore, two mathematical models for the reaction time-driving time and theα/β-driving time are developed based on the Gaussian function. These mathematical models are then finally used to establish the functional relation ofα/β-the reaction time.

In this paper, we develop a new method to reduce the error in the splitting finite-difference method of Maxwell’s equations. By this method two modified splitting FDTD methods (MS-FDTDI, MS-FDTDII) for the two-dimensional Maxwell equations are proposed. It is shown that the two methods are second-order accurate in time and space and unconditionally stable by Fourier methods. By energy method, it is proved that MS-FDTDI is second-order convergent. By deriving the numerical dispersion (ND) relations, we prove rigorously that MS-FDTDI has less ND errors than the ADI-FDTD method and the ND errors of ADI-FDTD are less than those of MS-FDTDII. Numerical experiments for computing ND errors and simulating a wave guide problem and a scattering problem are carried out and the efficiency of the MS-FDTDI and MS-FDTDII methods is confirmed.

The source termsf1(u)andf2(θ)and nonlinear external dampingg(ut)are essentially|u|ρu,|θ|ϱθ, and|ut|rutrespectively.

In this paper, we present a method to improve the accuracy of the charge simulation method for numerical conformal mapping. The method constructs the constraint equation by using the charge simulation method. The charges and the conformal radius are computed by using the Runge-Kutta method based on the dynamic system of the constraint equation. By using this method, we can obtain new approximated conformal mapping function and improve the accuracy of numerical conformal mapping compared to the charge simulation method for numerical conformal mapping proposed by Amano. Furthermore, the corresponding numerical results are shown to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

The present studies on the extension of B-spline mainly focus on Bezier methods and uniform B-spline and are confined to the adjustment role of shape parameters to curves. Researchers pay little attention to nonuniform B-spline. This paper discusses deeply the extension of the quasi-uniform B-spline curves. Firstly, by introducing shape parameters in the basis function, the spline curves are defined in matrix form. Secondly, the application of the shape parameter in shape design is analyzed deeply. With shape parameters, we get another means for adjusting the curves. Meanwhile, some examples are given. Thirdly, we discuss the smooth connection between adjacent B-spline segments in detail and present the adjusting methods. Without moving the control points position, through assigning appropriate value to the shape parameter, C1 continuity of combined spline curves can be realized easily. Results show that the methods are simple and suitable for the engineering application.

We study singular integral equations of convolution type with cosecant kernels and periodic coefficients in class L2[-π,π]. Such equations are transformed into a discrete jump problem or a discrete system of linear algebraic equations by using discrete Fourier transform. The conditions of Noethericity and the explicit solutions are obtained by means of the theory of classical boundary value problem and of the Fourier analysis theory. This paper will be of great significance for the study of improving and developing complex analysis, integral equations, and boundary value problems.

In dynamic systems, some nonlinearities generate special connection problems of non-Z2symmetric homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. Such orbits are important for analyzing problems of global bifurcation and chaos. In this paper, a general analytical method, based on the undetermined Padé approximation method, is proposed to construct non-Z2symmetric homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits which are affected by nonlinearity factors. Geometric and symmetrical characteristics of non-Z2heteroclinic orbits are analyzed in detail. An undetermined frequency coefficient and a corresponding new analytic expression are introduced to improve the accuracy of the orbit trajectory. The proposed method shows high precision results for the Nagumo system (one single orbit); general types of non-Z2symmetric nonlinear quintic systems (orbit with one cusp); and Z2symmetric system with high-order nonlinear terms (orbit with two cusps). Finally, numerical simulations are used to verify the techniques and demonstrate the enhanced efficiency and precision of the proposed method.

Diffuse optical tomography problems rely on the solution of an optimization problem for which the dimension of the parameter space is usually large. Thus, gradient-type optimizers are likely to be used, such as the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) algorithm, along with the adjoint-state method to compute the cost function gradient. Usually, theL2-inner product is chosen within the extraction procedure (i.e., in the definition of the relationship between the cost function gradient and the directional derivative of the cost function) while alternative inner products that act as regularization can be used. This paper presents some results based on space-dependent Sobolev inner products and shows that this method acts as an efficient low-pass filter on the cost function gradient. Numerical results indicate that the use of Sobolev gradients can be particularly attractive in the context of inverse problems, particularly because of the simplicity of this regularization, since a single additional diffusion equation is to be solved, and also because the quality of the solution is smoothly varying with respect to the regularization parameter.

Due to large numbers of antennas and users, matrix inversion is complicated in linear precoding techniques for massive MIMO systems. Several approximated matrix inversion methods, including the Neumann series, have been proposed to reduce the complexity. However, the Neumann series does not converge fast enough. In this paper, to speed up convergence, a new joint Newton iteration and Neumann series method is proposed, with the first iteration result of Newton iteration method being employed to reconstruct the Neumann series. Then, a high probability convergence condition is established, which can offer useful guidelines for practical massive MIMO systems. Finally, simulation examples are given to demonstrate that the new joint Newton iteration and Neumann series method has a faster convergence rate compared to the previous Neumann series, with almost no increase in complexity when the iteration number is greater than or equal to 2.

The well-known Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula is a powerful device for calculating the inverse of a square matrix. The paper finds that the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula can be extended to the linear integrodifferential equation, which results in an unified scheme to decompose the linear integrodifferential equation into sets of differential equations and one integral equation. Two examples are presented to illustrate the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula for the linear integrodifferential equation.

In this paper we develop a Laplace transform method and a finite difference method for solving American option pricing problem when the change of the option price with time is considered as a fractal transmission system. In this scenario, the option price is governed by a time-fractional partial differential equation (PDE) with free boundary. The Laplace transform method is applied to the time-fractional PDE. It then leads to a nonlinear equation for the free boundary (i.e., optimal early exercise boundary) function in Laplace space. After numerically finding the solution of the nonlinear equation, the Laplace inversion is used to transform the approximate early exercise boundary into the time space. Finally the approximate price of the American option is obtained. A boundary-searching finite difference method is also proposed to solve the free-boundary time-fractional PDEs for pricing the American options. Numerical examples are carried out to compare the Laplace approach with the finite difference method and it is confirmed that the former approach is much faster than the latter one.

Oxygen diffusion into the cells with simultaneous absorption is an important problem and it is of great importance in medical applications. The problem is mathematically formulated in two different stages. At the first stage, the stable case having no oxygen transition in the isolated cell is investigated, whereas at the second stage the moving boundary problem of oxygen absorbed by the tissues in the cell is investigated. In oxygen diffusion problem, a moving boundary is essential feature of the problem. This paper extends a homotopy perturbation method with time-fractional derivatives to obtain solution for oxygen diffusion problem. The method used in dealing with the solution is considered as a power series expansion that rapidly converges to the nonlinear problem. The new approximate analytical process is based on two-iterative levels. The modified method allows approximate solutions in the form of convergent series with simply computable components.

This paper is aimed at constructing fractional power series (FPS) solutions of time-space fractional Boussinesq equations using residual power series method (RPSM). Firstly we generalize the idea of RPSM to solve any-order time-space fractional differential equations in high-dimensional space with initial value problems inRn. Using RPSM, we can obtain FPS solutions of fourth-, sixth-, and 2nth-order time-space fractional Boussinesq equations inRand fourth-order time-space fractional Boussinesq equations inR2andRn. Finally, by numerical experiments, it is shown that RPSM is a simple, effective, and powerful method for seeking approximate analytic solutions of fractional differential equations.

Combining the finite covering technical and complex variable moving least square, the complex variable meshless manifold method can handle the discontinuous problem effectively. In this paper, the complex variable meshless method is applied to solve the problem of elastic dynamics, the complex variable meshless manifold method for dynamics is established, and the corresponding formula is derived. The numerical example shows that the numerical solutions are in good agreement with the analytical solution. The CVMMM for elastic dynamics and the discrete forms are correct and feasible. Compared with the traditional meshless manifold method, the CVMMM has higher accuracy in the same distribution of nodes.

Reproducing kernel Hilbert space method (RKHSM) is an effective method. This paper, for the first time, uses the traditional RKHSM for solving the temperature field in two phase flows of multilayer water injection well. According to 2D oil-water temperature field mathematical model of two phase flows in cylindrical coordinates, selecting the properly initial and boundary conditions, by the process of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization, the analytical solution was given by reproducing kernel functions in a series expansion form, and the approximate solution was expressed byn-term summation. The satisfied numerical results were carried out by Mathematica 7.0, showing that the larger the difference between injected water temperature and initial borehole temperature or water injection conditions, the more obvious the indication of water accepting zones. The numerical examples evidence the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method of the two phase flows in engineering.

This paper is concerned with the regularity criterion of weak solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear damping in critical weakLqspaces. It is proved that if the weak solution satisfies∫0T∇u1Lq,∞2q/2q-3+∇u2Lq,∞2q/2q-3/1+ln⁡e+∇uL22ds<∞, q>3/2, then the weak solution of Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear damping is regular on(0,T].

This paper deals with the hierarchical laminated shell elements with nonsensitivity to adverse conditions for linear static analysis of cylindrical problems. Displacement approximation of the elements is established by high-order shape functions using the integrals of Legendre polynomials to ensureC0continuity at the interface between adjacent elements. For exact linear mapping of cylindrical shell problems, cylindrical coordinate is adopted. To find global response of laminated composite shells, equivalent single-layer theory is also considered. Thus, the proposed elements are formulated by the dimensional reduction from three-dimensional solid to two-dimensional plane which allows the first-order shear deformation and considers anisotropy due to fiber orientation. The sensitivity tests are implemented to show robustness of the present elements with respect to severe element distortions, very high aspect ratios of elements, and very large radius-to-thickness ratios of shells. In addition, this element has investigated whether material conditions such as isotropic and orthotropic properties may affect the accuracy as the element distortion ratio is increased. The robustness of present element has been compared with that of several shell elements available in ANSYS program.

Productivity rate (Q) or production rate is one of the important indicator criteria for industrial engineer to improve the system and finish good output in production or assembly line. Mathematical and statistical analysis method is required to be applied for productivity rate in industry visual overviews of the failure factors and further improvement within the production line especially for automated flow line since it is complicated. Mathematical model of productivity rate in linear arrangement serial structure automated flow line with different failure rate and bottleneck machining time parameters becomes the basic model for this productivity analysis. This paper presents the engineering mathematical analysis method which is applied in an automotive company which possesses automated flow assembly line in final assembly line to produce motorcycle in Malaysia. DCAS engineering and mathematical analysis method that consists of four stages known as data collection, calculation and comparison, analysis, and sustainable improvement is used to analyze productivity in automated flow assembly line based on particular mathematical model. Variety of failure rate that causes loss of productivity and bottleneck machining time is shown specifically in mathematic figure and presents the sustainable solution for productivity improvement for this final assembly automated flow line.

This paper discusses the inverse problem of determining an unknown source in a second order differential equation from measured final data. This problem is ill-posed; that is, the solution (if it exists) does not depend continuously on the data. In order to solve the considered problem, an iterative method is proposed. Using this method a regularized solution is constructed and an a priori error estimate between the exact solution and its regularized approximation is obtained. Moreover, numerical results are presented to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of this method.
